Football Kills Lumberton Boy
Levi Bass, A.& M. Boy, Dies From Injuries Received in Birmingham Game
Special to The News

New Orleans, La., Dec. 18 ? Levi Gaston Bass, aged twenty-three years, thy youngest son of I.E. Bass of Lumberton, Miss., passed away at the Presbyterian hospital, in Carondelet street, last night. Meningitis, believed to have had its origin in injuries received by Mr. Bass while playing left end on the football team of the Agricultural and Mechanical College of Starkville, Miss., in a game at Birmingham, Oct. 29, was the immediate cuase of death.
Mr. Bass, who was a brother of Drs. C.C. Bass and Elizabeth Bass, both of this city, was brought here for treatment, four weeks ago, being taken to the Presbyterian Hospital. There he had all the attention and care that a devoted brother and sisters could give. All the resources of medical science were exhausted in an effort to save the life of the young man, even the Rockefeller Instituate being called upon in the hope that it might be able to furnish a serum that would arrest the ravages of the desease. Mr. Bass never recovered consciousness, however.
Mr. Bass was a member of the senior class of the Agricultural and Mechnical College of Starkville, and would have graduated this year. He was devoted to athletics, and had distinguished himself as a football player. In the game at Birmingham, where he was injuried, he was knocked out three times, but went back into the game the fourth time. The disease did not develop until several days after the game in which he was injured.
Besides his father and mother, living at Lumberton, Mr. Bass leaves three brothers, Dr. C.C. Bass of this city, Lieuth. I. E. Bass, U.S.A., and I. H. Bass of Lumberton, and four sisters, Dr. Elizabeth Bass of this city, Dr. Cora M. Bass Pigford of Lumberton, Mrs. A.S. Applewhite of Jackson, and Miss Wreathe Bass of Lumberton.

Wichita Falls, Texas

By Matt Ledesma
Wichita Falls police identified Wednesday a 75-year-old man found dead inside his home following a large fire in the 1600 block of Garfield last week.
Now they're asking for the community's help finding the man's next of kin.
The victim was identified as Terry Joseph Bassett, born January 20, 1937. Officer Jeff Hughes, police spokesman, said Bassett lived alone, wasn't married and didn't have any children.
He said police were having trouble finding any of Bassett's family members.
"We've exhausted all avenues searching for any next of kin," Hughes said. "We're asking anyone with information about the family to contact Officer Rick Cullar at 940-761-7762."
Bassett's death sparked a joint investigation by city police and Wichita Falls firefighters following the blaze that destroyed the man's home Friday.
Neighbors reported seeing flames about 2:40 a.m. It took firefighters a little under an hour to get the blaze under control.
Bassett's body was found inside the property.
Hughes said the investigation into Bassett's death revealed the cause to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Firefighters also determined the fire was self-started, according to Hughes.
A resident of the 1600 block of Garfield who asked not to be named described a neighborly but distant relationship with Bassett.
"I never even knew his first name. I always just called him Mr. Bassett," the woman said. "In 15 years I've never seen him have a visitor."
The woman said Bassett, an only child, lived with his mother until 2005. Hughes identified Bassett's parents as Carter and Lorene Bassett, both deceased.
Bassett's parents moved to Wichita Falls from Amarillo in 1946, according to a Times Record News article printed in 1949.
Bassett's neighbor said he was a reclusive person who at times would converse with her and her husband.
She said she felt a need to check in on him, especially after his mother's death.
She also described times Bassett would leave small gifts on her porch for her and her children.
She mentioned that in the week before the fire, Bassett spoke to her more than he ever had in several years.
"It's just sad. I think everybody should have somebody at the end," the woman said as she cleaned bits of broken glass and fire debris from her driveway.
The woman said Bassett mentioned having worked for a railroad company at one time.
An obituary for Carter Bassett from a March 1971 edition of the Times Record News indicated Bassett lived in Arlington at one time.

James Elvin Bass, born Nov. 9, 1936, in England, passed from this life on Monday, May 1, 2006. He died from complications of Alzheimer's disease. He was preceded in death by his parents, Amos and Ruby Bass; brother, Aubrey "A.J." Bass; and sister, Dorothy Coney.

