Mary Ellen Bass Caines

SANFORD ? Mary Ellen "Dicki" Bass Caines, 83, went to be with the Lord on Tuesday (05/04/21).

Born in Fayetteville on March 30, 1938, she was the daughter of Ertha Anderson Bass and Euna Earle Upchurch Williams, who preceded her in death. She was the stepdaughter of the late Sherwood Williams.

Dicki was a 1956 graduate of Dunn High School. She then started a life filled with travel, work and lots of love. In the early years, she worked in the administration office at East Carolina University and as a bank teller in Carolina Beach and Raleigh.

While dancing one night at Williams Lake, she met the Gene Austin Caines. They were married on a snowy January 29 in 1961 and remained together until Gene's untimely death May 4, 1990. Their married years took them to Colorado Springs, Colorado, Fayetteville, Salisbury, Richmond, Virginia, Columbia, South Carolina, and finally Sanford. They welcomed their son Gregory Austin Caines in 1967 and daughter Megan Dee-El Caines in 1971.

In Sanford, Dicki worked at Carolina Sporting Goods and various beauty salons as a receptionist. In 1983, she became a certified color analyst and started her business "ColorMagic." In the mid-90s, she moved to Cherry Grove, South Carolina. Her love of people, bright smile and flair for fashion were best witnessed through her years as a hostess around North Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, at Chase's Place, Duffy Street, The Surf Golf and Beach Club and Bonefish Grill.

She is survived by her son Greg (Janice) of Lexington, South Carolina, and daughter Dee-El of Sanford; favorite grandson Hunter Cloninger and the blessing of beautiful granddaughters, Mary Chapman Caines, Adair, Grace and Anna Claire Day; sister Linda Williams McPhail (Gus) of Hope Mills; sisters-in-law Nelda Caines Lane (Carmen) of Candor and Velda Caines Ledbetter of Myrtle Beach, South Carolina; and many special nieces and nephews. She will be missed by many who have called her Mrs. Dicki and Gigi over the years.

Dicki was inducted into the Shagger's Hall of Fame in February 2016, was a member of the Wolfpack Club for more than 45 years and served on the board of Tilghman Lakes By the Sea. She taught Sunday school and was a member of First Baptist Church in Sanford. She later moved her membership to St. Luke UMC in Sanford.

Over the years, she played a lot of bridge and tennis with friends; planted, grew and enjoyed her flowers; cheered for N.C. State Wolfpack; walked on the beach and found sharks teeth with her grandchildren; sat on the porch reading books; traveled to many amazing places; and picked up seashells by the seashore.

The funeral service is 2:30 p.m. Monday at St. Luke United Methodist Church with burial to follow at Buffalo Cemetery. Family will receive friends from 12:30-2 p.m. in the church parlor.

"It is a good thing to give thanks." Psalm 92:1

William Tyler Hinckley Sr. (1926 ? 2018) (Picture included)

