Houston A.P. Bassett (1857-1920)
Houston A.P. Bassett, a black man who represented Grimes County in the Texas House of Representatives during the Twentieth Legislature, was born on March 14, 1857, in Grimes County, the son of poor farmers. He did not attend school until he was ten years old but was able to enroll in Straight University in New Orleans, Louisiana, in 1875. From 1879 to 1882 he attended Fish University in Nashville, Tennessee. He returned to Grimes County, where he became active in Republican party politics. In 1886 he won election to the House. J.P.S. Thompson, his opponent, alleged that ineligible voters had aided Bassett's victory, but the House Committee on Privileges and Elections ruled in Bassett's favor because Thompson lacked sufficient proof.
Bassett resided in Anderson during his single term in the legislature. He sat on the Educational Affairs, Stock and Stock Raising, and Military Affairs committees. He also served as chairman of a special committee that investigated the state insane asylum, introduced legislation to permit the chartering of cooperative associations, and attempted to secure a state constitutional amendment that would temporarily exempt capital investments in manufacturing from taxation. Bassett also tried to increase the amount of money that the state received from the leave of convicted felons. He married Cordelia Foster on September 9, 1886, and the couple had four children. Bassett was an active member of a Baptist Church. He died on July 17, 1920, in Grimes County

Gene Richie Bassett
February 17, 1941 ? May 19, 2018

It is with our deepest respect that we announce the passing of our beloved mentor, our most valuable asset "Captain" Gene Richie Bassett.

Gene was called to reunite with his loved ones in heaven Saturday, May 19, 2018. He is now in the arms of his dearly beloved wife Donna Jean Bassett. The Bassett's had been married since May 28, 1981. Gene and Donna shared 34 beautiful years of matrimony. They were a great example of a real husband and wife that stood by each other's side on good days and stood even closer on bad days no matter what.

At the time of his passing Mr. Bassett was surrounded at home by those who loved and cared for him, his dear children and grandchildren. He is survived by his children; Tina Jimenez, Kim Riso, Tracy Phelps, Shawn Phelps, Lori Bassett and Stacy & Bernard Hicks all of Hanford. He has several grand and great-grandchildren.

He entered the world February 17, 1941 born to Donald and Winona Bassett of Armona, CA. He is greeted in paradise by his parents Donald and Winona and brothers whom have went before him. Included in this heavenly reunion are his daughter Gina and his dearest wife Donna Jean.

Mr. Bassett was a great man who enjoyed being and working outdoors. Gene felt very proud to serve and provide for the community where he lived his entire life.

Gene graduated from Hanford High School in 1959. Gene attended Bakersfield College. In the late summer of 1966 he decided to join the Kings County Fire Department. He achieved many lifetime friendships and gained many experiences. These moments in action were fulfilled with other brave likeminded individuals whom would become more like his brothers over time.

In 1977 he achieved a new title with the department, Fire Captain. During his 31 years of service, hard work and perseverance, protecting his community as a member of the Kings Fire Department was the most awarding and prideful accomplishment in the many decades of adventures and experiences Mr. Bassett encountered.

Gene contributed to our community future more as Produce Farmer. He spent many seasons growing corn and other fresh vegetables which were sold at Hanford Farmer's Markets in the 90's. Alongside his brother Bob, the two managed their family farm just outside of Grangeville and 14th Avenues.

Gene also had a home garden. Growing delish and healthy vegetables provided many joyful diligent hours and countless memories that he and Donna would come to relish. They once grew a beautiful palm tree in the front yard of their family home. Several years later that tree was bought by Disneyland when that corporation began their quest to create the California Adventure theme park.

Gene Bassett was a great man with endless strength and confidence. He had such a hardworking spirit. When the time came that his other truck was no longer a fire truck Gene began to search for another opportunity. Not one to just sit about Bassett began a new career with Netto Agriculture. For over 9 years Gene drove equipment season after season putting in long hours and working alongside others whom were half his age.

The sport of golf intrigued Gene by way of either physical performance or catching a round on TV he was entertained by the game. Being the hands on creative type Gene also found time to take up wood working activities. He created many festive multi piece wood works, including wind chimes and windmills.

Gene also enjoyed vacation and time with family. In the decades of his marriage to Donna together the two traveled and explored. Gearing up the R.V. the pair would voyage out on the open road. Adventuring up North to visit relatives was a usual. Taking the motorhome out for a three-day weekend celebration was utilized every chance.

Gene knew that spending time with family was precious. He was complete in his life and had worked diligently for his accomplishments. He rejoiced in memories and surrounded himself with loved ones.

Gene had become injured during a home improvement project several years ago however he was not one to sit idling. With determination and care and the ever devotion in companionship of his beloved wife Donna Jean, Mr. Bassett was able to recover and continue to live happily with his love faithful by his side.

Unfortunately ill health continued to plague him throughout his last years on earth and with the unexpected passing of Mrs. Bassett in 2015, Gene began to acknowledge that his time for adventures and diligent duties where coming to a conclusion.

