| 50703 | Walter Sage enlisted in Battery F of the Third New York Light Artillery early in the Civil War and died of typhoid fever at Newbern, North Carolina. He was unmarried. Sage Family of Shawnee County, Kansas A Standard History of Kansas and Kansans - (1918) Sage Family of Shawnee County. The name of Sage has been very prominently identified with Shawnee County, particularly in the community around Dover, for a half century or more. The family is one that would prove a valuable contribution to any community. They have been upright and conscientious citizens, have done their share of the development work connected with the raising of a new country to the best standards of civilization, and there is probably not a single member of the family who has not pulled his own weight in the world. The first of this particular family to come from Somersetshire, England, the original seat of the family, to America was Arthur Sage. His parents were Samuel and Elizabeth (Davis) Sage. Arthur located in Onondaga County, New York. His experience in the New World was very gratifying, and the reports he sent back home caused his father Samuel to also come to America. He too was favorably impressed, and about the year 1849 he sent for the other members of the family to join him. Samuel Sage was twice married. None of the children of his first wife ever lived in America. One son of the first marriage was named Aaron and he gained distinction by being selected a member of the Queen's Guard. The children of Samuel Sage by his second marriage were: Arthur, Ann, who married Simon Mayne; John, Alfred, Mark, Samuel, Aaron, Elizabeth, who married Edward Stock; and Walter. The only one of these children who never lived in Kansas was Walter. In September, 1883, he left Sussex to go to sea. He joined the sailing ship Cape Vincent as an apprentice for four years. In 1884 he was elected to act in place of the third officer who was one of seven crew members lost due to a cholera epidemic. He remained acting third officer till the completion of his apprenticeship. In November 1888 he arrived in Melbourne (Australia) with a cargo of timber where he left the Cape Vincent in December. In January 1889 he enlisted in the Victorian Navy. He served in HMVS Nelson, HMVS Cerberus and HMVS Victoria as a signalman. In April 1889 at Leichardt NSW he married Annie Crittal who sailed out from London on the P&O steamer Brittania in March 1891. On July 31st 1900 he left in S.S. Salamis with the naval contingent for active service in China due to the Boxer uprising. In Jun 1901 he arrived back at the Naval Barracks in Williamstown and was later made Yeoman of Signals. " Bacchante." Being in ill-health, in 1886 he resigned his Commission in the Navy, and subsequently adopted the profession of engineering, for which he was fitted both by inclination and aptitude. After 3 years' work with Messrs. Maudslay, Sons and Field, he was elected a director of the company in 1890, and in the following year, on the death of Mr. Richard Sennett, he became Managing Director. His name will be perhaps chiefly remembered in connection with the erection of great wheels " for amusement purposes, especially those at Earl's Court, Blackpool, Paris and Vienna. In 1899, on the dissolution of the business of Messrs. Maudslay, Sons and Field, he founded the Basset Screw and Nut Company at Houdeng, Belgium, designing and erecting for the purpose works covering 3 acres, and he acted as Director of the Company until his death. Mr. Basset was elected an Associate Member of The Institution on the 4th February, 1896, and was transferred to the class of Members on the 2nd February, 1904. Lieutenant Basset before taking up engineering was in the Navy, and was on the Bacchante at the same time as the Prince of Wales and the Duke of Clarence. Deceased succumbed to cancer of the tongue, for which terrible malady he underwent a painful operation a few weeks ago. Memorial services with funeral honors provided by the U.S. Air Force, as well as, the East Texas Patriot Guard Riders will be conducted at 10 A.M., Tuesday, July 10, 2018, at the Walters Funeral Home in Centerville, Texas. An inurnment service will be held at 2:30 P.M. the same day in the Veterans National Cemetery in Houston, Texas. Larry Ray Bass was born August 4, 1950, in Houston, Texas to Roger Ray & Dolores Louise (Griswold) Bass. He was raised in Houston and completed two years of college at Texas A&M. During his childhood, he earned Eagle Scout rank in the Boy Scouts of America, a tidbit of