| 1051 | Ad Express & Daily Iowegian, Centerville, Iowa, Wednesday, August 20, 2016 Alice Katherine Bassett Alice Katherine Bassett passed away Aug. 4, 2016 in Kirksville Manor Care in Kirksville, Missouri. Katherine was born Oct. 11, 1931 to Richard Roland Eby and Ella Beatrice (Wilson) Eby in Moulton, Iowa. She was united in marriage to Austin Wayne Bassett on Feb. 12, 1950. Katherine is survived by her husband Wayne; and two daughters, Pamela Brand (Dr. Ronald) of Kirksville, Missouri and Terri Bassett (Frank Hein) of Ventura, California. Also surviving are one sister, Suela Lotridge (Gary) of South Bend, Indiana; one nephew, the Rev. Todd Lotridge (Ann Marie) of South Bend, Indiana and one niece, Cynthia Johnston (Robert) of Lowell, Michigan. Katherine and her husband Wayne owned and ran the family newspaper The Moulton Tribune in Moulton, Iowa from1961 to 1977 as the third generation of her family to do so. She did it all - from linotype operator to columnist and editor. This operation gave rise to a photography business - Bassett Photo where she and Wayne specialized in wedding photography. She recently remarked that this was her favorite job. She loved being part of all those happy beginnings. While living in Moulton, Katherine was instrumental in building the Garrett Memorial Library serving on the board of trustees, including three years as chairman, during the library's construction and early years of operation. She was a member of Chapter F P.E.O, the Order of Eastern Star and the Moulton Methodist Church where she was often found playing the organ. In 1977 the Tribune was sold, but Katherine continued to work as editor and columnist for the new owners until 1985. During this time Bassett Photo thrived, however when Wayne sustained serious injuries in a plane crash, Katherine kept the business going on her own with a little help from her daughter, Pam. In 1985 Wayne and Katherine started a new adventure. After living briefly in Dayton, Ohio, the couple made their home in Warner-Robins, Georgia where they were both civilian employees of the U.S. Air Force at Robins Air Force Base until their retirement in 2006. Katherine was an accomplished seamstress, who took great delight in creating beautiful dresses for Barbie dolls which she then donated to charity at Christmas time. She loved books and was an avid Harry Potter fan. A friend in Georgia says, "Katherine was an overcomer." When life threw daunting challenges into her path, Katherine Bassett rose up to meet them. Her strength and love will be missed by her family and all those whose lives she touched. A small graveside service is planned for family and friends in Moulton, Iowa on Saturday, August 13, 2016. Don was born June 23, 1925 to Sam and Minnie (Bassett) Musser in Grant County. When he was three years old the family moved to a ranch between the forks of the Dismal River. They eventually bought a ranch south of the river where he continued to live and work until his passing. Don loved ranching, fishing, hunting arrowheads, his dogs, but most of all his family. He married Daisy Lee on February 15, 1952, and to this union eleven children were born. Don is survived by his wife Daisy of Tryon; children, Debbie, Cathy (Jerry) Moritz, Nick (Brenda), Randy (Kim), Shane (Barb), Kim (Gene) Simonton, Shari all of Tryon, Becki Medich, and Mitch Musser both of North Platte; 20 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; sisters, Doris Griffith of Tryon, and Georgia Trout of North Platte; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Sam and Minnie Musser; sons, Stacey and infant, Justin; sisters, Helen Morrow, and Elsie Fiorea; and a brother, Sam. | 1053 | Adams & Swanson Funeral Home Doris W. Griffith November 20, 1922 ? July 26, 2023 Doris W. Griffith, 100, of Tryon, passed away July 26, 2023 at Linden Court. She was born November 20, 1922 in a sod house south of Whitman to Sam and Minnie (Bassett) Musser. She was delivered by her father in a blizzard. Doris graduated from Mullen High School with the class of 1939 when she was 16 years old. She married Hank Hallsted on October 5, 1942 in Alliance. Hank enlisted in the service and she followed him to Oregon. Doris returned to the family ranch when Hank was sent overseas. After Hank returned, they worked on several ranches before returning to the home place. Hank passed in 1970 and Doris continued to ranch with her son Kevin for the next 8 years. Doris married William Griffith in 1979. They ranched together until 2010 when Bill passed. Doris continued to ranch on her home place until her health wouldn?t allow it anymore. Doris was very talented at playing the mandolin and could play by ear. She had a love for the sandhills. She enjoyed trout fishing and hunting for arrowheads. Doris was and excellent wife and mother, always waiting for her children after school with fresh baked food. She was an excellent cook and family remembers her big breakfasts. She had big gardens, raised chickens, and canned meat. Survivors include daughters, Patricia Ekberg of Araphoe, Linda (Leon) Penny of Tryon; grandchildren, John (Gina) Ekberg of Cambridge, Melissa (John) Murante of Omaha; great grandchildren, Natalia Murante, Hayden (Michele) Ekberg; great great grandchildren, Nyx, Abram, and Axel Ekberg; numerous other family members and friends. Nixa Chapel, 14 June 2022 Helen Imogene Ellingsworth Helen (Imogene) Stewart Ellingsworth of Spokane went home to be with her Lord and Savior on June 8, 2022, at the age of 95 years. Imogene was born on September 22, 1926, to Roy and Merle (Bass) Stewart. She graduated Spokane High School in 1945. After graduation, she went to San Francisco, California, where she worked delivering mail in the shipyard during WW2 on a motor scooter. On July 5, 1947, Imogene Stewart