GREENFIELD CENTER - William Tyler Hinckley Sr., 92, left this earth to join his Lord and Savior in heaven on December 22, 2018. William (Bill) was married to Florence Bassett Hinckley for 69 years. She was the love of his life, his companion and the mother of his 7 children. Together they journeyed through all of the ups and downs that life gave them and set an example of faithfulness to God and the importance of family that all of their children have embraced. They were known for their prayers and for always holding hands, including up to the moment when God called Bill home. Bill, born on December 19, 1926, to Kenneth and Alice (Tyler) Hinckley, spent his entire life in Saratoga Springs and Greenfield Center. His employment history included bookkeeping/office manager for Stewart?s Ice Cream Co. and Wells Pharmacy. Bill, when a father of five and in his thirties, enrolled at SUNY Albany because he thought he should set an example for his children to follow. He earned his teaching degree and taught Math, English and 6th grade for a total of 24 years in the Saratoga Springs City School District (School #4, the Junior High School and Geyser Road Elementary). In addition to teaching, Bill was a founding member of the Saratoga Teachers Federal Credit Union and worked as its treasurer for 15 years. Faith was extremely important to Bill. He had been a lifelong active member of both the Saratoga Springs and Ballston Spa First Baptist Churches, serving as a deacon, elder, Sunday School teacher and choir member. He has served as a Gideon and shared his love for the Lord with many people. One of his favorite Bible verses is Joshua 24:15: ?As for me and my house, we will serve the Lord?. Bill loved woodworking of all types. He spent many hours in his workshop lovingly hand crafting gifts for family members. Bill fully renovated the family farmhouse then constructed his own house on the property they called ?The Woodlot? in Greenfield Center. He was also known for his love of planes, popcorn, production of maple syrup, travelling, and mastery of the English language. Bill liked to write humorous poetry, letters and stories, some of which are found in the memoir he wrote called ?Bird Droppings?. Music had an important place in Bill?s life. He enjoyed singing and playing the trumpet and while in high school was invited to join the Skidmore College Symphony, which he did. As an adult Bill also learned how to play the baritone horn and sang barbershop harmony with the Racing City Chorus. Bill is survived by his loving wife Florence, his seven children, Pat Gordon (Leon), Carol Gerbing (Dale), Nancy Stevens (Tim), Diane Loviza (Bob), William T. Hinckley Jr., Daniel Hinckley (Julie) and Mary Beth O?Connell (Jim). Bill is also survived by 15 grandchildren, 12 great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. The family would like to thank all of those who helped and treated Bill during his illnesses this year. Their kindness and compassion for dad, mom and the family at these locations was overwhelming: Saratoga Hospital, Wesley Rehab, The Pines, the Home of the Good Shepherd in Saratoga and Malta, and the Community Hospice.Bill was predeceased by his parents and his sister Ann Marie McGourty.A celebration of life service will be held at 11a.m. on Saturday, January 5, 2019 at the First Baptist Church of Ballston Spa, 202 Milton Ave., Ballston Spa, NY. September 1, 1926 ? February 17, 2014