information that Larry was proud to share. Larry also proudly served his country in the U.S. Air Force and was honorably discharged as a sergeant. He spent several years in Alaska as a serviceman, civilian, and Department of Corrections officer. The majority of Larry?s career was spent supervising wastewater treatment in various cities. He also worked for the Brazos River Authority. Larry?s last job was for Texas Workforce Solutions as a coordinator. Larry had a strong need to help those who were less fortunate than him. He spent many hours and money from his own pocket delivering food to the homeless or paying for utilities and grocery bills of those who needed assistance. Larry?s help and time devoted to the local veterans of Leon and surrounding counties was insurmountable. Countless hours of his life were spent helping veterans fill out paperwork, supplying transportation to doctor?s appointments and offering assistance to the family of veterans who had passed away. When Larry had a spare moment, he enjoyed hunting, fishing and, recently working with his brother on a building project. He was a Entered Apprentice ? First Degree of the Centerville Masonic Lodge, Service Officer with the American Legion Post #335, and a Ride Captain in the Patriot Guard. He had lived in the Centerville area for the past twelve years, coming from the greater Dallas area. Larry was preceded in death by his sister-in-law, Debbie Bass, and brother-in-law, Scott Keaton. Surviving family members include high school sweetheart and significant other, Ruth Wakefield of Centerville, Texas; daughter, Cynthia Smith (Michael) of Tucson, Arizona, Alicia Taylor (Anthony) of Crestview, Florida, and Rhonda Bass; brothers, Douglas Bass of Centerville, Texas, Roger Bass of Texas; sisters, Sallie Keaton of Crosby, Texas; Sharla Anderson of California; grandchildren, Michael Pardon, Nicholas Smith, Alexis Taylor, Anthony Taylor, Jr. and honorary granddaughter, Hannah Moore. Larry is also survived by nieces and nephews, Stacey Krecmer, Clint Bass, James Bass, Shelley Arnst, Sarah Jones, Rebecca Keaton, Noah Keaton, Preston Boyd, Jessica Green, and Crystal Warner. He was born September 13, 1907, in Cloud county, the son of George H. and Florence Kelly Bassett. He moved to the Laclede community and attended Laclede elementary school and Wamego high school. He was a farm worker in the Wamego community before he bought a farm near Concordia in 1941. He later farmed in the Wamego and Havensville communities. Mr. Bassett worked for Whelan's Lumber Co., in Topeka from 1954 to 1971; He returned to his farm near Havensville and moved into Onaga after he retired in 1980. He was a member of the Christian church in Havensville; Odd Fellows lodges in Onaga and Louisburg, and Kansas Farm Burea He was married to Winifred George of Westmoreland December 23, 1933. She survives. Other survivors include a foster son, Loran D. George, Topeka; and two brothers, Roy B. Bassett, Washington, Mo., and Floyd Bassett, Wamego. Services were at 2 p.m. Tuesday, September 15, at the Christian chur Havensville. Burial was in Wamego city cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the Christian church in Havensville or the American Cancer Society. BASSETT, MILFORD ONAGA - Milford Bassett, 84, Onaga, died Saturday, Sept. 12, 1992, at Onaga Community Hospital. He was born September 13, 1907, at Cloud County, the son of George H. a Florence Kelly Bassett. They moved to Wamego and he attended Wamego Elementary School. He worked as a farm hand in Wamego and Concordia before buying a farm in Havensville. Mr. Bassett worked for Wheeler Lumber Co. in Topeka from 1953 to 1971. He returned to his farm in Havensville and retired to Onaga in 1980. He was a member of the Havensville Christ Church, Odd Fellows Lodge of Onaga and Kansas Farm Bureau. Mr. Bassett married Winifred George of Westmoreland on Dec. 23, 1933. S survives. Other survivors include two brothers, Roy B. Bassett, Washington, MO; Floyd Bassett, Wamego; and a a foster son, Loren D. George, Topeka. Services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Havensville Cemetery. Mr. Bassett will lie in state today and Monday from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. at Tessendorf Funeral Home in Onaga. | 50720 | Wanda Bassett, 85, Cub Scout pioneer Wanda H. "Kit" Bassett of West Lane, who helped start Ridgefield Little League and pioneered Cub Scouting here, died Sunday, July 20, in Jensen Beach, Fla., her part-time home. She was 85 years old and the wife of Charles