married Clifford Ellingswoth in the First Baptist Church of Spokane by Rev. Worth Caughron. To this union, three children were born. Imogene was a loving mother, grandmother, and great grandmother. Imogene worked part time for the Spokane Post Office. She then became postmaster, serving the Spokane community for 21 years until retirement. Imogene was vital in helping plan and put together the Post Office centennial in 1992. Imogene loved to garden. She was still actively gardening into her 90s. She loved kids and was involved in the local 4-H, where she was a community leader. She served in the First Baptist Church as a Sunday School teacher, VBS teacher and WMU. In 1972, she joined the Highlandville First Baptist Church and then, for the last 30 years, Imogene was a member of South Gate Baptist Church. Imogene was preceded by her parents, husband Clifford, son Ron Ellingsworth, brothers Don Stewart, Joe Bill Stewart, Homer Stewart, sisters Lola Madden, and Lorene Argie. Imogene is survived by her daughter Rhonda Carr and husband Dexter, son Monty Ellingsworth, four grandchildren Danny, Niki, and Amber Ellingsworth, Corey Carr and wife Bayli, six great grandchildren Brianna, Jaden, Cruse Ellingsworth, Wyatt, Stetson, and Kyzlee Carr, great great grandson Colton, as well as a host of extended family and beloved friends. With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of Ronald Bessette on Monday, May 19, 2025, at Albany Medical Center. He was born on Aug. 23, 1958, in Middlebury, Vt., to the late Dwight Sr. and Alice (O'Brien) Bessette. Ron grew up on the family farm on Route 22A in Panton, then worked on several other farms around Addison County before enlisting. He served his country as a welder in the United States Army, retiring with 20 years of service. Ron was a true craftsman, welding not just metals but also the bonds of friendship and respect among his comrades and friends. Outside of work, Ronald was an avid admirer of John Deere Tractors and trains, often engrossed in train movies. He was also a lover of the outdoors, relishing snowmobiling, Sunday country rides, and ice cream. Ron is survived by his two daughters, Kari Ashcroft and Kelly Bessette, as well as his brother Andrew Bessette. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his brothers, Dwight Jr. and Michael Bessette. Ron's life will be celebrated on Saturday, May 31, from 10 a.m. until noon at the Centenary United Methodist Church, located at 1 Gray Avenue, Greenwich, N.Y., 12834. Gloria was born on October 3, 1956, in Whitley County Hospital, Columbia City, Indiana, to Ronald and Mary Kathryn (Hathaway) Miller. She graduated from Columbia City Joint High School in 1975. Gloria married Michael Bassett on September 4, 1976. Gloria was a hairstylist in her younger years, and was currently employed by VOSS in Fort Wayne. She was devoted to her job and was a very hard working woman. Gloria was an avid reader and gardener. She loved being outdoors with her family, especially her dear grandchildren; A.J., Bentley, and Kingston Bassett. Gloria was a very talented landscape designer, artful home decorator (especially at Halloween and Christmas), and was a terrific baker! Gloria was one of the "good people," and will truly be missed! | 1063 | Age-Herald, Saturday, August 31, 1895 Murder or Suicide? An Atlanta Merchant Found Wounded Under Mysterious Circumstances Atlanta, Aug. 30 ? B.A. Bass, a Peters street commission merchant, was shot at 4:30 o?clock this morning in the rear of the Grand theater. There is some doubt whether it was suicide or murder, but the detectives working on the case think it was suicide. The body was found in a ditch in an alley, which runs back from the Aragon hotel. Bass left his home at 4:13 o?clock to go to his store. It is supposed that he started through the alley because it was a nearer route. The policemen, who were near, heard the pistol shot, but did not see any one run away. Bass told his son and some friends yesterday that his life had been threatened. He was to have been tried himself tomorrow for receiving stolen goods. There are two theories ? one that he shot himself to escape the trial, and another is that he was shot by some one implicated in the stealing. Bass died this afternoon. Bass Murder An Arrest and Sensational Developments at Atlanta, Ga. Special to The Republic Atlanta, Ga. Sept. 20 ? The sensational murder of Baker A. Bass, a prominent commission man, who was killed just three weeks ago, loomed up again in the arrest of H.T. Jenkins, a man well-known about town as a tobacco drummer. Jenkins is not charged directly with the crime, but the detectives claim that they have positive proof, in the shape of a confession, that he endeavored to hire witnesses to fix the crime upon Detective Green Conn. Jenkins, it seems, was a friend of Bass and was connected with him in business ventures. It is claimed that he owed Bass considerable money. A few days ago he came out in a sensational interview, alleging that the pistol found by Bass? side had been identified as belonging to Detective Conn. He corroborated his claim by the testimony of Mrs. Dampman, a woman with whom, it was alleged, both Bass and Conn were intimate. Yesterday detectives and newspaper men were concealed in a closet in the house of assignation where the woman and Jenkins met. She, it seems, had been scared by the charges of conspiracy which had been hinted by the detectives and had arranged the interview so that Jenkins could be induced to reveal his part in the conspiracy. He acknowledged that he had offered the woman $500 to identify the pistol as Conn?s. The theory goes further back and connects Jenkins with the original tragedy. Born in St. Johnsbury, Vermont, he was the son of the late Roger Leonard and Theresa LaRose