Bassett, 385 Grand avenue, died this morning after an illness of several months, at the age of 64 years. Mr. Bassett was born in Canada, coming to Muskegon in 1873. He was married to Miss Mary L. Bassett in 1874. They moved on to Kankakee, Illinois, coming back to Muskegon four years later, where they have since made their home. Mr. Bassett was at one time alderman of this city. He was a member of Lovell Moore lodge No. 182, F. and A.M., and of the Modern Woodmen of America, Camp No. 1975. He leaves nine sons, Louis Bassett of Seattle, Washington; Moses of Hague, North Dakota; Ira, in France; Edward of California; William, Walter, Elmer, Clarence and Herbert, all of this city. Twelve grandchildren and one sister, Mrs. Beaupra of Iowa; Mrs. St. Peter Antigo, of Wisconsin; Mrs. Peter Campbell and Mrs. Champoux, of Muskegon. He leaves also two brothers, John and Joe, both of this city. The funeral announcement will be made later. The Oldest is 25 years and the youngest Three years All But One were Born in Muskegon - Parents of this Interesting Family Were Married in Muskegon September 5, 1874. In the present distinguishing of 'long families' Muskegon has a noteworthy one in the nine sons of Mr. and Mrs. Josephere Bassett, who live at 160 Washington avenue, in this city. Mr. and Mrs. Bassett consider that theirs is the largest family of sons in Muskegon city and Muskegon county and the Chronicle today presents to its readers this interesting group of advancing citizens. They number: William, aged 25; Edwin, age 21; Walter, aged 18; Elmer, aged 17; Louis, aged 15; Moses, aged 12, Ira, age 9; Clarence aged 6 and Herbert, aged 3. All of these are native sons of Muskegon but William who was born in St. Mary, Kankakee county, Ill. Mr. and Mrs. Bassett, the parents of this interesting family, were married in Muskegon September 5, 1874. Mrs. Bassett maiden name was the same as her present one, Mary L. Bassett, although there was no relation between her's and her husband's families. Her parents were old residents of Muskegon, coming here from Malone, N.Y., forty years ago, and her grandparents lived in Canada. Although Mrs. Bassett has spent most of her life in Muskegon, Mr. Bassett only came to this city in the spring of 1874 from Kankakee, Ill., a few months before their marriage. Mr. Bassett was born in Canada, and when six months old his parents moved to Kankakee, Ill., taking him with them. Bot Mr. Bassett and Mrs. Bassett are of French ancestry and both of them come of large families. Mrs. Bassett was one of eight daughters and two sons, and has three sisters living in Muskegon at the present time. Mr. Bassett came of a family of five sons and five daughters and has three sisters living in Bluffton today. After their marriage he and his wife moved immediately to his former home in Kankakee where they remained five years. They then returned to Muskegon and have lived here ever since. Mr. Bassett is a laboring man and last winter worked in the rolling mill. Previous to that he was employed in the Grand Rapids Desk Co.'s factory. The nine sons of this remarkable family are all stalwart and sturdy young men and boys and a rich possession to their parents and to their state. The four older are cabinet makers. William is at present employed at the Gray Mfg. Co.'s works. Edwin and Walter follow their trade in Grand Rapids. Elmer labors at the Grand Rapids Desck Co.'s factory. Louis worked on a machine at the Alaska Refrigerator Co.'s. Moses attends school in the Sixth grade at the McLaughlin building. Ira is in the Third grade at the McLaughlin school. Clarence is in the first grade at the McLaughlin and Herbert stays at home, and according to his parents, rules the house. There was also a daughter at one time who died ten years ago at the age of 14 years. Only one of the sons is married, Edwin, who on February 19 of this year, wedded Miss Maggie Ferguson of this city. January 28, 2021 SUFFOLK--Kenneth "KB" Graham Bass, 74, passed away peacefully in his home on January 28, 2021. He fought a good fight, battling through a long illness, and is now resting in peace. He was born in Wilmington, North Carolina and graduated from Wilson High School in 1964. Kenny enjoyed a long career at the Norfolk Naval Shipyard, finally retiring after over 30 years, after having received multiple awards during his time there. He served as an Auxiliary Portsmouth Police Officer for two years and in the National Guard for six years. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus and the Simonsdale Teen Club. Kenny spent his youth passionately playing baseball and then transitioned to playing softball in his adult years. He enjoyed the game and spent many hours on the field making lifelong friends through various teams he was a part of. He enjoyed the game of golf, playing in golf tournaments and going to Myrtle Beach for golf getaways with the guys. And if you were fortunate enough to have been given a watercolor painting by Kenny, keep it, because there will never be another. He was quite the talented watercolor artist! Kenny loved Elvis, hanging out on the swing in his yard with friends and family, tinkering in the garage, and a '66 Corvette. Kenny is survived by his loving wife of 17 years, Barbara Bass, who will miss him greatly. He is predeceased by his father, Graham Laymond Bass, and mother, Hazel Hammond Fowler. Clara spent countless hours volunteering her time to her community through Eastern Star, 2002-2014 serving the Florala Housing Authority, serving as their chairperson from 2008-2014 and being Florala's Judge Magistrate until ill health forced her retirement. Clara's biggest legacy, however was the immeasurable mark she left on her husband, children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. Known to them as Clara, Mom, and Granny, she will forever hold a dear and precious place in each of their hearts. Bradrick Layne Wolfe, 47, of Marshville, was charged with two counts of