Death of Supt. Bassett
Deputy Chief Constable of Coventry
Thirty-Six Years Police Service
City Loses Popular and Efficient Officer

We regret to record the death of Superintendent Herbert Bassett, M.B.E., Deputy Chief Constable of Coventry, who passed away at his home, Raleigh Road, Stoke, early this morning. Superintendent Bassett first encountered signs of impending illness about a year ago, and spent several months in a Birmingham nursing home, where he survived a serious operation, and was able to return to duty, but complications set in, and his condition had been the cause of anxiety for several weeks past. He was 58 years of age.
One of the most popular officers ever associated with the Coventry City Police Force, Deputy Chief Constable Bassett not only enjoyed the affection of his men but even earned the friendship of many of the offenders for whose convictions he was directly responsible, and in this connection many of his experiences were unique in police annals.

PRIDE OF TRADITION

Possessing an immense pride in the traditions of his profession, Deputy Chief Constable Bassett fostered them to the fullest extent throughout his career, and he possessed a flair for maintaining the high degree of discipline for which the City Police Force has become known without sacrificing a fraction of the friendly relationships existing between himself and the men under his control. He possessed the complete confidence of the Chief Constable (Captain S. A. Hector), as he had also enjoyed that of the late Chief Constable William Imber, and in no smaller degree that of the members of the Watch Committee.
Superintendent Bassett?s popularity was equally pronounced among the citizens as a body, who appreciated the unfailing courtesy with which he carried out his often difficult duties. His cheerfulness and good humour were rarely absent from his make-up, and few things in his life disturbed his equanimity to a greater degree than the findings of the Royal Commission on police procedure following a certain well-known case some three years ago. Superintendent Bassett felt that the restrictions then placed upon police officers in making inquiries were calculated to hamper seriously the work of crime detection.

AN EXPERT RAILWAYMAN

But for a sudden desire to join the police, Mr. Bassett might have finished his career in an equivalently high position in the railway world. When a lad he was taken into the employ of the London and North-Western Railway and worked in the locomotive fitting shops at Rugby. A very high standard of ability and conduct was demanded of the apprentices, and he often used to say that the discipline on the railway was as rigid as in the police force. By the time he had finished his shop training he could have undertaken any job on a locomotive.
He next became a fireman, first on goods and then on express trains. There was no eight-hour day. Mr. Bassett would recall the long periods he had on duty, twelve and sometimes fourteen hours. He was soon firing the engines on expresses between Rugby and London and Rugby and Crewe. The drivers in those days were aristocrats of their profession. One man for whom he fired always wore a bowler hat, frock coat, and starched collar and cuffs ? yet he always reached his journey?s end as spick and span as when he started. Mr. Bassett?s last run was on the footplate of the Scotch Express.

TURNED DOWN AS A POLICeMAN!

After nine years as a railwayman, Mr. Bassett felt a keen desire to join the police, though it would mean an immediate drop in salary of 12s. per week. On a day off he visited Warwick and saw the late Superintendent Gleed. The latter blankly refused to enlist him. ?You would be tired of the police in a month,? he said. His enthusiasm still undamped, Mr. Bassett went to Coventry, and was welcomed by the late Chief Constable Gray with open arms. ?Can you bring me another twelve men of the same type?? he asked. Mr. Bassett used to chuckle as he recalled the medical examination which followed. All the doctor did was to admire his physique, ask him a couple of quite haphazard questions, and pass him! It is a peculiar fact that the railway company never gave him his discharge. His superiors were so annoyed that they refused to discharge him, doubtless in the hope that someday he hwould return. But he was destined to make such progress in his new profession that the day was to arrive when, after he had conducted a case at Warwick Assizes, he was mournfully told by Superintendent Gleed, ?I wish I had taken you on.?

RAPID PROMOTION

Mr. Bassett was born at Brownsover, near Rugby, on October 12th, 1874. It was in 1897 that Mr. Bassett first donned the uniform of a constable of the Coventry City Police Force, and for two years he had an opportunity of ruminating upon the wisdom of his choice while patrolling the streets. Any doubts he may have entertained were largely dispelled when he was appointed to the detective department, and here his ambition soon began to bear fruit. He had found his vocation. In 1905 he was promoted detective sergeant, and in 1906 detective-inspector, remaining in charge of the detective department until March, 1919, when he was made superintendent. He was appointed Deputy Chief Constable in 1832. In January, 1932, Superintendent Bassett was appointed a Member of the Order of the British Empire for this police services. He had many commendations, including one from the Postmaster-General in 1922, and one from the War Office in 1918 in recognition of his services in assisting the administrative of the Defence of the Realm Act.

