In Memoriam

Deacon George Hood died at his residence in Hartsville, Steuben County, New York, July 19, 1886, of a complication of diseases, from which he had been a severe but patient sufferer for many months.
He was born October 25, 1820, and when but a boy gave his heart and life to Christ, and united with the M.E. Church. In 1845, he was married, by Eld. Henry Green, to Avis A. Potter, daughter of Elisha Potter, of Hartsville. Having become convinced that immersion was Bible baptism, and that the seventh-day was the Bible Sabbath, in 1848, true to his convictions, he was baptized into the fellowship of the Hartsville Seventh-da Baptist Church, of which he remained a trusted, faithful and much-beloved member, until he was transferred to membership in the church triumphant. He served the church as clerk for about 26 years, and as deacon for more than 30 years, having been ordained to that office in 1855.
Faithfulness to duty was a fixed principle and life-long habit with Deacon Hood. He was not a man of many words, not largely demonstrative in his social and religious life, but his counsels were always safe, his words always right and kind. A vein of genial humor ran through his social intercourse, which made him always companionable and at home in the society of both old and young.,
The family, the church, the whole community cannot but feel the loss when such a man goes out from his place, so faithfully filled among them. The estimation in which he was held in his own, and surrounding neighborhoods was evinced by the crowded church on the day of his funeral. The services were conducted by D.E. Maxson, pastor of the Hartsville Church, assisted by Elds. Titsworth and Summerbell, pastors of the 1st and 2d Alfred Churches. Text of sermon, Rev. 14:13. D.E. Maxson

Mrs. Fanny Potter

In Hartsville, N.Y., Feb. 9th, 1867, of paralysis, Mrs. Fanny Potter, in the 77th year of her age. The subject of this notice was a most estimable woman in all the relations of life. She was a worthy member of the Seventh-day Baptist Church of Hartsville.

Died

In Independence, N.Y. Jan. 30th, 1873, Martha St. Johns, relict of the late John C. Bassett, age 74 years, 4 months and 2 days. Nearly a year before, she had a slight shock of paralysis, but soon recovered, and spent most of the Summer and Fall visiting her children and friends East. She returned home a few weeks ago in apparently good health, and continued so up to the day on which she died. She was in her chair conversing with a daughter, who was visiting her, when she suddenly ceased speaking, and in a few minutes became unconscious, and died in about eight hours, without a struggle. She leaves nine living children, all married, all of whom were preset at her funeral, excepting the youngest, who was detained at her home in a distant State, by sickness in her family. Sister Bassett was one of the constituent members of the Seventh-day Baptist Church of Independence, and one of its brightest lights, always, when able, in her place in the house of God. Sister Bassett will long be remembered for her sterling Christian integrity, her generous hospitality and her bountiful charity, which made her a wise and faithful counselor, and agreeable and loved friend, and a free and unostentatious almoner. The public appreciation of her rare virtues was manifest in the attendance of people from all the surrounding sections of the country at her funeral, which was made the occasion of a faithful sermon by her pastor, from Matt. 25: 10: ?And they that were ready, went in with him to the marriage: and the door was shut,? in which he encouraged Christians to faithfulness, and warned the unconverted to make immediate preparation for admission to the heavenly kingdom, ?for ye know neither the day nor the hour wherein the Son of Man cometh.?

