| 50905 | Western Star and Roma Advertiser, 13 February 1924 Obituary Mr. Robert James Bassett The death of Mr. Robert James Bassett took place at Romavilla on Monday afternoon as a result of wounds and sickness contracted while a member of the A.I.F. in France. He was 43 years of age a native of Roma, being the eldest surviving son of the late Mr. Samuel Symons Bassett and Mrs. Bassett, whose names have been for so long associated with Romavilla. When war broke out the deceased was n New South Wales, and enlisted in Sydney in 1915. He was considerable service on the Western Front, and was badly wounded in the knee and gassed during one of the big engagements in 1917, subsequently being invalided back to Australia. He spent a considerable time in military hospitals in Sydney, but eventually came home to Roma about two year ago, and has been living at Romavilla, practically under medical treatment the whole time. Not withstanding his severe war disabilities he was always cheerful and bright and displayed more than the usual digger?s fortitude in this suffering. It was while getting into the ambulance car preparatory to undergoing an operation that he passed quietly away. The remains moved to the cemetery from St. Paul?s Church of England yesterday forenoon, a number of deceased?s comrades of the A.I.F acting as pallbearers, the last sad rites performed by former A.I.F. | 50906 | Western Star and Roma Advertiser, Toowoomba, Queensland, Australia Friday, 25 Sep 1947 Obituary Mr. Francis Rendell Bassett The news of the death of Mr. Francis (Frank) Bassett, which occurred at his residence, Norther Road, Roma late on Tuesday afternoon, came as a shock to his relatives and friends. He was 63 years of age, third son of the late Mr. and Mrs. S.S. Bassett, who established the widely known Roma Villa Vineyards. He was born at Roma, and after leaving school spent most of his life superintending the vineyard and cultivation. He was an enthusiastic gardener and fisherman and a keen follower of other sporting activities. He was married, his wife having predeceased him, and is survived by five daughters, Mrs. Best (Victorin), Mrs. Lambert (St. George), Mrs. Ron Pryor (Roma), Mrs. Goodwin (Sydney) and Mrs. Martin (Tweed Heads), also four brothers, Messrs, W.A., S.S., Lionel and Ken, and two sisters, Mrs. Carlisle and Mrs. Ponting. Born Aug. 20, 1933, he was a lifelong resident of Westport, where he met and married Joan Vornkahl June 18, 1955. Mr. Bassett served in the U.S. Army and Army Reserve from 1956 to 1962, serving in France during active duty. He was a professional in human resources for several companies, retiring from Foxboro Corporation in 1991. He was a former member and past president of the Kiwanis Club of Westport. He was involved with his children in the Greater Bridgeport Junior Hockey Association and befriended many children and parents there. Mr. Bassett was also a traffic agent for the Westport Police Department. He was devoted to a family that included his two sons, Randy and his wife Tara and their children, Cameron and Brendan of Littleton, Mass., and Russell and his fiance Laura, and his son Christian of Westport. Friends may attend a memorial service Saturday, Nov. 8 at 10 a.m. in Green's Farms Congregational Church, 71 Hillandale Road, Westport. Previously of South Norwalk and Wilton, he attended Wilton Center School, Westport Junior High, and Staples High School. He served in the Army during World War II and worked as a machine operator for 45 years at Gilbert & Bennett, until his retirement in 1987. He was a member of the New Fairfield Congregational Church where he was a Deacon Emeritus, and was a member of the American Legion Post No. 60. He is survived by his brothers, Orin E. Bass and his wife, Katherine of Danbury, Charles E. Bass of Southington, Kenneth J. Bass and his wife, Dorothy of Danbury; sister, Bessie M. Morabito and her husband, Peter of Danbury; as well as several nieces and nephews. In addition to his wife and parents, he was predeceased by his son, Russell C. Bass, Jr.; and brothers, George, Clifford, Mervin and Edward