Bassett, 81, of Alexandria, passed away on Monday, November 27, 2023, at Ascension St. Vincent Anderson Hospital, surrounded by his loving family after a brief illness. Born on February 1, 1942, in Anderson, IN, Jerry was the beloved son of Roscoe L. and Mildred (McCarty) Bassett. A proud graduate of Alexandria High School, Class of 1960, he embarked on a journey of love and commitment when he married Georgia (Harris) Bassett on September 8, 1961. Jerry dedicated many years of hard work to General Motors, Anderson, and retired in June of 1996. He was an active member of the First Baptist Church of Alexandria, where his faith played a significant role in his life. He was a supporter of Purdue Basketball. Described as an all-round good person, Jerry was known for his willingness to help others. His family brought him immense joy, and as a devoted husband, father, and grandfather, spending time with them, especially his grandchildren, held a special place in his heart. Left to carry on his legacy of love are his wife of 62 years, Georgia, and his sons, Greg (Christina) Bassett, Chris (Alexis) Bassett, and Tim (Rebecca) Bassett. Jerry is also survived by 11 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Larry Bassett. A service to remember Jerry will be held on Friday, December 1, 2023, at 1:00 p.m. in the First Baptist Church of Alexandria, located at 2107 S Park Ave., Alexandria, with Rev. Michael Deutsch officiating. Interment will follow in Park View Cemetery. Family and friends are invited to pay their respects during the visitation on Friday, December 1, 2023, from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at the church. Alice worked for a law firm for three years and then attended Nebraska Wesleyan University. She was married to L. Clark Bassett of Unadilla, Neb., on October 25, 1930. The Bassetts lived in Omaha, Neb., and Englewood, Colo., and in 1970, settled in Oak Harbor. Mrs. Bassett was a member of First United Methodist Church of Oak Harbor, a 55-year member of the Order of East Star, Daughters of the American Revolution and Daughters of 1812. Mrs. Bassett is survived by two daughters and their spouses; Phyllis and Gerald Dennis of Garden Grove, Calif., and Marcia N. and Lawrence Keen of Oak Habor. She is survived by nine grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren and five great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband Clark, one son, A.L. Mr. Bass died Oct. 1 at his residence. Born Nov. 24, 1943, he was a son of Aljack Bass and Idumea Walker. He was married to Lindla Ann West on July 19, 1963 in Cairo and Helen Janie Henderson on March 19, 1982, in Thomasville both of whom survive. He was a farmer and worked at the Shell Gas Station. He served in the U.S. Coast Guard from 1962 to 1963 and a member of Hasan Shrine Temple, Albany, GA. Survivors include daughters, Lindla Kay Bass of Mayo, FL, Tammie Percilla Hutchison and David of Lancaster, Ohio, Ann Bass (Stewart Mitchell) of Pettibone, ND; son, Billy Wade Bass and Catherine of Thomasville; granddaughter, Andresha Simione? | 50959 | While still a boy, along with his farm work, he took trips, as far as New York State, with a pack, selling silk from farm to farm. When 21, having decided to follow merchandising instead of farming, he came to New York, opening an office at 173 Broadway. This was the same building in which later he was a successful wholesale jewelry merchant for many years before he retired in 1897. In 1862 he moved from Ballston to Brooklyn, New York. In 1870 he moved to Watertown, New York, which he made headquarters in his trade with country stores in surrounding counties. In 1884 he returned to Brooklyn, continuing from his New York office his merchandising in Northern New York. In 1906 he removed to Buffalo where he died. Springfield Republican, Massachusetts, 1 May 1919 Former Ashfield Man Dies Charles R. Bassett, 83, died in Buffalo, N.Y., Easter Sunday. He was born in Ashfield, the son of Francis Bassett and Mehitabel (Ford) Bassett of that town. He is survived by two sisters, Mrs. Levi Ford of Greenfield and Mrs. Rosa S. Ranney of Ashfield. He also leaves his widow and four children, a son , George B. Bassett and two daughters, Mrs. Charles M. Harrington and Mrs. Alfred H. Martin, all of Buffalo, and a son, Edward M. December 3, 2019 Curtis George Austin was born December 3, 1930 in Sayre, Oklahoma to Mary Pearly Faye (Stephens) and Curtis Clyde Austin. He passed away December 3, 2019 at Sayre, Oklahoma at the age of 89 years. Curtis grew up in the Erick community where he attended school at Sayre until the age of 14 and finished in Erick. At the age of 17 he was married to Norma Jean (Bassett) Austin on August 21, 1948 in Wheeler, Texas. After their marriage they made their home in Erick, Oklahoma where they remained and raised their family. Curtis worked at the United Carbon Plant in Shamrock, Texas for 11 years and also worked in his shop. Throughout his life he built many buildings and structures for local farmers and ranchers as well as the community and industries including the cotton