SECRET SERVICE WORK

This latter commendation had reference to work of a secret service character carried out by Mr. Bassett during the War, and concerning which he was naturally reticent, but as chief of the detective department all secret police inquiries naturally came under his supervision. He carried out a far greater volume of work of this kind than is generally realized. By no means the last exacting part of Superintendent Bassett?s work during the War and post-War period was that of dealing with the serious trade disputes which arose. It was here that his charm of personality found its full scope. Strongly opposed to the use of force, Superintendent Bassett found it more effective to gain the confidence of the men with whom he was dealing, and he succeeded in doing this with remarkably good results. His policy of peaceful persuasion, backed by transparent honesty of purpose, gained him the friendship of men who were scarecely well disposed towards the forces of law and order.

A DIFFICULT SITUATION

While acting as a detective officer Mr. Bassett handled two murder cases, both of them containing some remarkable features. In one instance an elderly local baker was found lying dead in this bakehouse. The doctor then acting as police surgeon examined the body and came to the conclusion that the man had had a seizure, and that in falling his head had struck an iron spike, and had pierce his brain. Mr. Bassett was unaware that his conclusion had been arrived at, or that the medical man had submitted his report. He examined the bakehouse and arrived at a different conclusion. Imagine the consternation at headquarters when the detective brought in a man on a charge of murdering the old baker! Mr. Bassett was even snubbed for making what was regarded as an absurd faux pas. The consternation subsided when the prisoner was found ?Guilty? at Warwick Assizes and was ultimately executed.

FRIEND OF WRONG-DOERS

On another occasion an old lady was found dead, and a medical practitioner formed the conclusion that she has succumbed to heart failure and old age. This was equally unfortunate for Mr. Bassett, who had formed the conclusion it was a case of murder. A the risk of further official complications the detective arrested a son, who was found guilty and sentenced to life imprisonment.
Nothing has been more remarkable than the friendly relations Superintendent Bassett maintained with many of the wrong-doers whom he has arrested and arraigned. He was probably one of the few policemen who received a mourning card from the family of a man whom he arrested and who was executed as a result of his evidence. For a number of years he received regular friendly greeting from a ?tough nut? who had been through his hands, and who subsequently wandered into some of the most remote parts of the world.
Superintendent Bassett leaves a widow and one son. The funeral will take place at Stoke Church on Friday at 2.45.

Magistrates? and Solicitors? Tributes

Sympathetic references to the death of the Deputy Chief Constable were made before the ordinary business of the Coventry City Plice3 Court was started today.
Mr. A.L. Bill, who was in the chair, said that Mr. Bassett?s great amiability of character had endeared him to every member of the public as well as to his colleagues in the police force. His ability in his profession, said Mr. Bill, had earned for him the recognition of His Majesty the King.
?The city, the Force, and this Court are all the poorer for his passing, and I feel we cannot let this occasion pass without showing that we sympathise with those he as left,? concluded the Chairman.
A moment?s silence, with the court officials and members of the public standing, was observed, and then Mr. S.F. Snape rose to add a tribute on behalf of the solicitors practicing at the court.
Mr. Bassett had always been faithful and assiduous in his duties, said Mr. Snape, but he also possessed a very human side to his nature. He possessed the kind of personality which it would be well for not only police officers but for all others to emulate. He would be sadly missed in the courts.
Everyone, said Mr. Snape, admired the fortitude and bravery with which the Deputy Chief Constable had faced the illness which he had so long suffered.

Isaac T. Bass was born in Miller Couty on March 12, 1853. he was a son of William Bass (1818-1892) and Melvina McCubbin (1821-1902), natives of Kentucky. The Bass family were early settlers of Miller County. In the early 1830s, Isaac Bass, Sr. (grandfather of Isaac) settled near the Osage River in Equality Township. He also served as a member of the first grand jury of the county after it was formed in 1837.
There is no record of a marrage for William Bass and Melvina McCubbin in Miller County, records. They married sometime about 1839 and became parents of several children including:
1. Nancy Bass b.c/1847 m. Charles Myers.
2. Metheldred Bass b.c/1849
3. John M. Bass b. c1861 m. Alice Williams
4. Isaac T. Bass. b 1853 m. Margaret/Maggie Williams.

