"Bob" Johnson died Tuesday, Dec. 17, 1996, at the Ochoco Care Center in Prineville. He was 83. A private family service will precede private interment at the Juniper Haven Cemetery in Prineville. Visitation will be held today (Dec. 19), 3-7 p.m. in the Prineville Funeral Home. Mr. Johnson was born Feb. 13, 1914, in Chicago, Ill., to Charles H. and Lora (Bassett) Johnson. He grew up and attended schools in Rockford, Ill. He toured with his band, "The Kentucky Vagabonds" around various Midwest states, then joined a couple of larger bands, playing in his home town of Rockford. In 1941 he was drafted into the U.S. Army and served until 1945. He married Lucille (Woodbury) on Sept. 4, 1941, in Junction City, Kan., where he was stationed in the army. In 1945, he began work as a purchasing agent for a wholesale house in Rockford. In 1954 he moved his family to Los Gatos, Calif., where he worked for FMC Corp. as a purchasing agent until he retired in 1977 and moved to Prineville. He enjoyed playing drums, playing cribbage and watching basketball. He was a past member of the Prineville Elks. Survivors include his wife in Prineville; daughter Gayle Halvorson of Prineville; three grandchildren in Prineville; numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother and one sister. Memorials can be made to Pioneer Memorial Home Health and Hospice. Rockford Morning Star, October 14, 1941 Rockford Man Is Transferred To Fort Myers, Va. Robert C. Johnson, who left Rockford June 27 for Fort Riley Kas., has been transferred to Fort Myers, Va., according to word received yesterday by his wife and his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Charles H. Johnson, 207 South 1st street. Johnson is a member of the 3rd cavalry band at Fort Myers, located across the Potomac river from Washington, D.C. He also is a member of a 13-piece dance band at Fort Myers. Johnson was a drummer with Ralph Williams' orchestra here before he joined the army. | 4078 | 10th Vermont Infantry Obituaries Death of Edward Vincelette Edward Vincelette died at 3 o'clock Sunday morning after an illness of seven weeks of heart disease. Mr. Vincelette's illness began with a partial stroke of paralysis from which he rallied and seemed to be improving until a change for the worst set in Saturday. In the death of Mr. Vincelette Swanton loses one of that type of substantial citizens who are a credit to a town. Edward Vincelette was born in Swanton 64 years ago and all of his life has been spent in town except for a few years when he was in business in Canada. During all that time he has had but one employer, the Barney Marble Company. In 1868 Mr. Vincelette married Miss Lucy Trudeau of St. Sebastien, PQ, who with two daughters and eight sons survive him. Mr. Vincelette was one of the leading members of Jesse A. Jewett Post, GAR Before enlisting in the 10th Mr. Vincelette enlisted in the 6th Regiment at the outbreak of the war. He was discharged from the 6th for disability, came home and at once enlisted in the 10th. In politics Mr. Vincelette was a staunch Republican and always took a lively interest in municipal affairs. He had served as justice of the peace for several years. The funeral was held from the Church of the Nativity Tuesday morning at 10 o'clock. High mass was celebrated by Rev. Father Salmon with Father Foulliet acting as deacon and Father Alliot as sub-deacon. After the mass Father Salmon delivered a brief and fitting eulogy of the deceased. "Punky" Bassett, 81, of Earl Avenue, died Sunday morning (4-29-12) at home after a 10-year struggle with serious health issues.He was born in Greenfield on April 2, 1931, the son of Clarence W. and Alberta (Northway) Bassett. He attended Greenfield schools and graduated from Greenfield High School in 1949.Enlisting in the U.S. Army in July of 1950, he served during the Korean Conflict as a paratrooper. Injured in a jump on the coast of Japan, he spent one year in recovery and was sent back to duty as a company clerk. He served in Korea, the Panama Canal Zone and Fort Drum, N.Y. During his service time he married his wife of 60 years, Barbara Griswold of Northfield on Nov. 12, 1951 at the parsonage of the Trinitarian Congregational Church in Northfield by the Rev. Joseph Reeves and was sealed in the Washington Temple of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints on Oct. 8, 1993. They spent their whole married life in Greenfield, more than 50 years on Earl Avenue. He was employed by the USPS as a carrier, retiring in 1987, after which he held several part-time jobs with Reil Services and his church, where he also served in many other capacities.He had many friends and interests including carpentry which he learned from his Dad and Grampa, gardening, hunting and fishing, helping others and fun times with family and friends. He also kept the Tropical Pet Store in business.He is survived by his wife Barbara of 60 years and five sons: Jon and his wife Eva (Brown) of Bernardston, Andrew and his wife Lauri (Atkins) of Greenfield, James and his wife Cheryl (Sedlak) of Greenfield, Daniel and his companion Barbara Elliott of Shelburne and Jesse and his wife Jennifer (Graves) of Greenfield; three daughters, Annmarie Mason and her husband Sean of Bernardston, Jennifer Willor and her husband Brian of Greenfield and Catherine Campbell and her husband Kenneth of Franklin; 23 grandchildren ranging from 33 years to 9 months, and four great-grandchildren.He was predeceased by siblings, Clarence Jr., Beverly Duprey, Bonnie Friel and Sandra Facey.Funeral services will be Thursday (5-3-12) at 11 a.m. at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 92 Colrain Road, Greenfield.
