A native of Prairie, N.D., Mrs. Bassett resided most of her life in Smyrna. She was a member of the auxiliary of Community Memorial Hospital, Hamilton, and a former member of the auxiliary of the Smyrna Fire Department. She was a former Girl Scout and 4-H leader in Smyrna. Surviving are four sons, Robert and David, both of Smyrna, Clarence of Clifton Park and Richard of Agawam, Mass.; two daughters, Nancy Bassett of Smyrna and Linda Manchester of Sherburne; t sisters, Christine Picha of Glencoe, Minn., and Anna Weller of Suring, Wis.; 16 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and a great-great-granddaughter; and several nieces and nephews. Services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Burgess Funeral Home, Earlville, the Rev. Paul Walker officiating. Burial will be in Wilcox Cemetery. A native of Yellow Island, Canada, Mrs. Bassett lived in the Syracuse area many years. Her husband, George, died in 1958. Mrs. Bassett was a communicant of Holy Cross Church, DeWitt. Born in Chicago, IL, she lived in Syracuse since 1970. Pat was a graduate of the University of Michigan and the University of Buffalo. A teacher for the West Genesee Central School District for 15 years, she retired in 1985. She was a member of St. Luke's Episcopal Church and the Christian Church of the Resurrection. A volunteer at Sunnyside Care Center, Van Duyn Home and Hospital, and Hospice of CNY, Pat was also a charter member of WAVES. Surviving are her husband of 55 years, Thomas G. Bassett; sons, Raymond (Patricia) Bassett of Webster and Kenneth (Penny) Bassett of Camillus; daughter, Elizabeth (Thomas) Finneran of Sumner, WA; and seven grandchildren. | 3754 | Taunton Daily Gazette, 23 Jul 1902 Sarah C. Bassett July 11, 1902, at her home in Foxboro, Mrs. Sarah C. Bassett, widow of the late John Bassett, passed from earth. She was highly respected and loved by those who knew her. She was born in Taunton August 9, 1834, and was the tenth and youngest child of the late Howell Lothrop, who lived on Lothr street, a short distance south of the Lothrop school house. Her mother, Nancy C., was a daughter of Ambrose Lincoln and a descendant in the sixth generation from Thomas Lincoln, the miller, an early settler of Taunton. Sarah's education was obtained almost entirely in the district school and chiefly under the instruction of the veteran schoolmaster, Benjamin Narvey, who was the teacher of the school in district No. 20 for 10 successive years, from 1838 to 1848, with the exception of 1842, when Nathaniel T. Cushman was employed. Evening spelling and speaking schools were prominent features of the administration of Mr. Harvey. Sarah very early became a good speller, and took an active part in the exercises of the schools, and in spelling contests was always among the last to be "spelled down In August, 1848, the ambitious scholars of the district, under the lead of Simon B. Wetherell, formed the "Laurel Literary Society," and established a paper called "The Laurel,", which was made up of original contributions from the members of the society, and for some time was one of the editors. Her childhood and youth were spent during what may be called the golden period of the school district system. In September, 1849, when the high school was opened with Ozi Pitkin as principal, she, with three others from school district No. 20, entered the school and took high rank with the best scholars of the town. At this time there were four others from the same small district who attended Bristol Academy, all pursuing the higher branches of education. During the summer of 1850, before she had reached the age of 16 years, she was employed to take charge of the school in district No. 19. This school she taught with much success. but her literary and educational career was of short duration. In the fall of 1850 she became the wife of John Bassett, a worthy and respected citizen of the school district in which she had taught. After marriage she devoted herself to domestic duties, leading a quiet and peaceful life, spreading cheerfulness and sunshine around her. She was always kind- hearted and lively; was the sunshine in her father's house, and she carried the same characteristics into her own