George Washington Russell (Picture included)

George Washington Russell of Hazlehurst. Representative from Copiah County, was born November 14, 1879, near Monticello, in Lawrence County, Mississippi. His father, Fletcher Russell, was born near Birmingham, Alabama, where he lived until about ten years of age, when he removed to Louisiana. It was while he was living in that state that the Civil War broke out, and he enlisted and served two years as a private in the Confederate army. After the war he removed to Mississippi. He was the son of James A. and Sarah A. (Moore) Russell. George Washington Russell?s mother was Sallie Elizabeth Bass, the daughter of James Bass. Representative Russell obtained his education in the public school of Shady Grove, Copiah County, and in the Hazlehurst High School. He has passed his entire life on his farm, three miles east of Hazlehurst, with the exception of two years that he spent in Jackson as representative of the Farmers? Educational and Co-operative Union. Mr. Russell was one of the first to join that organization, and he was its first local and first county Secretary-Treasurer. On March 13, 1906, he was selected Secretary-Treasurer for the State, in which office he served for four years with great credit to himself and with the most excellent results for the Union. Mr. Russell has had considerable business experience. For several years he traveled as collector and salesman for a fertilizer house; he was an incorporator and secretary of the Executive Board of the Memphis Cotton Company of Memphis, Tennessee; was a member of the Executive Board of the Farmers? Union Warehouse (Cotton) Company, of Jackson, Mississippi; and was, during 1908, editor and manager of the Union Advocate. When the people of his County sought to find a representative who should unite the qualities of a successful farmer and an able business man, they naturally selected Mr. Russell as nominee. He was elected to serve from 1916 to 1920, and has already done good work upon several of the important committees. Mr. Russell has long been a leader in church and community work. In 1888 he united with the Methodist Church, and in 1915 joined the Baptist Church at Damascus. He has been Secretary of the Shady Grove Sunday School for fifteen years, and a trustee of the school ever since he joined it. He is a member of the Knights of Phythias and the Woodmen of the World. The maiden name of Mr. Russell?s wife was Lena Pearl Price; she is the daughter of Tom C. and Lula Norman Price, of Hazlehurst. Fatal Accident to an Early Settler

Last Tuesday death came suddenly to Peter Bassett, of this township. That morning he had his help picking apples on his farm, and repeatedly cautioned them to take no risks. About 9 o?clock he went to the orchard and climbed up about twelve feet in a tree to help, when suddenly he pitched forward and fell to the ground, striking heavily on his face and head. At first those who saw him fall thought him dead. He was carried at once to the house and Dr. Burns hastily summoned. He partially regained consciousness for a short time but spoke only a few words and died of internal injuries a few hours after the fall. The funeral was held Thursday morning, at the Methodist church. Rev. A.M. White, of Chicago, one of his former pastors, officiating. The church was filled with the friends won by a worthy life. His sons from Nebraska were permitted to be in attendance with the rest of the family, at the funeral.
Peter Bassett was born in Andes, Delaware county, N.Y, almost seventy years ago. In 1844 he came to Buffalo Grove and his home has been here during the fifty years that have intervened.

Stephen J. Bassett

Last week we briefly announced the death of Stephen Bassett, which occurred about two o?clock Friday morning, April 9th. For a year his health had been failing, and much of the time he had been a great sufferer. The funeral was held Sunday at the Methodist church at the usual hour of the morning service, and the church was crowded. The Rev. H.T. Clendenning officiated, delivered a most excellent sermon. On account of the funeral there was no services at the Presbyterian church, the congregation uniting with their Methodist brethren to honor the memory of one whose quiet, unassuming Christian character during many years had won for him the esteem of all who knew him.
Stephen J. Bassett was born in Delaware County, New York, August 6, 1822. At the age of ten his parents removed to Coldwater, Michigan, where he resided until 1853, when he removed to this county. In 1855 he was married to Miss Victoria Reed, and since that time he has resided on his farm in Lincoln township. In 1860 he united with the M.E. church of this city, and he died in its communion. He was the father of seven children, all of whom except one remain to mourn his loss.

Abigail ?Abby? Lynne Bass

Abigail "Abby" was born on June 5, 1957, to Wesley and Clara Louise Pelsue in Joplin, MO. She spent most of her youth in Joplin where she had a passion and strong love for animals. It all started with her horse Velvet and her collection of toy horses that she would later pass down to her own children. Over her youth, her father rescued several Shelties. Influenced by her father, she recently adopted Lucy, a rescue Sheltie along with her rescue Bruiser the ten-year-old Chihuahua. Her love of cats came from her grandmother where they had barn kittens growing up. She adopted Little Kitty who was, in her words, her sidekick.

The family moved to Topeka, KS during her junior high years where she fell in love with the arts. In high school, she participated in the dance squad and was the baton twirler, always keeping the crowd entertained with her infectious energy and smile. She attended the University of Kansas her freshman year to study Theater and Dance, staying active in community theater and spending the next summer in Wichita, KS to perform with the Wichita Summer Theater. She continued her studies at Oklahoma City University earning Undergraduate and Masters degrees in Theater & Dance. For many years she was with the Surrey Singers representing OCU throughout Oklahoma and surrounding states. Abby was active in several Lyric Theater summer productions singing, dancing and acting with several photos of her performances still hanging

in the lobby of the OCU theater of performing arts. She was well known throughout the theater and dance community and directed the dance choreography performed with the Oklahoma Symphony Orchestra led by Guy Frasier Harrison as well as performing in summer theater directed by Carveth Osterhaus. Abby taught jazz dance at Ballet Oklahoma and the Bill Graham Dance Studio. She was highly regarded as a leader in theater, dance, singing, and instructing productions for many years.

Abby and Jerry met in early January 2004 during church. Not surprisingly, their first date in March was attending a comedy play at Carpenter Square Theater. Realizing the love they both had for all types of theater arts, that night sparked the beginning of their 19 year love story, marrying in August 2005.

Abby "always" made any personality laugh with her witty jokes and passion to make people feel seen and heard. She was a joyful presence with her wide eyes, short beautiful blonde bob and whimsical reading glasses that she creatively chose for every occasion. We will miss her immensely.

Abby was preceded in death by her parents Wesley and Louise Pelsue, her oldest brother Wesley Edwin Pelsue III (Leeds), her beloved Calico cat Precious and Shetland Sheepdog Laddie.

Abby is survived by her daughter Hilary Jamieson, husband Sean Jamieson, granddaughters Blakely and Isla of Bedford TX; daughter Jamee Barwick, partner Jack Merrill of Fort Worth, TX; Husband Jerry and his daughter Katie Bass of Spring Hill, FL and son Whit Bass, wife Kelli Bass, granddaughters MacKenzi and Sophia of Edmond, OK; her brother Mitch Pelsue, wife Louise Pelsue of Janesville, WI, their children Fran Clouse, husband Jeremy Clouse, daughter Camdyn and son Nolan of Mount Pleasant, South Carolina; Brian Pelsue, wife Amy Pelsue, sons Ashton, Chapman and twins Carter and Cole of Janesville, WI; David Pelsue, wife Kelly Pelsue, son Jackson of Fairfield, CN and daughter Danielle Pelsue of Shorewood, WI. And many more nieces and nephews across the country.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to The American Cancer Society or Free To Live Animal Sanctuary. Services will be held Thursday March 30th, 2023, beginning at 11:00 a.m. at First Presbyterian Church of Edmond.
