1901	Logan Herald Journal, March 4, 2018 Mabel Lorraine Riggs Bassett (Picture included) 1928 ? 2018 On March 2, 2018, Lorraine decided it was time to check in on her sweetheart, Calvin, and see what projects he has been working on in heaven. Lorraine was born on April 30, 1928, to George Albert Perkins Riggs and Mabel Leishman Scott Riggs. She was the youngest of seven. In this life she was blessed to have her siblings be some of her closest friends. She cherished and loved each of them. And enjoyed telling adventures they had of floating the river, and shearing sheep. But her greatest adventure of all started one day while she was waiting on a customer at the counter of the Woolworth Store in Logan, Utah. A young man leaned over to his buddy, pointed at her and said. "I'm going to marry that girl one day" and he did! On February 12, 1951, George Calvin Bassett and Mabel Lorraine Riggs were married in the Logan LDS Temple. Lorraine was the perfect example of love, compassion, loyalty and an inspiring example of a devoted wife. Calvin was her world, and she was his. It didn't matter what was going on as long as they were together that's all that mattered. Together they started their own business - Cache Valley Roofing Company. They enjoyed raising calves in the North Forty (a small patch of grass in the back of their home), building the family cabin in Blacksmith Fork Canyon, traveling to Wendover for a weekend retreat, and making sure the deer had plenty of food during the winter. But together their greatest love in this world was their children: Teresa, Stan, and Craig. Lorraine was known for her love of animals and has not only been the mother of her own children, but to many orphaned cats, dogs, birds, skunks, lambs, raccoons and baby pigs. She was the one who you would call if you saw a stray dog or cat walking the streets, or if you had an injured animal that needed some care. On October 8, 1980 Lorraine was the top story of The Cache Citizen paper. The article highlighted her love and compassion towards animals. One story that is told in the article is of her "Baby Deer". Hearing Lorraine tell this story warmed the hearts of many. Not to mention her giggling along the way while telling it. The article reads as followed: "When Mrs. Bassett was a youngster her father, a sheep rancher, brought home a young fawn whose mother who had been killed. She raised it on a bottle and the two almost become inseparable. "It would come down with me every morning to the bus. Then it would be back home. About 3:30pm it was there waiting for me." She recalls "Everywhere I'd go here would come this deer..." What the article doesn't tell you is that she literally means everywhere! One afternoon she went to the show with her friends, halfway during the show her Baby Deer comes walking down the isle of the theater! This is a priceless memory that as friends and family we will forever hold close to our hearts. She survived by three children and one daughter-in-law, Teresa, Stanley C. (Sandra) and Craig Bassett; two grandchildren, Amber (Thayne) and Cody; and one great grandson Calvin Grant. A viewing will be held in Lorraine's honor on Wednesday March 7, 2018, at the Allen-Hall Mortuary, 34 E. Center from 6:00-8:00pm. A graveside service will be held the following day Thursday March 8, 2018, at the Hyrum City Cemetery at 11:00 a.m. 550 E Main St Hyrum, UT. 1902	Logan Herald Journal, Utah, 25 June 2022 Betty Sharon Bassett 1933 ? 2022 Betty Sharon Bassett, 88, passed away on June 20, 2022 at Sunshine Terrace in Logan, Utah. Sharon lived in the family home in Wellsville for many of her later years. Along with her precocious cats, before moving back to Wellsville, she worked and retired from Hillfield. Sharon along with her sister Joyce, were very close and spent many happy hours together throughout her life. Joyce was always there for Sharon whenever she needed or wanted anything. Sharon was preceded in death by her parents; father; Royce C. Bassett and mother; Afton Peterson Bassett, sisters; Joyce Bassett Strebel sister; Della Mae Bassett, brothers; Warren and Jarvis Bassett. Sharon is survived by her two brothers; Bill and Jim Bassett and a sister; Shonie Harris. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Sunshine Terrace Foundation in Logan, Utah. 1903	Logan Herald, December 4, 2016 James Van Miller (Picture included) April 6, 1957 ? Dec. 2, 2016 Cache Valley lost a very unique and special man on Thursday, Dec 2, 2016. One cannot convey here all the love, wisdom, energy and compassion displayed by this man over the course of his 59 years. He was born on April 6, 1957. He was the first born son of James Paul and Mary Joyce Darley Miller. He lived his entire life in Hyrum where he received his schooling and graduated in 1975. In 1978 he married his best friend and love of his life Wende Bassett. This was one of the happiest days of his life. Other joyous days were the birth of their three children. He was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. His religion was very private and important part of his life. Van loved the outdoors. He found great satisfaction as a master craftsman in construction and roofing. He was never a fan of a suit and tie. He was most comfortable in his seven layers of clothing. He loved to trap and fish. In his youth he won many first place trophies motocross racing. He will be especially missed when hunting season rolls around again. He loved to hunt both deer and pheasant with his children and grandchildren. We will miss his sometimes quiet demeanor, sly sense of humor, teasing way, and the help and guidance he offered to people in need. The light has gone out in