He died Monday, Aug. 17, 2009, at Twinbrook Nursing Home, Louisville. He was retired from the A&P Warehouse and was also a USDA inspector. A Navy veteran, he was a member of St. Ignatius Matyr Catholic Church and the Hidden Treasures Club at the church, and was an auxiliary member of St. Vincent de Paul Society. Survivors include his wife, the former Barbara Ann Richards; children, Robert "Keith" Bass and his wife, Barbara, Kevin Louis Bass and his wife, Cindy, Kathleen Walther and her husband, Eugene, and Kimberly Bottoms and her husband, Larry; granddaughters, Brittany, Robin, Amber, Olivia, and Alyson; half-sister, Judy Becker; and two nephews. He was preceded in death by his brother, Kenneth Bass; and grandson, Hamilton Bass. Visitation will be at Ratterman and Sons Funeral Home, 3800 Bardstown Road, Louisville, from noon to 8 p.m. Friday. Mrs. Bassett was born November 25, 1913 in Holly, MI, the daughter of James and Lydia Covert. She received a Teaching Certificate, after which she earned a Masters Degree at the University of Michigan. She taught public school in Hastings, and for 30 years in the Kalamazoo Public School System. She was a member of the Westwood United Methodist church, the Retired Teachers Association, and a former member of the Etude Society. She was preceded in death by her husband, Reid A. Bassett; and by a brother, Harold Hayner. Surviving are a daughter, Mary Jane Mayne of Kalamazoo; and a grandson, Joseph Reid Mayne and wife, Elizabeth of Auburn Hills, MI. Private interment services will take place at Mt. Ever-Rest Cemetery followed by a Memorial Service at 11:00 o'clock Wednesday at the Westwood United Methodist Church, 538 Nichols Rd., with the Rev. Mr. Eric S. Beck officiating. In lieu of flowers the family suggests that memorial contributions be made to the Westwood United Methodist Church. | 3903 | MRS. MARY CLEMENTINE HAILE BASSETT PASSES, Washtucna, Feb. 19 Services at United Presbyterian Church; burial at Walla Walla. Mrs. Mary Clementine Haile Bassett, prominent pioneer, church and community worker, friend to rich and poor alike, who has lived in Washtucna the past 33 years, was called by the angel of death at 3:30 am., Friday. Funeral services were held at the United Presbyterian church Tuesday morning at 10. The Reverend R.H. Gordon officiated. The body was laid to rest in the family plot at Walla Walla, WA. Six charter members of the Washtucna chapter of Eastern Star, Mrs. J.W. Sitton, Mrs. J.H. Gill, Mrs. Art Shugart, Mrs. Levi Sutton, Mrs. J.C. Nunamaker and Mrs. John Nunamaker acting as honorary pall-bearers. An acute heart attack was the direct cause of her death. She was born in Billing Missouri, in 1877, coming to Washtucna in 1898 and was 54 years of age at her passing. Among her fraternal affiliations were the Eastern Star, of which she was charter member, the Royal Neighbors, the U.P. Missionary society and the Ladies of the Round Table club. She is survived by her husband, L.L., prominent hardware merchant and for many years mayor of Washtucna; a so Robert H. of Los Angeles; three daughters, Esther of Washtucna, Gertrude, Mrs. Loyd Bury, of Pullman, and Louise, now a student at W.S.C. She is also survived by three sisters, Mrs. Nanie Saul, Tulsa OK; Mrs. Meda Willis, Chandler, OK, and Mrs. G.W. Volz, of Long Beach, CA, and by three brothers. A.J. and W.W. Haile, Spokane, and Daniel Haile, Portland. While Mrs. Bassett has been in ill health for a number of years, she had that indomitable courage that no amount of ill fortune could down, making her death a complete shock to the community of which she was an integral part. She always rose to the occasion, whatever it might be, good or ill, and there is hardly a family in the community who is not indebted to her for past kindnesses. | 3904 | Northwest Iowa Conference Journal, 1958, p. 248.(United Methodist Church) Thaddeus Stevens Bassett Thaddeus Stevens Bassett was born on September 29, 1868, in Blairstown, Iowa. After having been a printer and farm laborer, he attended Cornell College and graduated in 1893. Shortly thereafter, on October 1 1893, he married Miss Emma O. Naumann, who had been a fellow student at Cornell. In September of the same year, he had joined the Northwest Iowa Conference and, except for two years, was to remain a member of that Conference and its successor North Iowa Conference throughout his life. He later attended Iliff School of Theology and many years later was given the honorary degree of Doctor of Divinity by Cornell College. In Northwest Iowa the family lived in the various communities of Jolley, Newell, Graettinger, Wall Lake, Onawa, Sheldon, Manson, Clear Lake, Primghar, Hartley, Inwood, Sioux City, Rolfe, Marathon, and Goldfiel addition to his various pastorates, Dr. Bassett served at different times as Secretary of the