Gertrude V. Dickson

SPRINGFIELD - Gertrude V. Dickson, 72, of Springfield, MA passed away Saturday
at Baystate Medical Center. Born in Springfield, daughter of the late Clement
and Hazel Bassett Dickson and was a lifelong city resident. She was a graduate
of High School of Commerce class of 1952. Gertrude retired as a clerk from
R.M. Sullivan Trucking Company and was employed in the trucking industry for
more than 45 years. She was a communicant of Our Lady of Hope Church. Gertrude
was the eighth great granddaughter of Pilgrim William Bassett who came to the
Plymouth Colony in 1621. Besides her parents she was predeceased by a brother
Clement Dickson, Jr. and two sisters, Beatrice Robison and Janet Dickson. She
leaves seven nieces and nephews, Diane S. Lillie of Cortland, N.Y., David R.
Robison of Chicopee, Daniel D. Dickson of East Longmeadow, John S. Dickson of
Springfield, Deborah A. Payne of Longmeadow, Martha J. Cardaropoli of Ludlow,
and Donna M. Lowe of Stoneham and 22 grand nieces and grand nephews and four
great grand nieces and grand nephews. The Funeral is Tuesday 8:45 am fr
Sampson's Funeral Home 710 Liberty St. Springfield, Ma followed by a liturgy
of Christan Burial at 10am at Our Lady of Hope Church corner of Armory and

Patricia A. Bassett

HARWICHPORT, MA - Patricia A. (Bugbee) Bassett, 69, died on Sunday in
Brewster, MA at Epoch Senior Healthcare. She was the wife of David A. Bassett.
Born and raised in Springfield, MA. Graduate of Technical High School in
Springfield. She went on to attend Nursing School at Springfield Hospital.
Mrs. Bassett went to Ohio where she worked as a nurse for 7 years. She
returned to Springfield to work at Springfield Hospital as a Registered Nurse.
Mrs. Bassett retired and moved to the Cape. She was a member of the Quilting
Club in Harwich and loved to sew. Mother of Jeffrey A. Bassett of Charleston,
SC, Sandra Roncartic of W. Springfield, MA & Lynn A. Miller of East
Longmeadow, MA. Also survived by 5 grandchildren and 1 great-grandchild. A
graveside service will be held in Mount Pleasant Cemetery, Harwic

Daisy Bassett

Funeral services will be conducted Thursday at 10:30 a.m. from the Cox
and Martin Funeral Home in Sandoval for Daisy Bassett, 81, of Sandoval, who
died Monday evening in the Odin Care Center. Rev. Dale Lockart will officiate
with the services and burial will be in the Sandy Branch Cemetery. Visitation
will be Thursday morning prior to the funeral services.
Mrs. Bassett was born in Toloo, Kentucky on January 11, 1900 to Samuel
and Lydia Cowsert Smith. She married Harvey Bassett in Salem in 1945 and he
preceded her in death in 1957. Mrs. Bassett had lived in Sandoval for the past
20 years.
Survivors include two adopted children, Henry Roper of Arkansas and

Dorothy S. Bassett

DELTA/LOGAN - Dorothy Stephenson Bassett, age 78, passed away peacefully
November 8, 1996 at Sunshine Terrace in Logan.

Born June 5, 1919 at Holden to George Peter and Julia R. Stephenson. Married
Nelson Spicer "N.S." Bassett December 18, 1946. He died October 15, 1988.

She spent most of her life in Delta enjoying the life of wife, mother, and
homemaker. She lived with her children after N.S's death due to health. Her
priorities were love of God, devotion to husband and children. Home was their
haven. She enjoyed needlework, quilting, reading and gardening. An active LDS
member serving in Primary and Relief Society leadership and teaching. She was
a leader in DUP, Anne E. Meiville Bishop Camp. She possessed great kindness
and forbearance. She heightened N.S.'s successes and accomplishments by
untiring care and support. Her children's and grandchildren's successes were
sources of quiet pride and joy. She was always a lady even in adversity. She
will be missed for patient and loving ways.

Survived by son and daughters, Judy (John) Bergstrom, Chandler, Arizona; John
(Annette) Bassett, St. George; Barbara (Bruce) Child, Logan; nine
grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; brother, Harold A. Stephenson, St.
George. Preceded in death by son; Richard; brother, Robert; sister, Helen.
Funeral services Monday, November 11, 1996, at 11 a.m. in the Delta 1st Ward,
222 West 200 North. Friends may call on Sunday from 6:30-8 p.m. at Nick
Mortuary, 190 South Center, Delta, and 10-10:45 a.m. at church on Monda

Marian A. Bassett

Beloved mother, grandmother and friend Marian Amelia Aldous Bassett passed
away peacefully on March 16, 1996 surrounded by loved ones. She was born
August 23, 1915 in Salt Lake City, Utah to Charles Sidney and Hortense
Bringhurst Aldous. Married Alden R. Bassett on December 15, 1934 in Salt Lake
City, Utah, he passed away on February 15, 1984. She had a gentle sweet nature
and touched the lives of all who knew her. She will be greatly missed. She was
a very talented seamstress and taught sewing for many years. An avid bowler
and loved to travel. Survived by children: Barbara A. (Verlan) Nielsen;
Beverly Jean Thygerson; Ron (Mary) Bassett and Cathy (Patrick) Alsup all of
Salt Lake City, Utah; 9 grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren. Preceded in
death by a brother who died at birth and a sister Millie Kay Eckenrode.
Graveside services will he held 1:00 p.m. Wednesday march 20, 1996 in t
Wasatch Lawn Memorial Park (Clermont section). Friends may call at Wasatch
Lawn Mortuary, 3401 South Highland Drive on Wednesday from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30
p.m. prior to the graveside services. The family would like to express
appreciation to Dr. Francis and Dr. Mariana for their wonderful care and

June Bassett Reid

DELTA - June Bassett Reid, age 85, passed away February 17, 1999 at home of a
heart attack. June was born June 22, 1913 at Delta to William Henry and Eldula
Bishop Bassett. Her parents and maternal grandparents were among the first
settlers of Delta. June attended Delta public schools, graduating from Delta
High School in 1930. She graduated from BYU in 1932. She married Walter Leslie
"Jack" Reid on May 19, 1936 in Nephi. Jack died April 21, 1996. Jack and June
lived in Abraham where Jack was employed by the Millard County School District
following her graduation from BYU. She taught elementary school in Sutherland,
Hinckley, and Delta until her retirement in 1976. June cherished her memories
as a school teacher. She was a dedicated and hard working educator. The
service "Mrs. Reid" rendered her many students will not be forgotten. June was
a devoted wife. She cared for Jack lovingly through his diabetes and other
health concerns. June was a member of the LDS Church. She served on the West
Millard Hospital Board, volunteered at the Great Basin Museum, served as an
election judge for many years and was a member of local bridge clubs. June is
survived by a sister: Irma Ingersoll of Palm Beach, Florida; several nieces
and nephews. She was preceded in death by four brothers and a sister. Memorial
services will be held Saturday, February 20, 1999 at 11 a.m. in the Delta 3rd
Ward. Friends may call at the Church on Saturday from 9:30-10:40 a.m. Burial

