She married Carroll Dean Bass and he preceded her in death, June 11, 1982. She later married Frank Allen Barnett. Mrs. Barnett, a retired secretary, worked with Methodist Publishing House. She was a member of Waynesboro First United Methodist Church and departed this life, Monday, July 27, 2020 at Boyd Cottages, Waynesboro, Tennessee at the age of 79 Years, 2 Months, 10 Days. Bessette, 67 of Gardner, was called to the kingdom of God on Saturday, February 4, 2012 at the St. Vincent Hospital in Worcester. David was born in Gardner on January 19, 1945, the son of the late James L. Bessette and Jennie (Sokolowski) Bessette of Gardner. He was raised and educated in Gardner and was a former Gardner High School Wildcat class of 1964. At G.H.S., he excelled in three sports: basketball, baseball and football. He was well known for his athleticism playing for the Gardner Panthers and Leominster Legion and he played football at Springfield College. After graduating from Springfield, David was an assistant coach at Leominster High School. He then took a job teaching and was head football coach at Murdock High School. David later began a career in the Insurance industry working his way up to managing the Gardner office of MetLife. David wanted to make a difference in Gardner and was involved in politics. He represented Ward 1 for a number of years and was a member of the city council. David then moved to Maine where he managed a number of offices. Dave’s love for the beach brought him to Melbourne, Florida several years ago and when he became ill, he returned to Gardner to receive long term care at Spring Valley Rehab in Worcester. In addition to his mother, David also leaves his brother, Jim Bessette and wife Linda of Fernandina Beach, Florida; a nephew, John Bessette and his family of Fitchburg, and a niece, Karen Valeri and family of Leominster. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Thursday, February 9, 2012 at 10:00 a.m. in St. Joseph's Church, 358 Pleasant St., Gardner. Burial will follow at St. Joseph's Cemetery in Gardner. Bessette Sr., 71, of 8 Maryanna Drive, a retired printer, died yesterday in his home, after a long illness. He leaves his wife of 48 years, Ruth C. (Brown) Bessette; a son, Leo Bessette Jr. of Fitchburg; two daughters, Donna Brand of Westmoreland, N.H., and Judy Keany of Braintree; three sisters, Irene McGowen of Lynn, Esther Helie of Winchendon and Janet Jenness of San Jose, Calif.; three grandchildren; nephews and nieces. He was born in Fitchburg, son of Louis and Elizabeth (Bushman) Bessette, and lived here most of his life. He was an Army veteran of World War II, serving in the European-African-Middle Eastern theater. Mr. Bessette was a printer at Rand-Whitney Corp. in Leominster for 28 years, retiring in 1982. He was a member of the Townsend Post VFW, the Eastwood Club and St. Camillus de Lellis Church. The funeral will be tomorrow in Lavery-Chartrand Funeral Home, 99 Summer St., with a prayer service at 10:30 a.m. Burial will be in St. Bernard's Cemetery. (Bassett) Quitadamo died on Tuesday, November 18, 2014 She was 85. She was born in Worcester on March 15, 1929, daughter of the late Harry D. and Lily (Olson) Bassett and graduated from the former Commerce High School. She married Ralph P. Quitadamo on July 1, 1948, with the intent of raising a large family. She succeeded. They raised 6 children in the home they shared in Worcester for over 50 years. Upon retirement, Ginny and Ralph enjoyed summers at their cottage in Oak Bluffs, MA. Ginny worked as a dining services manager for the Paul Revere Insurance Company. Virginia was active in her children's lives. She served as a Cub Scouts' Den Mother, a PTO member, a Campfire Girls Leader and sat on the Board of Directors for the Worcester chapter. She was a member of the Ladies Auxiliary of the East Side Post 201 American Legion. She loved to cook, especially for her family, and dance, especially with her husband, and was a faithful member of Hadwen Park Congregational Church and its Bible study group. In heaven, Virginia joins her husband Ralph who died April 4, 2006 and her son, Richard Quitadamo who died May 13, 2013, and her brother, Harry Bassett. She leaves her children, Ralph "Paul" Quitadamo of Worcester, Anthony Quitadamo and his wife, Kim, of Holden, Marcia E. Quitadamo of Worcester, Dianne M. | 508 | Biography of Cyrus Wilson Biographical and historical record of Adams and Wells counties, Indiana Chicago: Lewis Publishing Co., 1887, p 868-871 Cyrus Wilson, farmer, was born in Trumbull County, Ohio, a son of Gibson and Nancy A. (Harris) Wilson. The father was born in Washington County, Pennsylvania, and was a son of James and Alice Wilson. He married his wife in Ohio, and for several years they resided upon his father's farm. In 1851 Mr. amd Mrs. Gibson Wilson, with their children, Elizabeth, Cyrus, James and Nancy, made a location in Jefferson Township. The father purchased 240 acres on section 16, town 28, range 12, upon