| 50402 | Undated newspaper from Otoe County, Nebraska JOHN W. BASSETT, SR., 91, UNADILLA, IS DEAD Funeral services for Long-Time Resident will be Saturday. UNADILLA - Special to The News Press - John W. Bassett, Sr., 91, retired farmer and resident of the Unadilla vicinity for 57 years, died Wednesday afternoon at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Oscar Sasseen, in Unadilla. He had been ill the past three weeks and death was caused by a paralytic stroke. Funeral services will be Saturday at the Methodist church in Unadilla, internment in Unadilla cemetery, Rev. C.A. Norman of Beatrice Methodist church, a former Unadilla preacher, will officiate. Mr. Bassett was born Dec. 10, 1847, in Cleveland, Ohio, son of Mr. and Mrs. John Bassett. His father died when John was two years old and Mrs. Bassett and her son moved to her parents home at Northfield, Ohio. She married again when he was seven years old and the family moved to Bedford, Ohio. Here Mr. Bassett finished his education at the Bedford High School. He married Martha Silver at Bedford in 1866 and the couple moved to a farm at Richfield, where they lived for 12 years. They moved to Nebraska with their four children in 1882 to farm three-quarters of a mile east of Unadilla. After 21 years on the place, they moved to town to the G.B. White place. Mrs. Bassett died April 21, 1915, in Unadilla. Mr. Bassett was a charter member of the Methodist church here, which he helped found in 1883. He took an active part in community affairs and was an ambitious temperance worker. He helped to organize and served as secretary of the Farmers Elevator for 15 years before it was sold to Farmers Co-Operative. He is survived by a son, John Jr., and a daughter, Mrs. Oscar Sasseen, both of Unadilla, and 11 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren. Deceased children are Nannie Dill, who died at the age of 5, Lillie May, 34, and William C., 43. Mr. Bassett kept a diary for the past 70 years, running through Lincoln's assassination, his early manhood in Ohio, the immigration to the West before Unadilla was incorporated and including the latest history of the town and world events. He remained in fine health until his recent illness and until his health broke slightly three years ago, took daily walks of two or three miles. He still made his daily trips to town for the mail, however, and visited his farm, now occupied by his grandson, J. Ivan, regularly. | Bassett, Nancy Dill (I15)

| 50403 | Undated Scrapbook Clipping from Karen Fyock Homer C. Bassett HOMER C. BASSETT - At the home of his brother, in Milledgeville, Ill., on Tuesday, Nov. 21, 1893, of consumption, Mr. Homer C. Bassett, aged 34 years 2 months and 1 day. Homer Bassett was born September 20, 1859, in Ogle County, Illinois, where he spent his boyhood days. He was by trade a jeweler and had also attended an optical College in Chicago for some time, but the last six years of his life were spent in the jewelry store of H. J. Smith, Racine Wisconsin. He had three hemorrhages of the lungs last May at which time he came to the home of his mother at Polo, where he remained until September when he came to Milledgeville to engage in the jewelry business with his brother, F. J. Bassett; but a few weeks ago, he was seized with hemorrhages, and became unable to leave his room. The deceased leaves a mother, the father having died 7 years ago, two sisters, Mrs. Ives who is on the old homestead, in Ogle county, and Miss Jenette Basset who resides in Chicago; also three brothers, E. W. of Jacksonville, Ill., E. of Granite Falls, Minn, and F. J. of Milledgeville, Ill. Mr. Bassett was a young man of good principles, and was highly esteemed by all who knew him, and through his lingering illness, he endured great suffering without a word of complaint. Mrs. Bass age 93 passed away on Thursday, February 29, 2024 while at Morrell's Nursing Home with her loving family by her side. Born on May 26, 1930, in Chesterfield, SC, Nita's journey was one filled with love, laughter, and a deep faith that guided her every step. She dedicated her working years to the Darlington County Council on Aging before retiring, leaving a legacy of service and compassion. Those who knew Nita will always remember her for the love she poured into everything she did. Whether she was whipping up delicious meals in the kitchen, filling the church with beautiful music from the piano, tending to her garden and flowers, or sharing her unwavering faith in Jesus Christ, Nita's presence brought light and joy to those around her. She is survived by her loving family: sons Steve Grant, Hartsville, Tony B. His death was due to a complication of diseases, including paralysis. The funeral took place this afternoon from the Methodist Episcopal Church of West Fairfield, the services being in charge of the Rev. George Grant, of the Bolivar M.E. Church. Burial