first-degree murder, said Sheriff Eddie Cathey. Cathey said deputies were called to a home near Marshville and found two men shot to death in the driveway. The victims have been identified as Wolfe?s father-in-law, David Lee Bass, and the suspect?s brother-in-law, David Clay Bass. A North Carolina Highway Patrol trooper spotted the suspect?s motorcycle a short time later in Anson County and began chasing him. Cathey says several other people were at the home and saw the shooting. He says the shooting apparently resulted from an argument. | 3894 | Harrison Bassett Wood, Jr. August 9, 1920 ? September 17, 2014 HARRISON BASSETT WOOD, JR. passed away peacefully on Wednesday, September 17, 2014 at the age of 94. Harry was born August 9, 1920 in Jacksonville, Florida to parents Ethel and Harrison Wood, Sr. As a Veteran of World War II, he served four years of active duty and remained in the Naval Reserves for the next 17 years, retiring with the rank of Lieutenant. After the war, he attended the University of Florida, graduating in 1952 with a Bachelor of Engineering degree. While at the University of Florida Harry was elected to Phi Kappa Phi, an honorary scholastic fraternity. After graduating, he joined Union Carbide Company, working in the Y-12 facility at Oak Ridge National Laboratory. He then joined ITT Rayonier in 1954 as an engineer at its Fernandina Beach, Florida pulp mill. Over the next thirty years, he held numerous positions with increasing levels of responsibility. These included manager of the Jesup, Georgia mill division, heading up a special technical task force for the Rayonier mill in Port Cartier, Quebec, assistant manager of Southeast Regional Operations, and corporate vice president, director of manufacturing services. In 1985 Harry retired and moved to Athens, Georgia where he and his wife Yvonne spent the next 29 years. In April of this year, they moved to Little Rock, Arkansas to be closer to family. During his retirement, Harry enjoyed hunting and fishing but developed a passion for collecting, refinishing and restoring antique clocks. He was a past member of the National Association of Watch and Clock Collectors and the Athens Area Military Officers Association of America. Harry is preceded in death by his parents; younger brother, Ray Wood; younger sisters, Helen Brink and Virginia Read; and his oldest daughter, Linda Parmenter. He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Yvonne Limbaugh Wood of Little Rock, Arkansas; his younger brother, Carl Wood of Franklin, Tennessee; son and daughter-in-law, David and Michelle Wood of Mountain View, California; daughter and son-in-law, Susan Page and Hank Page of Little Rock, Arkansas; son-in-law, Guy Parmenter of Cartersville, Georgia; grandchildren, Stuart Parmenter, Andrew Parmenter, Julie Parmenter, Catherine Wood Hill, Matthew Wood, Walker Page and Helen Page; and three great-grandchildren. A graveside service with military honors will be held at 2pm, September 23, 2014 at Riverwood Memorial Gardens in Maumelle, Arkansas. Also surviving are his wife, Ruth Tillman Bassett; a sister, Mrs. Ida Christner; several nieces and nephews. His father was Charles too, a Chimney Sweeper, and his Mother’s name was Lucy. Charles was born in a stable, not just any stable, but the Chequer Stable in the village of High Halden fourteen miles south-east of Maidstone in the County of Kent. There was no room at the inn for Charles and Lucy for they were paupers and it is likely that the high men of High Halden hurried them on their way as soon as Lucy was able to travel least they become a charge upon the parish. At the age of seven Charles was enlisted in the West Kent Militia on the 26th day of August 1796 at Brighton. Two years later the Regiment was posted to Ireland to aid in suppression of the rebellion. 19 Drummer Boys were included in the force which was present at the hanging of two rebels in Wicklow. Charles served for twelve years and sixty-one days as a drummer boy and a further five years and eight months as a private before being promoted to Corporal. Charles was a small man – five feet five and one half inches in height – with light brown hair and grey eyes and a fair complexion. In June 1808 the regiment marched to Newcastle-upon-Tyne and in November moved to Sunderland. Here Charles met Ann Walker and they were married in St. Michael and All Angels Church in Bishopwearmouth on 8th May 1809. Lucy Bassett (Charles Sister?) and Elizabeth Walker were witnesses. On the 12th October 1809 the regiment moved again this time to Tynemouth and it was here that their first child, a girl, was born on 17th February 1810. She was christened Harriet Walker Bassett on 25th March 1810 in Christ Church, North Shields. In May 1810 the regiment were on the move again marching across the country to Hull in Yorkshire. After a two year sojourn in the land of green ginger they went to Leeds, finally returning to Kent in 1814. In June of that year the regiment was disbanded. Charles however remained an enlisted man until 1829 when having served 33 years he was discharged on 11th May. His long service record is summed up on his discharge papers in one word “Good”. In addition to Harriet we know the names of four other children of Charles and Ann. He was a retired employee of the Springfield Armory, beginning there as a messenger boy 51 years ago. He retired in September, 1955, as chief of the production planning department. He was a member of St. Therese’s Church and of its Holy Name Society, and was retired treasurer of the 20-Year Club of the Springfield Armory. Survivors are his wife, Mrs. Emma (Gauthier) Bessette; one son, Albert J., of Agawam; two sisters, Mrs. Ovelene Dufresne of West Springfield and Mrs. Joseph Elroy of Agawam; one step-brother, Moses Bessette of Agawam; three step-sisters, Mrs. Elise Gosselin of Baltimore, Md., Mrs. Louise Dwyer of Springfield and Sister Mary Edith of the Presentation of Mary Order, Canada.