Ralph Bassett Wright

Ralph Bassett Wright, age 94, died Wednesday morning, June 18, 1997, in Salt
Lake City, Utah. He was born at home in American Fork on March 12, 1903,
during a spring snowstorm, to parents, Charles Gilbert Wright and Elizabeth
June Bassett Wright, delighted to have a boy as their first child. After his
mother's death when he was age 9, the family moved to Salt Lake City, where he
was reared by a loving stepmother, Clara Ball. Ralph courted and married Afton
Middlemiss in the Salt Lake Temple on July 5, 1929, and in time they became
the parents of four sons. Ralph's career interests were in banking and
finance. In 1934, he became president of the Salt Lake chapter of the American
Institute of Banking. He worked for Halloran Judge Trust Company, becoming
vice president and director in 1936, and in the position helped after t
Great Depression many people who had their home foreclosed, recover the
homes. He later worked for Equitable Life of New York, and his interest turned
to real estate appraising, becoming in 1939, a member of the American
Institute of Real Estate Appraisers. He left Equitable Life in 1946 to become
executive vice president of the Mortgage Department of the Union Bank a
Trust Company, later becoming president of that bank, which was afterwa
purchased by First Security Bank of Utah. He retired from First Security
Corporation as Senior Vice President over mortgage lending in 1973. He worked
privately as a real estate appraiser until 1991, retiring after 52 years as a
member of the American Institute of Real Estate Appraisers. Ralph worked many
years with the YMCA, and the Salvation Army, serving many Thanksgiving Day
meals to those in need. Many were the times he stepped out of his bank
president's office, donned hat and overcoat to stand in front of Auerbach's
store to ring a bell soliciting funds for the Salvation Army. He was a charter
member of the Board of Directors of Deseret Trust Co., owned by the LDS
Church. He was a president of the Salt Lake Kiwanis Club and the Ft.
Douglas/Hidden Valley Country Club. He was an enthusiastic golfer and a superb
fly-fisherman. Ralph was a lifelong member of the LDS Church. His wife of 59
years preceded him in death. He is survived by four sons and their wive
Ralph M. and Julia, of Bountiful; C. Richard and Elizabeth, of Drape
Robert and Janet; and David, all of Salt Lake City. He has 16 grandchildren
and 18 great-grandchildren. He is also survived by a brother and his wife,
Earl and Helen Wright, of Salt Lake City; two sisters and their husband
Margaret and Loyal Pierce, of Burbank, CA; June and Hal Glenn, of Gilbert, AZ.
He was preceded in death by a sister, Ethel, and her husband, Russell Rodgers.
Funeral services will be held at 12 noon on Saturday, June 21, 1997, at the
Monument Park 15th Ward Chapel, 1320 So. Wasatch Dr., Salt Lake City. Friends
may call Friday from 6-8 p.m. at the Larkin Sunset Lawn Mortuary, 2350 East
1300 So. and one hour prior to services at the chapel. Interment will be at

DELTA - Mary Bishop McMurdie Bassett, age 90, died June 24, 1995, in
Bountiful, Utah. Born February 22, 1905 in Paradise, Utah, to Samuel Kay and
Harriet Louisa Bishop McMurdie. Married William Smith Bassett on December 12,
1931, in Fillmore. Marriage later solemnized in the Manti LDS Temple. He died
June 3, 1988. She graduated from Brigham Young College, Logan, in 1926.
Received her education degree from USU in 1958. Taught school in Deseret in
1926. Continued teaching in Delta in 1927. Active member of the LDS Church.
Member DUP. Charter member of Lyric Lore. Survived by sons and daughter: W.
Lynn, and Mrs. LeRoy (Elouise) Larson, both of Bountiful; Kay M., Spani
Fork; 10 grandchildren, 20 great-grandchildren. Funeral services Wednesday,

Gerald T. 'Jerry' Kepler

Funeral services for Gerald T. "Jerry" Kepler, 68, of Sheridan will be 2 p.m.
Monday at First Presbyterian Church in Moorcroft with Pastor Charles Gifford
of the Mercy and Grace Ministries of Sheridan officiating. Graveside services
will be later in Pennsylvania. Local arrangements are with Kane Funeral Home.
Mr. Kepler died July 19, 2007, at Sheridan VA Medical Center. He was born Aug.
3, 1938, in Elmira, N.Y., to Jesse Abraham Kepler and Beatrice Mollie
(Bassett) Kepler. He served in the Navy from October 1955 to March 1963. He
worked for the railroad in Connecticut and in heating and air conditioning for
several years before moving to Wyoming, where he worked construction. He also
worked with the Wyoming Department as a heavy-equipment operator in Moorcroft
for 19 years, retiring in August 2000. He enjoyed bowling, the company of his
companion and caregiver, Jeannie Mills of Sheridan, and spending time over
coffee with friends and his dog, Pookie. He was preceded in death by a
brother, Paul W., two sisters, Joyce Martone and Sandra Kay Kepler; a
granddaughter. Survivors include two daughters, Pamela Denoy of Wilkes Barre,
Pa., and Mary Hartford of Alba, Pa.; two brothers, Ronald of Montgomery, Pa.,
and Stanley O. of Trout Run, Pa.; two sisters, Harriet Kiessling of
McEwensville, Pa., and Debbie Nicholas of Loganton, Pa.; and seven

Ethel (Bertholf) Bassett - SPOKANE

Visitation for Ethel (Bertholf) Bassett, 98, will be Monday from noon to 5
p.m. at Hazen and Jaeger Funeral Home. Memorial service will be Tuesday at 11
a.m. at the funeral home, with burial at 1:30 p.m. at Goldenrod Cemetery in
Tekoa, Wash. Mrs. Bassett, who was born in Tekoa, died Aug. 28. After
graduating from Tekoa High School in 1923, she moved to Spokane to atte
business school and worked in an insurance office for eight years. She then
worked for C.B. Demille General Insurance Agency as office manager and
underwriter for 23 years. She and her husband, Donald Bassett, owned a home at
Priest Lake and wintered in Arizona for many years. Mrs. Bassett enjoyed
fishing and in 1974 won a trophy for the largest Dolly Varden (16.5 lbs)
caught in Priest Lake. She also enjoyed playing bridge, handcrafts and
knitting. In 1995 she knitted more than 250 pairs of mittens for distribution
to needy children through the Sunset Hill Baptist Church and SCAN. Her husband
preceded her in death. Survivors include her sister-in-law, Alice Bertholf of
Spokane; and numerous nieces and nephews. Memorial contributions may be made

3761 The spring after she lost her husband (1822), Pheobe Weeks Bassett
sheared 3 sheep with her house shears because she was not strong enough to use
sheep shears; did up the fleeces; tied the bundle behind her saddle; mounted
her horse with the baby, Joseph Bassett, in her arms, and followed the bridle
path down the Kennebec to the nearest carding mill to get her wool carded into
rolls for spinning. She stayed overnight and returned the next day. In 1823
she married Asa Baker who was the son of Joseph Baker, said to be the first
settler in Moscow, Maine. Joseph Baker was very religious and was in the habit
of retiring to a small cave in the mountain near his home for a time with his
Bible. Pheobe Weeks had a number of children by her 2nd husband, 1 baby being
drowned in the Kennebec River. She and Mr. Baker had driven across the ice one
spring day to visit a neighbor. Returning at night they were almost on their
own interval when the sleigh broke through. The colt jumped for the bank, Mr.
Baker clinging to the reins, but Pheobe, wearing a long quilted cape with a
hood, the baby in her arms, was swept out of the sleigh her hood falling back.
Mr. Baker grabbed her hair and the colt dragged the couple to safety, but the
baby was jerked from her arms and swept under the ice and away. Asa Baker died

Harriet Woodhull

LITTLE COMPTON, R.I. - Harriet Borden (Hubbard) Woodhull, 85, of Taylors Lane,
died at home, Saturday, July 31, 1999, after a one year battle with cancer.
She was the wife of the late William Tennent Woodhull.
Born in Yonker, N.Y., a daughter of the late Samuel Thomas Hubbard Jr.
and the late Margaret (Bassett) Hubbard, she spent her youth in Yonkers having
lived in New York City from 1933 to 1935, Bronxville N.Y. in 1936 to 1975 and
Little Compton year round since 1975. She also summered in Little Compton,
from 1964 to 1974, Westport Harbor from 1914 to 1932 and Kennebunkport, Maine
1933 to 1958.
She was a graduate of Miss Master School in Dobbs Ferry, N.Y. class of
1931 and Katherine Gibbs Secretarial School in New York City, class of 1932.
Mrs. Woodhull was a former treasurer of M.H. Woodhull Realtors,
Bronxville, N.Y., former residential sales manager and member board of
directors management associates of Lawrence Management, Bronxvill
Mrs. Woodhull was a former member of Reformed Church, Bronxville. A
member of the United Congregational Church in Little Compton and its Finance
Committee, Ladies Aid, treasurer of Thursday Thrift Shop, Former deaconess,
chairman and secretary of Finance Committee.
She was a former president, secretary, and treasurer Bronxville, New
York Board of Realtors Inc., member of Westchester County, New York Board of
Realtors, Inc. and made member Emeritus of Westchester County Board of
Realtors upon retirement in 1975.
Mrs. Woodhull was a former charter member, secretary, treasurer for
the Junior League of Bronxville, treasurer of the American Red Cross,
Bronxville Branch; co-chairman Staff Assistance Corps and Blood Bank during
World War II, secretary of the Board of Directors Community Fund of
Bronxville, Easter, New York, treasurer of the Coffee Shop at Lawrence
Hospital, Bronxville, president of the Bronxville Women's Golf Association,
chairman of the Ladies Golf Association at St. Andrew's Gold Club in Hastings,
N.Y., first vice president of the Westchester, Wicks Curling Association, St.
Andrew's Gold Club, Hastings, N.Y, and co-chairman of 1974 U.S. Women's Curling
Association National Bonspiel, and a member of Bronxville Field Club,
Shenorock Shore Club, Rye, N.Y.
She was an honorary member of Warren's Point Beach Club, Little
Compton, member of the Sakonet Golf Club, Little Compton Garden Club and it's
past treasurer, Little Compton Women's Republican Club and it's past treasurer,
United States Senior Golf Association and its past secretary, National
Colonial Dames of Rhode Island and its past assistant treasurer, life member
of the Little Compton Historical Society, Fall River and Rhode Island
Historical Societies, Little Compton Public Health Nursing Association, Fall
River Marine Museum, National Trust Historic Preservation and Newport County
Preservation Society.
Survivors include a daughter, Elizabeth Armstrong Woodhull Bersing of
Virginia Beach, Va.; a son, William Tennent Woodhull Jr. of Newport; a sister,
Mary Hubbard Alling of Delray Beach, Fla.; a brother, William Hustace Hubbard
II of Bethlehem, Pa.; five grandchildren; and two step grandchildren; s
great-grandchildren.
Mrs. Woodhull was also the sister of the late Samuel Thomas Hubbard
III and Thomas Bassett Hubbard and grandmother of the late Mark Woodhull
Bersing.
She was the great-great-granddaughter of Richard Borden and Abby
Walker Durfee Borden, great-granddaughter of Thomas James Borden and Ma
Elizabeth Hill Borden, granddaughter of Rufus Waterman Bassett and Harriet
Minerva Borden Bassett.
A Service of Thanksgiving and Tribute will be at 3 p.m. Friday, Aug.
6, 1999, at the United Congregational Church, the Commons, Little Compton.
Burial will be private.