Van's back yard. There will be one less campfire in Hyrum. He found great comfort in his nightly ritual of a back yard campfire. He was a firm believer that the most meaningful and truthful conversations result around a fire. He enjoyed sharing it with one and all. He was preceded in death by his mother, Mary Joyce, one brother Marty his grandparents, and his BELOVED ETERNAL WIFE Wende. He is survived by his children Joshua Van (Blaire), Heidi Joyce (Shaun) Carson N. (Keirshia) and the joy of his life his grandchildren, Dawson, Wende, Hudson, Navy, Lincoln, and stepson, his father James Paul (Suzann) Miller, sisters, Michelle Summers, Jill Lowe, Jann Leishman, brothers Jamie and Jeff Miller. Bassett, 42, formerly of Monticello, died at 12:15 p.m. Thursday in the Veteran's Administration Hospital in Marion. He was a patient for several months. Born June 14, 1945, in Biloxi, Miss., he was the son of Donald A. and Ida Mae Whitmore Bassett. He was a member of Our Lady of the Lakes Catholic Church. He lived in Monticello most of his life. He was an Army veteran serving in the military police. Surviving are three children, Paul, Tina and Joe; a brother, Donald Guy (Bassett) Lebanon, and two sisters, Donna Mae Rundell, Broomfield, Colo., and Joan Campbell, Monticello. He was known to design, repair, and build anything he could imagine in his mind, and any request someone presented him with. His favorite things to do was work in his woodshop, hunting, and sitting on his porch drinking coffee, especially with friends and family. Robert was known as a kind, friendly, and generous person, with a sense of humor, always joking around with others and making people laugh. He would help anyone who asked of him and didn?t hesitate to give the shirt off his back Most of all, he loved his family, especially his grandchildren, who were his pride and joy. He will be greatly missed, for he was greatly loved. 1907	Low Country Cremation & Burial ? Reidsville, 8 Feburary 2023 Katherine Bass Katherine Lynn Bass, age 92, passed away on Tuesday, February 7, 2023, at her home. She was born on December 2, 1930, to Daniel and Kate (Collins) Lynn in Collins. Even though she was born in a small town, she had big time dreams. She left Tattnall County after graduation and would go on to attend St. Luke's College of Health Science where she would attain her degree and become a Registered Nurse. Never one to stop learning, she would further her education at the University of Alabama Birmingham where she would graduate with her master's and become a nurse anesthetist. She would ply her skills in medicine in Arab, Alabama before moving to Reidsville in 1974. Once "home" she would finish out her career at Tattnall Memorial Hospital. Following her retirement, she was able to devote more time to various causes including the V.F.W. Auxiliary, the Pink Ladies, and a vital member of Reidsville United Methodist Church, now known as Grace Pointe. Whatever the endeavor, she had a heart of service and loved helping people. In her free time, she would, more often than not, be found in her yard attending to her flowers and manicuring her grounds. A lifetime spent in service to others and working to make the world a better place; she will be deeply missed by all who knew her. She is preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Carl H. Bass, Sr; her siblings, Eva Lee Pittman, Lois Giebner, Carolyn Martin, Gene Lynn, D.J. Lynn, Edward Harold Lynn and Inez Marie Lynn and her granddaughter, Julie Bass Sikes. Gaudette, 90, of Lowell, MA formerly of North Chelmsford died Tuesday, August 26, 2014 at the Life Care Center in Billerica, MA. Born in North Chelmsford, she was the daughter of the late Philip Napoleon and Grace (Bessette) Gaudette. Rena was raised in N. Chelmsford and attended the Chelmsford School System. Rena retired in 1989 from the Brady Business Forms Company, where she worked as a machine operator. She had previously worked for the Uxbridge Mills, the Churchill Manufacturing Company, the McGowen Educator Cracker Company, and the U.S. Rubber Co. She was a communicant of the Notre Dame de Lourdes Church in Lowell and a member of the Blessed Virgin Mary Sociality. Rena volunteered at the House of Hope and the Lowell Food Pantry for many years. She is survived by three sisters, Alma Knight of Johnsonville, SC, Theresa Knight of Manchester, NH and Rita Ayotte of Lowell; one sister-in-law, Gabriel Gaudette of Lowell and thirty-three nieces and nephews. 1910	Lowell Sun, December 15, 2015 Althea C. Bassett of Lowell, 95 (Picture included) LOWELL -- Althea (Collins) Bassett, 95, passed away peacefully December 10 at D'Youville Manor. She was the beloved wife of the late Arthur J. Bassett. She was born in Billerica on September 26, 1920. She was the daughter of Josiah Hardwick and Albertha Hatfield Collins. An honors graduate of Lowell High School, she attended Katherine Gibbs Business School in Boston prior to a successful Lowell real estate business with her husband. They both enjoyed a happy retirement in Boynton Beach, Florida. Althea treasured her many enduring friendships in the Lowell area and Florida. Known for her sense of humor, she loved nothing better than getting together for some funny stories. We all remember for fifty years her double table bridge parties. She will be deeply missed. 