Jana Lee Bassett, November 30, 2021

Elk Grove, California - It happened every time my family went to the movies. My mother, Jana Lee Bassett, would discreetly take out the can of Coke and paper cups stashed in her purse. Then CRACK! The sound of the soda being popped open would whoosh through what always seemed to be the quietest moment of the film. This smuggling operation can be revealed now because unfortunately Jana died on November 30, 2021, in Elk Grove at age 76, following a stroke several months earlier.
Jana was born and raised in California with her sisters by her parents Floyd and Sybil May. She was in the first graduating class from Bella Vista High School in Fair Oaks. Jana graduated from CSU Sacramento, where she was president of the Alpha Xi Delta sorority. She met Robert Bassett there, who would become her husband for more than 20 years before they divorced. Jana had two children?Lori, who died in 2007, and Kaye. With her husband Khalil Cox, Kaye provided Jana with two grandchildren?Audrey and Theo.
Jana's first career was as a reporter for the Sacramento Bee. Then she was a devoted homemaker who was always there for her kids. She instilled a love of the performing arts with frequent trips to the Music Circus, Ice Capades, and of course movie theaters. Jana regularly volunteered at her kids' school, which was still fondly remembered decades later by one of Kaye's classmates. Jana was an avid reader who worked at the Belle Cooledge Library after her kids were grown. She maintained a subscription to the Sacramento Bee and often sent newspaper clippings of helpful or interesting articles to family and friends. Jana continued writing by routinely mailing cards and letters, even corresponding with a pen pal from Australia since she was in grade school.
Jana also loved animals. She took especially good care of the family's pet turtle Pokey. Jana would donate money to the World Wildlife Fund and the Save the Manatee Club as well as write letters in support of protective legislation.
Following her wishes, Jana will be cremated and interred near Lori at East Lawn Greenback. No services are scheduled, but Jana's life left an impression on those who knew her.

Barbara Bass, March 2, 2021

Rocklin, California - Barbara Jean Bass died from congestive heart failure at the age of 84. She was born on International Women's Day?an auspicious beginning for the smart, sassy woman she would become. Her quick wit, unshakeable integrity, sharp sense of humor, and generous spirit endeared her to all who knew her.
Barbara was a skilled poker player, trap shooter, bowler, apple-sauce maker, knitter, and avid sports fan. Her work ethic was legendary?at a time in life when many settle into retirement, she began a career as a bank teller, a job that lasted for more than 20 years.
She was the matriarch of her family. She was described as "the best," "a force of nature," and "my whole world." When asked how she saw herself, Barbara replied, "I'm the supervisor." She was an unwavering presence in her family's lives: funny and wise and respected and adored. She leaves behind her children Sandra and Ronald; her 5 grandchildren & 2 great grand children; and her brother Donald. She is reunited with her beloved husband Clifton and her son, Robert. R.C. ?Bob? McClymonds (1923-2017)

R. C. "Bob" McClymonds passed peacefully from this world to be with Our Heavenly Father on March 4. Bob was born in College Springs, Iowa, on November 10, 1923 to William and Mary McClymonds. His early childhood was spent in College Springs and Clarinda, Iowa. At the age of 8, Bob moved west with his family to Tulelake, CA, and became part of that region's first homesteading community. He grew up on the family homestead, attended a one-room Homesteader's elementary school, and he sold magazine subscriptions to help the family and to finance his own subscription to National Geographic Magazine, which allowed him to dream of far-away places filled with adventure. Bob later graduated from Tulelake High School where he was the student body president his senior year. Along with his best friend, Neale Welsch, Bob attended Sacramento Junior College until 1942, when Bob enlisted in the United States Navy. After completing his midshipman's training in Chicago, Los Angeles, and San Diego, Bob served in the Pacific theater as a Lieutenant JG Torpedo Officer on the destroyer USS Caldweld DD 605. Bob's service took him from the sandy beaches of Hawaii, to the Philippines, through a typhoon off the coast of Okinawa, and up to the gates of the Imperial Palace in Tokyo, Japan as part of the occupation force. After the war ended, Bob was delighted that his ship returned to Boston by way of the Panama Canal. Upon returning home, Bob completed his college education at USC, where he earned a degree in Political Science and was honored with membership in the Skull and Dagger Society for his work as President of the Greater University Committee. Bob then returned to farming with his father until he met the love of his life, Margaret "Peggy" Bassett, of Reno, NV. Bob and Peggy were married in July 1953. The newlywed couple homesteaded in Rupert, ID for several years, living in a two-room block homestead house they built themselves that was an extension of the tractor shed. Love and a pot-bellied stove kept them warm, but the trips to the outhouse were a bit frosty. Happily for their children, who appreciated indoor plumbing, Bob and Peggy later moved to Carmichael, CA where they raised their family. Bob was a Real Estate Broker and Appraiser in the Sacramento area, working well into his 70's. He and Peggy were gratified to see their four children all graduate college, establish their own careers and households, and claim each other as their best friends. After Peggy's death in 2007, Bob continued to enjoy his friends at La Bou, his neighbors, and his children and grandchildren. During the last years of his life, Bob was cared for by his children. He enjoyed each day, appreciated every act of kindness, and never lost his sense of wonder or his sense of humor. He was fond of saying that "Everyday is a victory when we help others, and when we learn something new. Onward and upward. Each day is a victory." Bob is survived by his four children: Mary McClymonds Hargrove (husband Phillip) of Millington, TN; Susan McClymonds of Pasadena, CA; Robert McClymonds of Sierra Valley, CA; and William McClymonds of Yuba City, CA. He is also survived by five grandchildren: William Hirsch of Millington, TN; Timothy and Daniel Martinez of Pasadena, CA; Jon and Bailey McClymonds of Yuba City, CA. Services will be held on Saturday, March 18, 2017 at 2:30 pm at: Living Hope Community Church, 5301 Dewey Dr. Fair Oaks, CA. An opportunity to express your condolences to the family along with signing the memorial guest register is available online at www.fehrmanmortuary.