gin. Curtis was active as a volunteer firefighter and served as the chief of the Erick Fire Department for one year. He attended the Erick Church of Christ and served many years as an elder. Curtis and Norma Jean spent many summers in Gunnison, Colorado in a fifth wheel and eventually purchased a vacation home where they enjoyed 4-wheeling and fishing. He also enjoyed gardening, metal art, working and attending church. He is preceded in death by his parents, step-mother, Edith Austin, brother, Dale Austin and an infant great great grandson, Berit McAbee. He is survived by his wife of 71 years, Norma Jean, of the home; 4 children, Curtis L. Austin and wife, Joyce, Erick, OK, Dennis Austin and wife, Camilla, Elk City, OK, Rusty D. Austin and wife, Jana, Erick, OK and Melodie Lynn Smith and husband, Rod, Erick, OK, 12 grandchildren, numerous great as well as great great grandchildren, 1 sister, Sherry Lujan and husband, Louie, Roy, NM, sister-in-law, Billie Austin, Baker City, OR and a host of other relatives and friends. She was a nurse for many years for Putnam County Hospital until her retirement,and was a dedicated mother and grandmother. She is survived by her son Donald A. Bassett and his wife Robin of Cloverdale. Grandchildren Devin Bassett, and Danielle Hubbard. Also, one great-grandchild Annabelle Bassett. May 1, 2012 (Kansas City) Florence Marie Bassett Daniel was born August 5, 1950 in Garden City, Kansas to Richard Loren and Betty Francis Hubbard Bassett. She was the second of four children. Her siblings were Richard, Barbara, and Robert Bassett. Florence grew up on a farm outside of Hamilton, Mo, and graduated from J.C. Penny High School, near the J.C. Penny farm in 1968. She attended Trenton Jr. College School of Nursing and received her LPM degree. The college had classes that met in a local radio station building. Florence chose the LPN instead of the RN because at the time the LPN's worked more with the patients while RN's were more dispensers of the meds. Florence began her career as a nurse in 1973 and worked for a year at Trenton Memorial Hospital. She then began working at NKC hospital where she stayed the rest of her working career. On Jul 14, 1973 Florence was united in marriage to Steve Daniel whom she had met at the Dairy Queen in Trenton. To the union was born one child, Serena Lee. Through a visit by Pastor Olen and Ed Collier in 1973 Florence was saved and shortly after began to attend Avondale Baptist Church. She was baptized one year later on her first wedding anniversary, July 14, 1974. She and Steve then joined the church and began to serve the Lord there. Florence truly had a heart for the Avondale Baptist Church AWANA program. She was committed to this important ministry with children. He was born November 26, 1944 and was the younger of two children born in Trenton, MO, to Howard Orville and Hazel Dean (Craig) Daniel of Spickard, MO. Steven worked on the dairy farm with his dad after graduation (1962) from Spickard High School, 2 years of Trenton Jr. College in 1963 to 1964, 3 years at N.E. Jr. College from 1964 to 1967. Then he enlisted, in Kirksville, MO, on July 1, 1968 into the United Stated Air Force, serving 4 years during the Vietnam War. While in the service he served in Wichita Kansas and Frankfurt Germany, receiving a ribbon for Small Arms Expert Marksmanship... Steven O. Daniel passed away July 20, 2017. While in the service, he served as an Inventory Management Specialist and was Honorable discharged on May 23, 1972. Then finishing one more year of college to get the Agricultural Business bachelor?s degree. On July 14, 1973, Steven was united to Florence Marie Bassett, whom he had met at the Dairy Queen in Trenton, MO. They were married for 38 years before the Lord took her home in 2012. He joined Avondale Baptist and served as a Deacon for many years. Steve worked many, many jobs in his career, holding the longest for 10 years at Emery Worldwide as a delivery driver in Kansas City, MO from 1982 to 1991. He retired in 2009 and still continued to work at odd jobs to stay busy. After a short battle with his health, he went home to be with Florence (Mema) at the age of 72. Steven was preceded in death by his wife of 38 years, in 2012, and his father and mother. He is survived by a daughter, Serena (Randy) Hager, of Itasca, Ill; a brother, Craig (Gloria) Daniels, of Kansas City, MO; 2 grandsons, Jimmy Skelton of Kansas City, MO and Jordon Skelton of Itasca, Ill; and two great grandchildren, Ellianna and Hunter Skelton. | Daniel, Steven O. Mr. Bassett is a former resident of Monticello having operated a tire store in the corner of the Old Commercial block before it was remodeled. Bassett, 64, of South Wabash street, died of a heart attack at 11 p.m. Sunday in Tower, Minn., where he was spending his vacation. A native of Illinois, he was the former owner of Bassett?s service station in Delphi and before that had operated a service station in Monticello. He was a veteran of World War I, a member of the Presbyterian church,, Delphi I.O.O.F, American Legion, and the 40 and 8. Surviving