Ph.D. 84, of Plymouth, died peacefully the morning of November 3rd, 2021. A visitation will be held Monday, November 15th from 4-7p.m. at Washburn-McReavy Edina Chapel and a memorial service will be held Tuesday, November 16th at 11a.m. at St. Joan of Arc Catholic Church in Minneapolis. Barbara was born on June 18th, 1937 in Grand Rapids, Michigan. She attended the University of Detroit where she earned a bachelor's degree in English and met her husband and father of her children, William. Barbara and her family moved to Mankato, Minnesota in 1968, working and raising their children there. Barbara had a deep passion for learning and teaching, and she was an Instructor at South Central College in Mankato. A lifelong learner, Barbara earned a Ph.D. in Adult Education at the University of Minnesota in 2002. She spent much of her retirement mentoring students at MCTC, traveling the world, and spending time with loved ones. An avid traveler, Barbara contributed to many service trips with Global Volunteers and never missed an opportunity to immerse herself in new cultures. Barbara was a frequent patron of the Guthrie Theater and enjoyed sharing her passion with her friends and family. Barbara always went above and beyond to ensure that her children and grandchildren had every opportunity to learn and grow. Her loved ones will always cherish the memory of her vibrant spirit and positive outlook on life. Memorials preferred to Second Harvest Heartland. Private interment at Lakewood Cemetary. | 50753 | Washington County Arkansas Biographies David F. Hope, one of West Fork Township's most prominent farmers and stock raisers, was born in Campbell County, Tennessee, in 1829. His grandfather Hope came from England with his wife, who was born there, to America at an early day and located in Tennessee, on the Tennessee River, where he followed the occupation of ship carpenter. He reared his family in Knoxville, Tennessee, and was one of the prominent men of that section of the country, dying at the age of seventy years, having lived an honorable, active and useful life. His wife died at the advanced age of one hundred years. Their son, Thomas Hope, was born and reared to manhood in Knoxville, Tennessee, and learned the ship carpenter's trade of his father, after which he located in Campbell County, Tennessee, where he entered a large tract of land and became an extensive slave owner. He was married in Campbell County to Miss Nancy Smith, and by her became the father of ten children. His death occurred at the age of forty-five years, but his widow, who is a member of an old North Carolina family, was born in Tennessee, and is still living and resides with her son Jordan on the old plantation in Campbell County. David F. Hope is their third son, and was educated in the schools of Knoxville. He came to Arkansas in 1851, where he learned the blacksmith's trade, and was married, in 1853, to Louisa Johnson, daughter of James Johnson, by whom he is the father of the following children: Martha J., wife of J.R. Stockbuger; James T.; Mary E., wife of James Basset; Sarah A., wife of Mark Little; Hugh R., John F., Louisa T.C. (deceased); Nancy C., wife of William Yorks, Alice, Benjamin F., George D., and infant deceased, and Elizabeth. After his marriage Mr. Hope located on the West Fork of White River, where he made his home until 1866, and then purchased his present farm of 240 acres. He has eighty acres of improved land, on which is a neat and commodious two-story frame dwelling house, and after years of well-spent labor is now living at his ease, surrounded by the comforts which he has richly earned. | Hope, David F. | 50754 | Washington County News October 3, 2018 David Ewell Bass (1935 - 2018) David Ewell Bass, 83, of Graceville, Poplar Springs Community, passed away Friday, September 21, 2018 at Northwest Florida Community Hospital. David was born on March 27, 1935 in Holmes County to the late William Edrie "Buster" Bass and Ruth Estelle Kelley. A 1953 graduate of Poplar Springs High School, David was drafted into the U.S. Army. He then worked with Gold Kist Peanut and Registers Dairy. He started working in construction with Slingluff, West Florida Enterprises and Horton's Construction for a number of years. David eventually went out on his own along with his boy's and was known for his detail in painting and carpentry. A Dad and "Pawpaw" such as David, leaves his mark in the world through the love he gives his children and grandchildren. David will be missed not only by them, but by everyone who knew him. Proceeded in