| 50301 | Twin to Cora. Mrs. Hilliard Dies at Age of 92; Rites Mon. Mrs. H.P. Hilliard, 92, died Friday afternoon in the Ennis Nursing Home after a long illness. Mrs. Hilliard, formerly Cara Lee Macon, was born in Alabama, Jan. 23, 1877, the daughter of G.T. and Emily Bassett Macon. She came to Ennis in 1897 and on Sept. 11, 1893, married Hiram Preston Hilliard of Ennis. Mr. Hilliard died May 20, 1946. She had been organist for the First Christian Church for more than fifty years when retiring and had been a music teacher for a number of years. She was a member of the First Christian Church. Surviving her are one daughter, Mrs. Cora Lee Landrum of Dalls; one grandson, Walter D. Hilliard, Dallas, two granddaughters, Mrs. James L. Napper of Cherokee Village, Ark. and Mrs. J.R. Grubbs of Denver, Colo; eleven great- grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild. The funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Monday in Keever Chapel with the Rev. Bassett Edgar M. Bassett died yesterday afternoon at his home on Elizabeth street after a long illness. Last summer he underwent a surgical operation but it failed to effect a cure and he had been in poor health ever since. Mr. Bassett was born and spent his life here. He was a steamboat cook and until late years sailed on vessels plying between Ogdensburg and lake ports. Since he quit steamboating he was employed as a clerk in various groceries. He was an industrious, honorable man and was highly respected by every one who knew him. He was a member of Acacian Lodge, No. 705 F.& A.M. Mrs. Mariani was born Jan. 13, 1938 in Brooklyn, N.Y. and grew up in Minnesota where she was a diehard Vikings fan. She was a waitress at the Coral Reef and Village Inn and enjoyed selling Avon, spending time with friends, gardening; reading, watching Jeopardy, crossword puzzles and hosting family get togethers. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her brother, Arnie; her son, John; and her grandson, Michael. She is survived by her husband of 40 years, Andy L. Mariani, Jr. of Kitts Hummock; sons, Robert Henrich and his wife Kelli of Dover, Mike Henrich and his wife Pam of Felton, and Chuck Henrich and his girlfriend Donna of Dover; brothers, Brad Bassett of Washington State, Glenn "Buzzy" Bassett of Duluth, Minn.; and twin sister, Beverly Lunde of Duluth, Minn.; five grandchildren, Kristen, Heather, Nicholas, Sarah and Aaron; and six great-grandchildren. She will be greatly missed. She was a friend and mother to all. Memorial services will be held at noon on Thursday, May 30, 2013 at Torbert Funeral Chapel South, 1145 E. Lebanon Road (Rt.10), Dover. Wood occurred Wednesday evening, Nov. 23, at the home of her daughter, Mrs. David H. Guy in Detroit, Mich. Alice Bassett Wood was born in Ogdensburg, Mar. 18, 1951, the daughter of Captain Edgar M. and Sarah Ann (Town) Bassett. Her marriage to Harvey H. Wood took place May 13, 1873. He passed away Jan. 22, 1923. Mrs. Wood had always made her home in Ogdensburg until about four years ago when she went to Detroit to reside with her daughter. Surviving besides Mrs. Guy are another daughter, Mrs. Stuart F. Wheater, Helmuth, N.Y., and two sons, Edgar J. and Harrison B. of Jacksonville, Florida; also ten grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Funeral services were conducted at her late residence, 610 Canton St., Saturday afternoon, Nov. 26 at 3 o’clock. Rev Theophilus Wells of the M.E. Church officiating. | 50313 | twin. raised by the Collins family. He served in World War II. Marian "Merlon" Allen Bassett, son of Allen Leroy and Olivia (Davis) Bassett, was born 11 Aug 1926 in Portland, Maine. He died Thursday, 27 Dec 2002 in Holyoke, Massachusetts. He married Beatrice C. Teran about 1948 in Panama. He and his brother William were foster children raised by John Collin's family. Union-News and Sunday Republican 12/28/2002 - 12/29/2002 Merlon Bassett 1926-2002 HOLYOKE - Merlon Bassett, age 76, of Holyoke, passed away peacefully at home on Thursday, Dec. 27th. Born in Portland, Maine on Aug. 11, 1926, he settled in Holyoke in 1950. He