| 46527 | The Heritage of Wayne County, North Carolina (1982) Dr. Andrew Bass - General James Rhodes General James Rhodes (born 1765; died 1810) was the son of James and Elisabeth Rhodes. General James Rhodes stands out in Wayne County History as a merchant, land owner and the husband of Anna Bass (born 1776; died 1817), the daughter of Dr. Andrew Bass and Alice Rhodes, daughter of William and Sarah Rhodes. Dr. Bass was a leader in the American Revolution and one of the founders of the town of Waynesborough. He willed to his daughter, Anna, twenty-two slaves and more than four thousand acres of land. His will was probated April 1791 Wayne County Court. Henry Rhodes of Dobbs County, will probated January 25, 1774, is thought to be the grandfather of General Rhodes. The Rhodes Family Bible shows that General Rhodes and Ann Bass were married April 10, 1793 and that they had three sons and three daughters to wit: Joseph Andrew, James, William Thomas, Sallie Ann, Anna Maria and Rhodes Clarissa. James was the only son who lived to marry and that was to two daughters of Daniel Kornegay. After the death of General Rhodes in 1810, his widow married Cullen Blackman. Daughter Sallie Ann married Stephen Smith; Anna Maria married (1) General Edward Ward (2) Buckner Lanier Hill; and Rhodes Clarissa married Richard Blackledge Hatch. | Rhodes, General James (I41413)

| 46542 | The Herlad News, Joliet, Illinois, Saturday, August 2, 2003 Bessette overcame illness – and achieved William E. Bessette Jr. did not let adversity stop him from living a life of service to his family and his community. In the 1930s, a cow kicked a young Bill Bessette at a farm he was visiting, said his wife, Adeline "Lil" Bessette of Joliet. Bill contracted spinal meningitis as a result, but survived the ordeal. The meningitis did, however, leave him deaf in one ear, which left him unable to achieve his dream: becoming a Roman Catholic priest. He went on to become an Eagle Scout and a member of The Order of the Arrow. He remained active in the Boy Scouts as a leader and encouraged his sons to become involved, too, Adeline said. "He was a very gentle, caring man, very much a gentleman," she said. "He loved people. He loved his family: me, his children and his grandchildren. He loved everyone he met." "I never heard a mean word out of him. He always said, 'If you can't say anything good, don't say anything at all.' He opened doors for me whenever he could, always said thank you, and was always grateful for anything that anyone ever did for him." Bill was 72 years old when he died on June 14. Even when Bill was diagnosed with throat cancer five years ago and his larynx and vocal chords were removed, he never complained, Adeline said. "He always said he was sorry for what he was putting me through," she said. "He never said that he was going through hell." Religion was a big part of the Bessette family home. "We went to church every Sunday," Bessette said. "He taught his kids to be respectful and kind, and to thank God for everything they had. We prayed as a family." The Bessettes had four children: Sister Jeanne Bessette, OSF, of Melrose Park; Wayne (Jane) Bessette of Shorewood; Carl (Nelly) Bessette of Shorewood; and Celeste Bessette of Shorewood, as well as six grandchildren. After graduating from Northeastern University in Boston with a major in village management, Bill had hoped to stay out East with a job offer. But his wife hoped that they would stay in the area, where both of their families lived. Instead, Bessette began working for Material Services in Romeoville, where he decided to dig his roots and raise his family. But the long commute to the home office in Chicago eventually became a wearying one. When he was offered a job with State Farm Insurance, Bill decided to take it and worked for the company for 20 years. During those years, Bill became involved in his community. He served as a volunteer firefighter; later he served two terms as a village board member. Bill was also a past police and fire commissioner, and a former member of the Romeoville Zoning Board of Appeals and Parade Association. In addition, Bill was a lifetime member of the Hampton Park Social Athletic Club, a member of the Loyal Order of the Moose Lodge, Lockport and Joliet lodges. Illness couldn't keep Bill from doing something positive for other people. After the throat cancer diagnosis, Bill, along with his good