The death of Joseph ?Joe? Basset of Humboldt, SK, (and formerly of Peterson, SK), occurred on Monday, February 17, 2014, at Humboldt District Hospital. He was 87 years of age. Joe, the youngest son of Henri and Marguerite (nee Tremel) Basset, was born on September 1, 1926, at home on their farm near Dana, SK. He was a year old when the family moved to a farm east of Peterson. Joe was 14 when he graduated from Grade 8 at Medomsley School and became a full-time farm boy. When Joe was 26, he purchased his own farm southwest of Peterson and moved there. On June 30, 1955, he married Verla Wilke at Meacham, SK. Together, they raised a family of eight. In 1981, Joe and Verla moved off the farm to an acreage northwest of Peterson. Joe loved all aspects of farming, but his favourite was swathing. Other much-loved activities included carpentry, checking the crops, riding his quad, growing potatoes, and rocking the newest baby in the family. In addition, Joe was a founding member of the Peterson Community Hall, took tender, loving care of St. Agnes Cemetery, took up the offerings at St. Agnes Church for many years, and was dedicated to his community in many other ways, always ready to pitch in wherever needed. More than anything Joe was a proud and devoted family man. He lost Verla, the love of his life, on May 12, 1997. In January 2011, he moved to Kinsmen Court in Humboldt, where he resided until his passing. Joe will be lovingly remembered and sadly missed by six children, 27 grandchildren, and 32 great-grandchildren: RONALD (Karon) Basset and family, Rene (Jody) Basset and children Nathan and Evan, Russell (Yvette) Basset and children Dolan, Brittany and Morgan; VERLA (Blaine) Bentley and family, Cara (Scott) Davidson and children Adrian and Jasper, Cameron Bentley, and Jesse Bentley; (PAUL?s family) Rhonda Basset and family, Tammy Basset, Adam (Tessa Gust) Basset and daughter Rhonnie, and Mikayla Basset; (JAMES? family) Linda Basset and family, Bradley (Jody) Basset and children Shelby, Carter and Trae, Christie (Bryan) Beggs and children Ethyn, Jackson, Hope and Ridge, Lisa (Blaine) Weiman and children Logan and Deakyn, Carla (Yves) Beaulac and children Thatcher and Rush, Joseph Basset (Paige Fraser), and BreeAnne Basset; JOCELYN (Gary) Knihnitski and family, Michelle (Joel) Irwin and children, Kate, Rhett and Finn, Curtis (Amanda) Knihnitski and children Peyton and Aubrey, Cory (Melissa) Knihnitski and children Aiden, Daymian, Nikolas and Jaclyn, and Christopher Knihnitski (Erin Kindrachuk); MARK (Connie) Basset and family, Aimee (Jason) Schlachter and children Ella and Anthony, Colin (Crystal) Basset and children Cole and Lane, Jennifer (Carl) Hewitt, and Alex Basset; CAROL (Bruce) Thiemann and family, Blake Thiemann and Drew Thiemann; and LAURA (Grant) Stahl and family, Ashley Stahl (Brent Flaman), Kassandra Stahl, and Jonathan Stahl; sister-in-law, Isabelle Basset; and by numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins. Nadean Elizabeth Bass (1932 ? 2019)

