She was 91. Anna was preceded in death by her husband of 39 years, Johnie G. Bass, in 1977; a grandson; a great-granddaughter; a sister; three brothers; and a son, Charles. She is survived by a daughter, Dorothy Newton of Boonville; five sons, Johnie E. Bass, Chester Bass and Paul Bass, all of Boonville, Ralph Bass of Richland, and Kenneth Bass of Eldorado, Ill.; 22 grandchildren; 34 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; a brother, Sam Lutz of Florida; and a special sister-in-law. Funeral services were held Monday, March 7 at Koehler Funeral Home-Boonville Chapel, with Rev. Donald Grubb officiating. Burial followed in Degonia Cemetery in Degonia Springs. | 1202 | Boonville Standard, January 2, 1920 Mrs. India Scales AGED LADY DIES - Mrs. India Scales, a well-known and much loved lady, died at her home near Scalesville Saturday evening, Dec. 20, of advancing paralysis following an illness of several months. On Nov. 20, Mrs. Scales was taken to her bed and never recovered. The funeral services were held at South Fork church on Monday afternoon at 1 o'clock, Rev. T.M. Smith officiating, with burial in South Fork cemetery. Mrs. Scales was born Oct. 8, 1851, and was 68 years, 2 months and 12 days of age. On Sept. 9, 1871, she was united in marriage to John L. Scales. Eight children were born to this union, one son of whom preceded her in death eighteen years ago. Five daughters and two sons are living, as follows: Mrs. Chas. Kelley, Mrs. William Howard of Boonville; Mrs. Amos Skelton of Lynnville, Mrs. Otto Erwin, Lillian Scales and Herman Scales of Scalesville; Raymond Scales of Huntingburg. Mrs. Scales has always been a kind and much loved woman by all who knew her, always ready to do a kind and helpful deed. Graveside services will be held at 2:00 PM Friday, May 8, 2026, at Texola ?emetery in Texola, Oklahoma, with Brandon Dukes officiating. Viewing will take place Friday from 9:00 AM to 12:30 PM at the funeral home in Wheeler prior to the service. Arrangements are under the care of Robertson Funeral Directors of Wheeler. Barbara was born October 15, 1934, in Texola, Oklahoma, to Rodney Ivan and Zelpha Mae (Darnell) Jaggers. She married Jim Bert Bass on March 24, 1951, in Texola. Barbara lived in Borger for 59 years before moving to Wheeler County in 2008. A faithful servant Barbara was a member of the Shamrock Church of Christ and also attended the Wheeler Church of Christ. She dedicated many years to teaching Sunday school and served her church in numerous ways. Barbara was a devoted homemaker and a loving mother and grandmother who cherished her family deeply. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Jim Bert Bass, on January 24, 2020; her sister, Betty Nell Hill; and a grandson, Cole Barnett Bass. Survivors include her son, Rodney Bass and wife Greta of Wheeler; two daughters, Elizabeth Denton and husband Larry of Borger and Cynthia Haney and husband Mark of The Woodlands; six grandchildren, Dustin Haney and wife Cody, Marquel Bott and husband Nick, Michael Denton, John Denton, Craig Bass and Amanda Green, and Rachel Dorris; and twelve great-grandchildren, Makaela, Levi, Hank, Hazel, Hunter and wife Paige, Camden, Kolbi, Carter, Greyson, Hazen, Bauer, and London. | 1204 | Boston Globe, Massachusetts, 20 March 2023 Henry Bass Jr. BASS, Henry Jr. A economist and filmmaker, died March 17, at home in Belmont, at the age of 88, from normal pressure hydrocephalus. Henry lived bravely, always up for a new challenge. He was born in Nashville, Tennessee, the son of Henry Leonidas Bass, Sr. and Louisa Roseborough, and raised in nearby Hopkinsville, Kentucky, spoiled not only by his parents and grandmother but by three older half-sisters. At the age of 15, with his father dying of emphysema, Henry was sent to boarding school at Sewanee Military Academy in Sewanee, Tennessee, where he was a member of the debate team. Sewanee was a compromise. His father wanted him to go to Phillips Exeter Academy in New Hampshire, where he had spent a happy year decades earlier. His mother didn't want him to go so far away. She had been born in Sewanee and agreed to that. Henry applied to Williams College without visiting it. One of his sisters had seen a magazine photo showing students in class at Williams College wearing flannel shirts rather than the era's usual jackets and ties. "Here's a place for my "brother," she remarked. The admissions director agreed and recruited Henry, a debater at Sewanee, for the Williams debate team. Henry majored in political economy, and the Williams economics department arranged for him to go to graduate school at Harvard. He began teaching economics at Northeastern and Boston universities while still in graduate school; they paid substantially more than Harvard, he noted. A grant from the Scientific American for his PhD thesis sent him traveling the country negotiating with major companies to survey high-level managers. While writing it, he taught at Hunter College in New York. His marketing course was particularly popular, and the department chairman suggested that he chair a marketing sub-department. But the Vietnam War was killing tens of thousands of people a year, and Henry was involved in the New York peace movement. He decided that, as a southerner, he should bring the peace movement to his native region. With his wife, Sue, whom he married in 1966, he moved to Atlanta in March 1967 to create the Atlanta Workshop in Nonviolence. He counseled hundreds of young men about dealing with the draft and conscientious objection in the military. After his return to the Boston area, Henry was recruited by an old friend, Peter Schlaifer, to help finish a film on labor discontent at General Motors' Lordstown, Ohio, plant. It became Loose Bolts?, released in 1973. Ten other educational films on labor history and labor management followed. They were widely praised for their objectivity and for combining archival footage and modern interviews to let students feel what it was like to work in a steel or auto plant. Tom Kochan of MIT's Sloan School of Management commented about Henry's 2006 steel industry film, Rustbelt Phoenix, "Telling the story in the words of the people who made it happen brings to life the personal drama and the enormous stakes for the families and investors in ways that no words on paper could ever do." Henry also loved music, both classical and bluegrass. He was on the board of the new music group Boston Musica Viva for nearly 30 years. Henry leaves his wife of 56 years, Sue; and numerous nieces, nephews, and grand-nieces and nephews. He was born in Portumna, Ireland, and came to this country when 18, and worked as a reporter on the New York Express. Since that time he has always been engaged in newspaper work either as reporter, editor of correspondent. For 15 years he was the owner of a large fruit ranch in California, but during the time spent there continued his connections with numerous papers throughout this country and Europe. Bassett, one of the last of the old-time coasting masters, will be held at his home on Pearl street tomorrow at 2 P.M. He died at his home Saturday morning. He was a life member of the Boston Marine Society and was for 23 years collector of taxes for the town of Barnstable. He was born in Hyannis, a son of Capt. Gerry Bassett, a master mariner. He was one of the oldest members of Fraternal lodge, A.F.A.M. and a member of the First Baptist church. Surviving him are his widow, who was Miss