Conference Claimants Pension Fund; Field Secretary of the Iowa Methodist Hospital in Des Moines, and for the six years from 1925 to 1931 as Superintendent of the Sioux City District. After retirement in 1942, he spent six years with the Goodwill Industries of Sioux City. At the time that Friendship Haven was opened in Fort Dodge, he went there as Chaplain and was active in that capacity as long as his health permitted. Death came to him at his Friendship Haven home on February 8, 1958, and he was buried at Graceland Park Cemetery in Sioux City, Iow Mrs. Bassett preceded her husband in death in May of 1939. Two sons survive, Thaddeus B. Bassett of Manhasset, New York, and H.N. Bassett of Washington, D.C. These words written at the time of his retirement tell us of the many accomplishments of a long and useful ministry: "In the earlier years, he held charges that were semi-pionee later years he built churches, remodeled parsonages, conducted revival meetings, won youth and adults to the Christian life, strengthened the believers, and led young men into the ministry. He was selected by the conference to be its secretary for five successive years; he was the leader in the establishing of the Minister's Pension Fund, raising the first $100,000; he served a term of six years as Superintendent of the Sioux City District, while in that office he dedicated the Methodist Hospital, the Women's Dormitory, and Wall Street Mission, and was trustee of Morningside College, the Methodist Hospital, the Pension Fund, and President of the Conference Board of Missions." | Bassett, Thaddeus Stevens (I14769)

| 3905 | South Dakota History, Volume 42, No. 3 Page 212 Fellow Sioux Falls resident Alice E. Bassett gained admissions to the bar six months after Rochford. Born in April of 1867 near Fond du Lac, Wisconsin, Bassett was the youngest child of Ira Norton Bassett, a Civil War veteran who died when Alice was young, and Betsey Babcock Bassett. In her early twenties, after graduation from Jennings Seminary in Aurora, Illinois, Bassett came to Sioux Falls, first working as a teacher then as a stenographer in the law office of Charles P. Bates, where she pursued her legal studies. On 5 April 1898, she successfully passed the examination before the South Dakota Supreme Court and was admitted to practice. As a licensed lawyer, the Sioux Falls newspapers reported, Bassett tried cases and gave legal advice to a number of clients. She preferred teaching and stenographic work, however, and began a business school, giving private evening instruction before establishing her school of stenography and typewriting in the Minnehaha building in Sioux Falls. On 2 January 1900, she married lawyer Henry August Muller. ?A lawyer has an opportunity almost equal with that of the clergy along the line of helpful and upbuilding influence upon mankind?, Alice Bassett Muller declared. She named as necessary qualifications fo the job the ability to think quickly and clearly on one?s feet, good health, and kindness and sympathy. Childless herself, she identified the conflict between career and family as the primary limitation for a woman lawyer. ?To succeed,? Muller asserted, ?a woman should devote all of her time to her profession, which would bar her from rearing a family and devoting herself to her home.? She described her work in 1920 as a combination of law, stenographic reporting, and teaching, taking any kind of work that came to her and making from two to four thousand dollars a year. As a stenographer, Muller regularly took down the proceedings at various state conventions, among them the bankers association and education association, and reported numerous political addresses, including several by William Jennings Bryan. She was the official reporter for the Department of South Dakota Grand Army of the Republic. At the time of her death on 13 April 1926, she had nearly finished compiling a history of the department, having severed as its historian for three decades. The five-hundred-page volume contained data on thousands of South Dakota?s veterans. Muller was known for her charitable work and civic involvement. She played an active role in the organization of the Sioux Falls Humane Society, for which she served as secretary, and the Business and Professional Women?s Club. She was also closely involved in church work, the YMCA, and the Prisoner?s Welfare Society. She was born in Ohio and moved to Indiana, then to Sioux Falls. She w "counselor at law" and operated Muller's Business School. She was prominent in the state Business & Professional Women's Association (one time president, another time secretary). At the time of her death she was writing "a history of the Grand Army of the Republic". She was a court stenographer for ma years. She belonged to the First Christian Church, the local YMCA, and