7. Rial C. Bass b. 1862 m. Ada Marin 1880.
Isaac T. Bass, the fourth child of William and Melvina, married Margaret/Maggie Williams in Miller County on Aug. 31, 1875. In 1880 Isaac and Margaret/Maggie were living in northern Richwoods Township near his parents and his older brother, John M. and Alice (Williams) Bass. I believe that Maggie and Alice were sisters, daughters of John Williams who was living in Equality Township during the census of 1880.
The children born to Isaac and Maggie Bass were:
1. Myrtle Bass b.c/1876 m. Allman E. Farmer 1896
2. Henry Frank Bass. b. Aug 1880 m. Doshia L. Groves 900

4. Charles B. Bass b. Oct 1886 m. Leftie M. Burks 1906.
The neighbors of Isaac and Maggie during the Miller County census of 1900 included the families of Keyes, Myers, Davenport, James, Rhodes, Burks, Lupardus, Burlingame and Roark.
Isaac Bass united with the Ulman Baptist Church in 1908 and was ordained as a deacon the following fall and was also the church?s treasurer at the time of his death. He died Dec. 18, 1910, after a brief illness of typhoid fever. He was 57 years of age at his death. His funeral services were conducted by Rev. J.M. Bandy and he was buried at Hickory Point Cemetery. MISSOULA – Kathleen Bessette died unexpectedly in her home Sunday, Jan. 19, 2014. She was born April 7, 1970, to John D. Bessette Jr. and Leah R. Schmitz in Missoula, where she spent most of her entire life. She loved to fish with her brother Doug and partner Patricia, always trying to catch the biggest fish of the day.

Judith Bassett Mecham

Judith (Bassett) Mecham, age 82, of Columbia, completed her earthly journey on February 1, 2022, at The Bluffs following a long battle with Alzheimer?s.
Judy was born on November 23, 1939, in Salem, MA, to Gardiner and Edna (Birdsall) Bassett. Soon after, the family moved to Glastonbury, CT. She was born with a thirst for adventure. Her childhood was full of wonderful times spent exploring the woods with her siblings, and summers at ?Brewster Magic?, the family cottage on Cape Cod. As a teenager, she got her first horse and developed a passion for all things equestrian. Judy had a lifelong love of learning and continued her education into her golden years. She earned a Master of Arts in Education and a Bachelor of Science in Nursing. Somehow, she managed to have enough adventures for several lifetimes, including working on a cattle ranch in Montana for a year, entering and accidentally winning a Wild Bull Riding Contest in college, summers spent as a camp counselor at Word of Life Camp in NY, and countless cross country road trips with her children. She never passed up an opportunity to try out a new swimming hole. She was a gifted storyteller and writer who could paint a vivid picture in your mind with one of her captivating tales.
She married Clint Mecham on October 2, 1965, in Glastonbury, CT. They moved to Utah, where they raised Clint?s two sons from a prior marriage together and welcomed their first child, Paul. They later moved to Missouri, and continued to grow their family after losing Paul to a tragic accident. She poured her heart into her family, her students, and her patients. She mothered the motherless, cared for the sick and hurting, advocated for those in need, and touched countless lives with her devotion to serving others. Everywhere she went, she was drawn to those with a need she could meet. She was a devout Christian who lived out her faith by loving others well.
She will be lovingly remembered by her children, Aaron Meacham of Harrisburg, Amy Golub (Matthew) of Fulton, and step children, Joe Mecham (Linda) of Trinidad, CO, and Travis Mecham (Vera) of Broken Arrow, OK, her grandchildren, and her siblings, Gardiner Bassett Jr., Suzanne Deveraux, Mark Bassett, and Elisabeth Walls. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Clint Mecham, and son, Paul Gardiner Mecham.
The family would like to express our deep gratitude to the staff at The Bluffs who ensured that her final years were peaceful and happy.
A celebration of life will be held at a later date.

Death of Aged Resident

Jonathan Bass, an old resident of Webster, died at 6 o'clock, Tuesday morning, after a week's illness, aged ninety-five years. He was born in Northville, Fulton county, August 2, 1819. In early manhood he went to Huntington, Lincoln county, Ohio, where he settled on a farm which was then unbroken wilderness, and there remained until, in the early sixties he came to Webster to care for his father-in-law, Samuel Hagedorn. He has since resided on the same farm, one mile west of the village.

Since last April he has been totally blind, an especially, great affliction for him as he had always been a constant reader of the papers. He retained his mental faculties in a marked degree and loved the society and companionship of others.

In his death the town loses one of its oldest residents and the last one that remained on the Ridge between the two villages. He leaves one son, James Bass of this village, and two daughters, Mrs. Frank Smith of Webster, and Miss Charlotte Bass of Springville, N. Y., and five grandchildren.