E. Richard Bassett

SALEM - E. Richard Bassett, 69, of Salem, formerly of Vernon and Springfield,
died Saturday, April 19, 2003, at Salem Township Hospital in Salem. He was
born Feb. 18, 1934, in Foster Township, the son of Mason "Peck" and Marjorie
Doolen Bassett. A son, Mason Lewis Bassett, preceded him in death. Mr. Bassett
was a U.S. Army veteran of *World War II, a mechanic for Capitol Machining and
a member of Operating Engineers Local 965. Survivors: a son, Gerald Lee
Bassett of Salem; a granddaughter; a sister, Bonnie Peyton of Illiopolis; and
many nieces and nephews. Services: noon today, Day Funeral Home, Patoka, the
Rev. Lillian Phillips officiating. Burial: Doolen Cemetery.

*Richard actually served during the Korean War. He was only a teenager during

Family and Personal History, Volume IV

LAWRENCE ROBERT BASSETT - Executive cashier and major stockholder in
the Nevada National Bank at Nevada, seat of Story County, Lawrence Robe
Bassett ranks high among the bankers of the region. He is a leader in
community activities, public and religious. Formerly a banker at Odebolt, in
Sac County, Mr. Bassett was prominent in the activities of that municipality.
Born at Larned, Kansas, on December 10, 1882, Lawrence Robert Bassett
is the son of Norton Henry and Minerva (Johnson) Bassett. His father was a
merchant. The banker was educated in the rural schools near his Larned home
and in the Wichita Business College at Wichita, Kansas. When he was only
fifteen years old Mr. Bassett began learning the carpenter's trade and also
assisted his father in the operation of a mercantile business in Larned. In
1901, Lawrence Bassett purchased a 160-acre farm which he worked in his spare
time.
Mr. Bassett entered the banking business in 1904, when, at the age of
twenty-one, he became assistant cashier of the Cleo Springs Bank at Cleo
Springs, Oklahoma. Five years later, however, he left the bank to devote
himself full-time to the farm he had bought eight years before. He
concentrated on the farm until 1912, when he sold it and moved to Odebolt,
Iowa. There, upon the recommendation of his former superior, the cashier of
the Cleo Springs Bank, he was appointed cashier of the First National Bank of
Odebolt. He has been in the banking world continuously since that time. In
1912, also, he helped organize the First National Bank of Odebolt at Odebolt,
and during 1915-1918 was assistant cashier, and during 1918-1933, cashier of
this institution.
In 1932, Mr. Bassett left Odebolt and established himself in Nevada,
where he took the leadership in the organization of the Nevada National Bank,
now one of the strongest banks in Story County. He has been executive cashier,
major stockholder and member of the board of directors since the founding day.
The president of the bank is Herbert Erwin Hadley, the prominent attorney of
Nevada and former city and county and Federal official, the story of whose
life and career appears on other pages of this Iowa history. Back in 1917,
when he was still at Odebolt, Mr. Bassett became a member of its school board.
Also he was town clerk of Odebolt for ten years.
In Nevada, Mr. Bassett is treasurer of the Methodist Church and past
president and treasurer of the Rotary Club. He is also a member of the Nevada
School Board and is active in the Nevada Lodge of the Ancient Free and
Accepted Masons. Gardening is his hobby, while golf is his favorite sport.
On June 1, 1911, at Enid, Oklahoma, Mr. Bassett married Margaret
Helmick, the daughter of Michael and Mary Helmick. Two children have been born
to the marriage: Constance Roberta, now Mrs. R. G. Rector and mother of Robert
Rector; and Carol, now Mrs. Patrick Donovan. Mrs. Rector's husband is a major
in the United States Air Force and is stationed at Omaha, Texas. Mrs.
Donovan's husband is a merchant in Des Moines. Mr. and Mrs. Donovan have no

Bernice B. Brown

Bernice B. Brown, 87, of Bremerton died of cancer Nov. 22, 2001, at Belmont
Terrace. She was born June 10, 1914, in Brewster to John Bassett and Jesse
Rennitt. She graduated from Broadway High School. She married Gustavus Brown
on June 9, 1946. He preceded in her in death in 1981. Mrs. Brown worked in the
federal civil service with the Navy until she retired in 1979. She enjoyed
fishing, bowling, traveling and reading. Survivors include one son, Lew
Herndon of California; one sister, Marianne Myers of Portland, Oreg.; four
grandchildren, two step-grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren. A funeral
will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Lewis Funeral Chapel, 5303 Kitsap Wa

Obituaries - Arthur Bassett, Ex-Armstrong Exec, 85 Di

Arthur Whiting Bassett, 85, retired Armstrong World Industries chief
power engineer, died Friday night at Landis Homes Retirement Community, Lititz
R3, after a long illness.
The husband of Helen G. Hall Bassett, he had lived at 1565 Mission
Road.
In 1962, he retired as chief power engineer with Armstrong World
Industries where he trained scores of top engineers.
He worked for the company from 1929 to 1962, starting as chi
power and heating section of the Lancaster floor plant.
Bassett was a member of St. James Episcopal Church, where he had
taught Sunday school for 15 years and served as a vestryman for 18 years. A
30-year member of the church property committee, he was chairman of that group
for 20 years.
A World War I veteran, Bassett served in the Navy after being trained
at Stevens Institute of Technology.
He was a member and past president of the Lancaster Chapter of the
American Business Club. Bassett held membership in the Lancaster Lod
Perfection, the 14th Degree Harrisburg Consistory, the 32nd Degree Zembo
Temple, the American Association of Retired Persons and the Pennsylvania
Society of Professional Engineers.
Educated in Greenfield, Mass., schools, he earned a bachelor of
science degree in engineering from Worcester Polytechnic Institute in 1920.
Born in Heath, Mass., he was the son of the late Rollin and Emma
Howard Bassett and a Lancaster resident since 1929.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by, a son, Dr. Donald R.
Bassett, Durham, NH; two daughters, Betty B., wife of Dr. Norman L. Miller,
Lancaster, and Marian D. Brenner, New Britain, Conn.; 10 grandchildren and six

Bula Ward and Tom Charles Married at Alamorgoro, New Mexico Last Week.