Bass. The funeral will be held at the New Fairfield Congregational Church, New Fairfield, Thursday at 11 a.m.. She was a member of the former St. Denis Catholic Church, where she played the organ for 27 years; she was also a member of the Canasta Club and Progressive Homemakers Extension Club. She enjoyed travelling and her grandchildren. She married George J. Bass on August 29, 1950 in Greensburg, he preceded her in death on May 1, 2003. She is survived by daughters, Norma J. Edna was a loving and devoted mother, grandmother, and great grandmother and will be dearly missed. She was preceded in death by her husband, Gerald Bass; parents, James and Martha Shoemaker; and sister, Beatrice Beal. He served until April 23, 1958 when he was honorably discharged to go home and work on the family farm. Ray and Waltraud (Karl) meet while he was in service in Europe. They were united in marriage on October 8, 1959 in the First Baptist Church here in Greenville. Ray continued farming his entire life. He loved spending time with his children and grandchildren. A few of Ray?s loves besides family was playing the violin, coon hunting and raising ponies in his younger years. | 50944 | When a young man, Bennett Ebenezer Bassett attended a select school in Farmer Village taught by P.C. Headley, on the corner of Seneca Street and West Avenue. Here he met Matilda Wheeler, also a pupil. Later he taught school at Covert, New York, and she was one of his pupils there, and he boarded at her home. Their acquaintance ripened into love and they were married. The Bassetts and Wheelers both migrated to Seneca County about the same time. The year 1850 saw the breaking up of the farm home of Lemuel and Julia Bassett, and the beginning for themselves of the sons Bennett and Jared. The time came when the two brothers must decide on their farms. The roadway divided their father's farm into nearly equal parts; the upper tract was the better land, but there was no good house on it. Which one was to have the upper farm and which the lower? They settled the matter by "drawing cuts", and the lower farm fell to Bennett. Jared bought only 70 acres on the start, paying $50 per acre. Bennett's farm contained 101 acres, 3 roods and 23 rods of land, and a stipulation in his deed contained these words: "The said party of the second part is to have the privilege of conducting the water from the spring on lot No. 40 in the same manner as now conducted by the party of the first part". This clause referred to a system of running water then in use by which water ran in the kitchen of the old house by means of a lead pipe leading from a spring on the south side of the upper farm near the Severn woods. Bennett continued to use the water for several years, when it was abandoned. A few years after purchasing the farm, he sold to Hamilton Mundy a strip of woodland on the eastern side containing about fourteen and one-half acres. Jared Beardsley Bassett (brother of Bennett Bassett) was married to Mary Wheeler whose father was Nathan Beech Wheeler. Bennett Basset (brother of Jared Beardsley Bassett) was married to Matilda Wheeler whose father was Lyman Wheeler. He participated in the Cherokee Indian war and after it was over he went back to his old home and married Miss Christian Cameron. He came back to Sumter County, and later moved to Irwin County. He was sheriff of Irwin County for eight years. A few years prior to the Civil War he moved to Clinch County and settled three miles south of Moerville. In 1868 he was elected sheriff to Clinch County, an office which he held three years. Pioneer Familes of the Kissimmee River Valley By Kyle S. Van Landingham, 1976 Bass Family The founder of the Bass family in the Kissimmee River Valley was Joseph Everett Bass. He was born Feb. 11, 1811, in Sampson County, North Carolina, a son of Everett Bass. J.E. Bass moved to Georgia in 1829, settling in Sumter County. He returnerd to North Carolina during the late 1830?s where he married Christine Cameron. They then moved back to Georgia and had six children. Mrs. Bass died during the Civil War, and J.E. married