which he erected the first cabin the same year. The whole tract was covered with timber and Cyrus, our subject, although seven years of age, helped to burn the brush, and saw the logs placed in position that were to shelter the family in the new country. The nearest neighbors, William Craig, Sr., William Shaphel, Moses Louthen and William Chapman, were residents of Ossian, and the latter kept a small stock of general merchandise. Gibson Wilson was a quiet, inoffensive man who took the greatest comfort in his home and with his family. Both himself and wife were of Irish ancestry, the grandparents of both having been born in Ireland. He was on of the first road supervisors in the township, and was the overseer when the first raods leading from Ossian were cleared of underbrush. He and his wife were members of the first Presbyterian church erected in the township, and the children were reared strictly in that faith. John L., Margaret and Emma were born in this county. The death of the father occurred in 1862. His wife still survives, and is now in her sixty-eighth year. All the children but one are living, and all are married. Elizabeth became the wife of Robert Rodgers, a farmer residing on a part of the original Wilson homestead; James married Lydia Fleming, and resides in Harrison Township; Nancy A. is the wife of Isaac Allen, a son of one of the oldest residents of the county; Margaret A. married Lorenzo Anthony, a resident of Union Township; John is the husband of Mary Housel, and resides on the homestead farm. The mother lives with them and has had the pleasure of holding twenty-one grandchildren in her arms, all of whom were born in this county. She has one grea-grandchild, Clarence Smith, son of William and Mary J. (Rodgers) Smith, youngest daughter of Elizabeth and Robert Rodgers. In August, 1862, our subject enlisted in Company K, Seventy-fifth Indiana Infantry, as a private. He was soon after made Corporal, serving three years in that capacity. He was Color-Guard at the famous battles of Chickamauga, Mission Ridge, Resaca, Atlanta, and in the march to the sea he was either Color-Guard or Standard Bearer. In one of the engagements a bullet passed through his clothes without touching his body. He carried the colors of his regiment when the great military review was held at Washington, the grandest military spectacle ever seen on the American continent. He laid his colors down only when peace was declared and the preservation of the Union was acknowledged by all to be due to the noble sons of the States who had fought valiantly for three long years. After his return from the army he went to Beaver County, Pennsylvania, where he remained ten years engaged in farming. In that State he was married in 1875, to Miss Mary Frazier, of Lawrence County, and the same year the young couple returned to Indiana, where Mr. Wilson purchased his present farm. He erected his elegant house, and they are now comfortably settled within sight of Ossian. They have five children - Raymond F., John H., Nettie B., Otto O. and Chester C. Ronald Bassett, 72, of Wagoner, Okla., formerly of Corning, died July 6, 2006, at the Veterans Administrative Medical Center-Palliative Care Facility in Tuscaloosa, Ala. Powers Funeral Home, 601 New York Ave., had charge of arrangements. Ronald Keith Bassett, son of Mildred Lucille (Crow) and Merrill Clark Bassett, was born Nov. 2, 1933, in Iowa City. He graduated from Corning High School and Northwest Missouri State University in Maryville, Mo. He served in the U.S. Navy form April 1052 to April 1956. Ronald settled in the Denver, Colo. area when he first returned from the Navy where he worked for the Denver Police Department, then for the United States Marshall's office for nearly 10 years. Later, he worked for various oil companies and telephone companies working as a land agent doing land leases and sales, before retiring in 2003 while living in Wagoner, Okla. He recently moved to Leeds, Ala. He was a member of the Methodist Church in various locations. Survivors include a brother, Merrill Dean (wife Patricia) Bassett of Humboldt; two nieces, Kayla Bassett of Leeds, Ala., and Terry (Bassett) Swanson of Pace, Fla.; grand-nephews Brett and Tyler and grand-niece Arielle Swanson, all of Pace, Fla. | 511 | Danbury News Times, Connecticut, Friday, 12 Dec 1952 Mrs. Cleveland Gregory Bassett Mrs. Cleveland Gregory Bassett, 63, the former Nellie Augusta Lewis of Danbury, died at her home, 14 Gilbert Street, Ridgefield, Thursday morning. She had been in failing health for the past year and in critical condition the past few weeks. Born in Danbury July 16, 1889, she was the daughter of the late Howard and Adelle Hyatt Lewis. She married Mr. Bassett 45 years ago and they made their home in Ridgefield since that time. She was a member of St. Stephens' Church and its women auxiliary, and was a past noble grand of Mary Rebekah Lodge and a past matron of Mamanasco Chapter O.E.S. In addition to her husband, she