1911	Lowell Sun, Massachusetts, June 19, 2021 Dorothy Ann Quigley, Windham NH Dorothy Ann "Dottie" Quigley, 81, of Windham, NH passed away on Thursday, June 17, 2021 at the Parkland Medical Center in Derry, NH. She was born on March 27, 1940 to Dorothy (Baxter) and Joseph F. Bassett. Dorothy was raised in Lowell and Tyngsborough, where she was a graduate of Notre Dame Academy, in the class of 1958. Dorothy married the love of her life, Donald Quigley on December 26, 1959 while he was on leave from the Marine Corps. The couple raised their family in Tyngsborough and later moved to Windham, NH. Dottie loved taking vacations to the beach, especially to her cherished condo in Rye, spending countless hours at Wallis Sands Beach. Dottie and Don loved going on cruises together, typically exploring different countries and beaches, whether as a couple or while traveling with family and friends. Family was a prime importance to Dottie, she was known as always being the hostess for holidays and family gatherings. Known to her grandsons as "Nini," these boys were absolutely her pride and joy. The cherished name was created by her oldest grandson. She relished the time spent with them, never missing a game, school event or having them over for sleepovers and rootbeer floats. Dorothy is predeceased by three precious angels, their stillborn children; and her beloved son, Michael Quigley who passed March 1, 2017. She was always so proud of the fact that he called her the funniest person he knew. She is also predeceased by her sister, Judith Buckjune who passed away in 2000. Dottie and Judy were thick as thieves and had mastered the art of the Irish goodbye to the delight of their daughters. Dorothy is survived by her loving husband of 61 years, Donald Quigley; her daughter, Linda Quigley of Nashua, NH and her fiance Jim Perry; her grandsons, Nicholas Reed, Infantryman, US Army in Fort Drum, NY and Jackson Reed of Nashua; her siblings, Joseph F. 1914	LPJ, 26 April 1888 Michael Bass who died in this city, Sunday, the 15th inst., was born at Bayton, Germany, March 24, 1818, and emigrated to his country in 1831, landing at New Orleans. From there he went to Louisville, Ky., where, in August, 1839, he took out naturalization papers in the court of that place. He married there and came to Louisiana in the spring of 1846, where he resided up to the time of his death. Four children were the result of this union ? 1917	Lucas Funeral Homes Theda Joy Bass August 15, 1935 ? June 7, 2022 Mrs Theda Joy (Weaver) Bass passed away on Tuesday, June 7th at 1:15 pm. She was 85 years old. She was a resident at Heritage House of Keller in Keller, Texas. Theda was married to W.C. Bass since June 19th, 1954, and was married to him for 68 years on his passing in January of 2012. They had no children. Theda was the last living of all her siblings. Brothers were Herman Weaver, Willis Weaver, Truman Weaver of New Mexico. Sisters were Wilma Gatewood of New Mexico, and Marjo Cooper of Texas. Parents of Theda Bass were Earl Emmett Weaver and Eva Mae Mullins Weaver. Theda was born August 15th, 1935, and grew up in Tucumcari, New Mexico where she met W.C. in high school. She was of Baptist faith and very active in her church her whole life, where she served fervently. Theda spent most of her married years in Pampa, Texas. She was an office manager, she also was a distributor of Mary Kay Cosmetic products. She was also a caregiver for many. 1918	Lunn?s Colonial Funeral Home ? Wichita Fallas ? 1 December 2023 Lynn Kuehn Bassett Lynn Houghlin Kuehn Bassett passed away on November 27, 2023 in Wichita Falls, Texas. A memorial service celebrating Lynn's life will be held on Saturday, December 9th at 1:00 p.m. in the chapel at Lunn's Colonial Funeral Home in Wichita Falls. She will be laid to rest in Mount Olivet Cemetery in Pauls Valley, Oklahoma. Lynn was born January 4, 1936, in Pauls Valley to Jessie and John Houghlin. She graduated from Pauls Valley High School and the University of Oklahoma with a B.S. degree in Elementary Education. While at OU, Lynn was a member of Delta Delta Delta sorority, BMOC, and Tassels Honorary Society. She danced in Sooner Scandals musical reviews at OU. Lynn was a teacher in Midwest City, Oklahoma and Dallas, Texas. She moved to Austin where she taught kindergarten at Good Shepherd Church School and Eanes Elementary in Westlake Hills. She was a teacher for 28 years. One of Lynn's greatest joys was her classroom of children, and she kept in touch with many of her students throughout the years. In 1989, Lynn married Fred Bassett and moved to Wichita Falls, where she helped operate the ABC Day Care. She was active in community organizations supporting the performing arts, including the Wichita Falls Ballet Board, Wichita Falls Symphony Board, Wichita Falls Symphony League, and was a long-time co-sponsor of Applause! organization for high school students in the performing arts. Lynn was a member of Floral Heights United Methodist Church, where she was a member of the choir. If it involved music, dance, reading, or any combination of those, Lynn wanted to be involved in some way. Lynn was preceded in death by her parents, sister, Johnece Ryerson, and husband Fred Bassett. Leonard was a husband, father, and man of faith whose life reflected humility, service, and unwavering love. As a skilled electrician by trade, he worked diligently and honorably, believing that all work done should be done correctly and with a spirit of excellence. He lived demonstrating strength through kindness and faith in action. A lover of music and a faithful servant of the church, Leonard found deep purpose in serving within the music ministry. Growing up with a father standing firm behind the pulpit, a mother leading Sunday school classes and siblings playing an instrument or singing, he quite literally was raised up on the Word and the ways of living saved. Through song and service, he used his gifts to glorify God and encourage others. Music was not only something he enjoyed, it