Byron Eugene ?Gene? Bassett (Picture included)

Byron Eugene "Gene" Bassett died December 31, 2013 of pneumonia resulting from a massive stroke on July 23, 2014. Gene was born July 6, 1938 in Turlock, to Byron and Dorothy (Gay) Bassett.

His parents divorced when Gene was four and he was raised by his grandparents until his father married Margaret (Campbell) when he was seven. He attended Tracy High School, Modesto Junior College and one year at the College of the Pacific (now University of the Pacific) in the pharmacy program before being accepted to the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, NY. Graduating from West Point in the Class of 1963, Gene started his 20-year military career in Artillery with Jump School at Ft. Benning and Basic at Ft. Sill before a three year tour in Germany. Switching to Signal Corps, he spent 1968 in Vietnam followed by a short time at Ft. Lewis WA before going to John's Hopkins University where he earned an MS in Chemistry in 1969. He returned to West Point as a chemistry instructor followed by three years in Korea. His latter tours were at Ft. Hood, TX, Ft. Lee, VA and Alexandria, VA at the U.S. Army Military Personnel Center.

He married Linda (Madden) in June 1963, following graduation; they had two sons while in Germany, a daughter while at John's Hopkins and adopted a daughter while in Korea. Divorced in 1979, Gene met Ginger (Dorwart) in September 1982; they were married December 4, 1982, in Alexandria, VA. A year later, Gene retired from the Army and he and Ginger moved to Monterey County where she worked for the Department of Defense (DMDC) and Gene was VP for a multi-level business. He later owned and operated Pet Paradise in Monterey for several years and subsequently had a Farmers Insurance business in Monterey and Seaside.

Gene was proud to have his father, father-in-law and DeMoley Chapter Dad present at his initiation into Masonry in 1992 at Mt. Oso Lodge in Tracy (his father's lodge). He was raised to Master Mason in Carmel Lodge later that year and Masonry became a large part of his life. He went on to serve Carmel Lodge as Master in 1996 and again in 1997 and wore with pride the Hiram Award presented to him by his lodge in 1999. Greatly moved during a half-time presentation by the Shriners' Hospital at an East-West football game, Gene was proud to become a Shriner. He entertained thousands as 'Lil Barney' the clown in many city parades, Kids Fests, Cancer Survivor Days and private parties. One of his favorite activities as a Shriner was transporting children and their parents to and from medical appointments at the Shriners Hospital in Sacramento. For the 19 trips he made in 2012, he was awarded the Shriner of the Year award by the Monterey County Shrine Club, an honor of which he was very proud. He was appointed by Grand Lodge as Ambassador to Fraternal Support Services in 2005 and was a member of the Public Schools Advisory Council. He served as Inspector of the 357th Masonic District from 2005 until his stroke. He was a member of the Knight's Commander Court of Honor, a 32nd degree Mason of the Scottish Rite in San Jose. As a member of the National Sojourners and Heroes of 76, he enjoyed participating in flag presentations. Additionally, Gene was active with the Order of the Eastern Star. As a Past Patron of Carmel Chapter, he served Grand Chapter on many committees and enjoyed singing with the Grand Choir.