is survived by three sons, Howard L. of Ridgefield, Francis J. of Wayne, Pennsylvania, Cleveland G. of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; a daughter Mrs. Curtiss Temper Dyke, Jr. of Ridgefield; a brother John Lewis of Danbury; five grandchildren and one nephew. The body was removed to the Tomlison Homestead, Danbury, and will repose at her home where friends may call this afternoon and evening. | 512 | DEATH CLAIMS WILLIAM BASS ------------------------- Well Know Citizen Died Tuesday Night at Home in West Broadway. -------------------------- ILL SINCE LAST SATURDAY -------------------------- Funeral Services Will Be Held at Ten-Thirty O'clock Friday Morning. William Bass, well known and highly respected resident of Shelbyville, died at his home, 370 West Broadway, at ten o'clock Tuesday night after a short illness of uremic poisoning. His death is a shock to his numerous friends in the city and county as he had only been ill since last Saturday night and the seriousness of his condition was not generally known. Mr. Bass was born in this county on July 11, 1859, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Leason Bass. He would have been seventy-three years of age next Saturday. The deceased had successfully engaged in farming and he and Mrs. Bass moved from their farm, north of the city, to Shelbyville in September of 1903. For a number of years he served as secretary of the Citizens Gas Company here. Mr. Bass had been superintendent of the Shelby County Joint Agricultural Association for the past twenty-five years and was always interested in its work. He was actively engaged in the activities of the Republican party also. The deceased was a member of the First Christian church of this city, of Shelby Lodge, no. 28, Free and Accepted Masons, and of Baldwin Cammandery, No. 2 Knights Templar. Leaves Many Relatives. The widow, Mrs. Harriet Bass, one son, Dr. F. E. Bass, of this city, a daughter, Mrs. Ernest Bassett, of Kokomo, both by a former marriage, and another daughter, Mrs. Morris Bush, of this city, survive. Mr. Bass also leaves a niece, Mrs. Frank Schoelch, of this city, who made her home with Mr. and Mrs. Bass for several years before her marriage; eight grandchildren; four great grandchildren, and two sisters, Mrs. A.E. Lisher and Mrs. Thomas Fox, both of Shelbyville. Funeral services will be held at the home Friday morning at 10:30 o'clock with the Rev. Paul E. Million, of the First Christian church, officiating. | 513 | Denver Post, Colorado, Wednesday, June 15, 1927 Former Colorado Attorney General Dead At Greeley Victor E. Keyes Succumbs To Stomach Trouble from Which He Suffered Years Victor E. Keyes Greeley, Colo., June 15.-Victor E. Keyes, attorney general of Colorado from 1918 to 1922 and for several years prior to that period assistant deputy district attorney of the Eighth district, died at his home here Tuesday afternoon from ulcer of the stomach. Keyes, who suffered from stomach trouble for several years, was taken ill in his law office Monday morning. He went home and retired to his bed, but did not consider his condition serious enough to call a physician until Tuesday, which proved too late. A postmortem examination was held to determine the actual cause of his death. The former attorney general was born at Oneonta, N.Y., Jan. 16, 1879. He came to Colorado in 1898 and attended the Colorado university preparatory school. He graduated from the Colorado State Teachers college at Greeley in 1901 and later received degrees from Colorado college and the University of Chicago. He is survived by his widow, formerly Miss Dora Ladd of Denver, and three children ? Charles, 17 years old; Ernest, 14 years old, and Betty Jane, 9 years old. He also is survived by his mother, Mrs. Elizabeth Keyes, 1869 Bannock street, Denver; a sisters, Miss Margaret Joy Keyes, member of the faculty of the Colorado State Teachers college, and two brothers, Dr. John Bassett Keyes of Chicago and Attorney Carlyle Marlett Keyes of Evanston, Ill. Keyes first met Miss Ladd while both were students at the Colorado State Teachers college. Following his retirement as attorney general of Colorado, Keyes returned to Greeley and resumed the practice of law. He was prominent and popular in legal, fraternal, club and church circles. He was a member of the Knights of Pythias, Odd Fellows and Elks and was president of the Colorado society, Sons of the American Revolution in 1921 and 1922. He was a member of the Greeley Presbyterian church. Keyes graduated from the Colorado State Teachers college in 1901 and for the next years was principal of the schools at Fairplay, Colo. Then he went to Colorado college at Colorado Springs where he obtained a master?s degree and then to Chicago, where he studied law. | 515 | Notre Dame Instructor Found Dead On Rails Near Huntington Huntington - The body of a Notre Dame University ROTC instructor who had been visiting relatives during the Thanksgiving holiday was found lying