| 2351 | Shelbyville Eagle, Illinois, Thursday, 12 February 2026 Annette Bassett, 76, Shelbyville, passes away February 6 It is with great sadness that the family announces the passing of Annette Bassett, 76, of Shelbyville IL. Annette passed away at 4:42 pm Friday, February 6, 2026, in her home surrounded by family. Annette graduated high school from Peoria IL. She attended college at Illinois State University in Bloomington IL. Annette married Larry Brantley in the spring of 1969 and was blessed with two daughters. In 1974, she was recognized as one of the first women coal miners in the state of Illinois. Annette went on to marry Rodger Bassett in the winter of 1974 and was blessed again with a son. Throughout their life together, they enjoyed the outdoors with family and friends. Together they purchased and restored many old homes, restoring them to their original beauty. In 1990, the family settled in Shelbyville IL, later acquiring Cardinal Campground and have been running the business for over thirty years. Annette was a home health aide, taking care of the ill in their homes with loving care. She volunteered her time to the community working at the Senior Citizen Shop in Shelbyville for many years. Annette enjoyed gardening, bird watching, and her grandchildren. Annette gave all she could to her family, friends and community. She will be greatly missed. Annette is survived by her husband, Rodger; daughters, Christina Brantley of Shelbyville, IL; Aimee Gholson (Ashley) of Mattoon, IL; son, Ryan Bassett of Shelbyville, IL; sister, Judy Ladd of Havana, IL; brother, Eric Allard of Springfield, IL; two grandchildren, Jeremy Stiles (Elizabeth) and Jordan Brown (Amber); and eight great grandchildren, Ziola Stiles, Marley Stiles, Draven Massey, Madison Massey, Skylar Massey, Carter Woodruff, Brielle Woodruff, and Alison Brown. She was preceded in death by two sisters, Phyllis Smith and Jeannette Antoncew. The family will host a celebration of Annette's life from 11:30 a.m.-3:00 p.m. Sunday, February 15, 2026, at the Shelby County Senior in Forest Park, Shelbyville, IL. | 2352 | Shelbyville News, Shelbyville, Indiana, Saturday, 7 June 1958 Sylvester (Bud) Towns Sylvester (Bud) Towns, 84 lifelong resident of Shelby county and former school teacher in Marion and Union townships, died at Major hospital at 11:00 p.m. Friday following an illness of several months. His home was in Union township where he was a retired farmer and at one time served as township trustee. Mr. Towns was born in Marion township on February 5, 1874. His parents were James and Cynthia Ellen (Rhodes) Towns. He was married October 26, 1898 to Louella Talbert who survives with four sisters and two brothers. The sisters, all living in this city, are Mrs. Nell Jones, Mrs. Nora Coers, Mrs. Blanche Talbert and Mrs. Bertha Golding. The brothers are Rev. Jess Towns and James Towns, both of Indianapolis. Mr. Towns was a member of the Little Blue River Chapel EBU church, where funeral services will be held Monday at 2:00 p.m. with Rev. William Cutshaw officiating. | 2354 | Shelton-Hunt Funeral Home, 12 March 2024 Nathan Penn Bass, Nashville, TN Memorial services for Mr. Nathan Penn Bass will be held at 2 PM on Sunday, March 3, 2024 in the Shelton-Hunt Funeral Home Chapel. Nathan Penn Bass, an attorney originally from Humboldt, TN, died unexpectedly on February 27, 2024, at the age of 64. He is predeceased by his parents, Billie and Betty Bass, and his brother, Joe Bass. Nathan is survived by his daughter, Zoe Bass; his sister, Treva Walters; and his brother, John Bass. Nathan also leaves behind his former wife, Shelly Bass, with whom he remained close friends, as well as Shelly's son, Nicolas Diaz. Nathan was an avid runner and adventurer, a talented writer and storyteller, and one of the most interesting individuals you could ever hope to meet. He had plans to move to Phoenix, Arizona, to start the next phase of his adventure and recently completed an epic road trip down the Historic Route 66 to explore what he intended to be his new home. Max Algernon Mueller quietly passed away at his home May 10, 1961 after having to retire from his trade of more than 50 years of decorating, painting, and paperhanging, due to ill health, in 1953. Mr. Mueller was born August 11, 1888 in Flatonia, son of the late Mr. and Mrs. William F. Mueller. He loved Flatonia and lived there during his entire