| 49155 | The Twice-a-week Providence Enterprise Tuesday, November 5, 1929 James P. Bassett (Smith, Claycombe) Curtis Coffman (Plemmons, Kirkwood, Gass) Bassett and Coffman Accidentally Killed James P. Bassett, mine inspector of the West Kentucky Coal Company of this place, was instantly killed Monday afternoon about 1 o'clock at the Shamrock mines and Curtis Coffman was so seriously injured that he died nine hours later in the Walker hospital, Evansville, to which he had been rushed for treatments. From information on hand it appears that Bassett had started out to go on an inspection of the mine shafts and had boarded a "trip" section of cars used underground, accompanied by Coffman. While riding along the tunnel they were crushed by the head-on rush of another train of cars that had become disconnected and were running wild. Coffman is thought to have escaped instant death by jumping from the cars he was driving as the runaway "trip" and his own crashed. Bassett was caught between the cars and crushed to death. Both men were married. Bassett being survived by his widow, Nannie, two sons, James and William, and a daughter, Marjorie, all of this place; his mother, Mrs. Gus A. Bassett; three brothers, J.C. Bassett of Earlington, T.P. Bassett of Spokane, Washington, and Lawrence Bassett of this place; a sister, Mrs. Curtis Smith, of Benton, Ill. Mr. Bassett will be remembered as having been a candidate for sheriff at the August primary, was a mason, and a very prominent citizen of this community. Funeral services were conducted at the Presbyterian church at 2 o'clock Tuesday. Rev. J.F. Claycombe, former pastor of the Presbyterian church here, conducted services. Interment was made at the Big Hill cemetery, with burial being conducted by his brother masons. Coffman was only 23 years of age and was employed as a miner at the Shamrock mines. He is survived by his widow and his parents, Mr. and Mrs. R.L. Coffman; three sisters, Mrs. Ross Plemmons, Mrs. George Plemmons, and Mrs. James Kirkwood; three brothers, Denver, Chester and Cris all of this place. Funeral services are to be conducted at the Victory Baptist church Wednesday afternoon at 1 o'clock with Rev. George H. Gass conducting the services. Interment will be made at Lakeview cemetery. Hopkins County, Kentucky Volume I - 1988 Gustavus Adolphus Bassett Gustavus Adolphus "Gus" Bassett, youngest child of Elijah Bassett and his wife, Mary O'Rear Pearl, was born 11 Aug. 1855 in Bracken County, KY. He came to Hopkins County when he was four months old. When he was nine, his father, who had served as sheriff in Bracken County, was shot and killed. Four months later his mother died and Gus then lived with his sister, Sallie Bassett Williams. On 25 Feb. 1879, Gus married Misher Izora "Odie" Cunningham, daughter of Joseph Misher Cunningham and Mary Louis Payne. Both of her parents died when she was very young and she was reared by uncle, Thomas Buford "Uncle Bufe" Payne. For the first year of their marriage, Gus and Odie lived on the Williams farm northeast of Providence but then bought their own farm on Clear Creek in Hopkins County. It was here that they reared their children and lived for the next 48 years until his death on 10 Mar. 1929. Later Odie moved to Benton, IL, and lived with her daughter. She died there 7 Jan. 1961 at the age of 102. Their children were James Payne, Edgar Karr, Jeff, John Corliss, Karr Pearl, Beryl O'Rear and Lawrence Rogers Bassett. James Payne Bassett was born 12 Dec. 1879 and married Nancy Macy Baker on 25 Sept. 1906. They had three children: James Baker, William Kerr, and Marjorie. James Payne Bassett owned a livery stable in Providence and later had coal mines in Webster and Hopkins Counties. He was killed in a mine accident on 4 Nov. 1929. The next two little boys of Gus and Odie, "Little Eddie" and Jeff, died young. They then had twin boys: John Corliss "Bill" and Karr Pearl Bassett, born 20 Sept. 1891. After World War I army service in the A.E.F., Bill worked for many years for St. Bernard and West Kentucky Coal Companies. Thereafter he served as Postmaster in Earlington for over twenty years. He was commander of the Earlington American Legion Post and also served as District Commander of the Legion. He was one of the founders and served as president of the Brown Meadow Lake Fishing Club. He married Elizabeth Zona Hearin on 7 July 1925. She began teaching school when she was a teenager and received her degree many years later from West Kentucky University after attending summer school almost every year. She was a