Bessette. Bernie was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather, and found his greatest joy in his family, guiding them with patience, kindness, and quiet wisdom. His faith was the cornerstone of his life. As a long-time member of St. Mary Help of Christians Catholic Church, he taught religion, served as a Secular Franciscan minister for many years, and proudly upheld his role as a Fourth Degree Knight of Columbus. He especially treasured his family's connection to St. Andre; Bessette, whose statue stands outside Old St. Mary's Church in Aiken, SC. Bernie embodied what St. Andre; lived and modeled throughout his life and the statue stands as a reminder of the faith he lived each day. Curious and endlessly inquisitive, Bernie approached life with determination and optimism. Even after a Parkinson's disease diagnosis, he researched ways to improve his own life and help others. His problem-solving skills and creativity led him to earn a patent for a cutting tool inspired by his experiences with Parkinson's. Whether studying new ideas or tinkering in his workshop, Bernie's intellect touched everything he did. He met each day with a smile, steady faith, and quiet resilience that inspired everyone around him. Bernie's interests were as varied as they were heartfelt. He found delight in woodworking, singing and playing guitar, fishing, golfing, and embracing the outdoors. Family camping trips, full of fun and laughter, stood out as some of his happiest times. Through all these passions, his love of learning and exploring the world was ever present, shaping the life he shared with family and friends. His dedication to service as a Boy Scout leader and a United States Navy veteran reflected the same care and integrity he brought to every part of his life. To know Bernie was to know kindness, humor, and grace. He loved deeply, lived fully, and left a lasting legacy of faith, courage, and compassion. His intelligence and curiosity enriched every life he touched, and his presence was a gift that will continue to inspire his family for generations. He is survived by his loving wife of 54 years, Ann Marie Bessette; children, Andrea Clutts (Jasen), Karen Henderson (Jay), Joseph Bessette (Jessica), and Theresa Leonardi (John Joseph III); and his beloved grandchildren, Samuel, Greta, Sawyer, Shepherd, Julia, Jordan, and John Joseph IV. Also surviving are his brothers, Ronald Bessette (Sherry), Dennis Bessette (Bernadette), Jeffrey Bessette, and his sister, Carol Zuccaro (the late Edward). In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, Reginald Bessette. He was a devoted servant of God and was faithful to his words, "God is Love." Born in Watkins, Pa., he resided in Cuyahoga Falls for the past 43 years, moving there from Akron. He proudly served his country during the Korean Conflict in the U.S. Navy. He was a member of First Christian Church of Stow where he was a past Trustee and sang in the church choir. He worked for Mohawk Rubber Company for 32 years, was a part-time Barber, and retired from Kent State University. His hobbies included woodworking, camping, hunting, fishing, gardening, and music, and he proudly built our family home. He was born January 14, 1953 in Barberton, the son of the late Earl R. Critchfield and Marcella Bassett Snyder (Ronald). On May 10th, 1975, he married Debbie Critchfield. Together they shared 46 years of marriage. John had a heart of gold and would help anyone who needed it. He always was putting a smile on others' faces with his jokes or entertaining stories. John will forever be missed but never forgotten. He was preceded in death by his sister Anna and his brother Earl. He is survived by his best friend and love of his life wife Debbie Critchfield, their two children Sean (Nina) Critchfield of Houston, Texas and Kelli (William) Critchfield of Akron. John loved his kids and grandchildren more than anything. He found his true calling the day he became a grandfather, known as "Papa". He had a special bond with Madeline, Peyton, Kaia, Olivia Augustus, Hazel, and Lillian Critchfield. Bassett, 79, Linn county pioneer and oldest charter member of the Halsey Order of the Eastern Star died this morning at the home of her daughter Mrs. T.I. Marks, of Halsey. Mrs. Bassett was born in Green county, Missouri, in 1846.. When she was three years old she started across the plains with her parents, Rev. and Mrs. J.P. Holmes. Both her parents died en route, in 1849, but their orphaned daughter continued the trip in the care of a cousin, who settled near Scio. This cousin reared Mrs. Bassett, and she remained a resident of Linn county. She moved to Halsey 50 years ago. She had become a member of the Baptist church when she was 16 years old. Four daughters, 14 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren survive. Funeral services will be held at 2 o?clock Wednesday afternoon at the Halsey Methodist church. November 22, 2014 Marjorie Louise Purdue passed away quietly in her sleep at the age of 91 on the morning of November 22, 2014 due to complications from congestive heart failure following a year of seriously declining health. She came into the world on September 20, 1923. Her struggling family provided her with a loving but very strict environment, so following her Bosse High School graduation, she promptly married and had her first child by the tender age of 19. Within a short time she discovered that Mom was right; the marriage had been a mistake. She and husband, Bill Creekmur, divorced within a few years and shortly thereafter, Louise married the love of her life, Army Major Roland J. Bessette. They traveled throughout the United States and Germany during their time together. Sadly, the marriage ended in divorce and Louise bravely relocated to Texas to start her life