Helen Bass Trump, 92, Longtime Osceolan, Dies
Helen Bass Trump was a great one for illustrating a point by characterization as she taught a senior high school history class back in 1937. Helen Bass Trump, 92, of Orlando, a longtime Kissimmee resident, died Wednesday after a long illness. Gwen Murphy, who was a student in that 1937 history class at Osceola High School, said Helen Bass used that method to get and keep the attention of the class. Born in Kissimmee, she was a descendant of one of the earliest families in Osceola County. She graduated from Osceola High School and Florida State College for Women. She was a teacher for 32 years and, in addition to teaching U.S. history and English at Osceola High School, she also taught U.S history at Orlando and Boone high schools, until her retirement in 1956. She became a member of the First United Methodist Church, Kissimmee, in 1908 and remained active in the church until her final illness. At one time she was church organist and choir director and was a choir member for many years. She also served on several boards. The Helen Bass Trump Circle for women was named in her honor. In 1982 she was recognized as the longest active member of the church. Mrs. Trump was named Beta Sigma Phi First Lady of the Year in 1962. She was a member of the Joshua Stevens Chapter, Daughters of the American Revolution, and the Kissimmee Woman's Club. Murphy said she recalls the time when Trump, who married late in life, laughed and told her she had done two things she thought she would never do. ''She said she never thought she would get married and she did. And she thought she would never fly in an airplane and she did,'' Murphy said. She is survived by a nephew, Walter P. Bass, and a niece, Laura Bass Burris, both of Orlando; three great-nieces, two great-nephews, three great-great-nieces and two great-great-nephews. Funeral services will be at 3 p.m. Friday at the First United Methodist Church, Kissimmee. Burial will follow in Rose Hill Cemetery. The family said contributions may be made in her memory to the First United Methodist Church. Grissom Funeral Home in Kissimmee is in charge of arrangements.

William Palmer Bass, 86, Was ?Rensissance Man?

MELBOURNE - William Palmer Bass watched the early glamour days of America's space program unfold from a unique vantage point.

Bass was the highest-ranking civilian manager at the Air Force Eastern Test Range headquartered at Cape Canaveral.

The Melbourne resident, who was responsible for negotiating agreements between the test range and

NASA's missile program in the late 1960s and early 70s, died Tuesday of heart failure. He was 86.

He presided over the Gemini and Apollo manned space missions, and the Polaris, Redstone and Minuteman missile launches.

During Bass' watch, 26,000 people worked at the test range, and the space program launched 200 missiles a year, compared with fewer than 10 launches a year today, said his daughter Apple Bass of Tampa.

''My father left the Air Force after World War II and went to work for the Air Force as a civilian,'' she said. He came to Florida from Wright-Patterson Air Force Base in Ohio in 1950 to help formulate the Eastern Test Range.

Bass, who wanted to build ships as a young man, retired in 1974 and launched his second ''career'' - researching the architecture of the USS Constitution, the world's oldest commissioned ship.

His work produced a model of the famous ship and a book, USS Constitution, Super Frigate of Many Faces, 1802-07.

Launched in 1797 and known as Old Ironsides for its copper hull, the wooden ship outran and outfought British frigates in the War of 1812.

Apple Bass said her father uncovered many facts about the ship's design during his research in the National Archives and various museums.

''He truly was a Renaissance man,'' she said. ''He painted, he wrote he was incredible.''

She said it took her father two years to finish the model of Old Ironsides because he made every piece himself. He also made most of the family's furniture, including ''every bed I ever slept in,'' his daughter said.

Bass is also survived by his wife, Ethel, of Melbourne; a stepson, Thomas Prophet, of Haverhill, Mass.; and a sister, Martha Brandenburgh, of Lexington, Ky.

Maxwell Funeral Home in Melbourne is handling arrangements.

