Mildred Hayes Bass
Aug. 10, 1918 ? Aug. 1, 2019

LUCAMA ? Mildred Hayes Bass, 100, passed away Thursday. Her funeral services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Monday at Joyner's Funeral Home, 4100 Raleigh Road Parkway, Wilson. Interment will follow in Bass Family Cemetery, Lucama. The Rev. Dr. De Wayne Eakes and the Rev. Kelley Smart will officiate.

The family will receive friends Monday one hour prior to the service at Joyner's Funeral Home, Wilson.

Mama was the youngest of 15 children. She loved to cook, especially chicken pastry, fried chicken and her famous chocolate pies. She was a member of Little Rock Original Free Will Baptist Church and always took an entire meal to homecoming and it made her so very happy when Pastor Eakes bragged on those chocolate pies! She would always make amazing treats for all our school class parties. Mama and Daddy both worked hard in the garden and spent a lot of the summer canning and freezing vegetables. She made a lot of our clothes and taught us how to sew. In those days, we had sewing and cooking classes at school and we thought it was funny that so many of the girls knew nothing about either. Mama loved flowers and working in the yard. She also believed in having every square inch of dirt in the yard filled with a flower or bush. Her baby doll, which has been placed beside her, is 96 years old. Her papa gave it to her and told her to take good care of it because she might not ever get another one. She was 5 years old and this was her most prized possession. Every time we gave Mama something to wear as a gift, she wouldn't wear it. She wanted to "save it." We found many boxed gifts under her bed when I moved her to my house from Judy's. We guess the Great Depression was a life-changing event for her. She saved everything ? and I do mean everything. But when she dressed to leave the house for church and other special events, she was stylin' and profilin'. When we were growing up, we were taught beyond any doubt right from wrong. Mama would cook a big dinner every Sunday and all the family gathered around the table for fellowship and the best food ever. Now they are gathered around God's table rejoicing and being the happiest ever. We are so thankful for that and when we will see them again.

Survivors include three daughters, Judy Meeks, and husband, Ray, Rebecca Watson, and husband, Walt and Jane Evans, all of Wilson; five granddaughters, Pamela Cason, and husband, Mike, of Garner, Amy Wise, and husband, Steve, of Maple Shade, New Jersey, Jennifer Wade, and husband, Russell, of Goldsboro, Michele Grigg, and husband, Alex, of Gainesville, Georgia and Amanda Cropper, and husband, Jesse, of Clayton; and 10 great-grandchildren, Blake Carson, and wife, Hannah, Tyler Cason, Christian Cason, Mackenzie Wade, Caleb Wade, Benjamin Grigg, Elizabeth Summers, and husband, David, Noah Wise, Burgen Robertson and Riley Cropper.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 63 years, Benjamin Bass, who passed away in 2003; parents, Jesse Thomas and Betty Sullivan Hayes; and 14 siblings.

Condolences may be directed to Joyner's Funeral Home at www.joyners.net.

Obituary

?A servant of the living God is dead!
His errant hath been well and early done,
And early hat he gone to his reward.
He shall come no more forth, but to his sleep
Hath silently lain down, and so shall rest.

On last Sunday morning, October 15th, 1882k while the bells were ringing the advent of another Lord?s day and bidding God?s people to assemble, there passed away the spirit of one of Windsor?s most worth citizens ? man revered by all.
Edwin Bass, son of Lawrenc Bass, was born in Boone County, Mo., February 14th, 1927. In early life he united with the M.E. Church, South, was an earnest and conscientious worker, and at the time of his death was Recording Steward and Superintendent of the Sabbath School of that organization here. He began business in Old Nashville, Mo., at the age 18, and with the exception of about a year continued mercantile pursuits until death. From Nashville he went Claysville, Mo., where he formed a partnership, Bass & Smith. After a period of two or three years they started a branch house at Ashland, whither he removed. Returning to Claysville he built a fine residence, and farmed extensively until 184. Selling out to his brother-in-law, he removed to farm in Callaway county, opposite Jefferson City, bought a stock of goods and sent them to Sedalia in charge of J. M. Burress. In the summer of 1865 he remo9ved to Windsor, and bought what is known as the Bass House. In the fall he removed his stock of goods from Sedalia here, and engaged in business at the present stand, with R.W. Major which continued until 1866. Sold to Aaron Senders in 1867, re-opened in 1868, and in the fall sold to Tryon Bros. Then removed to his farm two miles east of town. In the spring of 1869 engaged in business with A.J. Bass and John S. Kelly, under firm name of A.J. bass & Co., which partnership continued eighteen months, when the firm changed to Bass & Kelly, A.J. bass withdrawing. This firm continued until the present time, building their commodious business house in 1874. In the spring of 1878 he was elected mayor of our city, which position he filled creditably.
During a business life of thirty-seven years there was no act but of honor and the strictest integrity. As a Christian he was humble and devout; as a citizen he was most exemplary.
He was married twice, his first wife living only a short time after marriage. he had one child by his first wife, which died quite young. He then married a sister of his deceased wife, and she survives him.
The funeral ceremonies were conducted by Rev. E. Springer, from the family residence, and his remains were followed by a large number of our citizens to Laurel Oak Cemetery, where was deposited one of nature?s noblemen.