The news of the marriage of Mr. Tom Charles, formerly editor of the
Freeman, and Miss Bula Ward of this city at Alamogordo, New Mexico, will come
as a pleasant surprise to their many friends in this county.
They were married last week in New Mexico and the news reached here
Tuesday.
A year ago Mr. Charles took his family to New Mexico, with the view of
improving his wife's health, who later died. He became interested in a
newspaper at that place and remained. Miss Ward was a faithful nurse during
the sickness of Mrs. Charles, who was her aunt. After Mrs. Charles' death Miss
Ward returned to Belleville and resumed her work as reporter for the Freeman.
She is a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Perez Smith of Republic. While in Belleville
she made many friends who will wish her joy and prosperity in her far away New
Mexico home.
Mr. Charles was born in Republic county and for several years
published the Republic City News and Belleville Freeman. He is a man of
integrity, moral courage and many fine personal qualities. The Telescope
extends congratulations and good wishes.

Funeral Rites for Pioneer Recently Held

Funeral services were held recently for Mrs. Bula L. Charles, 86, of
Alamogordo, Tularosa Basin pioneer and former correspondent for The El Paso
Times who died May 10 in Alamogordo.
The Rev. Don L. Forsman officiated at service in Grace United
Methodist Church of Alamogordo. Burial was in Monte Vista Cemeter
A native of Warwick, Kansas, Mrs. Charles was known as the "First Lady"
of Alamogordo. She arrived at the Tularosa Basin in 1908, and became known as
the unofficial historian of the region. She published volumes of material on
the Basin, and was recognized as an authority on the writer, Eugene Manlive
Rhodes.
Upon the death of her husband, Mr. Tom Charles, she managed the
insurance firm he established in 1917. She was the first woman ever to serve
on the Alamogordo Chamber of Commerce board of directors and for many years
was chairman of the Chamber's annual tours to points of historical interest.
For many years she was Alamogordo correspondent for The Time

In recent years she helped form the Alamogordo Senior Retired
Citizens.
Survivors are four sons, Perl Charles of Vernon, Arizona; Ralph
Charles of Albuquerque, New Mexico; Ray Charles of Seattle, Washington; and
Ward Charles of Alamogordo; two daughters, Mrs. Kenneth McClernon of Fordland,
Missouri, and Mrs. Ben Rutz of Albuquerque; three sisters, Mrs. Grace Willis
of Alamogordo, Mrs. Bertha Van Nortwick of Camarillo, California, and Mrs.
Ashley Russell of Superior, Nebraska; a brother, Leonard Smith of Corvallis,
Oregon; 12 grandchildren, 31 great grandchildren and four great-great-

VALLEY FALLS - Paul D. Bassett, 52, of Rt. 67, Valley Falls, died Thursday,
February 22, 2001 at his residence following a long illness. Born in Troy,
June 21, 1948, son of Elizabeth Betts and the late Bryan Bassett and husband
of Linda Vosburgh, whom he married June 27, 1971, Mr. Bassett was a graduate
of Hoosick Valley High School and Morrisville and SUNY Oswego. He was co-owner
with his father of C.M. Bassett & Son Automotive Dealership in Valley Falls.
He also was the proprietor of Paul's Auto Body of Valley Falls. A member of
the Valley Falls Methodist Church, the Bud Light U.S. Water Ski Show Team, the
Weekend Wanders of Schaghticoke and the Pittstown Snowmobile Trail Blazers. He
was a former deputy mayor and longtime village board member in Valley Falls.
Survivors, in addition to his wife, Linda, include his mother, Elizabeth Betts
Bassett of Valley Falls; a son, Chad Bassett of Valley Falls; a daughte
Stacy Bassett of Richmond, VA; a brother, Robert Bassett of Valley Falls; and
a sister, Lois Marbot of Johnsonville. Also survived by several nieces and
nephews and his longtime canine companions, Onyx, Puff, Copper and Sierra.
Relatives and friends may call at the Chase Funeral Home, 173 Main Street,
Schaghticoke, Sunday, February 25 from 3-7:30 p.m. Funeral services will be
held Sunday at 7:30 p.m. from the funeral home with the Reverend Marty Wendell

NORFOLK - Martha Leah Bassett, 91, of the 2400 block of Hemlock St., passed
away Dec. 10, 2001. She was predeceased by her husband of 62 years, Merton F.
Bassett, and her son, Norman F. Bassett. She had lived in Norfolk since 1920
and was a member of Cornerstone Baptist Church and retired after 26 years with
the Union Mission. Mrs. Bassett is survived by her son, Ronald Lee Bassett of
Cleveland, Ohio; and her daughter-in-law, Isla Lea Bassett of Norfolk; a host
of grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren. The family

NORFOLK - Norman Filmore "Buddy" Bassett, 67, of the 700 block of Muskogee
Ave., was called to Glory to be with the Lord while surrounded by his family
on June 20, 2001.

He never met a stranger and always had a hug for all.

Buddy was predeceased by his father, Merton Filmore Bassett, and leaves a host
of family and friends who will miss him terribly. He is survived by his
mother, Martha M. Bassett of Norfolk; and his brother, Ronald Lee Bassett of
Cleveland, Ohio. His beloved wife, Isla Lea Albertson Bassett - his friend and
soulmate of 47 years will be comforted by their children, Jeffrey Filmo
Bassett and wife, Barbara, Bonnie L. Ditto and husband, Russell, and Sherrie
M. Kroner, all of Norfolk. His legacy of grandchildren, David W. Newton,
Candice L. Umstot and husband, David, Russell L. Ditto III and wife, Carrie,
Timothy Filmore Anderson, Christopher P. Anderson, Jeremiah W. Kroner a
Joseph A. Kroner. He was looking forward to his great-grandchildren.

Buddy worked for E.T. Gresham, the Virginia Transit Co., and retired after 30
years as an inspector at the Public Works Contract Division Norfolk Nav
Base. He also served in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict. He was a
former board member of the Union Mission and was a member of Connerstone
Baptist Church and loved camping, his boat, "The Budman", and the Dallas
Cowboys. He was loved by all who knew him.

The family will receive friends in the Smith & Williams Funeral Home, Norview
Avenue, today from 7 to 9 p.m. A funeral will be conducted in the funeral home
Saturday at 2 p.m. by the Rev. Fred Braswell. Burial will follow with military

Barbara N. Bassett - Translator

Barbara N. Bassett, 70, a former translator and researcher, died of
lung cancer March 15 at the Hospice of Northern Virginia. A resident of
Alexandria, she had lived in the Washington area off and on since the 1950s.
Mrs. Bassett was a translator for the Central Intelligence Agency in the 1950s
and a researcher for Avco Corp. in the 1960s. She was born in Chattanooga,
Tenn., and attended Columbia University. Mrs. Bassett accompanied her first
husband, Donald F.B. Jameson, to CIA posts in Germany and Spain during the
1950s. Her first marriage ended in divorce. Mrs. Bassett was a reader for the
blind under the auspices of the Reading Society for the Visually Handicapped.
Survivors include her husband, Ormon Bassett of Alexandria; a son of her first
marriage, Jeremy Jameson of Houston; three stepdaughters, Susan Bassett of
Baltimore, Deborah Bassett of Wallingford, Conn., and Elizabeth Cart
Boston; a sister, Phoebe Nixon of Santa Barbara, Calif., and five

I, Jonathan Bassett of Dalton in the County of Berkshire, being under great
bodily weakness but possessing, blessed by God, a sound and disposing mind,
have thought fit to make and do accordingly this ninth day of May in the year
of our Lord Seventeen Hundred and ninety eight make and publish this my last
Will and Testament in manner following, to wit.. I first commend my soul to
God, who gave it, and my body to the dust from whence it was taken in humble
hopes of a resurrection to immortal life and blessedness through the merits of
Jesus Christ my adorable Saviour. What worldly substances it has pleased God
to bestow on me I dispose of in this manner that is to say... In the first
place I direct that my direct debts and funeral expenses be paid out of it -
what shall then remain I give, both real and personal, to my beloved
affectionate and faithful wife Lucy to be improved by her support and t
support and education of our children until they shall respectively arrive at
the following ages to wit.. the Daughters to the age of eighteen years and the
son to twenty-one years old, or until they shall be married, whichsoever of
the events shall first take place. In case the said Lucy shall no longer remain
alive and continue my widow, in case she should decease or marry again before
my children should respectively arrive at the age aforesaid or be married,
then and in such case, I direct that my Executors hereafter named or the
survivor of them if either should decease, shall improve my real estate for
the support and education of my children in manner aforesaid to wit.. until
they severally arrive at the age aforesaid or be married, and it is my
pleasure and meaning that in the bequest and gift of my real estate to the
said Lucy, she should have the use and improvement thereof, for the purpose
aforesaid only, and not the fee of the same. I further order that my said real
estate be equally shared by my children and their Mother, she then being my
widow, otherwise, by the children only, when they shall have arrived at the
age aforesaid, or the survivor of them, or shall be married. And I here

At the same court, Lucy Bassett and John Spafard, Executors of the Last Will
and Testament of Jonathan Bassett late of Dalton, appeared and took upon
themselves that office and Trust, and a bond is taken of the said Lucy and
John for the faithful discharge of their said Trust as on file... And William
Williams Esq. and Amos Smith and Selah Goodrich, all of Dalton aforesaid, are
appointed to appraise all of the estate of which the said Jonathan Bassett did
own and possess in the County of Berkshire.