home. To visit her was ever a pleasure and one came away feeling better for the visit. In her later years she was sorely afflicted by disease, but her cheerfulness remained; what would have discouraged and depressed others she bore without complaint. | 3756 | TGR, Thursday, December 17, 1992 Bassett-Harriet Denkenberger Harriet Denkenberger, 80, of Alba, passed away in the Troy Community Hospital December 9, 1992. Mrs. Denkenberger was born June 2, 1912 at Grover, Bradford County, PA, a daughter of Jay and Georgianna Carl Bassett. During the 1950s she was employed as a machine operator at the former Wheldon Shirt Factory in Canton. She was a member of the Alba First Christian Church. Survivors include her husband of 52 years, Richard Denkenberger; son, Charles R. Bassett of Raleigh, NC; granddaughter, Mrs. Regina Troublefield of Apex, NC; sister, Mabel Marbaker of Canton; nieces, nephews and cousins. Private funeral services were held December 12 at the Morse and Kleese Funeral Home in Canton with the Rev. Jasper Smith officiating and interment to be in the Grover Cemetery, Canton Township. Sara had recently moved to Ga. to spend time with her son, Ian, daughter-in-law, Robin, and two grandchildren, Michaela and Caden. Prior to the move, she has resided in Loudonville for the last 15 years with her husband John, who also succumbed to cancer earlier this year. Sara was always strong at heart and strong-willed. She had previously worked as a nurse at AMC and more recently had been devoting time and energy to the Saratoga Mentoring Program, offering encouragement and support to budding young artists. In addition to being survived by her family in Ga., she is also survived by her brother, Rick Ludwig and his wife Patrice of Traverse City, Mich. | 3759 | The Ark Newspaper, June 2007 (picture included) Bernice Hamilton Bassett Bernice "B.B." Hamilton Bassett died June 5, 2007, at Marin General Hospital of a stroke. She was 86. Born in Flint, Michigan, Mrs. Bassett grew up in Indiana. Her family owned Hamilton Manufacturing Company. She met her husband Kirk through mutual friends during World War II when he was going through special training at Purdue University. They fell in love at first sight, he said, and were married in 1949. They moved to Belvedere in 1960. She was a homemaker and business partner with her husband in Bi Hound boutique on Main Street (now occupied by Waters Edge Inn) until they retired in the 1990s. (The other owner was Bennett Wren.) The Bassett played golf together and were members of the Tiburon Recreation Center (now Tiburon Peninsula Club). Mrs. Bassett is survived by her husband of 58 years, Kirk Bassett of Belvedere; three sons, Quentin H. Bassett of Manteca, and Brice H. and Mark O. Bassett, both of Eugene, Oregon; eight grandchildren; and two great- grandchildren. Services have been held. He was the husband of Carolina Rose Bassett for 55 year Born and educated in Brewster, Mr. Bassett attended Rutgers University. He served for four years in the Army Air Corps in Colorado. He was supervisor of overhead distribution for the former New Bedford Gas & Edison Light Co., Cape & Vineyard Division. Mr. Bassett was a life member of the NRA and enjoyed hunting, fishing and shellfishing. An avid gardener, he was well-known locally for his vegetables. He was a direct descendant of William and Elizabeth Bassett, who sailed to Plymouth on Nov. 9, 1621, on the ship Fortune, arriving just a few weeks after the first Thanksgiving. Surviving besides his wife are two sons, Cliff Bassett of South Yarmouth and Kim Bassett of Cummaquid; two daughters, Debra Sprague and Linda Harrington, both of West Yarmouth; a brother, Harry "Bud" Bassett of Ellsworth, Maine, and Florida; three sisters, Evelyn Herald and Marge Lee, both of South Yarmouth; and Gene Boswell of Norfolk, Va.; nine grandchildren; and five great-children. Bassett, president of the firm Bassett & Smith, Inc., realtors, is one of Detroit's well known business men and through his individual activities has contributed to the advancement and development of his city and county. He was born in Detroit on the 9th of June, 1893, and is a son of Arthur and Elizabeth C. (Fancher) Bassett. The family is one