Matriarch of Joe's Stone Crab, a Miami landmark, dies at 94 Matriarch of Miami Beach landmark Joe's Stone Crab, dies at 94
Orlando Sentinel, The (FL) - Tuesday, February 3, 2026
Jo Ann Weiss Sawitz Bass, the matriarch of the landmark Joe's Stone Crab, died Saturday in hospice at her Miami Beach home across the street from her family's restaurant. She was 94.
Bass helped lead Joe's Stone Crab, the oldest surviving restaurant in Miami Beach, for decades and into her late 80s. Joe's predates the incorporation of the city in 1915. That happened two years after Joe's founding. She worked there even before World War II had ended in 1945.
The restaurant has attracted almost every A-lister through the years, including Barbra Streisand, Frank Sinatra, Muhammad Ali, Elizabeth Taylor, FBI director J. Edgar Hoover, and even the actor who played Hoover in a 2011 movie, Leonardo Di Caprio.
Joe's has remained family owned since it was founded in 1913, by Jo Ann Bass' grandfather Joe Weiss who had the brilliant idea to establish an eatery on his Washington Avenue front porch serving fish sandwiches and meat dishes.
That savvy turned to genius when Joe starting serving stone crabs there in 1921, turning his namesake restaurant into a century-old global phenomenon. Joe's Stone Crab is as definable of the Miami Beach essence as the city's distinctive Art Deco along Ocean Drive, its beaches and the Fontainebleau hotel.
Joe's son Jesse ran the restaurant for 60 years after the founder's death in 1930.
But it was Jesse's daughter, Jo Ann, born near the restaurant in Miami Beach on Oct. 18, 1931, who, alongside her son Stephen Sawitz, has led Joe's as its co-owner through its 1990s renaissance, renovations and some of its greatest challenges. Those challenges included Hurricane Andrew in 1992, which interrupted deliveries of stone crabs from a Keys fishery and required cleanup around the grounds -- after Jesse stepped down before his death at 86 in 1994.
"It's in my blood," Bass said of Joe's in a 2012 interview for the Miami Beach Visual Memoirs project. "I love it. The whole place, it's my family, it's my security blanket, it's a new movie every day in the actions of the customers and the people that work there. It's Joe's. It is a wonderful place."
Joe's had to be wonderful. It carries a reputation. Jo Ann, the matriarch, with her attention to detail and her customers' needs, ensured it maintained its appeal to a broad base.
Streisand had played one concert in Miami-Dade as an opening act in March 1963 at Miami Beach's Eden Roc hotel. She was not yet 21.
That was it until 2016. Then, at 74, Streisand returned to Miami to perform a sold-out show at what's now the Kaseya Center, the Heat's arena. One of the first things Streisand told the Miami Herald during an interview to promote the concert was the real reason she was finally returning to Miami.
"You know why?" Streisand teased. "Because they have Joe's Stone Crabs there. I go where the good food is."
The "Funny Girl" Oscar-winner was just five miles away via the MacArthur Causeway after leaving the arena stage to get through Joe's doors. Her promoter had her food ready.
To keep the Streisands, the hungry 9-to-5ers on Friday payday, and the attention-seeking politicians satisfied, Sawitz teamed with his mother to run Joe's.
"You figure out how to do it. That's something that you have to live and that's something you have to do. And I can tell you that mom loved to work, and she loved to play hard. Her playing hard was getting dirty and working the land and planting seeds and cutting the flowers and the vegetables and then taking them and cooking something. She was remarkable, because she was so simple and ordinary, I guess. And that makes her extraordinary," her son said.
Bass was 13 in the mid-1940s when she started her first full-time job, inside the family restaurant during the waning year of World War II. She was there through her graduation from Miami Beach High in 1949. Making salads. Working the dessert station. Managing the books. Meeting customers on the floor. Staying through her marriages to Irwin Sawitz -- the father of her two children, son Sawitz and daughter Jodi Hershey -- and Miami Beach physician Dr. Robert Bass.
She took one 10-year "sabbatical" to raise her two children but returned to work at Joe's, and to co-own it with her son, until 2019 when she was around 88, just before the following year's COVID pandemic.
There were educational detours but no degrees from the University of Miami, where she enrolled after Beach High. She returned to Joe's at her parent's request. Later, in her 60s, she took enrichment classes at Barry University in Miami Shores near one of her homes. Bass also had a seasonal home in North Carolina.
But there was always her primary home, and it wasn't in Miami Shores or North Carolina or even the one she lived in across the street from the restaurant until the end of her life.
"I went straight from my birth at the hospital to the second floor of Joe's," Bass said in the Miami Beach memoir. "There was an apartment up there, a two-family apartment. My grandparents lived at one end, my mother and dad lived at the other."
Bass, despite never completing higher education, was an avid reader, and sharp. Miami native and U.S. Attorney General Janet Reno was one of her friends and member of a shared book club.
Bass privately donated to dozens of charitable causes, including Miami Rescue Mission, Mount Sinai Medical Center, Urban Construction and Craft Academy, the Miami Dade Public Schools Foundation and many more, her son said.
"People would be stunned by the extent of her philanthropy -- mostly because she never wanted anyone to know. That's the type of woman she was."
Bass' survivors include her son Stephen Sawitz and daughter Jodi Hershey; granddaughters Julia Sawitz, Jessica Uchuya, Lauren Walton; grandson Blayke Kogan and great-granddaughters Alexandra Uchuya and Iyana Walton.
Services will be 10 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 4, at Temple Beth Sholom, 4144 Chase Ave., Miami Beach. Her family says that donations in Bass's memory can be made to Urban Construction and Craft Academy, Miami Rescue Mission and Mount Sinai Medical Center.