devoted and talented teacher and served in the Earlington schools for most of her 50 year teaching career. Bill died on 20 Aug. 1965 and Zona on 17 Feb. 1985. They had no children. Karr married Mina Marie Van Metre on 8 Jul 1917 and they spent most of their married life in Washington state. He was Tax Assessor in Spokane for many years. They had four children: Winston Adolphus, Elanor Izora, Karlene Marie and Bette June. Karr died 24 Nov. 1963. Beryl O'Rear Bassett, the only daughter of Gus and Odie, was born 28 Dec. 1893. She married on 5 Sept. 1914 Curtis E. Smith, who visited Providence as a member of the Benton, IL, Silver Cornet Band that played at the county fair. He became a lawyer and she worked in his abstract office for many years. They had two daughters, Berylene Bassett and Sue Carol. Beryl now lives with her daughter, Sue Smith Hawkins in Mobile, AL. Lawrence Rogers Bassett was born on 23 Aug. 1896 and married Pauline Bullock on 3 Apr. 1923. They lived near Henderson, KY, where he had a large farm a few miles east of town. Lawrence died on 9 Feb. 1967. They had two children: Emma Jean and Robert Lawrence. Gus Bassett was a hard worker and a good farmer; however, he managed to utilize his love of hunting and fishing and his gregarious nature to supplement the income from the usual corn and tobacco crops. His fish nets on Weirs and Clear Creeks provided fish to "peddle" in town along with hams, vegetables and his famous watermelons and cantaloupes. He enjoyed socializing with his adult customers but he delighted even more having some "Penny" melons for poor eager children who followed his wagon. The Gus Bassett place on the Dalton Road was known for its hospitality. The annual family reunion brought Cunningham, Payne, Rogers, Smith, Tapp and other kin from Madisonville, Manitou and Nebo, but the Bassett farm was known best as a year-round gathering place for young people. The boys came to hunt and fish with the Bassett boys, and Beryl's friends came to see the boys. Gus Bassett was a tall, strong man and his wife, Odie, was a tiny but energetic woman. She stayed busy cooking and feeding the company that was always there to enjoy the good food of the family dinner table. When she died at 102, people said that she was proof that "Hard work never killed anyone." Gus was known not only to his children and grandchildren as "Pap" but also to the many young folk who made the Bassett farm their second home. He always said he had the best neighbors in the world: these included two land-owning Negro families, the Bishops and Rices. Gus Bassett, a Democrat, a Mason and a Baptist, was an honest, honorable, generous and hospitable man who, like his wife, Odie, enjoyed living and sharing. Submitted by Wm. | 49156 | The Tyrone Constitution, Ireland, Friday, 5 July 1907 Death of Mr. Edward Bassett, Omagh. We deeply regret to have to announce the death of Mr. Edward Bassett, a well-known and highly respected resident in the town of Omagh for many years, which took place on Wednesday afternoon. For some years back he had been in failing health, and during the past eighteen months had been constantly under medical treatment. Notwithstanding, it was no generally known that the end was so near, the news of it came as a shock to the many friends of the family. Deceased came to Omagh 27 years ago, and was managing clerk to Mr. T.C. Dickie, with whom he was employed during all the time he was in Omagh, remaining in the same position with Messrs. Dickie and Carson after the partnership had been entered into. A capable business man, he was respected not only in the town of Omagh, but throughout the county, and numerous were the anxious inquiries made by country people during his long and tedious illness. Mr. Bassett at one time took a very active part in connection with the Omagh Young Men?s Christian Literary Association, and many a stirring debate he had with the prominent townsmen of that day ? Mr. Nathaniel Carson, Mr. Quaile, and others. In public matters deceased was at all times deeply interested, and was ever ready to lend his aid when it was required. A fluent speaker, he had the mastery of every subject he dealt with. As and Urban Councillor he served for three years, but he was perhaps better known in his connection with technical education. A member of the Tyrone County Committee of Technical Education and the Omagh Committee, he died what he could to secure for young people a thorough education. Not many months ago he travelled to Dungannon to attend a meeting of the County Committee, although he