Widow Lucy (Spafford) Bassett was appointed guardian of these minor children
of Jonathan Bassett deceased on July 9, 1798. Lucy died Jan 21, 1805, aged 36.
Her brother Amos Spafford was then named principal guardian of these sa
children on March 5, 1805. Lucy's second husband, Amasa Day, was named surety.

Katherine Bassett "Kathy" Schroth, 77, of 123 West Fairfax Lane,
Winchester, died Saturday, Nov. 20, 1999, in Winchester Medical Cente
Mrs. Schroth was born June 6, 1922, in Aberdeen, S.D., the daughter of
W.W. and Angela Jewett Bassett.
She was a graduate of the University of Arizona with a degree in
economics. She was a member of the Sacred Heart of Jesus Catholic Church, the
Senior Century Club, and the Winchester-Clarke Garden Club.
She married Joseph A. Schroth on Dec. 6, 1946, in Aberdeen, S.
Surviving with her husband are four daughters, Mary Angela Schroth of
Rome, Italy, Sarah Walker Schroth of Chapel Hill, N.C., Barbara Schroth-
Williams of Purcelville, and Katherine K. Schroth of Mount Jackson; two sons,
John B. Schroth of Winchester and Joseph A. Schroth of Atlanta; six

A funeral was conducted 10 a.m. today at the Sacred Heart of Jesus
Catholic Church by the Rev. Stanley Krempa. Burial was in Mount Hebron
Cemetery.

Ronald Williams, Nicholas Cariello, and Matt McHale.

Winifred M. Bassett

TOPEKA - Winifred M. Bassett, 93, passed away Saturday June 9, at Plaza West
in Topeka. Born on June 1, 1914 in rural Fostoria, she was the daughter of
William E. and Martha (Walker) George. She attended rural schools and
graduated from Wamego High School in 1932. She was united in marriage to
Milford Bassett and the couple made their home in Havensville, Kansas. Milford
preceded her in death in 1992. Winifred was a 4-H Leader, a member of t
First Christian Church of Havensville, and a member of the Rebekah Lodge. She
was a loving aunt to many nieces and nephews and even raised one nephew,
Loran, as her own son. Winifred was employed with the Government at the Forbes
Supply Depot for six years until it closed. She is survived by: her nephew,
Loran George and wife JoAnn of Topeka, KS; her brother, Loyal George of Garden
City, MO; and numerous nieces and nephews. In addition to her husband,
Winifred was preceded in death by her sister, Fern Ganger, her brothers,
Donald and Willis George and her infant brother. Funeral Services will be 2:00
p.m. Friday June 15 at First Christian Church in Havensville Kansas. There

Arlene "Sue" Keller

TRAVERSE CITY - Arlene "Sue" Keller, 63, of Traverse City, died
suddenly Tuesday, Aug. 23, 2005, at Munson Medical Center.
Sue was born on Sept. 8, 1941, to LaVern and Rhea (Miller) Bassett in
Grand Rapids, and married Dexter Keller on Aug. 24, 1963, also in Grand
Rapids. Sue moved from Warren to Travers City after having family ties and
vacationing in the area for many years.
Sue was a member of the Friendly Garden Club of Traverse City, PEO and
Central United Methodist Church. She was president of Alpha Chi Omega at MSU,
where she attended school, and in later years remained an avid Spartan fan.
Sue was very active and spent time volunteering with the Visitor
Center in Traverse City, the Interlochen Center for the Arts and Munson Manor.
Whatever she was involved with, Sue always took a leadership role. In what
down-time she had, she enjoyed travel, shopping, and the art
Sue is survived by her husband of 42 years, Dexter; son, Thomas, and
good friend, Kim Shapiro of Raleigh, N.C.; daughter, Nicole (Terry) Shepardson
of Wyoming; sister, Marcia (Richard) Morse of Traverse City; brother, Alan
(Bonnie) Bassett of Allendale; mother, Rhea Bassett of Jenison; brother-in-
law, Max (Ann) Keller of Grand Rapids; and many nieces and nephew
Sue was preceded in death by her father and parents-in-law, Harry and
Eleanor Keller.
Visitation will be today, Aug. 26, from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m.,

Mabel I. (Bassett) Marbaker, 84, of Canton, PA, passed away on Wednesda
March 22, 1995 at the Towanda Memorial Hospital. She was born on November 7,
1910 in Blossburg, Tioga County, PA, a daughter of the late Jay P. and
Georgianna (Carl) Bassett. Mrs. Marbaker was a homemaker and widow of the late
Harry E. Marbaker Sr. who died in 1965. Mabel is survived by a daughter-in-
law, Bertha B. Marbaker of Canton; seven grandchildren and six great-
grandchildren; a brother-in-law, Richard Denkenberger of Alba; sisters-in-law,
Ruby Marbaker of Binghampton, NY and Nellie Bassett of Granville Summit;
several nieces and nephews, special friends, Dora Reynard of Canton and Julie
Burke of Troy. She was predeceased by her husband and sons, Ronald in 1982 and

Helen Bassett 1918-2006

CHAMPION - Helen Mardel Bassett of Champion Ohio, died peacefully at her
residence Wednesday, July 26, 2006.

She was born Oct. 30, 1918, in Warren, Ohio, at the home of B.J. Gillen. She
was the daughter of the late Herman Loftus and Ellen Baker Loftus. She married
Garland B. Bassett on April 21, 1938, and he preceded her in death April 7,
1963. Helen attended St. Mary's School in Warren through the ninth grade and
then Orwell High School, where she graduated.

She was a member of the NIAM Club in Warren. Helen was a "Nan" to many
children in her neighborhood and beyond. She loved spending time with her dog
Buck and enjoyed vegetable and flower gardening. She also enjoyed playi
cards, crocheting and preparing meals for family at holidays. She was an
excellent cook and baker.

Surviving are a son, Charles and Tracey Bassett of Bristolville, Ohio; a
daughter, Mary Ann and Joseph Davis of Niles, Ohio, grandchildren: Kimberly
and Edward Hlas, Jeffrey Grell and Cathy Hartung, Gea Bassett, Ashlay Bailey
and Gena Bassett. Great-grandchildren: Azyln Bailey, Carly Hlas and Joey Hlas.
She is also survived by a sister, Edith Griffith of Sarasota, Fla., a
brother, William Loftus of Champion, Ohio. She was preceded in death by her
parents, her husband Garland Bassett on April 7, 1964, two sons: Richard and
Donald Bassett and a brother John Loftus.

Services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, July 29, 2006, at Our Lady of Mount
Carmel Church in Niles, Ohio. Friends may call 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, July 28,
2006, at the Carl W. Hall Funeral Home. Interment will be at Orwell Sou
Cemetery, Orwell Ohio.

Funeral services for Mrs. Catlin were at 11 a.m., Saturday, Nov. 5, 1983, at

Vivian Bassett was born to Byron and Carrie (nee Gardner) Bassett in the Loyal
area on Sept. 17, 1901. She attended Heintown Grade School and Loyal Hi
School.

On Feb. 12, 1919, she and Haskell (Bub) Catlin were married at Marshfield. She
lived all her life in the Loyal area.

She was a member of the United Methodist Church, Loyal Senior Citizens and
Nine of Hearts Card Club.

Survivors include two sons, Clark of Mountain Ranch, Cal. and Frankl
Marysville, Mich., three daughters, Mrs. Marvin (Eleanore) Engevold of Loyal,
Mrs. Melva Guzman of Loyal and Mrs. Gwendolyn Bruckert of Loyal, 20
grandchildren and 21 great-grandchildren.

