Joan Bassett Procopio
COLUMBIA - Joan Bassett Procopio, 61, of Columbia, South Carolina, passed peacefully as she slept on March 17th, 2005, returning home to God's loving embrace. Born in Cleveland, Ohio, on January 4th, 1944, she is survived by her sons, Robert Jr., Vincent, and Michael; daughter, Deborah Finan and her husband John, along with grandaughters, Abigail and Katherine; brothers, John and Richard Bassett of Cleveland, and sister, Barbara Aker of North Olmsted, Ohio. Her parents, Roy and Ruth Bassett, also of Cleveland, preceded her in passing. Joan graduated from West Technical High School in Cleveland, Ohio, and went on to attend Cleveland Institute of Art. Thereafter, she married Robert A. Procopio and worked as a commercial artist for Reuben H. Donnelly company creating yellow pages advertisements in Cleveland, New York and then Pittsburgh in addition to being an active Avon cosmetics representative, all while raising four children... a truly incredible feat. She was the most patient and loving mother any child could be blessed with, and with her warm smiles and gentle hugs always reassured us that everything was going to be all right. In later years, she was active as a volunteer in South Carolina, being named Volunteer of the Year for various state programs as well as speaking at special engagements. Truly a woman of many talents, she was most gifted as an artist, her specialties in painting with oils, acrylics and water colors and sketching with charcoal, not to mention being a superb cook and handy with thread and needle. Joan was also an excellent gardener with a true green thumb, and always had the most beautiful, vibrant gardens, with tulips of all colors her favorite. Around the holiday season, she had a knack for decorating and loved spending Christmas with her family, whom she loved dearly. Mama, we love you and miss you so much, and know that you are the most beautiful angel in Heaven, painting sunsets and rainbows with wonderful colors for us all to gaze up and wonder at. You are home now, Mam, with God looking after His most special daughter the way you looked after all of us. Sweet dreams, Mama. Private services held at Mitchell Funeral Home on Friday, March 25th, in Raleigh, North Carolina.

Coach Marvin Crosby Bass, affectionately called the ?Moose?, went to be with his Lord and Saviour Friday, December 3, 2010. Born in Norfolk, Virginia August 28, 1919, he was a son of the late Alexander B. and Mamie Riddle Bass. Mr. Bass was preceded in death by his loving wife of 53 years, Audrey Lee Wallace Bass and his only child, Wallace Randolph ?Randy? Bass; brothers, Claude Peyton Bass, Frederick Alexander Bass, Howard Allen Bass, and sister Mamie Bass Spires.
Mr. Bass received his Bachelor of Science Degree from the College of William Mary Class of 1943 and served two years in the US Navy as a Pharmacy Mate 3rd Class during World War II.
Coach Marvin Bass? college and professional football career spanned 60 years, but his most memorable years were spent as an assistant coach (1954-59), and Head Football Coach and Athletic Director (1961-65) at the University of South Carolina where he formed a bond of love and respect with his players that remained until his death.
Sixty years of college and professional football coaching can be summed up in the following words: ?hard work, discipline, and punctuality.? These are the values Coach Marvin Bass learned under Coach Carl Voyles while an All-American football player at William and Mary College from 1939-1942.
Prior to receiving a full athletic scholarship to William and Mary, Marvin Bass became a football star at Petersburg High School in Petersburg, Virginia, where he lived the philosophy his parents stressed, ?Do the things you should do ? no the things you want to do.? A product of a supportive and loving family, Coach Bass practiced daily the core values he was taught as a young boy. His hard work and dedication earned him the position of tackle on Virginia?s All-State High School team in 1937. He was also named All-State and All-Southern High School Player of the Year in 1938.
While at William and Mary, Bass was named Honorary Captain of the William and Mary Fabulous Freshman Team in 1939 and named All-State player on call of Virginia?s football teams from 1940 through 19423. He was named to the All-Southern College Football team (?42), Captain of William of Mary?s Championship team (?42), which compiled a 9-1-1 record, Helms All-America (?42) and named to the College All-Star Team (?42). The all-star game to be played in Chicago in 1942 was cancelled due to World War II.