of America's oldest, having been established in this country in 1621 by William Bassett, who came from England and settled at Plymouth, Massachusetts. Thus Arthur F. Bassett is of the ninth generation of the family in this country. His great-great-grandfather, Nehemiah Bassett, was killed in the Revolutionary war. His son, also named Nehemiah, who was born in 1776, helped Robert Fulton build his historic steamboat, and in 1829 he came from Wayne county, New York, to Monroe county, Michigan, and took up a tract of government land, the original patent for which, bearing President Andrew Jackson's signature, is now owned by Arthur F. Bassett. Nehemiah W. Bassett, Mr. Bassett's olde paternal uncle, was killed in the Civil war. Arthur Bassett came to Detroit in 1869 and died in this city in 1916. He was born in Lenawee county, this state, on January 17, 1851, a son of Nehemiah and Mary (Foster) Bassett. In his youth he attended the district schools and completed his studies in the high school of East Saginaw. When fifteen years of age he began his commercial career as a clerk in a drug store. Afterwards he was connected with a wholesale drug house for a time and then spent three years in the banking business. After coming to Detroit he engaged in the drug business on his own account, conducting it for nineteen years, or until 1895, when he became a special loan agent for the Northwestern Mutual Life Insurance Company at Detroit. This brought him in contact with the real estate interests of this city, with which he was closely identified up to his death. He gave his political support to the republican party and his religious connection was with the Baptist Church. In November, 1883, he was married to Elizabeth C. Fancher and they became the parents of two sons, Gilbert L. and Arthur F. Arthur F. Bassett received his early education in the public schools of Detroit, attending the Irving school through the grades and graduating from the Central high school. He then entered the engineering school of the University of Michigan, from which he was graduated in 1914. For two years he followed the engineering profession in connection with the Detroit Steel Products Company, during a part of which time he was assistant engineer. In 1916 he resigned that position to take up the real estate business, in which his father had been engaged, and became a partner in the firm of Bassett & Smith., Inc., the offices of which are now at 2443 First National Bank building. During the subsequent years his firm has become prominent in the development of this city, handling some of the leading subdivisions, such as Vinsetta Park, Woodward Estates, a one hundred acre tract on Woodward avenue, and others of equally large acreage. Mr. Bassett is the president of the Vinsetta Land Company, is a director of the First State Bank of Royal Oak, Oakland county, and a trustee of Hillsdale College. On June 19, 1917, Mr. Bassett was united in marriage to Miss Jessie I. Lyon, of Detroit, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Fred J. Lyon, of a well known family of that city. They are the parents of five children, namely: Elizabeth Mary, born in Dayton, Ohio, May 2, 1918; Margaret Jean, born in Detroit, August 13, 1919; Nancy Lenore, born October 10, 1922; Arthur Frederick, born February 1, 1924; and Ruth Ann, born May 19, 1928. Mr. Bassett is a veteran of the late war, in which he served fr July, 1917, to April, 1919, as a lieutenant junior grade in the United States navy. Politically he is a strong republican and is greatly interested in public affairs. He is a member of the Masonic order, the Pontchartrain Club, the Pine Lake Country Club, the Red Run Golf Club, and is treasurer of the Detroit Baptist Union, being an active member of the Baptist Church. | 3764 | The Boston Globe, Massachusetts, 17 Nov 1980 Mercedes Bassett, Retired Drama Teacher, Writer Mercedes (Chic) Bassett, a retired teacher at the Cambridge School of Weston, died Saturday in Waltham Hospital after a long illness. Mrs. Bassett was born in Kansas and graduated from McPherson College there and since had had a varied career in teaching and drama. She was also a frequent contributor of stories to children's magazines. She