She was born in Paxton on April 3, 1924 to Wesley J McVay and Clara Wright McVay. Clara was a lifelong member of the First Assembly of God Church in Florala serving as Choir Director, Sunday School Secretary and Vacation Bible School Coordinator. She was a dedicated community leader. Clara spent countless hours volunteering her time to her community through Eastern Star, 2002-2014 serving the Florala Housing Authority, serving as their chairperson from 2008-2014 and being Florala's Judge Magistrate until ill health forced her retirement. Clara's biggest legacy, however was the immeasurable mark she left on her husband, children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. Known to them as Clara, Mom, and Granny, she will forever hold a dear and precious place in each of their hearts. She was preceded in death by father, Wesley J McVay; mother, Clara Wright McVay; brothers, W.J. McVay Jr, Floyd McVay and Ace McVay sisters, Mildred Barton; Marie Boykin; Winona Rentz. She is survived by her husband of 73 years, H.O. Bass Jr of Florala, daughter, Ree Strickland and husband Billy, sons, Clyde Bass and wife Dolores and John Bass Sr, grandchildren Tracy, Todd, Beth, Jessica and John Bass Jr, great grandchildren, Finngan, Ryder, Emmy, Clover, John and Ellie, sisters, Juanita Johnson and Emma Jean Shaw. She is also survived by an abundance of extended love ones including numerous nieces and nephews. | 3959 | Fox News Two Killed in Union County; one arrested August 22, 2012 MARSHVILLE, N.C. ? Two men were killed and a third is arrested after a shooting Tuesday night in Union County. Bradrick Layne Wolfe, 47, of Marshville, was charged with two counts of first-degree murder, said Sheriff Eddie Cathey. Cathey said deputies were called to a home near Marshville and found two men shot to death in the driveway. The victims have been identified as Wolfe?s father-in-law, David Lee Bass, and the suspect?s brother-in-law, David Clay Bass. A North Carolina Highway Patrol trooper spotted the suspect?s motorcycle a short time later in Anson County and began chasing him. Cathey says several other people were at the home and saw the shooting. He says the shooting apparently resulted from an argument. | 3964 | Harrison Bassett Wood, Jr. August 9, 1920 ? September 17, 2014 HARRISON BASSETT WOOD, JR. passed away peacefully on Wednesday, September 17, 2014 at the age of 94. Harry was born August 9, 1920 in Jacksonville, Florida to parents Ethel and Harrison Wood, Sr. As a Veteran of World War II, he served four years of active duty and remained in the Naval Reserves for the next 17 years, retiring with the rank of Lieutenant. After the war, he attended the University of Florida, graduating in 1952 with a Bachelor of Engineering degree. While at the University of Florida Harry was elected to Phi Kappa Phi, an honorary scholastic fraternity. After graduating, he joined Union Carbide Company, working in the Y-12 facility at Oak Ridge National Laboratory. He then joined ITT Rayonier in 1954 as an engineer at its Fernandina Beach, Florida pulp mill. Over the next thirty years, he held numerous positions with increasing levels of responsibility. These included manager of the Jesup, Georgia mill division, heading up a special technical task force for the Rayonier mill in Port Cartier, Quebec, assistant manager of Southeast Regional Operations, and corporate vice president, director of manufacturing services. In 1985 Harry retired and moved to Athens, Georgia where he and his wife Yvonne spent the next 29 years. In April of this year, they moved to Little Rock, Arkansas to be closer to family. During his retirement, Harry enjoyed hunting and fishing but developed a passion for collecting, refinishing and restoring antique clocks. He was a past member of the National Association of Watch and Clock Collectors and the Athens Area Military Officers Association of America. Harry is preceded in death by his parents; younger brother, Ray Wood; younger sisters, Helen Brink and Virginia Read; and his oldest daughter, Linda Parmenter. He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Yvonne Limbaugh Wood of Little Rock, Arkansas; his younger brother, Carl Wood of Franklin, Tennessee; son and daughter-in-law, David and Michelle Wood of Mountain View, California; daughter and son-in-law, Susan Page and Hank Page of Little Rock, Arkansas; son-in-law, Guy Parmenter of Cartersville, Georgia; grandchildren, Stuart Parmenter, Andrew Parmenter, Julie Parmenter, Catherine Wood Hill, Matthew Wood, Walker Page and Helen Page; and three great-grandchildren. A graveside service with military honors will be held at 2pm, September 23, 2014 at