| 50458 | Unknown newspaper Charivari Fun Ends Up In Wild Shooting Spree The fun and games at a charivari for a Liberal couple nearly ended in tragedy December 29, 1947. Liberal's Main Street was crowded with people ready to give Luther Mattingly and his bride a proper beginning to married life. One of the crowd, the bride's grandson, Don Sherron, had brought along a shotgun to add to the festive atmosphere. As the crowd was headed toward the restaurant Mattingly owned, the shotgun accidentally went off. The surprised boy then accidentally jammed the gun and the crowd was sprayed with round after round of buckshot from the automatic pump gun. No one was seriously injured, but eight people required medical attention from Dr. Kneeland. According to the published report, the doctor spent most of the evening digging buckshot out of the victims. Among the injured were Miss Jean McClendon, a Barton City schoolteacher, who was hit in the forehead and the knee; Lenore Hamm, hit in the knee and the stomach; Mr. and Mrs. Tom Blackman and their daughter, Judy, were hit in the legs; and Oliver Webb was hit in the thumb. Unknown Newspaper Luther Mattingly Dies Luther Mattingly, 71, a resident of Burgess, Missouri, the past six years, died unexpectedly at his home at 10 a.m. Monday. Mr. Mattingly had been mowing the yard, went and sat down in a chair when he suffered a heart attack. Mr. Mattingly was born September 29, 1888 in Barry County, Missouri. He was near a lifetime resident of Barton county, and a retired farmer. He married Mrs. Minnie Sherron of Liberal December 25, 1947 in Minden. Survivors in addition to the widow of the home are three daughters and one son by a former marriage, Mrs. Bertha Hull, Chetopa, Mrs. Mahalla Tucker, Kansas City, Mrs. Geneva Murphy, Kansas City, Missouri, Harold Mattingly, Liberal; two brothers, Ernest Mattingly and Brit Mattingly, both of Exeter, Missouri; three sisters, Mrs. Trilla Clardy and Mrs. Mary May, both of Exeter, and Mrs. Lillie Nichols, California; sixteen grandchildren and seven great grandchildren. Funeral services were conducted Wednesday afternoon at the Church of God of Prophecy in Liberal with the Reverend C.W. Risner of Olathe, Kansas, officiating. Reverend and Mrs. Richard Talbott sang, "I'm Moving Across the River" and Reverend Talbott sang, "I Know Who Holds Tomorrow" as a solo. Mrs. Clarence Whisler accompanied the singers. Casketbearers were Earl Mays, Fred Bartelli, Sr., George Gesslein, Norman Crain, Marion Johnson, and Rex Jackman. Fisk Passes Away Death Comes This Morning Following Several Weeks of Illness Mrs. Ellice Antoinette Warner Fisk, 77, widow of the late Ansel Duane Fisk, died at her home, 47 Clinton Street, at 8:45 this morning, following an illness of several weeks. Mrs. Fisk was born March 18, 1954 in McGraw, the daughter of Theron T. and Eliza A. Bassett Warner. She had lived in Homer about 55 years. Mrs. Fish leaves two sons, Leonard of Homer and Earnest of Cortland; one daughter, Mrs. Edith Dickinson of Homer; two grandsons, Gerald and Duane Dickinson of Homer; three granddaughters, Mrs. William Hinckle of New Milford, N.J., and Misses Leita and Lucille Fisk of Cortland; one great grandson, Douglas Hinckle of New Milford, N.J., one brother, Frank Warner of Homer and two sisters, Mrs. George Walker of Marathon and Mrs. R.J. Bassett who died on Saturday, April 17, 2004 in Auburn. He was 87. Mr. Bassett was born on April 1, 1917 in Reed Point, Montana and lived in the Seattle area since 1926. He was a graduate of Highline High School in 1934. He served in the U.S. Army in Egypt during World War II. Later, he owned his own bookkeeping company for many years, working with the insurance industry. Mr. Bassett loved the outdoors, and was an avid hiker, backpacker, and mountaineer. After retirement, he served as an Ombudsman for senior centers and nursing homes and enjoyed helping people go on outings. He was a member of the Christian Science Church in Burien and later in Kent. Survivors include his wife of 58 years, Dorothy J., a son, Michael, of Federal Way and daughters, JoAnn Haberer of Vancouver, and Patricia Saurdiff of Enumclaw. Still Hospital, Jefferson City. She was 86 years of age. She was the widow of Dave Eidson. She was born Sept. 22, 1882, at Iberia, the daughter of George and Jane (Smith) Groves. Her first marriage on Oct 21, 1900, was to Frank Bass who passed away. She is survived by one daughter, Mrs. Lora Abbett of Eldon; one grandson; one sister, Mrs. Blanche Wilson of Independence; and one brother, Robert Groves of Iberia. For the past six years Mrs. Eidson had made her home with her son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. Ernest Abbett, first near Bagnell and then for two years at Camdenton before moving to Eldon three years ago. Mrs. Eidson was a member of the Assembly of God Church at Iberia. Funeral services were held at 3 p.m. Sunday at Phillips