across the tracks of the Erie-Lackawanna Railroad 2 1/2 miles northeast of here Friday. Authorities said the upper portion of the body of Army Staff Sgt. Donald Joseph Brown, 30, had been mangeled severely, presumably by one or more trains which passed over the track during a period of several hours Brown was missing. The body was picked up about 7:30 p.m., shortly after the crew of a train which passed by earlier reported to authorities that an unidentified object was seen lying on the tracks. Officials said Brown had been dead "for some time", and may have been run over by one or more of several other trains which passed through earlier Friday. Visibility was low during the day, due to weather conditions, they noted. Brown, a native of Huntington, who with his wife and two children had been visiting in the home of her parents over the holiday, left the home at 11:30 a.m. Friday to take his car to a Huntington garage for repairs. Garage employees confirmed Brown had been there and left after his car was serviced. Huntington County Sheriff Marion Van Pelt and railroad investigator L.t J.E. Zinsmeister said Brown's car was found parked and locked at a county road railroad crossing on the Huntington-Union Township line, about 150 feet from where the body was discovered on the tracks. They said a resident of the area recalled seeing the car parked there around 1 p.m. The investigation was continuing late Friday, Huntington County Coroner Dr. S.E. Cope said hours after the discovery of the body that he had "not ruled out" foul play in the case, in view of the fact Brown's family said he had been in apparently good spirits. Brown was the son of Mrs. Cornelius Brown here. His wife's parents are Mr. and Mrs. Ernest Cantrell. In addition to the wife, Karen; two children, and the mother, Brown is survived by two brothers and four sisters. | 516 | Oliver Bassett The Connecticut Maple Leaf Vol. 2, June 1985, page 50 Oliver Bassett, the capable manager of the town farm in the town of Killingly, was born at Danielson, Connecticut, May 12, 1876, his parents being John B. and Adeline (Dragon) Bassett. The father, a native of Canada, remained in that country to the age of twelve years and then came to the United States, continuing his education which had been begun in the schools of his native country, by study in a night school at Danielson. He was afterward employed in the Quinebaug mills of Danielson, spending twenty-five eyars as a loom fixer. Later he purchased a farm near Danielson and for sixteen years devoted his attention to general farming and dairying and also operated a cider mill upon his place. He passed away May 19, 1909, and is still survived by his widow, who makes her home with her daughter, Mrs. William Ross, on Broad Street in Danielson. Their family numbered four children: Oliver, of this review, Clara, who is the wife of William Ross, a reed manufacturer who also operates a sawmill in Danielson; John, who married Eva Rapp, of Danielson, and is associated with Mr. Ross in reed manufacturing; and Alfred, who weeded Lillian McNeal, of Providence, Rhode Island, and is also connected with Mr. Ross in the reed business. Oliver Bassett was a pupil in the public schools of Danielson and in youth began working in the cotton mills, being thus employed for five years. He afterward turned his attention to farming and from 1889 until 1900, or for a period of eleven years, was employed by Daniel Shippee. Later he purchased the old home place, which he rented to others for a time but eventually sold. He then leased a farm from Mrs. Charles Perkins in the town of Killingly for a period of eleven years and thereon devoted his attention to the cultivation of his fields and to dairying, conducting his business affairs with very gratifying success. He afterward purchased farm land near Danielson and it was his intention to there engage in the lumber business, but he was solicited by the officials of the town to take over the town farm and accordingly he rented his place in Danielson and assumed the management of the town farm in November, 1916. Here he has since remained, giving excellent satisfaction by his capable management of the property and the care of those living thereon. On the 20th of March, 1898, Mr. Bassett was married to Lena Shippee, daughter of Daniel and Mary (Thompson) Shippee, natives of Windham county. To this marriage five children have been born: Lawrence O., Mary E., Earl, John E. and Adeline, all yet at home with the exception of Earl, who has been called to the home beyond. Mr. Bassett is a republican in his political views. He worked for the town for several years as foreman of the roads and he has always maintained a helpful attitude in public affairs. ALBERT WILSON PASSED TO HER REWARD AT HOME NEAR LIBERTY CENTER ---------------- Mrs. Albert Wilson, aged sixty, passed away at her home near Uniondale last night at about 10 o'clock, after an illness of several weeks. She contracted a heavy cough early