Sallie Crowell; a son, J. P. H. | 1207 | Boston Herald, Massachusetts, Monday, November 29, 1915 Deaths J. Gardner Bassett Forty Years Teacher and Masters in Boston School (Special Dispatch to The Herald) BRIDGEWATER, Nov. 28 ? J. Gardner Bassett, aged 64 years, died today at his home on Summer street. Mr. Bassett became ill a week ago, rallied slightly after a surgical operation, and then suffered a relapse. Mr. Bassett was born here, the son of Josiah L. Bassett. He was graduated from the Bridgewater high and normal schools, and taught for several years in Fall River. In 1871 he went to the Bigelow grammar school in South Boston, and in 1896 was appointed master. He attracted attention in 1902 by abolishing the use of the rattan in the school and introduced a system of ?moral suasion.? He held South Boston school posts 40 years in all, retiring last January. Locally Mr. Bassett was noted for his many varied business and professional activities. He was a member of the school board for nine years. He was a trustee of Bridgewater academy and of the Bridgewater Cemetery Association. For several years he was the proprietor of the Pawnee House at Oak Bluffs, and he had interests in the Bridgewater Brick Company. He was a past master of Fellowship Lodge, A.F.& A.M. Alexander of Watertown. The bride?s father officiated at the wedding ceremony and also presented his daughter in marriage. A reception followed the ceremony it he church vestries. The bride wore a full, hoop-skirted gown of candleglow taffeta made with a cathedral train and yoked neckline. Her full length veil of illusion was caught to a coronet of orange blossoms which her mother had worn and she carried a white Bible with an orchid and lilies of the valley. Her sister, Marguerite Kennedy Bassett, was her only attendant, gowned in apple-green tissue taffeta and carrying a cascade of yellow roses to match her coronet. Donald R. She was born on Monday, May 28, 1956 to Dale Denver and Dorothy Elfreda Strother Wilhite in Crescent City, California. Debbie was a true believer and a child of God; her faith was strong and it never faltered once. She was a member of the Union Grove Church for over 35 years where she taught Sunday school, was the church secretary and treasurer for many years. Everyone enjoyed Sunday socials when Debbie would bring her big pot of Pinto Beans. Debbie loved her family and was proud of her children and grandchildren. She enjoyed going to yard sales, gardening, canning, working in her flower beds and her animals. Debbie was a loving wife, mother, sister, grandmother, aunt and friend and will be missed by all who knew her. She is preceded in death by her parents; her father in law, Roy Bass Jr. and her sister, Laura Wilhite. Survivors include her husband of 40 years, J.B. | 1213 | Brackett Funeral Home Charles Warren Ring Jr. April 2, 1936 ? October 24, 2015 Charles Warren Ring Jr. (?Johnny?) of Brunswick, Maine, died peacefully at home of cancer on Oct. 24, surrounded by family. He was born in Fall River, Mass., on April 2, 1936, the son of Charles Warren Ring and Constance Varney Ring. After many years of long summer visits, the family moved to ?Meadowsweet? on Adams Road in 1947. After attending public schools in Fall River and Brunswick, he graduated from the Taft School in Watertown, Conn., in 1955, where he set a handful of track records. He graduated from Hamilton College in Clinton, N.Y., Class of 1959. At Hamilton, he was a member of Theta Delta Chi Fraternity and sang with the Hamilton College Chorus and Chapel Choir. He and his first wife, the former Margaret (?Peggy?) Thomas, were married for 18 years. A Navy veteran, he attended the U.S.N. Officer Candidate School in Newport, R.I., and was stationed in Brunswick, where he was assigned to the Naval Air Station?s Administration Department. Following the Navy, he began an illustrious career in fundraising when he joined Bowdoin College in 1961 as a development officer. In the late-1970s, he became vice president for development and director of the Bowdoin College 175th Anniversary Campaign. He was a founder and administrator of Bowdoin?s Peary-MacMillan Arctic Museum and represented Bowdoin during the formation of the Public Radio Network, WCBB, with Bates and Colby colleges. While at Bowdoin, he attended the Institute for Educational Management course at the Harvard Business School in Cambridge, Mass. He was a member of the Council for the Advancement and Support of Education, having served as a member of the District One Executive Committee; the American Management Association; and the College and University Personnel Association. In 1950, as the second-youngest Eagle Scout in the country, he traveled to Washington, D.C., to meet President Harry S. Truman, Federal Bureau of Investigation Director J. Edgar Hoover and other government leaders, Senators, and Congressmen. He served as President of the Pine Tree Council, Boy Scouts of America, and later received the Silver Beaver Award in recognition of his outstanding service to the scouting movement. The Dining Hall/Conference Center at the Boy Scouts? ?Camp William Hinds? is named in Johnny?s honor. In addition, he served his community as president of the Board of Trustees of the Maine Maritime Museum in Bath; vice chairman of the Board of Directors, STAR Foundation in Portland; and as an officer and director of the Schooner Bowdoin Association. He was chairman of the Board of Selectmen of the Town of Brunswick from 1963 to 1967, during which he greeted President Lyndon B. Johnson at the Naval Air Station, Brunswick. His life was devoted to giving back to the community. He was active in numerous other community activities, including chair and founding member of the Town Commons Planning Committee, which has recently named a trail in his honor ?Johnny?s Trail,? as well as United Way campaigns, the Republican Town, County and State committees, and the Brunswick Rotary Club. He was director of development at North Yarmouth Academy in Yarmouth and vice president for development at St. Mary?s Regional Medical Center in Lewiston. He directed capital campaigns for other Maine institutions, including the Maine Maritime Academy in Castine; the Holocaust Human Rights Center in Augusta; the American Red Cross Mid Coast Chapter; the People?s Regional Opportunity Program in Portland; the Susan L. Curtis Foundation in Portland; the Victoria Mansion in Portland and Thomas College in Waterville. In 2005, he married Lorraine F. Desjardins. They enjoyed many close friends, boating, gardening, traveling and fine food, as well as spending time with their children and grandchildren of whom they are extremely proud. More recently, Johnny directed the Annual Fund Campaign for Brunswick?s Mid Coast Hospital. His leadership was recognized by the establishment of an ?Endowment Fund in Honor of Mr. & Mrs. C. Warren Ring, by their Colleagues and Friends.? In recognition of his decades of dedication to the Maine Maritime Museum, the 'Wyoming Alcove' of Sewall Hall will be named the 'C. Warren (Johnny) and Lorraine Ring Wyoming Gallery.? Johnny?s charm, sense of humor, generosity and zest for life will be missed by all of those he touched. He is survived by his beloved wife Lorraine, his sister Ruth Ring and husband James Harvie of Topsham; daughters Betsy Ring of Charlottesville, Va.; Connie Gregg and husband Jim of Lexington, Mass.; Molly Carpenter and husband David of Brunswick; son John Ring and wife Yu Fung of Taipei, Taiwan; niece Margaret Harvie Coon and husband Howard, and nephew John Harvie and husband Andrew Dunn; stepchildren Michelle Cote of Golden, Colo.; and Alex Cote of Topsham. He is survived by eight grandchildren: Nina and Aidan McKee; Emily and Chandler Gregg; Julia and Anna Carpenter; Hannah and William Ring, and was predeceased by an infant granddaughter, Elsie Carpenter. The family would like to thank Dr. Trudy Chase and her staff at Parkview Hospital, the many staff who cared for him at Mid Coast Hospital and the CHANS hospice team. | 1214 | Bradford-O?Keefe Funeral Home ? Ocean Springs ? 