was a ministry through which his faith spoke when words were unnecessary. Leonard cherished time with his family and friends, gathering with loved ones through his cooking, conversation, and calm presence. He lived in Seattle, Dallas, and Portland, carrying the same Christ-centered spirit wherever he went. He loved people without judgment, extended grace freely, and walked in forgiveness?reflecting the heart of Christ in his daily life. Leonard was preceded in death by his parents, Charley and Aline Bass; his brothers, Eric and Frederick Sr.; and his sisters, Lydia and Rebecca. Steve Bassett, who would have been 65 years of age on March 7, died at his home here late Sunday night after an illness of several weeks. Mr. Bassett was the owner of many acres of Houston County land and much real estate in the City of Fort Valley. He was a member of the Congregational Church, founded and built by his father many years ago. His wife died a few years ago. She was before her marriage ss Maud Brown. Four children survive. They are Miss Lucy Bassett, Ralph, Noble and Steve Bassett of this city. Mrs. Bassett was born in the town of Madison 46 years ago, being a daughter of the late Alonzo Wilber, an old-time resident of that town, and who died a few weeks since. She had lived in this vicinity for more than 25 years. Mrs. Bassett, although of a quiet and retiring temperament, was possessed of those qualities of heart and mind looked for in the consistent Christian. She will be missed in her neighborhood. 1925	Maine Sunday Telegram, Portland, Maine, Sunday, 2 March 2025 Charles W. Bass CAPE ELIZABETH ? Charles W. Bass, 71, passed away on Feb. 11, 2025, surrounded by his loving family. Charlie was born in April 1953, in Washington D.C., son of the late W. Streeter Jr. and Rita (Schwep) Bass. As the son of a CIA agent and great-grandson of the founder of G.H.BASS & CO., Charlie had an affinity for life and family, with a deep curiosity and appreciation for the world around him. At an early age, he lived in West Berlin during the Cold War where his father served as an undercover agent. Once returning home, he attended St. Albans School and sang in the choir of the Washington National Cathedral. He later attended Bowdoin College, graduating in 1976 with a B.A. in Government. Throughout his life, Charles was known as a man of deep passion and caring for those around him. He co-founded the Metro DC chapter for the Epilepsy Foundation, helped prevent the Theater at Monmouth from closing (as an avid reader of Shakespeare), and was a steadfast advocate of education and the arts. Seizing every opportunity to help his community, he always believed in leaving the world better than how he found it. For those who knew him, Charlie warmed every room he was in and led with kindness, generosity and compassion. He was a model gentleman, boundless student, devoted husband and treasured father. His greatest pride were his children, with wonderful memories of their many travels and summers at their family home on Mt. Desert Island. As he begins his next adventure, the memory of his gentle smile and caring spirit will live on in the hearts of those he touched. 1926	MAJOR ALFRED F. SEARS. To a great majority business activity indicates the concentration of effort in a single place. The profession to which Major Alfred F. Sears turned his attention, however, called him to various sections not only of the United States but also of Mexico and various South American countries. As a civil engineer his labors were of inestimable value in promoting railway and business projects that have been of the utmost worth in developing the different sections in which he has labored. He has come to an honored old age, for he has traveled life's journey for eighty-four years ? years in which mental development has been a continuous force in his life, the precious prize of keen intellect remaining his to the present day. Advanced scientific attainments have gained him prominence in his chosen field of labor, and with a mind receptive and retentive, he has also gleaned in his travels knowledge of far-reaching purport and interest concerning the lands he has visited and the peoples among whom he has lived. He was born in Boston, Massachusetts, November lO, 1826, and is descended from Pilgrim Revolutionary stock. His great-grandfather, Zachariah Sears, of Yarmouth, Cape Cod, was a lieutenant of militia in 1776, although then seventy-two years of age. His grandfather, Joseph Henry Sears, when but fourteen years of age, joined the regiment commanded by Colonel Nat Freeman, of Yarmouth, and served with the American troops in Rhode Island. His father, Zebina Sears, inherited the family passion for liberty and in 1816 commanded the brigantine Neptune, a cruiser in the service of the states of La Plata, then engaged in their war for independence from Spain. He made three successful voyages between New Orleans and Buenos Aires with men, arms and ammunition for the patriots, but was finally captured by a Spanish frigate which he fought until his own ship was sunk. He was taken to Spain for trial and sent for life to the penal colony of Melilla, on the coast of Morocco, from which he at length made his escape by aid of brother Masons, and eventually reached Boston. Major Alfred F. Sears, the fourth in a family of seven children, pursued his education in the public schools of his native city, where he won a Franklin medal for scholarship on graduation from the Winthrop school in 1841. He then entered the English High school and was graduated with the class of 1844. The following year was spent in a mercantile counting house, and another year in an architect's