First in, last out was the motto of Gene's life. He fought hard until his very last breath. His spirit was released from his worn out shell and is out now exploring the universe along his favorite shining star.

A Visitation will be held on Wednesday, June 6, 2018 from 5:00 ? 7:00 p.m. and a Funeral Service with Hanford Fire Department Honors on Thursday, June 7, 2018 at 10:00 a.m. all at People's Funeral Chapel; 501 N. Douty St., Hanford, with Burial to follow at Grangeville Cemetery; 10428 14th Ave., Armona, CA.

Robert L. Calvin (1924-2018) (Picture included)

Robert (Bob) Calvin died peacefully at home surrounded by loved ones on March 21st, 2018. Bob was born in Fairfield, CT on September 25, 1924 to Dr. Claudius Virgil and Mollie Bassett Calvin, the youngest of four children. In 1942, he graduated valedictorian from Fairfield Ludlowe High School where he excelled at cross country and track. He also achieved Eagle Scout -- an award for which he was always proud. After graduation, Bob went to Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) in Troy, NY where he studied engineering. In July of 1943, he joined the Naval Reserve and was placed in an accelerated program preparing young men to serve as naval officers in the Allied effort for World War II. He graduated from Midshipman School at Columbia University in July 1945 and was commissioned as an Ensign in the U.S. Navy. He served in the United States Naval Construction Battalion, better known as the Seabees, and was stationed in the Pacific. A few weeks later, the war ended, and in the fall of 1946, Bob returned to RPI, this time as an instructor. The following year, he entered an internship program at the Illinois Institute of Technology in Chicago. It was there that he met the love of his life, Marie Marsh, who was interning in Chicago as a social worker. Bob and Marie married on July 10, 1954 and moved to Highland Park. It was there that their two older children, Linda and Steve, were born. In 1959, Bob accepted a job offer from Pratt & Whitney in East Hartford, CT, and moved the family east to South Glastonbury, where their third child, Kate, was born. Bob worked at Pratt & Whitney and other United Technologies Companies for the rest of his professional career. For 2 years Bob traveled to Washington DC, completing a research project at the Library of Congress. Bob eventually earned a Master's Degree in Computer Science from the RPI branch in Hartford, CT. Bob and Marie joined the South Congregational Church, South Glastonbury where they were faithful members for their entire lives. Bob served as deacon and co-taught middle-and high school students for many years. He also participated regularly in the adult Bible Study class. He and Marie worked tirelessly and with great dedication to get "South Congo" to be an open and affirming church, and they were highly committed to fighting discrimination against those in the LGBT community. Bob and Marie became active members of Hartford PFLAG (Parents and Friends of Lesbians and Gay men) and served for many years as co-presidents. They fought for social justice in other areas with the same relentless fervor. Bob loved playing tennis, volleyball, skiing, and traveling around the world with Marie. He enjoyed gardening, had a passion for family genealogy and stories and was an avid reader. He and Marie were founding members of a book club group that started some forty years ago and still meets today. He was a lifelong learner and enjoyed going to Chautauqua, NY in the summers with friends to continue learning, have fun and strengthen his beliefs. Bob leaves behind his children: Linda Calvin Kern and husband Staige Kern of Raleigh, NC; Steve of Westford, MA; and Kate of South Glastonbury, CT. Bob also leaves behind three grandchildren: Ben and his wife, Holly, Megan, and Jen Kern as well as a great grandson, Brighten Kern. As was her way, she cared for her mother, father and three aunts until their passing. In her life she had many close friends and family whom she cherished dearly. Her greatest joys were Clam Boils and camping with the whole family and collecting friends that she considered family. She enjoyed baking and all those who knew her will remember her cookies, pies and Harvey Wallbanger Cakes. In their travels Mary and Jack found the place where they will rest together in peace on Ocracoke Island, NC. Ocracoke Island became a second home, and of course it wouldn't be home without the family to enjoy it with. We will have many Mary and Jack tales to remember and tell. When she moved to Old Saybrook, many a summer day she could be seen riding around Cornfield Point in her golf cart. She was also a communicant of St. John's RC Church of Old Saybrook. She leaves behind her daughters and their husbands, Carol Ann and Peter Benoit of Old Saybrook, and Mary Lou and Maurice Moriarty of Limerick, ME; as well as her best friend and adopted sister Irene Wiggins; step-granddaughter Lindsey Schreir; adopted grandchildren; many God-Children, nieces, nephews, sister-in-laws, brother-in-laws, and her very special friends. She will be missed by all. Family and friends may visit the Swan Funeral Home, 1224 Boston Post Rd., Old Saybrook, on Friday, March 28, from 5-8 p.m. A Mass of Christian burial will be held on Saturday, March 29, at 11 a.m. at St. Johns RC Church. Burial will be at the convenience of the family. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Middlesex Hospice c/o Middlesex Hospital 28 Crescent St., Middletown, CT 06457.
