| 1101 | Amherst College Allen D. Rugg ?43 Al Rugg died peacefully in his sleep last December 24 at home in Greenfield, MA, after attending Christmas Eve services with his wife, Mary Ann. He was eighty six. Al came to Amherst by way of the Greenfield public school system and Deerfield Academy. He was preceded at Amherst by a grandfather, an uncle, and his father in the classes of 1882, 1910, and 1914 respectively. In college, he joined Chi Phi fraternity, served on the Intramural Council, and was a solid student, graduating cum laude at our Class?s accelerated ceremony in January, 1943. He joined the navy in the V-7 program and shortly after graduation received training at Columbia Univ. to earn a commission as an ensign. He was assigned for further training at the Harvard Business School and became a supply officer serving at Pearl Harbor. Following the war, Al returned home to join the family business, Rugg Manufacturing Company, in Greenfield, where he spent his entire business career until his retirement in 1990. Under Al?s leadership the company grew and prospered. Shortly after receiving his navy commission, Al married Louise Bassett of Scarsdale, NY. Their marriage produced four daughters and a son. Sadly, Louise, whom many of us knew from Class Reunions, died from cancer in 1998. Al remarried in 2006 to Mary Ann Krenzke, a parishoner of the Second Congregational Church in Greenfield, of which Al was a lifelong member. It was at our Class mini-reunions in 2006 and 2007 that we got to meet and enjoy the company of Mary Ann with Al. Before his death I was only vaguely aware of the scope of Al?s activities outside his company business, because Al himself was not one to talk about his accomplishments. It took his obituary in a local newspaper to show me the extent to which he applied his hard work and leadership skills in helping the wider community in which he lived. Along with serving in leadership positions with industry associations and civic organizations, Al served the Greenfield Second Congregational Church as superintendent, as teacher in the church school, and as chairman of the Stewardship Committee. He was also a board member of the Franklin Medical Center, helped found the Franklin/Hampshire Community Mental Health Center, served on its board for twenty years, and served other community organizations too numerous to list here. We of the Amherst Class of 1943 were privileged to enjoy the benefit of Al?s leadership and generosity. For our Class he was a go-to guy for help in getting materials and services needed for Reunions and served as chairman of our 60th Reunion. For me personally he helped with advice on various local services when my wife and I moved from Virginia to Pelham, MA in 1993. In the fall of 2002 Al invited Ted and Jary Greene and my wife and I to lunch at his house to help him plan for our 60th Reunion, Al prepared a complete lunch for us, including an excellent apple pie he had baked himself. When my wife and I attended the celebration of Al?s life at his church, we had the pleasure of not only hearing from his children and grandchildren and all he had done for them, but of meeting most of them in person. We learned about the family hikes he took them on, his love of food and cooking, and how he had already prepared food for the family Christmas holiday celebration, which his death prevented him from attending in person but for which he was very much there in spirit. In addition to Mary Ann, his five children and their spouses, Al is survived by his brother, William, his sister, Dorothy, twelve grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren. At the same time we offer our sympathy for their loss, we also congratulate them for having the love and companionship of this devoted family man and generous community leader. Bassett Mrs. Cornelia Sophia Bassett died at the family residence in Toledo, Ohio, at two o?clock Thursday morning, April 17, 1879, of congestion of the heart and lungs, aged 52 years, 11 months and 20 days. Mrs. Bassett was born in Rootstown, Portage County, Ohio, April 27, 1826; was a sister of Mrs. Horace B. Camp, of Cleveland, and daughter of the late Abraham and Sarah Olmstead, who came from Millford, Conn. and settled in Rootstown, in May, 1822. August 16, 1848, she was married to Edward P. Bassett, who studied law with Judge Day, and was admitted to the bar in Ravenna, at the October Term, 1845. Mrs. Bassett was the mother of five children, viz: Francis D., born May 29, 1845, died July 27, the same years; Edward Aa, born March 27, 1848; Louis E., born November 10, 1851; Charles O. Born July 16, 1856; Cornelia Sarah, born December 5, 1868. Mrs. Bassett leaves a devoted husband, four children