office, but preferring outdoor life he took up civil engineering, for which he was well adapted. He had pursued a special course in mathematics from Master Sherwin, of the high school, and this proved a good foundation for further preparation for his chosen profession. On the 8th of June, 1846, he, entered upon active business connection with the profession at the Boston water-works', under the distinguished civil engineer, E. S. Chesbrough. He was afterward connected with the Cheshire Railroad of New Hampshire and subsequently became resident engineer of the Baltimore & Ohio Railroad, under the late Benjamin H. Latrobe. At the outbreak of the Civil war Major Sears was acting as surveyor of Newark, New Jersey. He resigned in June of that year to raise a company which was afterward enrolled as Company E, First New York Volunteer Engineers, and in October was sent to Hilton Head, in the expeditionary corps for the capture of Forts Beauregard and Walker. After about a year Captain Sears was stationed with his company at Hilton Head in hard service and also in the initial work of investing Fort Pulaski. In that connection he located and built the battery in the rear of Pulaski on Jones island in the Savannah river, known as Fort Vulcan, thereby cutting off all communication by steamer between >the fort and the city of Savannah. He also destroyed three-quarters of a mile of telegraph line between these points. He was next sent to Florida on important service and following his return rejoined his company. After the battle of James island on the i6th of June, 1862, he was ordered to Fort Clinch, Florida, to prepare the fort for defense against land attacks. Shortly afterward he came north to confer with General Totten, the chief engineer of the army, and during the visit, in October, 1862, through special dispensation of the grand lodge he was made a Mason in Kane Lodge of New York city. A week later he returned to Florida where he remained until December, 1865 ? six months after the muster-out of his regiment ? when he returned to Newark, New Jersey, having in the meantime been promoted to the rank of major. He was the only volunteer officer of engineers who was permitted to report directly to the chief engineer of the army at Washington. Following his return to the north, Major Sears was employed as assistant engineer of the Newark (New Jersey) water works, being engaged chiefly in building the Belleville reservoir. Shortly afterward he was elected chief engineer of the Newark & New York Railroad, located that line and also designed and located the first elevated railroad in the United States, passing over the New Jersey Railroad and to the city limits, over twenty blocks. When that road passed into the hands of the New York Central Railroad he was superceded by the chief engineer of that line. Many of the positions to which he has been called in later years have come to him by reason of his power as a linguist, for he is versed in Italian, Portuguese, French and Spanish. He was engaged by an American company to visit Costa Rica where he made preliminary surveys across the continent from the Gulf of Nicoya to Puerto Limon on the Carribean sea, and on his return to the United States was selected as the chief engineer of a railroad in Central New York which he left in 1869 to take charge of the Atlantic division of the Costa Rica Railroad from Puerto Limon to the division line between the oceans. In the following year the Costa Rican government became bankrupt and Major Sears was invited by the late Henry Meiggs, railway king of South America, to visit Peru where he made a contract with the Peruvian government by which he entered the national corps of engineers of which he was a member until 1879. He lived in Peru for seven years, during which period he was appointed inspector of railroads for the government in the north of the republic. He was also chief engineer of the irrigation commission for devising a system of water works and sewerage for the cities of Callao, Paita and Piura. Finally he became chief engineer of the Chimbote, Huaraz and Reouay Railroad, where he remained until the war with Chili had bankrupted Peru. As his son had settled in Portland, Major Sears, came to Oregon in 1879. Upon his arrival here he was appointed umpire engineer of the Oregonian rail- way which was then being constructed for a Scotch company of Dundee. Because of his familiarity with the Spanish language, however, he was soon invited to Mexico to become assistant general manager of the Mexican Central Railroad Company, from which position he was called a year later by the Mexican government to take charge as general manager of the Tehuantepec Inter-oceanic Railway. After three months' work, finding the government bankrupt and having received only one month's pay, he became disgusted and returned to Portland, where he has since resided, although frequently visiting the east, Europe and South America. On again taking up his abode in Portland Major Sears began the practice of his profession here and also soon became a prolific periodical writer and lecturer, appearing several times before the University of the City of New York, the American National Geographical Association of New York, the Brooklyn Institute of Arts and Sciences and the Long Island Historical So- ciety, while on many occasions he has delivered lectures and addresses in Port land. In 1 88 1 he lectured in Portland on the Iron and Railroads of the World, giving an account of an iron street-car he had built in New York in 1856 for the Sixth avenue line and a sixty-passenger car for a New Jersey line to Hackensack, and he said at that time that iron