17 January 2024 Peggy Daniels Peggy Jo Bass Daniels, age 92, of Ocean Springs, passed away on Saturday, January 13, 2024. Peggy was born in Marion County on December 28, 1931. When she was ten, her family moved to Picayune and then to Poplarville six years later where she lived until moving to Ocean Springs to live with her daughter several years ago. Peggy married John Ross Daniels in 1950 and they remained married for 50 years until his death in 2001. She held numerous jobs in Poplarville, but the job she enjoyed the most was working as a deputy clerk in the Pearl River County Chancery Clerk?s office, which she did for 25 years until her retirement. She was a long-time member of First Baptist Church of Poplarville and enjoyed being part of the Harmony Sunday School Class. In addition to her husband, Peggy is preceded in death by her parents, Ronald Stephen (Mack) and Rozella Bass. Gladys was born on April 1, 1925 in Bay St. Louis. She graduated from St. Joseph?s Academy. Gladys was a daily communicant at St. James Catholic Church. Before moving to Gulfport in 2004, she was a resident of Pascagoula for 55 years, where she was a member of Our Lady of Victories Catholic Church and served in the Legion of Mary and Altar Society. She was a life member of American Legion Auxiliary Unit 160 of Pascagoula for more than 60 years. Gladys was State President of the Mississippi Auxiliary in 1987 and served on the organization?s National Committee for 7 years. She served as the State Representative of the Auxiliary on the VABS Advisory Board at the Biloxi VA Medical Center being recognized by the VA Director as an Outstanding Volunteer for more that 25 years of service for more than 10,000 hours. Gladys was a member of Salon 623 of the 8 and 40 for 55 years having served as Past State Chapeau. She retired in 1973 after 32 tears as a county Administrative Officer of a USDA Federal Farm Program in Jackson County. Gladys enjoyed the many years she spent in the company of her friends playing Canasta. Gladys was preceded in death by her husband, Clifton Lamar Bassett; parents, Henry Capdepon and Elizabeth Capdepon; sisters, Mae Higgins and Gloria Bolin; and brother, Henry Capdepon, Jr. Survivors include her nieces, Carol Josephs, Barbara Gay, Jeanne Welsh, Jan Hansen, and Bridget Damratoski; nephews, Henry Capdepon III, John Wesley Capdepon, and James Bolin; and 3rd and 4th generations of nieces and nephews. January 14, 2025 Lifelong Biloxian Michael Charles Bass, 77, finally rejoined with his deceased loved ones and Creator on Tuesday, January 14, 2025. Mike passed peacefully with his wife sitting by his side. Mike was preceded in death by his parents, Frank Paul and Aeoline Gabrich Bass; his brothers, Marion ?Nunu? Cruthirds, Frank ?Buddy? Bass; and numerous aunts, uncles, and cousins. He is survived by his wife Susie; his daughters, S. Clare Bass, CSJ, and Michele Mitchell (Brett); his grandchildren, Dylan, Elena, and Mia Mitchell; niece, Terri Cruthirds Goldsboro (Ricker); nephews, Derek Bass and Danny Bass (Julie); and niece, Ashley Bass. He graduated from Biloxi High School and attended the University of Mississippi in Oxford until he was called to serve his country. One of his proudest accomplishments was serving in the U.S. Army from 1969 until 1973. Mike served in the Army Airborne Infantry in the 1st Battalion/7th Cavalry. As a paratrooper during the Vietnam War he earned 2 Purple Hearts. Mike returned in 1973, with the Bronze Star, three Air Medals, the Combat Infantry Badge, and the Republic of Vietnam Gallantry Cross given for valor and heroic conduct while in combat with the enemy. After returning from Vietnam, Mike began his career with the U.S. Postal Service in New Orleans, LA. He eventually transferred to the Biloxi Post Office where he would go on to serve for 35 years as a letter carrier. He enjoyed getting to know the people on his various routes and many have commented that he was a ?bright spot? in their day. Mike met the love of his life, Susie, at his cousin Linda Bourgeois? house through her mother Vetsie Gabrich. Mike and Susie were married in May of 1982 and enjoyed 42 and a half years together. They had two daughters. Mike was thrilled when his oldest daughter Clare announced to the family that she had a vocation as a Catholic Sister. She is now a sister of St. Joseph of Carondelet living in Chicago, IL. The couple?s second daughter, Michele Mitchell is married to their favorite son-in-law Brett, and they have three children, Dylan, Elena, and Mia Mitchell. Mike adored his grandchildren and was proud to be their ?Poppy.? He also loved dogs and was a proud pet parent of Ms. Ippi, Missy, Chaps, and Saffy. Mike was a member of the American Croatian Lodge until illness prohibited him from driving. He was proud of his Croatian heritage as well as his Irish and Italian ancestries. Mike was an avid Notre Dame Football fan and followed the team his whole life. He was so excited to finally attend his first game in South Bend, Indiana, with his cousin Rudy Lesso and then a few years later attend another game there with his daughter Clare. One of Mike?s greatest accomplishments happened after a tropical storm clean up in the early 1990s. While working in the yard Mike put two old rakes together offsetting the tines and that made his raking at the time go quicker. He worked tirelessly for many years with his business partner in Japan to create and patent ?The Perfect Rake.? He was able to able to secure a patent for the rake and was able to make 5,000 rakes which were sold locally. In 1998, Mike and his family were chosen to attend the Morning Show on FX, a nationally syndicated show to demonstrate the ?Perfect Rake? in New York City. Mike proudly played Little League baseball in Biloxi and in 1961 the All-Star Biloxi team made it to the Norfolk, VA, regional Little League tournament. Even though they did not make it all the way to the Little League World Series finals in Williamsport, PA, Mike was always proud they got that far and that they met New York Yankee Star Joe Dimaggio while there. The family would like to especially thank the doctors, nurses, and staff of the Biloxi V.A. Hospital and the Community Living Center for the outstanding care and love that was given to Mike. Special thanks go to the nurses in the hematology lab, Dr. Gonzalez and his assistants Greg and Ann and most sincere thanks to team Niagara and Head Nurse Ashley in the Community Living Center, and to the chaplain Father Audet, Chaplain Thomas, and Chaplain Hoggatt. A Celebration of Life will be held Friday, January 24, 2025, at Nativity B.V.M Cathedral with visitation from 9:30 a.m-11:00 a.m. and a Funeral Mass at 11:00 a.m. Burial will follow immediately at the National Cemetery and a reception will be held at the American Croatian Cultural Center. She lived in Hamilton for the past 