| 46102 | The Franklin Democrat, Friday, May 6, 1881, Volume 2, Number 44, page 4 A Pioneer Gone. Arthur Bass, the subject of this sketch, was born December 8th, 1792, in Randolph County, North Carolina, and emigrated to this state in the year 1826. He lived in Hensley township from that time to the day of his death, which sad event took place on the 18th day of April, 1881. As will be readily seen, he was one of the first settlers of this county, and was well acquainted with the hardships and privation incident to the life of a pioneer. He was a man of untiring energy and devoted himself to the conduct of a large farm which he himself had cleared and from which he derived a comfortable support for himself and family. In religion, he was a Baptist; in politics, a democrat; and in every relation that he sustained to others, an honest man. Such was his life that all respected him, and would fain regret his death except for that better life that now is his. The funeral took place at the Baptist Church which is built on ground donated by him to the church. The service was delivered by Elder E. D. Herod, to a large and attentive audience, from I Peter, I., 24 after which the remains were interred in the Bethlehem cemetery. 1820 Federal Census of Washington County, Indiana Arthur Bass 000020-20100 2m26-45,2fU10,1f16-26 1830 Federal Census of Hensley, Johnson County, Indiana Arthur Bass 120001-1110001 1mU5,2m5-10,1f30-40,1fU5,1f5-10,1f10-15,1f30-40 1840 Federal Census of Johnson County, Indiana Arthur Bass 0001101-0011001 1m15-20,1m20-30,1m40-50,1f10-15,1f15-20,1f40-50 1850 Federal Census of Hensley Township, Johnson County, IN (16 Nov 1850) Arthur Bass 60 M North Carolina Farmer 2000 Milley 64 F North Carolina Paulina Dyre 14 F Indiana Joseph Dyre 12 M Indiana 1860 Federal Census of Hensley Township, Johnson County, IN (5 Jun 1860) Arthur Bass 63 M North Carolina Farmer 5000 1000 Rhoda 34 F Ohio Adison R. 10/12 M Indiana James H. 18 M Indiana Farm Laborer | Bass, Arthur (I32313)

| 46126 | The Free Lance Star, Fredericksburg, Virginia, Monday, January 31, 1977 Family spends record cold winter in shelter of plastic, tree branches Wahkon, Minn. (AP) – David and Lois Bassett and their three children are snug and warm, even though several layers of plastic sheeting are all that separate them from temperatures as cold as 48 below zero. The Bassett family is spending one of the coldest Minnesota winters on record in a shelter made of tree branches covered with polyethylene sheets. Bassett, 25, said the winter weather scared the family a little, but they wanted to get onto their own load so he built the shelter near Mille Lacs Lake in central Minnesota in November. It took two days to build the shelter and install a metal heati stove so Mrs. Bassett, 23, and the children – April, 5; Nathan, 1 ½, and Benjamin, 3 months – could move in. The house was built by bending over tree branches to form the outline and support for it. The house has a wood back and front and see-through plastic sides. No windows were needed, but there is a vent at the top for a stovepipe and a little air for ventilation does get in because the plastic is not sealed tightly. The wood used to warm the shelter and for cooking is scrap left by a logging company which formerly owned the land. During the day, the sun helps warm the shelter, and Bassett said one log will keep the home warm. At night it takes a little more. “I have seen frost on the door hinges,” he said. The Bassett’s home is an extension of an idea that more and more owners of conventional homes have been using to seal drafty windows in the wintertime. The Federal Energy Administration, in fact, says covering windows with plastic creates cheap and effective storm windows. The plastic is usually installed inside the house, rather than on the outside. Visitors who step through the wooden door of the Bassett’s plastic shelter know they’ve stepped into a home, however unconventional. There are wood floors that are washed weekly, a cook stove, a table and chairs, a bed for Bassett and his wife, a pull-down bunk for the two older children and a basket for the baby. The house has two big rooms, but only one is being used right now. The Bassetts also have an A-frame outhouse and a wel A big metal washtub keeps clothing and the Bassetts clea “I can wash two loads of clothes and rinse them with 20 gallons of water,” Lois Bassett said. The kids take baths in the tub, but David and Lois hook up a coffeepot full of warm water and stand in the tub to take a shower. “The kids have fun in the tub, but it’s kind of squishy for us,” Mrs. Bassett said. The family used three oil lamps for light during winter evenings. The Bassetts get a newspaper on weekends and have a battery-powered radio to get news and music in the shelter, which they plan to replace with a hand-built cabin in the spring. Response from neighbors also has contributed to the feeling of warmth in the Bassett home. “The neighbors have welcomed us really warm,” Bassett said. “Everyone on the road (five families) has visited us.” Mille Lacs Messenger, Friday November 6, 2009 Wahkon men indicted in federal court Nathan Bassett, and Tytus Bassett, 31, who were charged in September wi violating state drug laws, have now been indicted on three counts in federal court for allegedly growing 428 marijuana plants on land owned by Aitkin County. According to a news release from the U.S. Attorney’s Office, District of Minnesota, a grand jury indicted the two brothers on one count of conspiracy to manufacture and possess with intent to distribute marijuana, one count of possession with intent to distribute marijuana, and one count of maintenance of drug-involved premises. The indictment alleges that the brothers knowingly and intentionally maintained a marijuana grow operation between the spring and fall of 2009. If convicted, the defendants face up to 40 years in prison on the conspiracy and possession counts and 20 years on the maintenance count. For more information, check back