death by his parents, one son Edrie and one brother Tommy Bass. He is survived by his beloved wife Frances Bass, Todd Bass (Tara), Graceville; David Bass(Jennifer), Noma, Mechele Bass (Greg Bush), Graceville; Shannon Bass Kukla (LTC Matthew Kukla) Huntsville, Alabama, Michael Bass (Jamie), Graceville; seventeen grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. Bass, 93, of Calera, Alabama, formerly of the Poplar Springs Community, Graceville, passed away, Saturday, March 12, 2016 in Shelby Baptist Medical Center. Ms. Jane was born Nov. 10, 1922 in Slocomb, Alabama to the late John Early Woodham and Walcie Lee Ballard Woodham. A 1941 graduate of Poplar Springs High School, Ms. Jane opened Jaymar Fashions in Graceville in 1973 and retired in 1992. Ms. Jane was a people person meeting and making friends over the years. She was a faithful member of Bethel Baptist for more than 40 years, teaching in Sunday School and training union. She was church pianist for 12 years, a member of Women Missionary Union and worked a number of years in Vacation Bible School. She was a current member of Calera Baptist Church, Calera, Alabama. Preceded in death by her husband Lamar Bass, grandson Christopher Bass, parents, six brothers and three sisters. Survived by two sons Roger Lamar Bass, Birmingham, Alabama; Mark Woodham Bass, Jemison, Alabama; sister-in-law Patsy Woodham, Graceville; grandchildren Shannon Minniefield, Jennifer Campbell (David), Blake Bass, Shelly Ridlehoover, Alexa Bass; great grandchildren Jasmine Minniefield, Jamison Minniefield, Jalen Minniefield, Maddie Campbell, Lamar Campbell, Ellie Campbell, Koerper Campbell, Zackery Bass, Colton Bass, Drake Ridlehoover; a host of nieces and nephews. He was born Nov. 12, 1922, in Pike County, Ala., son of the late Calvin Sylvester and Willie Holland Bass. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II. A farmer, he had formerly owned several agricultural businesses. He was a member of Calera Baptist Church. Bass was preceded in death by a grandson, Christopher Lamar Bass. He was born April 29, 1953, in Panama City to Gerald Bass Sr. and Doris Ray Bass. He was Baptist by faith and a member of Northside Baptist Church in Ponce de Leon. Bass owned and operated Advance Copy in DeFuniak Springs for 10 years. He was currently working at Reliable Products in Geneva, Ala., as a press operator. He was an avid outdoorsman. Dutiful son, devoted husband, loving father and grandfather, Keith was born in Pittsburgh, PA on September 10, 1947. He is survived by his beloved and loving wife of 46 years, Sarah "Sally" Boyle; his brother Paul (Debra) Bassett of Chocowinity; sister Beverly (Frank) Hofmeister of Pittsburgh, PA; sons Ken (Colleen) Bassett, Brian (Stacy) Bassett, David (Christine) Bassett, all of Woodbridge, VA; and daughter Sara (Simeon) Zuger of Honolulu HI. Keith found tremendous joy in the love of his grandchildren Kyle, Kyrie, Gavin, Connor, Tyler, Alyssa, Alexandra, Avery, Elijah and Hannah. A graduate of Duquesne University and George Washington University, he retired from 38 years of service in the Federal government as a management analyst for the Office of Child Support Enforcement. Throughout his life, he encouraged his family through his example of service to others. He has volunteered his service and made friends through his work in numerous community activities. He was especially devoted to helping those less fortunate. His charitable works included many years of summer work camps in Virginia to help repair homes, for the past eight years to provide food for the hungry through his favorite charity, the Eagle's Wings program in Washington. Bassett and Mary Dowd Odessa Record September 16, 1937 J.D. Bassett Bassett - J.D. Bassett, former Big Bend banker, died at his home at Spokane on Tuesday morning. Born in Connecticut in 1858, a son of a minister, he lived there a time and received his education at Yale. He moved to Ritzville in 1899. He remained there until 1909 and during his residence there organized 12 banks at points in the Inland Empire, including Odessa. He was the principal shareholder and president of each. For the past 17 years he has been state examiner for the division of municipal corporations at Olympia. Mr. Bassett had a long legislative record, serving in the legislature of Connecticut in 1887 and in Washington, both in the house and the senate. Survivors include three chidlren, Joseph E. Bassett, Okanogan, Washington; Mrs. Harold E. Crawford, Walla Walla; and Miss Emma Bassett, at the home, and four grandchildren. Funeral