1851	KPCNews, November 23, 2016 H. Robert Knott (Picture included) AUBURN ? H. Robert "Bob" Knott, 87, died Monday, Nov. 21, 2016, at his home in Auburn. He was born Jan. 22, 1929, in Auburn to Harry and Mildred (Bassett) Knott. He was a veteran of the United States Air Force serving during the Korean Conflict from 1950?1953. He married Marjorie Brown on Oct. 16, 1954, in Angola, and she survives in Auburn. Mr. Knott worked as a crew dispatcher for the New York Central Railroad, the Pennsylvania Railroad, and then for Penn Central Railroad before retiring in 1989 after more than 33 years of service. He was a member of the American Legion, Ashley Masonic Lodge 614, Fort Wayne Scottish Rite and the Fort Wayne Mizpah Shrine. Also surviving are a daughter, Vickie (Tom) Laughlin of Hurst, Texas; two sons, Bob (Brenda) Knott of Waterloo and Mark (Becki) Knott of Auburn; nine grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; and a brother, Jim Knott of Port Charlotte, Florida. He was preceded in death by his parents; a daughter, Pamela Knott; and a sister, Grace Forney. Services will be 11 a.m. Monday at Feller and Clark Funeral Home, 1860 Center St., Auburn, with calling from 10-11 a.m. Monday prior to the service. The Rev. Ralph Diehl will officiate Burial will take place in Woodlawn Cemetery with military honors being conducted by the United States Air Force and American Legion Post 178 of Garett. 1853	L. Harold Poole Funeral Service and Crematory Francis ?Frank? Peter Bassett October 9, 1961 ? April 17, 2025 Francis (Frank) Peter Bassett, age 63, passed away peacefully on April 17, 2025. Born on October 9, 1961, in Boston, Massachusetts, to the late Walter Raymond Bassett and Elizabeth Rose Smyth Bassett. Frank lived a full life of love and dedication together with his wife of 23 years, Lori Allen Bassett. Frank is survived by his son Joshua (Josh) Brunza (April Brunza and granddaughter Sadie Brunza); his sisters Carol Bassett Cloer (Allen Cloer) and Janet Tighe. He is also survived by his in-laws Huey and Ruth Allen, Barry Allen (Sheila McLamb Underwood) and Kellie McDowell Rhodes (Steve Lepkowski). In addition, he leaves behind his nieces and nephews: Dr. Danielle Tighe, David Nash-Pappas (Margaret Nash-Pappas), Ben Pappas, Tiffany Tighe Stump (Paige Stump), Dr. Olivia Tighe Bauer (Chandler Bauer), Shannon Tighe, and Caleb Rhodes. He will be remembered for the way he lived life, his kindness, generosity, and unwavering commitment to his family and friends. In addition to his parents, Frank was preceded in death by his nephew Timothy Tighe and brothers-in-law Dennis McDowell and Joseph Rhodes. Frank enjoyed life. He loved spending time with his friends and family travelling, attending concerts, golfing, playing poker, boating, putting together puzzles and playing games, spending time in "The Basshole" or on his deck listening to music. He lived by the quote from Aristotle, "We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence, then, is not an act, but a habit." He lived this quote through his work and his personal life. His occupation in customer care would lead people to believe it was because of his work. However, he was great at his work because of the way he lived his life and treated people. He touched countless lives with his warmth, empathy, and compassion for others. He will be deeply missed by all who know him, but most of all by the love of his life and soulmate Lori. Bassett 64, also known as ?Kempee? or ?Humble Howard? of Osceola, NY passed away unexpectedly Monday March 29, 2021 at Oneida HealthCare Center after a brief illness. He was born Dec 08, 1956 in Hamilton, NY a son of Clinton & Bernice Tallman Bassett and was a graduate of Madison Central School. For the past 25 years he had been an operator with Barrett Paving Materials. Previously he had owned and operated H. Bassett Trucking, Madison, NY and had previously worked for Bus Industries, Town of Osceola and JK Tobin Construction among others. He was a devoted member of the S.A.L. Kelley-Phillips American Legion Post #569, Oriskany Falls, NY. Howard enjoyed riding his Harley, working on automotive repair and loved people. He especially enjoyed having a beer and ?Better Vision? with his friends. In 1992, he married the former Ramona 'Mona' Currier in Madison, NY. They have lived in Osceola since 1993. Surviving besides his wife, Ramona are six sisters, Sandy & Len Sonia, Linda & Ben Butler, Cindy & Ike Kerr, Tina & Jim Eisenhut, Tammy Jasek, Lori & Gene Massey, three brothers, Dick & Sharon Bassett, Bobby Bassett and Tom & Dorothy Bassett and several nieces & nephews. 1856	LaGrange Pioneers George Eelbeck, 1935 George Eelbeck was born in Yorkshire, England, in 1816. He married Mary Frindall in 1848. They came to Wisconsin in 1855, and settled in the southeast conrer of Section 24 of LaGrange, having land also in Troy, where stood the house. They used to walk to LaGrange Center taking eggs and butter to exchange for groceries which had to be carried back. Their four children were: Annie (Mrs. Bassett) of Bloomer, Wisconsin, Eliza (Mrs. Coman) deceased, Sarah (Mrs. George King) deceased, Charles who married Emma Edwards, now deceased; Elbert, their only child, lives with his father on the old homestead. He was the son of the late Allison Darrell and LaVaughn Croft Bass. He was preceded in death by one brother Danny Bass. he was of the Pentecostal faith. He had made Lake City his home for the past thirty-five years after moving here from Jacksonville, FL. he enjoyed fishing, camping, and woodworking. 