?Would ye bewail our brother? He hat gone
To Abraham?s Bosom. He shall no more thirst,
Nor Hunger, but forever in the eye,
Holy and meek, of Jesus, he may look,
Unchided, and untempted and unstained.
Would he bewail our brother? He had gone
To sit down with the prophets by the clear
And crystal waters; he hat gone to list
Isaiah?s harp and David?s, and to walk
With Enoch, and Elijah, and the host
Of the just men made prefect, He shall bow
At Gabriel?s hallelujah, and unfold
The scroll of the apocalypse with John,
And talk of Christ with Mary, and go back
To the last supper, and the garden prayer
With the beloved disciples. He shall hear
The story of the incrassation told
By Simeon, and the Triune mystery
Bunging upon the fervent lips of Paul.?

1883 History of Henry, Missouri
Edwin Bass, b: 1827 Boone Co. MO

Edwin Bass, deceased, was born in Boone County, Missouri, February 23, 1827. His father, Lawrence Bass, originally from Baltimore, Maryland, moved to Tennessee and then to Boone County, Missouri. His mother was formerly Nancy Patten, of North Carolina. They were married in Nashville, Tennessee. Edwin was the twelfth of a family of thirteen children. After working faithfully on his father's farm until seventeen years of age, and attending school winters, he entered a store in Nashville, Missouri, where he acquired a knowledge of general trade, and after remaining here for three years or more he left and obtained a situation on a Missouri River boat as clerk, which position he held for one season. He then opened a store in Nashville, but soon sold out, and in the spring of 1850 started a store in Claysville, Boone County. His business was carried on very successfully until the fall of 1865, when he came to Windsor and before long he was a leading merchant and one of the most respected citizens here. He married Miss Mary Jane Spencer in January, 1856. She was the daughter of Perry Spencer, of Boone County, who was born in Maryland. Her mother's maiden name was Eliza Jane Wiseman, daughter of James Wiseman, of Virginia. She died in 1845. Edwin Bass, the subject of this sketch, died at his home October 15, 1882. Politically he was a Democrat, and an exemplary member of the M. E. Church, south. In 1865, upon removing his family to Windsor, he purchased the hotel property, now known as the Bass house, from Samuel Duncan. In the same year he opened a store under the firm name of Bass & Major, on the place where the present brick structure now stands. In 1866 or 1867, he purchased the entire stock and store and in 1868 he sold the stock to Aaron Saunders, who failed, and he was obliged to re-purchase it. In the fall of 1868 he disposed of the stock of goods to the Tryon Brothers, who occupied the house until 1869. During the seasons of 1868-9 he employed much of his time in improving a new farm, two miles east of Windsor, which he owned at the time of his death. In the spring of 1869 he again engaged in the mercantile business, under the firm name of A. J. Bass & Co. A. J. Bass sold his interest eighteen months later, and the new firm was formed by Edwin Bass and J. S. Kelly, Bass & Kelly. Under this new management business prospered, and in 1874 they erected the present two story brick store, 24x70, which is a fine building. Mr. Bass was a life long Christian, his membership in the Methodist Episcopal Church, south, commencing from his early boyhood. He was a zealous worker, always active in the local organizations, where he made his home, as church steward and Sunday School superintendent. He contributed liberally to all church work and the spread of the gospel. He was a friend to the poor and bestowed charity upon those in need, and in his death the county lost one of its most esteemed men, and Windsor one of its most valued citizens. Edward Spencer, brother of Mrs. Bass, came to Windsor in 1870, and has since made his home with his sister. He was born in Boone County in 1825. He learned the carpenter's trade in youth, and has ever done much in the building line. Since coming to this place he has spent much of his time in the store.