Nadean was born in Leavenworth, Kansas. She pursued her interest to become an educator at Pittsburg State Teachers College where she received her B.S. Ed. While in college, she met the love of her life - Robert A. Bass, Sr. and they were married in 1953. Most of their professional lives were spent in Seattle, with their three children; Mary Elizabeth, Robert Jr. (Bobby), and David Wayne. Nadean taught elementary physical education in the Seattle Schools for over twenty years. She was a member of Mt. Zion Baptist Church. Nadean and Robert's youngest child, David, has a developmental disability. They kept David at home and raised him and met with a small group of other parents who also had children with developmental disabilities. From this group came mothers who co-authored legislation that was the forerunner to the national law that protected educational rights for people with disabilities. Today David is an engaging, loving, spirited young man full of life. Another outcome of Nadean's activism, was Northwest Center, where in the early years, Nadean was active in fundraising and volunteering. Today, Northwest Center for People of All Abilities is a premier organization and on-going concern. Nadean's life exemplified the fruit of perseverance, patience, faithfulness, and love.

Nadean was preceded in death by her husband Robert and her son Robert Jr. (Bobby). She leaves to cherish her memories and spirit: her daughter, Mary and son, David; and many, devoted relatives and friends.

A memorial service will be held at Mt. Zion Baptist Church on Saturday, January 19th at 11am.

Contributions may be made to the Northwest Center for People of All Abilities in the name of Nadean Elizabeth Bass.

Elaine Hulterstrom Bassett (Picture included)

Elaine Hulterstrom Bassett, of Bellevue, Washington, passed away November 10, 2017. She was 65.

Elaine was born in La Mirada, California, to Betty Jean and Walter Hulterstrom. She and her four siblings loved the beach, the mountains, and their family cabin. She learned sewing from her aunt and flower arranging from her grandmother, talents she used for the rest of her life.

Elaine studied Elementary Education and Spanish at Brigham Young University. She and Kent Bassett were married two months after her graduation, and have spent the last 43 years together.

Elaine devoted her life to service. She raised five children in Bellevue, sewing Halloween costumes, choreographing talent show acts, seeking sea creatures at low tide, throwing creatively themed birthday parties, visiting the zoo and the science center, and attending countless recitals and sports events. She taught mini art lessons at Clyde Hill Elementary, arranged flowers for friends' weddings, ran a lunchtime service center at Bellevue High School, volunteered at church and served church members in the Hispanic community.

For the past sixteen years, "Teacher Elaine" taught preschool at the Bellevue Boys and Girls Club, building a curriculum around children's books, creative art projects, birdwatching, and weekly field trips. She encouraged and enabled kids to observe the natural world.

Amature conservationists, the Bassetts have worked to restore forests in Costa Rica and native species on their Humptulips River property. Recently they and another couple bought the slopes of Steptoe Butte, an Eastern Washington landmark, to protect it from development and to preserve its endangered Palouse prairie habitat for future generations.

Elaine offered unconditional love to all who knew her, writing kind notes and making phone calls to family and friends until the day of her death. She is survived by her husband, Kent; their five children, Loralee, David, Katie, Erik, and Andrea; eight and a half grandchildren; and many who would claim her as a second daughter/sister/mother.