services will be held Friday at Westminster Congregational church in Spokane, with Dr. Joel Harper officiating. Burial will be in Greenwood Cemetery. Ritzville Journal-Times Thursday, September 16, 1937 J.D. Bassett Dies at Spokane Home J.D. Bassett, first banker in Adams county and deputy state auditor for many years, died Tuesday morning at his home in Spokane. Mr. Bassett moved to Ritzville in 1899 and remained here until 1909, establishing the first bank in Adams county with Ben Martin, brother of W.H. Martin. During his residence here, Mr. Bassett organized 12 banks at various points in the Inland Empire, being the principal stockholder and president of each. He formerly lived in Hartington, Nebraska, and was "Harry" Martin's Sunday school teacher when he was young. For the past 17 years, he was state examiner for the division of municipal corporations at Olympia. He had a long legislative record, serving in the Connectict legislature in 1887 and in Washington, both in the senate and house many sessions. Mr. Bassett was born at Central Village, Connecticut, Janury 6, 1858. His father, graduate of Yale, was in the ministry of the Congregational church more than a quarter of a century. Funeral services will be held tomorrow at Westminister Congregational church in Spokane with services by the Rev. Joel Harper. Mr. Bassett is survived by three children, Joseph Bassett of Okanogan; Mrs. Harold Crawford, Walla Walla; and Mrs. Emma Bassett, at home, and four grandchildren. An Illustrated History of the Big Bend Country Embracing Lincoln, Douglas, Adams and Franklin Counties State of Washington (1904) Hon. John D. Bassett, one of the most widely known bankers in the State of Washington, now living in Ritzville, was born in Plainfield, Connecticut, January 6, 1858, and is descended from an old English family, which came to Connecticut and settled in Guilford in 1660. His father, William E. Bassett, a Congregational minister, was born in New Haven, Connecticut, and his mother, Mary (Dowd) Bassett, was also a native of the "Wooden Nutmeg State", and came of one of the old New England families. The father died in 1881 and the mother five years later in Norfolk, Connecticut. For forty years Mr. Bassett lived in the state of his birth, and was educated in the public schools, Williston seminary, the seminary of East Hampton, Massachusetts, and one year in Yale. In Norfolk he was engaged for several years in the mercantile business and silk manufacturing, being at the time and is yet secretary and treasurer of the Aetna Silk Company. In 1891 he came to Washington and established the Snohomish National Bank, Snohomish, and the Adams County Bank, which in 1901 was converted into a national bank at Ritzville, of which he is president. He also at this time organized the First National Bank of Waterville, of which he was cashier some months. He is now president of the First National Bank of Ritzville, the Odessa State Bank, the Bank of Lind, the Presser State Bank and the Farmers' Bank at Hatton, Washington. He is treasurer of the Sprague Mercantile Company, Sprague, Washington; president of the Ritzville Library and Improvement Association; and president of the Chamber of Commerce. After leaving school in 1879 Mr. Bassett was for eighteen months employed in the banking house of Cowles & Eldridge, in Norfolk, and in 1881 he went to Minnesota, where he studied law with C.M. Start, now a member of the Minnesota supreme court. He was never admitted to practice, however, but went from Minnesota to Kansas, where he remained two months and returned to the state of his birth. Here he became secretary of the Norfolk Shear Company, and on January 1, 1883, he engaged in the general merchandise business with the firm of Clark & Bassett, in which he was extremely prosperous. In 1890 he sold his interest in business to his partner, and spent the following year in organizing banks at Hartington and Ogalala, Nebraska, and at Dunlap, Iowa. John D. Bassett has no brothers, but has one sister, Rebecca B., wife of Dr. Plumb-Brown, Springfield, Massachusetts. On September 30, 1896, John D. Bassett was married to Alice W. Case, a native of Barkhamstead, Connecticut. Her father was also born in that state. This union has been blessed with three children, Joseph E., Mary D., and Emma S. In fraternity circles Mr. Bassett is affiliated with the Western Star Lodge, No. 37, Norfolk, Connecticut, A.F. and A.M., and both he and his wife are members of the Eastern Star. They are also prominent spirits in the local Congregational church, of which