in the winter, and pneumonia set in, a complication of heart disease following. It was this latter disease that caused her death, she having a sudden sinking spell and the clotting of the blood about her heart causing death. Mrs. Wilson was a daughter of the late Aaron Fleming and wife, of Bluffton. She was born in Rockcreek Township, and has lived in this county her entire lifetime, several years being spent in Bluffton preceding and immediately following the death of her parents here about five years ago. She was a member of the local Presbyterian Church and has been a consistent Christian character all of her life. Forty-three years ago last New Year's day she was married to Albert Wilson, and is survived by her husband and eight children; Mrs. Alonzo Brickley, Mrs. George Beach, Mrs. John Lamb, Mrs. Orin Starbuck, Mrs. Grover Brickley, Mrs. Will Christ, Miss Gladys, and John Wilson. With the exception of Mrs. Starbuck, who lives in Huntington, the other children are either in Uniondale or vicinity. She was 90 years of age. Julie was born on April 27, 1915 in Roseville, daughter to the late Mrs. and Mrs. Declercq. She was united in marriage to her beloved husband Harold in 1935. The couple resided in Roseville and their union was blessed with three beautifule sons. Julie was a LPN and worked for the Fraser Agency for 20 years doing private home care. She was a member of the Roseville VFW auxiliary for over 50 years. Julie became a member of St. John Lutheran Church in 1963 where she remained very active and in her later years was also involved in the 55+ club. She also was very active in various senior citizens clubs. Julie loved traveling; she was the founder of the Busy Bee Travel Club. She enjoyed sewing, playing the organ, gardening, and playing Euchre and Dominos. Julie was a very lvoing and caring wife, mother, grandmother, and friend who will be deeply missed by the many she has touched in her lifetime. | 535 | Find-a-Grave obituary One-Time Cincinnatian Dies While Visiting Son Services for Leon Bass, who once worked as a quality control engineer at General Electric?s Evendale plant, will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Weil Funeral home, 3001 Reading Rd. He died Friday morning at the home of a son, Robert A. Bass, 2326 Vera Ave., Golf Manor. Mr. Bass was a quality control consultant for Honeywell Information Systems, Inc., in Belfort, France, visiting here. He was graduated from the University of Cincinnati in 1931 and in 1937 began work as a researcher at Wright-Patterson Air Fore Base, Dayton, Ohio. During World War II he was a parts inspector for the Air Force at the General Electric plant in Schenectady, N.Y., and joined OE after the war. In 1954 he became the manager for advance quality control for GE?s jet engine division in Evendale. In 1961 the U.S. State Department named him to a two-man team to visit Israel as an advisor on quality control. GE Sent hm to a computer component plant in Belfort, and he remained with the plant after it was acquired by Honeywell. Mr. Bass was awarded the George D. Edward Medal in 1963 by the American Society for Quality Control ?for outstanding leadership in advancing the practice of quality control.? He was a fellow and past president of the society. While in Cincinnati he was active in the United Appeal and the UC Building Fund, and for several years served as trustee and treasurer of Rockdale Temple. Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Bernice Weiss Bass; three sons, Robert, Cincinnati, Stephen J., Edwardsville, Ill., and James N., Gainesville, Fla; two sisters, Mrs. Max (Irma) Leva and Mrs. Alfred (Rosalyn) Silverberg, both of Hollywood, Fla.; and a grand-daughter. She left behind her loving husband, Philip Raymond Bass, retired from the Sherman Police Department, and her four children that she loved dearly: Deborah "Debbie" Lynn Ramazini, Raymond Matthew Bass, Beverly Christine "Crissy" Collins and Brian Christopher Bass (twins), all Sherman High School graduates. She is also survived by her mother, Beverly Glade; brother, Edward Glade; and an uncle, Thomas Gaffney. She has seven grandchildren with Chrissie Collins expecting triplets. Patricia was very educated. She took multiple courses in childcare and computer science, and she also taught computer science. She could paint, knit and do extraordinary crafts. She also taught nutritional health cases. She was a caring, loving and giving person. She owned and supervised Tiny Tots Infant Day Care for many years. Patricia also leaves behind Betty and Doyle Black her adopted brother and sister, as well as many loving friends, including Ralph and Elaine Mosley. Pat will be greatly missed by her husband and family, along with a multitude of loving friends. She went to great extremes to help anyone who came to her for help. Pat was a devoted member of Harvest Time Assembly of God Church and Weight Watchers, when it was originally organized at St. Stephen's. She loved to read the