Our subject was married December 4, 1860, to Celinda Winchell, born February 19, 1838, in Randolph, daughter of David and Eunice Winchell, natives of Connecticut, who came to this county in a very early day and remained until their death. To Mr. and Mrs. Bassett have been born three children, one of whom is now living - Emmett, born May 22, 1877. The deceased are Wilbur, born in 1863, drowned June 16, 1870, and Rosie, born December 22, 1872, died September 4, 1873. Mr. and Mrs. Bassett are members of the Methodist Episcopal Church. | 4342 | 1830 Federal Census of Carlisle, Schoharie County, New York Nathan Basset 010010000-200001 1m5-10,1m20-30,2fU5,1f30-40 History of Schoharie County by William E. Roscoe Carlisle Center Nathan Bassett originated this little hamlet, and lived here many years. During the counterfeiting days of 1830 to 1840 of paper currency as mentioned in Chapter IV, of this work, the law was very harsh with those who passed the "spurious" and many poor men, that received it for wages, were arrested on passing it for the necessaries of life, as the guilty were able to swear to anything that would save themselves and send others to prison. Bassett was a poor but hard working man, and happened to be the possessor of a two dollar bill which he passed and was sent to States prison for the offense, much against the desire of the majority of the people, as they believed he w innocent of intended criminality. But a certain few, whose pockets were at all times full of "bad", swore poor Nathan to the grates. During his imprisonment, the news of William C. Bouck's election to the Gubernatorial chair, was made to him, upon which he quit work and gave three cheers for Bouck. The rules of the prison forbid such a demonstration and Bassett received a few lashes as a reminder of prison discipline, but "I can't help it," said Bassett and gave three more. Upon Bouck's entry into office a petition was placed before him, with hundreds of names attached, for his release, which was granted and Bassett became a citizen again, and was known to the day of his death as a "thoroughbred, hardshell Democrat." | Bassett, Nathan (I03317)