16 years, previously living in Kidder, Mo., and Byers, Colorado. Robin was born on July 22, 1956, in Leon, Iowa, to Donald Dean and Norma (Kelley) South. She attended college, worked in the student loan department at Graceland College in Lamoni, Iowa, and also worked in the past at the American Academy of Environmental Science in Colorado. Robin worked for many years and was a longtime employee in the sales department of F.C. Grace Furniture in Kidder until its closure. Robin was a daughter, sister, and mother, and she is survived by her parents; brothers-Floyd and David South, her son, Ira Paul Savely, and numerous nieces, nephews, and other loving family members. Robin married Richard L. Bassett in 2002 and he preceded her in death. She enjoyed a love for flowers, fishing, and being outdoors. Cremation has been entrusted to Bram Funeral Home. | 1220 | Brazosoprt Independent School District Judge Ogden Bass (Included Picture) Ogden Bass, a lifetime resident of Brazoria County was a graduate of the very first class of the then New Brazosport High School in 1952, where his leadership abilities blossomed as the FIRST Student Council President. He was also football team captain and was selected as 1st TEAM center ? All-District and 1st TEAM ALL-STATE. Bass went on to Texas A&M University, playing for renowned coach, Bear Bryant. After earning his degree, Ogden went on to earn his doctorate of Jurisprudence at The University of Texas School of Law. Bass also served as a member of the Texas National Guard, achieving the rank of captain. Bass's career as a lawyer kept him busy along with marrying his high school sweetheart and raising their family in Freeport. From serving as Brazoria County's district attorney for four consecutive terms, Ogden became Judge Ogden Bass when he was elected judge of the 300th Judicial District Court, serving three consecutive terms. During his outstanding tenure on the bench, Judge Bass was selected as Brazoria County Judge of the Year three times and went on to become the presiding district judge. This dedicated public servant's diverse legal background also included service as assistant attorney general of Texas, and the briefing attorney to the Texas Court of Criminal Appeals. Judge Bass has donated his talents and prodigious abilities to a wide range of professional organizations, including the Brazoria County Bar Association, Texas Bar Foundation, National District Attorney's Association, and the Texas Association for Court Administration. July 15, 2022 Marlys Bass, age 87, of Owatonna, passed away Friday, July 15, 2022 at Traditions II in Owatonna, with her family by her side. Marlys was born January 14, 1935 at home in Grafton township, Sibley County near Buffalo Lake, MN, the daughter of Ervin and LaVonne (Bryan) Leske. Marlys attended Buffalo Lake High School and graduated in 1952. Marlys worked at the Johnson Hardware Company in Hector, MN where she met her future husband, Lee. On May12, 1957 she married Lee Emerson Bass at Evangelical United Brethren Church in Buffalo Lake. Following their marriage, the couple lived in Milroy, Pemberton, and rural Ellendale before settling in Hope, MN. It was here they raised their five children. Marlys started doing daycare when her youngest child started kindergarten and continued for over 20 years. She also started working for Fair Lanes Bowling in the fall of 1976 and retired from South Park Bowling in 2010. Marlys was a member of the United Methodist Church of Ellendale. She enjoyed gardening, sewing, baking, and attending her children and grandkids sporting events. Many people hired her to make Christmas goodies for them. She always made cut-out cookies for each holiday/occasion and would make up individual trays for each grandchild. She always looked forward to the annual Hope Garage Sale where she spent days baking assorted goods to sell. Marlys is survived by four daughters: Kerry (Brian) Bice of Owatonna; Kayla (John) Pfeifer of Milwaukie, OR; Kristy (Charlie) Karsten of Owatonna; and Kim (Sal) Bass of Brooklyn Park, MN. She is also survived by 12 grandchildren; 31 great-grandchildren and 3 great-great grandchildren. Rennie (Excerpt) The Irish element in America?s national life has contributed much to the country?s material prosperity, being felt as a potential force along industrical, commercial and agricultural lines, to say nothing of the important place it occupies in the arts and sciences and its influence in religious and educational circle, and in the domain of politics. A fine representative of this nationality is found in James A. Rennie, of Kinmundy township, a successful farmer and estimable citizen, who to know is to respect. In his veins flows the blood of a long line of Irish ancestors, and it was in the fair Emerald Isle that he first saw the light of day. Since coming to the New World he has prospered, and while he stil loves his native land he is loyal to American institutions. James A. Rennie was born in Armagh, Ireland, September 20, 1838, the son of Thomas and Mary (Stratton) Rennie, whose family consisted of three children, namely; William J., James A., and Samuel. Thomas Rennie came to America in 1847, and settled in Rhode Island, later going to Boston, then to Providence, where he received employment. He was a machinist. He later moved to Arkwright and Hope, where he did all the machine work for the factories. In the year 1850 the fanily moved to Perry county, Indiana, and was engaged to work in the cotton mills of Cannelton. William, the oldest son, put up the first spindle frames in the mill where they were employes. Our subject received a fairly good common school education. He was married in 1866 to Mariah E. Falkumbarra, of Perry county, Indiana. She was the daughter of Littleton Falkunbarra, who married a Miss Shoemaker. To this union one child was born, Mariah E., who married M.F. Bass, daughter of Jacob and Nancy (Davis) Bass, and to his marriage three children were born, namely: Rosa, whose date of birth occurred in 1876; Gertrude R., who was born January 10, 1882, and who died October 2, 1898; Oscar R., who was born February 1, 890. Rosa married Charles Hannah, superintendent of the Salem box factory. Our subject?s war record is one that merits praise. He enlisted as a private, but was such a gallant soldier that he became sergreant and served as such throughout the war. He was in seventeen battles and skirmishes. He was in the Thirty-fifth Indiana Volunteer Infantry under John C. Walker of United States bond fame. He also served under Dick Ryan, of Indianapolis, Mayor Bolt, Colonel Mullen, son of Adjutant Mullin, who was shot at Dobbins Ford, Tennessee, under Van Cleve?s division. Thomas Rennie and his sons, William and James, all enlisted in the Union army from Perry county, Indiana, in 1861, for three years? time. William was wounded in a skirmish during the first of the war, having had his lim broken in two places. Thomas R., father of our subject, died from exposure in 1872. He reached an old age. Lieutenant Canoe states that James A. Rennie was as brave a man as ever followed the American flag. Mr. Rennis is the owner of a very valuable and highly productive farm of forty acres in section 30, township 4, range 3. He is a good farmer and makes his place yield a comfortable income from year to year. His fields are well tilled and in excellent condition. He has a comfortable and substantial residence and a good barn, and other out buildings. Our subject