Wickenburg mourns Passing of Bill Bass

Wickenburg's most famous citizen, Bill Bass, died Friday, Feb. 20 at his home on Bass Hill overlooking the town he had loved for 55 years.

He was 80.

He was born in Williams, Ariz., on July 26, 1900 - 73 miles away from being the first white child born on the rim of the Grand Canyon.

Bill came of age exploring the Grand Canyon with his father Capt. William Wallace Bass, who blazed the first trails into the Canyon's wilderness.

At the age of 26, in 1926, Bill came to Wickenburg, where he was involved in various business pursuits. Back at the Grand Canyon in 1940 as a tour guide, he met his wife Lenore. They were married in 1941.

After a four-year absence from Wickenburg during the war, he returned and built the La Siesta Motel and Kelly's Cafe.

Then he began his life-long hobby of photography. He soon established himself as one of the finest photographers of desert scenery and wildlife subjects - with his works appearing in several issues of Arizona Highways.

Every night for 24 straight years, he presented free slide programs on Arizona's beauty for all the guests in the Wickenburg area in his famous "Cliff Room" at the La Siesta Motel.

History of Portage County, Ohio (1885)
William Bassett, Jr., farmer, P.O. Kent, was born in Ravenna Township, this county, May 22, 1829; son of William and Eloisa (Welton) Bassett, natives of Oxford, New Haven County, Connecticut, former born September 18, 1794, latter August 4, 1798. They came to this county in 1817 and located in Rootstown Township where they lived about eight months, then moved to Franklin Township and settled on the place known as the Pritchard farm. They afterward exchanged the farm for property now occupied by the mother of our subject, which was then considered the poorest portion of the township. The farm comprises 263 acres of land, 200 of which are under cultivation. William Bassett, Sr., was a veteran of the war of 1812, Captain of the militia in Franklin Township in early times, and generally known as Captain Bassett. After his settlement in Franklin Township he taught a night school for two months, said to be the first school in the township. He had four children: WIlliam Jr., Harriet (deceased), Edward W., in Ravenna, and Horace P., in Warren. He was a thorough-going, pushing business man and at the time of the building of the Ohio Canal he contracted to furnish the stone for the locks. He died October 21, 1878, at the age of eighty-four; his widow, aged eighty-six, still resides on the old homestead. Our subject was reared in Franklin Township, this county, where he received a common school education and has always followed farming as an occupation. He was married, May 9, 1854, to Esther A., daughter of Deacon Barber Clark, of Franklin Township, this county, who died May 8, 1879, at the age of forty-eight years. Mr. Bassett is a member of the Congregational Church, with which he has been identified since 1859. He is a F.&A.M.; in politics a Republican.

William Bassett Sr. left Oxford about 1 April 1817 and moved to Rootstown, Portage County, Ohio. During the War of 1812 he served in Seymour Knapp's Company of Connecticut Militia.

Biographical History of Northeastern Ohio (1893)
Horace P. Bassett, formerly proprietor of one of the leading livery stables in Warren, Ohio, is a native of Portage County, this State, born June 17, 1838.
William and Eloise (Welton) Bassett, the parents of H.P., were natives of Connecticut. William Bassett drove an ox team from Connecticut to Ohio as early as 1817, and settled on a tract of wild land. Here he cut away the forest and developed a farm of 266 acres, and on this farm he passed the rest of his life, and died at the age of eighty-five years. He was a prominent man in this county, and for some time served as Captain of the Militia. He was in the war of 1812, having entered the service when he was sixteen years old. The Bassett family are descended from an old English family that settled in New England at an early day. William Bassett was a prominent member of the Freesoil party, and he also took considerable interest in the educational affairs of his day. He was a man of great prowess, was a great wrestler, and was known all over the country for his remarkable physique. His wife died at the age of eight-seven years. She was a member of the Episcopal Church. Of their four children we make record as followws: William, a farmer near Kent, Ohio, was for many years a railroad conductor, and is now prominently identified with local affairs; Harriet, deceased; Edward W., a railroad conductor for many years, was employed as express manager at the time of his death, which occured at Kent in 1887; and Horace P., with whose name we begin this sketch.
Horace P. Bassett remained on his father's farm until he was twenty years old, receiving his education in the public schools and at Hiram College. At the age of twenty he accepted a position with Harris, Hanford & Co., dealers in blank books, papers, etc., and for two years was employed as their traveling salesman. In 1860 he came to Warren, and was soon afterward employed as traveling salesman for James B. Dunlap, grocer, in whose employ he remained three years. He was then employed by another grocery firm, Anderson & Rupps, with whom he continued until 1864. That year he engaged in the livery business, succeeding A.S. Robins, which business he continued up to May, 1893. In 1873, he combned undertaking with his livery business, and carried on both until January, 1893, when he sold the undertaking department to Taylor & Pierce. Mr. Bassett is an authority on horses, his opinion frequently being sought and always valued. He owns a fine stallion, known far and near as "Black Allie".
Mr. Bassett also devotes considerable time to looking after his farm, in Portage county, of 340 acres. He and his brother William own the old home place. He is also interested somewhat in the life-insurance business, representing the United States Life Insurance Company.
Politically, Mr. Bassett is a Republican. Fraternally, he is a member of the A.F.&A.M. Erie Lodge, No. 3; I.O.O.F., No. 29; K. of P., No. 30; and American Mechanics, No. 4. He is Past Grand in the I.O.O.P. and Past Chancellor of the K. of P.
Mr. Bassett was married in 1860, to Miss Justine L., daughter of Washington Brewster, a native of Summit county, Ohio. They have had four children, three of whom are living: Jennie B., Charles H. and Helen J. William is deceased. Jennie B. is the wife of E.W. Christy of Cleveland, Ohio, manager of the United States Life Insurance Company.