Following his incredible football career at William and Mary, Marvin was drafted by the Detroit Lions in 1942. The sixty years that followed the draft speak volumes of this giant in football?s coaching career: Assistant Coach William and Mary ? 1944-47; Assistant Coach University of North Carolina ? 1948-49, Assistant Coach William and Mary ? 1949-50 (Coach Bass was carried off the field on the shoulders of the opponent players ? UNC); Head Coach William and Mary ? 1951; Assistant Coach Washington Red Skins (NFL) ? 1952 under Coach Curly Lambeau; Assistant Coach University of North Carolina ? 1953 -1955; Assistant Coach University of South Carolina ? 1955-59; Assistant Coach Georgia Tech ? 1960 under Head Coach Bobby Dodd; Head Coach and Athletic Director University of South Carolina ? 1961-66; Head Coach and Athletic Director Montreal Beavers ? Continental league ? 1966-69; Assistant Coach Buffalo Bills (NFL) ? 1970-72; Assistant Coach University of Richmond ? 1973, Assistant Coach Birmingham Americans (World Football League) ? 1975-75, Head Coach Birmingham Vulcans ? World Football League ? World Football League Champions ? 1976; Assistant Coach Buffalo Bills (NFL) ? 1977-78; Assistant Coach Calgary Stampeders ? 1979-81; Assistant Coach Denver Broncos (3 Super Bowls) ? 1982-93 under Head Coach Dan Reeves.
In 2004, Marvin Bass ended his 60-year coaching career with the Atlanta Falcons (Super Bowl ? 1999) at 85 years young.
Marvin Bass was a Phi Beta Kappa at William and Mary; Who?s Who among Students in American Colleges and Universities; Member of the ?13? Club at William and Mary; President SAE Fraternity; Marvin Bass Day ? City of Petersburg, Virginia ? 1951; Assistant Coach of the Year ? 1954; ?Coach of the Year? (1966) ? ?Coach and Athletic Magazine?; Head Coach for Blue/Gray Game Montgomery, Alabama ? 1963; Blue Key Honorary Member USC ? 1964; City of Columbia Bi-Centennial Award; 35-Year Member of the US College Coaches Association; Honorary Member USC Block ?C? Club; Named to William and Mary?s All-Time Football Team ? 1990 and State of Virginia All-Time Team; William and Mary?s Athletic Hall of Fame and the Commonwealth of Virginia Sports Hal of Fame ? 1992; The Marvin Bass Strength and Conditioning Center ? U.S.C. Williams Brice Stadium ? 2000. In 2005, Bass received the Order of the Crescent Moon, issued by Governor Mark Sanford and presented by former USC football player and SC Senator, Mike Fair.

One brother, Donald Wilburn Bass and wife Roberta Bass of Gilmer, Sister-in-law Joyce Yvonne Farris and husband Billy Don Farris of Athens. Seven great grandchildren, Emily and Elizabeth Beason, Hudson and Presley Howell, Hadley and Harper Ferguson, Julia Smith and numerous nieces and nephews.
His family moved to Lone Star in 1935 where they worked in the logging business. Rex worked for Lone Star Steel Company before he began his 35-year employment with Morris County in 1955 as motor grader operator. In 1966 he was elected County Commissioner of Precinct 2 and was subsequently elected to six consecutive 4-year terms. During his tenure as Commissioner, the new Morris County Courthouse was built and he was instrumental in the design of the County Road signs in the shape of Morris County which are currently in use today. He also served as President of the Northeast Texas County Judges and Commissioners Convention from 1985-86.
Rex was a dedicated and active member of South Union Missionary Baptist Church for over 70 years. When a service was held, he filled his pew, as health permitted. He served as Deacon, Secretary to the Deacons, Church Clerk, Assistant Sunday School Superintendent, Church Trustee, Assistant Music Director, Building Committee member, 1st Vice President of the Men?s Brotherhood, Maintenance Committee member, Teacher of the New Members class and taught various other Sunday School and Christian Education classes.