has been interested in educational movements and has very ably filled the office of School Director for the past twenty-five years. Politically he is a stanch Republican, and he cast his first vote for Abraham Lincoln, and has voted for every Republican President since then. He draws twelve dollars per month pension, under the affidavit of his discharge. In religion he is a Universalist, and adheres closely to this beautiful faith, however, he has never made prefession of any religious faith. He practices the motto, ?Do right all men, because it is right,? this being he substance of his creed. He was seventy years old September 30, 1908, and is hale and hearty enjoying in a large measure life , his home and many friends. Bass Mr. Bass is eminently worthy of representation in a volume of the province of the one at hand owing to the life of industry and honesty which he has lived and the work he has done in up building the county of Marion since coming here. Reuben J. Bass was born October 7, 1845, in Trousdale county, Tennessee, the son of John D. and Betsey (Saterfield) Bass, both natives of Wilson county, Tennessee, where they grew up and married, the subjects? mother having passed to her rest in 1852. His father married a second time, his last wife being a widow, Annie Purdy, of Wilson county, Tennessee. They moved to Smith county and later to Trousdale county, that state. He died at the age of seventy-five years and his second wife died in that county. The subject?s father was always a farmer and a Democrat. He and his wife were member of the Primitive Baptist church. He had five children by his first wife, namely: Reuben J., our subject; John E., who is now deceased, lived in Kentucky; Mollie, who married James Holt, resides in St. Louis; Elizabeth, who married W.L. Puryear, is deceased; Daniel, who lived in Trousdale county, Tennessee, is deceased. The following children were born to the subject?s father by his second wife: Shelby, who lives in Wilson county, Tennessee; Maranda, who lives in Trousdale county, Tennessee; Linnie is deceased; Sion D. lived in Macon county, Tennessee, is deceased; Sidney lived in Wilson county, Tennessee; Edward lives in Toursdale county, Tennessee; Lucy, who was the fourth child in order of birth, lives in Nashville, Tennessee. The subject of this sketch had only a limited chance to attend school. However, he gained some education in subscription schools. He was married April 26, 1868, to Annie Gaddy, a native os Smith county, Tennessee, the daughter of George and Leacy (Bass) Gaddy, the former a native of Smith county and the latter of Wilson county, Tennessee. In the fifties Mr. Gaddy came to Williamson county, Illinois, and got wild land and made a home on the same where he died. His wife died in Tennessee. Four children were born to the subject and wife as follows: Mollie, deceased; Learner D. lives at Walnut Hill, this county, having married Marvin West, a farmer; Lulu is deceased; Forence is the wife of A.T. Harmon, a farmer in Raccoon township, and the mother of these children, Poal, Ruby, Anna P., Beatr4ice and John D. After his marriage our subject located I Marion, Williamson county, Illinois, living there for two years when he went back to Trousdale county, Tenneessee, and on December 19, 1881, he came to Marion county, locating in Raccoon township, having rented land until 1888, when he bought sixty acres in section 28, where he now lives. It was formerly known as the Willis place. The subject has prospered since coming here, being a hard worker and a good manager. He has made many extensive improvements and carried on a general farming business. He raises hogs, horses and cattle. He also raises a great deal of fruit of all kinds. He is a modern farmer in every sense of the word and has one of the best farms in the township. He has devoted his life work to farming. He is a Democrat in politics and in religion a Free Will Baptist. He is a member of the Farmers? Educational Co-Operative Union of Raccoon township. He was born in Elkhart, February 22, 1853, son of Mr. and Mrs. Daniel Bassett who came to this country from England, he was 63 years, 8 months and 9 days old. Surviving him is his wife Sarah L. She was born in Lebanon, Va., and had lived most of her life in Bristol. She was preceded in death by her parents, John and Viola Hughes Bass of Bristol, Va.;and her brother, Kenneth Bass of Salt Lake City, Utah. She was a member of Abingdon United Methodist Church where she played the piano and organ and directed the bell choir for over 15 years. She was in much demand as a concert pianist and played for many events, soloists, weddings and funerals. She was a graduate of V.I. College with a degree in music and was presented a doctor of music degree by Emmanuel Baptist Seminary of Shelby, North Carolina. For many years, she managed her own business, Frieda's Eel Skins, and worked along side her husband in the family businesses. She is survived by her husband of 55 years, Dr. Bobby F. | 1230 | Brooklyn Eagle, New York, Friday, 28 September 1888 Obituary John Elias Bass John Elias Bass, of this city, died on Monday, September 24, at 4 P.M. in Denver, Col., whither he had gone about eight weeks since to recuperate his failing health. He was the last of six adult children of the family of the Rev. Job G. Bass. Young Mr. Bass served his country during the late Civil War, holding a position as a non commissioned officer in Company F., First new York Lincoln Cavalry. His circle of acquaintances in this city was a large one, and they, with the many friends of his father, will be pained to learn of his sudden death. Although Mr. Bass died and was buried among strangers, the officers of the Y.M.C.A. of Denver showed him great courtesy, ministering to him in his short illness, and carefully carrying out his father?s wishes respecting his burial in that city. Mr. Bass was 40 years of age, and unmarried. It was only in march last that another son of the Rev. Mr. Bass passed away, and the sympathy of all Christian people goes out to him in this added bereavement. Mighty Casey Baseball John Bass Born in Charleston, South Carolina to Jacob (Job) Gardiner Bass and Ellen Rachel (Ruth) Garden a preacher and his wife, John Elias Bass eventually moved with his family to Brooklyn where he learned the game as it was growing in his city after the Great War for Slavery. (Bass served in that war as a non-commissioned member of the New York Cavalry.) After playing with the Unions of Morrisania, Bass played shortstop for the Cleveland Forest City team in that first National Association season of 1871, He would lead the Association in triples (10 ? in just 22 games) and tied for the team league in homers with 3 (the league leader had four). The next year he was with his hometown Brooklyn Atlantics but only for a couple of games while Jack McDonald ran afoul of the team leadership. He played with amateur clubs for the next several years, but he got one last ?major league? game as an emergency player for the Hartfords of Brooklyn against Louisville in 1877. Tom York came up ill; Bass suited up and played in left field getting a hit in four tries and scoring a run. Bass worked as a clerk but appeared to be active in some of the same events that his father was involved with ? namely the church and military reunions ? until he fell ill with tuberculosis. He left Brooklyn for Denver in hopes of staving off the disease, but that failed and within weeks