| 47108 | The Monticello News, Thursday, July 17, 2014 John Bassett (Includes picture) John Bassett celebrated his 90th birthday with a party at his home Saturday, although the official day was Friday. He was born July 11, 1924, and has seen a lot. Mr. Bassett reminisced a little during his party. A veteran of World War II, Mr. Bassett saw the television and radio industry grow in leaps and bounds. He worked on FM and TV towers for years, beginning with WORZ in Orlando, Fla., then he moved to WJHP in Jacksonville. Next he moved to Moultrie where he worked for WMGA, and met his wife, Mary. In 1951, he moved to Atlanta, working at WAGA, where he stayed for 42 years. The Bassetts lived in downtown Atlanta on North Avenue for three years. They were three blocks from the Varsity and two blocks from the Fox he said. And Mrs. Bassett loved the Fox, he said. They moved to Decatur in 1955, and lived there until he bought property in Jasper County in 1994. When he began work at WAGA, all the offices, broadcast equipment, everything was downtown on West Peachtree. In 1966, the offices moved to the current headquarters on Briarcliff Road. He said it was a good station to work for. He talked about the people he met while he was there, including three or four presidents, as well as a number of entertainers. Mr. Bassett went to the Institute of Radio and Television in Jacksonville, Fla. on the GI bill. He began at night, working at an auto parts store during the day. Then they closed down the night program, but his employer worked with him so he could go to day school then go to work immediately afterwards. He talked about the changing in the film industry, going from the 16 mm film, and a time when it took two engineers and one announcer to get a story to the current situation where one person can do it all. It?s amazing how it?s advanced from black and white to beautiful color, he wondered aloud. He said it?s amazing to John Bassett, it used to take 13 cabinets for the sound and video, and in 1992, it was reduced to three cabinets. He reiterated about the change in equipment and what they can do with it?it?s amazing. Mr. Bassett said he entertained people in Atlanta by keeping the equipment working for Channel 5. One of seven children, he grew up during the Depression, but things weren?t so bad. He said his mother made a lot of soup. And, there was some money. A double dip ice cream cone was five cents, and some Saturdays he could get one, not every Saturday but some. He said most people could make do and were happy. He talked of making toys, such as using the spool from the thread his mother used for sewing. He also said that they listened to the radio for baseball games and news. Mr. Bassett served in the U.S. Navy as a Boatsman 2nd class from 1942 until 1947. He served on the USS Wyoming, the USS Zircon, and the USS Purdy. Mr. Bassett said that in 1938 his family sent him to school in Clio, Ga., which is in Effingham County. He lived with an uncle, and after finishing that year he went to work. One of his jobs was as a hotel bellhop, and he said he met lots of interesting people. There was a band every month and he met the likes of Woody Herman, Tommy Dorsey and Benny Goodman, among others. He said did you know that a hotel has permanent guests? Some people live there, he said. He talked about the family get-togethers that were what they did for entertainment. He said his wife?s family and mothers? families had more get-togethers than his father?s. His dad was from Fairfax, S.C., but went to Jacksonville for work. John was the first of his parent?s children to be born in Jacksonville. When asked what he remembers most, he said that Lindy hadn?t flown the ocean yet when he was born, and that sliced bread did not come along until 1935. The largest buildings in Atlanta when he moved there were the Commercial Trust and the Wyncoff Hotel, which burned in 1946. Mr. Bassett didn?t know the secret to long living. He said the good Lord took care of him, that he did some foolish things through the years. As for health issues, he does not smoke now, but he did for more than 35 years, and said he quit one day when he realized he wasn?t enjoying them. The Atlanta Journal-Constitution, October 7, 2016 John Bassett Jr. BASSETT, Jr., John Wesley John Wesley Bassett, Jr., age 92, of Monticello, Georgia, passed away Wednesday, October 5, 2016. | 47110 | The Montrose Daily Press, Colorado, Thursday, 13 August 2026 Christina Bass October 6, 1973 ? August 8, 2026 It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Christina Bass, 52, on August 8, 2026, after a long journey with multiple health battles. Christina was born in Orange County, CA, and grew up along the coast, graduating from Tustin High School in 1992. She loved the warm California weather, the beach, and the carefree feeling of growing up near the ocean. Those early years shaped her love for the outdoors and her adventurous spirit. After moving to Montrose, she continued to enjoy getting outside, exploring, trying new hobbies, and making memories with the people she loved. Christina was one of the strongest and most resilient women you could ever know. She faced more challenges than most, yet no matter what life put in front of her, she met each one with courage and strength. She always found a way to smile, laugh, and keep going. Christina had a beautiful ability to find joy in the simplest things in life and to make the most of every moment. One of Christina's greatest joys in recent years was becoming a grandma. She absolutely adored her grandchildren and they adored their grandma just as much. She loved watching them grow and spending time with them, and the bond they shared was truly special. Christina will be deeply missed by the family she loved so dearly, including her daughter, Hannah Kaylor (Bass), and her husband, Benjamin Kaylor; her grandchildren, Liam and Natalie Kaylor; her mother, Diane Bass; and her brother, Cliff Bass. She was preceded in death by her father, James Bass. Christina will be remembered for her strength, her spirited personality, her sense of adventure, and the way she could bring laughter and life into the moments she shared with others. She leaves behind a lifetime of memories that her family will hold close. No formal services are scheduled at this time. The family is incredibly grateful for the love, kindness, and support shown to them during this difficult time. | Bass, Christina M. (I1011)