One of his ?favorite? organizations was the Masonic Lodge. He was also a member of the Oasis Lodge #79 AF and AM for 66 years. Of course, he never missed an opportunity to ?flip? pancakes at the annual Pancake Breakfast. His Masonic work included: Charter Member of Iron Bluff Lodge #1376 AF & AM, District Deputy Grand Master Masonic Grand Lodge of Texas No. 6, Past Master of Iron Bluff Lodge #1376 AF/AM and Oasis Lodge #79 AF/AM, District Masonic Instructor for 57 years, Lifetime proficiency certificate in the Masonic work, Golden Trowel award from Iron Bluff Lodge and Daingerfield Oasis Lodge (Terrell #83 Lodge), 33rd 2nd Degree Scottish Rite Mason, Knight Templar, Chapter and Council of Pittsburg, Texas. Rex and Betty enjoyed hunting and camping together, as well as farming and growing most of their own vegetables and sharing those with family and neighbors. Peanut Brittle was one of his favorite recipes to share and he rarely missed making it for family holidays and other community gatherings. Rex enjoyed the challenge of various construction projects and was instrumental in the design and additions to his church. If anything needed ?fixing?, he was always willing and able to help. His experience with heavy equipment made him a likely candidate for church and community building projects. Another favorite pass time was visiting with his friends and neighbors at Arnold?s Restaurant in Lone Star early in the morning having coffee with his and catching up on current events. Mrs. Fowler always made sure the birthday celebrations were special for the ?coffee crew?.
Rex could be described as a true humanitarian. Webster?s definition of humanitarian is ?devoted to the well-being of all human beings?. That definition truly sums up his life which has been devoted to serving God, his family, and others. ?Well done, thou good and faithful servant.?
We would like to express our appreciation for the prayers, phone calls, and visits. Also, to Sandy Doddy, PrimeCare Hospice and Jordan Home Health for their dedication and kindness in caring for our Dad.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to South Union Missionary Baptist Church, the Scottish Rite Hospital for children in Waco, or a charity or organization of your choosing.

Harry T. Robbins - Farmer in several districts of the State successively
Harry T. Robbins follows in ancestral occupation, for both his parents and his grandparents in the male line were farmers. At his establishment near Woodstown, he raises a varied crop under intensive farming, and finds time from his agricultural duties to have a word in most public affairs.
Mr. Robbins was born at Commissioners Pike, Pilesgrove Township, Salem County, on October 16, 1877, son of William and Mary F. (Tolman) Robbins. His paternal grandparents, Van Room and Margaretta (Blackwell) Robbins, natives of Monmouth County, engaged in farming at Swedesboro for many years, the grandfather living there until his death in 1887 in his eighty-fifth year. The next in line, William, moved to Salem County to establish a farm, buying the Charles Clark estate, and developing the property to a high degree of production. His place was especially famous for the fine horses which were raised there, including Goldsmith Volunteer, Yorktown Belle, and Young Volunteer.
William and Mary Robbins were the parents of six children: Van Room, William, Alberta, Blanche, Harry T., and Leon. Harry T. Robbins attended the public schools in Salem County, and remained until his twenty-third year upon the family farm at Commissioners Pike. He then farmed on shares for one year, and at the termination of this arrangement, bought the Thomas R. Cole Farm, adjoining the one upon which he had been born and brought up. This farm he has owned and operated successfully ever since. He has one hundred and sixty-five acres, upon which he raises the roughage for his herd of thirty-five graded Holsteins in addition to extensive acreage in tomatoes, white potatoes, corn, and other crops.
This farm which he now directs is a worthy successor of those previously held by members of the Robbins family. His work upon it, and his willingness to assume public duties, have made him a prominent member of this community. A Democrat in politics, Mr. Robbins has been a member of the board of education for twenty-three years, and of the election board for only three years less. His opinion is often sought in local affairs, and his support for any program directed to the public welfare is a foregone conclusion.
On April 12, 1900, Harry T. Robbins married Jennie R. Bassett of Upper Pittsgrove Township, daughter of Benjamin and Mary Louis Bassett. They are members of the Daretown Baptist Church, and are the parents of nine children: 1. Mable, a graduate of the New Jersey State Normal School; 2. B. Bassett, a farmer; 3. Agnes L., a graduate of Miss Ilman's School; 4. Alice, also a graduate of girls' school; 5. Mary; 6. Dorothy; 7. William; 8. Helen; 9. Edward. All of the children graduated from the local high school.