Riverwood Memorial Gardens in Maumelle, Arkansas. Also surviving are his wife, Ruth Tillman Bassett; a sister, Mrs. Ida Christner; several nieces and nephews. A service was conducted last Wednesday in the Vay and Schleich Funeral Home in Rochester, followed by Mass of Christian Burial in St. Charles Booromeo Church in that city. His father was Charles too, a Chimney Sweeper, and his Mother’s name was Lucy. Charles was born in a stable, not just any stable, but the Chequer Stable in the village of High Halden fourteen miles south-east of Maidstone in the County of Kent. There was no room at the inn for Charles and Lucy for they were paupers and it is likely that the high men of High Halden hurried them on their way as soon as Lucy was able to travel least they become a charge upon the parish. At the age of seven Charles was enlisted in the West Kent Militia on the 26th day of August 1796 at Brighton. Two years later the Regiment was posted to Ireland to aid in suppression of the rebellion. 19 Drummer Boys were included in the force which was present at the hanging of two rebels in Wicklow. Charles served for twelve years and sixty-one days as a drummer boy and a further five years and eight months as a private before being promoted to Corporal. Charles was a small man – five feet five and one half inches in height – with light brown hair and grey eyes and a fair complexion. In June 1808 the regiment marched to Newcastle-upon-Tyne and in November moved to Sunderland. Here Charles met Ann Walker and they were married in St. Michael and All Angels Church in Bishopwearmouth on 8th May 1809. Lucy Bassett (Charles Sister?) and Elizabeth Walker were witnesses. On the 12th October 1809 the regiment moved again this time to Tynemouth and it was here that their first child, a girl, was born on 17th February 1810. She was christened Harriet Walker Bassett on 25th March 1810 in Christ Church, North Shields. In May 1810 the regiment were on the move again marching across the country to Hull in Yorkshire. After a two year sojourn in the land of green ginger they went to Leeds, finally returning to Kent in 1814. In June of that year the regiment was disbanded. Charles however remained an enlisted man until 1829 when having served 33 years he was discharged on 11th May. His long service record is summed up on his discharge papers in one word “Good”. In addition to Harriet we know the names of four other children of Charles and Ann. Bessette, 66, of 184 Walnut St., Agawam, died in his home Monday night after a long illness. He was born and educated in Agawam. Son of the late Pierre and Rosalie (Jasmin) Bessette, he had been a life-time resident of the town. He was a retired employee of the Springfield Armory, beginning there as a messenger boy 51 years ago. He retired in September, 1955, as chief of the production planning department. He was a member of St. Therese’s Church and of its Holy Name Society, and was retired treasurer of the 20-Year Club of the Springfield Armory. Survivors are his wife, Mrs. Emma (Gauthier) Bessette; one son, Albert J., of Agawam; two sisters, Mrs. Ovelene Dufresne of West Springfield and Mrs. Joseph Elroy of Agawam; one step-brother, Moses Bessette of Agawam; three step-sisters, Mrs. Elise Gosselin of Baltimore, Md., Mrs. Louise Dwyer of Springfield and Sister Mary Edith of the Presentation of Mary Order, Canada. The funeral will be held at R.D. Toomey funeral home Thursday at 9 a.m. with a solemn high mass of requiem in St. Teresa’s Church, Agawam, at 10. Burial will be in St. Thomas Cemetery. Bass, of the firm of Scott Bass & Co., is a son of Thomas and Sarah (Gibson) Bass, and was born in Washington County, Mo., in 1853. He came to Crawford County when about six years of age, and was educated in the common schools. When young he learned to shoe horses and oxen, at which he worked some years. Having clerked in the store a short time he became a member of the firm of Brickey & Bass, in 1879, and has ever since been engaged in the mercantile business, though the style of the firm has changed several times. He is also interested in the Bank of Steelville. In 1875 he married Letha E. Brickey, a native of Steelville, and their four children are: Glendora, Mamie, Harry and Joseph. | 3974 | History of Franklin, Jefferson, Washington, Crawford and Gasconade Counties, Missouri (Part 2) 1888 Thomas Bass is a son of Thomas and Nancy (Compton) Bass, natives of Green County, Ky., where they were married and lived until 1825, engaged in farming; they then moved to Washington County, Mo., where the father followed mining, being very successful until his death in 1840, his widow surviving until 1873. In