secretary of Humane Society. At one time she was a school teacher. In 1900, she went to Lafayette, Indiana to marry Mr. Muller. He was a Korean and Vietnam veteran, having retired form the U.S. Marines in 1971, with 20 years service. During his military service he was awarded the National Defense Service Metal W/2; Vietnam Campaign Medal W/device, Good Conduct Metal W/4; Presidental Unit Citation; and Meritorious Unit Citation. He also retired form the Government Civil Service with 22 years of service with the U.S. Marine Corps and Dept. of the Navy. He loved his church and previously served as Deacon. He loved all sports especially the ECU Pirates. He was an avid bowler and especially enjoyed the comradeship with all his bowling friends. Funeral service will be held at 7 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 15 followed by visitation at Beulaville Presbyterian Church, Beulaville. | 3911 | History of Franklin, Jefferson, Washington, Crawford and Gasconade Counties, Missouri (Part 2) 1888 Rowland Bass, of the firm of Taylor & Bass, liverymen of Cuba, is the fourth of the seven children of Thomas and Sarah (Gibson) Bass, and was born in Crawford County, Mo., January 11, 1857. He received a good common-school education, and when of age began doing for himself. In 1880 he married Sarah, daughter of John Pinson, and to this union has been born two children. viz.: Claude and John L. After his marriage Mr. Bass conducted a livery stable in Steelville in partnership with his brother, Thomas, also paying some attention to the pursuit of agriculture. He also engaged in the hotel business at Steelville, and by close attention to his business he was very successful. The present firm of Taylor & Bass was established in 1886: both are energetic business men and are doing a good business. Politically, Mr. Bass is a Democrat. He was born in the Rosewood Community near Goldsboro. He graduated from Rosewood High School and attended Kings Business College in Raleigh. He worked as a CPA in Charlotte. He volunteered for the Army with the rank of Staff Sergeant in World War II in the European Theater. He received an AA degree from Louisburg Junior College in 1949. While at Louisburg, he met Emma Deane Simmons from Burgaw and they married in 1948. He received an AB degree from Woodard College in 1951. He received a BD degree from Duke Divinity School in 1954. He was an elder in the North Carolina Methodist Conference for 19 years serving as minister of several charges. He took a sabbatical and located at Lakewood United Methodist Church for his children to finish high school. He taught fo 17 years in the Durham Schools and retired in 1986 from both from both the school system and the NC Conference of the UMC. He is preceded in death by his parents, V. Needham Bass and Smithie Elizabeth "Bessie" Herring Bass; four brothers, Eddison Bass of Farmville, DeWitt Bass of Wilmington, Wesley Bass of Rosewood, Milton E. Bass(twin) of Durham, one sister, Smithie Elizabeth "Beth" Olson of Fayetteville. He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Emma Simmons Bass; his son, W. Needham Bass, Jr and wife, Phyllis King Bass of Durham; grandson, Jonathan Bass of Atlanta, GA. Mrs. Carrie Bassett, 79, prominent in Fennville activities for fifty years, died at the Community hospital in Douglas this morning, 10:30 a.m. She had been confined to the hospital for three weeks with a broken hip. She was born July 14, 1864, in the vicinity of Allegan, the only child of Mr. and Mrs. Harry J. Kingsley, who are both deceased. The deceased was married to Charles E. Bassett, of Allegan, soon after he established the Fennville Herald Newspaper in 1892. About 1915, they and their daughter, Marcia and Mrs. and Mrs. Kingsley, moved to Washington, D.C. and Chicago, where Mr. Bassett held a position in the Department of Agriculture for five years. They then returned to Fennville where they built up the Kingsley-Bassett farm. Mr. Bassett died about eight years ago. The deceased was postmaster of Fennville; life member of Bethel chapter of Eastern Stat, of which she held the office of worthy matron; past president of Allegan association of OES; president two years of Fennville Womans club; and president of the Allegan County Federation. She lived on the farm with her son-in-law Clare A. Arnold prior to her death, whose wife, Marcia died three years ago. Beside her son-in-law she leaves a cousin, Fred Kingsley of Millgrove and other distant relatives. Funeral services are to be held at the home, Monday, 2 p.m. and interment will be in Fennville Cemetery. The News-Palladium, Benton Harbor, Michigan, Wednesday, June 7, 1944 Bassett Funeral Held in Fennville Home FENNVILLE, June 7 ? Funeral services for Mrs. Charles E. Bassett who died early Saturday morning at Community hospital, Douglas, were