A tribute to my lovely mother-Sue Bass: Today I had to say goodbye to my precious mother. It was so hard. It has been so sad to see her suffer so much of the past several years. The way that she handled it was remarkable. I just really don't remember her complaining even though things got so bad at times. My son was talking to me today about how that so much of who I am is what I have learned from my mother. I guess I had never really thought about it that way, but IT is so true. She taught me so much about being a wife, taking care of children, cooking, cleaning, and so many other things, (including to wash my hands before I cook!-She believed in being clean in the kitchen). Mother had so many friends and that was because she was a friend. She loved being around people. My mother also was a God-fearing woman who was fervent in her Christian beliefs. She has done many good works for others. She is now at rest from her works, and they have followed with her. It is comforting to know that. As she was dying today I said to her about Jesus talking to the man on the cross saying "Today thou Shalt be with me in Paradise." I shall miss her so much, but if she couldn't get better, she is so much better off. May God bless and keep her in his care. I miss you Momma. Love, Renee | Hornsby, Sue H. (I61611)

| 47572 | The Oregonian October 18, 2012 Leslie A. Cook Rist (Picture included) Rist, Leslie A. Cook, 68, January 23, 1944 - October 14, 2012 - Strong and graceful to the very end, Leslie took Jesus' hand and danced her way into heaven Sunday morning. Her final days and hours found her closely surrounded by loving family and friends. Leslie was born in Los Angeles to Harry and June Bassett. She was the older sister and oft-challenged ringleader to twin brothers, Tom and Jerry, sister Candy, and little brother, Timmy. She grew up in Southern California in the days of poodle skirts and Ray Charles' "I Can't Stop Loving You." Her blue Schwinn bicycle had tassels on the handles, a basket in the front and playing cards clipped to the spokes. Leslie married her high school sweetheart, Clint Cook, and together they had three children, Cindy, Randy and Chris. They moved to San Antonio, Texas in the early 60s, where Clint served in the Air Force and Leslie began her life-long career in dental office management. In the mid-60s, they returned to Southern California and Leslie supported the family while Clint attended college. In the early 70s the family moved to Damascus. Soon after the move, Leslie applied for a front-desk job with Gladstone dentist Lynn Griffith. Leslie stayed with Lynn until his retirement 32 years later. In the early 80s, Leslie and Clint separated and in 1983, Leslie met Chuck Rist. Chuck was a popular and fun loving butcher at the Thriftway Store in Damascus. Sentimentally creative, Chuck gave Leslie a heart-shaped steak on Valentine's Day, 1984. They married and were inseparable until Chuck's death in 1989. Leslie considered the "Chuck years" to be the best years of her life. Leslie loved traveling to the Oregon Coast, quilting, reading books and collecting friends. She had hundreds of friends -- hundreds. An active member at Damascus Community Church, Leslie had a strong and loving bond with the Lord. She combined all of her favorite things - the coast, friends and the Lord - when she organized dozens of "Ladies' Retreats" through her church. Her final years were spent traveling to the coast, relaxing in Hawaii, doting on her grandchildren and enjoying the companionship of her close friend, Butch Scheehean. | 47581 | The Oregonian Tuesday, December 2, 2003 Dr. John Washington Bassett (Picture included) Dr. John Washington Bassett died peacefully in the presence of his loving wife, Kitty; son, John; and two daughters, Cindy and Katie on November 27, 2003. The child of two school teachers, Dr. Bassett was born in Pine Bluff, Arkansas, on December 16, 1920. As a young man he received his B.S. from the University of Arkansas in 1942 and later, in 1944, his M.D. from Tulane University. His internship was spent at Philadelphia General Hospital. Dr. Bassett served our country first in 1945-1946 as a general surgeon in the United States Navy and again on the United States Navy Hospital ship Consolation in 1952-1954. Following World War II, he was an instructor of pharmacology and physiology at Tulane University before becoming Assistant Resident Surgeon at Barnes Hospital, Washington University, in St. Louis, Missouri, from 1947-1950. Dr. Bassett earned a Fulbright Scholarship to the University of London, Hammersmith Hospital, from 1950-1951 and then a post as chief