anew, raising three children alone and without financial help. Thus, Dallas, Texas became her home for many, many years and it was at that time she changed her identification and began going by her first name, Marjorie. She eventually married an easy-going Jr. High math teacher by the name of William (Bill) Gerbetz who introduced her to the world of square dancing. They came to enjoy many years of dancing, traveling and rural country living until Bill's health issues interfered, culminating in his own death. Marjorie moved to California in 2007 to be near her older daughter & favorite son-in-law. She and her beloved cocker spaniel, "Lady", loved their time together in her new home and her initial years in California were some of her best in late life. Unfortunately, she was moved to the Lompoc Convalescent Care Center after a debilitating fall, where she remained for four years preceding her death. Marjorie is survived by her two daughters, Connie Creekmur Barlow (Lompoc, California) and Cheryl Bessette Spooner (Denton, Texas); and step-son, Ron Bessette, Jr. (Las Vegas, Nevada) of whom she was very fond. Also surviving are her two very dear sisters, Carolyn Purdue Bloss (Evansville, Indiana) and Mary Purdue Board (Silva, Missouri). Eddy was born on December 22, 1945, at Duncan, to the late Mr. William Meredith Bass and Mrs. Edna Estelle Altom Bass. He departed this life on Saturday, April 04, 2026, at his home in Ardmore. Eddy grew up in Healdton, where he attended school and graduated with the class of 1964. While in High School he taught himself how to play guitar and played in a band called ?The Rengades?. Following graduation Eddy joined the Air Force with basic training at Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio, Texas followed by special language training in Russian at Syracuse University in New York. He was then stationed in Turkey on the Black Sea. In 1969, Eddy married Linda Littig and they had three children Jason, Jamie and Jennifer. Eddy was a man of many talents with a nickname of ?Mr. Fix it? and got his quick-wit from his mother. He never shied away from hard work, dedicated to any task at hand, detail-oriented and took great pride in rebuilding vintage airplanes. Early in his career as a pilot he flew mail and money from Oklahoma to Texas, worked as a crop duster, flight instructor and air traffic controller. Eddy retired from the Federal Aviation Administration as the administrative instructor in 2000. In his later years, Eddy worked as a private pilot flying corporate jets locally out of the Ardmore Downtown and Ardmore Municipal Airports. He married Tina Webb Daniels on June 21, 2008. Eddy and Tina enjoyed several years flying around the United States, playing guitar in the choir at Trinity Baptist Church, fishing and frying his catch for his family until his health declined. He was preceded in death by his parents; his sister Ethylene Byrd and her husband Frank; Brother-in-law Larry Webb; nephews Brian Keith McLain and Dean Alldredge. | 1079 | Alfred Allegany County, New York, Wednesday, April 26, 1905 Mrs. Willis Woodruff The death of Fannie Pope Woodruff came as a great shock to the whole community, though we knew of her serious illness which began some two weeks ago. It did not seem that we could spare her, she was such a help in the church and community. In the Sabbath school she was an earnest and devoted teacher, in the Ladies? Society she was a very active member, in her home she left no task untired that would in any way conduce to the comfort of the family. She was the daughter of Horatio and Angeline Pope, and was born in Hartsville township, Dec. 11, 1861, and was the fifth one in a family of eight, one brother and six sisters. These survive her except the parents and the oldest sister. She was converted and joined the Hartsville Seventh-day Baptist church when she was thirteen years of age, and transferred her membership to the second Alfred Seventh-day Baptist church in October, 1896, and has been a most faithful member. In December 1890, she was united in marriage to Willis R. Woodruff and to them were born two sons: William Pope, and Charles Eldin, who survive her. She passed to her peaceful home the evening after the Sabbath, April 22d, 1905. The funeral services were held at the church, April 25th, and a large company of relatives and friends filled the church to its full capacity. The society to which she belonged was there in a body. Her Sabbath school class of little girls drew us afresh to tears as they filed past the casket and each dropped a carnation within. The music was rendered by the regular church choir of twenty voices. The service was conducted by Pastor Sayre assisted by Elder B.F. Rogers. He graduated from Muskogee High School, and attended the University of Oklahoma. An opportunity to join the Navy was presented and his adventure began. During his 22 year career in the military, he and his family lived in many locations along the East coast, New Mexico and Puerto Rico. His career included serving as a P-3 pilot for anti-submarine and rescue surveillance, serving as the Nuclear Weapons officer on the USS Intrepid aircraft carrier, and many other important roles. During his last tour in Puerto Rico, Bob completed his Bachelor of Business Administration, Magna Cum Laude, from Inter-American University of Puerto Rico. During his first tour in Hawaii, Bob met Allee Curtis of Amarillo. After a 4 month courtship, they were married on November 25, 1961. They were blessed with 52 wonderful years together. Their first child, Stephen L. Bass was born in New Iberia, Louisiana in 1963. In 1965, Allison L. Bass was born in Amarillo, Texas. Bob moved his family to Amarillo to begin another phase of life upon retiring from the Navy in June 1977. Bob began