and three grandchildren to mourn their irreparable loss. From the time of their marriage to 1847, Mr. and Mrs. Bassett resided in Ravenna. Since then their home has been in Toledo. Mrs. Bassett in many respects, was a model woman; she possessed in a conspicuous degree native strength and clearness of mind, dignified and attractive in person, easy and engaging in manners, intelligent in conservation, a central attraction in the social circle where she moved, and a charm in the household where she presided. She was domestic in her nature, and to her home was the most endearing place on earth. Like the pure and noble Cornelia, the mother of the Gracchi, if called upon to display her brightest jewels, she could present her children, nursed and instructed by her own hands. She was decided in her convictions and energetic in practicing them. Modest in adopting her own methods of usefulness, she had a happy faculty in winning the esteem and confidence of all. her memory will long linger in sweet perfume in the community where she lived. She has gone, but the story of her life as daughter, sister, wife, mother, friends, presents a beautiful picture, which will neither fade or be forgotten. The funeral obsequies took place at the family residence on the 19th inst. Her remains have been embalmed and will be deposited in a vault until arrangements are made for their removal to Rootstown, the final resting place among her kindred. COM. November 29, 2022 Govert Loockerman Bassett, who was known to all of his friends as Sandy, age 94, passed away on November 29, 2022 at his home in Legacy Village in Sugarhouse, Utah from old age. He is preceded in death by beloved wife Caroline Wroe Bassett, his brother Charles Andrew Loockerman Bassett, MD (Cal), his mother Vesta Loockerman Bassett, his father Harold Bassett, and his grandson Kyle Emerson Bassett. Sandy was born November 7, 1928 in the small town of Crisfield, MD along the Chesapeake Bay. After graduating from Crisfield High School and having a short stint at Hill Boarding School in Pottstown, PA he attended the US Naval Academy in Annapolis, MD. After serving in the US Navy he held jobs with Pratt and Whitney, Honeywell, Amphenol, Etri, Osteodyne, and finally AWI. His career took him to many places in the world including the UK, France, Italy, Greece and Japan as well as nearly every state in the US. Sandy met his wife Carol in 1952 and after a brief time they were married on his birthday in 1953. Sandy and Carol had three boys, Govert Loockerman II (Tad), Dana Wroe, and Joel Breckenridge. Sandy is survived by his three boys, his sister-in-law Nancy, Tad?s wife Cindy, Dana?s wife Le Thu, Joel?s partner Marky, granddaughter Allison, her husband John, cousin Jane and several nieces, nephews, grand nieces, and grand nephews. Sandy was accomplished at many things. He loved skiing which he took up at the young age of 69. Like everything else he tried he put his full effort into the sport, soon taking up the new parabolic skis. He kept up skiing for another 18 years. He was a pilot, first flying navy planes, then taking a very long sabbatical only to take it up again with sail planes when he was well into his 50?s. He would spend many hours working to get the outer surface of his sail plane as frictionless as possible to ensure that it would slip through the air with the minimum of resistance. Then he would go to competitions, dragging Carol along in order to have someone to come find him when the lift ran out ? typically in some farmer?s field well off the beaten track. He remodeled houses, built model rockets and model airplanes, collected baskets full of starfish while snorkeling, and was pretty fearless when trying something new. When Carol got pancreatic cancer, he became her care giver right to the end. Sandy was always kind to others and always polite. He was always ready to help anyone in any way he could and everyone who knew him would always comment on how much fun it was to be around him and know him. Sandy?s family would like to thank the staff of both Legacy Village of Sugarhouse and Enhabit Home Health and Hospice for the fantastic care they provided for Sandy during the last 4 years of his life. They treated him with dignity, compassion, friendship and they eased his passing on to the other side. He peacefully passed away in his home state of California on July 31, 2023, at the age of 70. Sammy's life was marked by unwavering service to his country and community. He devoted a decade of his early life to the United States Army, demonstrating an extraordinary commitment to duty, honor, and country. Following his military service, Sammy continued to protect and serve his community as a Federal Police Officer