Chapel in Eldon. The Rev. George Flora officiated. | 50470 | Unknown Source, 28 July 2014 Anglican priest mourned in Hay River Psalm 23 in the Old Testament comforts Christians by reminding them they are loved as they move forward on life?s path, guided by faith. The late Georgina Bassett, the first Anglican Priest of Slavey descent in the Arctic Diocese, selected the Bible passage to be read at her own celebration of life, which was held on July 11, three days after she died at age 58 of breast cancer. Also known as The Lord?s Prayer, the words are familiar to members of the congregation of St. Andrew?s Anglican Church in Hay River, where Bassett ministered as priest since her ordination on Sept. 12, 2012. Love was the theme that inspired her ministry, according to longtime friend Gail Marshall. ?Love of the lord. Love of the family. Sharing with your community. Giving of yourself,? Marshall said. Love is a beautiful thing, and Bassett honoured that beauty by lavishly decorating the church to inspire parishioners anew each season. Christmas was spectacular. She applied her love for others by more practical means by managing the Hay River Thrift Shop, which was always stocked to almost to the ceiling with gently-used and affordable clothes and other inexpensive goods for sale. ??Love? to her was a verb, not a noun,? said Bishop David Parsons of Yellowknife. ?She put it into action throughout her life.? Bassett greeted her community with compassion, gently helping families and individuals navigate life?s anxieties and tragedies with patience and calm. Her personality put people at ease, said Marshall. ?I think a lot of times they were reassured and comforted by her and they were reminded that there is a greater God that will provide for them,? she said. Bassett immersed herself in the church about a decade ago, studying as she worked toward her 2009 deaconship, then studied more as she prepared for her priesthood. Throughout her life, inside and outside the church, she dedicated herself to her community. ?She was a very shy young woman who blossomed into a true humanitarian,? said Marshall. ?She always had a strong sense of community and she volunteered for many, many things. She always had a strong faith and a strong calling from the Lord, ever since she was a little girl, but in the last 10 years she assumed more and more responsibility in the church. For her it was a joyous time.? Her commitment to her community was recognized by the Hay River Chamber of Commerce in early 2012 when she was named 2011 Citizen of the Year. Bassett was co-owner of Bassett Petroleum alongside her husband of four decades, Steve Bassett. She is survived by four sons and four daughters-in-law and seven grandchildren, ranging from age one to 16. ?Her prime focus was family,? said Parsons. ?Georgina was a dedicated wife and a dedicated mother for her sons and grandmother for her grandchildren.? Bassett arranged her celebration of life to be held in the Hay River Pentecostal Church, which is larger than St. Andrew?s. The church?s 400 seats were full for the event, and another 200 people stood in the parking lot out of respect, said Marshall. Bassett?s advice to mourners was to move on, she added. ?It was because of her faith that she knew she was going onto something greater beyond here and that?s what she would keep reassuring us with. She would tell us, ?life is going to go on and it?s going to change, but there is a reason that I am going on.? There was another task she was needed for.? Bassett?s loved ones needed that reminder, because a couple of weeks after she died, her second-eldest son, Nicholas Bassett, was scheduled to marry his fiancee Valerie Smith at the Anglican Church in Yellowknife. ??Don?t change the wedding. Go rejoice. Celebrate!? That was her big message to us. And we did. We missed her dearly, but we did what she wanted. ?Live life to its fullest and remember to give thanks for what we have,?? said Marshall. Nicholas and Valerie were married on July 18. The late Georgina Bassett was ordained as an Anglican priest on Sept. 12, 2012. She had been named 2011 Citizen of the Year in Hay River earlier that year. Bassett died of breast cancer on July 8. ? Hanzuk (Picture included) Longtime Anchorage resident Edmour Raymond "Ed" Hanzuk, 75 passed away Sunday morning, January 22, 2012, at his home with his family by his side. Memorial services will be held on Saturday, January 28, at the Anchorage Church of Christ, 2700 DeBarr Rd, at 2 pm. Mr. Hanzuk was born August 28, 1936, in International Falls, Minnesota, the older of two sons, to William and Katherine Hanzuk. He graduated from International Falls High School. He and Merlene Ann Bassett married on December 1, 1956, at Luke Air Force Base in Phoenix, Arizona. They recently celebrated their 55th wedding anniversary. He and his family came to Alaska in August 1972 when he was stationed at Elmendorf Air