was made in the West Fairfield Cemetery. The pallbearers were John Murphy, John McBerney, Leonard Hofecker, Samuel McDowell, George Cummins, and Harry Hamlon. The deceased was born at Butterton, England, January 16, 1842, and was married there September 9, 1861, to Miss Emma Lomas, who survives him. Mr. and Mrs. Bassett came to America in 1873 and located in Allegheny County, where they resided until 1879, when they located in Johnstown. Mr. Bassett helped build the St. Clair dam in Lower Yoder Township. After the completion of the dam Mr. Bassett helped to lay the water main from the Millcreek dam to Johnstown, his superintendant being the late James Williams. Mr. Bassett worked for the local company, which was known as the Johnstown Water & Gas Company, for a period of 25 years before removing to his farm in Westmoreland County. For a while after the Bassett family came here from Allegheny County they made their home near the St. Clair dam, later removing to a farm in Westmoreland County, where they resided before removing to West Fairfield. Mr. and Mrs. Bassett celebrated their golden wedding anniversary in 1911, when many Johnstowners participated. Besides his widow, Mr. Bassett is survived by these children: Joseph H., of 195 Barron avenue; William E., of Conneaut Lake, Pa., a minister in the Erie Conference of the Methodist Episcopal Church; Annie, wife of James McBerney, of near Fort End, Pittsburg; Harry, of West Taylor Township; Arthur, also of West Taylor Township, and Miss Minnie, at home. There are also 20 grandchildren. The deceased was a member of the West Fairfield Methodist Episcopal Church and was a charter member of the Ancient Order of Foresters. MRS. EMMA BASSETT, AGED 83, SUCCUMBS Deceased Was Widow of Joseph Bassett, at One Time Water Co. Foreman Mrs. Emma L. Bassett, widow of Joseph Bassett, whose health had been impaired for a long time, died this morning at the home of her son, Joseph H. Bassett, 195 Barron avenue, Eighteenth Ward, aged 83 years. Her death was due to general debility. She had been bedfast for a week. The deceased, whose maiden name was Emma Loomis, was born in England and was married there a long time ago to Joseph Bassett. The Bassett family came to Johnstown a long time ago and settled in West Taylor Township. Mr. Bassett was for a long time a gang foreman for the Johnstown Water Company. His death occurred at West Fairfield, Westmoreland County, in July, 1916. Seven children, 22 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren survive Mrs. Bassett. The sons and daughters are Joseph, at whose home Mrs. Bassett passed away; William pastor of the Methodist Episcopal Church at Sugar Grove in the Erie Conference; Anna, wife of James McBurney, at present in the State of Florida; Hannah, wife of Frank Lesiter, of Pittsbugy, Harry Bassett of West Taylor Township, and Mss Minnie Bassett, at home. Mrs. Bassett was a member of Calvary Methodist Episcopal Church. Funeral services will be held at noon Saturday at the Bassett home in Morrellville by the Rev. Thomas H. Morris, the funeral party to leave between 1 and 2 o'clock for West Fairfield, where interment will be alongside the remains of her husband. | Bassett, Minnie (I207)

| 50417 | Union County Times, 7 March 2023 Sidney Bass By Cliff Smelley Sidney ?Sid? Bass, 84, of Starke passed away at his home Saturday, March 4, 2023, following an extended illness. He was born June 2, 1938, in Boston, Massachusetts to Jacob and Ethyl ?Linnick? Bass. He enlisted with the United States Army at the age of 17 and was stationed three years in Hawaii. Prior to retirement. He was a tax advisor for H & R Block. In 2004, he and his wife moved to Starke and began attending the Church of Christ in Melrose, where he became very involved and active. He enjoyed preaching, was an avid Patriots and Florida Gators fan, and he was a member of the American Legion Post #202 in Keystone Heights. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister, Sally. He leaves behind his loving wife of 61 years, Jeraldine ?Jerry? ?O?Leary? Bass of Starke; and their children, Sheriann Purdy, Kathleen (Raymond) Simmons, Cynthia Bass, and David (Tracey) Bass; along with a brother, Lawrence (Lorie) Bass. Also left behind are his grandchildren, P. J., Nick, Erin, Logan, Derick, Britaney, Thomas, Sammy, and David Jr.; and great-grandchildren, Cyrus, Brock, and Kya. Also left behind is his cat, Lucy; and dog, Bubba. Funeral services were held Wednesday, March 8, at Jones-Gallagher Funeral Home Chapel with Pastor Gene Morgan officiating. Mrs. Watts was born in Chester Feb. 7, 1938, a daughter of the late John Joe Bass and Carrie Lou Feaster Bass. She attended Chester High School, was a member of Salem Baptist Church and was retired from Springs Industries. Surviving in addition to her husband are two daughters, Angela Watts Flynn of Rock Hill and Dolly Ann Watts of Lancaster, Calif.; a son, Ernest Lee Watts Jr. of Columbia; two brothers, Joseph T. Bass of Chesnee and Wylie A. Bass of Carlisle; and two sisters, Fran Bass Wilson and Sarah Bass Sistrunk, both of Carlisle. Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. today at Salem Baptist Church by the Rev. Don Leslie and the Rev. Alvin Biggerstaff, minister to the deaf. Burial will be in Chester Memorial Gardens. Shewas born on April 5, 1917, in Manchester, to Adelard and Rose (Gaudreau) Bessette. She was a lifelong resident of Manchester. Prior to her retirement in 1979, she was employed at Felton Brush for many years. Members of her family include a daughter, Judith A. Dickson of Manchester; and nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband, Robert Dickson, and by her son, Bruce R. Dickson, who died in 1956. IN HER LIFE: She is also survived by Benjamin Bulis, Sarah Bessette, Maggie Bessette-Johnson, and many loving nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews. All her life she loved watching the progress of all the children in her family, spending long hours near the ocean, and loved to be doing anything. SERVICES: There are no calling hours. He was born in Sandown, N.H., on Dec. 12, 1922, the son of the late Raymond K. Bassett and Priscilla Knights. He is survived by his best friend and wife of 64 years, Shirley Caraway Bassett of Naples; one daughter, Cheryl Spence of Naples; four sons, Charles Jr. of Freeport, Bahamas, Thomas of Newfields, N.H., Stephen of Fremont, N.H., and Jon of North Hampton, N.H. | 50422 | Union Leader, August 21, 2013 Stanley Bassett Coville (Picture included) TAMWORTH - Stanley Bassett Coville, 87, a longtime community leader of Tamworth, and a forester with the New England Forestry Foundation for nearly four decades, died on Aug. 17, 2013. The son of Stanley Coville (Washington, D.C.) and Iris Bassett (Rochester, N.Y.), both graduates of Cornell University, Stan was born on Jan. 22, 1926, in Rochester, N.Y., and grew up in New Lisbon, N.J. He graduated from Pemberton High School and Pennsylvania State University, where he was president of his fraternity, Phi Kappa Sigma, and also of the campus Christian Association. His love of the outdoors, and especially the White Mountains, came from his family's roots in agriculture and horticulture. His grandfather, Frederick V. Coville, who was the chief botanist for the U.S. Department of Agriculture, led the development of the hybridization of the modern cultivated blueberry. The True Blu blueberry brand, and its delicious berries, were the product of a cooperative of New Jersey and North Carolina berry farmers, led by Stan's father. As a boy, Stan spent summers working in blueberry fields, learning the production process of one of the most successful blueberry operations on the East Coast. Stan's love of New Hampshire came from childhood summers in Greenfield, where his family vacationed each August after the blueberry harvest. He decided early on that he would grow up to be a forester in New Hampshire. After college and a summer fighting forest fires in California, he worked for the New England Forestry Foundation for 38 years. Later, based in Wonalancet, a hamlet of Tamworth, Stan worked as an independent land surveyor and forester. His contributions to sustaining good land and forestry practices in the state of New Hampshire were recognized by many organizations, including the American Forestry Institute, the Society of American Foresters, and the Carroll County Cooperative Extension Council. He married Nancy Read on Aug. 25, 1950 - together this week for 62 years. With his support she started the first kindergarten/preschool in Tamworth, where she continues her work 50 years later. Stan was a dedicated community member, serving on the Tamworth School Board for 10 years, the Tamworth Outing Club for 62 years, as a member of the vestry of St. Andrew's Church, and as a founding member of the Wonalancet Preservation Association. He lived his passions as a friend of the New England Sled Dog Club, square dancing in Tamworth, and baseball for all ages. Stan is survived by wife Nancy, his daughter Andrea, son Ned, sister Marie, and six grandchildren, Mackenzie, Nicholaus, Read, Dean, Zachary and Sophia, who adored him.. services: A memorial service will be held on Saturday, Aug. 31, noon, at the Wonalancet Chapel, next to the Coville home. Born on June 1, 1943, Bert was the oldest son of the late Lawrence and Blanche (Bassett) Leonard. He lived much of his childhood with his late aunt and uncle, Helen and Bob Agan, in White River Junction, Vt. He was the loving husband of Mary P. Leonard and the late Sandra Geratowski; devoted father of Pamela J. Leonard of Lebanon, and dedicated stepfather of Leah (Jason) Meehan of South Boston and Renee (Jason) Marshall of Beverly, Mass, grandsons Kevin and Brian. Bert is also