Born near Milwaukee, WI on Aug 13, 1934, Vicki served in the US Army during the Korean War. Following the war, she married Roger Stuart Bass at Milwaukee's Unity Lutheran Church in June, 1954. She raised a family of three children, worked in a number of firms as an executive assistant, and returned to college as a Grandmother, studying Mathematics. As a pianist, she shared an infectious love for music and the theater arts. She loved to travel and enjoyed the discovery of new things. She inspired her children to develop a love of learning and was as comfortable discussing new computer technologies as she was in delving into the finer points of philosophy. A ready listener, sought-after for her common sense and sound spiritual grounding, Vicki loved deeply and was deeply loved by everyone who came into her world. She will be greatly missed by all. Vicki is survived by her three children and their families, Roger and Candy and their daughter Catherine; Jeffery and Lisa; and Cynthia and her two sons, Robert and Jeffery. Interment will be at the Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery on Tuesday, 30 Mar at 10:45 AM. Rodman entered the Navy May 6, 1895, and was retired in December, 1941. he had held the rank of captain since October 4, 1925. | 2303 | San Diego Union, California, Tuesday, January 7, 1969 Voigtlander Dies, Retired Army Colonel (Includes Picture) Karl von Voigtlander, Borrego Springs civic leader and a retired Army colonel whose career spanned 31 years, died Sunday night in Naval Hospital. He was 58. Military graveside services for Von Boigtlander will be at 11 a.m. Friday in Greenwood Memorial Park. Cremation is planned. During his long military career, Von Voigtlander saw action in World War II and the Korean conflict. He also served in the Pentagon as chief of special projects under the Chief of Information. As a civic leader, Von Voigtlander served the desert community of Borrego Springs in many capacities, including president of the Lions Club and Chamber of Commerce. Von Voigtlander was a native of New Jersey and was graduated from Michigan State University. He began his military career in 1931, as a second lieutenant. From 1935 to 1937, Von Voigtlander served with the Civilian Conservation Corps under the auspices of the Army. During World War II, he fought with the 4th Armored Division and was executive officer of the 771st Tank Battalion, both in the European theater of war. During the Korean War, Von Voigtlander was with the 5th Cavalry regiment, until he was wounded severely and returned to Japan for hospitalization. Von Voigtlander is survived by his widow, Lois; two daughters, including Mrs. Marta Belisle of San Diego; a brother, and five grandchildren. | Voigtlander, Karl von (I36033)

Betty was born Elizabeth Bertha Bassett on June 13, 1921 in Chicago, Illinois to George and Bertha Bassett, both deceased. She was a resident of San Diego County for over 65 years. Betty worked as a civil service employee for the united State Marine Corps as a medical clerk; she retired in 1927 after 30 years of employment. In 1973, Betty went to work for Cloister?s of Mission Hills and retired from there after 22 years of employment. She loved animals and was a longtime member of the San Diego Human Society and S.P.C.A. and the Sn Diego Zoological Society. Distant relatives and many friends will miss Betty. Born in Frankfurt, Germany on June 27, 1928, Hans immigrated with his family to the United States in 1936. A graduate of Harvard College (A.B. 1949), with a B. Phil. in Economics from Oxford University, and an MBA from Harvard Business School, Hans established himself as an integral part of the business and civic community, eventually receiving the Palo Alto Tall Tree (1987), Lifetimes of Achievement (1998) and The Thomas W. Ford (2002) awards for his community volunteer activities and philanthropic contributions. He began his business career with 20 years at Texas Instruments followed by 18 years in the pharmaceutical industry with Syntex Corporation retiring as Vice Chairman. His example of integrity, generosity and wisdom served to inspire many people. After his retirement in 1993, Hans enjoyed a combination of corporate board work, community volunteer activities and travel. His work on humanitarian and community causes motivated others to become involved where they, too, felt they could make a difference. Hans' enduring legacy is to be remembered as someone who made communities better and lives richer in a multitude of ways. Hans was a friend and mentor to many. Known for his quick wit and sound advice, he will be remembered as