Bassett. Mrs. Bassett was born Aug. 6, 1917, on a farm in LaPorte, Ind. She went to LaPorte schools and graduated in 1934 from LaPorte Business College. She then went to work at the college, teaching courses in shorthand, typing and title searching. In 1940, she married her childhood sweetheart. She and Charles Bassett had grown up on adjoining farms in LaPorte. "I taught her how to ride a bicycle when she was 10 years old," Mr. Bassett recalled this week. Mr. Bassett's job as a Pan American World Airlines pilot eventually took them to Long Island in the 1940s, but their desire to live in more rural surroundings led them to Ridgefield. In 1950, when the town had only 4,500 people, they bought a barn on farmland along lower West Lane, near the New York line, and converted it into a home. Sixteen years laters, they moved to a new house they built on the property. mrs. Bassett was a pioneer in providing programs for young people. In 1954, she and Altero "Chick" Ciuccoli joined William W. Allen in helping to start the Ridgefield Little League. Around the same time, she gained permission from the Boy Scouts of America to establish Ridgefield's first Cub Scout group, Pack 47. She was also active in Jesse Lee Memorial United Methodist Church, and was well known for working the "Green Thumb" plant stand at the church's annual Yankee Peddler Fair. Mrs. Bassett was a skilled gardener, specializing in African violets and geraniums. She also liked watching and feeding the birds. She was acoomplished at needlework, including quilting, sewing, knitting and crocheting, as well as hooking rugs. Years ago, she was an active bowler, playing at first in the lanes in the basement of the Congregational Church House on West Lane and later bowling witht he women's league at RidgeBowl. Mrs. Bassett enjoyed traveling. "She traveled the world over during her lifetime," her husband said, "but she always considered Ridgefield her sacred home." "Kit had an infectious personality that won her many friends over the years," Mr. Bassett added. Besides her husband of 63 years, Mrs. Bassett is survived by three sons, Gregory Bassett of Osborn, Maine, Douglas Bassett of Wichita, Kans., and Dennis Bassett of White City, Fla.; a sister, Bernece Simcox of LaPorte; four grandchildren, Anastasia Ruiz, Sharron Bassett, Hilary Bassett, and Lisa Beckham; and two great-grandchildren, Oliva Ruiz and Jesse Beckham. The Rev. Bill Pfohl will lead a memorial service on Thursday, Aug. 21, at 11 a.m. at Jesse Lee Memorial United Methodist Church. She was born May 5, 1932, in Gwynneville, the daughter of Fred and Mary (Keaton) Pollitt. She married John Lee Fox on January 11, 1951, and he preceded her in death on June 26, 2013. Wanda is survived by her son, John C. Fox and wife, Karen of Shelbyville; daughters, Jana Everhart and husband, Teddy, of Shelbyville and Melina Fox and husband, Bob White, of Greensburg; grandchildren, Matthew Fox, Justin Fox, Ted Everhart, Vanessa Stewart and Trisha Fox-Rupert and husband, Rick; and great-grandchildren, Jimmie Gruss, Nathan Everhart, Claire Fox and Reagan Fox. She was also preceded in death by her parents; a daughter, Mara Fox; and sister, Mary Lou Stanton. Wanda was a member of Liberty United Methodist Church. She graduated from Morristown High School in 1950. Wanda was awarded a Sagamore of the Wabash by Governor Evan Bayh. She was the first woman elected as the county chairman of the Democrat Committee. She served 10 years on the state Democratic Committee, and was District second vice chairwoman. She was formerly president of the Shelby County Extension Homemakers. Wanda served on the Shelby County Fairboard as second vice president. Wanda was a member of Daughters of the American Revolution, and served as vice region. Mrs. Miles was born on June 19, 1924 in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, to Comer and Gertrude Bassett. She was raised in Houston, she married George Miles on March 20, 1953. She worked as an accountant and then retired to Allen, Oklahoma in 1983. She had most recently settled in Panhandle, Texas. She was preceded in death by her husband, George Miles. | 50724 | Wapakoneta Daily News, September 4, 2015 Laura Fay Bassitt (Picture included) Laura Fay Bassitt, 88, passed away on Wednesday, Sept. 2, 2015, at 4:24 p.m. at the Lost Creek Care and Rehabilitation Center, Lima. Fay (as she was known by all) was born June 13, 1927, in Hardin County, Ohio, to Charles R. and Pearl R. (Peggs) Johnson, who preceded her in death. Fay met Robert E. (Bob) Bassitt, Sr. at