held from her home Monday at 2 p.m. Mrs. Bassett was active all of her adult life in many social, church, and fraternal activities of the community. She was married Sept. 2, 1892, to Charles E. Bassett who came here from Allegan and founded the Fennville Herald just six months prior to their marriage and in publication of which she assisted as associated editor. Officiating at the services were the Rev. Fr. J. Ethan Allen of All Saints Episcopal church in Saugatuck, former pastor of the Church of the Good Shepherd of Allegan, of which Mrs. Bassett was a member, assisted by the Rev. O.W. Carr of the Fennville Methodist church. Casket bearers were brothers of Bethel chapter, O.E.S, Charles Green, William Van Hartesveldt, Sr., Robert Keag, Nelson Warren, E.J. Meles, and Henry Johnson. Those from away attending the services included Mrs. Franc Chaddock, Mr. and Mrs. Ned Killian, Mrs. Claud Firestone of Allegan, Mr. and Mrs. Dan Arnlod of Plainwell, Miss Nina Bassett and Miss Bertha Billings of Grand Rapids; also Mr. and Mrs. Fred Kingsley of Millgrove. The History of Western Allegan County, Kit Lane, Project Director Kingsley - Bassett Family F476 Eliza J. and Harvey J. Kingsley came to Allegan from Ohio and later to Fennville. They owned a large farm which extended from 58th Street on the west to what is now the LaSalle bank property. They had one daughter, Carrie, who married Charlie Bassett in 1892. Charlie and Carrie started the Fennville Herald. They had one daughter, Marcia, who married my father, Clare Arnold, who was a widower, my mother, Nina V. (Bale Arnold having died in 1932). When the fires raged across southwest Michigan in 1871, the same time as the Chicago fire, the Kingsleys buried their possessions in a pit on this farm. Bassett, 385 Grand avenue, died this morning after an illness of several months, at the age of 64 years. Mr. Bassett was born in Canada, coming to Muskegon in 1873. He was married to Miss Mary L. Bassett in 1874. They moved on to Kankakee, Illinois, coming back to Muskegon four years later, where they have since made their home. Mr. Bassett was at one time alderman of this city. He was a member of Lovell Moore lodge No. 182, F. and A.M., and of the Modern Woodmen of America, Camp No. 1975. He leaves nine sons, Louis Bassett of Seattle, Washington; Moses of Hague, North Dakota; Ira, in France; Edward of California; William, Walter, Elmer, Clarence and Herbert, all of this city. Twelve grandchildren and one sister, Mrs. Beaupra of Iowa; Mrs. St. Peter Antigo, of Wisconsin; Mrs. Peter Campbell and Mrs. Champoux, of Muskegon. He leaves also two brothers, John and Joe, both of this city. The funeral announcement will be made later. The Oldest is 25 years and the youngest Three years All But One were Born in Muskegon - Parents of this Interesting Family Were Married in Muskegon September 5, 1874. In the present distinguishing of 'long families' Muskegon has a noteworthy one in the nine sons of Mr. and Mrs. Josephere Bassett, who live at 160 Washington avenue, in this city. Mr. and Mrs. Bassett consider that theirs is the largest family of sons in Muskegon city and Muskegon county and the Chronicle today presents to its readers this interesting group of advancing citizens. They number: William, aged 25; Edwin, age 21; Walter, aged 18; Elmer, aged 17; Louis, aged 15; Moses, aged 12, Ira, age 9; Clarence aged 6 and Herbert, aged 3. All of these are native sons of Muskegon but William who was born in St. Mary, Kankakee county, Ill. Mr. and Mrs. Bassett, the parents of this interesting family, were married in Muskegon September 5, 1874. Mrs. Bassett maiden name was the same as her present one, Mary L. Bassett, although there was no relation between her's and her husband's families. Her parents were old residents of Muskegon, coming here from Malone, N.Y., forty years ago, and her grandparents lived in Canada. Although Mrs. Bassett has spent most of her life in Muskegon, Mr. Bassett only came to this city in the spring of 1874 from Kankakee, Ill., a few months before their marriage. Mr. Bassett was born in Canada, and when six months old his parents moved to Kankakee, Ill., taking him with them. Bot Mr. Bassett and Mrs. Bassett are of French ancestry and both of them come of large families. Mrs. Bassett was one of eight daughters and two sons, and has three sisters living in Muskegon at the present time. Mr. Bassett came of a family of five sons and five daughters and has three sisters living in Bluffton today. After their marriage he and his wife moved immediately to his former home in Kankakee where they remained five years. They then returned to Muskegon and have lived here ever since. Mr. Bassett is a laboring man and last winter worked in the rolling mill. Previous to that he was employed in the Grand Rapids Desk Co.'s