our subject is a deacon. Mr. John D. Bassett has been unusually prominent and active in political circles, both in his native state and the state of his adoption. He represented his district in the Connecticut State legislature in 1886-1887, and was active in all educational measures and clerk of the temperance committee. He was superintendent of schools and town treasurer for several years; and was registrar of voters for ten years. He has been a Republican all his life, and in addition to the above offices was chairman of the Republican central committee from the eighteenth senatorial district of his native state. The Seattle Republican June 5, 1908 J.D. Bassett who made such a splendid record in Olympia as a legislator in the ninth and tenth legislatures, has announced that he will seek the Republican nomination for joint senator from the eleventh senatorial district. Mr. Bassett is a resident of Ritzville, the county seat of Adams county, and has already received the endorsement of his county for the nomination. The Seattle Republican desires to say to the voters of the eleventh senatorial district that they could not find a better man for the position in the entire district than he, and from a result standpoint not one half so good, as he has had the legislative experience and acquaintanceship among the legislators. No man at Olympia among the legislators stood higher in the estimation of the other legislators and the observing public than J.D. He was 52 years of age and had been a resident of Lewis county most of the time since 1889, coming here with his parents from Canada. His youth and earlier years were spent in Chehalis where he was well known. For several years he made his home in Aberdeen. Four years ago he returned to Chehalis and had conducted a barber shop in this city until his business was destroyed by fire in the Moore block a few weeks ago. His aged mother, Mrs. J.C. Bassett and a brother, Charles Bassett live in Tacoma; a sister, Mrs. Mortimer Dunning at Silverton, Ore., another brother, Wm. Bassett, is a well known Centralia business man. Wykoff, a farmer living a short distance west of the city, died Sunday after a three weeks' illness. She was badly burned on the arms some time ago and the injury, along with affection of the brain, is said to have caused her death. Mrs. Wykoff was born on a farm a short distance north of Washington on March 10, 1840, and was seventy one years old. She was the daughter of Mr. & Mrs. Elias Robinson. Fifty one years ago last Christmas she was married to James W. Wykoff and six children were born. Only one chil still lives. That is a son, Elijah Wykoff, of Jefferson, Oklahoma. Besides her husband she leaves one brother, William Robinson of Garden City, Kansas, one half-brother, Richard Robinson, and two half-sisters, Mrs. George Brown and Mrs. Samuel Smith. The funeral will be held at the residence Tuesday afternoon at 2 o'clock, and burial will be made at Oak Grove Cemetery. The Rev. Hayden H. Allen will officiate at the funeral. Mrs. Mary A. Wykoff, seventy one years old, and the wife of James W. Wykoff, an influential and prominent farmer of Washington township, died at her home northwest of Washington at 11 o'clock Sunday night. The health of Mrs. Wykoff has been failing for sometime, but about three weeks ago she was severely burned about the arms in an accident and these injuries hastened her death. The maiden of of Mrs. Wykoff was Robinson. She was born in Daviess county and had lived in the county all her life. Six children were born to the marriage of Mr. and Mrs. Wykoff, which took place December 25, 1858. One of these, Elijah Wykoff of Oklahoma, is living. Mrs. Wykoff was a member of the Cumberland Presbyterian church. The funeral services will be held from the family home Tuesday afternoon at 2 o'clock, with the Rev. H.H. One winter day they took a team and buggy and went to visit Bill. A big spring at the lower end of the Papesh Place had laid down a sheet of ice across the road. One of the horses slipped and fell, causing the wagon to lurch, throwing Mrs. Bassett on her head on the frozen ground. They righted things, and Mrs. Bassett appeared OK. They continued on to Bassett Creek. Betty prepared tea for them, and Mrs. Bassett proceeded to put spoonful after spoonful of sugar in her tea. That was the first indication that her head had been injured, but from that time on she was never in good mental health. When Hattie married Harry Bray, she moved to the deer Lodge area and took her mother with her. Mrs. Bassett died not long after