first taught dramatics at the Neighborhood House in St. Paul, Minn., and next at the Northwestern University Settlement House in Chicago, where she met and married her husband in 1933. A resident of Weston since 1940, she was the founder of the original Children's Theater in Weston, taught at the Beaver Country Day School a later at the Cambridge School. During the summers, she and her husband conducted educational programs at several boys' camps, first at the Culick Lanakila Camp in Fairlee, Vt., and Camp Tree Tops and North Country School, both at Lake Placid, N.Y. Since 1948, Mrs. Bassett had been an active member of Vokes Players, Inc., Beatrice Hereford's amateur theater on the Boston Post road in Wayland. Mrs. Bassett was the group's director and historian. She leaves her husband, Phillip D. Bassett, and a daughter, Susan M. Bassett of Kirkland, Wash. Memorial services will be held Wednesday at 2 p.m. in the Church of the Holy Spirit in Wayland. (Sawyer) Bassett, a longtime Medfield resident who owned a beauty salon there, died Thursday in Newton-Wellesly Hospital. She was 64. Mrs. Bassett was born in Natick and later lived in Framingham. She was educated in the Medfield public school system and graduated from the Peabody School of Norwood in 1950. She owned Leona's Beauty Salon in Medfield from 1974 to 1993, and for a short time was a cafeteria worker in Medfield's Dale Street a Wheelock schools. Mrs. Bassett was a member of St. Edward's Church Choir and a former dean mother of Cub Scout pack 113. She leaves her husband, Elton R. of Medfield; two sons, Stephen E. of Norfolk and Scott M. of Medfield; a daughter, Stephanie A. of Medfield; a sister, Annie J. Sawyer of Medfield; and three grandchildren. A funeral Mass will be said tomorrow at 10 a.m. in St. Edward the Confessor Church in Medfield. Bassett, a retired sales representative for Columbia Broadcasting Systems Records. Mr. Bassett died Friday of a heart attack in his Needham home. He was 70. Mr. Bassett sold records to radio stations and stores for more than 20 years, retiring in 1979. During World War II, he served as a sergeant in the Army Air Corp. He was a member of the Needham American Legion Post, the Needham Veterans of Foreign Wars Manson H. Carter Post 2498, and was a board member of the Needham Community Council. He was also a volunteer for the Glover Memorial Hospital "Lifeline". Mr. Bassett was a founding member of the Great Plain Square dancers in Needham. He was 69. Friends describe Bassett, who was financially independent, as a man of broad intellect who was both strong in his conservative views but patient and tolerant with people with whom he disagreed if he thought they were trying to reach an intellectually honest position. Bassett's six years of Water Authority were marked by his belief that a public job requires public trust. That rigid view in 1980 led to his well- publicized quarrel with then County GOP Chairman Victor N. Farley. Bassett dismissed a Water Authority employee whom Farley wanted to retain. Farley then removed Bassett from the appointive job as Water Authority chairma After that, Bassett ended his political activity as a researcher and leader that spanned the 1960s and 1970s and included assisting former State Comptroller Edward V. Regan in his early political career. After leaving his Water Authority post and the Republican organization, Bassett devoted himself to investment analysis. Bassett was a member of a group that met for years at lunch in various restaurants to discuss daily events and exchange opinions. "Kingman always held his own with us," said longtime friend Thomas V. Troy. Born to a prominent Buffalo family, Bassett graduated from the former Elmwood School, Nichols School and Phillips Exeter Academy. In 1942, he entered Princeton University, but his college studies were interrupted from 1943 to 1946 by his World War II Army Air Forces services as a radar technician. He graduated from Princeton in 1948 but two years later was recalled to military service during the Korean War and served as a radar instructor. Ms. Davis was born Annie Ruth Bassett in Harwich, the daughter of Roger and Madelin (Beaupre) Bassett. She attended and graduated from local