1858	Lake City Reporter, November 28, 2015 Violet Bassett Ms. Violet Bassett, 90, of Lake City, passed away on Wednesday November 25, 2015 at the Shands at University of Florida Cancer Center after an extended illness. She was born in Pensacola, FL, on October 13, 1925. She has lived in the Lake City area since the 1960¹s, moving here with her husband who retired from the military. She was a homemaker who loved her family and never met a stranger; she loved to sit on the wooden bench out by the nurse's station at Willowbrook and greet the residents and visitors as they came and went. She is preceded in death by her loving husband Lester M. Bassett. She is survived by her children: Voncile (Otto) Pursifull of Lake City, Rose Parnell of Lake City, Violet Sutton of Pensacola, Lester P. Bassett of Lake City, Samuel (Shelia) Bassett of Starke, Kenneth (Darlena) Bassett of Lake City, David (Denise) Bassett of Lake City, Roger (Trish) Bassett of South Carolina and Michael (Tina) Bassett of Jacksonville. 1859	Lake Funeral Home ? Saranac ? 8 April 2024 Darwin Duane Bassett Darwin Duane Bassett passed away April 5, 2024. He was born in Nashville, MI on June 30, 1954 to the late Richard and Ellen Bassett. He graduated from Maple Valley High School, class of 1972. Darwin grew up on a farm with his four siblings; David, Dennis, Doug and Dawn Bassett. There he gained an appreciation of nature and poured himself into the labor of working on the family farm. After leaving the farm, he worked in numerous industries before attempting to become an entrepreneur, starting his own chimney sweeping and home repair consulting business that he continued until his retirement. Darwin met his wife Sharon in 1978 and later married August 30, 1980. Darwin and Sharon have three beautiful children, Eric (Wife-Danielle, children- Grayson, Bennett, Oliver and Nathaniel), Nicholas Bassett (wife- Anne, children- Theadore and Evelyn) and Jessica Lindner (Husband- Dennis, children - Joseph, Noa Mae, and child expected Oct '24). Darwin enjoyed sharing his interests and spending time with his family. Darwin loved to play basketball with his daughter Jessica, working on electronics projects with Nick, building rockets with Eric, and volunteering as a self-defense instructor for 15+ years. He loved to attend rock concerts with his nephew Mike and enjoyed spending family time at summer BBQs near his hometown. Darwin devoted his life to his children's success and will be missed. He was preceded in death by his parents, Ellen and Richard Bassett, Father-in law Bernie McWilliams, brother-in-law Dennis (Nancy) McWilliams, and sister-in-law Betty Bassett. He is survived by his wife Sharon Bassett and his three children Eric (Danielle), Nicholas (Annie), Jessica (Dennis), His siblings David, Dennis (Mary), Doug and Dawn Bassett, and mother-in-law Mary Jane McWilliams, Sue (Bob) Krygier, Kathy (Tom) Wachter, Rose (Jack) Klein. "Wayne" Bass, 52, of Lake Placid died Sunday morning, Dec. 4, 2011, in Florida Hospital Heartland Medical Center. A lifelong resident of Lake Placid, he was born in Arcadia on April 15, 1959, the son of Lillian and R.C. Bass. Wayne drove truck for many years and was an accomplished mechanic who enjoyed tinkering with engines of all kinds. Mr. Bass is survived by a son, Preston Wayne Bass (Liz) of Lake Placid; mother and stepfather, Lillian and Irving Hartsfield; siblings, Raymond Bass (Saundra) of Lake Placid, Ronnie Bass of Sebring and Robert Bass of Lake Placid; grandson Waylon Bass.; and many nieces and nephews. He was the son of George R. and Hattie (Ralph) Bassett. Dean attended school in Fairmont and graduated from Fairmont High School with the class of 1952. On October 11, 1958, Dean was united in marriage to Sharon L. Osberg in South Dakota. The couple resided in Fairmont. In fact, Dean was born in his house and where he lived his entire life! This union was blessed with four children, Brian, Allan, Lisa, and Mark. Dean and Sharon shared over 65 years together. Dean worked for many years as a lineman for the Fairmont Power Plant. He was a proud member of the Fairmont Fire Department, serving for 20 years before his retirement. He was a long-time member of St. Paul Lutheran Church where he was continually active, having held several positions in the church over the years. During his free time, Dean enjoyed looking for deals and frequented many pawn shops over his life. Dean could also tinker like no other and could fix just about anything that needed fixing. ?When wiring gets hectic, call Bassett Electric.? Dean never met a deal, stranger, joke, snow blower, or free giveaway that he didn?t like. He got a hand me down iPad several years ago and became a super user on Craigslist (small engines were his item of choice). Dean was the first to poke fun at himself and he had plenty of material to work with. The unmistakable Dean characteristic was his one in a million smile that was given out freely, often, and to anyone. He loved his family and loved to visit with family and friends. He brightened our world and will be missed greatly. Bill was born February 15, 1953 in Wichita, Kansas to Edith M Brattin-Bassett and Noble William Bassett. Bill will be remembered as an artful craftsman, teacher of his trade and a passionate fisherman. He was a jokester and prankster with a contagious belly-laugh that often brought everyone to tears. He was a thoughtful story-teller, builder of birdhouses, and lover of scary movies. He was patient, generous, good natured, mindful, kind, loyal, and honest to a fault. Bill was a loving and tolerant husband, proud parent, grandparent, friend, and confidant who will be in our hearts for eternity. For such a quiet man, his reputation spoke volumes. The lessons he taught will follow us through