Bible, talk about the Lord, and witness at every opportunity she could. The main desire of her life was to have her family and friends accept Jesus Christ as their Savior so that one day we would be reunited with her in Heaven. James proudly served as an Operating Room Specialist in the United States Army while he was stationed in Germany from 1958-1961. This experience prompted his journey into the medical field and surgery. Jim was a proud graduate of the University of Michigan Medical School. He worked as a Surgeon in various cities including, Ann Arbor, Mich., Madison, Cincinnati, Ohio and Buffalo, N.Y. before he opened his practice as a Sole Practitioner in Milwaukee where he worked from 1984 until his retirement in 2000. A distinguished member of the AMA, Jim achieved many firsts in his field of Endoscopic Thoracotomy. He was published in a number of medical journals. Jim will be remembered as a dedicated and skilled Surgeon and most importantly as a loving husband and father. He will be dearly missed. Bass lived almost his entire life in the Tennessee Valley and Ridge section of Alabama, primarily in Cherokee County. Armed with in-depth knowledge about practical subjects, an endless inventory of jokes and humor, and an encyclopedic knowledge of native plants and their medicinal uses, Bass devoted himself to "trying to give ease" to many people with varying afflictions and complaints who sought his advice and remedies. The youngest of six children, Arthur Lee "Tommie" Bass was born on January 24, 1908, to Kate and John Bass, near Scottsboro in Jackson County, where his parents had moved from Greene County, Tennessee, around the turn of the century. John Bass was a fur trapper, trader, woodsman, and subsistence farmer. Kate was a resourceful woman known for making an herb salve remedy from a family recipe that, according to oral tradition, had English origins. During his childhood, Bass's family moved several times to locations along Lookout Mountain before settling in 1917 in Cherokee County. Their new home was a major cotton farming area near the Coosa River, but the Bass family continued its self-sufficient practices, raising some cotton and corn, but engaging primarily in truck farming, berry and herb gathering, fur trading, fishing, and producing railroad crossties. Tommie Bass attended school only one day in his entire life, but he was constantly absorbing the plant and animal lore of the Southern Appalachians, as well as a variety of jokes, tales, and songs. His mother taught him to write, and he learned to read from local newspapers, the Bible, and popular magazines. At age 16, he was baptized in a local creek as a Free Will Baptist. Bass served a six-month tour in the army in 1942, but otherwise he spent his entire adult life near the small town of Leesburg, where he worked at various jobs. Bass gained a widening reputation after a Gadsden newspaper ran several stories on him that highlighted his knowledge of medicinal plants and the salves and tonics he made. Throughout the 1960s and 1970s, Bass received visitors seeking cures and knowledge from throughout the South, and eventually from across the United States, at the small, wood-frame shack that served as his herb warehouse and consultation office. He conducted countless walking tours through the woods of Shinbone Ridge and Little River Canyon, teaching everyone from school children to medical school students and professors how to identify the plants and good-humouredly passing along his knowledge of botanical remedies. Late in his life, Bass made several out-of-state trips to folk festivals in neighboring states and lectured about Appalachian medicinal plants at the University of North Carolina and Duke University. He has been the subject of a two-volume scholarly study of his herbal knowledge and a documentary film. He received his B.S. degree from Troy University and his M.S. and Ph.D. degrees from Auburn University. He met Merle Findley, of Andalusia, at TU and they were married in 1956. Bass went on the faculty at Auburn in 1960 and was involved in research and teaching there until 1980. In 1980 he accepted a position with University of Georgia as Professor and Department Head of Entomology at the UGA Coastal Plain Experiment Station in Tifton Georgia. During his career he published 120 refereed scientific articles, two book chapters and one book. While at A.U. he was major professor for 35 successful graduate students and was the State Coordinator for the IR-4 regional research project. He served on the Auburn City Board for two terms and was President during his second term. At UGA he was National Coordinator for the IR-4 project and served as President of the South Eastern Branch of the Entomological Society of America. Before his retirement from UGA he was moved up from Department Head to serve as Resident Director of the University of Georgia Coastal Plain Experiment Station. After retiring from UGA he served on the Tift County Board