Lee Bass co-owned construction firm

Eastside traffic would be much worse without the work of Leland "Lee" Bass.

As co-owners of Bass Construction, Lee Bass and his brother, Bill, built some of the region's busiest commercial thoroughfares, including widening the Lake Hills Connector and Richards Road in Bellevue.

The Bass brothers started out digging foundations for houses. But by 1956, they switched to road construction to coincide with the Eastside's population spurt. Many of their projects expanded sleepy two-lane roads into four-lane arteries.

Mr. Bass died May 14 of heart failure after suffering a heart attack the day before. He was 85.

Mr. Bass was a tenacious, strong-willed man who relished tackling civic projects.

In the early 1970s, he fought for bond money that had been allocated to build a community center in Magnolia but spent elsewhere. Along with his good friend, attorney Bill Caton, Mr. Bass lobbied Seattle city officials to replace the money, said his oldest child, Steve Bass. Today, a plaque at the Magnolia center honors the pair's contributions.

Mr. Bass also was an early supporter of building the Interbay Golf Club and was active in environmental issues on Camano Island, where his family owned a second home.

Mr. Bass encouraged his three daughters to pursue careers in banking, saying the business offered good pay and benefits for women. They did just that: Mary Bass at Wells Fargo, Joanne Wilson at Bank of America and Kathy Hays at Washington Federal Savings. Steve, Mr. Bass' only son, is an accountant.

Mr. Bass was a detail-oriented man who kept a sharp eye on construction costs. Mary Bass fondly recalls her father taking the family on Sunday drives to show off his road projects, which usually meant surveying "a mound of dirt somewhere in the middle of nowhere."

Mr. Bass was born in Clearlake, Skagit County. His father's family was from England and his mother's family came from Poland. But Mr. Bass' ruddy cheeks, white hair, gleaming eyes and a penchant for singing hinted at a different lineage.

"We always thought there was some Irish in him somewhere," said Mary Bass, vice president of private and commercial banking at Wells Fargo in Seattle.

He graduated from Ballard High School in 1937 and earned a business degree from the University of Washington. His wife of 52 years, the former Lucille Easton, died in 1997.

A devoted father, he attended countless baseball and basketball games, ballet performances and piano recitals, Wilson said. He taught his children to water ski and never to shrink from a challenge.

Mr. Bass suffered from dementia in his later years. His children eventually won a court-appointed guardian to oversee his affairs ? a move that family members said angered Mr. Bass. His children had little contact with him in recent years.

"He had dementia and he had a personality change," Mary Bass said. "All of his kids really missed him the last couple years of his life."

Wilson said that even though she and her siblings never made their peace with their father before he died, she will remember him as a great and loving man.

"The good part isn't forgotten," she said.

In addition to his children, Mr. Bass is survived by his daughter-in-law, Stella Bass; sons-in-law Dave Wilson and Perry Hays; and four grandsons, all of Seattle. A memorial service is planned tomorrow at 1 p.m. at Evergreen Memorial Park, 11111 Aurora Ave. N.

Memorials may be made to the Magnolia Presbyterian Church Elevator Fund.

Christian County, Kentucky Biographies
Frank Houston Bassett
Frank Houston Bassett was born in Stephensport, Ky., November 1, 1873, and came to Hopkinsville as a boy when his brother, E.B. Bassett, came to open a store. He comes of Welsh stock. His parents were James H. and Georgia (Houston) Bassett. His paternal grandparents were Jeremiah V. Bassett and Tryphenia Wellesley (Birch) Bassett. His maternal grandparents were Dr. Robert R. Houston and Mary (Frank) Houston. Subject began his business career as a merchant and on February 23, 1898, was married to Miss Mamie Elizabeth Thompson, only child of Charles T. Thompson, a prominent hardware merchant. Some years after his marriage he took up the study of medicine and following his graduation at once took a prominent position in his profession. While still a practicing physician, he was elected a city commissioner in 1916, and served until his election as mayor of Hopkinsville in 1918. After four years in that office, he was elected county court clerk of Christian County in 1922, as a Democrat, and re-elected in 1926 and 1930 for terms of four years. One of his ancestors afterwards, Rev. Thomas Erskine Birch, an Episcopal minister, was an ensign on the Bon Homme Richard in the famous sea fight with the Serapis. He is a member of Westminster Presbyterian Church. Dr. and Mrs. Bassett were the parents of three children. The oldest, Charles Thompson, died when a youth, Florence is the wife of John Jarrell, of Atlanta, Ga. and Frank H. Jr., who married Sara Bell McPherson, is in business in Hopkinsville.

