Clarke F. Bassett: Is river victim
Charles Bassett, Mail carrier, drowned yesterday
Boat was overturned
Party of four were attempting to run Snake River rapids in canoe

Clarke F. Bassett, Lewiston mail carrier on route No. 2, was drowned in the Snake River yesterday a short distance above the Cox rapids when a canoe capsized and Mr. Bassett and other occupants were precipitated into the stream. With Mr. Bassett were L. R. Garby, Willard Kenfield and Miss Mildred Bishop. Mr. Bassett struck out for the shore and was drowned within thirty feet of land after swimming over 200 yards. The other passengers clung to the canoe which was righted and worked ashore.

The drowning occurred shortly after one o'clock, the party having taken the canoe to a point above the rapids to enjoy a ride through the heavy waves. The first rapids were encountered near the head of the island above the Cox rapids and it was here the canoe floundered. It seems the canoe shipped water when the first high wave was encountered and was thrown cross-wise and was filled and overturned.

The canoe is equipped with air chambers and other buoyancy provisions and the seats and cushions have the qualities of the best life preservers with capacity for carrying 240 pounds. Mr. Bassett was thrown several feet from the canoe but had a life preserver pillow. He was warned to stay by the canoe and attention was then given to righting the canoe and getting Miss Bishop to a place of safety. Mr. Bassett had started to swim to shore and had abandoned the pillow but it was not until he was widely separated from the canoe that his act had been discovered. In the mean time Miss Bishop and Mr. Garby has climbed into he water-filled canoe and Mr. Kenfield had taken a position at the stern to guide the boat into quiet water along the Clarkston shore.

Mr. Bassett approached the river shore of the island and it is stated he was not more than ten feet from land when he passed the lower point of the island. It appeared he was making for the mainland on the Idaho side and was near the shore when his first call for help was heard. At that time the water-logged boat was several hundred feet removed and he sank before assistance could be rendered. The canoe was taken ashore and emptied after which the party out across to the Idaho side but no trace of the body could be discovered.

The drowning was promptly reported and action was taken at once to recover the body but all efforts were unsuccessful. A gasoline launch and row-boats were employed and today the launch will be used to drag the river and salmon seines and nets were taken to the scene of the drowning last night and will be available for use early this morning.

Mr. Bassett was about 32 years of age and is survived by a wife, two small children and a sister, Miss Florine Bassett, teacher in the high school. He entered the post office service about eight years ago and was recognized as very efficient and trustworthy employee. He was a gentleman of fine character and enjoyed the very high regard of a wide circle of friends.

Death of Alexander A. Bassett
(From the Louisiana Press, September 3.)

In this city, at six o?clock last Sunday evening, Alexander A. Bassett. The deceased was born in mason county, Kentucky in 1831. While a small boy, his parents removed to this state, settling in St. Louis county, where young Bassett was reared, and where he spent the greater part of his manhood days. About the year 1858 he was married to Miss Eliza Edgar, of St. Louis, who lived afterward only eight years. They had only two children, a boy who died when two years of age, and Miss Zoe, a bright and accomplished young lady, who has been attending college at Lexington. Mr. Bassett was for a number of years engaged in the tobacco business in St. Louis, being associated with Col. Chiles, and the firm well and favorably known through the state. As a business man he was noted for his pleasant manner and for his strict integrity. There was nothing of the grasping or of the sordid in his nature, and every man was looked upon by him as honest and upright. While in business he made a good deal of money, but reverses came now and then, as they come to most men, and when he removed to this city a few years ago his means were quite limited. During his few years? residence here he made many friends. Modest and retiring, he was slow to make acquaintances, but no one who knew him could fail to see in him the generous and manly qualities that made him, at all times, and under all circumstances, the same quiet, unassuming and dignified gentleman. He was ill only about a week before his death, and just a few moments before he died he was cheerful and expressed himself as feeling more like himself than at any time during his illness. An affection of the heart, however, had done its work, and he passed away quietly as stated above. Monday afternoon, at the residence of Williamson Shaw, appropriate services were conducted by Elder Holt and Rev. Mr. Kemper, and Monday night his remains were taken to St. Louis in charge of the Masonic order for interment in the Bellefontaine cemetery. Mr. Bassett was a regular attendant of the Christian church. Truly, a good man has gone.