a new career with First National Bank working in several of the bank departments with many respected colleagues and spent 14 years as a Commercial Loan Officer. Bob was dedicated to the bank, his customers and to Amarillo. In 1991, he went to work for the Amarillo Chamber of Commerce, and in 1994 he led the Business and Retention program. In 1996 he moved to the Amarillo Economic Development Corporation as Vice President and Projects Manager. He was with the AEDC until he retired in October 2003. A major project for Bob while at the AEDC was his involvement in bringing the Bell Helicopter Assembly Plant to Amarillo. He continued after retirement to work as a consultant with AEDC until 2010. His community activities were important to him and include United Way of Amarillo Citizens Budget Committee and Board of Directors, YMCA Board of Directors, Amarillo International Airport Board of Directors Chairman, Potter/Randal County Appraisal District Board of Directors-President, Presbyterian Home for Children Board of Directors-President, Amarillo Business & Professional Men's Club-President, The Rotary Club of Amarillo, and Harrington Regional Medical Center Board of Directors. Bob was an invaluable member of First Presbyterian Church and served as a Deacon and Elder for many years. He was chairman of the Finance Committee for 7 years and served as personnel chairman and led a special project for church expansion. Survivors include his wife Allee Bass; son Dr. Stephen L. Lane Miller Bessette Moria Lane "Moe" Miller Bessette passed away peacefully on Sept. 4 in her home at the age of 80. Moe was born on May 9, 1945, to Nora and Fred Miller Jr. in Lake Charles. She was a graduate of Lake Charles High, where she was a member of the Kilties. She attended LSU and in 1965, married her high school sweetheart, Harvey Bessette. After Harvey graduated from McNeese State University, he and Moe lived at Fort Knox, Ky. and then in Augsburg, Germany, while Harvey served in the U.S. Army. In 1968, they returned to Lake Charles to start their family and their first business. Moe grew up around the real estate and construction business and over the years, she managed all of her and Harvey's rental properties. In 1986, She and Harvey started their own construction company, Bessette Development Corporation. They worked side by side for many years and together they built many homes and commercial buildings all over Southwest Louisiana. In 1988, Moe became a licensed real estate agent and in 1990, they started CENTURY 21 Bessette Realty. Moe was a committed member of the Catholic Church. She served as a eucharistic minister, was a member of the Lay Carmelites and the Catholic Daughters. The ministry she loved the most was teaching CCD to second graders at Our Lady of Good Counsel Catholic Church. Fondly known as "Miss Moe", she helped many children prepare for their first reconciliation and first communion. Moe was a master of needlepoint, a lover of travel, and an avid reader. She was also a talented seamstress and enjoyed making baptismal bibs for her church and stoles for her priests. As much as she enjoyed working alongside Harvey and working in her church, family was always most important to her. Not a day went by when Moe didn't talk about how much her children, grandchildren, great grandchild and family meant to her. Moria is survived by her loving husband of 60 years, Harvey; her daughters, Tobie Hodgkins (Michael)and Tara Demarie (Paul); grandsons, Wyatt Demarie (Patton), Kade (Kristen) Demarie, Hunter Hodgkins, anf William Hodgkins (Skye), and great-grandson, Skip Grayson Demarie. She was predeceased by her parents and her mother-in-Law and father-in-Law, Annie and Clarence Bessette. The family would like to thank Harbor Hospice, Home Instead Senior Care and especially her long-time caregiver, Stephanie Schlesinger for their excellent care. He was the husband of Claire Y. (Bessette) Lockwood, to whom he was married on May 21, 1955. He was born in Lincoln, R.I. on Jan. 13, 1937, he was a son of the late Philip J. Lockwood Sr. and Kathryn (Gaynor) Lockwood. He was raised and educated in Pawtucket, R.I., where he was a 1954 graduate of the former Pawtucket East High School. Mr. Lockwood proudly served as a member of the United States Navy Reserve.He moved to Norfolk in 2004 from Lucien Drive in South Attleboro, where he had resided since 2000. Prior to moving to South Attleboro, Mr. Lockwood was a resident of Steere Street, Attleboro from 1977 to 2000, and had resided in New Jersey from 1972 to 1977, and in Seekonk from 1959 to 1972. Mr. Lockwood was employed as a transportation manager in the trucking industry for many years prior to his retirement in 2001. He worked for numerous companies during his career, including Franklin Environmental Services and St. Johnsbury Trucking Co. Inc. Since moving to Norfolk, he was a communicant of St. Jude's Roman Catholic Church, and was a former longtime communicant of St. Mary's Roman Catholic Church in Seekonk, where he served as a Eucharistic minister, lecturer and CCD-Confraternity of Christian Doctrine teacher. He was a longtime volunteer at the National Shrine of Our Lady of LaSalette in Attleboro, Mr. Lockwood was active in the Family Retreat program from 1964 to 1972, where he assisted with the children's program and assisted the counselors. A man of strong religious convictions, Mr. Lockwood was an active volunteer in Marriage Encounter in Massachusetts and New Jersey. In earlier years, he served as an assistant scoutmaster for the Boy Scouts of America when his boys were young. He and his wife enjoyed square dancing. Mr. Lockwood enjoyed creating poetry. He was the husband of Claire Y. (Bessette) Lockwood whom he married on May 21, 1955. In addition to his wife of almost 55 