lifetime. December 28, 1910 he married Viola Gajer, and they celebrated their golden wedding last December. To this union were born two daughters, Mrs. J.G. McDaniel (Melba), El Campo, and Mrs. Feris A. Bass, Jr. (Dolores) of Pakistan. He is survived by his wife, daughters, grandsons, Weldon Fay McDaniel and Feris A. Bass III, granddaughter, Laura Lynn Bass, one sister, Mrs. Dora Mueller of Flatonia, and many nieces and nephews. Rev. Joe Scott of the Methodist Church held the services in the Smith Funeral Home Chapel. Two of his favorite sons, ?In The Garden? and ?Evening Prayer? were sung. | 2357 | Shirley & Stout Funeral Homes Thomas Alvin Bass August 9, 1939 ? November 12, 2021 Thomas Alvin Bass of Kokomo, Indiana passed away at 9:10 am Friday, November 12, 2021, at the age of 82. Thomas passed away peacefully at St. Vincent Hospital in Kokomo with his beloved wife and daughters by his side. He was born on August 9, 1939, in McRae, Arkansas, to the late William H. & Mildred R. (Powers) Bass. Thomas married Carrie Faye Clark in January 1959 and had four children. On January 23, 1976, at Westside Baptist Church in Kokomo, he married Linda Sue Slaughter who survives. On this day, they forever combined two families into one. Thomas was a graduate of Kokomo High School. He was an entrepreneur by trade, he started Town & Country Refrigeration and later owned and operated Bon-Aire Refrigeration in Dayton, OH. He moved back to Indiana in 1975, where he founded and later sold Bass Appliance Parts. He owned and operated Diversified Services until he retired in 1995. Tom and Linda created T & L Investments where they invested in residential real estate. Thomas loved Jesus Christ. He was a member for over 40 years and a deacon of Westside Baptist Church. He loved to spend his time traveling in their RV with his family. He enjoyed hunting with family and bowling with friends. He was an avid fisherman and enjoyed spending time fishing with his wife, Linda. He enjoyed making the fudge and peanut brittle for his family every year for Christmas. Along with his wife Linda, Thomas is also survived by his children, Carrie Needler, Debra (Tony) Johnson, Tony (Janet) Bass and Kathryn Longacre; 9 grandchildren, Brandy Johnson, Jackie Garrett, Jamie Harris, Missy Trent, Kasey Cardwell, Josh Stewart, Jessie Bass, Alicia Branon and Courtney Esquivia, along with 19 great-grandchildren; siblings, Bill (Reida) Bass, Jerry Bass, Danny Bass, Kim (Keith) Jones and Randy (Leigh) Bass, and several nieces and nephews; and special brother-in-law, Chris Slaughter. Thomas was preceded in death by his parents; daughter, Charlyn (Brent) Stewart; grandson, Tony Lee Bass; and siblings, Jim Bass, John Bass, Haskell Bass and Wanda DeBours. When you think of Thomas, celebrate the good memories you have of him. Remember that life is fragile and short and should be lived to the fullest. He will be missed more than any words could express but he will be forever in our hearts till we meet again. Lambert, 90, was called home by his Lord and Savior on November 3, 2025. His wife of 67 years, Barbara, was by his side. The second child of Amzel G. Lambert and Roland L. Lambert, he was born on January 7, 1935, in Indianapolis, IN. Bill graduated from Lawrence Central High School in 1953, where he lettered in Basketball (Captain), Cross Country (Captain), Track, and Golf; and he participated in Future Business Leaders of America, Boys? State and Hi-Y (Advisory Board Chairman). Indiana University is where Bill obtained his Bachelor of Science in Business and participated in the ROTC military program. He was a member of Theta Xi Fraternity and served as President during his Senior year. This is a brotherhood which he proudly shared with his older brother, Tom (Indiana University) and his grandson, Weston Williams (University of Alabama). Bill met his future wife, Barbara Bassett, in a shared business class while earning his degree. He invited her to the Indianapolis 500 Mile Race with his family. During the race, there was a crash in front of their seats, Barb was hit on her forehead with a flying chunk of rubber from a tire and received several stitches at the infield hospital. Bill felt heartsick and said he would take her right home so she could rest, and she replied, ?Oh no, I?m staying for the race!? ...he was smitten! Following graduation in 1957, Bill was hired directly by Kaiser Aluminum