February 26, 2025 Ertis Eugene Bass, age 86, of Tyler, Texas passed away on Wednesday, February 26, 2025. He was born on July 25, 1938 in Rocky, Oklahoma to Dorothy and Ertis Bass. Ertis was raised in Rocky, Oklahoma and attended Rocky High School in 1957 and went on for some college. He marries Joice Foster in 1961 and the couple had 3 children. Ertis was an electrician at Goodyear Tire & Rubber, where he worked for more than 20 years. In his spare time, he enjoyed painting, horseback riding, fishing, hunting, and camping. His friends and family will always remember him as a kind person. Ertis is preceded in death by his daughter, Gena Bass Forest, who passed in December of 1998. Ertis is survived by his wife of 63 years, Joice, his children Stephanie Bass Gutkowski of Tyler and Kent Bass and wife Carrie of Ben Wheeler, grandchildren Justin Boldt, Casey Heinrich, April Paredez, Austin Scott, Hayley Fulton, Melody Bass, Tabitha Bass, and Hunter Bass, and 3 great-grandchildren. A visitation will occur from 4:00 PM to 6:00 PM at Tyler Memorial Funeral Home - Cemetery & Mausoleum, 12053 State Highway 64 West, Tyler, TX 75704. Bass, 77, of Tyler, will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, June 4, 2012, at Rose Hill Cemetery with the Reverend Allison Thompson officiating under the direction of Stewart Family Funeral Home. Mr. Bass passed away Saturday, June 2, 2012, at East Texas Medical Center. He was born February 18, 1935, in Tyler to the Reverend Elton Rayford and Evaline Wells Bass. Jim was a member of Marvin United Methodist Church where he sang in the choir for more than 35 years. He graduated from Tyler High School in 1953 and graduated from SMU in 1958 with a BBA business degree. Jim married the love of his life, Christine Cantwell in 1959, and lived in Dallas until returning to Tyler in 1968 to purchase Davis, Turner and Caruthers Insurance Agency, which then became Turner-Bass Associates. He was in the Air Force Reserves and was a heart transplant recipient of 14 years and six months. Jim was preceded in death by his parents and sister, Patsy Bass Gilmore. He is survived by his loving family, including his wife of 53 years, Christine; sons, Russell Murray Bass, of Tyler and his children, Brinley and Bradey, of Lindale; James Michael Bass and wife Amy and their children, Sydney and Tanner, all of Tyler; daughter, Anne Pukstys and husband Tom and their children, Luke, David and Dane, all of Chicago; brother, John Bass, of Tyler; several nephews, cousins and one great-grandson. She was a member of Marvin United Methodist Church where she was a member and president of the Century Class. She was preceded in death by her husband of 46 years, Harold Ward; and by a sister, Joyce Herrington. Mr. Parker passed away, Tuesday, Dec. 8, 2009, at Mother Frances Hospital in Tyler. He was born Aug. 23, 1926, in Caddo Mills to William and Mary Parker. He grew up in Tyler, excelled in football at Tyler High School and won the T.B. Butler award for the most valuable player in 1944. After serving in the Navy during World War II, he married Frances Bass and then continued to play football while attending SMU, where his team won the Southwest Conference in 1948. He went on to play professional football for the Pittsburg Steelers and New York Yankees. After his football career, Mr. Parker and his wife Frances returned to Tyler, and he worked for the furniture store Pope and Turner. Then in the early 60's he and Pat Chatham opened Parker Chatham Furniture on College Avenue. Later after closing the store, Mr. Parker worked for the First Baptist Church of Tyler as its building superintendent. Mr. Parker was a deacon and volunteer at First Baptist. He was also a Mason with the Shiners' organization and was grateful for their help with his daughter Deborah, who had juvenile rheumatoid arthritis. Mr. Parker is survived by his loving family including daughter, Sharon Chappell and husband Harmon of Tyler; son, Curtis Parker of Tyler; sister, Mary Nell Medlock of Giddings; grandchildren, Sesalie Till and husband Billy of Malakoff, Cory Parker and wife Tara of Georgia, Kimberly Palmer and husband Steve of Forney and Kara Chappell of Houston; five great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. Whether handwritten in block letters on yellow notes stuck to his desk or plugged into a spreadsheet, they organized Glenn's days. But Glenn's real checklist for life included only the most important items. Love God: Glenn was a faithful member of New Harmony Baptist Church for 48 years. He taught Sunday school at various times through the years, and most recently served on the finance committee. Glenn accepted Jesus into his life when he was a boy, and he was secure in his salvation until the end. Be a good husband: Glenn passed away on August 11, 2017, the 53rd anniversary of when he met his future wife, Trecia. They married on September 20, 1969, and shared 47 years together. Glenn loved all five feet and change of his petite Trecia Annie immensely. Together they looked to God to guide them in making decisions, and to teach them His ways. Be a good father: Glenn spoiled his only daughter, Carla, who appreciated her Dad's love, sense of humor, and inherited tall genes. Glenn also appropriately spoiled his two young grandsons, Lucas and Simon, and enjoyed lovingly giving his son-in-law, Rafael, a "hard time." Be friendly: For many years, one of Glenn's favorite annual events was