was not then really fit to be out of bed. In fact he had Omagh?s welfare at heart, and he thought no one could do too much in furthering its interests. He particularly enjoyed to recall the early days when the old Christian Literary Association was in vogue, and received fresh inspiration from the recollection of the arguments so finely expressed by those who had gone before him. Deceased was a member of the First Omagh Presbyterian Church. He was predeceased about twelve years ago by his wife, and since then his eldest daughter devoted her life to the care of the family, nobly sacrificing herself in tending to her father through his lengthy illness, and in acting as a second mother to her brothers and sisters. During these twelve years Mrs. Dickie, who was present at Mrs. Bassett?s death, has been a kind, generous, and unfailing friend of the family. She was especially thoughtful about Mr. Bassett in his long illness, and he greatly appreciated her kindness and sympathy, and made very touching reference to it the day before he died in expressing his gratitude. Deceased is survived by two sons (one of whom is in Canada) and six daughters, and the utmost sympathy is extended to them in their terrible bereavement. It should also be mentioned that Dr. Duncan, who devotes the greatest skill and attention to his patients,, was present both before and at the last, and everything a medical man could possibly do was accomplished by him. The funeral will take place at 10 o?clock tomorrow (Saturday) to Cappagh Burying ground. | 49160 | The Union Leader, April 6, 2014 Anthony Salvatore Carnovale DERRY - Anthony Salvatore Carnovale, 67, of Derry, died April 5, 2014.Tony was born in Priverno, Italy, June 12, 1946, to Eulalia and Salvatore Carnovale. He was the oldest of eight children. In 1955, his family immigrated to the United States and settled in Boston. In Boston, Tony worked hard to learn English and graduate public school. In 1966, after graduating high school, Tony became a U.S. citizen and was drafted by the United States Army. He was a Vietnam vet and was proud to be an American. He took becoming a citizen very seriously and was grateful for all that he had in this country. After the war, Tony went on to college. He attended Lyndon State College and Cape Cod Community College. He earned a Bachelor of Science and a Master's degree in education. During this time, he met the love of his life, Gail Bassett. They married, settled on Cape Cod, Mass., and had two daughters, Tracy and Jennifer. Tony dedicated his life to teaching and coaching. His passion was mentoring the youth in the communities in which he lived. He used his life experiences to help others grow in positive ways. Tony was extremely generous and loyal; he gave more than he had. Tony began his teaching career at the Cape Cod Technical High School, where he taught social studies and coached basketball. He was the teacher/coach that people were drawn to. He became a mentor, friend and advocate for struggling kids and helped them become strong, independent adults. Many former Cape Cod, Mass., students and athletes visited Tony until his final days. After teaching on the Cape, Tony moved his family to Derry, where he began a 31- year tenure at Pinkerton Academy. There he led the boys varsity basketball team to four state championships and won two state titles. He continued his legacy as being the teacher who understood kids and could connect with some of the hardest to reach students. He was loved and admired by the youth within the Derry community. He started basketball camps, directed the town recreation program and built a basketball empire in Derry. Tony spent nearly 10 years as the television anchor of New Hampshire High School Sports Review on WNDS. He then went on to Goffstown and New England College where he continued with his legacy of influencing basketball programs. In 2010 Tony was inducted into the New Hampshire Coaches Hall of Fame and was formally recognized for his intrinsic talent as a coach that many aspire to be. He continues to be highly respected and admired for his superb coaching abilities. Tony was fascinated with other cultures. Russia was particularly close to his heart. He spent many years traveling and visiting friends there. He provided the opportunity for Pinkerton students to travel to Russia for both a basketball and cultural experience. In addition to Russia, Tony traveled to over 35 countries. Tony was an exceptional father and grandfather. He enjoyed boasting about the accomplishments of his daughters and