| 47124 | The Morning Herald, Gloversville and Johnstown, N.Y., Saturday, June 3, 1933 Asa B. Peake, Last of Pioneer Family, Dies Very Suddenly News of Death of Fulton Co. Commissioner of Jurors Whose Useful Life Was Great Factor in Progress of City Will Be Received With Shock by His Many Friends in Glove Cities Asa Bassett Peake, Fulton County Commissioner of Jurors, the last descendant of one of the pioneer families of Gloversville, dropped dead in the bathroom of his home, 53 Prospect avenue, yesterday afternoon at 5:30 where he was discovered by Mrs. Frances Whitaker, the housekeeper. She summoned Dr. Homer H. Oaksford, but Mr. Peake was dead when the physician arrived and he notified Coroner Dr. Robert L. Ellithorpe, who rendered a verdict that death was caused by heart trouble. News of Mr. Peake?s death spread rapidly through the city and was received with a shock by his many friends in the community and the county. FOUND LYING ON FLOOR Mr. Peake was about the city yesterday doing business as usual and greeting friends. He had been out for a short auto ride with friends during the afternoon and returned home a short time before he was taken with the fatal attack. He went to his room after he entered the house. Mrs. Whitaker said she heard a noise when he fell in the bathroom adjoining his room, but did not think anything about it at the time. A few minutes later she called him to dinner and when he died not respond she entered his room and discovered him lying on the floor. Asa Bassett Peake was born in the Village of Gloversville on August, 27, 1859, the son of Dr. Marcus T. Peake, well known physician, and Mrs. Sophia (Bassett) Peake. His father was born in Delhi, N.Y., in 1803. His father and his mother were both descendants of early New England families who moved to New York state. His father was admitted to the practice of medicine in Delhi in 1830 and later took a post graduate course in the Albany Medical college. An older brother, Dr. William Peake induced Dr. Marcus Peake to vist Gloversville. Dr. Peake visited the village in 1856 and was so favorably impressed with the community that he purchased a lot on East Fulton street for his residence and another on North Main street for business purposes. Dr. William Peake was located in Kingsborough at the time and later settled in Johnstown where he carried on the practice of medicine until his death. BROUGHT FAMILY HERE A little later Dr. Peake brought from Delhi his family, comprising three sons and two daughters. He had a three story brick building erected on the North Main street land he purchased and in that building conducted the first drug store to be started in the village. He died in 1865. There is a portrait of him done in oil in the Nathan Littauer hospital at the present time. The store property is at present a part of the Kresge property, while the Peake residence on East Fulton street is now the parish house of St. Mary?s Catholic church. Dr. Peake?s widow survived him by 27 years. Their children all lived to mature ages and passed away without leaving any descendants. The death of Mr. Peake yesterday brings to and end the genealogy of the family. Mr. Peake was educated in the Gloversville schools and his friends knew that his education and culture thus acquired grew and broadened through constant and serious reading, study and travel. His business career began several years before he reached his majority when he entered the employ of Kent & Stevens, predecessors to Booth & Company, now the Surpass Leather company. He served for some time as clerk in the store. His close study of those he served in the store soon enabled him to speak German, French and Italian fluently. He engaged in the boot and shoe business from 1878 until 1883 and later he was employed with G. Levor & Company for two years. From 1886 until 1893 he was a member of the firm of Peake & Levi, shoe dealers in the Littauer block. Later he spent two years in Rochester and upon his return to Gloversville he re-entered the boot and shoe business and continued in that line for 11 years. Some time later the firm of A. J. Beach & Company, manufacturers of sporting goods, was organized and he became active in the concern and was with its successor, the late Ralph Bradford. He was associated with the business until a few years ago when he became engaged in public service. ONE OF ORGANIZERS In 1877 at the age of 18 he was one of the organizers of the famous Neptune Hose company and in 1892 he was one of the organizers of the Gloversville lodge, 226, B.P.O. Elks and served as the fist exalted ruler of the lodge. Mr. Peake was a member of the group of 15 men who organized the Eccentric club. He was the last survivor of the group which organized the Eccentric club and for several years past has been one of its honorary life members. In 1900 Mr. Peake became captain of the recently organized Company G, now Company H, 105th Infantry, New York National Guard. He continued as captain for a period of 12 years and it was largely through his persistent efforts that the armory building on Washington street was erected. Mr. Peake like all the members of his family was an earnest and steadfast member of the Republican party. He served as the representative of the Third Ward in Gloversville in the Fulton County Board of Supervisors from 1926 until 1931 and was named chairman of the board for one term. In 1931 he was named Commissioner of Jurors. He also served for years as a member of the Board of Trustees of the Gloversville Free Library. Mr. Peake has been affiliated for many years with the First Congregational church. He was a very active member of the Johnstown Historical society. As a lifelong resident of Gloversville Mr. Peake was thoroughly acquainted with its history and frequently was called upon to recount it at public gatherings. He was one of the principal speakers at the banquet in the Kingsboro Presbyterian church at the dedication of the memorials to Rev. Elisha Yale and Horace Sprague. As a citizen he was at all times active and greatly interested in public affairs. His sudden death is a great shock to the community and it removes one of the city?s outstanding residents. ONLY ONE SURVIVOR The only survivor in Gloversville is his second cousin, Mrs. James Ridley, formerly Miss Katie Neff. The funeral arrangements were not complete last evening and will be announced later. | Peake, Asa Bassett (I11486)

