Howard Bassett: Hiker at rest along the trail he loved best

They "buried" Howard Bassett last Wednesday. Thirty of his friends gathered on the Quinnipiac Trail in Prospect - at a section which he personally maintained for many years - and they scattered his ashes.

It was pouring rain but his friends stood there, on the banks of one of Bassett's favorite streams, near the small wooden bridge he had built across it, and they spoke about him in an informal eulogy.

What could you say about this remarkable man? You might note that he ran away from home when he was 14, leaving New Haven to become a cowboy, hopping onto freight trains as he made his way west.

Bassett held down many jobs out there; for a time he was a bronco-buster in a rodeo. Later he drifted to Texas and joined the U.S. Cavalry.

With his wanderlust somewhat sated, Bassett eventually returned to Connecticut and took a job with the Southern New England Telephone Co. But still he stayed outdoors, putting up telephone poles in rural areas.

After more than 30 years with SNET, he retired early to devote more time to his first love: hiking. Bassett was one of the first people to hike the entire Appalachian Trail alone, 2,000 miles from Springer Mountain, Ga. to Mt. Katahdin, Me. It took him 166 days. He was 62 then.

"Howie was a quiet man who preferred to walk in the woods," said his longtime friend, Ray Wilson of Wolcott. "He was kind of a loner.

"But the Appalachian Trail changed him. After he walked the trail, he became more outgoing."

During that trek, he went nearly two weeks without seeing another human being. Yet along the way he had some wonderful encounters - he stopped to help a widow and her two sons cut their alfalfa before the rain came - and when he returned home, he found he was a local celebrity.

He never had any kids and he outlived two wives. He spent his last years alone in a house he refurbished that overlooked Hitchcock Lake in Wolcott.

"He was very secretive about everything he did," Wilson said. "He wouldn't say where he was going unless he wanted somebody to take care of his cat."

Bassett's life seemed akin to that of Henry David Thoreau on Walden Pond. "He did everything by himself," Wilson said. "He was a damn good carpenter but he didn't like power tools. He was deathly afraid of a chain saw.

"He had an old television set but I wouldn't give it to my worst enemy," Wilson laughed. "That's the way he lived. He finally got a new refrigerator when the handle broke off. He liked to make things last."

Bassett was afraid of airplanes and couldn't swim, Wilson said. "But he would go canoeing as long as we gave him a life preserver."

In his later years, Bassett bought a camper and traveled all over the country, hiking in many national parks and Alaska.

During the last weeks of his life, he repainted his house and did over the markers on his part of the trail, all the way from Sleeping Giant Park in Hamden to Prospect. "I guess he knew his time was coming," Wilson said.

Bassett died at the wheel of his camper one night last November while driving to the annual Blue Trail banquet.

"Apparently he had a stroke," Wilson said. "He died the way he wanted to. He was afraid of going to a convalescent home."

Bassett had asked that his ashes be spread along his favorite part of the 20-mile trail section he tended. And he wanted that done in the springtime.

Bassett, who was 81 when he died, is survived by a half-sister, Emmeretta Holway of West Haven. Her husband, Thomas Holway, said, "Howard was the type of person who didn't have many friends." But then he said, "He is greatly missed by a great many people."

Dobbie Coleman Is Wed In Florida At Father's Home;
Bride of Theodore S. Bassett In Ceremony at Palm Beach
Palm Beach, Florida - March 24 (AP) - Miss Susan F. (Dobbie) Coleman was married to Theodore S. Bassett of London and New York on Monday at the home of her father and stepmother, Mr. and Mrs. George L. Coleman.

The Monterey Herald

Susan Coleman "Dobbie" Bassett de Segur
May 9, 1942 - November 4, 2010
Upperville, Virginia - Dobbie Bassett, 68, died Thursday night at her home after a long illness.
Ms. Bassett was born in Miami, Oklahoma to George L. and Elizabeth Fullerton Coleman in 1942. Her family moved to Pebble Beach, California a few years later because of her father's love of golf. Dobbie began riding horses as a very young child and was a consummate horsewoman from the start. She competed nationally from a young age, under the expert eye of the renowned horse trainer Richard (Dick) Collins. She won blue ribbons on her horse Fancy Free throughout her entire childhood. Her striving for perfection and her competitive spirit, later served her well when showing and winnng with her beloved Cardigan Welsh Corgis.
Her education included Santa Catalina School for Girls in Monterey, California and then onto Garrison Forrest in Maryland. She attended finishing school in Switzerland, where she learned to speak French fluently, and then went to Florence, Italy to study art history. Moving to New York City at age 20, Dobbie studied interior design and fashion, and developed her innate sense of style and flair, which would be one of her trademarks throughout her life.
Dobbie's passion was her animals - specifically horses and dogs. Through her young daughter, Caroline's Corgi, Gwendolyn, she fell in love with the breed. She moved to Middleburg, Virginia in 1983 where she could live out her dream of fox hunting in the beautiful Virginia Piedmont, and continue breeding and showing Cardigans. She focused her creative energy in breeding championship lines of this wonderful breed and made an enormous contribution to the Corgi world.
She had two marriages. She was married to Theodore S. Bassett and they had one daughter, Caroline. Her second marriage was to Pierre de Segur in Paris, France, a city very dear to her heart.
She had many friends from all walks of life. Dobbie Coleman Bassett de Segur will be missed by all who knew her.
She is survived by her only daughter, Caroline E. Bassett, who resides in New York City and sister, Sarah Coleman Cecconi, a long-time resident of Pebble Beach.
In lieu of flowers, donations would be most welcome to the Cardigan Welsh Corgi Association of America (CWCCA), c/o Ingrid Greca, P.O. Box 0069, Willoughby, Ohio 44094, "earmarked" for the "Veterans".

