| 47907 | The Post-Standard, Syracuse, New York, Tuesday, 6 January 2026 Emily Bass Emily (Hauser) Bass (74) passed away on December 15, 2025, at Crouse Hospital in Syracuse, New York, after a 3-year battle with lung and breast cancer. She was predeceased by her parents, Elisabeth (Reens) and Milton Hauser. Emily is survived by her beloved husband Walden Bass, her brother Randolph Hauser, her daughters Rachel Bass and Amanda (Bass) Zubek, son-in-law Richard Zubek, and her grandchildren Henry and Amelia Zubek. Born in New York City in 1951, Emily's family moved shortly thereafter to Scotch Plains, New Jersey, where she spent her childhood. She received her Bachelor's in music pedagogy from the Hartt School of Music at the University of Hartford in 1973. She attended graduate school for piano at Syracuse University, where she met Walden in 1974. The two fell in love while playing Bach two-part inventions, and eloped in July 1975. Emily had a long, fulfilling music career as a piano teacher to multitudes of children and adult students, and as a skilled accompanist for several Suzuki violin studios and private instructors, as well as the Edward Smith Elementary School's Notable Singers. Emily's incredible ear and sensitive playing brought out the best performances in young musicians of all skill levels. In 2013, she began working for Symphora (now the Syracuse Orchestra), where she was the "box office queen" for ten years. She also served as board president of Schola Cantorum of Syracuse for two decades. In all of these roles, Emily helped shape the minds and hearts of countless people, spreading the joy of making music and enriching the arts across Central New York. Emily was an avid lover of fiber arts and painstakingly crafted many beautiful needlepoint pillows that decorate her and her children's homes. She was also known for her incredible cooking (especially soup), home decorating, and funky jewelry. She loved her dogs, Grungy, Oscar, and Britty; collecting antique furniture and decor; eating Thai and Vietnamese food; and reading mystery novels. Emily focused on her family as her reason for fighting through her cancer treatments and health complications. She was a cheerleader for her children and grandchildren in all things, but especially music. Her goal was to reach 50 years of marriage with Walden. Happily, they celebrated their golden anniversary in 2025 and have many happy memories of their life together. Emily was always the "cool mom", easily connecting with children and teens with her wry sense of humor, quick and irreverent wit, and infectious laugh. She will be missed by many. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made in Emily's memory to the Syracuse Sounds of Music Association (www.syracusesoundsofmusic.org) or the Syracuse Orchestra (syracuseorchestra.org). A celebration of Emily's life will be held on June 20, 2026, in Syracuse, location to be determined. Condolences can be offered at www.hollisfuneralhome.com. | Hauser, Emily (I8462)

| 47915 | The Post-Star, New York, January 2, 2021 H. Ronald Bessette WHITEHALL - H. Ronald Bessette went to be with our lord and savior on December 30, 2020. Ron was the first-born son of the late Henry L. and Edna M. (Lindsay) Bessette. Ron was married to Janice (Romeo) Bessette, together they have spent the last 50 years with each other. In his early years Ron was employed by the D&H Railroad, but his love and passion were restoring old cars most of his life. He was what many called the back-yard mechanic. He had a special talent of being able to turn an old rust bucket into a beautiful show car. He did many throughout his years, but his favorites were 1949-1950 Ford and Mercury's. He was the founder of the Skenesborough Street Rodders in the late 1980's, where the club did some fund raising and car shows. He was very proud of that time. Ron had a love of talking with everyone he met. We always said he had the gift to gab. His second passion was camping with his wife and family since 1970. He and his wife Janice managed the Port Henry Campsite in Port Henry from 1990-1996, where they made many friends and considered family, where many memories were made. Besides his parents, Ron was predeceased by his brother Gary Bessette. He is survived by his wife Janice; his children: son Marc Bessette of Whitehall; daughter Renee (Chuck) Lobdel of Troy; son Chad (Roxy) Marcy of North Pole, AK; daughter Debby Cline of Whitehall; son Ron (Tara) Bessette, of NC, son Gary Bessette of Granville, and son Terry (Linda)Bessette of Whitehall. | 47932 | The Progress, Shreveport, Caddo Parish, Louisiana, 1 July 1893 Judge T.T. Land Passes Away Full of Years and Honored By All Who Knew Him. It was with profound regret that we learned Tuesday morning that Judge T. T. Land had passed away; that a long