Ralph Bassett, poultry farmer, town official

Ralph W. Bassett, 78, of Colrain Road, Shelburne Falls, a longtime farmer who
was active in town affairs, died Wednesday at Franklin Medical Center in
Greenfield. He was a poultry farmer for 60 years, and a bus driver for the
Mohawk Trail Regional School District for 12 years. He retired from bus
driving in 1982. He was a trustee of United Savings Bank (now United Bank) and
the Arms Cemetery Association for several years. He was a former member of the
Farm Bureau Association and Shelburne Grange 68. Born in Greenfield, he
attended the former Arms Academy, and was a member of Trinity Church. He was a
former member of the Trail Town Twirlers and the Goodnow's Chip and Putt Gold
League for many years. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and gardening. He leaves a
wife of 49 years, the former Mary L. Stacy; two sons, Ralph W. of Shelburne
Falls and Robert W. of Buckland; a daughter, Pamela L. Twitchell of
Whitingham, Vt.; three sisters, Gertrude Jerr of Springfield, Dorothy Gilbert
of Plainfield, and Gladys Richardson of Shelburne, and six grandchildre

Ethan D. Bassett, 87, of Hazardville Road, died Sunday in Baystate Medical
Center. He was a retired electrical engineer for Electronic Colis, Inc. Born
in Hartford, Conn., he was a graduate of Groton, N.Y. High School and in 1935,
earned a master's degree at Worcester Polytechnical Institute. He lived here
for 47 years and was a member of First Church of Christ, where he served as a
deacon and an usher. He served for 20 years on the Longmeadow Planning Board
and was its chairman for many years. He also was a member of the Boa
Directors at Emerson Manor. He leaves his wife, the former Sarah Frisbie, two
daughters, Nancy Mack of Weston and Susan Ianni of West Rutland, Vt; a sister,
Prudence Hinkley of Newington, Conn., and four granddaughters. A memori
service will be Wednesday afternoon in First Church of Christ, and burial will
be at the convenience of the family in Rose Hill Cemetery. There are no

Mrs. Lena Bartlett, 67, died at the Bath Memorial Hospital early
Sunday morning, after several week's illness. She was born Aug. 20, 1876 at
Canisteo, the daughter of Will and Emma Buttles Bassett, and had resided on a
farm on the Avoca-Howard road for many years. She was a member of the Avoca
Presbyterian Church and joined the Avoca O.E.S. Chapter in April 1908. Was a
member of the Past Matron Club, having been Matron in 1925. She is survived by
her husband, Charles Bartlett. Three daughters, Mrs. Julia Miller of Rochester;
Mrs. Esther Thompson of Avoca, and Mrs. Elizabeth Pierce of Wallace, one

She was born September 16, 1919, in Jennings Township, Van Wert
County, the daughter of the late Dewitt S. and Hannah J. (Owens) Bassett. On
April 20, 1943, she married David I. Van Eman, who died August 16, 199
Mrs. Van Eman was a loving wife and mother. She was a member of Salem
Presbyterian Church in Venedocia and the Alpha Kappa Class of the church.
Survivors include three sons, Dennis (Kathy) Van Eman of Convoy;
Steven (Mary Lou) Van Eman of New Richmond and David (Sue) Van Eman of Elida;
a brother, Thomas Bassett of Venedocia; one sister, Dorothy (Paul) Cummings of
Lima; seven grandchildren, Amy (Sean) Neidemire, Stephanie (Jared) Stewart,
Betsy, Scott, Brian, Julie and Lori Van Eman, and two great-grandchildren,
Dalton and Hannah Reichert.
She was preceded in death by twin daughters, and by a brother, Richard
Bassett.
Funeral services will be conducted at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, October 23,
at Alspach-Gearhart Funeral Home in Van Wert, the Rev. Wendy Pratt

Phyllis) Bassett, in France; and two grandchildren. He was preceded in death
by his parents, one sister and one brother. He was a Marine Corps veteran of
World War II. He worked at John Deere Plow and Planter for 25 years, retiring
in 1984. He was a member of First Presbyterian Church, Milan. He was a member
of the Andalusia and Rock Island Lions Clubs, and was active with the
Andalusia Fire Department, Andalusia City Council and the Boys Scouts. Funeral

George Kemble Bassett, Winslow native and prominent Central Mai
attorney until ill health forced him to retire from general practice several
years ago, died suddenly at his home 30 Lithgow street, yesterday short
before noon.
Mr. Bassett had just returned from Waterville when he complained to
his housekeeper that he felt ill and had suffered a heart attack while in this
city. Upon entering his room he suffered another attack and while the
housekeeper was securing medicine, Mr. Bassett dropped dea

Cornish Bassett. He was graduated from Coburn Classical Institute in 1893 and
from Colby college in 1897. The next two years of his life were spent in
teaching schools in Baltimore and New York after which he enrolled at t
Harvard Law school from which he was graduated in 1905.
Immediately following his graduation, Mr. Bassett went to Augus
where, after passing the state bar examination, he practiced law with t
uncles, Leslie G. Cornish and Norman L. Bassett, both of who subsequent

bride; Miss Kathy Brown and Mrs. Lind Cramp, granddaughters of the

Mary Lue Stein, Custar; Eileen Wotschak in North Carolina; Helen Birtcher,
Napoleon; a stepson, Terry Feehan, Deshler; nine grandchildren; 21 great-
grandchildren; seven great-great-grandchildren; 23 step-grandchildren; and 34
step-great-grandchildren.

Mrs. Feehan was a nurse, working for Wood County Hospital, Bowling
Green, and Oak Grove Manor Nursing Home, Deshler.

attended Regina Coeli Parish, Toledo.

Wilbur W. is the son of Melvin and Lora Gillespie Bassett, grandson of
Burton and Margaret Gillespie and Wilbur and Mary Thomas Basset
descendant of Nymphas Bassett (1821-1880) and of William Bassett who came to
this country in 1621. Siblings: Mildred Harrell Clark (1904-1975), Edythe M.
(908), Carl E. (1913) Ruth B. Cox (1919).
He was born in Marion Township (Oct. 11, 1917) and attended the
Bassett School before moving to Brandywine Township where he helped his father
farm. Part of that farm is now the Fairland Recreation Park where Wilbur owns
a trailer in which hangs a plaque that reads: "I'm fishing now where I used to
plow". Wilbur graduated from Fairland High School in 1935. His service in the
U.S. Army during WWII included serving as a gunnery instructor at F. Know, KY
and as a Tank Commander with the rank of Sergeant in the 780th Amphibious Tank
Battalion in the Asiatic Theater. He is an Inactive Member of the Metropolitan
Indianapolis Board of Realtors and was an active Realtor in the Indianapolis
area for 30 years prior to retirement.
On July 3, 1942, he married Martha Jean Nigh (June 8, 1920), daughter
of Ernest and Ruth Timney Nigh. She graduated from Fairland High School in
1938 and Central Business College in 1939. Ernest, a Fairland High Scho
graduate, was a prominent businessman having been associated with the
Refrigeration Equipment Company of Indianapolis for 20 years. He owned and
operated an appliance store in Fairland. Ruth graduated from Fairland High
School and was active in church and community affairs. She was a member of the

Shelby County Historical Society and was a Gray Lady at Camp Atterbury WWII.
Her father, Frank Timney, was a native of Scotland. He owned and operated a
general store in Fairland.
Martha Jean is the granddaughter of Jaco Stover and Matilda Sleeth
Nigh and Frank and Annie Wray Timney. She is the great-great-great-
granddaughter of James and Tabitha Bass Wray. Her sisters: Julia (1916-1931),
Jeanette (Pat) Brockman (1917-1984).
Children of Wilbur and Martha Jean:
Rosemary (June 20, 1944) Dayton, IN, married Charles P. Caldwell II on
April 10, 1964 in Asmara, Ethiopia. Their children are Ryan Phillip (Dec. 6,
1971) and Shannon Lea (Sept. 1, 1974).
Charlotte Jean (Dec.5, 1947) Indianapolis, IN, married Dennis A. Deeter
on Sept. 1, 1967. Their children are Jeffrey Michael (June 16, 1971) and
Carolyn Nigh (Feb. 3, 1976).
Jane Leigh (July 18, 1954) New Palestine, IN, married James Massey on
Oct. 17, 1985. Their children are Eric Justin (Sept. 20, 1987) and Katherine
Elizabeth (March 6, 1989).