and relocated to Chicago, IL where he started a successful career in Sales. In 1958, Bill was called to duty in the United States Air Force, but not before he and Barb were wed in March of that year. The newlyweds resided in Riverside, CA during Bill?s service to our Country. After his Honorable Discharge, he and Barb returned to Kokomo, IN, where he partnered with his father-in-law and mentor, Weston H. Bassett, in the family business, Star Building Supply. Bill and Barb raised their daughters within the Kokomo community and continue to call it their home. Summers were highlighted by spending family time on Lake Maxinkuckee in Culver, IN. Bill?s involvement and patronage included: Indiana University, Indiana University - Kokomo, Ivy Tech - Kokomo, First National Bank of Kokomo and later BMO Harris Bank, Kokomo Family YMCA, Kokomo County Club, Rotary Club, The Elks Club, Homebuilders Association, Grace United Methodist Church, Kokomo Great Banquet, Kairos Prison Ministry, Kokomo Rescue Mission, Kokomo Men?s Huddle Bible Study, and Bible Study Fellowship International; as well as Lake Maxinkuckee Association, Lake Maxinkuckee Environmental Fund, Maxinkuckee Country Club and Maxinkuckee Yacht Club. Bill enjoyed playing tennis and golf as well as watching a variety of sports where athletes compete at their highest levels, be it high school, college or professional. He was an avid ?Brickyard? fan and never missed the Indianapolis 500! He was a great dancer and favored big band music and that of Frank Sinatra. He cherished his family, friends, and community, but above all, his faith in Jesus Christ remains his enduring legacy. Along with his wife, Barbara Bassett Lambert, he is survived by his daughter, Katharyn Lambert Williams (Daniel); grandson Weston Daniel Williams; and numerous in-laws and nieces and nephews. | 2359 | Shirley Bassett April 6, 1936 ? November 29, 2025 Arnold, NE Shirley Ann (Nansel) Bassett went home to be with her Lord on November 29, 2025, surrounded by her loving family. Shirley was born April 6, 1936, to Loyd Kenneth Nansel and Lois Mae (Avers) Nansel on a farm southwest of Arnold, Nebraska. After losing both parents at a young age, Shirley and her five siblings continued working the family farm, supporting one another as they pursued their education. Following her graduation from Arnold High School in 1953, she left the farm to attend nurses? training for one year. In November of 1955, she married Gary Joe Bassett of Arnold, NE and they settled on his family farm east of town. Here she accepted Jesus as her Lord and Savior in 1959. They farmed for twelve years and welcomed Tracy, Randall, Ann and Holly into their family In 1968, Gary and Shirley?s love of God and compassion for those who did not know Him compelled them to sell their livestock and farm equipment and complete three years of missionary training with New Tribes Mission (now Ethnos360). In January of 1971, they packed the family, which now included Eric who was only four-months old, into their crew cab pickup and drove to Panama, Central America. There they began their seven years of missionary service as dorm parents for elementary school children, and their family was completed when Russell was born. In 1978 Gary and Shirley transferred to the New Tribes Language Institute in Camdenton, MO. She served as women?s work detail leader, then as organizer of the ?mission barrel,? and finally as printer in the print shop. She also served as a planner and cook for the mission?s Refresher Course/conference each summer. Shirley embraced each responsibility wholeheartedly and with quiet devotion After 22 years of selfless, faithful service at the Language Institute, Gary and Shirley retired to the town of their youth, Arnold, NE in 2001. The first two years were spent renewing ties with the community and remodeling their home. But in December of 2003, everything changed when Gary was tragically killed in a car accident, and Shirley was left to figure out life on her own. She found purpose in gardening, walking, Good News Club, organizing blood drives, planning funeral dinners, and many other church and community activities. She treasured the memories she made with her children and grandchildren on trips, visits, and during two family reunions in Colorado. As her health declined, she faced each day with the same steady resolve and grit that had defined her life. The