| 46707 | The Journal & Courier, July 27, 2014 Donald ?Guy? Bassett Jr. (Picture included) Donald Bassett, Jr. "Guy", 60, left this earth on April 24, 2014 at 4:35 pm in the VA Hospital, Des Moines, IA. He was born August 15, 1953 in Moline, IL to the late Donald and Ida Mae Bassett. The family moved to Monticello, IN when he was a year old. He attended Monticello schools, Twin Lakes High School, and graduated from Roosevelt Military Academy in Aledo, IL. He joined the Air Force, spending time in England, which he found very enjoyable. Guy's compassion was cooking. He was the cook at several high end restaurants, having the dream to operate his own restaurant. Guy moved to Colorado with the hopes of attaining that goal, but when it didn't work out, he went to Council Bluffs, IA as a welder for some time before spending time in IL and then moving back to Lafayette. He worked for some time at SIA, was a friend to everyone he met, would do anything to help any way he could. He loved gardening also. He always had large gardens, and planted a vegetable at the VA home which he was responsible for in their planter boxes. Guy was a very strong 'principal' minded person, got him into many troubles, but he stood by those principals. He was also a very compassionate person, loving his children to the ultimate. As his health declined, he was living in a VA Home in Marshalltown, IA. He would visit the other residents, talk with them, give them little "snacks", and make sure if they had problems, try to help solve them. He is dearly missed. His father predeceased him in 1988 and his brother Herbert in 1987. Surviving are his four children, Chris of TN, Chandler of RI, Corey and Collier of Frankfort, IN; a grandson, Jaxson; sisters, Donna Rundell (John) of CO and Joan Campbell of Lafayette; aunts, Jeanie McCormick of CA and Sherry Whitmore of IL; and many nephews, nieces and cousins. He was so very happy and proud when Jaxson came along. A Memorial Service will be held August 1st at 7:00 p.m. at Fisher Funeral Chapel (914 Columbia, Lafayette) with visitation 1 ½ hours prior to the service. There will be refreshments and visiting afterwards. He will be laid to rest August, 2, 2014 in Fairview Cemetery in Tonica, IL. You may light a Candle of Hope in remembrance of Guy and sign his online guestbook by visiting www.fisherfuneralchapel.com. | Bassett, Donald Arthur Jr (I00515)

DeKalb County 1837 - 1987, Volume Two DeKalb County Families (1987) Merle Bassett was born in Concord Township, the second of four children to Virgil & Flossie Bassett. Merle grew up on a farm, attending and graduated from St. Joe High School. After serving in the army during the Korean conflict, Merle attended Coyne American Institute in Chicago where he studied to become a telphone lineman. However, Merle did not go into that business and instead started his own business, a motor repair shop. Polly was born to Everson and Bessie DeCoursey in 1937 and attended and graduated from Auburn High School. on 28 Jul 1958, wedding bells were heard at the Auburn Presbyterian Church as Rev. Freeman married Merle Bassett and Polly DeCoursey. During the early years of their marriage, Merle and Polly worked to keep the business going. Ther hard work paid off as the Bassett Electric Motor Repair Shop is still in business today on 11th St., having moved there after a fire destroyed the business in 1964. While the business was going, Polly took some classes, and taught herself, to become an artist. That dream was realized when Polly was invited to paint one of the backdrops in the Diem Museum of Natural History in Fort Wayne. Since then Polly has painted several paintings for people, and is recognized as an outstanding artist in this area. In 1959 Tom Bassett was born to Polly and Merle. Afterwards came three more sons, Mark Bassett in 1960, Kevin Bassett in 1962, and William Bassett in 1966. One of the programs that all four boys participated in was the Boy Scouts of America in Boy Scout Troop 169, chartered by the Auburn Presbyterian Church. Scoutings highest aware is the Eagle Scout Award and Tom, Mark, Kevin and BIll have all attained the rank of Eagle Scout. Quite a record for Merle and Polly Bassett when statistics say only 2% of all boys who participate in the Boy Scout program become Eagle Scouts. All four boys graduated from DeKalb high School and have begun careers of their own. Tom graduated from ITT Technical Institute and is currently working as a supervisor at W.W. Grainger, Inc. Tom is currently serving as the Scoutmaster of Boy Scout Troop 169 and is serving as an Elder of the Auburn Presbyterian Church. Mark has degrees from Tri-State University and Saint Francis College and is currently working for the Zeller Corp. Mark also is active in Boy Scouts and the Auburn Jaycees. Kevin has obtainted a degree from ITT and is working with Merle at Bassett Electric Motor Repair Shop. Bill has been working for the past year for the YMCA at their camps as a counselor. In 1981, Merle and Polly have picked up a new hobby, raising donkeys. Merle and Polly purchased a Jack and a Jenny that came from China Lake, California, and have raised them ever since. All members of the Bassett famkly are members of the Auburn Presbyterian Church in which Polly is serving as Trustee and Tom as an Elder. | Bassett, Merle Eugene (I797)

Peggy began her nursing career in pediatrics at Westchester Medical Center where she loved taking care of "the little ones". Several years ago she joined Mount Pleasant Cottage School as a school nurse where she had the opportunity to care for a wider age range of children. Her focus through out her nursing career has been on improving the life and health of children. At Mount Pleasant Cottage School she enjoyed decorating her office to meet the season or holiday, having children come in and say "nurse Peg I love your office," providing her the opportunity to not only talk about the decorations but how a child was feeling. She fulfilled her love of design with a life long hobby of creating and producing custom designed clothing for family and friends. Other hobbies included cooking, the more difficult the recipe the better, a love of traditional antique furniture design and traveling. Trips to Europe, Egypt, Australia and New Zealand were highlights of her life, where she met and traveled with friends from Australia and Tasmania.