the move at Warm Springs. Fred worked at the Goffner Sawmill, above the Taylor Place in Mol Heron Creek, and became acquainted with Cinnabar Basin. He moved to the Basin around 1895, and settled where Al and Judy Jensen now live (on the Sargent Ranch). On Nov. 26, 1897, he married Leah Smith, whose family lived on the place which was later proved up on by the Hesit family. (He was 34 and she was 21.) Their first daughter, Florence, was born Sept. 22, 1898. So for around ten years, the two Bassett families lived on opposite sides of the Yellowstone River. To visit each other or to trade work, they had to cross the river at a ford just above the present Corwin Bridge. Florence can even remember them hauling a threshing machine across the ford. She also recalls one time when her family went to visit Bill and Betty. They took a team and buggy. One of the horses was a mare which had a foal, which they allowed to tag along, as they were to be gone overnight. The river was high, and when the team plunged into the water at the ford, the colt swam ahead of the team and became lodged between the horses, under the tongue. Fred had to crawl out onto the tongue to push the colt forward and around in front of the team to prevent it from drowning. Bill and Betty ranched on Bassett Creek for a number of years. Their children were Harvey (Ethel Rigler's father), Lester, Shelby, Nellie (who died when she was 8-12 years old, and is buried in the Gardiner Cemetery), Nora (who married Bill Jones), and Wildie (born about 1905). At a time when buffalo were near extinction, buffalo were a problem on this ranch, especially in the spring. On any given day, a person could round a corner of the barn while doing chores, and run into a cantankerous old bull. The bulls were known to breed their cows, and they had some hybrid calves. So they tried to run the animals off, with varying success. In 1908, Bill sold the Bassett Creek place to the group which built the Corwin Springs Hotel and Plunge in 1909. The existing Corwin Bridge was built at that time. Subsequently, Betty operated a boarding house on Main Street in Livingston, and Bill set up a blacksmith shop in Fishtail. John Stout Bassett came to Kentucky as a boy and later moved to Bassett's Ridge in Bracken County, Kentucky, where he was sheriff for 28 years. His parents were Amos and Susan Stout Bassett who were with General Symmes' party that came down the Ohio River to found Cincinnati. The Bassetts stopped at Limestone, now Maysville, and lived in Mason and Bracken Counties, KY. John served for 28 years as sheriff of Bracken County. In 1841 he and his family moved to Hopkins County where he bought a farm near Anton. On 24 Mar 1811 John Bassett married Jane Rogerson, daughter of William Rogerson, and they had eight children. They were Elijah, Amos, James, William P., Elizabeth, Susan, Emily and Jane Rogerson Bassett. Elijah is discussed in another article. William P. never married; Elizabeth married John Margness Pearl, Jr.; Susan married Lonny Niblick and Emily married William H. Hewlett. All four of these children died as young adults and are buried in the Bassett cemetery near Anton. Amos Bassett was born 15 Sep 1815 and married Lucy Waller Nesbit on 20 Sept. 1842. He had farms near Madisonville and members of this family have been prominent in Hopkins County since 1841. The children of Amos and Lucy were Lucien who married Agnes Prithcett, George never married, William "Bud" married Josei Fugate, Mary K. married Dr. Mandley B. Winstead, Elijah married Margaret Elizabeth Bull and then Mrs. Cordie rover, Laura A. died young, Samuel married Mary Jones, Jenny married Yateman Johnson, Fannie Waller married Ed Kirkwood, John married Sally Morgan and Jessie married Alvin D. Sisk. The Amos Bassett family owned a large tract of land in Madisonville called "Bassett Hill". It ran from Price Street east across what is now Highway 41 and contained two family-owned livery stables, a sawmill and a slaughter house. George Bassett had the first contract to pave streets in Madisonville. The residence of Byron Hobgood on Price Street is on the site of the home of his great-grandfather, William "Bud" Bassett. Byron is President and his uncle, Hiram Bassett, is Secretary-Treasurer of the Bassett-Anton Community Cemetery Association. James Bassett was the first of the family to come to West Kentucky. Soon after receiving his certificate to practice medicine in 1840, he rode westward to seek a location. He settled in Providence, then in Hopkins County. He married Frances America S. Given, daughter