Perry R. Bass, Patriarch of Fames Texas Oil Family, Dies

Perry R. Bass, the patriarch of a family that came to symbolize wealth and oil in Texas, died yesterday at the age of 91.

Mr. Bass was at the center of a family business that traces its origins to Sid Richardson, the Texas wildcatter who borrowed $40 from Mr. Bass?s mother during the Depression and struck the Keystone and Slaughter oil fields in West Texas.

On his death in 1959, Mr. Richardson, a bachelor, gave most of his money to charity, but set aside about $11 million in oil properties and real estate for his only nephew, Perry.

Mr. Bass learned the oil business at the elbow of his uncle, who used to conduct business out of a Fort Worth drugstore. With his uncle?s training and money, Mr. Bass set up Bass Brothers Enterprises in 1960, to manage the family?s enormous oil and ranching interests, including the Sid Richardson Energy Services Company, which the family sold late last year for $1.6 billion.

But, as soon as he could, Mr. Bass groomed his four sons to take over the business, which blossomed under the guidance of Mr. Bass?s eldest son, Sid. Forbes magazine estimated the family fortune last year to be over $9 billion, although it had been as high as $11 billion, several years ago.

Once Mr. Bass gave the reins to Sid, the family diversified its holdings outside of energy by buying stakes in undervalued companies and then pushing for management changes. Some paid off and some did not: One target, Texaco, paid Mr. Bass and his sons $400 million in greenmail to go away; stock market reverses after Sept. 11, however, forced the family to sell about $2 billion in Disney shares.

Yet for all the family?s swashbuckling history ? and for their financial ups and downs ? they have remained extremely private, shunning the press and refusing interviews. One glimpse of the family fortune came in 1980 when Mr. Bass had to file a financial disclosure statement when he became chairman of the Texas State Parks and Wildlife Commission. It showed the family collected royalties from 68 oil companies in 12 states and owned a large part of downtown Fort Worth.

Perry Richardson Bass was born on Nov. 11, 1914, in Wichita Falls, Tex. Soft-spoken, Mr. Bass graduated from the Hill School in Pottstown, Pa., and in 19837 graduated with a degree in geology from Yale. He later donated $20 million to build a molecular biology center at Yale.

A passionate conservationist and outdoorsman, Mr. Bass was also an expert sailor. He was navigator for Ted Turner?s American Eagle when it won the World?s Open Racing Championship in 1972.

Under the family?s leadership and philanthropy, downtown Fort Worth was transformed from a collection of storefronts to a glistening urban center. The renovation included the Nancy Lee & Perry R. Dr. Mary Imogene Bassett
Special to The New York Times.

Cooperstown, N.Y., Oct. 22 - Dr. Mary Imogene Bassett, Chief of Staff
of the $2,000,000 hospital opened here June 1 and named after her, died
suddenly Saturday at her home here of a paralytic stroke. She was 60 years
old, the daughter of two physicians, Drs. Wilson T. and Mary Augusta Bassett,
of this city.
Mary Imogene Bassett - A Brief Biography
provided by Jane Schlesser, Director of Public Relatio
Bassett Healthcare, Cooperstown, New York

Mary Imogene Bassett was born to Doctors Wilson and Mary A. Bassett in
Mount Vision, New York in 1856. In 1874, the family moved their growing
medical practice to Cooperstown. They practiced in a house that still stands
on lower Fair Street and treated their patients for $6-$12 week -- including
room and board!
At a time when few women found recognition in medical careers, Dr.
Mary Imogene distinguished herself early. She was only 31 when she graduated
from the Woman's College of Pennsylvania. She received further training and
became an instructor in Nervous Diseases at the Philadelphia Polyclinic and
College for Graduates in Medicine. She published several articles in th
field and was subsequently elected delegate to the Philadelphia County Medical
Society and the American Medical Association (AMA).
After the death of her mother in 1893, she abruptly turned to a rural
general practice in Cooperstown with her aging father. Her father died in 1905
and Dr. Mary Imogene continued alone. She had a very active practice in and
around Cooperstown. She was a beloved, dedicated physician who was called "Dr.
Molly" by most of her patients.
Among her friends and patients was Edward Severin Clark. He had great
admiration for Mary Bassett. According to anecdote, he heard her express a
wish for a laboratory to provide scientific data with which she and the other
Cooperstown practitioners could better care for their patients. Mr. Cla
granted her wish, building not only a laboratory, but a fully-equipped 100-bed
fieldstone hospital building. Named "The Mary Imogene Bassett Hospital", it
was meant as a living memorial to Dr. Bassett.
In 1918, the hospital was nearing completion and was offered by Mr.
Clark to the xxx for use as a convalescent home for aviation officers until
late 1919. The public opening of the hospital came in June 1922, with D
Bassett serving as chief of staff. Tragically, she suddenly died of a stroke
at home in October of that year. Mr. Clark directed that the light in t
cupola be lit every night in memory of her - and it is to this day.