for Fort Hueneme Naval Base for another decade. His dedication to maintaining peace and security was evident in his work, earning him the respect and admiration of his colleagues and the community he served. In the latter part of his career, Sammy offered his skills and expertise to the Security Service at Denver National Airport. His commitment to ensuring the safety and well-being of others never wavered. Those who worked alongside him often spoke of his unyielding dedication and the compassionate way he approached his responsibilities. Sammy was a loving brother, father, uncle, and great-uncle. He is survived by his sister, son, four nieces, and three great-nieces. His family was a source of immense pride and joy. The love he had for his family was boundless, and he often expressed it through his actions and deeds. His courage and selflessness were the pillars that held his family together, and his absence will be deeply felt by all who knew and loved him. Born September 25, 1926 in Ann Arbor, she was the daughter of Ernest and Dorthea (Webber) Hanselmann. Virginia graduated from Ann Arbor High School. On August 20, 1948 she married Burl N. Bassett. She was a long time employee of Eberbach & Sons as well as the Ann Arbor Public Schools, retiring in 1989. Virginia was a life-long member of the Bethlehem United Church of Christ. She is survived by her children, Richard Bassett of Ann Arbor, James Bassett and his wife Cindy of Ann Arbor and Janis Dashner and her husband Robert Goddard of Dayton, OH; granddaughter Brooke Bassett of Ann Arbor; sister Lorraine Larmee and husband Wayne of Ann Arbor; sister-in-law Virginia Bassett of Saline, as well as numerous nieces, nephews and extended family members. | 1107 | Ann Arbor News, Michigan, December 17, 2021 David Robinson Bassett 9/7/1928 ? 12/11/201 Bassett, David Robinson 9/7/1928 - 12/11/2021 Rochester, NY Age 93, on December 11, 2021, at the Friendly Home in Rochester, NY. David Robinson Bassett was born on September 7th, 1928, in Taunton, Massachusetts, to Clarence and Clarissa Bassett. He was later joined by twin siblings, Robert and Elizabeth, and together they attended the Congregational Church and the Taunton public schools. In the summers, the three children attended Camp Lanakila and Aloha Camp in Vermont. There, they immersed themselves in camping, canoeing, sailing, woodcraft, and hiking in the Green Mountains and White Mountains. David began playing the flute at age 9. At age 12, he began traveling to Jamaica Plain to study with George Madsen, flutist in the Boston Symphony Orchestra. He continued his flute playing in the Boston University Orchestra conducted by Arthur Fiedler. David graduated from Harvard College in 1949 and entered Tufts Medical School later that year. At the end of his freshman medical school year, he participated in a summer work-camp experience in Mexico, sponsored by the American Friends Service Committee. While in medical school training at Mount Auburn Hospital in Cambridge, he met Miyoko Inouye, M.D., who had just completed her medical school training at Temple Medical School in Philadelphia. His future bride and her Japanese-American family were placed in internment camps during World War II. By the end of the war in 1945, her family had resettled in Philadelphia. David and Miyoko were married in 1953 under the care of the Westtown Friends Meeting in Pennsylvania. A Quaker pacifist, David Bassett was a conscientious objector to war. He applied for conscientious objector status with his local draft board, which was granted in 1955. In lieu of being drafted into military service, he was assigned to the American Friends Service Committee project located in Orissa, India. He and Miyoko traveled with their newborn daughter, Helen, to India where they spent two years doing public health work in a rural community. In November 1957, the family returned to Philadelphia and resumed medical training. Their son, David, Jr., was born in 1958, and daughter, Joanna, was born in 1959. During this time they attended Quaker meetings in Philadelphia and Swarthmore. In 1963, David obtained a post-fellowship position and joined the Hawaii Cardiovascular Study (HCVS) located at Queens Hospital, Honolulu. Their research dealt with prevention of cardiovascular disease and changes in cardiovascular risk profiles of Japanese and Chinese men who immigrated to the United States. He eventually became the chief of the HCVS and Associate Professor of Public Health at the University of Hawaii School of Public Health. In 1968, David joined the Hypertension Division at the University of Michigan Medical School. They quickly established contacts with the Ann Arbor Friends Meeting community. Given his