one who could be counted on for both encouragement and honest evaluation. His gentle, caring interest was conveyed in his voice and in his thoughtful and thought-provoking remarks. A beloved husband, father and grandfather, Hans helped to shape a family known for its love and care of each other, while also welcoming others from around the world into the family with equal parts respect and affection. His example of unconditional love and spiritual values were visible to all. He lived in an honest, admirable way, and was continually sensitive to and concerned for others. Survived by his wife, Elizabeth (Bassett) Wolf; their four children; Heidi, her partner Jeff Meyer; Rebecca; Deborah, her husband, Keith Streeter and their daughters Megan and Molly; and Andrew, his wife Drewry and their sons Alexander and Spencer. He is also survived by his father, Dr. Franz B. Wolf; his siblings, Dorothy (Wolf) Ettlinger and Robert Wolf, and their families. | 2308 | San Marcos Daily Record, Texas, 10 march 2025 Carlton Bass Carlton Daves (Davey) Bass passed away on Friday, February 28, 2025, at the age of 72. He was born and raised in San Marcos, Texas. He was preceded in death by his father Horace D. Bass, his mother Ruby Dean (Baker) Bass and his older sister, Diana Bass. Davey graduated from San Marcos High School in 1970. He also attended Southwest Texas State University where he was an active member of the SWT Rodeo Club. Davey worked many years for Thermon and traveled to 16 different countries, making numerous friends along the way. Davey was a proud member of the National Guard and a decorated member of the National Rifle Association, having received several awards for his contribution. He hunted and fished in North America and South Americas. He also worked with Ducks Unlimited in conservation efforts and was a member of the Coastal Conservation Association. He is survived by many loving friends and will be missed dearly by all who knew him. We would like to give special thanks to Jerry Garrett and the Christopher House Hospice team for their compassionate and exceptional care. She was preceded in death by her loving husband of 31 years, R. Clair Robinson. Born January 6, 1938, she was a daughter of the late Charles W. Bassett and Sarah F. (Marquette) Hall and step daughter of Arthur Monroe Hall. A woman of strong and deep faith, she was a member of Covenant-Central Presbyterian Church and often ministered to others. She loved music and learned to play the organ, piano, clarinet and was a member of the New Horizons Band. She found great comfort in the surroundings of her home, creating and appreciating the simple things in life. She often spent time outdoors bird watching, feeding the wildlife in her backyard, watching the squirrels, or finding delight tending to her flower beds and yard. Barb was an outstanding cook and baker who loved spending time in the kitchen. She is survived by five children, Steven Leidhecker (Patty) of Cogan Station, Robert "Bobby" Leidhecker (Aegina) of Williamsport, Brian Robinson (Sandy) of Fivepointville, Brent Robinson (Nancy) of Easton, and Brenda Frontz (Dave) of Allenwood; a brother, Mike Bassett (LeRay) of Brunswick, ME; 13 grandchildren; and numerous great-grandchildren, nieces, and nephews. Bass, 39, city employe who died earlier this week from cuases believed directly connected with wounds suffered as a marine in World War II. Bass, who came here from Montery Park two years ago as an inspector-engineer with the engineering department, was there on a two-week leave of absence to consult his physician. Friends said Bass? condiction, for which he received a government disability pension, had worsened in recent months. | 2312 | Santa Maria Times, California, 17 June 2023 Jeffrey Tom Bassett 1961 - 2023 It is with great sadness that the family of Jeffrey Tom Bassett age 61 years old passed away peacefully in his home on May 11, 2023. Jeff was raised in Santa Maria, attending local schools and graduated from Righetti High School. At the age of 18 years old he joined the Local Brick Layers Union Allied Craftsman of American Local #4. Jeff worked for his Dad (Benny Bassett) for many years and that is where he learned his trade as a bricklayer. Jeff traveled to other areas of California and helped build shopping centers. And later on, to Hawaii to carry out his trade. Jeff was a loyal member of Pacific Christian Church where he served a lot of years their worshiping the Lord. And he devoted his free time building a bar-b-que pit for the church and much more. At one time he had the opportunity to go be a missionary in Honduras. He was