last 18 months of her life were spent in Lenexa, Kansas, with her daughter, Holly, providing excellent care. Shirley was a devoted lover of her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. She was dearly loved by her family and those around her. She lived her life shaped by the love her Heavenly Father had for her, and that love flowed naturally into how she served others. She genuinely enjoyed listening to people?s stories?the ordinary details, the quiet struggles, the moments most would overlook. She carried those things with her, often scribbling names, needs, and passing comments into the pages of her prayer journals so she could lift them up privately. No request was too great or too small for her to bring before the Lord. Shirley was preceded in death by her parents, Loyd and Lois Nansel; siblings, Delmar, Wayne, and Kenneth Nansel, and Ardith Clark; her husband of 48 years, Gary Bassett; sons-in-law, Steve Robertson and Joel Emerson; grandson, Ian Mark Bassett and mother-in-law, Verel Chrisp. She is survived by two siblings, Theda Colman of Broken Bow, NE and Ralph Nansel of Arnold, NE; her children, Tracy (Mike) Jarvis of Canby, OR; Randall (Diana) Bassett of Killeen, TX; Ann Bassett of Nashville, TN; Holly Robertson of Lenexa, KS; Eric (Holly) Bassett of Columbia, MO; and Russell Bassett of Denver, CO; 12 grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren with another one on the way. A Celebration of Life service will be held Saturday, December 13, 2025, at the Arnold Baptist Church at 10:00 AM. Shirley loved bright colors, and the family invites you to wear them to the service. Burial will be at the Arnold Cemetery immediately following the service. There will be a noon meal provided at the church. She was born March 27, 1928 in Greenwood, Indiana to the late Charles Leland and Lestie America Slack Short. Avarilla lived most of her life in Irvington. She attended Arsenal Technical High School, and her first employment was with H.P. Wasson. Avarilla then worked with her mother and sister for many years for Ramsey Interiors and L.S. Ayres & Co. as a talented seamstress. Avarilla was a babysitter for many years for Amy Rothrock who cherished her as ?Grandma Relia.? After retirement she worked for over 20 years for McDonalds where she was affectionately known as ?Miss Rilly.? Avarilla was honored on her 86th birthday with a party, a proclamation from the City of Indianapolis, and a visit from the Mayor. She enjoyed traveling with her family and cheering on the Indianapolis Colts. Visitation will be Sunday, March 26, 2023 from 2:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. at Shirley Brothers Irving Hill Chapel, 5377 E. Washington St. A Celebration of Life service will be held on what would be her 95th birthday at 1:00 p.m. Monday. Avarilla is survived by her daughters, Charlene Carswell and Carolene Bash (David); granddaughter, Carrie Dillman (Ryan); great-granddaughter, Cora Dillman; and her seven precious kitties. He was a graduate of Richmond High School and later joined the United States Military. Dale enjoyed fishing, hunting and working in his garden. He was an avid book reader and enjoyed solving Sudoku puzzles. Dale retired from Dana Incorporated in Richmond where he worked as a machinist. Dale is survived by his children: Dale E. Bass, Jr. and his wife, Shawna of Brownsville; William C. Bass of Richmond, Thomas A. Bass and his wife, Charlotte of Oregon; Paul D. Bass, of Brownsville, Michael E. She was the devoted and loving wife for 46 years to Donald Bassett. Born in Bristol, RI, Dee was the second of six children born to the late Joseph B. Cardoza and Marguerite (Botelho) Horta. She grew up in Berkley and attended Taunton High School. A woman with a great work ethic, Dee, along with her husband, Don, was an Owner/Operator of Don Dee News. With their office located on Winthrop Street in Taunton, Don and Dee worked with many publication and media companies in distributing their printed papers to the City of Taunton residents. In her spare time, Dee had a wide variety of hobbies and interests. She had a knack for creativity and loved to make crafts. She had a special place in her heart for all animals, especially her horses. She liked to be in nature and enjoyed bird watching. Dee took great pride in providing a safe and comfortable home to all, especially during the holiday season, where she loved hosting