factory. The nine sons of this remarkable family are all stalwart and sturdy young men and boys and a rich possession to their parents and to their state. The four older are cabinet makers. William is at present employed at the Gray Mfg. Co.'s works. Edwin and Walter follow their trade in Grand Rapids. Elmer labors at the Grand Rapids Desck Co.'s factory. Louis worked on a machine at the Alaska Refrigerator Co.'s. Moses attends school in the Sixth grade at the McLaughlin building. Ira is in the Third grade at the McLaughlin school. Clarence is in the first grade at the McLaughlin and Herbert stays at home, and according to his parents, rules the house. There was also a daughter at one time who died ten years ago at the age of 14 years. Only one of the sons is married, Edwin, who on February 19 of this year, wedded Miss Maggie Ferguson of this city. January 28, 2021 SUFFOLK--Kenneth "KB" Graham Bass, 74, passed away peacefully in his home on January 28, 2021. He fought a good fight, battling through a long illness, and is now resting in peace. He was born in Wilmington, North Carolina and graduated from Wilson High School in 1964. Kenny enjoyed a long career at the Norfolk Naval Shipyard, finally retiring after over 30 years, after having received multiple awards during his time there. He served as an Auxiliary Portsmouth Police Officer for two years and in the National Guard for six years. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus and the Simonsdale Teen Club. Kenny spent his youth passionately playing baseball and then transitioned to playing softball in his adult years. He enjoyed the game and spent many hours on the field making lifelong friends through various teams he was a part of. He enjoyed the game of golf, playing in golf tournaments and going to Myrtle Beach for golf getaways with the guys. And if you were fortunate enough to have been given a watercolor painting by Kenny, keep it, because there will never be another. He was quite the talented watercolor artist! Kenny loved Elvis, hanging out on the swing in his yard with friends and family, tinkering in the garage, and a '66 Corvette. Kenny is survived by his loving wife of 17 years, Barbara Bass, who will miss him greatly. He is predeceased by his father, Graham Laymond Bass, and mother, Hazel Hammond Fowler. He is also survived by his son Kenny Bass, Jr, and wife Teresa; Ogie Parker and wife Deedee; Robbie Parker and girlfriend Christine; and daughter Vickie Frye and husband David; his sister Judy Casarotti and husband Mike; and stepsisters Teresa and Linda; his grandchildren Jonathan Bass and wife Amy, Jeremy Bass, Kelsie Parker and husband Ben, David Frye III, McKenzie Palumbo and husband Galvin, and Alexis Frye. The Rev. Robert H. Stromberg performed the ceremony in white-gladioli-decorated St. Paul?s Lutheran Church, Procter, Vt. A reception was given by the bride?s parents, Mr. and Mrs. Albert Sven Nelson of Proctor, in Mountain Top Inn, Chittenden, Vt. The gown previously was worn by the bridegroom?s sisters, Mrs. Russell Barr McKillen of Toledo, O.; Mrs. Paul U. Bretschger and Mrs. Edward F. McGinley III, and also by his sister-in-law, Mrs. Kingman Bassett, at their marriages. Styled on fitted lines with tiny self-covered buttons on the basque, the dress has a full skirt and court train. Seed pearl embroidery accents the pattern of the brocade. Facing the neckline is rose point lace which the bridegroom?s father brought to his mother after World War I. A cap of matching lace held a fingertip illusion veil. The bride carried a cascade of white pompons, gladioli and stephanotis. Mrs. Donald W. Anderson of Upper Montclair, N.J., cousin of the bride and matron of honor, wore a blue, sheer, waltz-length gown. A circular panel fell from a bow at the back of the Empire waistline. She chose a velvet Alsatian bow headpiece and a cascade bouquet of yellow and bronze-color pompons. In ensembles of the same style in a blending shade of blue the other attendant were Mrs. Robert I. Bergreen of Allegany, a classmate of the bride in Elmira College, and Miss Louise B. Olney, Hartford, Conn. Ensign William B. Bassett, USN, whose marriage took place in Washington, Aug. 11, was best man for his brother. Ushers were Kingman Bassett and Mr. McKillen. Alison N. Anderson of Upper Montclair was flower girl, and William M. Bretschger, son of Mr. and Mrs. Bretschger, a page boy. The bride?s mother chose a rose-color silk organza dress with Chantilly lace applique over mauve taffeta. She wore white accessories and wine-color pompons. The bridegroom?s mother favored a toast-color lace, sheath-style dress with toast-color accessories and brimmed hat of jade-green velvet. She wore yellow glamellias. For traveling to Canada the bride selected a black and brown plaid sheath jacket dress and white pompons.