years, he leaves seven children: Denise C. Bass died at five o?clock yesterday morning at the resident of her mother, Mrs. Elizabeth Smith, 282 Jackson street, after an illness of perhaps three weeks. The announcement of the death of Mrs. Bass was not wholly unexpected, as it has been known that her condition was precarious. She was esteemed among many friends in Americus, her home for several years, and among these the announcement of her death brings deep sorrow. And this will be shared by other friends in many cities of the state. Several weeks ago Mrs. Bass came from her home in New York City to visit her mother, Mrs. Smith, and daughter, Mrs. Clifford Shellman, in Americus. Only a few days after arriving here she became ill and gradually grew worse, the end coming at an early hour yesterday, as stated. Mrs. Bass was the widow of Captain J.M. Bass, the family residing in Americus for a number of years while Captain Bass held the position of general manager of the S.A. & M. Railway. She was reared in Macon, where the family also resided for many years. For some time past Mrs. Bass had made her home in New York with her daughter, Mrs. E.W. Davis, of 153 West 44th street, and who was recently summoned here on account of her mother?s illness. Mrs. Bass is survived by her mother and two daughters and a sister residing in Little Rock. The funeral services will be held at the Presbyterian church here at 12 o?clock, noon, today, conducted by the pastor, Rev. Le Roy G. Henderson. Upon conclusion of this service the remains will be taken by the 1:34 p.m. train to Macon, and at 5 o?clock this afternoon laid to rest by the side of her late husband in Rose Hill cemetery. | 1088 | Amherst College Allen D. Rugg ?43 Al Rugg died peacefully in his sleep last December 24 at home in Greenfield, MA, after attending Christmas Eve services with his wife, Mary Ann. He was eighty six. Al came to Amherst by way of the Greenfield public school system and Deerfield Academy. He was preceded at Amherst by a grandfather, an uncle, and his father in the classes of 1882, 1910, and 1914 respectively. In college, he joined Chi Phi fraternity, served on the Intramural Council, and was a solid student, graduating cum laude at our Class?s accelerated ceremony in January, 1943. He joined the navy in the V-7 program and shortly after graduation received training at Columbia Univ. to earn a commission as an ensign. He was assigned for further training at the Harvard Business School and became a supply officer serving at Pearl Harbor. Following the war, Al returned home to join the family business, Rugg Manufacturing Company, in Greenfield, where he spent his entire business career until his retirement in 1990. Under Al?s leadership the company grew and prospered. Shortly after receiving his navy commission, Al married Louise Bassett of Scarsdale, NY. Their marriage produced four daughters and a son. Sadly, Louise, whom many of us knew from Class Reunions, died from cancer in 1998. Al remarried in 2006 to Mary Ann Krenzke, a parishoner of the Second Congregational Church in Greenfield, of which Al was a lifelong member. It was at our Class mini-reunions in 2006 and 2007 that we got to meet and enjoy the company of Mary Ann with Al. Before his death I was only vaguely aware of the scope of Al?s activities outside his company business, because Al himself was not one to talk about his accomplishments. It took his obituary in a local newspaper to show me the extent to which he applied his hard work and leadership skills in helping the wider community in which he lived. Along with serving in leadership positions with industry associations and civic organizations, Al served the Greenfield Second Congregational Church as superintendent, as teacher in the church school, and as chairman of the Stewardship Committee. He was also a board member of the Franklin Medical Center, helped found the Franklin/Hampshire Community Mental Health Center, served on its board for twenty years, and served other community organizations too numerous to list here. We of the Amherst Class of 1943 were privileged to enjoy the benefit of Al?s leadership and generosity. For our Class he was a go-to guy for help in getting materials and services needed for Reunions and served as chairman of our 60th Reunion. For me personally he helped with advice on various local services when my wife and I moved from Virginia to Pelham, MA in 1993. In the fall of 2002 Al invited Ted and Jary Greene and my wife and I to lunch at his house to help him plan for our 60th Reunion, Al prepared a complete lunch for us, including an excellent apple pie he had baked himself. When my wife and I attended the celebration of Al?s life at his church, we had the pleasure of not only hearing from his children and grandchildren and all he had done for them, but of meeting most of them in person. We learned about the family hikes he took them on, his love of food and cooking, and how he had already prepared food for the family Christmas holiday celebration, which his death prevented him from attending in person but for which he was very much there in spirit. In addition to Mary Ann, his five children and their spouses, Al is survived by his brother, William, his sister, Dorothy, twelve grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren. At the same time we offer our sympathy for their loss, we also congratulate them for having the love and companionship of this devoted family man and generous community leader. Bassett Mrs. Cornelia Sophia Bassett died at the family residence in Toledo, Ohio, at two o?clock Thursday morning, April 17, 1879, of congestion of the heart and lungs, aged 52 years, 11 months and 20 days. Mrs. Bassett was born in Rootstown, Portage County, Ohio, April 27, 1826; was a sister of