Frank H. Bassett
History of Kentucky Volume V
1922
Frank H. Bassett, M.D. From the earliest period of statehood to the present the Bassett family has been a prominent one in the western counties of Kentucky. Several of the name have lived in Hopkinsville, which is the home of Dr. Frank H. Bassett, formerly a merchant of that city, in later years a practicing physician, and now the vigorous and capable mayor of the city.
Doctor Bassett, was born at Stephensport, Kentucky, November 1, 1872. His paternal ancestors were Welsh and Colonial Americans. His grandfather, Jeremiah Vardeman Bassett, was born in 1797 at Cynthiana, Kentucky, this date establishing the fact that the family's settlement in Kentucky was some years before the close of the eighteenth century. Grandfather Bassett was a saddler by trade, spent most of his active life at Cynthiana, but finally moved out to Northwest Missouri and died at Plattsburg in 1887. His wife, Tryphenia Wellesley Birch also died at Plattsburg, in 1889.
James H. Bassett, father of Doctor Bassett, was born in Cynthiana in 1828. He spent his early life in his native town, and after his marriage in Breckinridge County lived on his farm there for a number of years. He was a graduate of Transylvania College at Lexington, and on leaving college went to work in the Louisville post office and some years later, in 1877, he returned to Louisville and again resumed work in the post office. That was his business connection until 1890, when he was appointed postmaster of Parkland, now part of the City of Louisville. He held that post of responsibility four years, and then removed to a farm in Grayson County, and was active in the agricultural affairs of that vicinity until his death, which occurred near Litchfield in 1914. He was a staunch Democrat of the old school. James H. Bassett married Georgia Houston, who was born in Washington, D.C., in 1832 and died at Litchfield in Grayson County, Kentucky, in 1904. She was closely related to the same family that produced Sam Houston, a governor of Texas. Her mother, Mary (Frank) Houston, was the State of Georgia's official flower girl delegated to strew flowers in front of General Lafayette on his second visit to the United States in 1825. Mary S. Bassett, oldest of the children of James H. Bassett and wife, is a resident of Litchfield, Kentucky, and is the widow of John H. Kenny, who was a dentist practicing at Paducah for many years and who died in 1896. Julia B. Bassett, the next in the family, lives at Louisville and is the widow of Carroll C. Chick, who was owner and operator of a flour mill at Mt. Sterling, Kentucky. Georgia B. Bassett lives at Birmingham, Alabama, widow of Samuel R. Dent, who for many years was engaged in merchandising at Litchfield, Kentucky. Robert J. Bassett is president of the Grayson County State Bank at Litchfield. James H. Bassett, Jr., who was born in 1863, had only one business association in all his active life, spending thirty-three years with the Hegan Mantle Company, and while traveling representative of that house he was killed, being hit by an automobile, and he died at Lynchburg, Virginia, in 1913. Edmund Ruffin Bassett, who was a retired banker when he died at Louisville in 1918, a victim of the influenza, was named for Edmund Ruffin, the Confederate soldier who fired the first shot at Fort Sumter at the beginning of the Civil war. The seventh of the Bassett children is Col. Erskine B. Bassett, the oldest merchant of Hopkinsville in point of continuous service, and who was an active member of the Kentucky State Bar from 1884 until he was mustered into the National Army at the beginning of the World war, and was colonel of the One Hundred and Fiftieth Infantry in France. Florence B. Bassett, who died at Louisville, Kentucky, in 1903, was the wife of J.Y. Johnson, who now lives in St. Louis, Missouri, being a civil engineer with the St. Louis Street Railway Company.
Frank H. Bassett was the tenth and youngest of this notable family. He spent most of his boyhood in Louisville, attending the Sacred Heart parochial school and graduating from St. Xavier's College in Louisville in 1887. For four years he was employed in the dry goods department of Colonel Bassett's store, and from 1891 was employed for two years by J.M. Robinson & Company at Louisville. In 1893, returning to Hopkinsville, he resumed work in his brother's dry goods business until 1898. and following that was an associate member of the hardware firm of Thompson & Bassett until 1905, when he sold out and used his means to carry out along the cherished purpose of becoming a physician. He entered the medical depatment of the University of Nashville, and received his M.D. degree in 1910. For one year he practiced as an interne in the Tennessee Hospital of Nashville, and then carried on a general practice at Hopklnsville six years. Since then his work has been largely as a specialist in anesthesia and as medical examiner for various insurance companies. He is a member of the County, State and American Medical associations.
Doctor Bassett has always been a staunch Democrat, but his political work has been entirely confined to the government of his home city. When Hopkinsville was given a new charter under the commission form of government he was one of the first city commissioners elected in 1915, beginning his duties in 1916. In that year he announced his intention of becoming a candidate for mayor in November, 1917, two years away, and when his name was presented as candidate for that office there was no opposition and he entered upon his career as mayor in January, 1918, and during the past two years has done much to dignify the office in the eyes of citizens and has given an administration of municipal affairs efficient and competent in every respect.
Doctor Bassett is a member of the Presbyterian Church, and is a past exalted ruler of Hopkinsville Lodge No. 545 of the Elks. He has been duly prospered in his business and professional career, and is owner of four business houses and several dwellings in Hopkinsville, his own home at 145 Alumni Avenue being one of the best residences in Western Kentucky.
On February 23, 1898, at Hopkinsville, Doctor Bassett married Miss Mamie Elizabeth Thompson. Her father, the late Charles A. Thompson, was one of the early hardware merchants of Hopkinsville. Mrs. Bassett finished her education in the Mary Sharp College of Winchester, Tennessee. To their union were born three children: Charles Thompson, who died at the age of sixteen; Florence Marshall, born November 1, 1902, now a student in an eastern college, and Frank H. Jr., who was born August 15, 1906.