an avid ocean fisherman and enjoyed his annual vacation to Florida. Jeff was a very kind, sincere person. He would do anything to help others out. He had many friends, old and new and meeting someone new every day. He also loved getting to know his nieces and nephews and loved to play jokes on all of them, Jeff was known for his addiction of going to every thrift store he could fine and the same with garage and estate sales. He would be so happy to drive by and show his findings too. Jeff's greatest joy in life was his two daughters, Carissa and Casey. He was most recently blessed with his first grandchild, Jack. He had aspirations of spending a beautiful future with him. Jeff is survived by his daughter, Carissa Bassett, Casey Kolouch (Jonny) and his precious grandson, Jack Kolouch. He leaves behind his four siblings, Danny Bassett (Judy), Larry Bassett (Sandie), Jeannie Bassett-Lambert, and Timothy Bassett. As well as numerous nieces and nephews. Jeff was proceeded in death by his parents Benny Bassett and Geraldine (Jerri) Bennett. Jeff will be missed by so many. | 2314 | Sarasota Herald-Tribune, Florida, 18 November 2022 Mary Mockler Newfeld Mary Mockler Neufeld, 96, formerly of Illinois, Longboat Key, Sarasota and then Bradenton, passed away on November 14, 2022. She was preceded in death by her husband of 70 years, Richard S. Neufeld. Mrs. Neufeld is survived by her five children: Anne Neufeld Rutz (Daniel), Richard R. Neufeld, Douglas Neufeld (Barbara), David Neufeld (Lisa) and Donald Neufeld, fifteen grandchildren and eleven great-grandchildren. Mrs. Neufeld graduated in 1948 from Mundelein College in Chicago. She and her husband lived for many years in the Chicago suburb of Homewood, where they raised their five children. Mrs. Neufeld was a homemaker and spent hours volunteering at her children?s schools, at their sports activities and at her church. She was a lifelong, faithful Catholic. When her children were grown, Mrs. Neufeld volunteered as a docent with the Chicago Architecture Foundation and she and her husband enjoyed attending the Sarasota Opera productions and took some memorable opera trips to Europe. She particularly enjoyed the game of golf and she competed on ladies? teams with the Lincolnshire Country Club of Crete, Illinois. When the couple moved to Florida,they joined the Sara Bay Country Club in Sarasota, where she was once named Woman Golfer of the Year. She had three holes-in-one to her credit over some sixty years of golfing! A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 9:30AM, Monday, November 28, at Saints Peter & Paul the Apostles Catholic Church, 2850 75th St. West, Bradenton, followed by inurnment in the Church Memorial Garden. | 2315 | Saskatoon StarPhoenix, 12 Oct 2010 Anita Cochrane (Picture included) Cochrane, Anita Lynn (nee Bassett) Born at Jonquiere, Quebec on 15 June 1971; Passed away after a courageous battle with cancer at Burnaby, BC on October 5th, 2010. Anita was predeceased by her grandparents: Dorothy and George McHenry and Irene and Herb Bassett. She is survived by her husband, Mike Cochrane, her parents Mona and Ted Bassett , her brother Paul, her father-in-law John Cochrane, her brother-in law Ted Cochrane and her many hundreds of friends. After obtaining her Commerce degree at the University of Saskatchewan, Anita moved to Prince George to prepare for her Chartered Accountancy. This is where she met Mike, the perfect husband for her. After gaining accreditation as a Charter Accountant, she followed Mike to Vancouver where they married in 2001 and biked across Canada for their honeymoon. It was shortly after that Anita was diagnosed with breast cancer. That did not stop her from living life to the fullest. She continued to practice her profession as Controller at Sun Rich Fresh Foods, was a dedicated fund raiser for the BC Cancer Foundation and a competitive curler. Anita's favourite fundraising event was The Weekend to End Breast Cancer. She founded Team LiveStrong. As an active member of the Royal City Curling Club, she was on the team that represented BC in the national mixed curling championships in 2008 where she was named the most sportsmanlike player. Unable to continue playing she started coaching and took ladies and junior girls teams to the provincials in 2009. Anita was named the BC Curling Coach of the Year for 2010. She also coached the Australian Senior Men's team to a bronze medal at the world championships in 2010. Anita also loved her time at Candle Lake and Birkenhead Lake. Anita had a magical personality that inspired everyone she met. We'll all miss her beautiful smile and