Dr. Charlie Gibson Bassett

Dr. Charlie Gibson Bassett, aged seventy-six, for over forty years a
practicing dentist in Otsego and Delaware counties, passed away at the Mary
Imogene Bassett Hospital early Saturday morning after a brief illness of
pneumonia.
Dr. Bassett was born in Morris, July 27, 1861, the son of Dr. Lyman
DeWilton and Amanda (Gibson) Bassett. He attended the Morris schools and was
graduated from the New York College of Dentistry in 1890. Following
graduation, he started practice in Sidney where he was located for thir
years. During this period he also maintained an office in Franklin. In 1923 he
moved to Cherry Valley where he practiced his profession until his retirement
in October, 1935, after which he and Mrs. Bassett came to Cooperstown a
maintained their residence at the Clara Welch Thanksgiving hom
Dr. Bassett married Miss Anna Louise Heckel of Cobleskill on June 10,
1891, who survived together with an only son, Dr. Lyman DeWilton Bassett of
Cobleskill.
Dr. Bassett was a devout Christian and his interests centered in the
church and Masonic organizations. During his residence in Sidney he w
vestryman of St. Paul’s church and in Cherry Valley, a vestryman of Gra
Episcopal church. One of his most cherished possessions was a framed
expression from his fellow workers in the Cherry Valley church electing him
an honorary vestryman, on his removal to Cooperstown. It was the only such
designation existing in the Albany diocese of the Episcopal church, taking the
form of a resolution adopted by the parish offices given “in appreciation of
the unflagging interest which Dr. Bassett had always taken in the welfare and
temporal concern of his church, and his loyalty and devotion to his spiritual
well-being and his constant effort to advance and promote its influence among
his fellow-workers, and the congregation and community in general.
Dr. Bassett on coming to Cooperstown, became a member of Christ church
and of Otsego Lodge, Chapter and Commandery, Knights Templar, and al
Ziyara Temple of the Mystic Shrine in Utica.
Dr. Bassett always had a keen interest in horses and one of his
favorite pastimes was a canter on his own mount.
The funeral was held Monday afternoon from Christ church with t
rector, the Rev. Jackson L. Cole, officiating. Interment was made in the
family plot in Cobleskill cemetery. Officers of Otsego Commandery, Knights
Templar, had charge of a Masonic service Sunday evening at the Brown and
Tillapaugh Funeral home. The ritual was conducted by Lloyd A. Thompson,
commander, and the Rev. Charles Kramer, Carl J. Pierce, and Monroe F. Augur.
In the death of Dr. Bassett a wide circle of friends and former
clients will experience a keen personal loss.
The simple story of Dr. Bassett’s life, his devotion to the things he
loved, his family, his profession, his Lodge, his church – what better things
can a man love than these? – is in itself an obituary to complete that the
briefest comment seems an intrusion. But no one who had like the writer, known
him professionally and personally for forty years could let farewell be said
without mention of the rare quality which endeared him to old friends and new
and charmed even the passing stranger – his childlike gaiety. Dr. Bassett met,
in his long life, as all men must, joy and sorrow, anxiety, disappointment,
physical suffering, and he met them with a spirit so happily undaunted that,
to the very end, he always had an abundance of cheer to share with others.
“Dr. Bassett was a lovely person,” said a new acquaintance, “he was always so
gay.”