schools on Cape Cod where she worked and lived until she became an Army Air Corps Surgical Tech, stationed in Massachusetts and Colorado. She married and was honorably discharged in 1946. She and her family lived in Los Angeles and Sacramento, Calif., for the next few years. Finding herself a single parent of two small children, she went to work as a nurse's aide at Rideout Hospital in Marysville, Calif. During her 15-year hospital and nursing home employment, she attended nursing school, graduating as a licensed practical nurse. Moving to New Hampshire in 1966, Ms. Davis worked at Concord Hospital as a surgical medical nurse, retiring after 20 years of dedicated service. She then worked, often double and triple shifts, at Epsom Manor Nursing Home for the next five year Ms. David loved the great outdoors enjoying gardening, fishing, hunting, hiking, rock hounding and gold panning, all of which she shared with her children and grandchildren. She was an assistant troop leader for both Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts. Ms. Davis is survived by her daughter, Ann Davis of Chichester, N.H.; her son, David L. Davis Jr. of Tennessee; two grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; her sister Gloria Straughn of Brewster; and numerous cousins, nephews a nieces. She was born in Dexter, April 17, 1853, in the house on Spring street now occupied by Mrs. S. J. Redman. She was the daughter of Hiram Bassett and Susan Butler Bassett and when a young girl came with them to the home on Zion's Hill. After leaving high school she worked for her father in his dry goods store for several years. In 1882 she married Edward Page of the Page Spearing Co. Guilford and lived in that town until his death in 1904, when she came back to the old home in Dexter. She was the last of the Bassett family of four children; Ellen Derry, Clara Flynt, Celia Page and Harry Bassett all of whom spent their last years in the old home on Zion's Hill, and all will lie in the same lot in Mt. Pleasant cemetery. Mrs. Page belonged to the Eastern Star, the Woman's Literary Club and the Universalist church. He owned and operated Bassett and Sons Auto Parts in Emporia during the 1960s. During World War II, he volunteered as a civilian worker for the Air Force and the Signal Corps. He was trained in radio and technology at Philadelphia and Baltimore. After the war, he worked as an electronics technician for Ed Marling's in Topeka. He married Helen Troutman on June 29, 1945. She died in 1975. He married Geraldine Speck on June 19, 1976. She died in 1987. He married Louise Post on Feb. 10, 1990, at Mapleton. She survives. He had been a member of the Mapleton Christian Church since 1990. He was a lifetime member of Orient Masonic Lodge 51 in Topeka. He was past president of Ed Marling's Credit Union and past president of the Kaw Valley Amateur Radio Club. Mr. Bassett is also survived by two stepsons, two stepdaughters, four step-grandchildren, and two step-great grandchildren. A sister, Mary Ann Crocker, and two stepsons died earlier. Mr. Rathbun went down to attend the funeral and help administer the estate. Cass County Pioneer, Walker, Cass County, Minnesota, October 12, 1923 PROMINENT EDITOR IN EARLY DAYS MRS. ANN E.B. RATHBUN, DIED FRIDAY, OCT.5 AT THE AGE OF 80 YEARS. Mrs. Anna E.B. Rathbun died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Mabel Rogers, in Walker, Friday October 5 at 9:45 PM of Bright's Disease, after a very long and painful illness. Funeral services were held Monday afternoon at 2:00 in the Community Church. Rev. W.E. Hammond delivering the address. The deceased led a very prominent life. Her maiden name was Anna Elizabeth Bassett and she was born at Goshen, New York. At the age of 10 she entered a newspaper office as an apprentice and continued in the printing business during h school years and up until the time of her marriage, which occurred November 26, 1866 when she was married to Alonzo E. Rathbun at LaSalle, Illinois. Mr. Rathbun was also a printer and they conducted newspapers at different points in the east for the first few years of their married life. But owing to the ill health of the husband caused by injuries received in the Civil War, they