laugh, her warm presence, and her openness. Anita made the world a better place, and she'll be in our hearts forever. She was born March 21, 1928 in Ogle County, to Daniel G. and Libbie (Pettenger) Raymond, of Forreston. She attended Polo Schools. Roberta married Everett D. Bass February 26, 1946. He preceded her in death on November 14, 1981. She was employed by G. E. in Morrison, retiring in March 1990 after almost 29 years and was a member of the former Evangelical Congregational Church, where she served in many capacities. She volunteered at the F.I.S.H. Food Pantry from 1990 until 2018. She enjoyed embroidery, and made many crib blankets for family, friends and the Hope Pregnancy Center. Mr. Edwin Louis Bass was born July 13, 1928 in Prentiss, MS. He was the son of Ray Vaughn Bass and Mary Jane Harvey Bass. He worked for Southern Natural Gas Company and retired as Assistant District Supervisor after thirty seven years. He was a veteran of the US Army. May 29, 2025 A long-time resident of Jackson, MS, Rick Bass (Ross Frederick Bass, Jr.) died peacefully surrounded by his loving family on May 29, 2025, at Atria Memory Care in Katy, Texas, where he had resided for a year and a half to be closer to family following a stroke in February 2023. Many of Rick?s dear Jackson-area friends and extended family kept in touch with visits and phone calls since his stroke and during a recent sudden decline. Rick enjoyed the conversations with and stimulation from these loving people. To the end, his stated goal was to work with the physical therapists, return home to Jackson, and play tennis. Throughout Rick?s recovery, his winsome personality and stoic perseverance never faded. No one who knows him would be surprised to learn that he was a favorite of the Atria staff, many of whom called him ?Dad,? taking after daughter Bonnie who regularly visited or called every day. The family wishes to thank the kind-hearted and capable staff of Atria who took such good care of Rick. The first of three children born to Betty Jo Holcomb Bass and Ross F. Bass, M.D., Rick was born in Jackson on August 14, 1946. In his early childhood, Rick?s father?s medical training and naval duties took the young family to tiny Baldwyn, MS, where Rick learned to walk, followed by exciting New Orleans, where Rick remembered riding the St. Charles streetcar daily and learning to read with his mother in the library, and then northward to Falls Church, VA, where he started first grade and visited Washington, D.C., frequently with his parents and 2 year-old brother, Robert. Rick?s enduring interest in history began here. The Bass family finally settled back in familiar Jackson, a city Rick ever after fondly regarded as home. He received a good education and sports training in the Jackson Public Schools he attended: Power, Boyd, Bailey, and Murrah, Class of 1964. He moved through these youthful and delightful Buckley Drive years with a pack of friends from the neighborhood, with Little League baseball team members, and football team friends. In fact, Rick made friends for life in each stage of his maturation and eagerly participated in any and all reunions. Inherent fortitude, humor, stamina, and resilience equipped Rick both to survive and thrive after any hardships in his life. He accumulated many memories of comical situations in which he found himself. These he recounted with self-deprecating good humor to the delight of all. At age six, Rick contracted polio. While he recuperated in quarantine, isolated in the boys' ward of a Vicksburg sanatorium for several months, he delighted in his medical father's permitted weekly visits when he brought Rick enough decks of cards, comic books, crossword puzzles, adventure and mystery magazines to share. Ever after, Rick read a variety of genres, daily solved word and math puzzles, learned to count cards, and honed his strategic thinking abilities, all of which served him well in Tournament Bridge, football, baseball, soccer, golf, tennis, pickleball, and, more profitably, in his legal profession. Rick attended Vanderbilt for two years where he majored in pre-med until, as he said, ?I ran into organic chemistry.? He switched to a double major in English and history, accepted a baseball scholarship from Belhaven, and graduated with distinction. While a student, he worked at Person?s, a men?s clothing store, and developed a good head for both business and fashion under Mr. Person?s tutelage. He became a dapper dresser who looked made for a corner office. After college, Rick served as an officer in the medical corps of the National Guard, an experience that funded