| 47138 | The Moscow-Pullman Daily News, Idaho, Saturday, 9 December 2023 Day LaMar Bassett Day LaMar Bassett, 101, of Pullman, passed away peacefully Monday, Dec. 4, 2023 at Bishop Place Senior Living in Pullman, surrounded by his sons. Day LaMar Bassett was born in Layton, Utah, on June 4, 1922. An only child, Day grew up on his family's horse-powered farm, where he played with cousins and weeded endless rows of onions. In winter he strapped on barrel staves and skied down his snowy shed roof, aiming for planks to carry him to the ground. His childhood included outhouses, electricity used only for lights, crank telephones with party lines, shared bathwater heated on a coal stove, crawling under coop floors looking for chicken eggs, and listening to a crystal radio set in a freezing bedroom with a wrapped hot rock at his feet. In his Depression-era teen-age years, he found enjoyment fishing, hunting and playing ball with cousin Bob, but life became difficult as his father's health failed and family finances collapsed. When World War II started, his future, including further education, became uncertain. Having taken civilian pilot instruction at Weber College, Day enlisted in the U.S. Army Air Corps. He trained as a pilot and qualified as a flight instructor. After teaching many students, some of whom would later perish, he also trained to fly the B-17 and B-29. He served as a B-17 test pilot, assuring that repaired planes were functional for combat. He had been ordered to the Pacific Theatre as a B-29 Aircraft Commander when the war ended. These years changed the trajectory of Day's life in positive ways. He exchanged social reticence and an uncertain future for highly developed skills, disciplined study habits, well-earned praise from peers, enduring friends and increasing faith. He, like most who served, left those years determined to live a life worthy of the sacrifice of fallen comrades. Day earned a bachelor's degree in civil engineering and a master's in agricultural engineering at Utah State College. While there, he met his future wife Zella who served his meals at Mrs. Murray's boarding house. Enchanted by this beautiful girl who was faithful, funny, smart, athletic and a born leader, he finally gained enough courage to ask for her hand. They were married in the Logan temple in 1946. Always self-deprecating, Day enjoyed telling of their honeymoon flight to Denver during which he, the bomber pilot, got airsick. Day took his first job designing irrigated farms in the Columbia Basin using water from Grand Coulee Dam. He and Zella spent four years in Ephrata and Othello before moving to Pullman in 1954, when Day joined the faculty at Washington State College. They raised four boys, countering youthful rowdiness with expectations of hard work, academic excellence, piano practice, Scouting and church participation. Day made life fun with hunting and fishing trips, participation in Scouting events, Christmas treasure hunts, cold water pitched into showers, and attendance at games, plays and recitals. Day continued to serve in the Air Force Reserve, sang bass in the Washington Idaho Symphony Chorale for 28 years, and served extensively in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He served as Bishop during the construction of the LDS chapel on Orchard Drive in the early 1960s, leading efforts in site acquisition, design and construction using mostly member labor. He extended his formal education with a Ph.D. from the University of Idaho. As much as Day and Zella loved Pullman, they also loved their family members in Utah, and drove to Utah so frequently that they bought a second home there. Day and Zella were great hosts, rewarding all comers with home-cooked meals at beautifully appointed tables. During his teaching and research career, Day went on several WSU-sponsored trips to share irrigation knowledge. He and Zella spent a summer in Portugal, a year in Jordan, and two years in Pakistan. After he retired, he and Zella traveled extensively, gardened, and visited children and grandchildren. They also served two Church missions specializing in employment and water use. Day wrote his autobiography as well as biographies of Zella, his mother Vera, and father Robert (now available at the Salt Lake FamilySearch Digital Library). Following Zella's tragic death seven years ago, Day continued to welcome visitors, send birthday cards, attend athletic events, savor Ferdinand's chocolate malts and enjoy drives around the Palouse. His last years were blessed by his physician Dennis Simpson, MD, and his caregiver, MiKell Wells, to whom the family is eternally grateful. Day Bassett is survived by his sons Mark, Kent (Joellen), Greg (Shirley) and Doug (Marilee), 16 grandchildren and 49 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife Zella and his daughter-in-law Elaine Bassett. Funeral Services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 16, at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 1055 NE Orchard Drive, Pullman. A viewing and visitation will begin prior to the service at 11:30 a.m. Burial will occur at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Dec. 19, at the Kaysville, Utah City Cemetery.