family gatherings for all to be together. Above all, Dee cherished the time spent and memories made with her dear family. In addition to her husband, Dee is survived by her caring and devoted daughter Doreen Curran and her husband Peter; her grandchildren: Robert Martin III, Jessica Wheaton and her husband Don and Kelsey Borges and her partner Michelle May; her great-grandchildren: Trenton Martin, Lex Wheaton, and Willow Wheaton; her sisters: Johann Mueda and Marjorie Matthews; and many nieces and nephews. Jerry graduated from Beebe High School, attended ASU-Beebe, and enlisted in the Arkansas National Guard where he proudly served for thirty years before retiring at the rank of Sergeant First Class. In his civilian life he worked for Ford Motor Co., owned and operated El Sancho's Mexican Restaurant in Beebe during the 1970's and the 1980's, as well as working for the city of Beebe. Jerry was a long- time member of the Beebe Nazarene Church. He was also an accomplished outdoorsman and an avid Arkansas Razorbacks fan. When not hunting, fishing or cheering on the Hogs, he also excelled at the pursuits of gardening and arrowhead collecting. Jerry also loved traveling the American Southwest. She was born September 12, 1942 in Houma, Louisiana to Leslie and Delores Harson. Linda grew up in a large Cajun family in the home her father built in Houma. Linda practiced her commitment to helping others and giving back to her community as a leader in the Order of the Rainbow for Girls while attending Terrebonne High School. After graduating, she attended LSU?s Charity Hospital School of Nursing. Linda began her nursing career at Baptist Hospital working with an OB/Gyn surgeon in New Orleans. Knowledge in this field became very important to Linda herself when she went into labor with her first child as Hurricane Betsy came ashore in 1965. She spent that long night pouring over nursing books helping her to get through, luckily making it to the powerless hospital the following morning just in time to deliver her son. Linda moved with her then husband, Lewis Crow, to Pine Bluff in 1970. While there she loved playing golf and tennis and was a member of the Pine Bluff Junior League. She moved with her husband and their four children to Little Rock in 1975. After she and Lewis divorced, she worked again as a nurse at Arkansas State Hospital. In 1986 Linda remarried to Terence Patrick Bass III (d.2021), blending their large families. She loved traveling with Pat on many trips and especially enjoyed her visits back to Louisiana to spend time with her family laughing, playing poker, and pickin? crabs. Linda was a wonderful cook who made a world class gumbo and many delicious cajun delights. She cherished being with family, especially her many grandchildren, step-grandchildren and step-great grandchildren. Lindas?s beautiful crooked smile, contagious laugh, and sparkling brown eyes made those around her feel welcome and at ease. Before becoming incapacitated, Linda was a faithful member of St. Anne?s Catholic Church. She joined the Ladies of Charity organization, helped by making rosaries and volunteered as a ?Heavenly Duster? cleaning the church with her friends. Her family is thankful that Linda is now at peace and made it to heaven in time to celebrate her beloved Pat?s birthday with him on January 19th. A lifelong resident of Franklin County, Bill was born on July 27, 1941, in Montague, Massachusetts, to William Francis Bassett, Sr., and Ellen Katherine (Dubreuil) Bassett. Bill graduated from Greenfield High School in 1959, where he was already known for his leadership, creativity, and commitment to service?values first shaped by earning the rank of Eagle Scout, an achievement that reflected the integrity and dedication he carried throughout his life. He went on to pursue his passion for art and education, earning a Bachelor of Arts degree from the Massachusetts College of Art and later completing a Master?s degree in Education at the University of Massachusetts. These academic achievements laid the foundation for a lifelong career dedicated to teaching, mentorship, and leadership. Over the years, Bill served the Greenfield community as an art teacher, vice principal, and ultimately principal of Greenfield High School. In 1963, Bill married his high school sweetheart, Rose-Marie. Their marriage of more than six decades was the cornerstone of his life. Together