amusing memories he liked to recount. He married fellow Belhaven graduate, Janie Shiel, in 1969, and welcomed his oldest daughter, Susan, into his life. His young family then moved to Oxford, MS, where he entered Ole Miss law school and embarked on a distinguished career. Rick excelled in the study of law. Always admired by his peers for the keen facility of his legal mind, he became editor-in-chief of the law journal and graduated with distinction, earning his J.D. in 1973. He credited Susan and Janie for keeping him focused. As this chapter of his life closed they happily welcomed into the family a son, Rick, Ross Frederick Bass, III. Rick then became one of the first Ole Miss law graduates to be recruited by a major out-of-state law firm. He took a position with the prominent Gambrell firm in Atlanta and passed the Georgia bar exam on his first attempt. During these formative years in Atlanta, Rick honed his well-known skills as a top commercial litigator. He devised strategies for managing complex business disputes. The pull of home brought the family back to Jackson in 1975, in time for the happy birth of his third and youngest child, Bonnie. Rick joined the litigation section of the Watkins Ludlam firm, where he became a partner and developed a robust practice. In 1981, Rick, Bill Jones, and David Mockbee formed the highly regarded litigation boutique firm, Jones Mockbee and Bass, and it grew until it became the Jackson office of the respected New Orleans firm, Phelps Dunbar. Rick rose to be a member of the firm?s board of directors and the managing partner of the Jackson office. Only someone of superior ability and congenial disposition could occupy these positions as long as he did. Rick lived by the adage he coined himself, "Worry more and be a better lawyer." One would never have known it judging from his unflappable demeanor under fire. Always a spirited competitor, Rick was driven to win. Ever the good sportsman, however, he never fell short of perfect civility. He always played by the rules with genuine honesty, integrity, and a sense of fairness that won the respect of clients, colleagues, judges, employees, and even defeated opposing counsel. He generously devoted time to pro bono work and to teaching trial practice to generations of younger lawyers from many states. He was a quietly spiritual and compassionate man who, like his forebearers, strongly valued the inherent dignity of every human being. Rick led an exciting life, full of adventures of ideas and experiences, family, friends, wit and humor, and a penchant for an Old Fashioned. He?s probably the only guy one will find who, as an 18-year-old, met Elvis on tour in Elvis?s hotel room, who as a college student played bridge with Omar Shariff as his partner, or who as a newly minted lawyer traveled to Denmark and the West Indies to litigate a peanut case. In his family life, Rick enjoyed coaching his children?s sports teams and patiently teaching his children and their friends to water ski. Many wonderful family memories were made during the traditional summer stays at Pickwick Lake having fun and good cheer with the extended family and the other Jackson families at J.P. Coleman State Park. Rick took great pleasure in moving closer to his three grandchildren, three children and their spouses. He championed their interests and achievements and felt that life was good. Nearly daily Rick dressed in his Ole Miss Rebel cap or shirt during his Katy, Texas, residence. A team loyalty he developed early in his life he attributed to his surviving maternal uncle, Ed Holcomb, that continues with his son Rick, cousin Bill Holcomb, son-in-law Joey Austin, and Rick?s nephew, Ross Cleveland Bass. Rick?s beloved brother, Robert, predeceased him by fewer than three years. November 15, 2021 Charles David Bassett, 94, of Boone, Iowa passed away peacefully on Monday, November 15, 2021, at Westhaven Community in Boone, Iowa. Chuck was born on April 21, 1927, in Colfax Township, Boone County, Iowa, the son of Orville (Stub) and Margaret Snider Bassett. He grew up on the family farm just west of Napier, attended Napier School, graduating in 1945. Chuck had joined the Army in the fall of 1944, and after graduation, he went to Fort Hood, Temple, Texas for basic training. Ruby Brown, his high school sweetheart joined him, and the two were united in marriage on July 28, 1945. He shipped out shortly after spending his WWII service stationed at Dachau Concentration Camp, Munich, Germany, until October 1946. Chuck returned home planning to attend Iowa State Veterinarian school, but he found the family farm in need