a fishing trip to the James River in the Texas Hill Country with an assorted crew of friends. Glenn would show his affection for his closest friends with his quick wit and humor. He was friendly with people from all walks of life. Put in an honest day of work: Glenn proudly spent his final years of employment with Austin Bank. Glenn had planned to retire on September 15, 2017, as Senior Executive Vice President and Chief Operations Officer. He was also a member of the Executive Committee, and he served as an Advisory Director - but if asked, he would simply say he was "another guy in a suit." Before his career in banking, Glenn graduated as salutatorian of Whitehouse High School in 1966. He earned his bachelor's and master's degrees at what is now The University of Texas at Tyler, and completed a graduate program at the University of Michigan School of Business Management. Love your country: The Vietnam-era draft prompted Glenn's decision to initially leave college for four years of active duty in the U.S. Air Force from 1967-1971. He served two consecutive tours in Thailand and the Philippines, marrying Trecia between those tours. Laugh: When Glenn was around, things never became too serious. Even when solving problems, he did it with humor. Remembering that sense of humor will help his family and friends through difficult days, because Glenn finished his earthly checklist before they were ready. Heaven is a happier and probably more organized place with him there. After graduating from Tyler High in 1956, she went on to Southern Methodist University and met James E. Bass. She loved to tell the story about graduating in three years because James E. wouldn't marry her without a college degree. He loved to tell the story about how she broke up with him on a hay ride ten miles outside of town. They were married for 53 years until James E.'s death in 2012.Christine was the epitome of positivity and always had a smile on her face. She was an extraordinary cookie maker, bike fixer, artist, needlepoint master, dress maker, Christmas decoration designer, gardener, sewing club hostess, pianist, Junior League Volunteer, Blue Bird leader, and rock star caretaker. She could fix anything and always had a project.We lost her slowly due to the tolls of Dementia which was both a blessing and a curse. We know, however, that if she were here today, she would make everyone smile, laugh and know that "nice matters." She went into the arms of Jesus on Friday, October 26, 2018. Dorothy spent her life in service to others. She faithfully waited on her husband and provided for all his needs. She raised four girls, making all their clothes and providing three meals a day. She was an amazing homemaker whose home was always orderly and clean. In addition, she made sure all four children could swim and spent countless hours at the pool (as a non-swimmer). She chauffeured all of her children to the activities that suited them: art classes, music classes, special schools, band practices, football games and their performances. She went above and beyond in caring for her children and grandchildren. She was a hands-on cattlewoman and rancher and worked circles around any man. Dorothy was preceded in death by her parents, husband of 67 years Earl Raymond (Dutch) Bassett, Grandson Eric Wallace, and Great-Grandson Christopher Linker. She is survived by her daughters: Beverly Wallace, Montalba; Donna Hood-Clarkson, and husband Fred Clarkson of Tyler; Wendy Davis and husband Gary Davis of Alto; and Janette Kee and husband Michael Kee of Troup. Jack and Opal Bass on April 21,1942 in Paducah, Texas. She attended Troup schools until her graduation in 1960. It was then she earned a degree from Tyler Junior College and soon married her best friend and high school sweetheart, John Ashby. The majority of her career was spent in medical insurance where she was loyal and dedicated to all employers. During her 30+ years at DeHaven Eye Clinic, Ava received the prestigious Pinnacle Award presented to her by the American Society of Ophthalmic Administrators for her dedication to eliminate abusive billing practices and maintain compliance with government regulations. Whether it was singing in the choir, teaching Sunday School, or simply lending a helping hand, Ava served the Lord wholeheartedly at both First Baptist Church, Troup and Green Acres Baptist Church, Tyler. As shared by a dear friend, "She invested so much into the family she loved, and her love for Jesus was always evident in the way she loved others." While she will be well remembered for her beauty, grace, and contagious smile, her thoughtfulness of others will never be forgotten. Ava always claimed her greatest blessings were her two girls. That is, until she had grandkids. They were truly the apples of her eye; she never missed an opportunity to attend any of their events. She is survived by her loving husband, John Ashby, of Tyler as well as her daughters and sons-in-law Darla and Randy Childress of Tyler and Paula and Greg Evans of Arp. She will be greatly missed by her grandchildren Kyle Childress, Grant Childress, Drew and Madison Evans, and Haley and Rob Fenley. Although Maddox Evans will not have the blessing of remembering his 'Honey' on this earth, she could not have been prouder of her great grandson. She is also survived by her sister Charlotte Keasler (Charles) of Ennis, sister Sybil Kleam of LIndale, sister Marilyn Wilson (Kirk) of Tyler, and