grandsons. True to his generous spirit, he showered them with love and attention. And true to his loyal nature, spending time with them was most important to him. | 49163 | The Union, Nevada County, California Local News, November 6, 2013 Former Nevada City resident ?Bud? Bassett remembered By Staff Writer Jennifer Terman Some friends of Howard ?Bud? Bassett, a former longtime resident of Nevada City, were saddened to hear word of his death in a Mogollon, N.M. flash flood in late September. Bassett, who died at the age of 83, lived in Nevada County from the 1970s until the 1990s, said his former neighbor and close friend Marilyn Tubbs of Nevada City. While in Nevada County, Bassett partook in his life?s passion of history and antiques, Tubbs said. He bought the inventory in old mercantile stores and operated a mail-order antique business. ?He would buy the inventory, a lot of old vintage historical signs and advertising. That was his big passion,? she said, adding the Smithsonian had called to ask about acquiring his compilations. ?He had one of the country?s most spectacular collections.? Bassett could be seen at obscure antique trade shows that would require traveling about 1,200 miles away, Tubbs said. ?He had a real passion for old mining towns,? she said. ?I think that was why he liked Nevada County. He loved the history of this old area here and had a real big passion for it.? Though Bassett had not lived locally for decades, he did keep in touch with Nevada County residents, Tubbs said. ?He was a very modest man and a lot of people knew him,? she said. Upon word of his death, Tubbs said she was ?devastated,? especially taking into consideration what a strong and active man he was, who seemed years younger than his actual age. ?I had no idea he was in his 80s. I really thought of him as in his early 70s,? she said, adding he was shot down in a helicopter twice in Vietnam and also underwent a bout of cancer in the 1980s, when he was told he only had six months to live. ?He wouldn?t take no for an answer and sought out another doctor,? Tubbs said. ?He survived all of that.? Bassett moved to Prescott, Ariz., with his wife, Sally, in 1992, according to the Arizona-based Prescott Daily Courier. The Daily Courier included that Bassett was born in Berkeley and received a bachelor?s degree in paleontology from University of California, Berkeley and his master?s degree in fisheries biology at the University of Colorado at Ft. Collins. The paper also includes that Bassett earned 23 medals during his tour with the Arizona Army Guard as a Chinook helicopter pilot from 1966 to 1967. He came home with 15 Air Medals, two Air Medals with a ?V? for valor, one Distinguished Flying Cross for Heroism, two Bronze Stars, two Army commendation medals, and a Vietnamese Cross for Gallantry. Bassett?s survivors include his daughters, Jan Wardle and her husband, Scott, and Sally Day; six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. The family suggests donations in Bassett?s name to United Animal Friends, P.O. Box 11133, Prescott AZ 86304 or the Yavapai Humane Society, 1625 Sundog Ranch Road, Prescott AZ 86301. | Bassett, Howard Marion (I46202)

| 49189 | The Vermont watchman, Montpelier, March 26, 1903 The Late Alden Bass Brief Sketch of His Dramatic Career High Tribute to His Personal Character The following tribute to the late Alden Bass is taken from the New York Dramatic Mirror: Alden Bass, the actor, who this season was a member of Sylvia Lynden?s company playing the Gay Lord Quex, died in St. Joseph?s Hospital, Milwaukee, on February 19. For some time he had been suffering from a malady of the stomach, but he insisted upon playing until his condition made such an effort impossible. On the night of February 15, he played his role of Sri Chichester Frayne, though suffering greatly, in Milwaukee. The next day he was removed to the hospital, and three days later he passed away. The immediate cause of his death was heart failure. During this comparatively brief career on the stage Alden Bass won considerable honor as an actor, and beyond that ? and greater than that ? he won the esteem and most cordial regard of every one with whom he came into personal contact. He was a man of dignified, noble mind, of high ambitions and of gentle breeding. His attitude toward his art was that of a sincere disciple, and in his relations with his fellow players he bore himself ever as a kindly, thoughtful gentleman. Alden Bass came of an old and prominent New England family, and was born in Vermont about forty years