our lives and be shared with our children and generations to come. His notable wit will be especially missed. The Lakeview Funeral Home is assisting the family with arrangements. George Arnold Hendricks was born on April 5, 1926, in Manyaska Township, Martin County, MN. He was the son of Arnold and Sophie (Bassett) Hendricks. George attended Welcome country school. George served his country during World War II with the Army 82nd Airborne. At one point during his service in Europe, George had the opportunity to salute General Patton. He received an honorable discharge after the war and was always very proud to have served in the military. On January 2, 1949, George was united in marriage to Geraldine Plumhoff in Ceylon, MN. The couple moved to the family farm near Welcome where they spent their lives dedicated to farming. This union was blessed with two sons, Rodney and Steven. George and Geraldine shared sixty-seven years together. George was a member of the Welcome American Legion Post 553 as well as being a long-time member of Fox Lake Golf Club where he enjoyed playing cards on Thursday nights. George also enjoyed playing cribbage, going hunting, and especially loved fishing. October 20, 2017 Elizabeth Jane Newton was born in Chicago, Illinois to Cora and Julian Bassett on April 18, 1918 and took her final journey home to be with her Lord on October 10, 2017 at the age of ninety-nine. Known as Betty to her friends and Nanny by her family, she had a rich full life. Growing up in west Texas, the oldest of four children, she met and married Woodrow Newton, the love of her life. They moved to California for a time where she had her first two sons, Andy and Bob, while "Woody" helped the war effort working on airplanes. After the war, they moved back to west Texas and settled in Ft. Stockton where they had their last two sons, Jim and John. Raising four boys and loving her husband was her greatest joy. In 1958, the Newtons moved to Kingsland where they operated a fishing camp until a series of events led them to move to Ft. Worth in 1961. It was here that the greatest life changing event took place as they began to attend church and all came to know Christ as their savior. Betty fell in love with the word of God and from that time on, she was a faithful servant of Christ. In 1964, Woodrow, Betty and the two younger boys moved back to Kingsland where they converted the fishing camp into a Christian retreat area for churches. In 1968, Woodrow moved the family to Longview and it was there that Betty lost the love of her life to cancer in the summer of 1969. She remained in Longview working as a real estate agent and becoming a regular volunteer for mission organizations and her church. With a special love for sharing Christ, Betty was heavily involved with the local office and administration of the Child Evangelism Fellowship. She would host Good News Clubs in her home for the neighborhood children and numerous outreach endeavors all over Longview. Her home was the central station for Newton gatherings, especially Christmas Eve. In her last years she has lived with her son, Jim and wife, Ruby in Riverside, Texas and finally relocated to her last home with her youngest son, John and his wife, Cindy in Santa Fe, Texas. Everywhere she has lived, Betty leaves a trail of great friends that she loved and she was loved by them. Her family and those who knew her would agree that she fit the mold of Solomon's description of the virtuous woman, "Many daughters have done virtuously, but thou excellest them all. Favour is deceitful, and beauty is vain: but a woman that feareth the LORD, she shall be praised." (Proverbs 31:29-30) Mrs. Newton is preceded in death by her parents, her siblings, her husband and her eldest son. However, she is survived by three sons and their wives, thirteen grandchildren and their spouses, and 28 great grandchildren and an expectant great, great grandchild. 1869	Langeland Family Funeral Homes Mark W. Bass October 11, 1950 ? April 23, 2025 Age 74, passed away on Wednesday, April 23, 2025. Mark was born in Kalamazoo, Michigan on October 11, 1950, the son of the late William B. and Thelma E. (Lehman) Bass. He was part of the first graduating class from Portage Northern High School who attended all four years in the new high school. Mark attended Berklee College of Music in Boston, Massachusetts. He was an accomplished musician and could play many instruments, including piano, guitar and all percussion instruments, but was most skilled at playing drums. From the time he was in high school, Mark played in numerous bands of all different music genres and occasionally with his dad. During the late ?70s and early ?80s, he also traveled with a couple different Roll and Roll bands. Mark played with the Kalamazoo Concert Band for more than 30 years and sometimes did sound effects for All Ears Radio Theatre. On April 24, 1976, he married the former Lisa C. Bruce, who survives. Mark is also survived by his sister, Julie (David) Burkett; nephew, William (Shelly) Burkett; niece, Molly Burkett and great-nephews, Micah and Simon Burkett. 