survived by his brothers and sisters: Lawrence (Linda) Leonard Jr. of Lebanon; Patricia (George) Blanchard of Lebanon; Stanley (Linda) Leonard of Kings Chapel, N.C.; Delina Nichols of Canaan; and John (Donna) Leonard of Lebanon; his great-aunt, Mary Johnson, of White River Junction, Vt. He was predeceased by his sister, Ann Tolbert. He leaves behind cousins, nieces and nephews, great-nieces and nephews, great-great-nieces and nephews. At the age of 17 he joined the United States Air Force. Following his discharge, he began employment with the Lebanon Fire Department, where he worked as a full-time firefighter from 1967 until retiring in 1988 with the rank of captain. He then became a member of the call department from 1988 until 2010, when he became a lifetime member of the Lebanon Fire Department. Bert worked as a special police officer in Lebanon for eight years and in Hanover for 23 years. For the last five years, he worked for Merchant's Auto in Hooksett. He served as the Grafton County representative on the executive board of the New Hampshire State Firemen's Association from 1967 until 2013. During his last two years, he served as sergeant at arms. On Nov. 14, 2015, he was elected NHSFA vice-president emeritus. Bert was also on the Lebanon City Council for eight years, and from March 2000-2001, he served as assistant mayor. Barbara was born in Steelton, PA on July 14, 1929. She is predeceased by her parents, Dr. J. Reese and Grace (Enterline) Beyrent. Barbara graduated from Steelton High School as class valedictorian with the class of 1947. She then went on to Cornell University where she majored in early childhood development and was a member of the Chi Omega Sorority. Barbara graduated from Cornell University summa cum laude. While attending Cornell, Barbara met fellow student George H. Bassett of Fremont, NH. Upon graduation, in 1951, they were married and made their permanent home on the Bassett family farm in Fremont. Here they lived and raised a family consisting of three daughters and one son. In 1968, Barbara began her teaching career at the Ellis School in Fremont. There she taught 3rd grade to multiple generations until she retired in 1995. Barbara made many friends at Ellis School, both teachers and parents, and loved that her previous students would reach out to her on Facebook long after she retired. Barbara was an avid reader and would always have a book or two in progress on any given day. Her love for reading is what prompted her to take the position as the Fremont Librarian in 1984, a position she held until 2011. For many years, the library was in an old one-room school house at the corner of Beede Rd. and Main St. and it was not even equipped with running water. Barbara was instrumental in the planning and design of the new Fremont Public Library and she used a large portion of her own funds to completely automate the library system. Her strong passion for reading was a gift that she passed on to her children and grandchildren. Barbara's sense of community also led her to accept the position as Fremont Town Treasurer. Barbara dutifully held this position for more than 20 years during which time she purchased her first Apple 2-C computer and worked tirelessly to learn about the new technology and to finally put all of the town records onto the first accounting spread sheets. She was a woman of many talents. From knitting beautiful sweaters to fine embroidery work to making incredibly gorgeous hooked rugs, she always had a project in the works. She was also an accomplished classical pianist and loved listening to a variety of composers while working on her projects. However, her greatest talent was the unconditional love and support she provided for her family. She will long be remembered as a loving mother, best friend and our Mimi. Her family includes her son Reese and his wife Beth of Fremont. She resided for 30 years with Reese, Beth and their three children, Graham, Haley and Reese. Her daughters and grandchildren, who were always close by, include Ann Bassett Gulla of East Walpole, MA and her son Ryan; daughter Joan Bassett Dow of Milton, MA and her daughter Cameron; daughter Connie Bassett Mercier of Auburn, NH and her children Joel and Quinn. Following her graduation from Keene Teacher's College she spent time in Vermont, teaching and also raising her family. She returned to Sandown in 1981 and immediately became a dedicated supporter of the Sandown Public Library. She was a member of the Friends of the Library for more than 25 years and served the town as a library trustee for two terms and worked at the Sandown Public Library for more than 18 years. She was also an active member of St. Matthew United Methodist Church, the Timberlane Hampstead Sanborn Retired Educators Association, the Sandown 60+ Club and the Old Meeting House Historical Association of Sandown. IN HER LIFE: In 