street passenger cars had been in successful use on English roads in India and "they will be in use eventually the world over." In 1 88 1 he presented to the people of Portland, in the columns of the Ore- gonian, The Law of Commercial Geography, which has since created discus- sions in the commercial and scientific worlds, and has been presented in lec- tures and papers to the geographical societies of the country and the American Society of Civil Engineers, exciting antagonism until it has become accepted as immutable law in the world's economy, namely : It being understood that commerce does not consist in shipping freight from a port, but is simply tlie exchange of a country's productions for the supplies of the producer, "the commercial metropolis of a region will be that point nearest the producer which can be reached by a deep sea ship," On the 4th of November, 1900, he published in the Oregonian a letter drawn out by the visit of Mr. Mellen, president of the Northern Pacific Railroad, in which he delivered himself on notions antagonizing his position; the letter concluded with this prophecy: "The Northern Pacific Railroad will be forced into Portland by the most direct route possible. This is simply its helpless fate, on which Portland may sleep. The law of commerce, as I have stated it, is the inexorable, immutable law without exception in the world's economy." In a communication published in the Oregonian on the 12th of May, 1883, he suggested to the port of Portland board as follows : "I can think of no port so analogous in conditions to Portland as that of Glasgow, Scotland." After stating the conditions the letter continued: "If our river is to be kept open it must be done by a board like the Clyde trust, working in the interest of Portland and with her money." Shortly after this he was called to Mexico, but Ellis G. Hughes, who was associated in the Oregonian Railroad Company as attorney, of which Mr. Sears was engineer, took up the matter, visited the legislature and secured the charter for the present organization. This was the origin of the port of Portland commissioners. In 1889 Major Sears, while engaged as chief engineer of the first electric railway built in the northwest, was urged by the people of Peru to return to the region where he had made irrigation surveys and plans, a very promising concession being made him. He was also called by capitalists to England where a syndicate for the work was formed, but the plans were upset by the failure of the house of Barring Brothers, due to the repudiation by Argentina of her bonds held in England. He then recovered his concession from the English company and tried to organize a company in New York. He had just succeeded when, in August, 1894, the revolution broke out in Peru and the project was abandoned. At the request of eastern capitalists he again secured the concession in 1898 for a party who agreed to put up the necessary guarantee bond but who failed of execution. In the meantime he had expended all of his means in his devotion to an idea, suffering heavy losses in his confidence in unworthy men. He has since lived a retired life in Portland except for some activity in civic affairs. On the 29th of January, 1850, Mr. Sears was married to Miss Augusta Bassett, the youngest daughter of Paschall Bassett, of Bridgewater, Massachusetts, and descended on both sides from Puritan ancestry. Her mother traced her ancestry directly to Mary Chilton, who was the first woman to land from the Mayflower. Unto Major Sears and his wife were born three children, of whom one reached maturity, Alfred F., Jr., who became a prominent lawyer and was on the bench in Oregon when he died, in 1907. Major Sears is an honored member of various societies. He belongs to the Sons of the American Revolution, the Loyal Legion, the Grand Army of the Republic, the American Society of Civil Engineers, the National Association of Civil Engineers of Peru and is a corresponding member of the Geographical Society of Lima, Peru. One who knows Major Sears well has written of him: "He is essentially a polite man, a gentleman in all that the term implies. The real gentleman must possess a kindly nature, a heart bent upon goodness. The manners of Major Sears would adorn any station. Arnold Brown Bailey, 63, died suddenly Sunday evening in Waltham, Mass. Death was attributed to natural causes. Born in Providence, R.I., he lived here and in Concord Mass., for many years. An internationally known electrical engineer, he was educated at Lynn Classical High School, graduated from MIT in 1925 and was a pioneer at Bell Telephone Laboratories and spent the last 11 years at Lincoln Laboratories and Mitre Corporation in the Boston Area. He was the inventor of the coaxial antenna for ultra high frequencies; the author of a book on antenna systems and holder of many patents in the fields of antenna systems, propagation, and navigation; was co-inventor of the Omni-Beam method of airplane navigation; and inventor of the well-known Bailey antenna. In recognition of this work, he was made a Fellow of the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers in 1965. He was a member of the Civil Air Patrol in Massachusetts, the Richard C. MacLaurin Lodge, AF and AM, in Cambridge; and the Unitarian Church, Francestown. Member of the family include his wife, Mrs. Dorothy (Basset) Bailey; and a son, Arnold Basset Bailey, a sophomore at Bowdoin College in Maine. She was born March 23, 1929 in Homer, Louisiana, the daughter of Effie Mae White Shaw and Gill Shaw. She was preceded in death by her parents and by her loving husband and soulmate of 55 years, Woodson W. ?Bill? Bassett, Jr. She