conscientious objection to military service, he later extended his thinking to the area of conscientious objection to payment for war. Thus, David and Miyoko worked with others to write the World Peace Tax Fund bill which was introduced in the U.S. Congress. This would allow individuals who were conscientiously opposed to war to pay a portion of their federal tax to peaceful organizations instead of the military. This became his life's work, advocating for passage of the World Peace Tax Fund Bill (later called the National Campaign for a Peace Tax Fund Bill and the Religious Freedom Peace Tax Fund Act). Following retirement, David and Miyoko moved in 2005 to a retirement community in Rochester, New York and became members of the Rochester Friends Meeting. Following the death of Miyoko in 2007, David married Nan Gullo Richmond. David is especially remembered for his curiosity, love of classical music, pacifist principles, and his desire to learn about other people's life stories. He is predeceased by his first wife, Miyoko Inouye Bassett, and brother Robert Bassett. He is survived by his children: Helen of Arlington, MA; David (Laura) of Knoxville, TN, and Joanna of Rochester, NY; sister Elizabeth Wolf of Palo Alto, CA; wife Nan Gullo Bassett, grandchildren Jeffrey, Adam (Gabrielle Katz) and Justin Mansfield; Dylan (Anna) Chun, Stephen Bassett, and Rob Kellogg; great-grandson Teddy Chun, step-daughter Molly Ziegler, and step-grandchildren Katie and Anna Ziegler. She was a hardworking mother who took care of her children, and loved to shop, cross stitch, sew, and do crossword puzzles. Anne was preceded in death by her husband Joe and daughter, JoAnne Bassett Williams. Bassett (Includes Picture) Germaine Bassett, age 93, of Winneconne, passed away on Saturday, December 21, 2013 at Living Tree Estates in Greenville. She was born on May 28, 1920 in Brillion, Wisconsin, the daughter of the late Roy H. and Elsie (Wolf) Bastian. She graduated from Appleton (West) High School. She married Charles Bassett at Mount Olive Ev. Lutheran Church in Appleton in November of 1941. Germaine was employed at Outagamie County Bank, now Wells Fargo, for almost 40 years and retired as Vice President of the Mortgage Department. She was a member of the Appleton Badminton Club in her earlier years, and International Federation of Business and Professional Women (BPW). Germaine was an active lady and enjoyed working in the yard, reading and doing crossword puzzles, and most of all, living on the lake in Winneconne. She and Charlie always looked forward to the neighborhood get-togethers on Saturday. Germaine is survived by her sons: Bill (Sue) Bassett and Jim (Sherry) Bassett, both of Winneconne; grandchildren: Kim (Joe) Bassett-Heitzmann of Appleton and Tamara Bassett of Dallas, Texas; step-grandchildren: Jeff Abitz and Kelly (Pat) Camber; great grandchildren: Chase and Alexa Bassett-Heitzmann; step-great grandchildren: Zach Abitz, Sean and Ryan Camber; and her sister, Delores Schroeder of Greenville. She is further survived by nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Germaine was preceded in death by her husband, Charlie Bassett, her brother-in-law, Ronald Schroeder, and a nephew, John "Jack" Schroeder. August 23, 2025 William Allen Bass, age 90, passed away peacefully on August 23, 2025, at the Veterans Medical Center in Lake City, Florida, after an extended illness. He was born on April 7, 1935, in Newberry, Florida, to John and Elizabeth Bass. William dedicated many years of his career as a correctional officer for the Department of Corrections until his retirement. His time in service extended to the military as well, where he proudly served eight years with the United States Air Force followed by three years with the United States Army. He was an outgoing individual who had a warm spirit and made friends easily, never meeting a stranger throughout his journey. Life for William was enriched by the activities he cherished. He had a profound love for the outdoors, which he expressed through his hobbies of hunting, fishing, boating, and yard work. These passions allowed him to connect deeply with nature and create lasting memories with family and friends. William shared a loving marriage with his wife of nearly 50 years, Betty Bass, and together they raised a family filled with love and support. He is survived by his daughters Lori Foster, Wanda Wall, and Malissa Perryman; his grandchildren Brittney Talmadge, Wyatt Snellgrove, Janell Fenn, Kasie Nocks, Dana Johnson, Danielle Raen-Saunders, Lynsi Bielling, and Hali Shaw; as well as 11 great-grandchildren who brought great joy to his life. His brother, Monroe Bass, also survives him. William is preceded in death by his