of Tax Assessors and on the Ethics Board of the Tift County Regional Hospital. After returning to Auburn, Max was active in the First Baptist Church, where he served on many committees as well as serving as a Deacon and Assistant Treasurer. J.D. Hunt, engineer in charge of the Centre office, identified the man as Calvin Wilson Bass of Piedmont, Rt. 3. The accident occurred in the Jamestown Community as a group of workmen cut a series of trees, Hunt explained. High winds in the area at the time held one of the trees upright after its base had been severed, Huhnt said, and workmen finally moved on to the next tree after fruitless efforts to bring the first to earth. Bass was picking up some brush in the fall path of the first tree when the wind suddenly stopped, and was crushed as the heavy weight toppled on top of him before he could move. Raised in Union Lake she attended St. Patrick's Elementary School through the 8th grade. She was involved in the girl scouts and took ballet lessons. She attended St. Frederick's High School in Pontiac for her freshman and sophomore years, where she was involved in the Junior Achievement program. She then attended Walled Lake High School for her junior and senior years, graduating in 1969. While attending high school Kathie also took classes at Oakland Community College in the nurse's training program. She also worked diligently for ALSAC and for three years directed the fund-raising program for St. Jude's Hospital for the Union Lake area, gaining the honor of meeting Danny Thomas in person. After graduating she attended the University of Michigan taking business and accounting classes. On July 21, 1973 Kathie married the love of her life CW3 (Ret.) Dwight Langley Bass, Sr. while he was stationed at the Nike Hercules Missile Base in Union Lake. Together they travelled the world. While stationed in Germany Kathie attended business and accounting classes through the Central Texas College Extension program. As a result, she became the supervisor for USAREUR Audio/Photo Agency, overseeing the payroll and attendance for 325 personnel. Once they were stationed in Huntsville, Alabama Kathie attended Calhoun Community College furthering her business accounting skills. Her favorite hobbies included travelling, cross-stitch, reading, sign language, gardening, and fund raising. From 1989-1990 she served as the president of the John Hunt Pilot Club. She also managed the Huntsville Athletic Club and Restaurant. Kathie was selflessly involved in the Alabama Master Gardeners Association. She served as president in 2016 for the North Alabama Master Gardeners, and fund-raising chairperson for both the North and State Alabama Master Gardeners. Kathie received numerous awards for her service with the Master Gardeners Association, including the Mary Lou McNabb award for 2010, the Jean Lee Award for 2010, and the Top Hours award for 2011 for the Alabama Master Gardeners. Kathie received a lifetime member award for her extensive work and devotion to the Master Gardeners of Alabama. Kathie was a loving mother to Dwight "Hank" Bass, Jr. and Zackery (Marsheen) Ryan. She had four grandchildren, and five great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her sister, Elizabeth Proven Fekete of Waterford Michigan. | 540 | Phillips Family History, Chapter XVI Sally Philips (Mrs. Sion Bass) Sally Philips, daughter of Benjamin and Lydia, was born July 7, 1803 and died November 14, 1890. She married Sion Bass August 21, 1823. Sion, the oldest child of John and Annie Bass, was born in Sumner County, Tennessee, August 11, 1802. The marriage bond for his wedding to Sally Philips was executed August 2, 1823, and was signed by Sion and his father, John. He and Sally lived to celebrate their sixty-first wedding anniversary. Shortly after their marriage, Sion was ordained a minister by the Round Lick Baptist Church, beginning a ministry that continued sixty years. For forty-five years he was pastor of the Round Lick church. In an article in ?The Gospel Messenger? in 1885, P.M. Lancaster gave the following estimate of the ministry of Sion Bass: ?Brother Bass was a gifted man, mighty in the scriptures, an able fender, a good speaker, and a might reasoned. There were but few who were his equals. He was a man of untiring energy. For several years he was nearly alone in the Round Lick Association and he was not able to travel; yet he traveled, and did all he could to keep the churches together until the Lord raised up more preachers.? Sion and Sally lived on a farm in the Eleventh District of Wilson County. Sion was administrator of the estate of Benjamin Philips., Sion died September 27, 1884. Sally became blind in her old age, but survived her husband. She was 81 at the time of his death. Sion and Sally had ten children: Thomas, Eliza, Edward Price, Elias, Mary Ann, John L., Margaret Malissa, Preston, Emily and Sion Bradford. Thomas and Preston died in boyhood. Eliza married Watson Potter and left no children. Mary