and took up farming. He was a serious young farmer, taking farming classes, always reading, learning, how to become a better farmer. He and his brother, Fritz Bassett, farmed in partnership for 30 years, buying land and adding a cow and calf operation. He and Ruby were the proud parents of five children, Marcia, Jackie, David, Joanie, and Sandy. All working the farm, raising cattle, and, unknowingly, learning the value of the land and the hard work it takes to keep it. They knew ?he had their backs? even when he made them take their lumps in life. Due to health issues, Chuck retired early, but he always loved his land. He was always looking for another ?40? and was a farmer at heart forever. Warm weather helped his health issues and ?to get farther from the North Pole,? they moved to south Texas. They settled into a mobile home on Falcon Lake. It was dry high desert, but he tilled and planted a grass lawn with a sprinkler system. He planted grapefruit and tangerine trees, date palms, flowering vines, and petunia. He learned the art of stained glass, making fishing lures and sinkers. He and Ruby moved back to Iowa, building a home on the Napier blacktop, where he planted trees, mowed grass, and enjoyed life on the farm again. Chuck and Ruby enjoyed traveling in their 5th wheel camper, driving the Alaskan Highway, a trip to Australia and New Zealand, and visiting friends and family across the country. Ruby said he would not drive past a Historical marker without stopping. His favorite pastime was country western dancing. He and Ruby danced all their lives, planning their week on which band to attend, they made many good friends. They danced well into their late eighties, albeit a little slower, but with the same enthusiasm. Chuck never met a stranger, always smiling, shaking their hand, and ready with his quick wit to make you welcome. He lived a full and happy life, loving and loved by his family. He and Ruby were married 74 years, giving each other a kiss, a smile, and a hard time. He has missed her immensely these last two years and was ready to swing her onto the dance floor when he said goodbye to this world. Charles was preceded in death by his wife Ruby, a grandson, Nate Bassett, and brother, Richard Bassett at an early age. Jane was born on April 7, 1932, in Boone, Iowa, to Edward and Louise (Tonsfeldt) Shell. She grew up on a farm west of Boone alongside her siblings Verdine, Iola, Mary Lou, Mahlon, Leland, Fran, Karen, and Joyce, as well as infant siblings Emma and John, who passed shortly after birth. Jane was baptized at Trinity Lutheran Church in Boone on May 22, 1932, and confirmed on April 10, 1949. She graduated from Boone High School in 1950. Jane worked at Boyd?s Dairy and then Nelson?s Lumber Yard, which later became Nelson?s Doo It Store, and then at Herrald Drug, which became Medicap Pharmacy. She enjoyed her years as a store clerk and cherished the opportunity to connect with so many in the Boone community. On December 17, 1952, Jane married Jack Bass. Together, they raised five children in Boone: Joan, Janine, Chris, Matt, and Chad. Jane really enjoyed their annual vacations to northern Minnesota, and later, many memories were created at the family?s cabin on Palmer Lake with their children and grandchildren. Jane loved baking and had a sweet tooth. You could always count on multiple pies or a selection of cookies when you came to visit. Her legacy of delicious treats lives on with her handwritten recipes that have been passed down to her family. She also enjoyed cooking, reading, poetry, watching Wheel of Fortune and Antiques Roadshow, and spending time with her grandchildren. Jane is survived by her children, Joan Faust, Janine (Ben) Bennett, Chris Bass, Matt Bass, and Chad (Jill) Bass; her grandchildren, Mike (Alison) Faust, Megan (Matt) Rigg, Kelli (Justus) Harris, Sam Bass, and Wendy Bass; and her great-grandchildren, Will and Max Faust, Forrest Rigg, and Liv and Leo Harris. He was a loving brother to Anna Bass Holland (Lane) and Christopher Cole Bass (Hailey). He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Lloyd Bass, Sr. and Mary Bell Bass, Reginald A. Robinson and Sarah H. Robinson, and his brother, Market Emery Bass. Bo was the devoted husband of Rose G. Bass and a proud, loving father to Lloyd ?Cy? Bass, IV; Mya Bass; Matthew Bass; Layla Bass; Dylan Sandifer; Brittany Saiyan; and Jeremy Bertrand. He was also a loved Paw Paw to his grandchildren. His life centered around his family, and he lived each day in service to them, providing love, guidance, and unwavering support. A gentle giver with a humble spirit, Bo was