parents, John and Elizabeth Bass; his daughters Shelly Snellgrove and Kealyn Brown; his son Gary Rabon; his grandson Dillon Snellgrove; and his siblings Baxter, Robert, and Thomas Bass, along with his sister Martha Holder. Family and friends are invited to honor William?s life and legacy with visitation on August 27, 2025, from 10:00am to 10:30am, followed by a graveside service at 10:30am. She loved going to West Central sporting events, however, her greatest passion was spending time with her family especially her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. December 26, 2022 Kevin Dion Bassett of Hayden, Idaho passed away on December 26th of natural causes. He was born in Nampa, Idaho on June 25th 1967 to Mick Bassett of Ontario, Oregon and Judy LeDoux of Eureka, Montana. Kevin graduated high school in Ontario, Oregon in 1985. After graduating he went on to attend Oregon Institute of Technology earning a degree in radiology, later settling in Coeur d' Alene, Idaho, beginning his career at then Kootenai Memorial Hospital. He later moved on to Northwest Specialty Hospital in Post Falls, Idaho. He married Lisa Jones and was the proud father of two children Emily and Eric. They later divorced. He was an avid hunter, fisherman and competed in cross-country motorcycle racing, later turning his competitive spirit to golfing, competing in many tournaments. He had an adventurous spirit, living his life always on his own terms. This included vacation trips to Mexico with his fiancé Brenda and at one time tandem skydiving while there. Kevin enjoyed being with family and friends while sometimes entertaining them by relating stories of his oft calamitous-like incidents and adventures. He thoroughly enjoyed his life's work in radiology, often commenting on how magnificently the human body was created. His life ended but his spirit lives on with all the countless friends and family who not only liked him but loved him. Preceded in death by her most-cherished Ike and her daughter, Mary C. Iglehart. Mary is survived by her daughter, Julia A. Brandt; her special grandsons, Eric Brandt (Jennifer, Jack and London) and Kristopher Brandt (Heather, Maddie and Dylan), and entire communities of friends whose lives she impacted so greatly. Born in Castleton, VT to John F. and Grace Mary (Bassett) Lynch, Mary clung to her spartan New England-rearing and used it as a compass to navigate her life of love and service to all. One of 13 children, Mary necessarily lived with such tenacity and vigor that it often resulted in her patented, unexpected comedy - on one such occasion young Mary reminded her priest of his 25-cent debt for her gardening services . . . whilst in the confessional! Mary was a GIANT, even amongst the Greatest Generation. A quintessential lady, and true woman of valor, she committed herself to both God and Country. Though she was one of the first to voluntarily enlist in the Women's Army Corps in 1942, she was most proud of running a tight ship in her storied 20-year, post-military career in civil service. The embodiment of grace and compassion, she devoted her life to the Catholic church and its ministries, and remained a staple and persistent (if not persnickety) volunteer at most all parish events. 'Grams' (to an entire generation of young people) wholly adored her two grandsons, and not only guided their coming-of-age journeys, but forever shaped the paths of their friends, schoolmates and neighbors. A natural teacher and mentor, she was quick to let you know exactly where she stood on any matter, yet was unrelentingly there to help at any time, and with any need - in almost magical ways. Proudly Irish to the core, Grams first met "her Walter" on St. Patrick's day (of course), and ornamented her daily family life with all the wisdom, fare, and mischievousness of the Emerald Isle. Her powerful conveyance and indelible storytelling adorned the myriad cards of encouragement (in proper longhand) that she must have sent daily to all those fortunate enough to have crossed her path. She knew nothing of short conversations, and all were instantly drawn to her dry wit, inviting demeanor and wry smile. Armed with a legendary sweet tooth and unmatched hospitality, one couldn't be luckier than to recount a life lesson learned over a cup of coffee/tea and a macaroon (or half of a light beer, if the hour permitted). An Army brat, Bob attended Gordon Military High School in Barnesville, Georgia, and went on to spend two years at Stetson University in DeLand, Florida. He then enlisted with the United States Army, serving 3 years as a gunsmith from 1960 to 1963, mostly posted in Schwabisch Gmund, Germany. Upon leaving the Army out of Fort Bliss, TX, he returned to