2009, for all her selfless hard work and countless hours of volunteering, Hazel was honored as Sandown Citizen of the year. She enjoyed gardening and canning, feeding and caring for the birds, watching the Red Sox and taking care of her grandchildren. Carl, son of the late George Chappell and Pauline (Bassett) Chappell, was born in Nashua, NH on May 12, 1954 and was the youngest of four children. He spent his childhood on his family's farm on Federal Hill running wild, playing jokes on people, and moving a lot of hay bales. In November of 1972, at 19 years old, he married the love of his life, Sally Lynn Curtis and they shared 48 years of a marriage that was full of love, family, faith, and hard work. They had three children that they raised on their Osgood Road dairy farm while milking cows every morning and night. Their love was something everyone could see and strived to find for themselves. A true love story. Carl had deep roots in Milford and Clarksville, NH. He spent many years serving his community on the Milford Fire Department and most likely knew every field and farmer in town. He and Sally spent countless days at their camps in Clarksville, enjoying the great northern woods of NH together and building homes where everyone felt welcome. It was a lot of hard work, but for anyone that knew Carl, he was never afraid of a little hard work. Above all, Carl was deeply devoted to his faith in God and kept an open home in Milford as well as Clarksville, for anyone who wanted to visit. He happily held countless babies, reveling in every new generation of family. He celebrated every new grandchild with enthusiasm and they became the light of his life. He was always known to have a ready smile, an open heart, and was quick with a joke. He never failed to lend a hand at a moment's notice and was always willing to jump in whenever the need arose. Carl is survived by his wife, the love of his life, Sally; brothers Roger and Kent and sister Norma. His son Duane Chappell and daughter-in-law Andrea Chappell. His son Dean Chappell and daughter-in-law Sarah Chappell. His daughter Mamie Miles and his son-in-law Jobe Miles. His grandchildren Robin, Calista, Brody, Lillian, Shelby, Molly, Natalie, Arianna, and Penelope and his bonus-grandkids Cade Smith, Wyatt Smith, and Leah Pflaum. After retiring to Ossipee, she became a member of the Moultonville United Methodist Church and later the Boscawen Congregational Church, where she was active with the church ladies groups. She was a talented pencil sketcher and water color artist and was well known for her baking. IN HER LIFE: She is survived by her two sons, Russell Bassett and his wife Pat of Barrington, and Fred Bassett and wife Lori of Northwood; her daughter, Kathy Reed and her husband Ron of Boscawen; 14 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren, also many nieces, nephews and several cousins. He was a U.S. Army Irving was co-chairman and very instrumental in the building of the new fire station in Sandown. He worked as a plumber for many years and served as a plumbing inspector for the town of Sandown for a number of years. In addition, Irving served as a Sandown road agent for several years and a Sandown cemetery sexton for over 30 years. In 1999, Irving was named Citizen of the Year. Irving was a wonderful husband, father, grandfather, brother and was dearly loved by his family. He loved his involvement with the fire department and other town functions. He was loved and respected by so many in the town of Sandown. Irving enjoyed gardening and spending time around his home. He was director of the union's organizing from 1970 to 1985, when he was appointed secretary-treasurer. Mrs. Bassett, who had lived in Ritzville, Medical Lake, Dayton and Spokane, was a resident of Okanogan for 35 years. He was a Navy veteran of World War II. He was a coach for Little League baseball teams, and a member of the Wahconah Country Club and American Legion Post 68. He also operated Pine Island Dairy Goat Farm in Westhampton for 12 years and the former Riverdale Cash Market in West Springfield. He retired in 1986. Born in West Medford, he attended Mount Vernon Academy in New York, and Cook Academy in Watkins Glen, N.Y. He moved to Westhampton in 1936. He was a 49-year member of the Seventh Day Adventist Church in Northampton's Florence section and former church assistant treasurerr and a Sabbath School superintendent and teacher. He played clarinet in the former Easthampton Legion Band and was clarinet soloist in various churches. He was Southampton's oldest resident, and received the the town's Gold Cane in 1991. He as also a member of the Westhampton Council on Aging. His wife, the former May Kibbe, died in 1992. He leaves two sons, Rev. Leroy C. of Washington Island, Wis., and Russell B. of Kelso, Wash.; four daughters, Shirley M. Fuller of Troy, N.H., M. Jewell Horrocks and