and useful life had come to an end; that one of Shreveport's oldest citizens at the ripe age of 78 years had been gathered in by the Great Reaper. Judge Land was a native of Tennessee. He was born December 15, 1815. He graduated at the University of Virginia. Married Miss Mary Dillingham of Mississippi in 1835; fourteen children were born to them, of which seven are living. He came to this city in 1846 a practitioner of law. He attained the highest honors of his profession, being at one time associate justice on the Supreme Bench. Judge Land's high legal attainments caused the office to seek the man. He was never a politician in any sense of the word. Was one of twenty-one that revised and gfave us our present constitution in 1878. Like a mighty oak, he has fallen. Like the old land mark he has passed away, but his honorable career will lie on after him. The honorable representatives left behind to emulate his example are Hon. A. D. Land, D. T. Land, Hon. John R. Land, Charles A. Land, Mrs. Leon Jastremski of New Orleans, Mrs. George A. Wilson of Lexington, Miss., Mrs. Hames H. Hollingsworth of Kosciusko, Miss. To his aged widow and surviving children words of consolation are of not avail. Time is the great healer; we must humbly submit to the decrees of Him who rules over and above all. In the death of Judge Land you have lost a noble husband and father, the State and parish an honored citizen. Biographical and Historical Memoirs of Northwest Louisiana Judge Thomas Thompson Land, ex-associate justice of the Supreme Court of Louisiana, was born in Rutherford county, Tenn., December 7, 1815, and is the oldest son of Charles Land and Sarah Bass. His father, who was a planter, was a native of South Carolina, and his mother, who was the daughter of a planter, was a native of North Carolina. Judge Land received his education at the University of Virginia and also attended the law school there. On September 25, 1839, Judge Land married Miss Mary E. Dillingham, of Washington county, Miss. Mrs. Land, who is a lady of great culture and refinement, is still living. Among her distinguished relatives are numbered the late Governor Runnels and the late Governor Humphreys, of Mississippi. In the first year of his marriage Judge Land was elected a member of the Mississippi legislature from Holmes county, and was reelected at the expiration of his term. At the end of his four years' service in the Mississippi legislature, he declined a nomination for the state senate, tendered to him by the whig party, of which he was a member. In November, 1845, Judge Land emigrated from Mississippi, and after visiting and prospecting for some months in Texas, before the admission of that state into the Union, he returned in 1848 to Shreveport, La., where he established his permanent domicile and commenced the practice of law. In 1854 he was elected judge of the judicial district composed of the parishes of Caddo, De Soto and Bossier, to fill the vacancy occasioned by the election of Judge Henry K. Spofford associate justice of the Supreme Court of the state. At the end of his term, Judge Land declined a reelection. In 1858 Judge Land was elected associate justice of the Supreme Court of Louisiana to fill the unexpired term of Judge Henry M. Spofford, who had resigned. After his election to the supreme bench, Judge Land purchased a home in the city of New Orleans, and resided there with his family until the second year of the war. In 1881 Judge Land was reelected associate justice of the Supreme Court without any opposition for the full term of ten years, and remained on the bench until the end of the war in 1865. He then resumed the practice of law at his domicile in the city of Shreveport, where he had taken refuge after the fall of the city of New Orleans in 1862. In 1879 he was elected a delegate to the constitutional convention, and was appointed chairman of the judiciary committee, which was composed of twenty-one able and experienced lawyers, to whose painstaking labors the people of Louisiana are indebted for their present judiciary system. The union of Judge and Mrs. Land was blessed with fourteen children. Seven children and eighteen grandchildren are still living. Three sons--Alfred D., David T. and John B. Land--reside in Shreveport, and follow their father in the profession of the law. The fourth son, Charles A. Land, is a planter, residing in Caddo parish. The three daughters are married; the eldest, Sallie, to General Leon Jastremski, of New Orleans; the second, Maggie May, to the Hon. George A. Wilson, of Lexington, Miss.; and the third, Carrie, to Col. James K. Hollingsworth, of Kosciusko, Miss. In 1884 Judge Land retired from the practice of the law, his two younger sons succeeding him in the law firm of Land & Land. | Land, Judge Thomas Thompson (I6460)