Florida where he initially worked for organizations including the Florida Road Department, the Daytona Speedway, and later as a bank teller at the Barnett Bank in DeLand, FL. He later went on to build a distinguished career as an electrical, mechanical, and safety engineer, working with organizations that included NASA (Cape Canaveral, FL), General Electric (San Jose, CA), Astronautics (Milwaukee, WI), Martin Marietta (Orlando, FL), and Coleman Research (Orlando, FL). True to his engineer?s mind, Bob lived by the philosophy of working smarter, not harder, finding thoughtful, practical solutions in his career, his hobbies, and everyday life. While working full time, Bob earned his bachelor?s degree at Milwaukee School of Engineering and later his MBA from the Florida Institute of Technology. He attended classes at night and studied after long workdays, faithfully pressing forward toward his degree. Each evening his studies came to a halt at 9 p.m. when the family cat would knock his paperwork off the desk, letting him know it was time to wrap up the books and take the nightly ice cream break. It became one of those small, beloved rituals that reflected both Bob?s discipline and the warmth of home life around him. He remained an avid reader and lifelong learner, always curious and always eager to share what he knew. Throughout his life, Bob gave generously of his time and talents. A 32nd Degree Mason, he belonged to the Scottish Rite of Freemasonry in St. Cloud, FL, and maintained his membership with the Bahia Shriners in Orlando, Florida, serving as Commander of the Legion of Honor of the Bahia Shrine in 1998. He also supported Make-A-Wish Foundation and Give Kids the World, serving ice cream to critically ill children and their families. As part of the Bahia Shrine Sojourners, he provided historical education in costume for school programs. He was a member of the Sons of the American Revolution in Arkansas, volunteered through Vet to Vet with Arkansas Hospice, and brought joy to countless people as ?Stringbean? the Clown with the Hot Springs Village Shrine Club. Bob loved history, machinery, moto??rcycles, and people. He was a member of the Antique Gun Club in Conway, Arkansas, where he enjoyed presenting ?show and tell? from his vast collection of historic guns. He also belonged to the Honda Gold Wing Motorcycle Club, embracing the friendships and adventures that came with the open road. Those who knew Bob will remember his remarkable gift for conversation. In the spirit of Will Rogers, Bob truly never met a stranger. His mother once joked that he had been vaccinated with a phonograph needle, and Bob likened himself to a ?Chatty Cathy? doll with a pull string. He could talk with anyone about anything, often surprising tour guides and docents with little-known facts during his travels. He knew a little about a lot, and a lot about many things. Bob was especially proud of Carol, whom he lovingly credited with introducing him to FUN. She often joked that she was his ?novelty act.? With Carol by his side, Bob grew from a strait-laced rule follower into someone willing to try new experiences, from jet skis and motorcycles to RV adventures together in Arizona, Michigan, Florida, and Texas, joining new organizations and forging deep friendships along the way. Together, they opened the door to enriching adventures and lifelong relationships. The family extends special thanks to the teams at Right at Home and at Life Touch Health (Arkansas Hospice) for the compassionate care they provided throughout Bob?s final days. Marshall Bass requested Martin to leave the dance. It was said that Martin had been drinking and that as the offcer walked away the youth attacked him with a knife, inflicting several abdomen wounds. A posse of officers who went ot Martin?s home in Gillett reported that the youth had barricaded himself in the house and they considered it inadvisable to attempt to arrest him. Mixon Jr. and the late Jerry Hebert Bass Sr., died Saturday at Fort Smith. He had been ill with hepatitis for five months. He was a 1962 graduate of Hall High School where he was president of the senior class and a two-year starter for the Warriors football team, playing end and place-kicker. In 1961, he caught a touchdown pass and then kicked the extra point that beat the Pine Bluff Zebras 7 to 6. The same year, he kicked a 32-yard field goal in the final seconds of a game to beat the Benton Panthers 9 to 7. He attended Harvard University and the University of Arkansas. Fatal Accident Hugh Bassett, a boy of 17 years of age, son of Mr. Henry Bassett, publican, Church Street, Downpatrick, went to spend Christmas Day with his grandfather Mr. Hugh Hughes, of Ballyrennan. Between 3 and 