Gene's Christian faith was always an important part of his life. While at West Point he was a Sunday school teacher to children attending the post church and continued to teach at subsequent assignments and after retirement. While in Korea, he especially enjoyed teaching an English language Sunday school class for college students and working with Billy Kim, a Korean evangelist. One of his favorite experiences with Mr. Kim was the hosting of Billy Graham in 1973. Since 1997, Gene was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Salinas where he sang in the choir, served on numerous committees and worked in the Neighborhood Program, a program assisting the homeless. Along with his Christian faith was a love of Christian music. He sang in choirs throughout his life, including the Cadet Choir at West Point, and loved the friends he made through his music.

In addition to his Christian and Masonic activities, Gene was on the Board for Goodwill Industries of Santa Cruz, Monterey and San Luis Obispo Counties from 2005 thru 2012, serving as its Chairman in 2011. He was a Past President of Rotary in Seaside and served on the 2011 Civil Grand Jury in Monterey County.

Gene is survived by his wife, Ginger; sons, Byron (Dana) Bassett of Richburg, SC, David (Jolanthe) Bassett of Rochester Hills, MI; daughters, Becky (Eric) Robinson of Lambertville, MI and Susan Warner of Florida; brothers, Don (Sandy) Bassett of Auburn and Bill Sperry of Parma, ID; and sisters, Linda (Bill) Smith of Tracy, and Gay Sperry of Riverbank; and his mother, Margaret Bassett of Tracy. He is also survived by eight granddaughters as well as eight nieces and nephews. In talking of Gene with his widow, friends often reference him as a gentle man with a big smile. He is greatly missed by his family and friends but we all know he is 'singing with the angels' now.

A Memorial service will be held Sunday, February 9, 2014 at 2:00 p.m., at First United Methodist Church, 404 Lincoln Ave., Salinas, CA 93901.

Karen Suzette Bass

Karen Suzette "Suzie" Bass, born on Oct. 29, 1970, left this world on May 26, 2024. Suzie was a beacon of light for all who knew her, dedicating life to caring for children through her home childcare service. Her nurturing spirit created bonds that transcended mere caretaking; the children she looked after became an extension of her own family, a testament to the depth of her love and compassion. Suzie's unwavering commitment to serving others earned her the title of a true "Giver." Her selflessness and dedication were evident in every aspect of her life. Beyond her professional endeavors, Suzie found joy in simple pleasures like rooting for the Dallas Cowboys during their games and embarking on travel adventures to destinations like Arizona to visit her beloved son Sterlyn, Las Vegas, and to Texas to visit her family.

Family was at the core of Suzie's being, and she treasured every moment spent with them.

Her husband, Jimmie Ray Bass; son Robert Gately; and sister Donna Daniel precede her in death.

Cherishing her memory are Sterlyn Gately from Phoenix, Ariz.; daughter, Sarah Hudson and son-inlaw Brad from Benton; grandchildren Ayla, Bryie, Blakely, Jesse, Maggie, Kasen, Audrey, and Maisy; mother Charlotte James from Dallas, Texas; father John Melton Sr. and stepmother Bernice from Eustice, Texas; brother John Melton Jr. from Dallas; sister Diane Melton from Dallas; along with numerous other family members and friends who held a special place in Suzie's heart.

A visitation and memorial service in honor of Suzie will be held at Smith Family Funeral Home in Benton on Friday, June 7. The visitation will commence at 2 p.m., followed by the memorial service starting at 2:30 p.m. as we gather to celebrate the life of a remarkable woman who touched the hearts of many. Although Suzie may no longer walk among us, her legacy of love and kindness will continue to inspire all those who were fortunate enough to have known her. She will be deeply missed but forever remembered for the warmth she brought into the lives she touched. Services entrusted to Smith-Benton Funeral Home.
