| 48613 | The Spokesman-Review, Spokane, Washington, Thursday, 24 July 2008 Minnie Maria Bassett Clear Spot in Field Marks Child?s Grave There is a field of barley a few miles outside Four Lakes along Granite Lake Road. In the distance, a field of winter wheat slopes up a hillside, interrupted only by a 50-foot spot of open space that has been left undisturbed for more than a century. Crops have been planted all around but never over that particular piece of land. That open space is the gravesite of Minnie Maria Bassett, a little girl who drowned in a nearby spring in the summer of 1873. She was just a year-and-a-half old. "It's a good thing, preserving the grave," said Jerry Johnson, who farms the surrounding land owned by his mother-in-law, Lorraine McMillan. Minnie was born Jan. 2, 1872, in a cabin on the south side of the Spokane River near where the Post Street Bridge now stands in downtown Spokane. Historical accounts state that she was the first white child born "at Spokane Falls, Washington Territory." She was the daughter of Wilbur Fisk Bassett, a prospector, carpenter and millwright who discovered gold in the Clearwater district in Idaho near Orofino in 1860, helped build the first sawmill in Spokane, farmed in the Four Lakes-Cheney area and is credited with naming Granite, Silver and Clear lakes. When Minnie was still a baby, the family moved to a cabin built by her father on the same hillside where she is buried. That cabin, destroyed by fire in about 1884, was about 100 yards from a spring which has been known as Bassett Spring since the family homesteaded there. The spring, surrounded by a cluster of trees, is historically significant for two reasons. It was the site where Col. George Wright and 700 soldiers camped in 1858 the night before engaging a group of Coeur d'Alene, Palouse and Spokane Indians in what was known as the Battle of Four Lakes. It is also the spring where Minnie drowned. Herman S. Bassett, Minnie's older brother, lived into old age and was the publisher of the Harrington Citizen for 52 years. In 1953, local historian and school teacher E.T. Becher wrote a history of the Bassett family, largely based on interviews with Herman Bassett, in The Spokesman-Review. In the account, Bassett remembers his sister's death: "The soil had not been broken, and the native unplowed ground toward the spring constituted a virtual flower garden at that time of year. Minnie loved to pick these flowers, and to play amongst them … (when Minnie couldn't be found) the search finally led to the spring, the child was found floating on the surface, together with a considerable number of flowers which she had been holding in her hand before she fell in. It is thought that Minnie got into trouble either by noticing her reflection in the water, or that she was attempting to put the flowers in water, when she tripped and fell in." Bassett noted that their father carved Minnie's initials into a headstone he fashioned from a piece of granite retrieved from nearby Granite Lake. That marker still stands above the grave. Becher – author of "Spokane Corona, Eras & Empires," which chronicles development of the region – taught at Rogers High School in Spokane. In 1956 his history class constructed a 3-foot rock wall encircling the grave site to protect and help preserve it for the future. A newspaper account notes that the students had to carry in sand, cement and water for the job and that they placed a bronze tablet at the site commemorating Minnie. "To the consideration given to Minnie Maria's grave … by each succeeding owner of the land, much has been done to preserve this spot for its historical significance, and we appreciate it," Herman Bassett was quoted as saying. Looking up at the grave from his fields today, farmer Jerry Johnson said that sometimes people interested in regional history stop by and ask about the grave. He and his wife Judy McMillan don't mind. And sometimes they take people up there. But only after harvest. | Bassett, Minnie Maria (I4481)

| 48617 | The Springfield Advertiser, Green COUnty, Missouri, 1844-1850 March 17, 1849 Mr. Theophilus Bass, a member of last legislature from Taney Co. (MO), died in Jefferson City, Sunday last after an illness of nearly 2 months. Mr. Bass was an excellent man and many warm friends will mourn his early loss. We sympathize with the bereaved family who are thus deprived of their companion, father and best of earthly friends. Early History of Stone County, Missouri, Pari II By Charles L. Henson Theophilos Bass Theophilos Bass lived on Wheeler Branch where he was an active figure in this area. He was elected as Representative of Taney County in 1848 to the 15th General Assembly. His untimely death at the age of 38 on March 11, 1849, or the day preceding the adjournment of the Assembly, may have deprived him of the honor of participating in the creation of this county. He was buried on the State?s Cemetery lot