Mrs. Horace B. Camp, of Cleveland, and daughter of the late Abraham and Sarah Olmstead, who came from Millford, Conn. and settled in Rootstown, in May, 1822. August 16, 1848, she was married to Edward P. Bassett, who studied law with Judge Day, and was admitted to the bar in Ravenna, at the October Term, 1845. Mrs. Bassett was the mother of five children, viz: Francis D., born May 29, 1845, died July 27, the same years; Edward Aa, born March 27, 1848; Louis E., born November 10, 1851; Charles O. Born July 16, 1856; Cornelia Sarah, born December 5, 1868. Mrs. Bassett leaves a devoted husband, four children and three grandchildren to mourn their irreparable loss. From the time of their marriage to 1847, Mr. and Mrs. Bassett resided in Ravenna. Since then their home has been in Toledo. Mrs. Bassett in many respects, was a model woman; she possessed in a conspicuous degree native strength and clearness of mind, dignified and attractive in person, easy and engaging in manners, intelligent in conservation, a central attraction in the social circle where she moved, and a charm in the household where she presided. She was domestic in her nature, and to her home was the most endearing place on earth. Like the pure and noble Cornelia, the mother of the Gracchi, if called upon to display her brightest jewels, she could present her children, nursed and instructed by her own hands. She was decided in her convictions and energetic in practicing them. Modest in adopting her own methods of usefulness, she had a happy faculty in winning the esteem and confidence of all. her memory will long linger in sweet perfume in the community where she lived. She has gone, but the story of her life as daughter, sister, wife, mother, friends, presents a beautiful picture, which will neither fade or be forgotten. The funeral obsequies took place at the family residence on the 19th inst. Her remains have been embalmed and will be deposited in a vault until arrangements are made for their removal to Rootstown, the final resting place among her kindred. COM. He is preceded in death by beloved wife Caroline Wroe Bassett, his brother Charles Andrew Loockerman Bassett, MD (Cal), his mother Vesta Loockerman Bassett, his father Harold Bassett, and his grandson Kyle Emerson Bassett. Sandy was born November 7, 1928 in the small town of Crisfield, MD along the Chesapeake Bay. After graduating from Crisfield High School and having a short stint at Hill Boarding School in Pottstown, PA he attended the US Naval Academy in Annapolis, MD. After serving in the US Navy he held jobs with Pratt and Whitney, Honeywell, Amphenol, Etri, Osteodyne, and finally AWI. His career took him to many places in the world including the UK, France, Italy, Greece and Japan as well as nearly every state in the US. Sandy is survived by his three boys, his sister-in-law Nancy, Tad?s wife Cindy, Dana?s wife Le Thu, Joel?s partner Marky, granddaughter Allison, her husband John, cousin Jane and several nieces, nephews, grand nieces, and grand nephews. Sandy was accomplished at many things. He loved skiing which he took up at the young age of 69. Like everything else he tried he put his full effort into the sport, soon taking up the new parabolic skis. He kept up skiing for another 18 years. He was a pilot, first flying navy planes, then taking a very long sabbatical only to take it up again with sail planes when he was well into his 50?s. He would spend many hours working to get the outer surface of his sail plane as frictionless as possible to ensure that it would slip through the air with the minimum of resistance. Then he would go to competitions, dragging Carol along in order to have someone to come find him when the lift ran out ? typically in some farmer?s field well off the beaten track. He remodeled houses, built model rockets and model airplanes, collected baskets full of starfish while snorkeling, and was pretty fearless when trying something new. When Carol got pancreatic cancer, he became her care giver right to the end. Sandy was always kind to others and always polite. He was always ready to help anyone in any way he could and everyone who knew him would always comment on how much fun it was to be around him and know him. Sandy?s family would like to thank the staff of both Legacy Village of Sugarhouse and Enhabit Home Health and Hospice for the fantastic care they provided for Sandy during the last 4 years of his life. They treated him with dignity, compassion, friendship and they eased his passing on to the other side. Born September 25, 1926 in Ann Arbor, she was the daughter of Ernest and Dorthea (Webber) Hanselmann. Virginia graduated from Ann Arbor High School. On August 20, 1948 she married Burl N. Bassett. She was a long time employee of Eberbach & Sons as well as the Ann Arbor Public Schools, retiring in 1989. Virginia was a life-long member of the Bethlehem United Church of Christ. She is survived by her children, Richard Bassett of Ann Arbor, James Bassett and his wife Cindy of Ann Arbor and Janis Dashner and her husband Robert Goddard of Dayton, OH; granddaughter Brooke Bassett of Ann Arbor; sister Lorraine Larmee and husband Wayne of Ann Arbor; sister-in-law Virginia Bassett of Saline, as well as numerous nieces, nephews and extended family members. David Robinson Bassett was born on September 7th, 1928, in Taunton, Massachusetts, to Clarence and Clarissa Bassett. He was later joined by twin siblings, Robert and Elizabeth, and together they attended the Congregational Church and the Taunton public schools. In the summers, the three children attended Camp Lanakila and Aloha Camp in Vermont. There, they immersed themselves in camping, canoeing, sailing, woodcraft, and hiking in the Green Mountains and White Mountains. David began playing the flute at age 