1870	Larkin Funeral Home Edwina Acker Bassett 1939 - 2026 Edwina Acker Bassett, 86, passed away on March 3, 2026, in Riverton, Utah. She was born on August 28, 1939, in Bessemer, Alabama, to Evelyn Elizabeth Dickey Acker and Emery Oscar Acker. On August 1, 1948, she was baptized into The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in a creek ? a simple, sacred beginning to a lifetime of devoted discipleship. She was bright, intelligent, witty, and deeply talented and cultivated those gifts throughout her life. She was an editor of her high school newspaper and a member of the National Honor Society. She had a gift for writing, poetry, theater, and journalism. She first met William Lynn Bassett while he was serving as a missionary in her branch. After his mission, they began corresponding by mail throughout her junior and senior years of high school while he served overseas in the United States Army. She later attended Brigham Young University and married Lynn on June 10, 1959, in the Manti Utah Temple. Together they built a life centered on faith, family, and service. They lived in Utah, California, and Georgia. They raised five children: Laurie Gail, William Mark, David Brandon, Jennifer Lynne, and Clayton Emery. Her devotion to her Savior Jesus Christ was evident in her lifelong service. She served in Sunday School, Young Women, Relief Society, and Primary. She served faithfully as a temple ordinance worker in the Bountiful Utah Temple and the Atlanta Georgia Temple for more than twenty years, including serving as an assistant to the matron of the Atlanta Georgia Temple from 2006 to 2011. She loved singing and music, reciting and writing poetry, solving crossword puzzles, cooking for her family and loved ones, and gifting her famous fudge. But more than anything, she loved her family and her neighbors. She remembered birthdays and the smallest details that made each child and grandchild feel known and cherished. She was full of light, laughter, and joy. She found great joy in her work with the Children?s Service Society of Utah, helping to place children with adoptive families. Many friends remember her as an angel on earth. That quiet holiness followed her wherever she went. In her final moments, she bore powerful testimony of Jesus Christ, of God?s plan, and of eternal families. She spoke with joyful anticipation about being reunited with her recently departed sister, her mother and other siblings, and particularly her daddy who passed away when she was ten years old. She is survived by Lynn, her husband of 67 years, and by her 5 children, Laurie Cooper (Mitch), Mark (Angie), David (Raina), Jennifer Moore (Sherman), and Clayton (Janelle). She leaves behind a legacy of 22 grandchildren, 35 great-grandchildren, and many beloved nieces, nephews, and loved ones. Her life was one of steady faith, devoted discipleship, and Christlike ministering. Though we will miss her deeply, we rejoice in the promises she trusted so completely. 1879	Legacy Remember, 4 September 2025 Ralph Edward Bassett Long-time Gulfport resident and Navy veteran Ralph Edward Bassett died peacefully in his sleep, reclining on his favorite chair at home on August 30, 2025. Ralph was handy with tools and loved to help people with home repairs. He was a lover of classical music, particularly opera and Christmas carols played by brass ensembles at deafening volumes. He loved crossword puzzles, and groan-inducing pun humor. He was an avid reader of Clive Cussler and Tom Clancy novels, and his favorite story was Charles Dickens's "A Christmas Carol." More on that later. A life-long passion for the spirit of Christmas commenced when Ralph was born on Christmas Day, 1944 to singers Glenn W. Bassett and Hazel C. Bassett (Budworth) in Long Beach, California. Raised by musicians and musical educators, music was foundational to his life. A gifted boy soprano as was his father before him, Ralph sang with his parents from an early age and learned to play the guitar and trumpet at the G. Willard Bassett Voice Studios operated by his parents out of the family home in Santa Ana, California. After graduating from Santa Ana High School, Ralph attended nearby Chapman College and worked as a lineman for Southern California Edison before enlisting in the Navy. At 21 years of age, Ralph enlisted in the U.S. Navy where he proudly served 2 years of active duty as a Naval Hospital Corpsman during the Vietnam War. After being honorably discharged, he returned to his home town and his musical roots employing the voice that had developed into a powerful bass-baritone to pursue a career in opera. He married Margaret Webb, née Sisk in 1971 and together the couple founded Orange County Opera, whose mission was to bring opera education to elementary schools. Founded in 1976, Orange County Opera introduced hundreds of thousands of children to comic operas every year for over 40 years in addition to launching the careers of countless young artists. Ralph and Margaret's marriage lasted twelve years and the couple raised a son together in addition to Margaret's two sons and one daughter from her previous marriage. Accepted to the prestigious San Francisco Opera Merola Opera Training Program in 1973, Ralph sang leading roles with opera companies all over the West Coast throughout the mid-1970s in addition to his work with Orange County Opera. He joined the Central City, Colorado, Bonfils-Stanton Artists Training Program as an apprentice artist in 1977, where his uniquely powerful voice gained the attention of New York City Opera's musical director, Julius Rudel. Ralph won auditions with both Munich Opera and New York City Opera in 1978, and Maestro Rudel was instrumental in convincing Ralph to move his family to New York City where he was to become City Opera's heir-apparent to Samuel Ramey. Ralph had a long successful career with City Opera, singing in Lincoln Center and traveling to opera houses all over the world, performing in many nationally televised "Live from Lincoln Center" performances, and appearing in a City Opera cast performance of "Carmen" within the 1977 film "Fun with Dick and Jane." Ralph's voice would be remembered for its astounding power with an ability to carry to the farthest