Amanda (Johnson) Spikes. Four children were born to this marriage. Mr. Bass moved in 1848 to Irwin County and in 1859 to Clinch County. In 1872 he moved to Orlando, Florida, and served as Deputy Sheriff of Orange County for four years. About 1880 he moved to Tampa, Fla. where he died Aug. 25, 1897. Among J.E. Bass?s sons by his first marriage were Archibald C. Bass and Thomas A. Bass. Thomas served as first Sheriff of Osceola County when it was created in 1887. Archibald C. Bass, son of J.E. and Christine (Cameron) Bass, was born July 6, 1843. He married Ann Victoria Brack, daughter of John Brack, on Aug. 19, 1865. She was born Nov. 5, 1849. Archibald and Ann Victoria (Brack) Bass had the following children: 1. Augustine ?Gussie? L. Bass, born Sept. 16, 1866; married Minnie Johns, Jan. 25 1892 2. Rosa Bell Bass, born Oct. 15. 1868; married Mose Tindall. 3. Quinn J. Bass, born Sept. 29, 1870; died July 9, 1952; married Callie Ham. 4. Oliver Rudolph Bass, born May 5, 1872; died 1950; married Rebecca Nettles, June 10, 1894. 5. Oscar J. Bass, born Oct. 27, 1875; died May 21, 1900. 6. Lee L. Bass, born Dec. 28, 1878; married Lena McClelland. 7. Alice Bass, b orn Dec. 24, 1885; married Julian Montesdeoca. 8. Grant Bass, born Oct. 20, 1887; married Leatie Baisden. 9. Nat P. Bass moved to South Florida with his father in 1872 and soon moved to the Whittier settlement in Brevard, now Osceola County. There he was engaged in the cattle business and operated a general store. He died Feb. 21, 1909. Ann Victoria (Brack) Bass died Jan. 14, 1941. Both are buried in the Kennansville Cemetery. J.E. came to Georgia in 1829 and located in Sumter County. He was there when the indian War came on in South Georgia in 1836. After taking part in it he went back to his old home county in North Carolina where he married Miss Christine Cameron, born there in 1817. He then returned with his bride to Sumter County. To them were born six children: 1.David A. Bass b.c1840, never m. Missing MIA at Boonesboro, Md. 2. Archibald Cameron Bass b. c1843, m. Victoria Brack, d/o John (Vol I 3. Joseph E. After the death of his first wife during the civil war, Mr. Bass was married in Clinch county in 1867 to Mrs. Amanda Spikes, widow of Isaac Spikes (a Confederate casualty) and a daughter of John J. Johnson of Homerville. She was born in Jefferson County, Fla., in 1840. Four daughters were born by her, viz: 7. Lucinda Bass b. c1868, m. Charles Taylor in Fla. 8. Amanda Bass b. c1870, m. Unknown Davis in Fla. 9. Missouri Bass b. 1872, m. (unknown) in Fla. 10. Ellen Bass b. c1875, m. Unknown Prescott in Fla. Mr. Bass lived on the east half of lot 368, 28th district of Sumter County, during his residence there. He sold this property to Martin G. Brady, July 24, 1848 (deed book "H", page 336, Sumter County), and moved that fall to Irwin County. He served as Sheriff of Irwin County, 1850-1852, and was Justice of Peace in 901st district (now Worth County), 1852-53. In 1859, he moved from Worth to Clinch county and bought a lot of land about three miles southwest of Homerville and made his home there. He was elected Sheriff of Clinch County in the 1868 election on the Democratic ticket and served three years, 1868-71. He then served as deputy under his successor, Sheriff James M. Nelms, for one year. in 1872 he moved to Orlando, Fla., where he served as deputy sheriff four years. About 1880, he moved to Tampa, Fla., where he lived until his death, August 25, 1897. The second wife was baptized into the Homerville Baptist Church, Oct 3, 1868, and was dimissed by letter, August 13, 1871. Mr. Bass was a member of the Masonic order, affiliating with Cassia Lodge, No. 224, at Homerville, in 1864. He was demitted Sept. 10, 1872, when he moved to Florida. In 1868 he was elected sheriff of Clinch County, an office which he held three years. After his term of office expired, Mr. Bass served as a deputy under his successor, James. M. Nelms, until 1872, when he removed to Orlando, Fla. Here he served as deputy sheriff four years, afterwards moving to Tampa, Fla., where he died August 25th, 1897, aged 86 years.