known for his kindness and willingness to help others. He grew up with a deep love for baseball and excelled as a pitcher for Walker High School, the Home Run Palace baseball team, and later at the collegiate level. Beyond the field, he loved the outdoors and found peace in the little things in life. Professionally, Bo worked for more than 20 years as a Master Classman Water Restoration Specialist in the environmental industry, a career that reflected his strong work ethic and commitment to doing difficult work with care and dedication. He often worked extra jobs to provide the best life he could for his family. He was a mechanic and fixer, he'd take the old broken down things and give them life again. Humbly, Bo loved the Lord. His faith sustained him through the hardest seasons of his life and was a steady source of hope, strength, and peace. We hope his quiet trust in God will leave a lasting example for all who knew him. While attending Ohio State University, is father was transferred to Seattle; he helped hi parents move here and never left the Northwest. He had a lifelong career in the hotel business which started during the Depression with the job of night clerk at the Benjamin Franklin Hotel in Seattle. In 1971 he became President of the West hotel chain and was Vice Chairman of the Board at the time of his retirement. He enjoyed golf and sailing and was a member of the Seattle Yacht Club. Bass, Jr., 79, passed away on Friday, July 18, 2025 at Kitty Askins Hospice Center. Born in Lenoir County on January 30, 1946, he was raised in the Snow Hill area of Greene County, he was the son of the late Joseph Edward, Sr. and Ruby Chase Bass. J.E. is survived by his beloved wife of 60 years, Jean Daniels Bass; children, Brian Bass, Greg Bass, and Dawn Bass; brothers, Jerry Bass (Cathy), Ronald Bass (Ernestine), and Donald Bass (Vicky); and several nieces and nephews. J.E. began his working life at Sears, followed by a tenure with Carolina Power & Light (CP&L). But it was at Wayne Community College where he truly found his calling. For over 32 years, he served as an instructor in the Refrigeration and Heating & Air program, where he mentored generations of students. Known for his steady guidance, practical wisdom, and unwavering support, J.E. was more than an educator-he was a lifelong advocate for his students' success and growth, both in their careers and in their lives. Outside the classroom, J.E. found joy in simple and meaningful pursuits. He had a deep affection for Farmall tractors, often spending time tinkering, restoring, and sharing stories about them with friends and family. His love for these iconic machines reflected his character-strong, dependable, and rooted in tradition. Above all, J.E. was devoted to his family. His love for them was the cornerstone of his life, expressed through quiet strength, heartfelt support, and countless moments of laughter, hard work, and care. A graveside service to celebrate J.E.'s life will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, July 23, 2025 at Wayne Memorial Park with Chaplain Aaron Bissette officiating. The family will receive friends following the service at the cemetery. June 14, 2025 Middleton, Tennessee Martin Bass, a dedicated licensed insurance agent with Woodmen of the World for over 30 years, passed away on June 14, 2025, at his residence in Middleton, Tennessee. Born on October 26, 1954, in Middleton, Martin was a lifelong resident of the community he cherished. He also had a career as a loan officer with the Bank of Bolivar, demonstrating a commitment to both his profession and the people he served throughout his career. An avid coin collector, Martin found joy in the detailed artistry of coins, a hobby that reflected his appreciation for history and craftsmanship. He also enjoyed hunting, relishing the time spent outdoors, as well as mowing the grass, a simple task that brought him peace and satisfaction. Martin was a member of Porters Creek Baptist Church and had previously been an active member of the Jaycees, contributing to community efforts and building lasting friendships. He is survived by his daughter, Christa Tull of Middleton; his son, Eric Seaton and Stacy of Bolivar; his brother, Jerome Bass of Middleton; and his cherished grandchildren: Sawyer Tull, Riley Seaton, Katie Boothe, Jack Simpson, Emilee, and Luke Redmon. Martin was preceded in death by his parents, James Eldon Bass and Sadie Ruth Harrison Bass; his beloved wife, Glenda Ervin Bass; and his daughter, Aimee Redmon. He leaves behind a legacy of compassion, commitment, and community service that will be remembered