to this page or see the Nov. 11 Messenger. Mille Lacs Messenger, Wednesday, April 14, 2010 Bassett brothers plead guilty Nathan and Tytus Bassett pleaded guilty in federal court in Minneapolis on Monday, April 12, to possession with intent to distribute 100 or more marijuana plants. The Wahkon brothers earlier pleaded not guilty to three federal charges after investigators found them tending over 400 marijuana plants in Aitkin County last fall. They also pleaded not guilty to conspiracy to manufacture and possess with intent to distribute marijuana and maintenance of drug involved premises. Their not guilty pleas on those counts still stand. For more on this story, see the April 21 Messenger. And what does the LORD require of you? To act justly and love mercy and to walk humbly with your God." Micah 6:8 Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, Wisconsin Thursday, May 30, 2013 Farmer Basse had sweet corn secret Alvin Basse was born to a life of milking cows, and growing sweet corn and apples and pumpkins. And he wouldn't have had it any other way."He loved the earth and he loved to grow things. It was God making things beautiful," his wife, Carolyn, said of Basse, whose life in farming included serving as chairman and president of the Golden Guernsey cooperative co-founded by his parents. Basse died Friday at Waukesha Memorial Hospital of a perforated intestine. He was 80. Alvin Basse was a third generation farmer whose parents originally farmed in Greendale. They sold that land to the federal government for construction of the historic "Greendale originals" during a New Deal project. The family bought 160 acres in Muskego in 1936.Basse had always worked on the farm. At age 7, he had just one wish - a milking stool - and he got it for that Christmas in 1940. That milking stool was used for decades and remains in the family, his son Daniel said. His son also remembered a dedicated friend who helped a high school classmate who had polio. Alvin Basse was prom king and president of his class at Waukesha High School, but he was also the guy who picked up and carried his friend, Tom Uthovien, between classes. "And when I say he carried him around, that's exactly what he did," his son said. "He would race to Tom's class, pick him up off his chair, dash up the stairs with him in his arms and still make it to his own class later," his son said. They remained lifelong friends. Basse served in the Army and got married in 1956 while on furlough after training and before heading to Germany, where he served for 21 months. He had met Carolyn King at a March of Dimes dance at "a little dance hall" at Tess Corners through her cousin, who was involved with the Yorkshire Association of Wisconsin, founded by Alvin Basse. Her cousin raised the Yorkshire breed of swine. The couple met in March, but he didn't get around to calling her until October for a date."He said he had to get the harvesting done first before he could think of anything else," she said.Carolyn understood. She had grown up on a farm five miles down the road from the Basse place."I was looking for a farmer because I knew I liked that type of life," she said. They married after Alvin finished his stint in Germany. In 1957, after returning from the service, he went into partnership with his father, William Basse, on the family's Guernsey Grove Farm.In 1964, they took over the farm after his father died. They were known for three things, according to son: sweet corn, apples and Guernsey cows. His son noted that his father often said "there is no better place to raise a family than the farm - to teach all the values of hard work, discipline, teamwork and the gentleness of God's hands."The Basse family market had begun as a stand under a maple tree in front of their place on Janesville Road and was in business since the 1940s.It grew into Basse's Country Delight Farm Market, S70-W16050 Janesville Road, with hay rides, an annual Pumpkin Fest in October and a reputation for some of the sweetest sweet corn around. After selling their dairy cows, they expanded the market. The Basses continued with the market even after they moved from the farm and found a couple, Tom and Kim Schaefer, to run things about seven years ago."He taught some secrets to growing some really good sweet corn. And the key word there is secrets," Tom Schaefer said. "There's some very key things to growing some consistently super-tasting corn that most people don't know about, and he taught me that."And as far as what those secrets are, I can't say."Basse served as chairman of the Golden Guernsey cooperative and later became president, serving for about 15 years. He left the post in 1992 after the couple sold their Guernseys.Basse also served for about 20 years on the Muskego Planning Commission. He showed the Guernseys he loved at the State Fair and World Dairy Expo, served as a director of the American Guernsey Cattle Club and National Milk Producers Federation, and held offices with the Master Farmers of Wisconsin. He was a 4-H leader for 35 years.Looking back on more than 55 years of farming and marriage, Carolyn can remember only one argument, when she told him she was going home to live with her mother."I don't even know what we were arguing about anymore," she said."We could always work side by side, do field work, milk cows, make hay. Whatever needed to be done."Besides his wife and son, he is survived by another son, Roger; daughters Gloria Basse and Linda Wenck; eight grandchildren; and a sister, Ruth Klussendorf. Alvin C. Bassee visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Max A. Sass & Sons Funeral Home, W173-S7629 Westwood Drive, Muskego. He was 73. A fourth-generation physician and native of Gadsden, he attended Auburn and Tulane Universities, and earned his Doctor of Medicine Degree from Tulane University. He completed his internship and residency in Internal medicine at the University of Alabama in Birmingham, where he served as Chief Medical Resident and Fellow in Pulmonary Medicine.
