Veteran Principal Leaves Scene of Busy Life Work
Mrs. Mary B. Knowlton Pioneer in Education Here Resigns

?Mrs. Knowlton?s Building? belongs to someone else today, the children in the neighborhood of public school No. 12 are going to say when they are told that Mrs. Mary B. Knowlton, the principal that their mothers and fathers knew thirty years ago will not return.
Mrs. Knowlton had become such a familiar figure in the life around S. West St. that children thought she owned the building and referred to it as ?Mrs. Knowlton?s school.?
Her resignation from the principalship takes effect today. Weary, perhaps, and a little broken from a long struggle to make ?her building? among the foremost in the city, she will be unable to watch the children leave for summer vacation for the last time.
But her removal from No. 12 has brought about a general movement to acknowledge her accomplishments in a building which formerly was one of the poorest equipped and supported in the city. Former friends, patrons, pupils, subordinate teachers and school authorities are recalling her remarkable achievements, her leadership, understanding, kindness and foresight.
Beginning her career as principal almost a half century ago, when children left school at the age of 14, Mrs. Knowlton saw the need of some sort of industrial education to help them earn a living. The school itself had no equipment and little home financial baking. She appealed to the school board but before any vacation was taken, she set up makeshift shop and domestic science equipment, using old stoves, borrowed tools, sewing machines and kitchen utensils.
There was little room in the building, and Mrs. Knowlton gave up her office for a cooking room and moved her desk into a clothes closet. Her school was one of the first to have a print shop and through her efforts a community branch library was established at and early date.
The growth of musical equipment and education a No. 12 is another example of her industry and foresight. The school died not possess a single musical instrument when she became principal. She immediately organized a small club of willing mothers and raised enough money to equip an orchestra by giving entertainments and small sales.
Mrs. Knowlton was one of the city?s pioneers for special treatment for underweight children, hot lunches, rest periods, fresh air classes. Her building was among the first to have air rooms. Special opportunity classed for retarded children were opened there many years ago.
Her reputation for ability to train new teachers was recognized by school authorities and many inexperienced teachers were placed under her supervision. Four of these now are Indianapolis elementary principals, Miss Olive Selby, School No. 75, Mrs. Maude Moudy, School No. 58, Miss Olive Funk, School No. 43, and Mrs. Jeanette B. Knowles, School No. 53. Many others are city teachers.
The veteran principal?s efforts were not forgotten. Five years ago a Mary B. Knowlton Club was organized, composed of instructors formerly associated with the principal to renew acquaintances and keep alive memories of their early teacher.
Mrs. Knowlton is a descendant of the old pioneer Bass family, early Indianapolis residents. She was graduated from Shortridge High School and the Indianapolis Normal.

46675 The inventory of the estate of Thomas Elwell was dated 27 May 1706.

The exact time of their removal from Massachusetts to New Jersey is not certain. Several accounts give 1701, but a deed dated 6 Nov 1698 shows that Thomas Elwell bought 110 acres of land from Benjamin Acton.
On 22 Oct 1700, Elisha (Bassett) bought 100 acres of land on the main branch of Salem Creek from Benjamin Acton.
Thomas Elwell, Elisha's brother-in-law, bought land in the same township on 6 Nov 1698, and one Samuel Bassett bought 150 acres on 26 Nov 1698, both from the same Benjamin Acton. Samuel was presumably a brother of Elisha and of Sarah (Bassett) Elwell.

Maurice Rene ?Maury? Bass (Picture included)
1934 ? 2019

Maurice "Maury" Rene Bass Maurice "Maury" Rene Bass, a businessman in the animal health nutrition industry, died of heart failure in Charleston, SC on July 15, 2019. He was born in Oklahoma City on January 15, 1934 to Biren Oliver Bass and Helčne Coste Bass. He graduated from the University of Pennsylvania in 1956 (BS, Biology) and worked nights in a lab to pay his way through college. While at U.P. he met the love of his life, Dorothy Isabel Jackson (BS, Physical Therapy), and they married on September 15, 1956. He briefly worked as a used car salesman before taking a position as a salesman for NOPCO Chemical Company covering their Midwest territory. Over the ensuing years, many promotions, a few mergers, and acouple of job changes later, he formed his own business, the M.R. Bass Company. As his career advanced the family grew, moving from Leawood, KS to Lake Geneva, WI, to Millburn, NJ, to Shaker Heights, OH, to Wicomico Church, VA, to Edwardsville, IL, and lastly, settling on Hilton Head Island, SC in 1992. Together they raised four children, Eric of Baltimore, MD, Jeff of Boston, MA, Greg of Augusta, GA, and Julie of Peachtree City, GA. Despite a so-called retirement, Maury continued to broker deals through the M.R. Bass Company until the last month of his life. His passions were his family, cars, shopping for bargains, and the stock market. His favorite homes were the ones that could hold the most cars, but none of the homes had enough room for all of his cars. Family reunions inevitably included a day spent rearranging the garage in order to fit in another car. No one enjoyed bargains more than Maury. Always looking for a good deal, he was famous for proudly bringing home the products of his hunt, such as 100+ jars of pasta sauce, umbrellas, boxes full of little books, or flashlights of all sizes for everyone in the extended family. He closely followed the stock market and met weekly with his broker. In addition to his wife of 63 years, he is survived by his 4 children, 6 grandchildren, 2 great-grandchildren, and his sister-in-law Theresa, widow of his only sibling Biren (Brad) Bass. A celebration of life and reception will be held on August 24th from 4:30 to 6:30 pm at the Port Royal Plantation Beach House. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations in memory of Maury Bass be made to: The Bargain Box of Hilton Head (which supports local social agencies and charities), 546 William Hilton Pkwy, Hilton Head Island, SC 29926. A Wonderful Evangelist: Rev. James M. Bass
(Includes picture of Rev. James M. Bass)