He leaves behind his precious wife of 45 years, Mary Spradling Bass of Little Rock; daughter, Cheryl Williams and husband Paul of Little Rock; son, Leigh Bass and wife Lisa of Hartford; one sister, Mattie Pitts and husband Don of Jacksonville; two brothers, John Bass and wife Ann of Amherst, Ohio, and Clyde Bass and wife Pat of Southaven, Miss.; sister-in-law, Norma Bass of Mabelvale; brother-in-law, Don Spradling and wife Rosemary of Fort Smith; mother-in-law, Raye Spradling of Barling; many nieces and nephews; seven grandchildren, Andrew, Stephen and Sara Williams, and Chelsea, Hayden, Logan and Jacob Bass.

James grew up in the England area and graduated from Plum Bayou High School. He was a good athlete in school and played softball and basketball through his early adult years. When his knees wouldn't permit anymore sports, he became an umpire instead. He worked both in construction and as a salesman/manager of Waterworks Supply Co. for many years. He was a natural salesman because he never met a stranger. Even when struggling with Alzheimer's disease, he would smile and speak to everyone, especially little children. James was a devoted husband and father. He took great pride in the accomplishments of all his family, but especially his children and grandchildren. They also adored their Papaw James!

A veteran of the Persian Gulf War, Operation Desert Storm, he retired as a staff sergeant from the Army National Guard. When the 142nd Field Artillery Unit of Fort Chaffee was called up for duty in November 1990, he was proud and anxious to serve.

The past several years of living with Alzheimer's disease have been difficult for him and his family. The family wishes to thank the many family and friends for their prayers and acts of kindness. Thanks go to the physicians and staff of the UAMS Reynolds Center for their expertise and care. Also thanks to Alzheimer's Arkansas, especially the Tuesday night support team group. A special thank you to the staff of Unit 1-D at the North Little Rock Veterans Hospital, who have blessed us with their patient and loving care of James.

William Howard Bass

William Howard Bass passed away unexpectedly on Tuesday, Oct. 19, 2004, in Fayetteville. Howard was born on Sept. 5, 1915, in Prague, Okla. He first came to Fayetteville as a young boy when his father, O.W. Bass, was hired as the Washington County superintendent of schools in the early 1920s. The family lived on a small farm on the southeast side of Fayetteville, later moving into town on Leverett Street. Howard attended Peabody High School at the University of Arkansas, where he was a football player and, according to him, not too much of a scholar. He later married Eloise Kinard Bass of El Dorado, whom he met while she was a student at the University of Arkansas. Following their marriage, they lived briefly in Poteau prior to moving to Fort Smith, where he began employment with Godt Brothers Drug Store as the restaurant manager. In 1940, Howard purchased the Plaza Cafe, which was located in the old Union Bus Station on Garrison Avenue, and operated that along with his brother, Oscar, until 1950, when they opened the Dairy Grand drive-in restaurant at Grand Avenue and 31st Street. Howard was a veteran of World War II, having served as a staff sergeant in charge of a mortar squad during the Battle of the Bulge as well as serving in the Army of Occupation until he returned home to Fort Smith in late 1945. In 1961, Howard and Eloise returned to Fayetteville, where he opened the Fayetteville Linen Supply, which at that time was located on Dickson Street where the Walton Arts Center is now located. His brother, Oscar, also joined him as a partner in the linen supply. Howard was a past president of the Fayetteville Exchange Club and a member of Central United Methodist Church.

Howard is survived by his brother, John Bass of San Francisco; his son and daughter-in-law, James and Karen Bass of Arlington, Texas; daughter-in-law, Sherryl Bass of Houston; and grandchildren, Cary Bass, Melissa Thornton, Leah Bass, Sarah Bass, April Bass, Laura Rice, Eric Sherman and Chris Sherman; and four great-grandchildren.

Howard was predeceased by his loving wife, Eloise; his parents, O.W. and May Bass; his eldest son, Howard H. Bass; and his brothers, Theodore and Oscar Bass; as well as two siblings who died as infants. Funeral services will be held graveside at Fairview Memorial Park at 3 p.m. today, with Moore's Chapel of Fayetteville handling arrangements.