he had died there. Depending on which source you believe, he was anywhere from 37 to 40 years old. Born on February 9, 1955, in Washington County Maryland, he was the son of the late Earnest William and Mabel May (Giffin) Bass. Eugene, also known by Gene or Geno to friends, was a 1974 graduate of Bladensburg High School. He was a member of the Bladensburg Volunteer Fire Department for many years and was extremely passionate about the department. Gene received an award in April 1989 for his bravery and selfless acts to save individuals from a burning vehicle. Gene?s favorite jobs in his lifetime were being a limo driver for Detailed Destinations and working at Bear?s Repair as a mechanic and later in the office. Gene will forever be known for his bold and unforgettable personality. He loved racing Slot Cars, watching NASCAR, and watching area high school sporting events. He always cheered on the kids in his life in their sporting events or academic achievements. Gene also enjoyed visiting different railroads with his wife Mary and taking various train rides with her. They also loved going for car rides and visiting the ocean together. | 1233 | Brown-Wynne Funeral Home Will Bass August 21, 1931 ? January 15, 2026 Wilben Crawford ?Will? Bass peacefully passed into the next life on January 15, 2026. Will was born in Rosewood, NC, to V.N. and Smithie Bass, the youngest of nine children. After graduating from Goldsboro High School, he went to East Carolina and graduated in 1954 with a degree in Industrial Arts Education. He taught for a year in Hopewell, VA, before being drafted into the Army. Even in the Army, he was a teacher, serving in the Education Center in the Army base in Bamberg, Germany, in 1956 and 1957. A chance encounter with a young woman named Betty Mills on the bus line from Raleigh to Goldsboro and Wilmington led to a lifelong love between the two of them. They were married in 1958 and settled in Raleigh. Within a couple of years, they had moved into their home on Shelley Road, and he was teaching Industrial Arts at Martin Junior High. They became parents in 1961 with the birth of David, and their family grew again in 1964 when Paul was born. When Will decided he wanted to get out of teaching in the early 1970s, he went to night classes and summer school at UNC-Chapel Hill to get his Master's of Education degree. He then went to work for the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction as a Title 1 administrator until his retirement in 1987. Will viewed his retirement as a time to become more active with the things that interested him the most. He and Betty traveled in the US, Canada, and Europe, and he continued to travel after her death - sometimes with friends, sometimes with family, and sometimes solo. He became intrigued with creating with Plexiglas and other acrylic materials - everything from bird feeders to nameplates to wildlife carvings, starting a hobby that turned into a craft business. He was deeply interested in photography, capturing scenes from his travels, birds in the backyard, and flowers wherever he found them, especially at the Raulston Arboretum. A charter member of North Raleigh United Methodist Church, he remained an active member of the church for the rest of his life, serving on countless committees, helping to found the JOY seniors group, taking photographs of church events, and being a faithful participant in worship and Sunday School. But more important than what he did was the way he lived. Although aphasia hindered his speech for his final years, his mind and memory remained sharp, and his spirit of curiosity and creativity never wavered. He treated everyone he met with kindness, empathy, and respect, no matter who they were or what their station in life. He found a way to make a connection and find some common ground with everyone, and greeted everyone with a smile and an open heart. He was always encouraging and would lovingly support you as you found your own path through life, rather than trying to impose his idea of what your path should be. He truly made the world a kinder and better place each day. Will is survived by his son David and wife Julie of Raleigh, son Paul and his wife Lyn of Newcastle, Maine; his grandchildren Drew (and wife Tori), Allison (and husband Gary), and Tally, his great-grandchildren Jack and Ruby, many nieces, nephews, and extended family, and the many friends he made throughout his life. Special thanks to the staff at Magnolia Glen, who loved and cared for him while he was a resident, and to the doctors, nurses, and staff at Rex Hospital, who always provided compassionate care for him during each of his visits. He was born March 12, 1933 in Black Creek NC to Mary Hazel (Jeter) Bass and James Albert Bass. Raised in Wilson, he came to Raleigh in 1951 to study engineering at State College. He was a member of Phi Kappa Tau fraternity. He served in the US Air Force for two years and as he described it, the best outcome from his time in the service was meeting the love of his life, Sondra Golden. They were married for 62 years until her death in 2019. After graduating with a degree in Mechanical Engineering from North Carolina State University, Al and Sandy moved several times before settling back in Raleigh. He and two other young engineers joined together and formed Bass, Nixon & Kennedy, Inc Consulting Engineers in 1969. They enjoyed years of success as a result of growth across the state of NC. Al was honored as a Fellow of the Professional Engineers of NC. He served on the NC Board of Registration for Engineers and Land Surveyors, the NC Building Code Council, was a past master of Raleigh Lodge 500, and served on the vestry of Church of the Good Shepherd. He mentored several young engineers over his career, and even into his retirement. A self-described train buff, he was a founding member of the National Railway Historical Society, East Carolina Chapter (now known as New Hope Valley Railway). Another interest, which he called a fascinating waste of time, was genealogy. Pre-internet, he authored The Bass Family of Black Creek NC, which can be found in several libraries in Eastern NC. As a result of his research, he became a member of First Families of NC and Order of Descendants Ancient Planters in VA. Left to cherish his memory are his daughters Susan Bass (Jeanne), Lee Ann Shearon (Patrick), and granddaughters Audrey, Rachel and Natalie. He was predeceased by his son, Benji and wife, Sandy. The family wishes to express deep gratitude to his special caregiver Gloria Roberts and all the loving ladies who were so attentive to him in his final years. L.A. dedicated his life to his loved ones, serving as a devoted husband, a caring father, and a cherished grandfather. He married his high school sweetheart, Marilyn Seburn, and together they shared a remarkable journey of love and companionship that spanned 67 years, including 60 wonderful years of marriage. Interment will follow with Military Honors by United States Air Force, Dyess Air Force Base Honor Guard. Services are under the direction and care of Henderson Funeral Home of Coleman. Dean was born April 8, 1936 in Killeen, Texas to Richard Dick and Rosa Mae Griffin Bass. He was raised in Santa Anna graduating from Santa Anna High School in 1954 and then received a Bachelor of Education from Howard Payne University, walking across the stage the same day as his son Richard. He received his Masters of Education from Tarleton State