reaches of any opera house. It was City Opera that introduced Ralph to the great love of his life, Catherine Williams. Ralph and Catherine began dating in 1985 and married in 1988 during a break between performances in Saratoga Springs, New York. Married on Father's Day, Ralph's son, William, was best man for the nuptials, and the entire City Opera cast was in attendance to celebrate the couple's vows and serenade the couple with a magnificent kazoo performance of "One Kiss" from the operetta "New Moon." After nearly 40 years of marriage, only death could separate them. In 1989, Ralph and Catherine grew tired of the repeating artist strikes afflicting City Opera, and chose to leave New York City and the opera world behind to own and operate a motel on the beach in Treasure Island, Florida. Ralph remodeled the rooms in the hotel and he and Cathy managed the hotel until 1995, at which point they purchased a home in a depressed neighborhood in nearby Gulfport. After remodeling the home, they began purchasing and remodeling many of the homes in the neighborhood leading to a revitalization of the neighborhood. He is survived by his wife, Catherine; his son, William Bassett; and his two grandchildren Sophia (16), and Andrew (12). William is a biotech manufacturing systems engineer in Davis, California who inherited a great love of opera from his father and his grandchildren are brilliant young minds who may yet develop a taste for their grandfather's art. Christmas was always a special day for Ralph. He shared his birthday with the most significant American holiday gleefully and celebrated with all. He believed strongly that the proper way to ring in the day was with a Christmas Eve viewing of Alistair Sim's Scrooge, properly timed so that the ghost of Christmas present appeared at midnight. Much like Ebeneezer Scrooge after his great redemption, it was always said of Ralph Bassett, that he knew how to keep Christmas well, if any man alive possessed the knowledge. 1880	Legacy Remembers, 1 December 2023 Eleanor Bassett Eleanor Katharine "Kitty" Bassett, née Wile, passed away peacefully in Vacaville, California, on December 5, 2022 at the age of 97. Kitty is survived by her three children, son John (Lillian Friend) of Piedmont, California, daughter Cindy (Robert Larsen) of Seattle, Washington and daughter Katie, (James Burke) of Belvedere California, as well as 11 grandchildren, their spouses and partners, and two great-grandchildren. Kitty is also survived by six beloved nieces and a beloved nephew in the Wile and Bassett families, and their spouses and families. A bright, happy and loving person, Kitty lived a long, wonderful and charmed life. Among other things, Kitty cherished her family, fun, people, ideas, life itself, and, last but not least, dressing stylishly in bright colors. She loved to laugh, even when she didn't get the joke. Kitty was born in Ann Arbor, Michigan on July 13th, 1925, along with her twin brother, Frank Sloan Wile, to their parents Katharine Work Wile and Dr. Udo Julius Wile. Kitty and Frank joined older brothers Thomas ("Tom") and David ("Dave") and they all grew up in a large, elegant, and extended household. On turning eighteen, Kitty left Ann Arbor, and travelled to New England for college where she received her bachelor's degree in Sociology from Connecticut College in 1947. Following her graduation, Kitty returned to Ann Arbor, but soon after bravely departed to seek her destiny in the West. On her quest, she, traveled widely, first to Texas, then to Los Angeles, and ultimately to San Francisco and Honolulu where she worked as a secretary on defense-related projects, some very secret. It was in San Francisco in 1953 at a formal dance at the Fairmont Hotel at that she met her beloved husband Dr. John Washington Bassett. This happy and chance meeting in fine surroundings led to a lifetime love. John was then a young officer the United States Navy, and he left San Francisco soon afterward, but Kitty and John corresponded extensively and their love grew while he was away at sea. Upon his discharge and return, Kitty and John became betrothed, and they were married in Ann Arbor, Michigan on June 5, 1954. Immediately following the celebration of their marriage, Kitty and John undertook a long, and at turns, challenging, amusing, and colorful trip West to find the right place to start John's surgical practice and, more importantly for both, to start a family. At the end of the trip, they settled and made their life and had their family in Portland, Oregon. After many happy years of marriage together, three children and 11 grandchildren, they celebrated their 49th wedding anniversary, prior to John's passing on November 27, 2003. Kitty lived in Portland from 1954 until 2020, moving to Seattle and then to California to be with family. Kitty was a kind, gracious lady whose favorite expression was "Live dangerously!". By those who knew her, Kitty is remembered fondly for her loving devotion as a wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, aunt, and friend, for her magnetic enthusiasm for life, adventure, a good party and for her love of dressing with style. 