Floyd Francis Bassett, Jr. passed away at home on Jan. 5, 2020. Floyd was born in Asbury Park, N.J. on July 24, 1933 to the late Floyd, Sr. and Antoinette Bassett. At the age of 4, his family moved and he was raised in Ocean City, MD on 42nd St. above the Party Market. As the student living furthest to the north, the one and only city school bus picked him up and then turned around and headed south. He graduated from the original Ocean City High School, later converted to City Hall.

After graduation, Floyd served as a Corporal in the U.S. Army in the Korean War for 3 years. Upon leaving the Army, he enrolled at Salisbury State Teachers College where he earned a B.S. and a Masters Equivalent in Education. It was at Salisbury State Teachers College that he met the love of his life, Louise ("Buttons") Bassett, to whom he was married for 60 years. He retired as a Guidance Counselor after 27 years teaching in Worcester County Schools.

For many years, Floyd was the Charter Boat Captain of The Teacher's Pet. He loved to share his knowledge with anyone who wanted to learn. Floyd enjoyed duck hunting until he was 80 years old and continued fishing through this fall. He was a member of the American Legion and the VFW. He was a Worcester County Commissioner from 1991-1995. He had a Real Estate Broker's License and taught some real estate classes. He and Buttons traveled the world with a close group of friends.

Floyd was preceded in death by his parents; and brother Ronnie Bassett. He is survived by his wife; two sons Jeff Bassett (Rehoboth, DE), and David Bassett and wife Kathy (Snow Hill, MD); and grandchildren, Colleen, Kelsey and Kevin Bassett; a brother, Michael Bassett and wife Lynda (Falls Church, VA) and several nieces and nephews.

Floyd acquired many, many friends over the years who no doubt will remember his great sense of humor as well as his "Live and let live" attitude. Others will also remember his crazy driving. One of his favorite sayings was "Life is good!". He lived his life to the fullest and will be sorely missed by all who knew and loved him, especially his grandchildren.

If you would like to honor Floyd's memory, please consider a donation to Coastal Hospice, "Stansell House at the Ocean", P.O. Box 1733, Salisbury, MD 21802-1733. A private memorial service will be held at a later date.

One of four children of Walter E. and Florence Hearthway, she was born June 4, 1909, in Snow Hill. Her late siblings were brothers Lester and Edward Hearthway, both of Snow Hill; and a sister, Nellie Gibbons of Snow Hill.

Mrs. Quillin worked for 38 years at Hess Apparel, primarily on West Main Street in Salisbury and at Ninth Street and the Boardwalk in Ocean City. She retired at age 81, concluding her Hess career at the company's Montego Bay store in 1991. Lewis Hess, the late founder of the small dress-store chain, and his late son, John, often spoke of Mrs. Quillin as "our most loyal employee."
Often when asked the secret to her longevity, Mrs. Quillin credited the immense love she received from her family and many devoted church friends.

A life member of First Presbyterian Church in Ocean City, Mrs. Quillin was the congregation's oldest member. She volunteered at the church for more than 80 years, working at Grace Parker Breakfasts, helping at numerous rummage store sales and fundraisers and serving as a church deaconess and secretary. For decades, her task was to hand church bulletins to everyone who attended.
She was a life member of the Ocean City Fire Company Ladies Auxiliary and Worcester County Chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star.
A celebration of her life will be held today at noon at First Presbyterian Church in Ocean City. Pastor Alex Ayres will officiate. A private interment will be this morning in Buckingham Presbyterian Church Cemetery in Berlin. Arrangements are being handled by Burbage Funeral Home in Berlin.

He attended Newnan High School where an introductory course in simple drafting would launch him into a career that would cover 20 years at The Bonnell Company; later a ten-year stint at Baughman Detailing and ten more years in his own company, Bass Detailing. His natural propensity for great attention to every facet of his work made him a valued employee and, in the last ten years of his career he would own his own firm. Joe's marriage to Brenda Thurman was one of two great highlights in his life. The other would be the birth of their son, Derek. The family tree grew with the addition of Derek's wife Debbie and their children, Brandi Hartley, Josh Perez and McKenzie Bass. The family was complete with the great-grandchildren James and Audi. Life changed dramatically for Joe following the unexpected death of his dear Brenda. As his health issues came to the forefront in Joe's life, he was able to accept the fact that his hold on life was tenuous, at best, and he began to formulate a plan for an orderly exit from his life on earth, even arranging for hospice care for himself. Joe's life will be remembered, and memories shared at McKoon Funeral Home at 38 Jackson Street in Newnan on Tuesday, May 7th in a service in the funeral home chapel at 2:00 p.m. The family will receive friends beginning at 12:30 p.m. Interment will be in Historic Oak Hill Cemetery. Those who wish to honor Joe's life, may do so by a gift in his memory to Unity Baptist Church, 311 Smokey Road, Newnan, Georgia 30263. Online condolences may be expressed at www.mckoon.com. Karen (Bassett) Olson