Resident Surgeon at the United States Veteran Administration Hospital in Aspinwall, Virginia and the University of Pittsburgh in 1951-1952. In 1952 he was elected a Diplomate of the American Board of Surgery as well as a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons. After marrying his treasured Kitty in 1954, they made their home in Portland. Dr. Bassett began a private practice in surgery which he maintained from 1954-1983. Following retiring from private practice in 1980, Dr. Bassett practiced part time at the Vancouver Clinic in Vancouver, Washington. Dr. Bassett also became an Associate Professor of Clinical Surgery at the University of Oregon and was a member of the Portland Surgical Society, the Oregon Medical Society, the Northwest Proctology Society and the American Medical Association, Phi Beta Kappa, Alpha Omega Alpha, Medical Honor Society and Nu Sigma Nu Medical Fraternity. The successes of Dr. Bassett were far from exclusive to those of his medical accomplishments. We remember him not only for the respect he earned from these but also for the love he poured unconditionally upon all those close to him. The honored title of "doctor" was accompanied by many others which equally defined him; fisherman, huntsman, painter, teacher, scholar, accomplished musician and composer, mentor, gardener, carpenter, prankster, and cherished friend to many. Most of all we remember Dr. Bassett as our unconditionally loving father and extraordinary grandfather. The teachings and special moments with him echo in his eternal laughter. Dr. John W. Bassett is survived by his devoted wife, Katherine; his dear brother, Leonard; son, John W. Bassett, and daughters, Cynthia Bassett Larsen and Katherine Bassett Burke. He welcomed their spouses, Lillian, Robert and James into the family as his own. He also leaves behind eleven grandchildren whom he cherished equally and personally from each birth; James, Raymond, Anna, John, Charlotte, Eva, Eliza, Gwendolyn, John, Amelia and William. A small service was held on November 29 by his close family to honor a fine gentleman and remember his blessed life. Crown Memorial Centers Kathy Kimball Page Bassett (Picture included) May 2, 1941 ? January 13, 2020 Kathy?s passion was to help others. She helped by sewing bridesmaid gowns, flower girl dresses, curtains, pillowcases, slipcovers, jackets, prom dresses, and once robes for all of the men in the family. Do you see a pattern? She didn?t limit her help to fabric. In one day she helped carry 200 planks of wood up a flight of stairs to Patrick?s backyard when he remodeled his home in Seattle. She helped Kelly carry three couches into her first home. She cooked food and help decorate an amazing baby shower for her best friend?s, first great-grandchild. If you needed help, Kathy was there in spades with energy that often lasted longer than the one requesting assistance. L. Kimball Page and Estelle Claire Downey welcomed Kathleen Kimball Page on May 2, 1941 in Portland, Oregon. She grew up the second oldest of six children. She graduated from St. Mary?s Academy and the University of Oregon. Kathy had one of the hardest jobs in education, she was a special education teacher. After retiring from teaching in the public schools she opened a computer training company with her sister Molly called The Page Group. Kathy will be lovingly remembered by her three children from her marriage to John Bassett; son Timothy Bassett and wife Dawn of Phoenix, Arizona; daughter Kelly of Milwaukie, Oregon; son Patrick and wife Kathe of Eugene, Oregon; grandchildren Elizabeth, Bailey, Aidan and Emma. Kathy will be sadly missed by her siblings; Stephanie (Brook) Watts, Molly (Mike) Mikolaitis, sister-in-law Trine Page, Shawna Newell and Kim Page Jr & Javier Navarro. She was predeceased by her brother Jim Page. Kathy will be forever remembered by her seven nephews, five nieces and eighteen grand-nieces and nephews with another on the way. Last January was a tough month for Kathy but as the year progressed her health improved and in July she moved in with her daughter. She was so determined to improve that she would frequently walk the Trolly Trail, or on her treadmill keeping up with the latest political news. She sold her house in November and within the same week found out that she had cancer. Kathy Bassett passed away on January 13, 2020 at the age of 78 after a very short battle with cancer. A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, January 18. Memorial donations may be made in memory of Kathy to the Oregon Education Association Foundation, 6900 SW Atlanta Street, Portland, Oregon 97223.