University. He was baptized as a youth on the same day as his father and is currently a member of the Taylor?s Valley Baptist Church of Temple, Texas. Dean is a 50 year member of the Masonic Mountain Lodge #661, Scottish Rite Mason 32nd Degree and York Rite Mason. At the age of 17 he enlisted in Texas National Guard in Tank Company 147 Regiment, 36th Division. His mother had to sign for him to join. On January 4, 1955 Dean enlisted in the United States Air Force serving his country until retirement in November, 1975 at the rank of Master Sergeant. He held 2 jobs while serving: communications for most of his career and later was an instructor of Air Training Command. He was stationed in Germany at Hahn Air Force Base from 1959-1962, Sembach Air Force Base from 1966-1969. He was deployed to Vietnam in 1970. On June 1, 1982 he married the love of his life Suzanne Renegar in San Antonio, Texas at Fort Sam Houston Post Chapel chosen because both their fathers had been stationed at Ft Sam. They celebrated 35 years of marriage with Susie preceding him in death in 2017. He enjoyed writing stories and sharing them with others. He loved to travel and especially loved Bavaria, Germany. He also collected Southwestern art and artifacts. After retiring from the military, he worked as a teacher and coach in several Texas school districts. His last civilian job was Superintendent of Schools, for Santa Anna Independent School District. He was a track and field official for Texas Relays and officiated college track and field events all over the country. He was voted the outstanding lineman and MVP of his team in the German Sports District when he played for Hahn Air Force Base in Germany. His team played against other military bases in Germany. He had 23 unassisted Tackles in one game. He played 14 total years of football counting jr. high, high school and in the military. In 1956 he played softball for Lackland Air Force Base and his team won the base championship. October 27, 2021 Mary Christine McIntosh Bassett was born in Mexia, Texas on December 13, 1927. She left this world to join the God she loved on October 27, 2021, at home and surrounded by family. There will be a memorial service at 2 PM on December 19, at Peace Lutheran Church. Mary was the daughter of John Gordon and Mary Carlton McIntosh. She grew up in Mexia, Corpus Christi, and Austin Texas with frequent trips to Fort Davis where many of her Carlton relatives lived. She graduated from Austin High School in 1945 and the University of Texas in 1949 with a degree in Home Economics. While in Austin, she met the love of her life, James Wilbur "Jim" Bassett. They were both active in the youth group at First Southern Presbyterian Church and met many lifetime friends there. Mary and Jim were married on October 21, 1949 at First Southern Presbyterian Church in Austin. Jim's career as an agriculture expert led them to live in a wide range of locations early in their married life. They lived in Mena, Arkansas for a year before moving to Laramie, Wyoming. James Jr. was born in Wyoming and Jim's pursuit of his master's degree led the family to Bozeman, Montana in the middle of a blizzard when Jamie was a couple of weeks old. While Jim completed his master's degree and worked in the wool department at Montana State College, Mary put her expertise with young children to practice as the couple added five more children to the family. After many years of long car trips to visit family in Texas, the family returned to Texas in 1962. Jim finished work on his PhD at Texas A&M and accepted a permanent position with Texas A&M University in 1963. The family bought a wonderful house directly across from the campus and made memories in that house for the next 50 years. In 1964, Mary was one of the pioneers of the St. Thomas Episcopal Church's preschool program with Mary Oxley and her dear friend Peggy Shafer. The program still thrives over 50 years later. Mary moved on to start the A&M Presbyterian preschool and was a beloved kindergarten teacher there for many years. Along with her preschool experiences, Mary went back to college for a Master's degree and taught early childhood education and development courses at Texas A&M for several years. When her children were all finally finished with schooling she returned to education and got a Master's degree in counseling with a focus on working with families and young children at A&M. She used her education and training as a licensed, professional counselor at The Answer in Bryan for many years, followed by a long practice from her home. Mary and Jim were longtime members of A&M Presbyterian Church, and later became charter members of Peace Lutheran Church. They also loved to attend First Presbyterian Church in Fort Davis on their regular travels to West Texas. Mary loved to travel. She and Jim went to England and Scotland, Germany, Poland, Canada, and many other places. Her entire life was punctuated by very frequent trips to their beloved Fort Davis, Texas, where the family still has a permanent homestead. Mary has donated her body to the Texas A&M College of Medicine Medical School for use in education and research. Mary is preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Jim; her sister, Jane "Tia" Van Auken; and her dear grandson, Joshua Lee Tackett. Shannon was born and raised in Vinita, where she built a life centered around family, hard work, and love. Growing up, Shannon was actively involved in 4-H, FFA, basketball, and local rodeo organizations. Her competitive spirit, leadership, and love for agriculture and rodeo began at an early age and continued throughout her life. Those experiences shaped her strong work ethic and her dedication to helping others succeed. She was the proud owner of RGS, a company that became her second home. Shannon poured her heart into her work and cared deeply for every employee, treating each one as family. She encouraged others to chase their dreams and was always there to lend a helping hand. When she wasn't working, Shannon could be found cheering on her kids and grandsons at rodeos, volunteering for the Will Rogers Memorial Rodeo, or serving with the Daughters of the American Revolution. From there the different branches scattered; Our subject being a descendant of a family which located in Connecticut, where for 150 years the old farm in Windham County has been owned by some one of the Bass name. Edwin Bass, Sr. was born in Windham, Windham Co., Conn., January 28, 1816. His father Ebenezer Bass was born July 4, 1784, and died February 28, 1875. His wife, Sarah McCurdy, was a native of Nova Scotia, born May 9, 1789, and died September 24, 1850. In early life she removed to Connecticut and was there married. They were the parents of seven sons and five daughters, all of whom are living except two sons and two daughters, but are scattered through Missouri, Kansas, Connecticut and Illinois. Edwin Bass was reared on a farm and educated in the common schools of his native State, afterward teaching several terms. At the age of twenty-one he began working by the month and in three years saved $400. April 13, 1840, he started for this county, and after three weeks on the way, by the Ohio, Mississippi and Illinois Rivers, he landed at Hennepin. He then invested the reminder of his $400 in ninety acres of land in Berlin Township, and for three years worked by the month, teaching school, etc. April 27, 1843, he was married to Emeline J. Stanard, born May 6, 