they began their family in Niskayuna, New York, where Bill started his career teaching art to high school students. In 1966, they returned to Greenfield with their young son, William Edward, and later welcomed a daughter, Jennifer Lyn. Bill was deeply devoted to his family, finding his greatest joy in being a loving husband, father, grandfather, and role model. A gifted artist and passionate educator, Bill loved sharing his creativity with others. He often created additional art classes outside of regular school hours to further inspire his students. In the 1980s, Bill and his art classes painted murals on buildings throughout the city of Greenfield; remnants of one such mural remain visible on the side of what was once the Country Jeweler at the corner of Chapman and Main Streets. Deeply committed to community engagement, Bill also designed a well-received class project that encouraged students to research historic buildings by interacting directly with longtime community members. His paintings have been displayed in Greenfield City Hall, private residences, and galleries throughout New England. Bill?s dedication to service extended well beyond the classroom. He coached football and track, volunteered with the YMCA, and served for many years as a Scoutmaster with the Boy Scouts of America, sharing his love of learning, leadership, and the outdoors with generations of young people. He also gave generously of his time to Blessed Trinity Parish and numerous community projects. Bill was known for his thoughtfulness, humility, and genuine care for his family, students, neighbors, and friends. In his personal life, Bill found great fulfillment in painting and took pride in maintaining his home with care and craftsmanship. During the winter months, he enjoyed cross- country skiing through the New England landscapes he loved so dearly?and so often captured in his art. Bill is lovingly remembered by his wife, Rose-Marie; his son, William Edward; his daughter, Jennifer Lyn; his brother, Edward, and sister-in-law, Lonna; his daughter-in- law, Kathie; his grandchildren, Cooper, Lucia, and Sam; his niece, Lynette, and her family; and his nephew, Scott. Bettie enjoyed playing euchre, reading, playing BINGO, crocheting, working in her puzzle books and music. She was a member of Zion United Church of Christ in South Bend. Bettie was a wonderful person who always had a smile on her face. Born in San Antonio, Texas, on June 11, 1948, Homer lived a life of quiet but profound service. He answered his country?s call by serving in the United States Navy during Vietnam as an Electrician?s Mate, stationed aboard the USS Pickerel submarine. After his honorable discharge, he put his skills to work at Houston Light and Power, where he served as an electrician before moving to Charleston, South Carolina. There, he earned a degree in electrical engineering technology from Trident Technical College and devoted 25 years to civil service at the Charleston Naval Shipyard until its closure in 1996. During his time there, Homer worked as a nuclear weapons inspector, a role that required precision, discretion, and an unwavering sense of duty. He then went on to build a second career with US Airways, from which he also retired. Even in his later years, Homer?s connection to his fellow veterans never faded. His visits to the VA became something he looked forward to deeply, not just for the care he received, but for the conversations that filled those waiting rooms. In a fellow veteran, Homer found a kindred spirit, someone who understood without explanation. Those exchanges meant the world to him. Homer never met a stranger. If you were lucky enough to sit down with him, you?d better clear your afternoon, because there was no such thing as a short conversation with Homer Bass. He was funny, sharp, and endlessly curious, a man who could humble you at Trivial Pursuit without breaking a sweat. History was his strong suit, but don?t even think about challenging him on movies. He could tell you who was in it, who directed it, and exactly what year it was made, without missing a beat. More than anything, Homer cherished his role as father and grandfather. His children and grandchildren were his greatest joy and his greatest pride. He wanted nothing more than to leave something lasting behind, not in things, but in the lessons he shared, the stories he told, and the quiet wisdom