friend Art Fenske, president of the Second Voice Club, would speak at area schools, warning students about the dangers of smoking. Both men spoke with a prosthesis as neither one had a larynx anymore. Adeline believes that her husband made a lasting impression on the grandchildren. "They are so against smoking," she said. "If they see anyone smoking, they say, 'He should have met Grandpa.' " Chicago Tribune, Wednesday, June 18, 2003 William E. Bessette Jr. William E. "Bill" Bessette Jr., age 72, Saturday, June 14, 2003 at Rush Presbyterian St. Luke's Medical Center. A former Romeoville resident, residing in Joliet. Graduate of Northeastern University in Boston and St. Philip High School in Chicago. Retired from State Farm Insurance. Served the Village of Romeoville for many years. | 46543 | The Highlander, 15 March 2023 Carlile Richmond ?Steve? Stevens 1931 ? 2023 Carlile Richmond Stevens of Granite Shoals, Texas, passed on Friday, February 24 at 91. He was born on July 20, 1931, in Pasadena, California, the third child of Norman and Winona Bassett Stevens. Carlile attended Southwestern Academy. He was a hard worker on the family's farms. He graduated from Ramona High School, class of 1949, and Stanford University in 1953 with a degree in physics. Since college he has gone by Steve Stevens. He paid for college by putting on science shows with his brother Robin and sister Toni. As part of the show, he stood on the 2-million-volt Tesla coil he built while a 2 x 4 he held over his head caught fire from the current! He met his first wife at Stanford, Audrey Williams. He kept ties to his Stanford fraternity brothers over the many years and attended reunions. As a scientist and inventor, Steve used his genius with electronics found multiple companies and earn more than 50 patents. He and his brother Robin designed and built the Flight To Mars ride at California's Pacific Ocean Park. He founded Multisonics, as part of pioneering computer driven traffic control systems. He was one of the first commercial users of an Intel chip, in the 1960's. His long-term business partner, Bill Alling, died in 2015. They split everything they made over 20 years, an amazing partnership. Steve invented a fluorescent light ballast that would have saved the US over $100 billion in energy costs. But they licensed it to a large corporation that had the hidden agent to keep it from coming to market, to not compete with their products. After a 14-year legal battle, Steve and Bill finally won a multimillion-dollar settlement. By this time, 1997, Steve had moved to Texas. His second wife of 35 years Pat (Patricia Ann Mason) died in 1995. He married Karen Stevens in 1996. He was an enthusiastic supporter of the Round Mountain Volunteer Fire Department. He was active in the Highland Lakes Men's Chorus, Blenders Barbershop Chorus, and Kiwanis. He had a great singing voice and loved singing since college where he sang with the What Four. He is preceded in death by his two brothers Dale and Robin, and his first wives Audrey and Pat. He is survived by his wife Karen and sister Toni, his children: (with Audrey Williams) Stanton (Valerie), Adrian (Mark); and (with Pamela "Pat" Mason) Sandy (Alan), Todd (Roslyn), Lisa (David), and children by marriage to Karen Stevens, David (Mary) and Heather. He had eleven grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Steve was impressively smart yet had a big heart. He always saw the best in people and encouraged them to work toward their dreams. Unfailingly positive, he looked forward to future good for himself and everyone he worked with. He helped many people succeed, both as employees and partners. He spoke to large audiences about how to build their home businesses and reduce their taxes. He was good-looking and charismatic. This, with his undeniable intelligence and expertise, was key when he testified as an expert witness in trials related to electronics. He changed the world with his inventions, and when blocked by corporate greed, he fought the corporations and won. He left behind a loving family and many friends across the Marble Falls area, as well as in California and all around the world. Family and friends are invited to attend a memorial service at The Church at Horseshoe Bay on Friday, March 31, 11 AM. In lieu of flowers, please consider donating in his honor to Round Hill Volunteer Fire Department. | Stevens, Carlile Richmond (I787)