ago. His relatives were not in sympathy with his dramatic ambitions, and during the years of his early manhood he devoted himself to other pursuits. During that period, however, he was a student at the Boston School of Oratory and managed to prepare himself excellently for a stage career. Seven or eight years ago, after appearing with small companies, he made his first important essay as an actor in the company of the late James A. Herne. For several seasons he played under the direction of that master of realism, and profited much by his instruction. His Squire Andrews in Shore Acres, was a notably good performance. Later he made a personal success as Simkins in Vermont, and three years ago he played a season on the road under Frederick G. Berger?s management, in the late Sol Smith Russell?s role of Noah Vale in the Poor Relation. He also appeared in Peaceful Valley with great success. This season he entered a different line of work in the Gay Lord Quex, and was genuinely successful as Sir Chichester as he had been in portraying quaint American characters. On the day following the death of Mr. Bass, his brother, Dr. G.E. Bass of Chicago, went to Milwaukee and took the remains to Williamstown, Vt., where they were interred in the family lot. | Bass, Joel Alden (I1437)

| 49198 | The Victoria Advocate, Texas, Thursday, November 15, 2012 Mildred Vorpahl Baass ? VISITATION: 6-7 p.m. Friday at Rosewood Funeral Chapel ? SERVICE: 10 a.m. Saturday at Our Lady of Victory Cathedral ? BURIAL: Will follow at Catholic Cemetery No. 2 She lived through the Great Depression, served behind the front lines in World War II, was widowed, remarried and a mother to two daughters. And Mildred Vorpahl Baass, poet laureate of Texas from 1993 to 1995, wrote about it all. "The world is so beautiful. There is poetry everywhere. And I am from the school of poetic expression that feels poetry should express beauty, should not be base or vulgar," she said in the Stoneflower Literary Journal, Volume 1. Baass, of Victoria, died Nov. 4 at age 95, still writing poetry, said her daughter, Nancy Baass. She wrote poems in a variety of styles, from free verse to sonnets, and wrote on multiple subjects from the horrors of war to sea shells on Padre Island. "That is what poetry she said was all about, was trying to reach people and to express experiences that we all share, and to put it into words that are poetic," her daughter said. Nancy Baass said they traveled all over Texas and the United States after she was named poet laureate, living up to her mother's slogan, "Have poem, will travel." "We called it our poetic great adventure," her daughter said. "We went all over Texas - towns we had never heard of." She said they even bought a Winnebago to make life on the road easier, going as far away as Pennsylvania for Baass to speak. Carol Sowa, Baass' oldest daughter, said her mother's death will leave a gap in the family. "She was a wonderful, vibrant person that always had a sense of wonder and excitement for a variety of things in life," Sowa said. "When we went on family vacations, we always had to stop at every historical site ... and explore things." Budd Powell Mahan, a former president of the Poetry Society of Texas, said Baass, also a member, left her mark on Texas poetry. "I just clearly remember her at some of the banquets I went to because she was just so exuberant when she would win. She would just jump up and down and run up to the microphone - it was so wonderful," Mahan said. Baass was expected to go to the society's annual awards banquet Nov. 10, and Mahan said she was missed. "People just kept speaking tributes to her, it wasn't even planned or anything ... And that just doesn't always happen. We have had really important people die, and it didn't impact members as much as Mildred's passing. I think she meant a lot to a lot of people," Mahan said. Mahan said Baass never stopped writing poetry and was still involved in the Poetry Society of Texas. "I think that is why people live to be old, because they don't give up living. They keep thinking about, 'What is the next thing?' And she was always thinking about the next thing," Mahan said. Nancy Baass said her mother lived up to her goal of spreading poetry throughout Texas. "I want to encourage and promote poetry in Texas. We live in a great state that has great diversity. Although our state is known for cowboy poetry, we don't want people to think that's the only poetry in Texas. There are other kinds, too," Baass said in a 1994 Advocate article. | Vorpahl, Mildred (I37)