he pressed into the people he loved most. He believed in legacy, in passing down what matters, and in making sure those who came after him knew exactly where they came from. Homer is survived by his daughters, Lori Bass and Jillian Bass-Causey, and his grandchildren, Van, Lane, Addison, and Lilianna. "Mickey" as everyone knew her was a loving and kind person. She was a school teacher, piano teacher, and home maker. She always had a love of music and dance and taught tap dancing until she was 80. Mickey was always there to care for others in her family. Her father Irving Joseph died an untimely death at 48 years old and Mickey was only 18, left to grieve as well as care for both her sisters Suzanne, and Carol 12 and 6 years old respectively. She took a year off from college to help her mother Shirley Joseph get back on her feet. The Joseph women are all small but mighty and Shirley was able to raise all 3 girls with the help of Mickey. As a supportive mother she always was a source of compassion and loving advice to three children that all worked very hard to become the professionals they are today. Without her support this would not have been possible. In addition to teaching dance, she also played Mahjong, painted wonderful oils and water colors, and was a voracious reader with James Michener being one of her favorite authors. Mickey will be missed by everyone she touched throughout the years. She is survived by her daughter, Amber (Michael) Barker, son, John Bass both of Springfield, Ohio and stepdaughter, Joetta (Mark) Bragg of Columbus, Ohio and the light of her life, her grandchildren, Madison and Brandon Barker both of Springfield, Ohio who brought her joy, laughter and endless hugs. Also survived by her sister in law, Sandra Bass of Evansville, Indiana, sisters Cynthia Dunlevy and Kathleen Friedman both of Medway, Ohio and Virginia Flanagan of St. Petersburg, Florida and numerous nieces and nephews. Susan's special friends include Guy and Barbara DeCamp, of Springfield, Ohio, Mark Crabill of Atlanta, Georgia and Vicky Dean of St. Louis, Missouri. | 2399 | Springfield News-Sun, Ohio, Thursday, 23 February 2006 Rev. DeSoto Bass Clergyman and teacher (1867-1928) Reverend DeSoto E. Bass was born on a farm in Liberty (German) Twp. in Darke County, Ohio, Aug. 28, 1867. He was the son of William Riley Bass an Serlenia Bush Bass. Bass graduated from the Union Literary Institute in Randolph County, Ind., and taught school in Darke County. Bass also attended Wilberforce University in Wilberforce, and later the Theological Seminary in Dayton. In 1895, at the age of 28, he became the pastor of First Wesleyan Methodist Church in Dayton. The church was known as the ?abolitionists? church? because of the strong stand its member took against slavery. Bass served as pastor of the church for 34 years, until his death Oct. 8, 1928. Bass was given the title of community or city pastor in Dayton because of the devotion shown by him to his church, race and people. His aim in life was to render his service to mankind. Bass visited the sick of the city of Dayton, regardless of their religious creed, and made regular visits to both Miami Valley and St. Elizabeth hospitals and to the county infirmary. He was a member of the Interdenominational Ministerial Alliance of the city of Dayton, and helped organize the Colored Ministerial Alliance. Because of his community leadership, the first public-housing development constructed in Dayton bears his name. The DeSoto Bass Courts were constructed with the assistance of federal funds provided by Congress. The development opened to 200 low-income families in February 1940. Expansion was made in 1942 to house 110 additional families. Two hundred units were added in 1943, 340 in 1944 and 100 in 1945. After the end of World War II, veterans were housed there in emergency housing. In 1947 and 1948, 55 more units were constructed under a Congressional act, providing housing for veterans and bringing the total to 1,005 housing units. | Bass, Desoto E. (I11)

| 2400 | Springfield Republican, Massachusetts, Thursday, March 2, 1916 Mary Elizabeth Bishop Bassett Mrs. Mary Elizabeth Bishop Bassett, 84, for many years a respected resident of Athol, died at her home on Main street, Athol, early Saturday morning. Mrs. Bassett was a native of Marlboro. She married Cyrus Bassett in 1858. He died in 1882. A daughter died many years ago.