of Eleazer and Mary Eveline Savage Sittler Given. They had no children. Jane Rogerson Bassett was born 23 May 1828 and married Joe Smith Thomas on 7 Feb 1848. In compliance with that request I wrote him a lengthy letter giving him a brief history of my family from the time I came to this country but I regret that I have not rec'd any from him since. A young man from our Country (Mr. Ashby) informed me that he fell in company with your mother last Spring am brought me a very satisfactory account of your family. I wrote to her shortly after he returned but have not rec'd an answer from her since. I regret exceedingly that it was not convenient for you to visit us before returning to Missouri but would request that you correspond with me and my family by letter and visit us early as practicable. Walton-Raji Known to be a strict disciplinarian and a devout family man, Louis Mitchell Bass was born a slave in Giles County, Tennessee. He was the son of Irving and Nancy, who were both slaves of Major John Bass of Elkton. Upon the death of Major Bass in 1860, some of the Bass estate was divided, and as debts were paid and gifts were made from the estate, the lives of the enslaved people were dramatically affected by this settlement. One of those affected was Mitchell. He was sent as a "gift" to one of the daughters of Major Bass, and sent to live in south west Arkansas, near the town of Horatio. Not much was known about his life while enslaved in Arkansas forever separated from his family. It has been said that he was often working with sheep and wool, and spinning yarn. Louis Mitchell would remain in Arkansas, for most of his life, although he would often receive news and treasure news about the family that remained in Tennessee. He would later keep in touch with one of the few remaining brothers who eventually left Tennessee and moved to Kansas. Two older brothers were in Texas, but Mitchell never saw them again. Mitchell would marry twice in his lifetime, first to Susan Houston, and after she died he then married her sister Georgia Ann Houston. He would raise a very large family in Horatio, Arkansas, even renting land to families nearby. Agriculture was how he made a living, and the family would remain in the same Arkansas community until the 1940s. In the late 1800s Mitchell Bass obtained some of his land as a homesteader. One of his sons, Irving also later acquired land and the family prospered for many years off of the combined parcels of acquired land. It is not known how Louis Mitchell Bass found his freedom, but in honor of the Emancipation Proclamation, and his freedom, I honor this ancestor! Bassett Waterford Man?s Promotion Important Position In Canada Many friends in Waterford will be interested to learn of the promotion of Mr. Thos. W. Bassett, who has been appointed Assistant General Manager of the Dominion Glass Company, Wallaceburg, Canada. Mr. Bassett is the fifth son of the late Mr. George W. Bassett, who was partner in the firm of Messrs. Bassett and Meredith, and resided in Catherine Street, Waterford. He was educated at the Bishop Foy School. Two other brothers are also in Canada, and a third, Mr. Benjamin Bassett, is a chemist in Malahide, Col Dublin. His only sister is the wife of Mr. C.S. Agnew, formerly of the Board of Works, Waterford, and now residing in Belfast. ?The Chatham Daily News? says:? Two important changes in the personnel of officials of the Dominion Glass Co. were announced on July 30th by Sir Charles B. Gordon of Montreal, president of the organization. Thomas W. Bassett, who has been manager of the West Wallaceburg plant of the above firm for ten years has been promoted to the position of Assistant General Manager of the entire organization. Edward G. Davies, plant superintendent, is promoted to the position of plant manager. Both appointments are to be effective from September 1, the advice stated. Mr. Bassett, who has been a resident of Wallaceburg for the past ten years, is to return to Montreal, where the head office of the firm is located. He started to work for the Dominion Glass Company 25 years ago, and was stationed at the Delorimier plant of the Diamond Flint Glass Company. The plant was closed in 1914 and for the next two years he was located at the Point St. Charles plant and the head office of the firm. In 1916 Mr. Bassett enlisted in the 7th Canadian Siege Battery, Canadian Heavy Artillery, and served overseas for almost 3 years before returning to Canada for demobilization in 1919. Returning to the firm, Mr. Bassett worked in the Dovercourt plant