is survived by her daughter, Beverly Bassett Schaffer and husband, Archie Schaffer III, of Fayetteville; sons, Tod Bassett of Fayetteville and Woody Bassett and fiancé, Sheri Rothwell, also of Fayetteville; grandchildren, Eliot Shaw Schaffer and Corbett Clayton Bassett, both of Fayetteville; brother, John Nolyn Shaw and his wife, Marion, of De Ridder, Louisiana; and niece Marynm Shaw Martin and her husband, Herb. After the untimely death of her father when she was very young, Marynm was raised by her mother in Homer. She later attended and earned a degree in 1949 from Northwestern State University in Natchitoches, Louisiana. In 1950, while living and working in Monroe, Louisiana, she claimed the runner-up title in the Miss Louisiana contest. She married her husband Bill on December 16, 1950 and in early 1952 they moved from Monroe to Bill?s hometown of Fayetteville. She lived the rest of her life in her beloved Fayetteville where she and her husband raised their three children. After working as a medical lab technician when her children were young, she embarked on a career as an interior designer at which she excelled, eventually forming her own business known as Design and Decor by Marynm Bassett. With her natural talent and exquisite taste, coupled with her engaging personality and love of people, she flourished as a gifted interior designer and decorator, putting her unique touch on homes, offices and structures of every kind throughout Northwest Arkansas for nearly four decades. She was admired and respected by all those she worked with and worked for during her life. The quality of the projects she took on for her clients during her career stands as a shining testament to her success in her chosen field of work. She was an extraordinary person: smart with a strong work ethic, tough and courageous, loyal and reliable, friendly and funny, compassionate and good-hearted. She was a loving and caring mother and grandmother, a wonderful wife, and a cherished friend to many. March 17, 2025 Madisonville Mr. Bruce DuWan Bass, born December 20, 1963, to George Augusta Bass and Jean Hardin Bass in Madisonville, KY, peacefully went to rest with the Lord on March 17, 2025. Bruce was a graduate of Madisonville North Hopkins High School. Shortly after graduation, he enlisted in the United States Army, where he proudly served in Germany. Upon returning home, he married his first wife, Jeanne, in Lawton, Oklahoma, and together they were blessed with two children, Resha and Dominick. Bruce later joined the United States Reserves and was transferred to Albuquerque, New Mexico. After leaving the reserves, he transitioned to the civilian workforce. He eventually married Linda Pickett, who had a daughter, Lyric, whom Bruce embraced as his own. Bruce was preceded in death by his first wife, Jeanne Bass; his second wife, Linda Bass; his father, George "Dedo" Bass; and several aunts and uncles. He leaves to cherish his memory his mother, Mrs. Jean H. Bass; son Dominick D. Bass of Lawton, OK; daughter Resha J. June 2, 2024 Dr. Anna Morrow Bass passed from this life on Sunday June 2, 2024 at the Alamance Regional Medical Center in Burlington, NC. She was surrounded with family and friends. Anna was born on May 25, 1933 and celebrated her 91st birthday on May 25, 2024. She was the fifth child of Jesse L. Morrow Sr. and Cathryn Whitmore Morrow. She had eight siblings who preceded her in death, Namely; Dorothy, Ella, Herbert, Grant, Nellie, Eugene, Lucille, and JL. Anna was so preceded in death by her husband, Joel Bass. Joel and Anna had two children, Karl Orlando Bass and Karen F. Bass and a granddaughter Tabatha Lucille Bass, who survive. Others who remain to continue Anna?s legacy of love are her nieces, Shirley Watkins, Gloria Alexander, Jerina Plourd?a; her nephews, Angelo, Andre, Derrick, Hal, Patrick, Eric, Rodney Morrow, and Norris Bass; sisters in law, Alice, Laura, and Dorothy Morrow, and many other cousins, extended family, and friends. Anna received her early education in the Alamance County School System and graduated from Graham High School. She furthered her education by receiving a BA Degree from Bennett College in Greensboro, NC, graduating in 1955. Later she received a MA Degree from North Carolina Central University and her Doctorate was received from Nova University in Fort Lauderdale, FL. Anna?s first teaching job was at Melville Elementary School. After a move to Maine and Massachusetts, she returned to Graham Elementary where she later became a principal. As time passed, she was selected as an Administrator of the Federal Programs, ESEA Title One which included chapter 1, The Migrant Program as well as other programs and (NCAE) North Carolina Association of Educators. Anna was also Adjunct Professor at Elon University as well as being involved in numerous regional and national organizations. She served on the Board of Education for the Alamance County School System, Board at Twin Lakes, as well as the Alamance County Community College Board. At a very early age, Anna joined Bethsada Baptist Church where she served faithfully in many facets of the Church. She was active until her health no longer permitted her to do so. A funeral service will be held at 2:00 PM on Sunday June 9, 2024 at the McClure Funeral Home Chapel in Mebane with the Chaplain David Morrow officiating. Bass, 64-year-old father of Mrs. Henry L. Brown, of east of Summit, were held in Pleasant Hill church, near Pinola, at 3 p. m. Friday. Burial was in Buckley-Armstrong cemetery, at Bridgeport community, also near Pinola. The Rev. Phillips, of New Hebron, conducted the services and was assisted by the Rev. B. Frank Smith. Mr. Bass