(From the Louisiana Journal, September 3)
Alexander A. Bassett, book-keeper for the Sam. Reid Tobacco Co., died in this city, between five and six o?clock Sunday evening, of heart disease. He had been ill for a short time, but on Sunday last there were some indications of improvement and his death, while not wholly unlooked for, owing to the nature of his disease, was a great shock to his relatives and friends. The funeral services were preached at the William Shaw residence, where he died, Monday afternoon, by Revs. Holt and Kemper. The remains were taken to St. Louis for interment in Bellefontaine cemetery. Beside the relatives the following persons accompanied the remains to St. Louis: A.W. Wehrman, J.M. Guile, Dr. H.B. Butts, of Globe lodge; Capt. W.H. Morrow and L.J Patrick of Perseverance lodge. Arriving in St. Louis the party were met by a delegation from Occidental lodge, No. 163, of which Mr. Bassett was a member. The funeral services were conducted under the auspices of this lodge, Wednesday afternoon, and the body then laid in its final resting place. Alexander A. Bassett was born in Mason county, Ky., Nov. 18, 1931. Married to Miss Eliza C. Edgar, in 1860. Two children blessed their union, a daughter Zoe, and a son named Charles. His daughter still survives, his son dying when a child and his wife in 1862. Has one brother living, Dr. Saml. F. Bassett, Richmond, Mo., and two sisters, Mrs. M.W. Wernwag, of Lexington, Mo., and Mrs. S.J. Martin, of Ripley county. He engaged in the tobacco business in St. Louis, the firm being known as Chiles & Bassett. He afterward went into the commission business with Craig Alexander. He removed to this city about five years ago. Mr. Bassett was a kindhearted, Christian gentleman, and became a friend of all who came in contact with him. His friends in this city mourn his loss deeply and extend their sympathy to the grief-stricken daughter, brother and sisters.

Bass To Escape A Workhouse Sentence Here
Brother To Come and Pay Up and Secure Provisional Release from Jail

Earl W. Bass, of Lima, was sentenced to six months in the Dayton workhouse and ordered to pay costs in a case prosecuted in the probate court on a charge of non-support. Bass was arrested on the charge of failure to support two children in custody of his divorced wife in Mechanicsburg. He was arrested October 19 and pleaded not guilty and was released under bond. Friday he appeared and changed his plea to guilty and received the above sentence.
A brother, however, has promised to come this week and pay up all the back payments, approximately $200, ordered by the common pleas court of Allen county where a divorce was granted the wife some time ago. Bass was ordered to pay $10.50 every two weeks and was remiss to the extent of about $200.
Judge Banta agreed to suspend the workhouse sentence if the back payments would be met as well as a regular two weeks payment in the future, and as soon as the bank payments are settled, along with the costs. Bass can secure his release from the county jail by promising to keep up payments.

George Calvin Bassett

George Calvin Bassett, 83, died of cancer on 10 October 2008 in Logan, Utah.
He was born on 14 December 1925 in Wellsville, Utah, the son of Royal Clarence
Bassett and Jennie Belle Wayman.

Calvin was born and raised in Cache Valley. He served in the U.S. Navy during
World War II in the South Pacific. Upon discharge, he entered Utah State
University and received a commission in the United States Air Force. He
married Mabel Lorraine Riggs on 12 February 1951. In 1952, Calvin and Lorraine
started their own business - the Cache Valley Roofing Company. Over the years,
Calvin designed and built homes, trailer houses and campers that are known for
their quality in design and workmanship. And even upon his deathbed, his mind
and heart were still in the process of redesigning and remodeling the Logan
Rehabilitation Center, where he died.

Calvin was a member of the Hyrum 5th Ward and a longtime member of the American
Legion. Throughout his life, Calvin has been known as a fair and honest man
with integrity and honor in his dealings with others. He has given of himself
not only to family members, but to neighbors, friends, customers, employees
and strangers without ever expecting recognition for his good deeds. He has
served as an inspiring example to those around him that accountability for
personal actions, commitment to family, hard work, kindness and compassion are
the building blocks for a good character. His judgment and advice were
respected by those who knew him. He taught his family to be proud of the
Bassett heritage and to remember who we were and what we stood for in life.