The funeral will be held from his late home this afternoon, Rev. Joseph Weston officiating. Burial in Webster Rural cemetery.

Suicide of John Bass

The residents of Webster were shocked to hear of the death of John Bass, Tuesday. He had been in poor health for a long time and for the past few years had suffered such severe pain as to be out of his right mind. His wife, who had been caring for him all night, had just left the room, shortly after 5 o'clock, Tuesday morning, when she heard a noise. Going back into the room she was horrified to find her husband lying on the floor, with a wound in his left side from which blood was gushing. The unfortunate man had arisen and taken the revolver from its place in one of the drawers of a dresser, with which he did the act. Doctors Main and Foster were immediately summoned after noon. Mr. Bass was born in 1852, in Elyria, Mich., coming to Webster, when but a boy. He had been in the grocery business at Lakeside and Webster, but for the past twenty-five years had been in the marble business and for ten years he had been a partner of Ansil Wright. He leaves his widow and one son, Floyd of Buffalo; and one daughter, Fern of Webster; his father, who is ninety-two years old, one brother, James Bass, and three sisters, all of Webster. The funeral will be held Thursday and will be a Masonic funeral, he having been a member of that order for a number of years. The family have the sympathy of the entire community in their great sorrow.

William E. Bassett
Chief Petty Officer US Navy

I enlisted in the Navy on Dec. 8, 1941, the day after the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor.
I was one of the lucky sailors who did not get wounded. However, I was out there in harm’s way in both the Atlantic and Pacific fleets serving on all types of ships.
After Advanced Base Training, I went to the South Pacific, spending some time at Eniwetock and then we landed at Subic Bay in the Philippines.
I was a radioman, and we set up communication stations there and started communicating by Morse Code.
I was there when the war ended. I liked the Navy and kept re-listing, serving a total of 22 years.
I retired on June 10, 1963. The Navy made a man out of this Georiga boy. If I were young enough, I would gladly do it again.

Mr. J. Hamp Bass Dead
Native of this County and Former Citizen of Monroe
Dropped Dead on Street of Anderson

Mr. J. Hampton Bass dropped dead on the street in Anderson, S.C., last Friday. Mr. Bass was a son of Mr. Andrew Bass of Marshville, and was about fifty years old. After attending school at Rutherford College, he came to Monroe in 1890 and began clerking for Mr. F.B. Ashcraft. He married Miss Carrie Houston, sister of Mr. B.F. Houston, lately of Monroe. The remains were buried in Charlotte on Saturday. The Charlotte News says of Mr. Bass:
Mr. Bass? death occurred while he was walking on the street at Anderson, death being due to heart disease, from which he had suffered. For some time Mr. Bass? friends realized that his health was failing, but no one was prepared for the sudden summons which came to him as he passe4d on his way home.
The keenest of sorrow was felt in Anderson, where he was universally respected and held in high personal regard.
After deciding to become a merchant he went to Monroe. He soon won promotion. He afterward formed a partnership with Mr. James Morrow of Albemarle, opening a merchandise store in Lumberton, the Morrow-Bass Company. They moved the business to Anderson, S.C., where they did a fine business. Mr. R.W. Tribble of Anderson became a member of the firm. A branch house was opened in Sumter, S.C. When it was decided to move the business to Charlotte, the place of business being East Trade street, near the Farmers and Merchants? bank. The business continued there for two years, when Mr. Bass? health began to fail and it was necessary for him to give up business for a time. The firm went out of business, Mr. Bass returning to Anderson. After he regained himself, physically, he became re-associated with Mr. Tribble in business and was engaged with him in business at the time of his death. Mr. Bass was pre-eminently a good man ? kind, gentle, thoughtful, unassuming, attending strictly to his affairs and leaving others alone. He was courteous after the courteous chivalry of the old South; a gentleman in word and deed. Every man who knew him had confidence in this integrity, honor, truth and purity of life. He was a devoted husband and loyal friend. Reared in the Baptist faith he connected himself with that church some years ago.
He was a Mason and a member of the Knights of Pythias. Representatives from both orders will attend the services this afternoon.
Mr. Bass was married fourteen years ago to Miss Carrie Houston, daughter of Mr. S.F. Houston. They had no children, and Mr. Bass has no relatives except his wife.
Mr. Edward Mullen, brother-in-law of Mrs. Bass, went to Anderson and accompanied her to Charlotte last evening.
