Jerry Dawson Bass

DUNN ? Jerry Dawson Bass, 82, passed away peacefully at home surrounded by his family in the early morning of Thursday, March 16, 2023.

Jerry was born in Harnett County on Dec. 26, 1940. He was the son of Felton and Alma D. Bass and he had one brother, Sherrill Bass. He graduated from Dunn High School in 1959 and attended Campbell University. He owned and operated an upholstery and trim shop along with his brother, Sherrill Bass, for over 40 years. There are many people in the surrounding area that had their car seats and furniture repaired, reupholstered or worked on by Jerry and Sherrill.

Jerry was a hard worker and active all his life in the community. You could find him working late hours to get a project done or helping with the church, a family or neighbor. He was always full of stories, and they were all true because he lived it or experienced it. He always had some jokes and would put a smile on your face. He was a humble man and a man of his word. If he told you it was true, it was, and if he promised something to be done, it got done at the price he quoted you.

He enjoyed sports and met the love of his life, Elaine Bass, playing softball. He played up into his 40s. He coached his son, Jeremy, and many local boys in baseball over the years and was always there supporting his teams and going to the games. That did not stop with his granddaughters as he attended all their basketball and softball games, as long as his health would allow. He also supported his wife, Elaine, and her sisters in their music ministry for many years traveling to area churches and events and was a vital member of the sound and stage crew.

He was a charter member of North Clinton Avenue Baptist Church in Dunn, where he attended and served in his early days. When he married Elaine in 1970, he attended Grove Presbyterian Church in Dunn where he was very active and served as a deacon. Later in life, Jerry and Elaine became members of Mt. Carmel Pentecostal Free Will Baptisst Church, where he is a member and served as a deacon. He never lost contact with all three churches, and he treated them all as family and they felt the same way about him.

Jerry was preceded in death by his wife of 41 years, Elaine Allen Bass; his parents, Felton and Alma Dawson Bass; and his brother, Sherrill Felton Bass. He is survived by his son, Jeremy Stewart Bass and wife Melissa; and granddaughters, Kristen and Aubree Bass, all of Dunn.

A visitation service will be held Saturday, March 18, 2023, from 3 to 5 p.m. at Skinner & Smith Funeral Home in Dunn. The service will be held at 2 p.m. on Sunday, March 19, 2023, at Mt. Carmel PFWB Church in Dunn with burial to follow at the Grove Presbyterian Church Cemetery in Dunn.

Murray T. Bass

'A message from Murray Bass to all his friends and loved ones.'
Murray T. Bass was born in San Gabriel Canyon, California, on May 10, 1928.
Married 60 years to a beautiful redhead, Zella Edora Bass. Lucky man.

Mine was a genuine ashes-to-ashes life. Started as nothing with nothing and took nothing with me when I died. I had a good life. Not an easy one, but good.

God guided my footsteps as I grew older. He made my life worthy and worth living with the help of wonderful friends. I have laughed and cried with the people I loved and who loved me. I became a better human because of my critics. They taught me when I was wrong, and reaffirmed my convictions when I was right. They helped me find the path to wisdom, a destination I was never quite able to reach.

I have entered into the eternal vacuum of anonymity. While I will certainly be soon forgotten, I pray that some of the things I tried to achieve in my lifetime will continue to live through the lives I had a small part in changing.

To everyone I leave behind I have these parting words, the lyrics of a song: "When you're all alone and blue, No one to tell your troubles to, Remember me, I'm the one who loves you."
Service will be private.

Mrs. Helen Bass

Mrs. Helen Culp Bass, sixth grade teacher at Wyandotte, is the wife of a United Gas boat captain, and a native of Eldorado, Ark.
She has two sons, Thomas Neal Bass, who is attending a seminary in Austin, Tex., to become a Presbyterian minister, and Robert Oren Bass, who is a petroleum engineer at Olney, Ill., for Pure Oil. She also had a grandson, Kenny, son of Robert.
A teacher in Morgan City for six years, she has been at Wyandotte for four of them.
Mrs. Bass said she was ?supposed? to be a bookkeeper, not a teacher. A graduate of Eldorado High school and Eldorado Junior College, she is having to do summer work at Nicholls to get al of her Louisiana requirements in order.
She did substitute teaching during World War II in Monroe when the school principal there asked her just to help out. Then she lived in Houma and was a credit manager for a packing company, and, here at Morgan City, when her husband was transferred to this area, she worked in Paul Schreier?s insurance office.
?But I?ve returned to teaching on a full time basis and I?m convinced it?s my avocation, at least,? the dark-haired, cheerful woman said, recently.
She also teaches a Sunday school class at her church and is active in all phases of church work. She is a member of a bridge club and the PTA.
At Wyandotte she said she teaches all subjects, from the multiplication tables to kicking a football.
More specifically a math teacher, Mrs. Bass teaches a little of everything, actually, with spelling, language, reading, geography, history, art and music filling out the list.
?If I had the opportunity to make any change in the present system of education, I would stress more academic work and fewer non-academic activities during school hours. I think students would enjoy them more if they were conducted outside of scheduled class time, too,? she said.
Teaching is rewarding in that you find you offer something, you actually accomplish something, Mrs. Bass said. You do work that is never forgotten and you work with children who never forget you.
The bookkeeper?s set of figures may be easier to control, said Mrs. Bass, but the teacher?s reward of bright, scrubbed faces alert to new ideas and knowledge is a runaway first with this friendly bookkeeper-turned-teacher.

Sudden Death of an Aged Lady

Mrs. Maultsey Bass, wife of Mr. Lewis G. Bass, died at the residence of her husband, near Magnolia, Duplin county, on Monday morning, the 28th ult. She arose in the morning at the usual hour and ate a hearty breakfast, in seemingly excellent health and spirits. After breakfast she went into her sitting-room where she conversed with her husband and a visitor for some time, with no appearance of ill-health. Mr. Bass and the visitor after awhile went out, and in a short time Mrs. Putnam, Mrs. Bass? widowed daughter, went into the room and found her frothing at the mouth and apparently in a dying condition. She was placed upon a bed and a physician sent for, who was soon in attendance and administered such remedies as the occasion demanded; but with no beneficial results. She died before noon the same day. She was 70 years of age and had been a consistent member of the Baptist Church for about 40 years.