in Toronto for a year. In 1930 the Delorimier plant was re-opened for business and for the next five years Mr. Bassett held the position of plant manager. In 1925 Mr. Bassett was transferred to Wallaceburg as manager of the large plant in the West end of the town. During the period of his stay in Wallaceburg Mr. Bassett made hundreds of friends, not only among the officials and employees of the firm, but also among the business and professional men of the town, who regret his impending departure, but congratulate him upon his well-earned promotion. Mr. Bassett has been an invaluable member of the Baldoon Golf and Country Club. He was also a member of the Business Men?s Club and also of the Chamber of Commerce. His successor, Edawrd G. Davies, entered the service of the company in 1922, and came to Wallaceburg in 1925 with Mr. Bassett, and in the year 1929 he was appointed superintendent of the entire plant. In addition to his work at the plant, Mr. Davies had taken much interest in the town, as a whole, and served for one years as member of the town council. He is a past president of the Kinsman Club, of which he is a very active member, and this years he holds the position of chairman of the Sunshine Committee, which administer the special fund made up each year by the Blub, through the medium of various activities, for the benefit of needy children of the town. She then married Jerry Gronoski on May 28, 1988, at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Evansdale. She was an instructor at Young's Beauty School. After she earned LPN, she practiced nursing for many years in La Porte City, Reinbeck, and eventually Country View. After she retired from nursing, she drove school bus for Waterloo Schools. She was a member of Grace Evangelical Lutheran Church, Waterloo, and was active in Bible Study and the pastoral search committee. She enjoyed crossword puzzles, crocheting, computer games, shopping. She also loved animals and had many beloved pets over the years. November 3, 2023 Larry Lee Bass, 76, of New Hartford, died Friday, November 3, 2023 at Waverly Health Center. Larry was born in Waterloo on September 23, 1947, the son of Walter "Bud" and Lucille (Bacon) Bass. He was a proud graduate from New Hartford High School, class of 1965. Larry married his high school sweetheart, Sandra Sells, in Cedar Falls on July 2, 1966. He enlisted in the United States Army during the Vietnam War, serving as a Military Police Officer from 1969-1970. Following his service, Larry joined his wife back in New Hartford and started farming. He was owner and operator of Monkey Mountain Dairy and Bass Oil Company. Larry became a Police Officer and eventually worked as a Reserve Deputy for the Butler County Sheriff's Office. However, he couldn't get away from his love of farming and continued working various jobs assisting the farming community around New Hartford. In 2011, Larry officially retired as Jail Administrator for Butler County after 30 years of service to the county. Larry loved playing cards, playing pool, riding horses, talking to others, and helping those in need. He also wasn't afraid to strip down to his underwear if it meant allowing him to be more comfortable. If you were close to Larry and his family, chances are you have seen Larry in his skivvies. But that was Larry; always the life of the party and comfortable with who he was. He will be remembered for his love of life, his generosity, and the love he had for his family. He is survived by his wife, Sandy Bass; children, Lara (Kevin) Kyhl, Leah (Wade) Harriman, Leasha (Josh) Henriksen, and Lane (Casie) Bass; 11 grandchildren, Kiley, Colin, and Corbin Kyhl, Cade and Carson Harriman, Charleigh, Owen, and Landree Henriksen, and Bryce, Brooklyn, and Briley Bass; and sisters-in-law, Barb Sells and Diane Bass. He was a blacksmith and a carriage trimmer by trade and worked for a number of years at Hermon and later in this city. He removed to a farm near Sanfords several years ago. Twenty-four years ago Mr. Bass married Miss Nell Althouse of Gouverneur by whom he is survived. A daughter, Effie, also survives. Two brothers, Joseph of Gouverneur and ?Jack? The body will arrive about themiddle of this week it is expected, and the funeral will be held from the Odd Fellows temple, Clayton, the arrangements to be completed upon the arrival of the body. Mr. Bass is the second man in the contingent to leave Clayton a month ago for Camp Jackson to die of pneumonia, the other being Private Harry Payne whose funeral was held Saturday afternoon at St. Lawrence, N.Y. Mr. Bass