1824, in Madison County, N. Y. She is the daughter of Lebins and Luceba (Fay) Stanard. The father was a native of Vermont, near Montpelier, the mother of Connecticut. They came to the county in the fall of 1840, and lived in Lamoille for some time. Mr. Stanard died in Clarion Township in October, 1858, and his wife died January 3, 1842. Mr. and Mrs. Bass are the parents of eleven children, six of whom are living: Caroline L., born August 28, 1844, died February 6, 1873, wife of Thomas L. Phillips; Lucian, born March 26, 1847, lives in Walnut Township, Bureau County(he was in the Civil war for one year); Luther G., born July 25, 1848, is a physician in Roseland, Ill.; Sidney B., born March 18, 1850, died October 26, 1853; Oscar S., born May 19, 1854, an attorney by profession; Edwin, Jr., born April 23, 1856, a farmer in Berlin Township; Heber and Howard, born February 15, 1858 (Howard died September 15, 1858, Heber died September 25, 1858); Wallace, born March 12, 1860, a farmer in Lee County, Ill.; Alonzo C., April 12, 1862. After marriage Mr. Bass remained on the farm he first bought until February, 1851, when he came to his present farm in the corporation of Malden. Mr. Bass has been successful in his business career, and now owns as the result of his labor 1, 432 acres of land in this and Lee Counties, besides other property. Casper ? 25 June 2024 James Raymond Bassett James Raymond (Jim) Bassett, 84, of Casper, WY took a leisurely evening ride on his motorcycle June 24, 2024 with no destination in mind. When he met a deer, it turned out to be his golden road home and he arrived, early in the morning of the 25th, at the feet of Jesus. A celebration of Jim's life will be held Sunday, June 30th, 4pm at Casper First Church of the Nazarene, 2020 S. Jefferson. Jim was born May 5, 1940 in Torrington, WY to Hal and Lorraine (Walker) Bassett. He was born between his older sister Halene (Dinnel) and younger sister Sherrill (Wagner). He graduated from Torrington High School in 1958 and married Elizabeth "Betty" Peters in November of 1959. They welcomed their first daughter in 1960 and she was followed closely by their first son in 1961, a son in 1963, another son in 1964, and again a son in 1969. Finally, in 1976, Jim got his wish to have a second daughter. He was very proud of all of his children and supported them mightily in all of their endeavors. Jim opened Mountain Surveying in 1976. Running his own land surveying business ended up being a passion and a dream come true. He became a life long surveyor, doing his continuing education and keeping his license clear up to his death. Jim loved motorcycles. So much so that the number he owned throughout his life is unknown by his family. Daily rides in good weather were a part of life, even in winter. Jim loved tractors and was an avid collector of both life size and toys. Another part of his many eclectic collections were a number of firearms both antique and new. Jim was well loved and respected by the community and his church family. Throughout his years in church he was a board member and teen leader. He took the teens on many outdoor adventures from long bike rides and river floats to backpack trips to remote and beautiful places. He will be truly missed everyday. Jim is survived by his six children, Sonya (Tracy) Wolff of Casper, Perry (Sharon) Bassett of Colorado Springs, Michael Bassett of Evansville, Kendall (Brigat) Bassett of Evansville, Cary (Jodie) Bassett of Blue Springs, MO, and Tiffany (Terry) Clabaugh of Casper, his older sister Halene Dinnel of Casper, his younger sister Sherrill (Bill) Wagner of Gilbert, AZ, 8 grandchildren, 7 step-grandchildren, 8 great grandchildren, 18 step-great grand children, many nieces and nephews, and numerous "adopted" grandchildren in his church family, some who called him "Papa Jim". January 18, 2014 Steve Bassett, age 75 of Bolivar, Missouri departed this life on Saturday, January 18, 2014 at his home in Bolivar. He was born in Council Bluffs, Iowa. He was born Cecil Glen Blackman Jr. His biological parents were: Cecil Glen Blackman & Viola Bartlett Blackman. He had two biological siblings: Joyce Estella Blackman & Kenny Leroy Blackman. He was united with his sister Joyce at his high school graduation. They were close until her death on Jan 9, 1982. It has always bother Steve that he was unable to locate his younger brother Kenny. He finally accepted the fact that he did not realize he was adopted as he was only four years old. They were both adopted from the Annie Wittenmyer Orphanage in Davenport, Ia. in May 1947. Steve was raised on the East side of the state of Iowa. Kenny is believed to have been raised on the West side of the state of Iowa around Sioux City. Steve?s adoptive parents were: Theodore W & Mabel Bassett. He spent his whole life serving the Lord through his gospel music; He was saved at a Billy Graham Concert at the age of 8 years old. Steve graduated from Edgewood High School, Edgewood, Iowa on May 16, 1957. He was always proud that his diploma was presented to him by his father who was president of the school board. He was secretary of his high school senior class. Steve was in the Jr ROTC in high school for the Navy. Upon graduation from high school he was accepted into the Air Force. He used to say for one day he was in two branches of the service. Steve served his county from 1957 until 1967. He was stationed in Coos Bay, Oregon. He was a navigator flying many missions. His nickname "Steve" came during his time in the Air Force. He always wore a white scarf around his neck which simulated a character in the comics, Steve Canyon. At first they called him Capt. Canyon and later that was dropped and it became "Steve". Steve then spent 20 years as a coast to coast truck driver. Next Steve attended college in Colorado for law enforcement. He then worked on the Governor?s Law Enforcement Task Force. He had to retire from this in 1992 due to the onset of glaucoma. He then came to Missouri to pursue his career with his gospel singing. He followed Billy Graham and worked with him bringing special music to his services. He also did nursing home ministries and sang at other functions all his life. When it made it to Branson he sang with Barbara Fairchild and then the Blackwood Brothers. He soon found out he preferred to sing as a soloist. He then moved on to the travel business which he had a partner. He and his best friend, Russ had tours to many places including Branson and the Holy Land. His dream was to take Sue to the Holy Land before he passed. We did not make it though. He met Sue (the love of his life) in the winter of 2004. They immediately were drawn together after just a few months. She told him their meeting was ?Divine Intervention?. She later told him her last name was Divine. He then decided she was the one for him as he wanted someone with a sense of humor. Hobbies: Bass vocalist, pianist, travel, fishing, cooking, family and friends. He enjoyed cutting his own gospel music album in 1991. He is survived by his wife; Sue Bassett of the home, step sons; Russell Divine and his wife LaDon and Danny Divine, a step daughter; Kim Williams and her husband Jeff, 5 step grandchildren; McKenzi Divine, Skylar Divine, Cassidy Williams, Wyatt Williams and Weston Williams all of Hartville, Missouri, and one brother; Sheldon Bassett of Wheaton, Illinois, Aunt; Alice Coles of Wichita, Ks, special cousins; Patricia Woolf of Wichita, Ks and Cathy Hart of Stanton, Ia.