Force Base. He retired as Senior Master Sergeant in September 1975. He then went to work for Totem Ocean Trailer Express as Maintenance Manager from 1977 to 1995. He resided in Anchorage for 39 years. In his retirement he enjoyed going to Church, sharing life history with family, motorhome traveling, fishing, woodworking, and was a loyal Aces fan. His guide for life was Matthew 6:33, "Seek first His kingdom and His righteousness::". Mr. Hanzuk was a longtime member of the Anchorage Church of Christ, the Alaska Propeller Club for which he served as Vice President and President, and the Alaska Bird Club. She was a jack-of-all-trades and equally capable of fixing a lamp or making drapes and was a great cook and gardener. She had boundless entergy and was mechanically inclined. A hard-working, tough lady, she always found time to give a helping hand to others. At 97, she was still an excellent driver and drove her car all over Green Valley where she lived ro 29 years. She took great care of herself and was determined to live to 100 but our Lord Jesus took her from us. Her husband Warren preceded her indeath but she leaves behind her daughter, Rita Mayer of Green Valley and a son Raymond Bassett of Tacoma, Wash. She leaves four grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. She also leaves behind three sisters and two brothers and nieces and nephews. Lieutenant R.E. Harmer, commander of Fighting Squadron Five with the United States Pacific carriers, advised Mrs. Bass her husband was flying as fighter protection over navy forces when his squadron was attacked by a large group of enemy bombes and fighters. In the battle he lost contact with the rest of his division and was not heard from again. He would have been 27 years of age last September and enlisted as a naval aviation cadet in the naval reserve in February 1941 and was called to duty the next month. He would have been promoted to Lieutenant (jg) in October. Said to be the first alumnus of RPI to fall in action, he taught art at Jefferson High School in Roanoke, which school he attended before coming to Richmond. Bassett, 92, died Oct. 2, 1945, in the Curry Home in Burlington Flats, where he had been a patient for one and one-half years. Mr. Bassett was born Feb. 5, 1842, in Burlington Flats, son of Henry and Catherine Parks Bassett. In 1892, he married Gina? Dyer. For over 50 years he had resided in this village. He was a painter by trade. After the death of his wife 15 years ago, he was cared for by his niece, Mildred Sutherland, who died in March, 1944. He was a charter member of the Mt. Marcum chapter, IOOF, Unadil Forks. For over 25 years he was peace justice. As long as health permitted, he was an attendant of the Seventh Day Baptist Church. Surviving are two nieces, Miss Robie Bassett, Rome, and Mrs. Pearl Johnson, Oakland, Calif.; a grandniece, Mrs. Blanch Mathewson, Cooperstown; two cousins, Claude Mason and Mrs. Avis Schrag, both of Leonardsvill The funeral will be at 2 p.m. tomorrow from the Worden Funeral Home, with the Rev. | 50495 | Utica Observer-Dispatch, Wednesday, May 16, 1947 Linus Bassett Dies in Italy, Mishap Victim First Lt. Linus J. Bassett, 26, son of Mr. and Mrs. Linus M. Bassett, 300 N. Genesee, was killed in an automobile accident, Mother’s Day, May 11, in Italy, where he was stationed with the Army occupation forces. The parents were informed of the tragedy in a telegram from the War Department. The wire reported none of the details but stated a letter would follow. Yesterday they received a cablegram from Lieutenant Bassett’s bride of 11 months, who accompanied him to Italy, saying she was returning by plane with the body. Lieutenant Bassett had served two years overseas during the war, returning early in 1946 and re-enlisting in the occupation forces. He first was mobilized Jan. 6, 1941, in Troop A., 101st Cavalry. He was graduated form Officers Training School July 2, 1943, at Ft. Benning, Ga., and served two years in Texas with the 801st Tank Destroyer Battalion. He went overseas in December, 1944, and served two years in Italy. He returned to the United States early in 1946 and received his honorable discharge. He married the former Geraldine Stone June 9, 1946, in Baltimore. The couple went overseas in October, shortly after Lieutenant Bassett re-enlisted, and were living in Slatlana, Italy. Lieutenant Bassett was born in Utica Jan. 18, 1921, son of Linus and Francis Cheeseman Bassett. He attended St. Francis de Sales School. He was a member of St. Peter’s Church, Charles H. Adrean DSC Post 368, Veterans of Foreign Wars, and the Utica Pup Tent, Military Order of Cooties. Besides his wife and parents Lt. Bassett leaves a brother, William A. Bassett; a sister, Mrs. John Zimmerman; his paternal grandmother, Mrs. Anna Bassett; his maternal grandmother, Mrs. Minnie Cheeseman; two nephews, and several aunts and uncles, all of Utica. | Bassett, Linus Jr. (I36)