Wilbur W. Bassett

Wilbur W. Bassett, 85, Indianapolis, passed away October 3, 2003. He was born
October 11, 1917 in Shelby Co., IN. He was a graduate of Fairland H.S. and
attended Indiana University. Wilbur was an Army veteran of WWII, serving in
the Pacific. He was a realtor and Sales Manager for Justus Enterprises,
retiring in 1978. He was a member of the Metropolitan Indianapolis Board of
Realtors and was a charter member of the Eastside Multiple Listing
Association. He was a member of Irvington United Methodist Church, Sugar Creek
Masonic Lodge, Scottish Rite, Murat Shrine and American Legion Post #46
Visitation will be Sunday, October 5, from 2 p.m. until 5 p.m. with services
Monday, October 6, at 10 a.m. in Shirley Brothers Washington Memorial Chapel,
9606 E. Washington St. Burial will follow at Forest Hill Cemetery in
Shelbyville. Memorial contributions may be made to American Lung Association.
Survivors include his wife Martha Jean (Nigh) Bassett, daughters Rosema
Caldwell, Charlotte Deeter and Janet Massey, sister Ruth Cox, 7 grandchildren,

3796 WILLIAM BASSETT

A descendant of one of the early pioneer families of Shelby county and
one of the leading farmers and stock raisers of the township in which he
resides. William Bassett is well entitled to notice among the representative
citizens of the county, and it is with much satisfaction that the following
brief outline of his life is accorded a place in these pages. William Bassett
is a native of Shelby county and was born July 19, 1852, on the farm in Marion
township which his grandfather purchased from the government and which has
been in possession of the family from the pioneer period to the present time.
His father was Sylvester Bassett, whose birth occurred on a boat while his
parents were en route from New York to Ohio, and he spent the first six years
of his life in the latter state. At the expiration of that time the family
moved to Shelby county, Indiana, and located in Marion township where t
father of Sylvester entered land and improved a farm, being among the first
permanent settlers of this part of the country.
Sylvester grew to manhood in what is now Marion township, and in due
time became a successful farmer and public-spirited citizen. He was one of the
leading Whig politicians in his part of the country. Later he became an ardent
and influential Republican and for a number of years took an active part in
public affairs and encouraged all enterprises for the material progress of his
township and the welfare of the people. He was born March 24, 1814, and
departed this life on the family homestead in Marion township in the ye
1902.
Susan Monroney, wife of Sylvester Bassett, was born April 15, 1818, in
Dearborn county, Indiana, and was sixteen years old when her parents settled
in Shelby county. She grew to womanhood in Marion township, and December 23,
1837, was united in marriage with Mr. Bassett, the union resulting in t
birth of nine children, eight of whom are still living. Mrs. Bassett's people
originally lived in Virginia, but migrated to Kentucky in a very early day and
from the latter state to Indiana about the year 1824, being among the first
white families to penetrate the forests of what is now Marion township for the
purpose of making improvements. The father came in advance, and after
selecting a location and erecting a cabin, returned to Kentucky for his wife
and children, who accompanied him to the new home in the wilderness the
following year. Mr. Monroney was a true type of the pioneer of the early day,
strong, active, fond of the woods and found his greatest pleasure in hunting
the wild animals with which the country then abounded. He entered la
Marion township now known as the Billman farm and made a number of
improvements and in time became a well-to-do agriculturist and excellent
citizen.
The early life of William Bassett was closely identified with t
closing years of the pioneer period, and while still a youth he experienced
his share of the hard work necessary to the clearing of land and fitting it
for tillage. He attended school for some time, having been a pupil in t
school taught in an old frame house.
Mr. Bassett assisted in the cultivation of the home farm until about
twenty-three years of age, when he left the parental roof and began life for
himself on a part of the same place, choosing for his partner in the
undertaking an excellent young lady by the name of Sarah F. Kaster, who
parents, John and Rebecca (Cook) Kaster, were also early settlers and well
known residents of Marion township. Her grandfather, one of the first white
settlers in the township, was rugged pioneer and fond of hunting. After a few
years on the homestead, Mr. Bassett moved to his present farm, a short
distance south of the former place, where he has since lived and prospered,
making all the improvements on the farm and bringing it to a high state of
cultivation. In connection with agriculture he has devoted considerable
attention to live stock, which has proven quite profitable, and he is now in
independent circumstances, his beautiful and well improved place in section
17, about three miles from Shelbyville, on the Marion township turnpike, being
one of the finest farms and most attractive country homes in Shelby county.
Mrs. Bassett is a native of Shelby county and was born January 15,
1855, and not far from her present place of residence. She has heartily
assisted her husband in all his labors, presided over the home with the
ability characteristic of the true wife and helpmeet, and to her watchful care
and self-denying efforts is due no small part of the success which has
attended the family. Mr. and Mrs. Bassett have three children: Arthur, who was
born October 3, 1876, died September 21, 1897. Chandis, born October 21, 1878,
married Rosa May Crosby, and is farmer of Shelby county and the father of one
child, Francis F. Ora, whose birth occurred March 29, 1882, departed this life
on the 19th day of December following.
Mr. Bassett is a Republican but not an active politician; nevertheless
he manifests a lively interest in public matters and is ever ready to
encourage all legitimate enterprises for the common good. In religion he is a
Baptist and, with his wife, belongs to the First church of that denomination

William Bassett III, son of William and Mary (Rainsford) Bassett, was
born in Sandwich, Massachusetts in 1656. He attained considerable distinction
in the affairs of the colony. He was chosen chief marshall of Plymouth Colony
in 1689, serving until 1692, when the Plymouth and Massachusetts coloni
united. He was a captain of militia and on the council of war at Point
Garrison in 1689. He was a representative from Sandwich both to the general
court in Boston until 1716. He attained the rank of Colonel in the militia. He
was one of the judges of the superior court of Massachusetts 1710-1715, and
subsequently was register of probate. With John Otis and Thomas Smith he was
appointed by the general court in 1697 to investigate and report on the
practicability of building a canal across Cape Cod at Sandwich. He married
Rachel Willison, daughter of Thomas Willison of Taunton, Massachusetts, on 9
Oct 1675. Governor Hinckley was his guardian after his father died. He was an
excellent penman, and wrote a very small, yet distinct and beautiful hand,
easily read. The records show that he was a careful and correct man. He was
the most distinguished of any of the names in Massachusetts. He died in
Sandwich, 29 Sep 1721 in the 65th year of his age. He was a blacksmith.

BASSETT, William, colonist, was born in Sandwich, Mass., in 1656, son
of William and Mary (Burt) Bassett, and grandson of William Bassett, an
Englishman, who emigrated to America from Sandwich, England, with his wife,
Margaret Oldham, in the ship "Fortune" to the Plymouth colony in 1621. He was
the gunsmith for the colony and accumulated a considerable library; he helped
to lay out Dusbury, and subsequently Bridgewater, Mass. His grandson, William
Bassett (3d), attained considerable distinction in the affairs of the colony.
he was chosen chief marshal of Plymouth colony in 1689, serving until 1692,
when the Plymouth and Massachusetts colonies united. He was a captain of

Jonathan, died in infancy. Of these children, William, the second son, served

3798 WILLIAM BURRELL SWEENEY, BIOGRAPHY

Born in Tennessee and came to Texas in 1832. He was the son of John
and Ann Sweeny whose other children were Thomas Jefferson, Jordan W., Benjamin
Franklin, John, S.P., and Sophia. His parents were born in Virginia, but moved
to Tennessee. William B. came to Texas in 1832 and 1833 his father and his
family followed, settling near the present town of West Columbia, Brazoria
County. In Headright Certificate No. 10 issued to William B. Sweeny, by the
Board of Land Commissioners of Brazoria County in 1838 it is simply stated
that he came to Texas prior to May 2, 1835.
In Comptroller's Military Service Record No. 529 it is certified that
William B. and Thomas J. Sweeny served in the army from March 25 to June 5,
1836 and participated in the Battle of San Jacinto. William B. was a member of
Captain Henry W. Karnes' Company of Cavalry. The Land Office records do not
show that he received donation or bounty land for his services in the army. On
page ?? of the army rolls in the General Land Office Mr. Sweeny's name appears
as a member of Captain James L. Holmes Company at Velasco, August 27, 1836.
Mr. Sweeny was married to Elizabeth Newell, who was born in Alabama.
Mrs. Clement N. Bassett, Richmond, Texas wrote to the compiler January 20,
1936 that Mr. Sweeny died in Hays County but that she did not know the date of
his death. His grave is lost.
After the death of Mr. Sweeny his widow was married to Joseph S.
Anderson, by whom two children were born. Mrs. Anderson died in May 1888 and
is buried in a marked grave in the Morton Cemetery in Richmond, Fort Be
County.
Eulora V. Sweeny, a daughter of William B. Sweeny, was married to John
Calhoun Mitchell. Their children were Mrs. Clement N. Bassett, Richmond; and