joined the Merchant Marines at the beginning of WWII and then joined the Army where he served bravely in the European Theater and the African Campaign. Merlon then joined the Air Force until 1962 and finally was a member of the Massachusetts Air National Guard, serving with the 104th Tactical Fighter Group, serving in the military for a total of 22 years. Merl worked for the Brown Paper Company for many years and then worked for the Commonwealth of MA as a 3rd Class Engineer, retiring in 1988. After retiring, he looked foward each year to spending the winter in Florida where he enjoyed fishing. His favorite pasttime during retirement was repairing bicycles for his children, his grandchildren, and the children of the neighborhood. Merl is survived by his loving wife of 54 years, Beatrice (Villasis-Teran) Bassett; his six children, Anna Eddy and her husband Roger of Newington, CT, Merlon A. and his wife Mary Ann (Sattler) of West Brookfield, MA, James of Setauket, NY, Gregory and his companion Darlene Sinay of Agawam, David and his wife Gail (Mailloux) of Holyoke, Joanne Horak and her husband David of Palmer; a sister-in-law, Fabiola Vega of Holyoke; 13 grandchildren, Alyssa, Kevin, Christopher, Rachael, Marielle, Michael, Jason, Chad, Ryan, Tyler, Zachary, Luke and Vanessa; and several nieces and nephews. Merl was predeceased by his brothers, Millard, Irving and William Bassett. The funeral will be Saturday morning, Dec. 28th from the Dillon Funeral Home, 124 Chestnut St., Holyoke at 10:30 a.m. with a Mass of Christian Burial at 11:30 a.m. in Immaculate Conception Church, N. | 50350 | Two Teens died in rollover accident Three other youths were treated for minor injuries June 13, 2007 6:00 AM CAVE JUNCTION - Two Illinois Valley teens died in a rollover crash after school Monday and three others suffered minor injuries. Josephine County sheriff's deputies and emergency medical crews responding to a single-vehicle crash in the 6000 block of Takilma Road, Cave Junction, found Savannah Pauline Bassett, 18, and Kiara Alexi Faith Richardson, 16, both of Cave Junction, dead at the crash scene, the sheriff's department reported. The crash was reported at 3:38 p.m. Monday. Three other teens - Shyan Christine Ellis, 16, Arial Ann Sinnwell, 18, and Lonnie Michael Behn, 16 - were taken by ambulance from the crash to Three Rivers Community Hospital, where they were treated and released, hospital officials said. Josephine County Sherriff's Department and Oregon State Police are investigating the crash. An OSP crash reconstructionist is working on determining the cause. Preliminary results indicate that Behn, who was driving his family's 2002 blue Isuzu Roseo, had picked up for friends at Illinois Valley High School and was heading to and address on Waldo Road, the sheriff's department reported. In the 6000 block of Takilma Road, he lost control of the small SUV. If left the roadway, then returned to the pavement, slid across the oncoming traffic lane, and rolled, the sheriff's department said. Investigators indicated in a news release that Bassett and Richardson died when they were ejected from the vehicle. They are still working to determine who was wearing seat belts at the time of the crash. Investigators don't suspect drugs or alcohol were factors in the crash, officials said in the release. During high school she was a cheerleader for four years and was on the competition team her senior year; was involved in swing choir all four years; was a "Cougar Pal" - a high school mentor to elementary children, and a member of Awana's until her senior year. She planned on attending Linfield College in McMinnville and intended to be an art history major. Savannah especially enjoyed photography, art, traveling, and reading. Survivors include her parents, Deelia and Scott Warner of Cave Junction; three brothers, Joshua of Bend and Derek and Sam of Cave Junction; a sister, Nisha of Cave Junction; grandparents, Patsy Mae Bassett of Salem, Frank Cooke of Cave Junction, Patricia Hunt of Coeur d'Alene, Idaho, Hank Warner of Cave Junction, and Dixie and Norm Degelnik of Selma.
