He was born in the town of Morse, (Mass) in 1793 and moved into Rose in 1828, making the journey in the winter with a horse and cutter, bringing with him his wife and his sister - afterwards Mrs. Daniel Lovejoy - and his anvil, his whole worldly possessions. He united with the M.E. Church in 1831, himself, his wife and two others forming the first class in that town. From that time forward his life has been that of the constant Christian. No one was ever known to speak a word against "Uncle Bassett", as he was called by every one. His death was the natural elope of such a life, and one witnessing it could not but exclaim with the heathen prophet, "Let me die the death of the righteous, and may my last end be like his." Thus our early pioneers are going, "Our fathers, where are they, and the prophets, do they live forever." Rose Neighborhood Sketches, page 293 The house just to the north, now nearly destroyed, was long the home of John Bassett and wife, they coming here from the Valley. The blacksmith shop was a little south of the house. It yielded to time some years ago. There are twenty-five acres in the place. Truman Van Tassell, a Methodist ministe traded this place with "Uncle" John Bassett for the latter's village lo These good people were long members of the Methodist Church, but the story goes that "Uncle" John once lost the run of the days of the week and went to work on Sunday in his shop. He was horrified when informed of his profanatio "Uncle" John's old horse was a good........... | Bassett, John (I04456)

Bassett George W. Bassett, a skillful farmer of Fremont, who has met with a fair share of success in his independent calling, is a native of this county, born Feb. 22, 1827, in the town of Epping. His father, Samuel Bassett, who was born in Vermont, in his early manhood settled in Epping, where he married Miss Hannah Peasley. Some time after he removed to Pittsfield, Merrimack County, and was there engaged in teaming and farming for the remainder of his active life. He passed his last days with his son, George W., in Fremont where his death occured June 19, 1872. His first wife, who bore him 4 children, died while in Pittsfield. He subsequently married Sarah Cram, a native of Pittsfield. The children of his first union were: Joseph, who died while serving the Union in the late war; John who is living in N.Y.; Mary Ann, now a resident of Calif; and George W., the subject of this sketch. George W. Bassett began the battle of life when but 8 years of age. Going then to South Haven, this county, he worked on a farm until he was 18. He was afterward engaged in a different place as a farm laborer, and for some time sold charcoal, when he acquired the sobriquet of "Charcoal Bassett". At length by good management he had saved enough money to warrant him in buying his present farm. The property contains 150 acres. Since entering into possession he has made most of the improvements now to be seen on it, besides bringing the soil to a high state of productiveness. He carries on general agriculture, and continues to deal in charcoal. In politics he is a loyal and faithful Republican, never swerving from party allegiance. He was married May 8, 1866 to Mrs. Sarah J. (Beede) Blaisdel. She was the widow of Albert Blaisdel and had one son, Albert B. Her father, a well known farmer of this locality, was also a lumber dealer. Mr. & Mrs. Bassett have 2 children; Joseph and George S. Joseph who married Eva Kimball, of Danville, has one child, George Albert; and he and his family live on the home farm. George S. is in business in Haverhill, Mass. | Bassett, George W. (I7)

As we sit down to write a few lines in behalf of this noble woman we are at a loss to express in words her true worth. Mrs. Bassett was born at Beede Hill, this town, October 18, 1840, the daughter of Horation and Hannah (Fellows) Beede. She was twice married. Her first husband was Albert Blaisdell, of Raymond, and to them was born one son, Albert B., now a well known clothier of Haverhill. Her first husband died at an early age. In 1866 she was married to George W. Bassett, of this town, where they have since resided. To them were born two sons, Joseph P., now representing this town in the legislature, and George S., a popular merchant of Sandown. These upright and manly sons were proud to call her mother, and to us she was next to our mother as she was to many another. Mrs. Bassett was one of those even tempered women with the kindest of dispositions, a smile and cheering word for all, content to live the simple life of a humble farmer's wife, ever brightening the home with her cheerfulness. Many years ago she united with the Methodist Church and has ever been faithful to her vows. She will be greatly misses in the household of her son, Joseph P., whose wife, Eva, has cared for and watched over her during her long illness and the ever faithful grandchildren she loved so well and had just reason to be proud of. Much sympathy goes out to the aged husband. The funeral was held at the home Sunday and was largely attended. Rev. Mr. Sutton officiating. Burial was at the village cemetery. | Blaisdell, Sarah Josephine (Beede) (I8)