WEST SPARTA - William Daniel Bassett, 48, of Stoner Hill Rd. in West
Sparta passed away Thursday, Nov. 11, 1999 at Noyes Memorial Hospita
He was born in Warsaw on Sept. 2, 1951, a son of William G. and Betty
Gell Bassett. On May 17, 1997 he was married to Star Hall who survives. He was
employed by Kraft General Foods in Avon for the past 18 year
Surviving in addition to his wife Star and his parents Bill and Betty
are: three sons, Matthew Bassett of Florida, Neill Bassett of Leroy and Corey
Bassett of West Sparta; a daughter Yvonne Harrington of Rochester; a stepson
Erik Luther of Rochester; two stepdaughters, Mary Luther of Rochester a
Sarah Luther of West Sparta; three brothers, Gerald Bassett of Florida, Paul
(Janis) Bassett of Dansville and Alex Bassett of Ossian; two sisters, P
(Louis) Comardo of Dansvville and Sandra Bassett of Rochester, his grandmother
Mary Jane Bassett of Batavia; and several nieces, nephews and many friends.
Friends called Tuesday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 at the Hindle Funeral
Home, 271 Main St., Dansville, where services were held prior to calling hours
at 1 p.m. with the Rev. Jamie Stevens officiating.

The subject of this sketch stands out clear and distinct among the
representative men of his county and state, and by reason of forceful
personality and large success in material things, he has gained a conspicuous
place in the community and is today a leader of thought and in no small degree
a moulder of opinion among those with whom he mingles.
William N. Bassett, a leading farmer and stock raiser of Hanover
township, was born in Shelby county, Indiana, September 2, 1863, being one of
the seven children of James M. and Clara (Norval) Bassett, both parents
natives of the county of Shelby and still living as are also six of the
children - Hays Bassett, the only member of the family deceased, departed this
life at the age of eleven years in 1895.
The early years of William N. Bassett, spent in close touch with
nature on his father's farm, were conducive to vigorous physical and mental
growth, and while still a mere lad he learned the lesson of industry and
frugality, which, with a spirit of self-reliance, had a marked influence in
developing a well rounded character and fixing his future course of life. He
helped clear the home place and cultivate the same, and after finishing the
common school branches entered the schools of Shelbyville where he made rapid
and substantial progress in his studies. Remaining under the parental roof
until attaining his majority, he contributed his full share to the support of
the family, but at the age of twenty-one he severed home ties to s
domestic establishment of his own, choosing for his companion and helpmeet in
the laudable endeavor, an intelligent and popular young lady by the name of
Ona M. Salla, to whom he was married on the 23rd of November, 188
After his marriage Mr. Bassett engaged in agricultural pursuits, which
with stock raising has since demanded his attention, meeting with marked
success in his vocations and as already stated, forging to a leading place
among enterprising and influential men of the township. Since early manhood he
has taken an active part in public affairs, and from 1901 to 1905, inclusive,
he served as Trustee of Hanover township, during which period he was untiring
in his efforts to advance the interests of his jurisdiction and prove an able
and conscientious official. He administered the duties of his office wi
credit to himself and to the acceptance of the people, stood for public
improvements and in addition to his many other functions, erected three modern
school-houses, besides improving many miles of highway.
Mr. Bassett owns a fine farm of three hundred and thirty-eight acres
in all, one mile north of Morristown, and is well situated as far as material
wealth is concerned, being in independent circumstances. Mr. Bassett's home
farm consists of two hundred and forty acres situated one mile north of
Morristown, range 7 east, section 1; twenty-two and one-half acres north in
section 6, and thirty-seven and a half acres in section 7, and thirty-eight
acres in range 8, east. In addition to cultivating his own place, he looks
after the interests of the A. R. Keaton farm of two hundred and fifty acres,
and, until recently, devoted a great deal of attention to buying and selling
live stock, from which he derived no small portion of his income. By reason of
partial disability caused by an injury from a railroad accident, he
discontinued the stock business, and since that year has given his time to
grain farming and dairying, both of which have resulted greatly to his
financial advantage and added very materially to the ample competence now in
his possession. Mr. Bassett is president of the Ripley Farmers' Telepho
Company; also president of the Riverside Gas Company, and is trustee of the
Methodist Episcopal church.
Mr. Bassett is staunchly Republican in his political allegiance and an
influential party worker, being well read on the leading questions of the day,
thoroughly posted on all the leading issues and fully abreast of the times on
all matters of local and general import. Like the majority of public-spirited
men, he is a member of the Masonic Fraternity, belonging to the Blue Lodge, at
Morristown; the Greenfield Chapter Royal Arch Masons, and the Eastern Star, at
the former place, with which his wife and two daughters are also identified,
Mrs. Bassett being now on her third year as worthy matron of the organization.
In addition to the above, Mr. Bassett is an active worker in the Independent
Order of Odd Fellows, having passed all the chairs in subordinate lodge and
encampment; he is also connected with Warren Lodge. No 196, Knights of
Pythias, at Morristown, in which he has been honored from time to time with
every office within the fit of the Brotherhood, besides holding membership
with the Improved Order of Red Men. In religion he has strong convictions and
decided views, being a member of the Methodist Episcopal church and a
contributor to its missions, benevolences and other lines of work. Mrs. Bassett
is also a member of the same religious body, and is deeply interested in the
growth of the local church to which she belongs.
Mr. and Mrs. Bassett are the proud parents of two intelligent a
accomplished daughters and one manly son, the oldest of the number being Mary
E., whose birth occurred on the 12th day of December, 1885. After graduating
from the common schools, she entered the Ohio College of Music and Oratory at
Cincinnati, from which she was graduated with an honorable record as a
musician and elocutionist. Miss Bassett has a high reputation in both these
accomplishments and now holds the position of instructor in the Young Ladies'
College of Music and Elocution at Franklin, Kentucky. Margaret E., born
September 17, 1887, received a high school education at Morristown, and in
1908 was graduated from the Central Normal College at Danville, with degrees
of Bachelor of Science and Bachelor of Arts; meantime she taught very
successfully in the district schools, and since finishing her course in the
above institution has devoted her attention to educational work in Hancock
county. A young lady of fine mind and superior intellectual attainments, she
has already achieved a creditable reputation in her chosen field of endeavor,
and bids fair to rise to still higher achievements and become one of the
accomplished and brilliant teachers of the state.
James N. Bassett, the youngest of the family, was born February 19,
1892, and, like his sisters, takes kindly to books and study, being a student
of the Morristown high school and in the third year of the course. Mr. and
Mrs. Bassett have taken great interest in their children and have spared
neither pains nor expense in providing for their educational training. Their
efforts have been heartily appreciated as the above records attest, and the
satisfaction of knowing that the children have co-operated in bringing about
results so commendable is greater by far than if unbounded material wealth had
been placed at their disposal. The family occupies a prominent position in the
best social circles of the community.
While Mr. Bassett has not pursued the art of money getting, he has by
no means under-estimated the value of material wealth as a means to honorable
ends, and the keen interest he has ever taken in the welfare of those
dependent upon him as well as his efforts to promote the common weal of his
fellow men indicate the high ideals and noble purposes he has ever h
view, notwithstanding which he has not been unmindful of those things which
make for physical comfort and advancement as the ample fortune, conservatively
estimated in excess of forty thousand dollars, abundantly attest.
Melvin and Margaret (Campbell) Salla, parents of Mrs. Bassett, were
prominent residents of Shelby county, the father for many years a leadi
citizen, influential politician and successful farmer of Brandywine township,
where he owned a fine farm of two hundred and five acres, besides valuable
property in Shelbyville and elsewhere. Both husband and wife are dead, but
their memory is affectionately cherished by a grateful posterity, who have
ever aimed to maintain undimmed the honor of the family name. Mrs. Bassett was
born August 18, 1868, and received a liberal education in the public schools
and Oldenburg Academy, being one of the accomplished ladies of Shelby county,
whose beautiful character and many admirable qualities have made her the idol
of her household, besides winning a warm and permanent place in the affections