The Hon. Delos E. Bass

Many throughout the county of Otsego and particularly in Oneonta, will learn with deep regret of the death of the Hon. Delos E. Bass, which occurred on Friday of last week at the home of his daughter, Mrs. W.R. Fitch of West Winfield. The funeral was held at the Fitch residence, and interment was in the cemetery at Unadilla Forks. A correspondent of the Utica Press gives the following account of his life and worthy tribute to his memory:
?Hon. Delos E. Bass of Plainfield was born in Edmeston, May 20, 1840. He improved such school facilities as were within his reach and early learned to work under the direction of his father, proving an apt pupil in whatever he undertook. He lived on the same farm since 1858. He married Miss Nettie Huntley of Exeter, November 25, 1866. She survives with the following children: Mrs. Flora B. Swan, Mt. Vernon; Mrs. Grace Williams and Mrs. Maud Fitch of West Winfield; Lyle D. Bass of Edmeston and Bruce Garfield Bass, of Plainfield.?
?Mr. Bass was quite active and prominent in public affairs, being a man of energy and influence not only in his community but throughout Otsego county, where he was well and favorably known. He served the town of Plainfield two terms acceptably as supervisor. He was an assessor of the town for many years. He was in the state legislature as member of the assembly in 1905 and 1906 and there established a reputation for honesty, faithfulness and attentivesness to his duty whicfh was thoroughly creditable. That he was well and highly thought of by the people of his immediate locaility could be proven in no better way than the statement that continuously for the last 20 years he had been a justice of the peace. The deceased was a member of the Baptist church at Unadilla Forks and was superintendent of tis Sunday school for a long time. Mr. Bass was a man who was kindly, courteous and progressive, possessing in generous degree those attributes and characteristics which make a man personally popular. Thoroughly honorable and upright, and well informed, he was a welcome guest and an agreeable companion. Few farmers in this section were better known and he will be much missed by a large circle of friends and acquaintenances.?

Audrey Caryi (nee Scott) (Picture included)

Audrey passed from this life on April 5, 2017 as a consequence of a riding accident, age 67.

Born in Manotick to the late Gordon and Myrtle (Bassett) Scott, Audrey attended Fisher Park High and then the Ontario College of Art, Toronto, graduating her program with honours.

Audrey met the love of her life, John Caryi, and in the summer of 1970 they eloped to the remote mountain town of Taman, Mexico. They moved to Dartford, in the rolling hills of Northumberland County, and there they welcomed their precious daughter,Tania.

Audrey supported John through his many years with MS until his passing in 2010.

Her passion for art and history led her to become a exhibit artist and museum specialist at Lang Pioneer Village Museum, Peterborough County, where she marked 34 years in February.

Her beloved horse Dixie Dale, age 33, died in 1995 in the field where she grazed in Dartford and a few years later, in that same meadow, her daughter Tania exchanged marriage vows with Cody Storry.

Among Audrey's other passions was travel with friends and family. All destinations and invitations were met with excitement, and a packed bag. She explored the world, touching on 4 continents.

Audrey was an enthusiastic community supporter and volunteer on Warkworth and area cultural boards and festivals, some of her own creation.

Audrey was the very proud Nana to Finley, Jude and Rhonan.

She is also survived by her aging equine friend Seleena, feline companion Poppy, her sister-in-law Pat (Tony Clementi) of Halifax, and her big sister Linda (Bill Gloss) in Ottawa as well as many very dear friends and neighbours who mourn her loss.

A life of giving to others included her generous organ donation on the day of her passing, through the Trillium Gift of Life program.

A celebration of her life, its beautiful energy and distinctive laugh, will be held at the Lang Pioneer Village Museum on May 20th, 11:00 am. You are invited to join her family on that day.
