William C. Augur
Death of an Old Employee of the Security Company

William C. Augur, an old and valued resident of this city, died at 8 o'clock last evening at his home, No. 55 Burton street, following an illness which began last February. Death was due to enlargement of the heart. Immediately after the first manifestation of the disease, Mr. Augur went to Florida to recuperate, but continuing to grow worse he returned home after about a week. His condition improved noticeably upon his arrival home, but there soon followed a falling spell and his last illness was the third such attack.
Mr. Augur was born May 28, 1850, at Harper's Ferry, Virginia, a son of George Lafayette Augur and Jane Lackland Chambers Augur. As a boy he witnessed many of the stirring scenes connected with John Brown's raid in 1859 and at the outbreak of the Civil War, he moved with his parents into the New England states. He lived in various cities in Massachusetts and Connecticut and in 1873 married Julia Caroline Bassett, daughter of the late Edwin C. and Caroline Hubbard Bassett of this city. In 1878 he removed to Cairo, Illinois, where he was engaged in flour manufacturing. Returning from Illinois, after a short sojourn in New England he removed to Florida, where he was for several years, until 1880, connected with the late ex-Governor George F. Drew of that state, in lumber manufacturing.
After the yellow fever epidemic of 1888 he returned to Hartford and had since been connected with the Security Company. He had been associated in positions of responsibility with this company longer by several years than any one else among the official staff or in the employ of the company. He was a member of the Sons of the American Revolution, being descended from Hezekiah Augur of New Haven, who under the command of Benedict Arnold responded to the Lexington alarm. He was for many years a Mason, and was a member of Pythagoras Chapter, No. 17, R. A. M., and of Washington Commandery, No. 1, Knights Templars. He was always a consistent church member and was a communicant of the South Baptist Church. He was a democrat in politics and about fifteen years ago was a member of the court of common council for one term. He is survived by his wife and one son, Herbert Bassett Augur, now of Portland, Oregon.
The funeral will be held tomorrow afternoon at 3 o'clock at the home and interment will be in the family lot in the Old North Cemetery.

Roy Donald Bassette Jr. (Picture included)

Roy Donald Bassette, Jr., 95, died on February 25, 2017 at St. Mary Home in West Hartford, CT with family by his side. A lifelong West Hartford resident, Don (also known as Don Don, Roy, Chief and Captain) was born on December 8, 1921 to the late Roy Donald Bassette, Sr. and the late Elizabeth Hubbard Bassette. He was predeceased by his wife of 60 years, Barbara Banks Bassette and his two brothers, John Hubbard Bassette of West Hartford (2002) and George Henry Bassette of Colorado Springs, CO (1974). Don attended Kingswood School, graduating in 1940. Together with several close friends, he founded the Tri-State Detective Agency. TSDA's amateur sleuths solved local misdemeanors, discovered the people behind neighborhood pranks and even located a missing person. As Chief, Don was featured in national magazines and was invited to visit the FBI in Washington, D.C. While earning his degree at Packard Business College in New York City, Don traveled across the Hudson to the Hackensack River where he learned to fly in Piper Cub seaplanes. He soon enlisted in the Army Air Corps and, after graduating from pilot training, was assigned to the B-26 Marauder. As a World War II pilot, he was a member of the 34th Bomb Squadron Thunderbirds. During his service he was awarded the Air Medal (10 clusters), Purple Heart, Presidential Unit Citation, European Theater Medal (6 battle stars) and the American Campaign Medal. From the time he was a youngster, Don loved letterpress and screen printing. After his service in WWII, he opened a small printing business which evolved into a division of Monsanto Company in Stonington, CT. There he headed Product Decorating where he and others pioneered the art of printing on plastics. He retired in 1982. While Don had a long career as a printer and graphic artist, his primary job was making others smile. From the neighborhood kids who were amazed at "Mr. Bassette's basement" where he printed, etched glass, vacuum formed popsicle molds, fixed anything and everything, and polished numerous stones, to the professionals who helped care for him in his last years, Don brought a particular joy to the lives of those he touched. Don is survived by three children; Libby Bassette Lennox and her husband Dean, of Chatham, NJ, Deborah Ann Bassette, Roy Donald Bassette III and his wife Bonnie, each of West Hartford. He also leaves six grandchildren and two great-granddaughters. A Memorial Service will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, March 4, 2017 at the First Church of Christ Congregational, 12 South Main Street, West Hartford, CT. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations are suggested in Don's name to the Connecticut Historical Society. Taylor & Modeen Funeral Home, West Hartford has care of arrangements.