F. Gene was born on October 11, 1932, in Louin, MS, to J.B. and Thelma (Burnett) Bassett. In addition to his parents, siblings who predeceased him are James (Mable) Bassett, Lucile (Boots) Rives, Bobbie (Butch) Burt, George (Inez) Bassett, his twin Mary Jo (Sam) King, and brother-in-law Cleo McCormick. He was an outstanding athlete and leader at Louin High School, worked pipelines from Texas to Alabama and was drafted into the Army and served as a diesel engineer in the 101st Airborne in Europe. While there, he was recruited to play football for the Air Force and was an all-star in the European Military Conference setting football records for longest touchdown return and another for speed. He was a proud alumnus of Mississippi State University (B.S.) and University of Southern Mississippi (M.Ed.) He followed His call to educate and coach in both Jones County, MS, and St. Bernard Parish, LA. for nearly 40 years. He taught others about loving people unconditionally, acting with priorities and purpose, and most of all, living life for Christ. Roy Gene Bassett, Sr, was the epitome of a gentleman who showed everyone love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, mercy, wisdom, acceptance, gentleness, and self-control. He was the son of Charles Bass and Lillian Bass, the eldest of five siblings. The family, along with his younger brother Oscar, relocated to New York City, when his father attained a position with the Pullman Porter. Calvin joined the military after high school. He served in the 92 Infantry Division. This division was known as the Buffalo Soldiers, stationed Italy. He worked many years as Head of Security for a high end security firm. He retired from this firm as Head of Security. Calvin was a loving father, uncle, cousin and friend to everyone. He loved his personal/faithful commitment to the Riverside Church and its community. He devotedly served as an usher for many years. There, he established and maintained loving/devoted relationships with a countless number of parishioners and other devotees. This also includes Reverend Coffin, Reverend Forbes, Reverend Northern, and other various clergy, to name a few. Calvin spent his free time volunteering at the Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture, playing bridge, and watching various sports games on TV. During the summer months he loved visiting Martha?s Vineyard, in Massachusetts. He especially loved getting up early and walking along the beach?s shore. There he would meet, greet and engage in conversations with other early risers. Once there, he was famously known to be wearing his Forever 21 and/or President Barack Obama T-shirts. These t-shirts caused compliments, applause and more conversations. Calvin loved sports, especially tennis, skiing in Aspen, Colorado, football and golf. He also enjoyed movies, documentaries, reading Black History Literature and keeping up the political climate. Calvin was always there to help relatives and friends with advisement and/or what was needed to resolve. He also loved to travel and sharing his experiences/encounters. Calvin succumbed to his various health ailments at The Riverside Rehabilitation Center on February 5, 2020. Calvin is survived by: his son, Peter; his sister, Ruby; along with several nieces, nephews and cousins. Bassett Nature International Weekly Journal of Science March 30, 1946 The retirement of Prof. Henry Bassett from the chair of chemistry at the University of Reading will shortly remove from that University one of its most interesting figures. Student and collaborator of Bamsay, Baeyer and Donnan, he went in 1912, after work in London, Munich, Nancy and Liverpool, to take up his chair at a time when the young College was first aspiring to full university status. Under his guidance his department played its full part in the attainment of that dignity in 1926, and as dean during 1924-30 he must be credited in a special degree with the smooth and successful assumption by the Faculty of Science of the responsibilities of independence. In those formative years, Reading, with its growing fame in agriculture, was fortunate in having such a man as Bassett for its professor of chemistry. An analyst and inorganic chemist of repute, his wide knowledge of science covers not only the usual domain of chemistry but also extends far into the realms of geology and hydrography, botany and zoology. Besides his well-known phase-rule studies, his researches, which he still continues with unabated vigour, have led to papers on the potassium salts of phenolphthalein, the colour changes of cobalt chloride solutions, the conditions of formation of dithionates, the role of calcium phosphate in bone structure, and many others. A special feature of his work which reflects his knowledge of geology is his use of optical, morphological and X-ray crystallography in identifying research products.