died at his home in Pinola, Simpson county, Thursday noon. Although Mr. Bass had been in ill health for two years, suffering from arthritis from which he appeared to be recovering, the immediate cause of his unexpected death was a heart attack. Born on November 7, 1933 in Sandown, NH, William was one of 16 children of the late Raymond and Priscilla (Knights) Bassett. For two years he proudly served his country in the United States Army. He graduated from Sandown High School and received a Bachelor?s degree from Rochester Institute of Technology. On July 26, 1957 he married the former Elizabeth Pamela Harney. He was an engineer for Freudenberg-NOK retiring in January of 1994. After retirement they lived in Hilton Head, SC and in 2005 they moved to Lake Oconee, Greensboro, GA. He enjoyed his retirement playing golf, cards and hunting. William was a wonderful husband, father, grandfather, brother and will truly be missed by his family and friends. William is survived by his wife of 65 years, Elizabeth Pamela Harney Bassett of Greensboro, one son, Bill Bassett, Jr. and his wife Teresa of Jacksonville, FL, one daughter, Sally Fox and her husband Steve of Lexington, SC; four grandchildren, Kristi Fox, Michael Fox (Brittany), Amanda Bassett and Mitchell Bassett; two great grandchildren, Lily Fox and Lindsey Fox; five brothers, Donald Bassett of Northwood, NH, Kenneth Bassett of Sandown, NH, David Bassett of Hampstead, NH, Wendell Bassett of Epsom, NH, and Carroll Bassett of Sandown, NH. There are also many nieces, nephews, and cousins. He was predeceased by ten siblings, Hazel Marlow, Charles Bassett, Raymond S. Polly was born on October 4, 1936, in Ashland City, Tennessee to the late Pleasant Green Meadows and Ora Lee Toler. A strong-willed and independent woman, Polly was a firecracker who always told it like it was. Even in her honesty, she was kind and loving. She loved her family fiercely and enjoyed any memories that could be made with them, from her children down to her great-great-grandchildren. Polly's career journey was as diverse as her interests. Her dedication to Robins Air Force Base spanned over a decade in Civil Service, a testament to her commitment and work ethic. She also nurtured her passion for flowers during her time at a local family-owned flower shop, where her green thumb and love for gardening blossomed. Notably, Polly's fascination with birds led her to raise majestic peacocks, adding color and joy to her life. In her free time, she enjoyed her quiet time, using it to sew or faithfully read her Bible. Her sweet countenance will be deeply missed by all those who had the pleasure of knowing her. In addition to her parents, Polly was preceded in death by her children, Bonnie Bassett and Eric Bassett, grandson, Grant Cooper, and siblings, Pleasant Meadows, Jr. and Nancy McCullough. Eleanor was born on September 21, 1937, in Mendon to Ione Buist and Wilford Larsen. Lewis and Eleanor were married on November 20, 1959, in the Logan Temple. Bassett, 73, of Kinmundy, passed away at 3:20 p.m. Saturday, February 19, 2022 at the SSM Health Good Samaritan Hospital in Mt. Vernon. Georgetta was born on March 25, 1948, in Effingham, the daughter of Ralph and Henrietta (Barber) Reynolds. She married Robert C. Bassett, on September 13, 1992, in Kinmundy, and they shared 29 years of marriage. She worked as a clerk at the IGA in Kinmundy, and Brown?s Produce in Farina for several years. Etta was a very good cook, and loved all animals but she especially loved horses, and she loved to raise a garden. Georgetta is survived by her husband; Robert C. Bassett, of Kinmundy, her 4 siblings; Rita Reynolds, of Kinmundy, Georganna (Willi) Hawkey, of Kinmundy, Doyle (Adrienne) Reynolds, of Idaho, Doyne (Linda Schicker) Reynolds, of Kinmundy, and several nieces, nephews, and good friends. January 26, 2025 Brent Fuller Bass, born April 12, 1966, to Horace Eugene Bass and Jane Hamby Bass, passed away peacefully on January 26, 2025, at the age of 58. A devoted husband, father, brother, and public servant, Brent's life was a shining example of dedication, love, and service to his family, community, and faith. Brent was married to the love of his life, Elizabeth Hanson Bass, for 35 wonderful years. Together, they built a beautiful life and were blessed with their cherished son, Austin Tyler Bass. Brent was a beloved brother to Blake (Lila) Bass, Mark (Alice) Bass, sister Amanda Pettite, loving aunt Loretta Hamby all of Newnan, Georgia, and in-laws Parker and Rebecca Peaden Hanson of Grantville, Georgia. He was preceded in death by his father, Horace Bass; maternal grandparents, William Reginald and Opal Fuller Hamby; paternal grandparents, William David and Zelma Johnson Bass; and brother-in-law, Boyd K. Pettite. His memory will live on in the hearts of his family, friends, and all who knew him. Brent was an avid sportsman at Newnan High School. He lettered three years in football and was named to the North-South All Star Team his senior year. He earned a scholarship to Georgia Southern University playing for the legendary Coach Erk Russell. His freshman year Georgia Southern won its first national championship and Brent was immensely proud of his national championship ring. Brent served his community faithfully for 26 years as a member of the Coweta County Sheriff's Office. Rising to the rank of Lieutenant, he served as a shift commander and was respected for his leadership, professionalism, and commitment to justice. Funeral services to celebrate Brent's life will be held on January 29, 2025, at 3:00 PM in the chapel of McKoon Funeral Home, 38 Jackson Street, in Newnan, with Rev. Mike Emeott officiating.