Robert J. Bassett
(From History of Kentucky)
Robert J. Bassett - Back of every commercial and industrial undertaking of the country is to be found the banking institutions of the communities in which they are located, and consequently each man, woman and child in the United States is dependent upon these financial concerns for daily support. Were the banks to be wiped out of existence such a condition of chaos would reign as to beggar description. Business cannot be carried on without the backing, co-operation and approval of the banks; if business stops the employe is without work and his employer is without profit. The farmer has no market for his produce, so stops shipping, and the railroads no longer maintain their regular schedule. The country reverts to a worse condition than that prevailing before it was developed through civilizing influences, and the work of the ages is rendered nil. Such a condition will not prevail, there is no danger of that, but it is only just for the public to realize the importance of the banking institutions and their officials who keep them what they are. There are few communities in the country with any pretention to business importance which do not have one or more of these constructive forces at work in their midst, and in the case of Leitchfield, the county seat, there are naturally several of them. One of the leading institutions of this kind in the county is the Grayson County State Bank of Leitchfield, of which Robert J. Bassett is the president, and in his dignified and capable handling of its manifold affairs proves his ability as a financier and justifies his associates in their choice of him as the presiding official.
Robert J. Bassett was born at Stephensport, Breckinridge County, Kentucky, a son of James H. Bassett, grandson of Jeremiah Vardiman Bassett, and a member of an old family of Delaware, from whence his great-grandfather came to Kentucky and settled in what was then Bracken County, but is now Robertson County. Here he was engaged in farming, being one of the pioneers of his neighborhood. He had thirteen sons and one daughter. Jeremiah V. Bassett was born at Bassett's Ridge, in what is now Robertson County, Kentucky and died in Missouri. He was reared in Robertson County and spent the greater part of his life at Cynthiana, Kentucky, where he was a pioneer merchant. Active in politics, he was an ardent Whig. He married a Miss Birch, a daughter of Judge James Birch.
James H. Bassett was born at Cynthiana, Kentucky, in 1829, and died at Leitchfield, Kentucky, in 1913. Reared at Cynthiana, he moved in young manhood to Breckinridge County, Kentucky, and was there married and began farming, in which calling he attained to an enviable degree of success. His political convictions made him a Democrat. He married Georgia Houston, who was born in Washington, District of Columbia, in 1830, and died at Leitchfield, Kentucky, in 1905. Their children were as follows: Mary S., who in the widow of J.H. Kenny, a dentist, resides at Leitchfield; Julia, who resides at Louisville, Kentucky, is the widow of C.C. Chick, formerly a merchant of Leitchfield; Georgia H., who resides at Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, is the widow of Samr. R. Dent, formerly a merchant of Leitchfield; Robert J. whose name heads this review; Enna, who married W.F. Gregory, of the city department of Louisville, Kentucky; James H., who was with the Hegan Company of Louisville, Kentucky, died at Lynchburg, Virginia, when forty years old; Edmund R., who was a banker, died at Louisville in 1917,; Erskine B., who is a merchant of Hopkinsville, Kentucky; Florence, who died at Leitchfield, was the wife of J.Y. Johnson, formerly a merchant of Paducah, Kentucky, but now a resident of Saint Louis, Missouri, where he is employed by the City Railway Company; and Dr. Frank H., who is a physician and surgeion of Hopkinsville.
Robert J. Bassett attended the rural schools of Breckinridge County, and then became a student of Saint Mary's College at Lebanon, Kentucky, where he remained for one year, leaving this institution in 1877. At that time he embarked in a mercantile business at Cave City, Kentucky, and reamined there until 1883, when he came to Leitchfield and established a general store, but later confined his stock to hardware and implements. Subsequently he incorporated this business with himself as president, and it is now the leading store of its kind between Elizabethtown and Princeton, Kentucky, and he still continues at its head. In 1904, Mr. Bassett entered the field of finance as cashier of Grayson County State Bank, of which he was made president in 1911, and this position he still holds to the entire satisfaction of the stockholders and general public. This is one of the strong financial concerns of this part of the state and was established in 1886 as a state bank. The officials of the bank are as follows: R.J. Bassett, president; E.B. Tilford, vice president; Gayle Praithen, cashier; Aubrey Moorman, first assistant cashier; and J.C. Pickerill, second assistant cashier. The bank has a capital of $25,000; a surplus of $18,000, and deposits of $500,000. This bank occupies a modern brick building on the northeast corner of the Public Square. Mr. Bassett is also president of the Grayson County Supply Company, which he incorporated, and served as a member of the Kentucky State Board of Agriculture for fifteen years. He owns a modern residence on West Walnut Street, where he maintains a comfortable home. In politics he is a republican. The Baptist Church holds his membership and he is serving it as a deacon.
In 1881 Mr. Bassett married at Leitchfield Miss Hattie Moorman, a daughter of Lemuel and Martha (Worthman) Moorman, both of who died recently. For many years Mr. Moorman was a farmer of Grayson County. Mr. and Mrs. Bassett have two sons, W.M. and Carroll B. W.M. Bassett is a physician and surgeon of San Antonio, Texas, and a veteran of the World war. He was graduated from the Hospital College of Medicine at Louisville, Kentucky, with the degree of Doctor of Medicine, and was engaged in a general practice at the outbreak of the late war. Like so many of his profession, he volunteered, was commissioned a major and was overseas in France for nearly a year. Carroll B. Bassett is also a resident of San Antonio, Texas, where he is engaged in business as a dealer in automobile tires. He, too, served during the late war. Sent overseas to France, he served there for about a year and received his commission as a first lieutenant. President Bassett is one of the sound and dependable me of Grayson County, and one who has closely identified himself with its growth in many directions. He is proud of the progress which has been made and that he has been able to be so constructive a force in his community.