1881	Legacy Remembers, 10 April 2024 David Bassett David Llyod Bassett passed away peacefully at home on March 30,2024 after many long years of complications from heart disease and diabetes. He was 71. A longtime resident of Connecticut, David earned his degree in accounting from the University of Connecticut and was a trusted Controller for a number of Connecticut businesses. He was an avid supporter and former board member of Tolland Youth football, and a lifelong supporter and volunteer of the Boy Scouts. He was most at home hiking through the woods of Soapstone Mountain. David had been in hospice since January of 2024, but never lost his sense of humor. Per his wishes he will not have any services; rather, he will be cremated, and his ashes will be spread in his favorite state park "So the deer can tromp on them." He is survived and very much loved by his wife of 48.5 years, Manira Wilson-Bassett; his children - son Aaron Bassett of Connecticut, daughter Lauren Bassett of Connecticut, and daughter Manira Skye Bassett-Raschke of Texas; his granddaughter Mae Manira Raschke and son-in-law Shawn Raschke of Texas; daughter of the heart Rae Lappen of Connecticut; sister Mary Ann Bassett of Texas; cousin Darla Bassett-Mueller of Texas; brother and sister-in-law Jim Wilson and Susan Tenczar of Virginia; sister-in-law Tamira Wilson of Connecticut; and sister of the heart Aldonna Ambler of South Carolina. She was a beloved mother, grandmother, and great grandmother. Born in Rocky Mount, NC in 1933 to Jerry Rome Bass and Dellar Ardelia Ellis, she was the youngest of 7 children, and the last of her siblings to pass away. She was known for her sweet disposition, kindly manner, great generosity, strong work ethic, and strength in trials. She had a firm faith in her Savior and served Him and her fellows to the end. She had lived in North Carolina, South Carolina, California, and Utah spending the majority of her life in South Carolina in the Columbia area. She married Richard Williamson Young in 1972. She is survived by her son George Evans Jr. and her daughters Hilda Grant, Sheela Summerhays, and Laura Machado; her other son Jerry Evans preceded her in death in 2002; and two step daughters Deborah McHone and LaSandra Anthony. 1883	Legacy Remembers, 17 November 2022 Enid Thacher Bassett Crook Enid Thacher Bassett Crook, age 86, of South Dennis passed away peacefully surrounded by family on Friday November 11, 2022. She was the wife of the late Dr. Robert Crook. Born in Boston on November 15, 1935, she graduated from Yarmouth High School class of 1953. Enid attended Burdette College and was crowned prom queen her senior year. She was from one of the old Cape families, growing up in South Dennis and enjoyed telling stories about how she and her friends tried to pull up the stakes marking where the new Route 6 was to be laid. She was a direct descendant from the Rogers line from the Mayflower. Enid spent many years with her husband and then her children traveling around the country and living in different states before eventually settling back in her family home on Cape Cod. Enid was involved with extensive volunteer work in the community and was instrumental in raising funds for the original lights on the Dennis-Yarmouth football field and sending the DY band to the Rose Bowl parade. She was an Executive Administrator's Assistant to the Barnstable County Sheriff, was deputized and was recognized as employee of the year. A fierce football fan, she enjoyed watching the Patriots and Tom Brady. She enjoyed reading, traveling, crossword puzzles and knitting. She was also artistically talented, played piano and spent some time performing in plays at the Harwich Junior Theater. She was predeceased by her parents, Alden and Emma Bassett, a son Edward Crook as well as her husband of 42 years. She is survived by her daughter, Celine Crook, sons Douglas Crook and Lincoln Crook and stepson Robert Crook as well as her devoted daughters-in-law Tina Crook and Valerie Crook. Affectionately known by her grandchildren as "Banana" - she is also survived by grandsons Douglas Crook Jr and his wife Jennie and Christopher Fones and granddaughters Kayla Bennion and husband Joe, Sydney Crook, Skylar Fones, Abby Crook and Sarah Crook and a great granddaughter Ellie Bailey Crook. She never missed a birthday or event and her grandkids would look forward to receiving a note in her signature banana shaped cards. 1884	Legacy Remembers, 18 April 2022 Mary Jane Gray Mary Jane Gray, M.D., passed away on January 23, 2022 at the age of 97 in Corvallis, Oregon, where she had been living for more than 30 years. Born in Columbus, Ohio in 1924, educated at Swarthmore College, Washington University Medical School, and Columbia University, she arrived in Burlington, Vermont in 1960 to practice obstetrics and gynecology, and teach at the UVM Medical School. She was one of the very few women practicing in her field at that time, and this in part led her in 1965 to become one of the founders of Planned Parenthood of Vermont. In 1963, she married Thomas Bassett and took on, loved, and raised four teenaged children whose mother had died suddenly four years before. She brought her own family member, a tall and gracious black standard poodle named Mitzi. For many years she balanced the care and tending of the family, house, and gardens with a full obstetrical practice, a full time teaching load, and research. She also joined the Burlington Friends Meeting, which met in the barn behind their house, and often hosted guests for lunch after Quaker meeting on Sundays. In 1979, the marriage ended, and she left Vermont to become head of Women's Health Services at the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill. Upon retirement she moved to Oregon, continuing to volunteer at women's health clinics in Portland and Corvallis. She joined the Corvallis Friends Meeting and became close to many, both in the meeting and outside of it. Mary Jane began to paint in her retirement, almost entirely in watercolors, and almost always landscapes of the Oregon coast, mountains, and woodlands that she loved. She will be deeply missed and fondly remembered