the Lima Roller Skating Rink on Jan. 19, 1947. Robert wrote in his journal, "I met the girl of my life." They were married on horseback at the Labor Day Rodeo in Ada on Sept. 1, 1947. They were together for over 67 years when Robert passed way on April 7, 2015. Bob and Fay were inseparable, dressed alike and known by many. They were loved and will be greatly missed. Fay was a member of the Congregational Christian Church in Lafayette. She had worked as a messenger on roller skates toward the end of WWII at the Lima Locomotive Works. Fay had also worked at Home Service Laundry in Lima, the Truck Stop Restaurant in Beaverdam and Triplett Corporation in Bluffton. She also taught Bible School in Lafayette. Fay was a member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles, Aerie 370. Survivors include two children: Robert E. (Janet ) Bassitt, Jr. of Wapakoneta, and Linda K. But most of all she enjoyed spending time with her family. She also had a great love of animals. Isabelle had worked as a waitress at Sandys Restaurant in Buzzards Bay for many years. | 50736 | Warren County Record, Missouri, Friday, 11 October 2024 Raymond Latrell Bass Raymond Latrell Bass, 94, of Warrenton, Formerly of Jonesburg, passed away on Tuesday, October 8, at Oak Pointe Assisted Living in Warrenton, surrounded by family. Ray was born on September 25, 1930, in Paragould, Arkansas, to Manley Bass and Deana (Eubanks) Bass. At the age of 17, Ray enlisted in the United States Marine Corps. During his four years of service, he was ranked as an E-5 Sergeant and was awarded numerous medals for his extraordinary heroism in combat and his time served in the Korean War. He returned home in January 1952 and married the love of his life, Marilyn Elaine (Voorhees) Bass on October 10, 1952, in St. Louis, Missouri. They raised two loving daughters and spent nearly 72 years together, with Ray passing two days before their 72nd wedding anniversary. Ray and Marilyn lived in Jonesburg, for 46 years. He was on the Berkeley Police Department and Fire Department for many years before going to Airborne Air Freight. He belonged to the Teamsters 600 and eventually retired from Airborne Air Freight. Throughout his life Ray always raised horses, most commonly Belgian horses, and used them to pull wagons. He was in numerous weddings, parades, etc., with them. He spent a substantial amount of time at horse sales and auctions over the years. He was proud of his saddles, harnesses, and wagons, all of which were made at the Amish communities in Clark and Bowling Green, Missouri. He made weekly visits to these areas where he was known as "Uncle Ray" and made sure to always bring treats along with him. Ray was a remarkable person who truly valued both his work and his family. It was inspiring to know someone who could maintain a strong work ethic while also being present for their loved ones. He was a loving and attentive husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. Burial will be in the Mentone Cemetery. Mrs. Morrison died at 2 a.m. Sunday at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Mabel Delano, who resides on the south side of Lake Wawasee. Death followed a serious illness of four and one-half months due to a stroke of paralysis. She was born in Wabash county June 10, 1864, the daughter of William and Sarah Coomler. In 1866, she was married to Joe Morrison, of Grant county. They resided in Grant county until 1901, when they came to this county and engaged in farming near Claypool and Mentone. In 1921 they retired and moved to Mentone where Mr. Morrison died in 1924. An infant daughter also preceded her in death. The deceased was a member of the Mentone Church of Christ. He was an Army veteran of World War II and served in Europe, Africa and the Middle East as an expert rifleman. He received the Silver Star and the Purple Heart. He was a member and past commander of VFW Post 5385, East Providence, and a member of VFW Post 272, Warwick. He was past president of the Warwick Jaycees, and a former member of the Jaycees executive board, and the National Miss America Pagent. Besides his wife, he leaves a son, Paul M. Bassett, with whom he lived; a daughter, Nancy J. Haibon of Warwick; a brother, Oscar Bassett of North Providence; and seven grandchildren. He was the father of the late James E. Bassett, and brother of the late Elliott and Niles Bassett. The funeral was held from Thomas & Walter Quinn Funeral Home, 2435 Warwick Ave., with a Mass of Christian Burial in St. Kevin Church, Sandy Lane.