in Jefferson City where some fourteen other Representatives who died at other sessions are buried. The first news the widow had of his death was when two fellow members led his horse and brought his personal belongings to her door. She implied the news at sight of their approach. In those days it would have been impossible to have handled the situation otherwise. His widow afterwards married Samuel D. Nelson who was an active agent of the county's many developments. One of the daughters of this marriage, Ophelia, was married to J. Frank Seaman, later to become cashier of the Stone County Bank with William B. Cox as its president. It was the first bank in this county. Another daughter, Octavia, was married to John A. McCullah, a son of John Wesley McCullah, who came here in 1849 and thereafter was an early day merchant a few miles north of the present site of Crane, Missouri. | Bass, Theophilus (I45)

| 48637 | The St. Bernard Voice, Arabi, Louisiana, Friday, November 12, 2021 Robbie May Eliza Bass Robbie May Eliza Bass, Houston, TX, went on to the Lord on Saturday, October 16, 2021. Robbie was born in McNeill, MS, on November 7, 1928, and she lived a long and beautiful life, passing just three weeks shy of her 93rd birthday. Robbie was born to Mitchell Joseph McAndrews and Stella Loveless McAndrews. Robbie was raised by her loving mother and stepfather, Floyd Jefferson Seal, in Poplarville, MS. She was preceded in death by her father, mother and stepfather, husband, Larkin L. Bass, Sr., and her oldest daughter, Vera Bass DiMaggio as well as her siblings, David, Frank, Claude, Mary, Hester May, Myrena, and Claire Bell, all of Mississippi. Robbie is survived by children Robbie Serio (Pete), Larkin L. Bass, Jr., Connie Alphonso (Rick), Louis G. Bass and son in law Gregory DiMaggio. She leaves behind grandchildren Rebecca St. Philip, Gregory DiMaggio, Jr., Erin Serio, Jennifer Serio, Larkin L. Bass, III, James Jeffrey Bass, Renee Alphonso, Nicholas Koehn, and Evan Bass. She also leaves behind numerous great grandchildren, including Lannie St.Phillip, Cailey St.Phillip, Devin DiMaggio, Logan DiMaggio, Joleen DiMaggio, Chloe Novick, Taylor Bass, Larkin Bass, IV, Alyssa Bass, Candence Bass, Jaxon Bass and Trinity Bass, great-grandchildren Azalea Burkett and Ailani Burkett; and she is also survived by her cherished Labradoodle, Buddy Guy. Robbie grew up and became of age during the Great Depression and emerged an incredibly strong force in her family's lives. As a result, she understood a lot more about life by the time she was legally able to drive a car than many of us learn in a lifetime. Robbie was extremely proud of the fact that she was able to be a loving and devoted daughter, sister, wife, mother, grandmother, and friend to many, as well as a surrogate family member to so many who were not as blessed as she was. She considered herself so blessed to be able to meet her future lifelong soulmate ("Larkin") at the tender age of 12 years old, and she married at 19 years old. Robbie and Larkin were married for 42 years where they made a home and a life in New Orleans, and they were able to raise a family at a time when life just seemed to be a simpler place. Subsequent to Larkin's passing in 1987, Robbie moved to Houston with her daughter, Connie, and Rick. When her granddaughter, Renee, was born in New Orleans, Robbie had another calling --being an incredibly devoted grandmother (as well as second mother) to Renee. They were inseparable (we called them Siamese twins) for such a long time until Renee went off to college. Robbie loved to travel, and, for a modest little girl from Mississippi, she traveled to some of the most amazing places in North America. For almost 25 years, she traveled with Connie and Rick with the American Academy of Attorney-Certified Public Accountants ("AAA-CPA"), and she was the surrogate grandmother to so many children during the AAA-CPA semi-annual and annual Board of Directors' Meetings and Annual Conferences. All of the directors knew and loved Robbie, and she became a surrogate grandmother to all of the directors' children while they attended to AAA-CPA business. In the twilight of her life, Robbie loved to crochet, doing word search puzzles, and spending time in Orange Beach, AL, which was her happy place! She loved the cool breezes and the beach life. Robbie's family wishes to thank her devoted care team at Seven Acres Jewish Senior Care Services, where Robbie resided for the last two and a half years of her life! Her care management team was incredibly devoted to Robbie, and Seven Acres said she was one of the most pleasant residents ever. Relatives and friends are invited to attend a Celebration of Life and private interment on Monday, November 15, 2021 starting at 10:30 a.m. to be held at St. Bernard Memorial Funeral Home and Gardens, Chalmette, LA. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that you consider a contribution to Seven Acres Jewish Senior Care Services on the Pauline Sterne Wolff Campus, 6200 N. Braeswood Blvd., Houston, TX 77074, 713.778.5700 ext. 208, in her name. | 48639 | The St. Louis Star and Times, Saturday, 16 August 1941 Suicide Verdict Is Returned In Mrs. Bass? Death Wife of Widely-known Attorney Found Fatally Shot at Her Home A coroner?s verdict of ?suicide while suffering a temporary mental aberration? was returned today in the death of Mrs. Helen Patricia Bass, 38-year-old wife of Sigmund M. Bass, widely-known St. Louis Lawyer who specializes in the practice of criminal law. Mrs. Bass was found dead in their home at 32 Vandeventer place last night, a bullet wound in her right chest. Bass, testifying at the inquest, said his wife had been morose and twice in the past had attempted suicide. Dr. John Connor, family physician and one of the physicians attached to the coroner?s office, said there were powder burns around the wound. A 22-caliber automatic target pistol was found near her right hand. Bass testified he found his wife lying between twin beds in her bedroom, clad in a nightgown, shortly before 9 o?clock last night and immediately called police. Didn?t Fee Well ?Before I left the office,? he said, ?I had a call from Mrs. bass. She said she was not feeling well and preferred that we did not eat out. ?When I arrived home, she called from upstairs to ask me to set the table. She came down presently and started to eat, but pushed the plate aside and ran upstairs. ?I finished eating, then decided not to bother her and got into my car and started out to visit a relative. I drove as far as Skinker, turned around and went back home. ?When I got back to the house, the light in her room was on. I went to my room and went to bed to read a magazine for a while. Either then or later, I noticed that the drawer in my dresser where I keep my 22-caliber target pistol was open. ?After reading for a while, I went to her room to get the newspaper, which I thought she had. Opening the door, I found her dead. Her body was lying between the twin beds. The brown leather holster for the pistol was on one of the beds, and the gun itself was lying at her side.? Made Two Attempts Bass said his wife had taken overdoses of sleeping powder several years ago, twice attempting suicide. Mrs. Bass, the second wife of the lawyer, was the daughter of James McCaffery and the present Mrs. Marie Honegger, 5312 Sutherland avenue. She was married to bass in Michigan City, Ind. on August 1, 1927, about a year after Bass was divorced from Mrs. Ada R. Bass. They have no children. Mrs. Bass is also survived by two brothers, James McCaffery, Jr., and Albert Honegger. Bass, 53 years old, is the son of the late Simson S. Bass, also widely known for his practice in criminal law. | Bass, Sigmund Martin (I10)

| 48645 | The Standard-Examiner, Ogden, Utah, Saturday, February 7, 2015 Athleen Marette Bassett 1919 ~ 2014 Athleen Marette Bassett is pictured here celebrating her 95th birthday on March 19, 2014. She passed away as a result of heart failure twenty-four days later, on April 12. For her last twelve years on this earth she had been a resident of Redwood Terrace, in Escondido, California where she enjoyed excellent care and fellowship. A memorial service, conducted by Pastor Greg Roderick of Ramona, was held at Redwood Terrace on May 4. Athleen was a warm-hearted, ever-smiling Christian lady who always had a kind word and never expressed bitterness or anger toward anyone. She was a sterling member of what is called 'The Greatest Generation'. Born in a one-room structure on a small farm in southeastern Idaho, at age five she moved with her family to Ogden, Utah, where she attended public schools and Weber College. Three months after Pearl Harbor, with her two older brothers, Clyde and Allan, already in uniform, Athleen moved to San Diego to do her part. She took an office job at the Armed Services YMCA and continued there until retirement in 1981 - thirty-nine years of faithful service at the 'home away from home' of our sailors, Marines and soldiers. In retirement Athleen cared for her widowed mother, Inez. In 2001 she moved from San Diego to Escondido's Redwood Terrace with her dear friend and sister-in-law, Sally Bassett. She gave loving support and care to Sally, who was gradually declining due to Parkinson's disease, and was at Sally's side when she passed away in 2007. Athleen never married and had no children. She was preceded in death by her parents, Ross and Inez Bassett of Ogden, Utah, and is buried at their side at the Ogden City Cemetery, and likewise by her brothers, Dr. Clyde Bassett of Escondido and Allan Bassett of Sherman Oaks. She is survived by niece Penny Parsons, of Alexandria, Virginia and nephew Brant Bassett, of Escondido, plus seven great-nieces and nephews. Their loss of their dear 'Aunt Athie' is hard to bear, and softened only by the hope of seeing her again someday.