removed to Minnesota in 1879, and settled near Pelican Rapids. The call of the press was too strong upon them and it was not long until they moved into the village of Pelican Rapids and became the publishers of the Park Region Pioneer. Mr. Rathbun's health became worse and he went back east leaving the entire management and editorial work to his wife where she continued for a number of years and until shortly before she came to Walker in 1900. Mr Rathbun and her two children, Aurelia and Lewis, lived here for several years and until the daughter finished her education and had been married to J Mounts. The deceased then moved with her son Lewis to Akeley. After that, they went to Ashby, Minnesota where Lewis had established a newspaper. There she lived until about three months ago when her health became so very poor that no hopes could be entertained for her recovery and for that reason her daughters thought it best to bring her back to Walker where they could be with her during her last days, and Mrs. Mabel Rogers, her eldest daughter, has been untiring in her loving care of the sufferer. There were six children, two boys and four girls who all survive her. Mr. Rathbun died several years ago. The children are: Mrs. Mabel Rogers and Mrs. A.A. Oliver of Walker; Arvine Rathbun of Springfield, Oregon; Mrs. Sadie VanCleve of Garrison, North Dakota; Mrs. J.K. Mounts of Battle Lake, Minnesota, and Lewis Rathbun of Ashby, Minnesota. Mrs. and Mrs. Lewis Rathbun and Mrs. J.K. Mounts drove over and attended the funeral services, but Arvine and Mrs. VanCleve were too far away to be able to reach here. 'Tis hard to lose a mother even though her death be preceded by such intense suffering that one is almost glad to see her at rest, and the intense grief of the children and the many grandchildren is a tribute to the motherly love and care which she lavished upon them in the years gone by. She was a retired educator in the Dallas School Systems from the mid- 1950's to 1981. She taught fourth and fifth grades at Burnett Elementary School in Dallas. Eileen was born on February 18, 1916 in Silver City, New Mexico to Harry and Bertha (Sass) Bassett. She attended college at Western New Mexico University and married the late LTC Raymond C. Farney, USAF (Ret.) on May 16, 1938 in Silver City. Her husband died in 1990. She is survived by her loving son, Jerry (wife, Teresa) Farney of Colorado Springs; two grandchildren: Scarlett Farney of Colorado Springs and Greg Farney of Denver, Colorado; and a great-granddaughter, Samantha. She was preceded in death by a sister, Gertrude Clarkson. A celebration of her life will be held on Saturday, February 18, 2006 at Liberty Heights. Cremation is planned and she will be buried at Hillcrest Memorial Park Cemetery in Dallas, Texas. Bassett BASSETT, John M., 55, of Lebanon, husband of Laura (Bonor) Bassett, died Tuesday, (June 20, 2006) in Windham after a long and courageous battle with Mesothelioma, a type of cancer. He was born May 9, 1951, in Hyannis, MA, the son of the late Miller and Georgianna (Edwards) Bassett and had lived in Canterbury and Southington before moving to Lebanon four years ago. He was a graduate of Coventry High School, Manchester Community College, Hartford State Technical School and was employed at Rogers Corporation in Manchester before joining the Navy in 1971. He served aboard the USS Richmond K. Turner (DLG-20) as an operations specialist radar man from 1971 to 1975. He was employed at the former Corometrics Medical Systems in Wallingford (noe G.E.) from 1978 to 2001 and at Electric Boat in Groton from 2001 to the present. John loved nature, hiking, exploring and spending time at his family's Camp Bowman in New Hampshire. He enjoyed golf, antiques and working with his hands. He w perfectionist at his woodworking. In addition to his wife he is survived by Laura's sons, Ryan, Justin and Joshua Messier of Lebanon and Columbia; his siblings, Janet Niemi of Brockton, MA, Pamela Burgess and her husband, Charlie of Lisbon, Rachel Mackay of Richmond, VA, Thomas Bassett and his wife, Tina of Canterbury, Timothy Bassett and his wife, Susan of Windham, Sarah Glennon and her husband, James of Canterbury; his stepmother, Lorraine