Since the days of Sam P. Jones, no preacher has given evidence of the sustained power which is possessed by Rev. James M. Bass, of the South Georgia M.E. Church Conference.
There are numberless intellects which, like a bomb, can explode with a loud noise and do considerable execution; but those minds which are like fountains, or stars, are exceedingly rate.
The Indian Spring of today is like the same fountain of a century ago ? it runs on, forever, in a continuous stream, inexhaustible, eternally fresh and pure.
The stars which send down their rays to a sin-cursed world tonight, are the same that shone upon the plains of Asia, Africa, and Europe when the Chaldean wondered and worshipped, when the lost white race was rearing cities in the interior of Etiopia, and when the barbarians of the North were sharpening their swords and spears to smite the decadent Roman and Greek.
The radiance of the stars is everlasting; the source of their glory undiminished and never-failing. So it is with the creative intellect; the physical strength which is its necessary adjunct may be exhausted, but the mind itself never tires. ?Nture?s sweet restorer, balmy sleep,? is all the medicine such a brain ever needs.
The late Sam. P. Jones was one of the few men endowed with that kind of star-like genius. You could no more empty the mind of such a man than you could shut off the flow of the Indian Spring; or put out the fires that feed the stars.
After the death of the great Evangelist, I wondered whether his mantle would descend upon the shoulders of a worthy successor. It has done so; for the Rev. James M. Bass has the same marvelous power over the hearts of congregations ? the same rre gift of getting better and better, as one sermon follows another.
His manner and methods are wholly different from those of Sam Jones. Like all men of genius, his processes are original.
The men of ruts and route are prone to compliment themselves by calling the original man ?crazy?.
(But we pull them across, just the same ? don?t? we, Brother Bass?)
Born in Lee county, Georgia, on October 31, 1871, James Madison Bass was 11 months old when Yours Truly went over to Macon to enter Mercer University. He will, therefore, soon be 39 years old.
His mother, the widow of a Confederate soldier, ?raised him?; and you can see the mother?s boy in him, yet.
He joined the South Georgia Conference at Waycross, December 4th, 1894; and for 12 years he was a pastor, serving Bethel Mission, Marion Circuit, Knoxville, Unadilla, Second Street church (Macon) and Centenary church (Macon).
Four years ago he became Conference Evangelist. That he has done great good wherever he has labored can be vouched for by every one who saw and felt the effect of his glorious revival at Thomson a few weeks ago.
In a series of meetings at this much torn up town he brought about reconciliations which no one believed possible; and he wiped out old feuds which have been festering here for ten years or more.
If he isn?t a good man, inspired from on high to go about doing good, then there is no such thing in all this world.
In Mr. Stapleton, who conducts the song services, Mr. Bass has a most sympathetic and capable helper ? an auxiliary who seconds his leader in precisely the right way.
It was good to see how Preacher Bass enjoyed the signing of Stapleton and his choir; it was good to see how Stapleton and his choir enjoyed the sermons of Preacher Bass. Long life and rich reward to this noble Pair of brothers.

The stars which send down their rays to a sin-cursed world tonight, are the same that shone upon the plains of Asia, Africa, and Europe when the Chaldean wondered and worshipped, when the lost white race was rearing cities in the interior of Ethiopia, and when the barbarians of the North were sharpening their swords and spears to smite the decadent Roman and Greek.
The radiance of the stars is everlasting; the source of their glory undiminished and never-failing. So it is with the creative intellect; the physical strength which is its necessary adjunct may be exhausted, but the mind itself never tires. ?Nature?s sweet restorer, balmy sleep,? is all the medicine such a brain ever needs.
James M. Bass has the same marvelous power over the hearts of congregations ? the same rare gift of getting better and better, as one sermon follows another.

Nathan Bass

Lithuanian immigrant Nathan Bass (1886-1958) arrived in North, South Carolina about 1911 and opened a dry goods store which catered to local farmers. He traveled to New York on buying trips periodically, and in 1917 married Esther Cohen (1889-1994). They eventually had seven children: Samuel Bernard Bass (1918-1985), Herbert Bass (1920-1944), Ruth Bass Jacobs (b. 1924), Frances Bass Ginsberg (b. 1926), Marcia Bass Brody (b. 1927), Lucille Bass Lipsitz (b. 1930), and Jack (b. 1934). By 1920, their household also included Ester?s brothers, Jacob and David Cohen, as well as a live-in domestic worker, Edna Mcfadden.
Nathan expanded his business beyond North, opening stores in Wagener, St. Matthews, Saluda, and potentially Swansea and Salley. His first cousin, Nathan Stotsky, co-owned the Saluda store. By the early 1920s, the decimation to cotton crops caused by boll weevil infestations led Nathan to encourage farmers within a 50-mile range to grow sweet potatoes. He also ?pledged himself to the farmers to aid in the disposition of their crops,? and was credited with being the first to ship ?a solid carload of Porto [sic] Rican yams from South Carolina to the Northern markets. He also shipped other crops to markets in Baltimore and Washington. (Columbia Record, January 20, 1926). His efforts led to the moniker ?progressive merchant and citizen of North.? Sometime between January and February 1926, he sold N. Bass and Company?s stock and relocated his family to Morristown, New Jersey and later Lowell, Massachusetts. On the advice of an acquaintance, Nathan brought his family back to North in 1930 and incorporated Bass Mercantile Company. He continued his work with farmers, buying their corn and peas to help them earn cash for Christmas. The store closed in 1958.