was born in the town of Clayotn, N.Y., the second son of Mr. and the late Cyrus A. Bass and had always lived in the same neighborhood where his family now reside. He was a friend to all and his many friends express deep sorrow for his sudden death. Mr. Bass, his father, received a telegram Friday announcing that his son was crticially ill with pneumonia at Camp Jackson and on Saturday the second telegram was received announcing his son?s death. The boy was found to be Nelson Bassett, whose parents live at 64 Lake street, Ogdensburg. Bassett was sent to the school of Rev. Father Baker, Buffalo, N.Y., some time ago, but recently ran away, working his way from Buffalo to Watertown on ?freights.? Bassett?s feet were badly swollen and his hands were frost-bitten. Bassette, 81, of 272 Thompson Blvd., retired superintendent of maintenance and operation of the State Department of Public Works, died at 8:10 this morning in the House of the Good Samaritan following a short illness. The funeral will be Thursday at 11 a.m. at the Cleveland Spink Funeral Home, Inc., Reverend Weston A. Stevens, pastor of All Souls Universalist Unitarian Church, officiating. Burial will be in Brookside Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home Wednesday from 7 to 9 p.m. Memorials may be contributed to Clarkson college. Surviving are his widow, Mrs. Priscilla Lee Bassette; two daughters, Mrs. Joseph S. (Blanche) Lee Pierce, Elmira; Mrs. David S. (Mary) Mannigan, Harrisville. Mr. Bassette was born in Lanark County, Ontario, Canada, September 19, 1892, son of John and Jeanne Craig Bassette. He attended schools in Harrisville, having moved there with his parents at the age of six. He was graduated from Clarkson College of Technology in 1916 with a bachelor of science degree in civil engineering. A registered professional engineer, he was awarded an honorary doctorate in civil engineering by Clarkson June 5, 1960. During his summers at Clarkson, Mr. Bassette worked for the State Department of Transportation and became a full-time employe after graduation. He was an Army captain and battalion commander at Camp Jackson, South Carolina, during World War I. At the end of the war, he resumed his state employment. He married Priscilla M. Lee, then of 211 S. Pleasant St., December 20, 1920, at Emmanuel Congregational Church, Reverend Hezekiah Pyle, pastor, officiating. From 1931 to 1937, he was resident engineer with the State Department of Public Works in Jefferson County and from 1937 to 1958, was superintendent of maintenance for the five-county District 7, which comprised about 18 per cent of the state's land area. In 1958, he was named superintendent of operation and maintenance for the State Department of Transportation, in charge of highways, bridges and waterways. He retired September 19, 1963 at the age of 71. Mr. Bassette was a member of All Souls Universalist-Unitarian Church; Diana Lodge 928, F&AM, Harrisville; Scottish Rite Consistory, Valley of Buffalo in Buffalo; Media Temple, Watertown; past commandery and life member, Watertown American Legion Post 61; member, Palmer Creek Club, and a past president of the Watertown Golf Club. Bass died at 4 Sunday afternoon at his farm home in the town of Watertown on the Dry Hill road, following a long illness, aged 80 years. He suffered a serious stroke about ten years ago, and had been practically blind since that time. Lately he experienced two or three light shocks. His condition had been critical for some time, and the death was not unexpected. he had been unable to do much work since his first shock ten years ago. He was born in the town of Heath, Mass., April 15, 1836, son of the late Joel M. and Jerusha Shippe Bass, both natives of Catamount Hill, Mass. He came to this city in 1859 and spent about five years learning the carpenter trade. In 1862 he bought the farm and farm home on Dry Hill and soon after moved there, where he had since resided. Jan. 31, 1864, he married Miss Hannah A. Simmons, who died in 1878. In 1882 he married Miss Alvira of Gouverneur, St. Lawrence county, until, her marriage. While Mr. Bass worked the farm to some extent, he was more interested in carpentry, and built and helped build many farm homes in this section. he also worked on many of the buildings in this city. He was a member of Redman lodge, F.& A.M. Besides his widow, he leaves one son, Eugene J. Bass, and two grandchildren, Pauline E. and Carl H. Bass, all residing at the farm home; one brother, Edwin Bass, of Adams Centre, and one sisters, Mrs. D. E. Simmons, of Syracuse.
