Born July 9, 1909, in Beech Flats, Canton RD 1, he was the son of Martin and Sarah Olinger Bassett. Mr. Bassett and his brothers and sisters were rais their stepmother, Mrs. Daisy White Bassett. Mr. Bassett was employed for 43 years as a milk tester for the Canton Creamery, from which he retired in 1974. He is survived by his wife of 55 years Irene Storrs Bassett; two daughters and sons-in-law, Elaine and Scott Shedden, Canton RD1 and Myrna and Myl Anderson, Walla Walla, WA; grandchildren, Bryan and Michelle Shedden, Mark and Tammy Shedden and Miss Meagan Anderson; three great-grandchildren, Joshua, Sarah and Lance Shedden; one brother, Wendell E. Bassett, Canton; one sister, Mrs. Alice Storrs, Canton; and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a sister, Gertrude Best, and a brother Niles E. Bassett. Funeral services will be held on Friday Jan 6, 1989 at 11 a.m. at the Morse and Kleese Funeral Home, Canton, with the Rev. David Morris officiating. Interment will be in the East Canton Cemetery. | 1046 | 352 Today, 4 April 2025 Willam Andrew Bass William Andrew (Bill) Bass, 95, of Ocala, Florida peacefully passed away on April 2nd at home. Bill was born in Willimantic, Connecticut to Eben and Helen Bass on December 26th, 1929 during a troubled time in the US at the outset of The Great Depression. He was the fourth out of eight children. He graduated from Windham High School. The family farm, Bass Brothers, was the first all-electric dairy farm in Connecticut. This farm was his life's work. He gratefully retired to a life of leisure in sunny Florida in a wonderful town with fields, farms, and horses. Predeceased in death by his beloved wife of forty-nine years, Susan (Spencer) of East Greenwich, Rhode Island as well as all seven of his brothers and sisters: Eben, Steven, Harold, Claire, Anne, David, and John. He is survived by his two daughters, Diana Bass and Tamara Bass of Ocala, Florida, Joan (Spencer) Anthes of East Greenwich, Rhode Island, as well as many nieces and nephews, all of whom he loved dearly. Bill spent his life working hard, expressing joy & gratitude for all the positive things in his life. His laughter could be heard throughout his neighborhood. He will be missed by all who knew him. | 1049 | A Sudden Death Mrs. Julia Scott, a respected colored lady, died suddently at her home here Monday evening at 7:55 o?clock. Apoplexy is given as the cause of her death. Funeral services were conducted by Rev. J.W. Krisel from the A.M.E. church, yesterday afternoon at 2:00 o?clock. Interment was in Fairview cemetery. Deceased was born in Perry county, Alabama, October 5, 1941, and was 73 years, 6 months and 22 days old at the time of her death. Her maiden name was Julia Rebecca Bass. She was married to Rev. John Scott on May 25, 1857, and to the union sixteen children were born ? six sons and ten daughters. The husband and five of the children are deceased. The surviving children are: Mrs. Mary Smiley, Topeka, Kansas; Mrs. Blanche Tyler, Hutchinson, Kansas; Mrs. Jane Caleb, Trenton, La.; Thomas Scott, Portland, Oregon; Geo. Scott, El Reno, Oklahoma; Mrs. Annie Martin, Mrs. Leona Bowen, Lela Elsie and James Scott, all of St. John. Deceased became a member of the A.M.E. church at Trenton, LA. The family came to Stafford county, Kansas in the yaer 1886 and took a homestead in Ohio township. Mrs. Scott, after the death of her husband, moved to St. John, where she resided until her death. She deserves credit for keeping her family together and doing everything possible to give them an education. Her two youngest daughters are graduates of the St. John high school and one of them is now a student in the Kansas State Normal at Emporia. Both deceased and her husband were born in slavery. They were married while slaves and three of their children were born in slavery. Mrs. Scott was owned by a widow lady and was never sold. She was given her freedom under President Lincoln?s Emancipation Proclamation, as was her husband and children. | 1050 | A Topical History of Cedar County, Iowa, Volume 2 (1910) Gilman A. Bass Gilman A. Bass, who died in Inland township on the 10th of Marcy, 1904, was long successfully engaged in the real-estate and loan business here bu spent the last seven years of his life in honorable retirement. His brith occurred in Orange county, Vermont, on the 9th of August, 1826, his parents being Alpheus and Sarah (Copeland) Bass, who were farming people of that county. He supplemented his preliminary education by a course of study in the Middlebury Seminary of Vermont and subsequently followed the profession of school teaching in the Grean Mountain state. In 1857 he removed to Big Rock, Iowa, where he also taught school, and in the spring of 1858 went to Davenport, there devoting his attention to the study of law. He next came to Tipton and there made his home for nearly frive years with the exception of eight months spent as a soldier in the Union army. He enlisted for service in October, 1864, and was honorably discharged in June, 1865, having accompanied Sherman on his march to the sea. In 1866 he took up his above in Inland township, where he embarked in the real-estate and loan business, carrying on an extensive and successful enterprise of that character until the time of his retirement in 1897. The last few years of his life were spent in the home of his daughter, Abbie. On the 10th of September, 1861, Mr. Bass was joined in wedlock to Miss Martha Marsh, a daughter of Daniel and Aurelia (Gould) Marsh, who came to this county from Ohio in 1854. Their children were three in number, two of whom died in infancy. The surviving daughter is Abbie L. Mr. Bass was a republican in politics, ever being a stanch supported of the party which was the defense of the Union during the dark days of the Civil war. His business record was always such as won for him respenct and regard as well as success, and all who knew him entertained for him warm esteem, for his salient qualities were those of honorable, upright manhood. He was called to his final rest when in the seventy-eighth year of his age and in his passing Cedar county lost one of its widely known and resprenstative citizens. Miss Abbie L. Bass gave her hand in marriage to Marion M. Blazer, a son of George W. and Catherine (Scarlet) Blazer, who came to this county from Ohio in the ?60s. Marion M. Blazer obtained his early education in the district schools here and afetward pursued the fine arts course in the Valparaiso Normal School. He taught school during one winter term and then turned his attention to general agricultural pursuits, being engaged in farming for six years. On the expiration of that period he became identified with the real-estate and loan business, continuing in that field of activity until his demise, which occurred on the 2d of January, 1907. Unto him and his wife were born four children, namely; Edith M.; Silas G.; Inez M.; and Ira F., who died in infancy. Mr. Blazer gaive his political allegiance to the republican party, believing firmly in its principles. His widow still survives and makes her home in Bennett, where she has an extensive circle of warm friends. History of Cedar County, Iowa, 1878. Bass, G. A., farmer, Section 11; Post Office Inland; born August 9, 1826, in Orange County, Vermont; in 1832, parents went to Washington County, Vermont; came to this State in the Fall of 1857; taught school in Big Rock, Scott County, Iowa, the following Winter; went to Davenport in the Spring and remained one and half years; then came to Tipton and remained nearly five years, except about eight months. When he was in the army, was with Sherman in his march to the sea; came home June, 1865, and in 1866 came to this Township. Married Martha Marsh, September 10, 1861; she was born November 25, 1828, in New Hampshire; have one daughter living--Abbie L., born February 2, 1864; Francis G. and Martha A. being dead. Mrs. Bass' father and mother are living with them; they are nearly 80 years old. Mr. Bass has served as Justice of the Peace four years, and is acting as such now. | Bass, Gilman A. (I1103)