4 o?clock in the afternoon, he took out a gun to shoot small birds. In crossing the ditch down to the road, it is supposed that he put out the gun to support himself, and that in this way it went off, lodging the whole contents in his breast, and causing instantaneous death. So close was the gun to him that the adding set fire to his clothes, a great portion of which was burned. Deceased was serving his time to the Messrs Joson, builder, of this town. While in Bedford, she taught swimming and diving at the YWCA. She studied piano for several years. Wendy enjoyed swimming, water skiing, fishing, camping, crocheting, cross stitching, writing poetry, canning, and flea marketing. She was married to her husband, Melvin Bass for 43 years, until his death in 2021. They had several businesses in Hot Springs, including: Jimbo?s Restaurant, Sundown Lounge, M&M Hotel and a Resale Shop. They then moved to North Little Rock. She worked at Fisher Lime and Cement for a few years, then retired from the City of North Little Rock where she worked as a secretary to the Civil Service Commission and Community Development. Wendy then worked as a medical transcriptionist for a few years, eventually buying out the company and worked independently. Wendy eventually had to retire due to health reasons. She and Melvin enjoyed their retirement from their jobs by gardening (him) and canning (her) what Melvin grew. Wendy is preceded in death by her parents, grandparents, and her husband. She is survived by her sons, Joseph ?JD? A lifelong resident of Buncombe County, Mr. Bassett received his education from Grace High School and Asheville-Biltmore College where he earned a degree in business. He was working at J.B. May Market in 1941 when Pearl Harbor was attacked. By May of 1942, he was serving in the United States Marine Corps in the South Pacific as an airplane armorer and aviation ordinance specialist. Upon returning, he married the love of his life, Jean Grisette. Together they shared 71 years of marriage. Charles spent the early part of his career at the Smoky Mountain Hatching Egg Service in Fairview. He was an integral part in the development of the Fairview Volunteer Fire Department, where he served as Assistant Chief and on the Board of Directors. Charles spent the latter part of his career at Finkelstein's, Inc. where he had the privilege of working alongside his brother June and his son-in-law Joel. Together they have had the honor of serving the people of western North Carolina and beyond. He was a 32nd degree Mason and a longtime member of First Presbyterian Church of Asheville, where he served as a Sunday school teacher, deacon, and elder. Always a Marine, Mr. Bassett was instrumental in the development of the Western North Carolina Veterans Memorial, located in the heart of downtown Asheville. He is preceded in death by his parents, Henry Grant and Rosa Bassett; his brothers, H.G. "June" Bassett and Robert "Bob" Bassett. Charles is survived by his wife, Jean; daughters, Carol McManus (Paul) of Port Orchard, WA, Cathy Piercy (Cliff), of Colorado Springs, CO, and Laura Parker (Joel) of Asheville, NC; and a sister, Mary Rose Davis. He is also survived by his grandchildren: Karen (Sven), Eric, David (Lisa), Chris (Shane), Drew (Rachel), and Cameron; great grandchildren: Colin, Claire, Erik, Thomas (Alexandra), Amanda, Sarah, Jaziah, and Nathan; great great grandchildren: Thomas, Benjamin, and Erik Jr.; and many nieces and nephews. The son of the late William and Diane Bassett, Doug was born in Boston, Massachusetts on May 30, 1973. Doug attended schools in Easton, Massachusetts, Brattleboro and Pioneer Valley, Massachusetts and ultimately receiving his GED. Doug was an amazing artist and took classes at River Valley Gallery School downtown. His favorite drawing tools were Cray-pas pastels. From a young age, Doug was always interested in the way things work. He could take apart a television, put it back together and have leftover parts that he claimed weren't needed. He was so brilliant! He loved to read the World Almanac for fun. Doug had received some sort of amateur radio in high school and his love of radio began. Later in life he got his first job at WKVT and then moved on to WTSA. He had an amazing radio voice. After years in radio, he then worked at Hannaford's in Produce and had become the Assistant Produce Manager. If you didn't catch Doug in the Produce department then you might see him flying around town on his beloved electric bike. Doug enjoyed simple joys and had a sweet, gentle soul. He leaves behind his son, Daniel McCauley-Bassett of Chesapeake, Virginia and his sister, Elisabeth Bassett of Brattleboro along with many extended family members and friends.