Over the course of his adult life, he explored various activities, including
raising calves in the North Forty (a small patch of grass in the back of their
home), building the family cabin in Blacksmith Fork Canyon, traveling to
Wendover for a weekend retreat and growing tomatoes. He loved to read the Big
Nickel, and once he located a possible trophy he and Lorraine would drive for
miles and spent many hours scouring the northern part of Utah in search of the
prize. Once he scoped out a possible treasure, he thrilled to the challenge of
making the deal, unless of course, he was overridden by Lorraine once s
decided to accept or reject the purchase. His sons would then be called to
help him haul the treasure home. Once in his shop, he would gleefully spend
the next several weeks rejuvenating what was once an old and useless piece of
equipment into a working piece of machinery. Over the course of several years,
he found many old tractors, and with the help of his friend, DeVoy Baxter, they
would bring them back to life.

Calvin loved to whistle, and his exuberant whistling became known throughout
the neighborhood as being the loudest and most shrill tunes to ever come out
of a person's lip. Some of his favorite whistles included the Mexican H
Dance and Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer during the hottest time of summer.

He enjoyed hunting and camping and taught his family to appreciate nature and
the great outdoors. He enjoyed the Bassett families coming together during
hunting season and spent memorable times with his sons hunting antelope and
grouse in Wyoming. He would graciously lead his own family to a mountain top,
and while Lorraine and the small children were talking, laughing and eating
around the campfire, he didn't seem to mind that the deer kept their distance.
Calvin loved chocolate covered caramels and cupcakes and enjoyed the fa
season and the Thanksgiving holiday. He shivered at the upcoming winter
frowned at anyone who criticized his cat and despised the mention of the
current Washington politician.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one sister, Sarah Muzzenta Joy; and
three brothers, Royal Clarence Jr., Warren Pierpont and Edward Wellingt
Bassett. He is survived by his wife of 58 years; three children and one
daughter-in-law, Teresa, Stanley C. (Sandra) and Craig Bassett; two
grandchildren, Amber Lynne and Cody Calvin Bassett; and two brothers, D
Wayman and Charles John Bassett. Calvin also leaves behind his beloved cat,
Squirt, who he adamantly denies was responsible for the torn wallpaper and
scratches on the woodwork throughout the house, and who, along with the entire
family, was near his side through his illness and death.

The family would like to thank the staff members who have cared for Calvin at
the Logan Hospital, Logan Rehabilitation Center (and especially Nate, Courtney
and Sarah), and to Dr. Michael Stones who has cared for him over the past 20
years.
Funeral services will be held at noon on Tuesday, Oct. 14, 2008, at the Allen-
Hall Mortuary, 34 East Center Street, in Logan. A viewing will be he
Monday evening from 6 to 8 p.m. at the mortuary and prior to services on
Tuesday from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. Interment will be in the Hyrum City Cemetery.

Roxie Aleen Richard Bassett
March 3, 1959 ? February 5, 2020

Roxie Bassett, 60, of Providence, Utah, passed away from complications of pneumonia having gracefully battled MS for 14 years on Wednesday, February 5th, 2020, in Logan, Utah. She was born on March 5, 1959, in Idaho Falls, Idaho, to Gary Richardson and Nancy Kelley.
Roxie grew up in Firth, Idaho, and attended Firth High School where she was part of the cheer squad as the school mascot. She attended Ricks College obtaining a secretarial certificate after which she moved to Logan, UT, and lived with her best friend Michelle Cox and family while working at Hillyard, Low & Anderson. She then met Michael W. Bassett and after a 3 month courtship they were sealed together for time and eternity on July 31, 1979, in the Logan Temple. Nine months and three days later their first son Jesse Beau was born. Tessa, Zachary, and Jake followed in quick succession over the next six years.
Roxie enjoyed in the peak of her health coaching softball, being PTA President and Team Mom to her children's sports teams. She was also known as the Queen of Organization. She and Mike loved to travel and their yearly trips to Lake Powell were some of life's highlights.
Roxie had a strong testimony of Jesus Christ which shined through her relationships with friends, family and those around her. During this difficult time we are comforted by enumerable stories from friends and those who cared for her who often state they have received more blessings in return, than what they gave in caring for Roxie.
Roxie is survived by her husband Mike, mother Nancy (Don) Kelley, sister Chrystal Cook, children Jesse (Sophie), Tessa (Adam) Winger, Zachary (Katie), Jake (Kami) and ten grandchildren who were the light of her life. She is preceded in death by her father Gary.
