Thomas Bassett Tomorrow afternoon at 2 o?clock the remains of the late Thomas Bassett will be laid at rest in the Erie cemetery. Deceased came to this city from Ireland in 1850, where he was born in 1815. He and his affianced came to this country on the same vessel and were married in New York. They came to Erie shortly after their marriage and went to housekeeping on West Eighth street for a year, when they moved to West Eleventh street and had lived in the same locality ever since. Mr. Bassett went to work for the firm of Lester, Sennett & Chester, and continued with that enterprise through the changes from Sennett, Barr & Co, to Barr & Johnson, then Johnson, Black & Co., and finally Black & Germer, for a period of forty years, and had charge of the iron pattern fitting department. Mr. Bassett commenced study for the ministry in the Dublin University when quite a young man, but was obliged to quit study on account of ill health. When he came to Erie he became a member of St. Paul?s Episcopal church under the rectorship of Rev. Mr. Ambercrombie and had continued a communicant of that church till his death. He leaves there sons ? J.J. Bassett, with the Skinner engine company; William R. Bassett, weighmaster at the P. & E. yards, and Alfred Bassett, on the Chicago board of trade ? and a daughter, Miss Lizzie Bassett, of the high school faculty. He also leaves his faithful wife, with whom he had lived so long, happily and prosperously. Mr. Bassett had but one brother in this country and that was John Bassett, a soldier in the late war and over whose remains the nephew, J.J. Bassett, read the Episcopal burial service in the Kane Cemetery a few years ago. The mother of Mr. Richard Gaggin was a sister of the deceased. Deceased was a man of very staunch integrity and he enjoyed the confidence of his neighbors and acquaintances to an unusual degree. The illness which resulted in his death came upon him about seven weeks ago and terminated rather suddenly. His widow and children have the sympathies of every man in the shops of which he was so long an employe, as well as of thousands of others. The Rev. John Huske, of St. Paul?s, will officiate at the funeral services at the late residence. The interment will be private. 1860 Federal Census of Erie, Erie County, Pennsylvania (19 Jul 1860) Thom. | 45937 | The Evening Mail, Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada, Monday, 25 February 1924 The Late Jas. J. Bassett The funeral of James Joseph Bassett took place on Thursday morning from 171 Brunswick street, with full miliary honors to St. Mary?s cathedral, where Requiem High Mass was celebrated. Interment was in Mount Olivet cemetery. The late Mr. Bassett who was at the time of his death only in the twenty-third year of his age, saw active service at the front, and while there was gassed, leaving him with heart failure, which was the cause of his death. ?Joe?, as he was known to his many friends, went to his work at Wentzells Limited on Monday morning, but after dinner while making preparations for his afternoon?s work, he suddenly became unconscious and died before medical aid could be summoned. The heartfelt sympathy of many friends goes out to Mrs. Bassett in her bereavement. She was formerly Miss Mary Diffey, of this city, and a sorrowing fact is that they had only been married five months. Scarcely fifteen minutes had elapsed since he left his home until she received word of his death. The rest of the estate, valued at ?more than $10,000? in real estate and about $5,000 in personal property, is left to Mrs. Hannah V.C. Bassett, wife of Dr. Bassett. Left an orphan at the age of twelve, he was cared for by his uncle, Dr. Wing of Boston, and received his medical education at the Berkshire Medical School, now a part of Harvard University. A brilliant student, he was prepared to take his final degree before reaching the required age. He began his practice in Paterson, N.J., and was one of the first physicians to practice the then new school of homeopathy. This was more remarkable since his uncle, Dr. Wing, was a distinguished follower of the allopathic school. Dr. Bassett remained in Peterson until the early '50s, when he removed to New York City, where he became recognized as one of the leaders in his professio numbering among his patients many of New York's most distinguished families, such as the Chandlers, the Rindelanders and the Astors. Although for a long time connected with the Flower Hospital Medical School, he refused to accept the professorship, but consented to act as censor and examine each graduating class as to individual fitness. Dr. Bassett gained a wide reputati diagnostician and was consulted by the most eminent physicians of his time in especially difficult or puzzling cases. He was married April 14, 186 Hannah Valeria, daughter of Acton Civille, of New York, and had four children: Acton Civille, Laura Wing, Adaline Hallet, wife of Philip Cook, of San Antonio, Tex., and Josephine Atterbury, wife of William H.