Sadly, Karen (Bassett) Olson passed away on May 31, 2017, following a brave battle with ovarian cancer. She was born June 30, 1947, in Elma, Wash., to Leighton and Ann (Coughran) Bassett, the only girl with four Bassett brothers.

She thoroughly enjoyed the friendships that she developed with her vendors over the years.

Karen organized both the Bassett Memorial Softball and Golf Tournaments to raise money to award Elma High School graduates with scholarships each year. She loved her Cooking with the Kathies sessions, monthly Bunko games, Sunday dinners, family birthday dinners, annual Seabrook trips, and hosting all holiday family gatherings. Dr. and Mrs. Bassett would have celebrated their thirty-second wedding anniversary on Dececember 29. She had been in ill-health for several years but relatives believed her condition was growing better. Friend Fills Pulpit.
When news reached Cliff Temple Church at Tenth and Beckley that Mrs. Bassett had died a hush passed over the audience which was gathering for the evening worship. A short prayer service was conducted and then Dr. C.S. McKinney, pastor of the San Benito Baptist Church, went to the pulpit to fill the place of his friend, Dr. Bassett, whom he had known for many years.
Dr. McKinney is in Dallas attending a church conference. Dr. Bassett called him soon after Mrs. Bassett’s death and asked that he deliver the sermon for the evening. Mrs. Bassett’s daughters are expected to reach Dallas Monday, when arrangements will be completed. Only a few months ago Dr. and Mrs. Bassett returned from New York City, where they visited their three daughters, all then living in that city. Since the visit Mrs. Tomlinson has moved to Atlanta.

D.C. Giddings, Capitalist and Banker, Dead
Succumbs at Home in Brenham Sunday Morning
Special to the News
Brenham, Texas, November 27 - D.C. Giddings, banker, capitalist, planter, member of one of the most distinguished old families of Texas, died at his home in Brenham Sunday morning at 11 o’clock, aged 64 years. For the last nine weeks he had suffered intensely from injuries received in an automobile accident, and in the last few days complications developed which resulted in his death.
Mr. Giddings was born in Brenham January 27, 1863, on the same spot where the handsome Giddings home now stands. He was a son of the late Colonel D.C. Giddings and Malinda C. Lusk Giddings; was educated at the Brenham public schools, the Agricultural and Mechanical College of Texas, of which he was one of the first students, and the University of Virginia.
In 1881, when 18 years of age, he became associated with his father and uncle in the banking house of Giddings & Giddings, the oldest bank in this section of Texas, and at the time of his death was still the active head of the bank established in 1866 by J.D. and D.C. Giddings.
In 1884 he was married to Miss Carrie Bassett, daughter of the late William H. Bassett, who survives him, together with three children, Mrs. E.P. Anderson and D.C. Giddings Jr. of Brenham and Mrs. John D. Rogers of Navasota.
Mr. Giddings was prominent in State political circles and wielded great influence in the Democratic party, though he steadily declined to run for any high political office. He was president of the Brenham Compress Company, president of the South Texas Cotton Mills and chairman of the executive committee of Brazos River Conservation and Reclamation Association, having extension farming interests in the Brazos bottoms of Washington and Waller Counties.
Aided in Progress.
He was charter member and the first exalted ruler of the Elks Lodge of Brenham. A leader in financial, civic, agricultural and educational enterprises, Mr. Giddings was at the head of many movements for the development and progress of Brenham and Washington County. Recently he had been deeply interested in the project to raise Blinn Memorial College to junior college rank, and while a patient in the Brenham Hospital after the accident that resulted in his death, he sent his check for a large amount and urged others to immediately make their donations to help the school. Every worthy public enterprise had his generous support, and he gave largely to charity.
Private funeral services will be held from the family residence at 4 o’clock Monday afternoon, with the Reverend S. Moylan Bird of Marshall, former rector of St. Peter’s Episcopal Church of Brenham, officiating. Interment will be made at Prairie Lea Cemetery near his father and mother.