9. At age 12, he began traveling to Jamaica Plain to study with George Madsen, flutist in the Boston Symphony Orchestra. He continued his flute playing in the Boston University Orchestra conducted by Arthur Fiedler. David graduated from Harvard College in 1949 and entered Tufts Medical School later that year. At the end of his freshman medical school year, he participated in a summer work-camp experience in Mexico, sponsored by the American Friends Service Committee. While in medical school training at Mount Auburn Hospital in Cambridge, he met Miyoko Inouye, M.D., who had just completed her medical school training at Temple Medical School in Philadelphia. His future bride and her Japanese-American family were placed in internment camps during World War II. By the end of the war in 1945, her family had resettled in Philadelphia. David and Miyoko were married in 1953 under the care of the Westtown Friends Meeting in Pennsylvania. A Quaker pacifist, David Bassett was a conscientious objector to war. He applied for conscientious objector status with his local draft board, which was granted in 1955. In lieu of being drafted into military service, he was assigned to the American Friends Service Committee project located in Orissa, India. He and Miyoko traveled with their newborn daughter, Helen, to India where they spent two years doing public health work in a rural community. In November 1957, the family returned to Philadelphia and resumed medical training. Their son, David, Jr., was born in 1958, and daughter, Joanna, was born in 1959. During this time they attended Quaker meetings in Philadelphia and Swarthmore. In 1963, David obtained a post-fellowship position and joined the Hawaii Cardiovascular Study (HCVS) located at Queens Hospital, Honolulu. Their research dealt with prevention of cardiovascular disease and changes in cardiovascular risk profiles of Japanese and Chinese men who immigrated to the United States. He eventually became the chief of the HCVS and Associate Professor of Public Health at the University of Hawaii School of Public Health. In 1968, David joined the Hypertension Division at the University of Michigan Medical School. They quickly established contacts with the Ann Arbor Friends Meeting community. Given his conscientious objection to military service, he later extended his thinking to the area of conscientious objection to payment for war. Thus, David and Miyoko worked with others to write the World Peace Tax Fund bill which was introduced in the U.S. Congress. This would allow individuals who were conscientiously opposed to war to pay a portion of their federal tax to peaceful organizations instead of the military. This became his life's work, advocating for passage of the World Peace Tax Fund Bill (later called the National Campaign for a Peace Tax Fund Bill and the Religious Freedom Peace Tax Fund Act). Following retirement, David and Miyoko moved in 2005 to a retirement community in Rochester, New York and became members of the Rochester Friends Meeting. Following the death of Miyoko in 2007, David married Nan Gullo Richmond. David is especially remembered for his curiosity, love of classical music, pacifist principles, and his desire to learn about other people's life stories. He is predeceased by his first wife, Miyoko Inouye Bassett, and brother Robert Bassett. He is survived by his children: Helen of Arlington, MA; David (Laura) of Knoxville, TN, and Joanna of Rochester, NY; sister Elizabeth Wolf of Palo Alto, CA; wife Nan Gullo Bassett, grandchildren Jeffrey, Adam (Gabrielle Katz) and Justin Mansfield; Dylan (Anna) Chun, Stephen Bassett, and Rob Kellogg; great-grandson Teddy Chun, step-daughter Molly Ziegler, and step-grandchildren Katie and Anna Ziegler. She was born on May 28, 1920 in Brillion, Wisconsin, the daughter of the late Roy H. and Elsie (Wolf) Bastian. She graduated from Appleton (West) High School. She married Charles Bassett at Mount Olive Ev. Lutheran Church in Appleton in November of 1941. Germaine was employed at Outagamie County Bank, now Wells Fargo, for almost 40 years and retired as Vice President of the Mortgage Department. She was a member of the Appleton Badminton Club in her earlier years, and International Federation of Business and Professional Women (BPW). Germaine was an active lady and enjoyed working in the yard, reading and doing crossword puzzles, and most of all, living on the lake in Winneconne. She and Charlie always looked forward to the neighborhood get-togethers on Saturday. He was born on April 7, 1935, in Newberry, Florida, to John and Elizabeth Bass. William dedicated many years of his career as a correctional officer for the Department of Corrections until his retirement. His time in service extended to the military as well, where he proudly served eight years with the United States Air Force followed by three years with the United States Army. He was an outgoing individual who had a warm spirit and made friends easily, never meeting a stranger throughout his journey. Life for William was enriched by the activities he cherished. He had a profound love for the outdoors, which he expressed through his hobbies of hunting, fishing, boating, and yard work. These passions allowed him to connect deeply with nature and create lasting memories with family and friends. William shared a loving marriage with his wife of nearly 50 years, Betty Bass, and together they raised a family filled with love and support. He is survived by his daughters Lori Foster, Wanda Wall, and Malissa Perryman; his grandchildren Brittney Talmadge, Wyatt Snellgrove, Janell Fenn, Kasie Nocks, Dana Johnson, Danielle Raen-Saunders, Lynsi Bielling, and Hali Shaw; as well as 11 great-grandchildren who brought great joy to his life. His brother, Monroe Bass, also survives him.