brother Lynn Bass of Whitehouse as well as numerous nieces and nephews whom she loved dearly. | 50389 | Tyler Morning Telegraph, Texas, Wednesday, 25 June 2025 Bill Bass TYLER, TEXAS ? Former Appeals Court Justice Bill Bass died June 20, 2025, at his home in Tyler, Texas. He was 90. James William (Bill) Bass, Jr. was a soldier, farmer, legislator, lawyer, and justice of the Texas 12th Court of Appeals. He graduated from the Agricultural and Mechanical College of Texas (Texas A&M) in 1955. On graduation, he was commissioned lieutenant of field artillery in the Army of the United States. Bill Bass married Patsy Ann McMurray in 1956, and she accompanied him to Germany, where he served 1 1/2 years with NATO forces. On leaving the army, Mr. Bass returned to Martin's Mill in Van Zandt County to farm, until droughts and hurricanes drove him to attend law school on the GI Bill. While in law school, he was elected to the Texas House of Representatives, where he represented the people of Henderson, Kaufman, and Van Zandt counties for three terms. While serving in the Legislature, Bill Bass was a member of a bipartisan ethics reform coalition, then called the "Dirty Thirty." The Dirty Thirty were 30 members of the House (out of 150) that sought a genuine investigation of the Sharpstown stock fraud scandal, and finally, the removal of the dictatorial Speaker of the House. Ultimately, the Dirty Thirty prevailed. The Speaker was convicted and resigned. The next election resulted in the largest turnover in Texas legislative seats in the 20th century; one time, at least, when the little guys really won. Mr. Bass left the Legislature to practice law in Canton with his friend and mentor, Clyde Elliott, Jr., until the Governor of Texas appointed him to the 12th Court of Appeals in Tyler, a three-judge court that heard appeals from 18 East Texas counties. He served the 12th Court of Appeals until he retired. In retirement, Justice Bass became a visiting judge, or Senior Appellate Judge. He drew special satisfaction from being named Justice Emeritus of the 12th Court of Appeals. He felt greatly honored to receive the annual Justinian Award from the Smith County Bar Foundation. Justice Bass was a member of the Texas Constitutional Revision Commission and the Texas Commission on Judicial Conduct. He had been a member of the board of All Saints Episcopal School and the East Texas Symphony Orchestra. He had been a vestryman in his parish. Although not a Croatian, Justice Bass was a member of the national board of the Croatian American Association during Croatia's war for independence. Justice Bass was preceded in death by a daughter, Julia Alexandra Bass, Journal Clerk of the Texas House of Representatives. He is survived by his wife of 69 years, Patsy Ann McMurray Bass; a son, James William Bass III, M.D., and wife Dana Taylor Bass of Tyler, Texas; a daughter, Leslie Suzanne Bass and husband David Hudson of Tyler; and a daughter, Elizabeth Eaton Bass and husband Joseph Newman of Sidney, British Columbia. He is also survived by grandsons James William Bass IV and wife Ashley Jones Bass of Conroe, Texas; and Zachary Taylor Bass of Tyler. A short funeral service will take place Saturday, June 28, at 2:30 p.m. at Holly Springs United Methodist Church, Martin's Mill, Texas. Pastor: Katlyn Britton. | 50394 | U.S. Navy Cruise Book Captain Raymond Henry Bass Captain Raymond Henry Bass was graduated from the U.S Naval Academy with the commission of Ensign, in 1931. His first sea duty, in 1931-1933, was in the aircraft carrier Lexington. He then went from the largest ship to the smallest, switching to submarines in 1933. As a junior officer, his submarine duty included tours of duty in the S2-, Porpoise, and Snapper. He was skipper of the S-20 when the U.S entered the war in 1941. There followed two and a half war years in command of the submarines Plunger and Runner II in the Pacific. Under his command, the Plunger made six successive patrols, during which the vessel’s torpedoes earned a Navy Unit Citation for his command. The Plunger was the only submarine to succeed in making two round trips into the closely guarded Sea of Japan. Back in the States, he made a speaking tour for Navy school to help spur volunteers for submarine duty and then to command the new submarine, Runner II, which his wife christened. This new submarine reached the Pacific in time to make one patrol off Honshu searching for mines ahead of Admiral Halsey’s fleet. An anti-submarine patrol interfering with this hazardous mission was sunk with three torpedoes. He was on his way into the Sea of Japan for a third time when he was ordered instead to lead a squadron of twelve submarines into Tokyo Bay for the surrender on VJ Day. Following the war, Captain Bass served as a submarine Division Commander in the Canal Zone, and as Operations officer for Commander Submarine Force, Atlantic. In 1951 he was the Navy member of the U.S. team in Copenhagen which negotiated the Greeenland Base Rights Agreement. He commanded Submarine Squadron Ten in 1952-1953. From August 1953 to July 1954 he held command of the APA USS Rockbridge, which was awarded the Amphibious Battle Effiency Plaque for her competition group for the fiscal year ending July 1, 1954. Just prior to relieving Captain Kirkpatrick, Captain Bass terminated a two year tour in the Strategic Plans Division and Long-Range Objectives Group in the Office of the Chief of Naval Operations.