by her two surviving stepchildren, Lisa Bassett of Chicago and Marty French of Burlington and their families, as well as her nieces and nephews, in particular David Danforth and his wife Tina who were such a large part of her life. 1888	Legacy Remembers, 31 January 2007 Frances M. Bass Frances M. Bass, 89, of Midland, passed away Tuesday, Jan. 30, 2007, at the home of her daughter, where she had lived for the past 2 1/2 years. Frances was born Nov. 27, 1917, in Gratiot County, to Grace and Allen J. Giles. She lived her younger years in the Breckenridge-St. Louis area and for a time in Toledo, Ohio. After her marriage to Donald O. Bass on Sept. 7, 1940, she lived and worked in St. Louis. When her husband returned after World War II they spent their remaining years in Midland. Her husband of 60 1/2 years predeceased her on May 13, 2001. Frances enjoyed reading, gardening and cooking. She also worked as a housekeeper for several families in the Midland area for many years. She was a very hard worker who enjoyed helping other people. During the last couple of years her physical condition only allowed her to sit and read, but she had another passion and that was eating M&M candies. Her family will always remember her as their M&M Grandma. She is survived by, and will be greatly missed by her son Donald E. Bass and his wife Emily of Grand Forks, N.D.; her daughter Patricia Lyvere of Midland; and five grandchildren, Gary (Jennifer) Bush, Jeffery (Michelle) Bush of Midland, and Kelly Woodcock of Sanford, as well as Dean Bass and Davis Hamilton of Grand Forks, N.D. 1889	Legacy.com Carol Ruth Bassett (Picture included) 1935 2020 Carol Ruth Bassett, age 85, passed away peacefully on March 31, 2020 due to a long struggle with Alzheimer's disease. Carol was born on January 7, 1935 in Rochester, N.Y. to Albert and Beatrice Shedd. She married Arthur Thomas (Tom) Bassett on June 11, 1955, and enjoyed a wonderful marriage to him for 58 years until his death in 2015. Carol had the gift of hospitality and making everyone feel welcome and important. She had a knack for learning and remembering many details about everyone she met. She was always involved in Church. Her relationship with Jesus was of upmost importance and she shared His love and light with all those she encountered. She grew up spending most of her time dancing which she greatly loved. She attended Bowling Green State University where she met her husband and then raised her family in Dayton, Ohio. After spending a few years in New York and Japan, they retired in Florida. She was instrumental in bringing new members to First Methodist Church in Punta Gorda, Fla. where they attended for over 20 years. In late 2014, due to declining health, Tom and Carol moved to Winston-Salem, N.C. to be close to their daughter. Carol is survived by her son, Steve Bassett (Kathy) and daughter Sheri Bowman, and grandchildren, Kelly Reuss (Paul), Lee Bassett and Ian Bowman, and many wonderful nieces and nephews who she loved and touched deeply. He was preceded in death by his parents, Morris Sheppard Bass and Esther Martin Bass; two brothers, Johnny C. Bass and William P. Bass; and the mother of his children, Marie Trovillion Bass. He is survived by Mary Lou McManus Bass; three sons, Chuck and his wife, Rose, of Vicksburg, MS, Scott of Lake Helen, FL, John of Vicksburg, MS; a daughter, Carla Whitaker of Nashville, TN; four grandchildren, Gideon and Jeremy Whitaker and Nicole and Tyler Bass; and a great-granddaughter, Kile. 1891	Legacy.com Murray Sherman Bass 1939 ? 2025 Murray Bass, 86, passed away on December 19, 2025 in Delray Beach, Florida, leaving behind a family who loved him deeply and a life defined by creativity, dedication, and quiet achievement. Murray was married for 41 years to Joanne Villafana Bass, with whom he built a life grounded in family and shared commitment. In addition to his wife Joanne, Murray is survived by his three sons Michael (and his husband Ed), Peter, and his youngest son Alex. He is also survived by his granddaughter Nicole Bass, his sister-in-law Judy Villafana, brother-in-law Allan Villafana, and his nephews James, Bobby, and Matthew. A graduate of Suffolk University, Murray developed an early fascination with the toy industry. He went on to have an immensely successful career working for several industry-leading companies, where his creativity and business instincts were widely respected. Later in his career, he became the founder of his own toy business, creating beautifully designed products that reflected both his imagination and attention to detail. Outside of his professional life, Murray pursued photography as a passion. Working with the Northern Valley Press located in Westwood, NJ, he documented local high school sporting events, graduation ceremonies, parades, town races, and other community moments?capturing memories that would long outlive the day they were taken. Photography was more than a hobby; it was another way Murray expressed how closely he observed the world around him, and it was a pastime he enjoyed for more than 40 years. Murray will be remembered for his steadiness, his creativity, and the deep pride he took in his family. His presence was constant, his contributions meaningful, and his life well lived. 