Bassett, a granddaughter, Emily, several nieces and nephews. | 3791 | The Hartford Courant, 5 Apr 2006 Shirley Bassett Ely (picture included) Shirley Bassett Ely of Essex, died on Sunday, (April 2nd, 2006) peacefully at the Middlesex Hospital Hospice Unit after a long struggle with Parkinson's Disease. She was 84 years old. Mrs. Ely was born in Indianapolis, IN on May 17, 1921, the daughter of the late H. Lee Bassett and Elizabeth Paige Bassett. Her family moved from Columbus, Indiana to Shaker Heights, OH, where she graduated from the Hathaway Brown School. She attended Pine Manor Junior College and Rollins College, where she met her husband, Matthew G. Ely, Jr. She was married on June 20, 1942 in Shaker Heights, Cleveland, OH. She raised three energetic boys in Pelham, NY and still found time to be very active in many volunteer organizations: The Junior League, signing with the League Larks, The Manor Club, serving on the Boards of Directors of both the Child Guidance Council of New Rochelle and The Pelham Visiting Nurse Association, and providing "Meals on Wheels" to shut-ins. She was an active member of the Huguenot Memorial Church in Pelham and a member of the Shenorock Shore Club in Rye. The family summered at Griswold Point, Old Lyme. After moving to her husband's family home in Old Lyme in 1984, she continued to volunteer at the Florence Griswold Museum, The Woman's Exchange and as a Director of the Visiting Nurse Association. She was a member of the Fir Congregational Church of Old Lyme, the Old Lyme Country Club, and the Black Hall Beach Club. She enjoyed tennis, golf, swimming, knitting, needlepoint, and piano. She is survived by her loving husband Matthew G. Ely, Jr., her sons: Matthew G. Ely III MD and his wife Susan of West Hartford; Timothy B. Ely and his wife Laura of Fairfield; Dwight C. Ely Sr. and his wife Marie of Trumbull. She leaves her five loving grandchildren: Collin, Melissa, Elizabeth, Kate and Chip Ely. She is predeceased by her brother, Duncan Lee Bassett and sister, Elizabeth French. She is survived by her devoted sister, Joanne Stevenson of Essex. | 3795 | The History of Western Allegan County, Kit Lane, Project Director FENNVILLE HERALD T87 The first issue of the Fennville Herald was published on July 2 1892, with Charles E. Bassett as editor. On the front page he promised, "An effort will be made each week to record all of the news of this section and to make the Herald a bright, clean paper, such as will be welcome in the home of every family..." There was at that time already a newspaper in the Village of Fennville, the Fennville Dispatch, founded in 1883 by John C. Holmes, formerly of Union City. Holmes apparently was not liked, and suffered from lack of local support. The Dispatch died the month after the Herald was born, then Holmes went off to found a newspaper in Hamilton which didn't do much bette Bassett was a teacher by profession and had begun the Allegan Record in 1890, but was unable to compete in the multi-newspaper town of Allegan and it was sold "under the hammer" in 1891. There was a second attraction to Bassett in Fennville in the form of Carrie E. Kingsley, the young daughter of Fennville fruit grower H.J. Kingsley. She and Bassett were married Sept. 1, 1892, and she joined him in the Herald office. The Herald was originally housed in "a small brown building on the north side of Main Street". In 1894 it moved to rooms over the bank in the Raymond, Hutchinson and Dickinson Block, on the south side of Main Street east of Maple, and was wiped out in the fire of 1895. The paper missed publication for nearly a month following the fire, and it was then located in a building on Main Street near the foot of Elizabeth Street, a structure it would occupy until 1985 when it was moved north to a small building at 204 East Main Street, in the middle of the downtown area. The Bassetts ran the Herald for 22 years, selling the paper in 1914 to the Royal Publishing Co., owned by H.M. Royal of Shelby who installed Ivan C. Lewis as editor. In 1917 he granted an option to Hardie L. Reynolds, Fennville storekeeper, and the paper ran large ads to permit him to sell out this stock before assuming the reins of the Herald.........