49486 The Will of John Bassett late of the Parish of St. Enoder in the Parish of Cornwall Farmer deceased who died 11 June 1858 at St. Enoder aforesaid was proved at Bodmin by the oath of Richard Bassett of St. Columb Major in the said County Farmer the son and Joanna Williams (wife of James Williams of St. Enoder) the daughter.

Bath Chronicle and Weekly Gazette, Thursday 25 September 1856
An Extraordinary Man

John Bassett, a farmer, of Polmenna, in the parish of St. Enoder, who has lived to see 91 summers, has this year stood in the harvest field as usual, and, with a small reaping-hook, has cut down no less than 190 sheaves of wheat in the short space of 7 hours, and at the same rate he has continued through the harvest. When in the prime of his life, he has been known to cut and bind 200 fagots of furze in one day; also to walk ten miles a-day, and cut and bind one thousand fagots a week. He can see to read small print with out the help of any sort of glass; in short his strength and vigour seem to be unabated, and every faculty perfect.

49488 The will of Peter Shafer is dated 1 Nov 1836.

Portrait and Biographical Record of Guernsey County, Ohio (1895)
C.O. Owen & Co.
Garrett Bassett is the popular and efficient Postmaster of New Comerstown (Ohio), and is now filling his second term in that office. He was born in Albany County, New York, June 16, 1827 and is the son of Nicholas and Maria (Shafer) Bassett, also natives of the Empire State.
The father of our subject was a farmer all his life. He in turn was the son of Michael Bassett, who was a native of England. The maternal grandfather of Mr. Bassett was born on the Atlantic while his parents were crossing from Germany to America. Nicholas and Maria became the parents of ten children, of whom we make the following mention: Michael died in Coshocton County, Ohio, in 1889. Ann, who died in 1891, was the wife of John Davis. Peter died in New York in 1892. John is living in Coshocton County. Simon is a farmer in California. Catherine married Elijah Dooling, and died in 1886. Cornelius departed this life in 1885. Gertrude is now Mrs. Alonzo Sibly and lives in Illinois. Sherman is mining in Caldwell County, Missouri; and Garrett is our subject. The family moved from the Empire State to Coshocton County in 1834, and here the parents died, aged respectively eighty-eight and eighty-nine years.
Our subject was well educated, and when a lad of seventeen years returned to his native state and began working in the United States arsenal at Troy. He was there a little over a year, however, when he resigned his position he engaged with James Gould in the car-shops, where he worked for five or six years. At the end of that time he went to Cleveland, where he was similarly employed for a year, when he determined to go to Detroit, Michigan. His stay there was of short duration, and his next move found him at the World's Fair City, where he obtained profitable employment and stayed for six years. Returning East, he lived in New York City for one year; he later returned to Chicago, and in 1858 located in New Comerstown where he opened a wagon shop and conducted a good business.
During the late war our subject served as a member of Company H, one Hundred and Seventy-eighth Ohio Infantry, and saw service eleven months and twenty three days. He was mustered out at the close of the war at Charlotte, N.C. reaching home July 9, 1865. He lost no time after regaining his health, but went to work in the old shop and continued without interruption until he was appointed Postmaster in 1888 under Cleveland. At the expiration of three years he worked at his trade, until September 1892, when he was again called upon to serve the people in the capacity of Postmaster.
Mr. Bassett was married, May 11, 1857, to Miss Maria Lacey, and to them were born eight children. Arthur lives in California, being a proprietor of a hotel in Sacramento; Armenia is a wife of Joseph Duff, of New Comerstown; Hershel also resides in the above city; Marcia is now Mrs. William Smalley, of Missouri; Peoria is the wife of George Wallace, of Pennsylvania; and William and Robert are at home. Socially our subject is a Mason, and in politics is Democratic.