1892	Legacy.com, 12 December 2023 Ross Allen Bass Ross Allen Bass, loving husband and proud father, peacefully entered eternal rest on Saturday, December 9, 2023, at the age of 56. Ross was born on April 1, 1967, in Port Arthur, Texas to James and Helen Bass. He spent most of his life protecting others, keeping those around him on their toes, and picking on everyone he cared about. Ross devoted 23 years of his life to serving his community as a Police Officer. Although that was his career, his true passion was the outdoors. Ross often jokingly bragged about his impressive archery abilities but had every right to do so. He ranked number one in the state of Texas for archery at the young age of 16. He spent much of his younger days guiding duck hunts at LaBoves before moving on to guiding many notable people at the legendary King Ranch. In his later years Ross spent every second he could with his family, preferably still in the great outdoors whether fishing or hunting. The experience Ross had, and his big heart led him to share his immense knowledge with those who often sought it. He was stern and honest, and told you exactly how it was, but never left you hanging without a possible remedy or reassurance that he was there to help however he could. Ross fought fiercely to stay earth side for 13 years, far exceeding his prognosis of only 5 years in 2010. Despite toting an oxygen tank around 24/7, Ross never lost his sense of humor. He had an unmatched ability to make others smile through his storytelling, jokes, and lighthearted pranks. Ross took great responsibility for being born on April Fool's Day. Ross cherished his beloved wife and caretaker, Wendy, and the 34 years they lived out their vows. He loved and protected his children, Kayla, and Greg, fiercely. He was incredibly proud of his children and their accomplishments. Ross cherished his family and loved them immensely. Ross was joyously reunited in Heaven with his parents, James and Helen, and sister, Georgie Volz, and the rest of those who have gone before him. Those left to cherish his memory for the time being include his wife Wendy of Nederland, TX; daughter, Kayla and husband Lindon Hightower of Bridge City, TX; son, Greg Bass and significant other Taylor Baumgardner of Orangefield, TX; brothers, Jim Bass and wife Sheila of Nederland, TX, Raymond Bass and wife Carol of Magnolia, Texas; numerous relatives and friends he considered family. Larry did construction work his entire career with a specialty in acoustic ceilings. He was an avid Nascar fan. He enjoyed racing go carts and doing small engine repairs. 1894	Legacy.com, 30 November 2024 Michael Channing Bass Michael Channing Bass, born October 13, 1963, passed away suddenly on November 24, 2024. A beloved husband, son, brother, father, grandfather and friend. Mike's life was marked by his dedication to family and his kindness in helping others and giving encouragement. Mike was the youngest son of Larry Bass, II and Fan Bass (Mike Milligan). His siblings are Larry Bass, III (Barbara) of Texas, Daniel Bass of Tennessee and De'an Bass of Tennessee. Most of Mike's formative years were spent in the Nashville area, where he graduated from John Overton High School. He furthered his education at the University of Tennessee-Knoxville and enjoyed much success as he worked his way up in the Automotive Industry for the last 40 years. Mike was an avid car and motorcycle enthusiast. Over his lifetime he enjoyed driving and racing cars, motorcycles and Karts. Mike was married for 33 years to the love of his life, Shelly Rainwater Bass. Throughout his life, he exemplified a loving and devoted father to Rachel Kessinger (Daniel Chafin) and Alissa Bass. For Mike being a doting and loving grandfather to his three granddaughters was the absolute joy of his life. A Celebration Service for Mike and his legacy will be held on Tuesday, December 3, 2024, at Brentwood Baptist Church, 7777 Concord Road, Brentwood in Baskin Chapel at 10:30 am. Family and friends are invited to a visitation time to honor Mike by sharing stories of him and enjoying light refreshments. 1895	Leicester Chronicle, February 6, 1869 Claybrook Accidental Death ? On Monday, the lst inst., an inquest was held before J. Gregory, Esq., coroner, at Great Claybrook, on the body of Josiah Bassett, deceased, in the employ of Mr. Clarke, of Claybrook. From the evidence of Walter Stannage, a boy aged 12 years, who reside at Frowlesworth, it appeared that on Friday afternoon, the 29th ult., he and his brother were going to a field occupied by their father, and adjoining the road leading from Frowlesworth to Claybrook, to fetch two cows up, when the deceased overtook them as they were going up the hill with an empty wagon and three horses. He was walking by the side of the horses. He appeared half ?fresh?, as he staggered rather. He (witness) and his brother asked if they might ride, and deceased said, ?Yes, if you can get in.? They both got in the cart, and after that the deceased got on the shaft on the same side as deceased was driving, and stood upright on it. Almost as soon as he got on, the horses began to trot down hill. The deceased dropped his whip, and then fell across the shafts. Deceased shouted out to the horses, and they stopped, and he then called to some boys who were behind in the lane to bring him his whip, and they did so. Deceased then started the horses off again, and they got into a trot and went down the hill, and ran up against Mr. Wright?s gate, at Claybrook mill, and ran along close by the dyke side. Deceased then got on the shaft horse?s back to try to reach the bridle rein to stop it, when he rolled off on the far side, and both the wheels of the wagon went over him. The horses went on, and witness and his brother got out of the wagon and ran and told Mr. Wright, and he and one of his men went to the deceased. It appeared the wheels ran over deceased?s head and along his left arm, and death must have been instantaneous. Deceased was only 23 years of age. Verdict, ?Accidental death?.	Bassett, Josiah (I69)