fondly by all who knew him. Visitation will be held on June 20, 2025, from 9:00 AM to 11:00 AM at Shackelford Funeral Directors in Bolivar, followed by a funeral service at 11:00 AM. Funeral service will be held Tuesday, August 22, 2023 at 2 p.m. in the chapel of Shackleford-Howell Funeral Home in Fremont. Burial will follow at Eureka Cemetery. The family will receive friends prior to the service from 1 until 1:45 p.m. at the funeral home. Randy was born in Wayne County on November 22, 1949 to the late Lanace William ?Dick? Bass and Helen ?Marie? Bass. Randy was a veteran of the United States Army with the 42nd Airborne at Fort Bragg. He served as past mayor of Eureka and retired after thirty-six years of service from Bridgestone/Firestone. He was an avid baseball player that could play any position and once pitched a perfect ballgame. He leaves to cherish his memories his wife, Rachel Snipes Bass; one son, William Brian Bass of Eureka; one sister, Gale Bass Pate and husband, Leland Kimble Pate of Fremont; his beloved dog, Annabel and a host of other relatives and friends. | 2350 | Shelbyville Daily Democrat, November 3, 1904 Aged Man Injured Oliver Bassett, aged eighty years, of Marion township, experienced a rather severe hardship for a man of his age on Monday. He was assisting in hauling in some corn from the field and was riding on the wagon with one of the hands. When they approached the gate he jumped from the wagon and opened the gate. After the wagon had passed through and he had closed the gate, he shouted to the driver to go ahead. Like he had always done in younger years, he started to jump on the side of the wagon and slipping fell under the wheels which passed over his left lower limb from the hip to near his ankle without breaking his leg or injuring him other than to cut a gash some six inches in length on his ?shin?. Dr. J. B. Stewart attended his injuries and he will probably not suffer any serious effects. Shelbyville Daily Democrat, July 26, 1906 Death of Oliver C. Bassett Well-Known Citizen Passes Away Thursday Shortly After Noon. Oliver C. Bassett died at his home in Marion township, this afternoon, shortly after twelve o?clock, aged eighty-two years. Mr. Bassett was born in Marion township. He was one of ten children born to Mr. and Mrs. Nimphus Bassett and was the last of that family. He has always resided in Marion township and was one of the best known people in Shelby county. Several years ago he became troubled with a cancer on his face near his nose. This did not give him much trouble until about three or four years ago. For the past few months he has been a great sufferer from his affliction, which finally resulted in his death. Mr. Bassett was the owner of considerable farming land in the county, which he accumulated by strict attention to business. In politics he was a staunch republican. Surviving him is a widow and five children, namely; Nancy Jane Bowman, John Bassett, James K. Bassett, Marshall Bassett and Mrs. Lee Carrithers. Arrangements for the funeral services have not, as yet, been made. Shelbyville Democrat, January 3, 1910 Bassett Family Reunion Held ON New Year?s Day Children and Grandchildren Met at the Home of Mrs. Elizabeth Bassett On New Year?s Day of 1849 on the bluff overlooking big Blue river near the present site of the Marion bridge, there were united in marriage Oliver C. Bassett and Elizabeth Monroney. They purchased a small tract of land, built their cabin, cleared the land and for over fifty-six years, or until the death of Mr. Bassett five years ago, lived together on the same land. These old pioneers reared a large family, five of whom are still living. They are Mrs. N.J. Bowman, of Anderson, Ind.; John R. of Van Buren township; James K. and Marshall, of Marion township, and Mrs. L.B. Carrithers, of this city. It has been the custom of this family to gather around the parental board each New Year?s day and help the old folks remember the event of 1849. Each year is looked forward to by children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren as the one day of the year ? a home coming. Last Saturday was no exception to the event as on that day all of them to the number of fifty gathered at the old homestead two and one-half miles north of this city to wish each a Happy New Year, talk of the events of the year, and to enjoy the feast they knew was sure to await them. Just before the happy gathering separated to their homes and as a fitting finish to the joyous day, Mrs. Bassett presented each of her children a check for $114, at the same time wishing them all a Prosperous and Happy New York.