Ann married William Allen and move to Illinois. The author has been unable to get in touch with her descendants. | 545 | The Atlanta Journal-Constitution, August 28, 2010 Edith Nash Bassett (Picture included) Edith Nash Bassett, 86, of Decatur, Georgia passed away peacefully on August 27 following a brief illness. Just last year, she was preceded in death by her devoted husband of 67 years, John Thomas "Jack" Bassett III. Affectionately known to family and friends as "Pooch," Edith was a life-long DeKalb resident; the eighth of nine children born to Charles Edward and Velma Jane (Brownlee) Nash. Edith graduated from Clarkston High School in 1941, married in 1942, worked for the Red Cross during WWII, and with her husband Jack, operated Fernside Dairy until 1958. Together with business partner Emma Lou Ray, Edith took over and operated a legacy family business, the Bassett Kindergarten and Nursery School, in downtown Decatur from 1961 - 1986. Much of Edith's life was shaped by lessons learned from living through the Great Depression and World War II. Edith loved deeply, and her love was returned in kind to all who knew her; family and friends alike. A talented and true southern cook, she would often turn simple foods and ingredients into wonderful meals - expressions of love - for family and friends. Later in life, Edith enjoyed her home, family get-togethers, gardening, Avondale Pattillo Methodist Church, the Wellness Center at DeKalb Medical, and her cat, Prissy. Edith is survived by her brother, Charles Donald Nash and his wife Dot Cheek Nash of Decatur; sisters-in-law Donna Pauline Nash of Tucker, and Juanita Jayroe Bassett of Richmond, Virginia; daughters Beverly June Bassett of Olympia, Washington, and Betty Reba Bassett Sule of Stone Mountain; sons John Thomas Bassett IV and his wife Patricia Jean Bassett of Marietta, and Edward Nash Bassett and his wife Lynn Maria Bassett of Olympia, Washington; grandchildren Laura Kathleen Sule, Alex Michael Sule, Mark Edward Sule, Shannon Michelle Bassett, John Thomas "Jay" Bassett V and his wife Jessica (LaCroix) Bassett, Luke Edward Bassett, and Larkin Nash Bassett. Edith's life and love was also enhanced by and extended to many wonderful and devoted nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews. The new store is operated by Melvin R. Bassett, who recently returned to Kane from New Castle, where he was representative of a nationally-known line of food products. The storeroom occupied by the new self-served store formerly housed a business conducted by his father, the late L. D. Bassett. The place has been remodeled and redecorated throughout and a new brick front has been constructed. Interior of the store with its various fixtures is arranged in the groceteria self-serving style, the first type of such store to be established in this vicinity. The opening of the store will take place this evening at 7:30 o?clock at which time an invitation has been extended the public so inspect the place. The Kane Republican, Pennsylvania, Saturday, 19 May 1956 Sale of Bassett Building Things are humming down at the corner of Chase and Bayard streets where negotiations for sale of the Bassett building to Carl Nicolazzo, of Kane, R.D., were completed this week. The sale negotiations as reported a week ago, for the first time take the building from hands of the Bassett family. The building which has seen Kane?s first theatre and a variety of business ventures, was constructed before turn of the century by the late L.D. Bassett, and modernized by the recent owner Melvin R. Bassett, in 1936. The large building is situated on a lot 150 by 159 feet fronting on Chase and extending along Bayard to an alleyway across from the borough building. Today, George Hetrick and Evert Bloom are moving their wholesale washer parts business next door into the former location of the Coulter Studio ? a huge job. Their location, it was reported, is expected to house a TV repair business. At the corner, Jerry Petruzzi is decorating and planning near future opening of an exchange business-used furniture and other articles. No plans have been reported by the new owner for other rooms in the building, including the large apartment over one part of the building. When L.D.B asset constructed the building, he operated a grocery store there. Later he changed the business to kitchenware and pottery and his wife Jennie had an art goods department. The Nickelodeum, Kane?s first theatre, opened in the building with entrance from Bayard street under management of a many be the name of McManus. In those days of the flickers, ?Maggie? Murphy sand for the illustrated songs. The late Mike Chairamonte conducted a grocery business in the building on Bayard street for many years, then moved up on Chase street. The recent owner Melvin Basset and his wife Betty operated a grocery in the brick-front part of the building for a few years prior to Mr. Bassett?s employment by the government at Reading and Harrisburg.