their family of twelve children Thomas was the seventh son, and was born in Washington County in 1830. He was reared to the occupation of mining, and enjoyed but few educational advantages. In 1850 he married Sarah Gibson, who was born in Franklin County, Mo., in 1829. Having farmed in Washington County until 1860, he moved to Crawford County and settled twelve miles east of Steelville. He has now been a resident of the county twenty-eight years, and his principal occupation has been farming, though at different times he has conducted a hotel at Steelville. He has served in Washington and Crawford Counties as justice of the peace for about twenty years, and has been a member of the Masonic fraternity for thirty-three years. Mr. and Mrs. Bass are members of the Baptist Church, and of their seven children six are living, five sons and one daughter, the sons all being business men of Crawford County. Thomas Bass, Jr., was born in Washington County, January 30, 1859, and is a son of Thomas and Sarah (Gibson) Bass. He was brought to Crawford County when two years of age, where he received his education in the common schools. In 1884 he married Lillian Trask, a native of Crawford County, and a daughter of Marvin W. Trask. Mr. and Mrs. Bass have one son, Frederick C. Jeff was born to parents Robert Bass and Mary Ritch Bass on January 23, 1975, in Nampa, Idaho. He grew up as the oldest son with his sister, Kim, and step-sister, Niki. As a child, Jeff enjoyed spending time traversing the North End Foothills of Boise, climbing trees, building forts, shooting his BB gun, riding bikes, sailing at Lucky Peak Reservoir, sledding, skiing, and playing sports in the front yard with his sister and friends. As he aged, his interests evolved to snowboarding, music, camping, and playing tight end (#80). He attended Boise High School and graduated in 1994. "Brave to the Grave." He also studied at Northern Idaho College, College of Western Idaho, and Boise State University. On July 11, 1998, Jeff married Amy Kardos gaining three more sisters: Olivia, Taylor, and Megan, a mother-in-law, Lisa, and a grandma Betty. Jeff's first son, Cameron Robert Bass, arrived on Veterans Day, November 11, 1998. His second son, Alexander Paul, was born July 2, 2002. Jeff's boys were his pride and joy and shared his love of nature, music, humor, and hard work. Jeff worked at St. Luke's Boise Medical Center in patient and visitor services where he always greeted everyone with a smile and especially loved taking care of friends and family when they came to the hospital?going the extra mile to make sure they were well taken care of. Jeff also worked for Mr. Mudd as a polyurethane foam lifter. It was easy to spot Jeff in his giant van as worked throughout the valley. Jeff will be remembered as a loving father, husband, son, brother, uncle, and friend. A musician, recording and sharing his songs played on his guitar. A prankster: especially to his mom, aunts, and sons. A trendsetter: with his unique selection of hats and novelty tees. An animal lover. An artist: leaving his signature "cat butt" in all our homes, on our whiteboards, scrap paper, and with sidewalk chalk. A tinker: building, fixing, and playing with all sorts of gadgets in his garage, house, and yard, which he usually gave to his sons, nieces, and nephews. Jeff was the kindest and most loving person, putting others before himself daily. He never left a room without hugging you and saying "I love you" or "I'm proud of you." We will miss his jokes, his crooked smile, his laugh, and his great big hugs. He is survived by his two sons, Cameron Robert and Alexander Paul Bass; wife, Amy Bass; parents, Robert Bass and Mary Ritch Bass; sister and her family, Kim, Tony, Karsyn, and Paul Zaragoza; step-sister and her family, Niki Jones; Robert's significant other, Elvia Moreno and her family; sister in laws and their families, Olivia Cook, Taylor Meservy, Megan Seward; mother-in-law, Lisa Meservy. Jeff is also survived by a large extended family of aunts, uncles and cousins in Idaho and California, who he cared for deeply. He is preceded in death by his grandparents, Willis and Adalee Bass of Carmichael, CA; grandparents, Russell and Mary Petrina Ritch of Citrus Heights, CA; and grandma in law, Betty Thompson of Boise, ID. He worked for many years at the former Bassetts Variety Store in Napoleon and was a member of First Presbyterian Church in Napoleon, a 32nd degree Mason and a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II. Surviving are a son, David (Elyse) Bloomfield Hills, Mich.; a brother, Victor, Arlington, Va.; and two grandchildren. Also preceding him in death was a brother Dewey.