are the wife, Maureen, whom he married in 1918; and a brother, Frank, of Hazelhurst, Wisc. The body is being returned to the Elkenberry funeral home. Rites are pending. Funeral services were held at the Baptist church Tuesday at 10 o?clock, conducted by Rev. W.R. Johnson. The body was then taken to Richwoods cemetery west of Carrollton for interment. Mr. Edson was twice married, his first wife being Mary Smith of Missouri, and to them were born four children, three of whom are living, Edward of Jersey County, Mrs. John Regeilen of Springfield and Wesley of this city. After the death of his wife many years ago, he was married to Elizabeth Bassett and seven children were born to them, four of whom are living, Walter, Lee and Ada of Oklahoma and Charles of Eldred. Bass New Era Alden "Al" Bass, age 73, of New Era, passed away peacefully Friday, January 3, 2014 after a ten year battle with cancer and Parkinson's. He was born September 26, 1940 to Donald and Ardele Bass in Belle Plain, Iowa. He married Barbara Thomsen on August 26, 1962. Al was a graduate of the University of Nebraska and a retiree from Ford Motor Company after a thirty year career. He was a member of Montague United Methodist Church and enjoyed singing in the choir there. He was an avid NASCAR fan and one of his favorite toys was a 1940 Chevy Street Rod. However, his greatest joy was spending time with his grandchildren. Al was preceded in death by his parents. He is survived by his wife of fifty-one years, Barbara; his children, Craig (Paula) Bass of Chicago, Illinois, Randal (Tracy) Bass of Whitehall; grandchildren, Miles and Charlotte Bass of Chicago and Gabriel and Owen Bass of Whitehall; his brother, Harlan (Viki) Bass of Washington, Utah and his nephew, Michael (Keylee) Bass and their daughter, Kamryn of Sandy, Utah. | 50971 | White Pine Funeral Services Cleta Robinson Bassett March 4, 1932 ? May 24, 2024 Cleta Robinson Bassett passed away on May 24, 2024 at her son?s home in Wellsville, Utah. She was born on March 4, 1932 to Alta J. and L. Ray Robinson at her maternal grandparent?s home in Logan, Utah. At a tender young age, she met Norman Bassett while in high school. They were married in the Logan LDS Temple on December 1, 1948. After having two children, Norman was called to serve in the Western Canadian Mission for two years. Upon returning they had three more children. While residing in Logan, Cleta worked as a medical assistant. Later, the Bassett?s moved to North Ogden. During this time, Cleta received her high school diploma. She continued to work in the medical field, but later became a tax examiner for the IRS where she made many friends. Following in her father?s footsteps, Cleta loved Genealogy research. She was called to extract German records and records from the Ellis Island immigrants. She also compiled an amazing book of family histories. Later in life, she developed and pursued a love for oil painting. Cleta looked forward to the days spent at her talented art teacher?s home, Loretta Gale in Smithfield, Utah. Many of her paintings hang on her family?s walls today. Prior to Norm?s death and in later years, they built a summer home at Bear Lake. During this process and in the winters, their son Zane and his wife Teresa, opened their home to them. Cleta expressed her gratitude often for the kindness and sweet memories of their family and Ward members. Cleta was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints and held many callings. Cleta has resided for the past six years at Legacy Assisted Living in Logan, Utah. The family wishes to extend their thanks to the staff and loved ones she leaves behind. She is survived by her children: Vicky (Brent) Yeates, Blake (Laurie), Zane (Teresa) and Robert (Debra). Two siblings, Lee (Ralph) Cottrell, El Ray (Carol) and a sister-in-law Carol (Gary) Stauffer. | 50972 | White Pine News Weekly Mining Review, Ely, Nevada, Sunday, 5 August 1923 Mrs. Bassett Pioneer Beauty And Good Samaritan Is Dead Mrs. W.R. Bassett, widow of a former sheriff of White Pine county and a woman remembered among old-timers of Nevada as one of the most philanthropic souls that over blest the state by her presence, passed away a few days ago at Salt Lake at the age of 73 years. Mrs. Bassett is first remembered by Ely pioneers as a reside3nt of Pioche, far back in the early ?70s. According their recollection she met and married Mr. Bassett at Candelaria and they returned here, first to Ward and then to Taylor, to reside, locating in Ely in the middle of the ?80s. They remained here until a few years before Mr. Bassett?s death, when they removed to Salt Lake, where he died about five years ago. Since that time Mrs. Bassett lived with her husband?s nephew, Joe Bassett, who gave her the same loving care in her last years as if she had been his mother. Since her husband?s death she gradually lost her sight and according to local belief she must have been totally blind when she died. In her younger days and throughout her life Mrs. Bassett was a noted beauty. She had a stage career of several years in the troupe of John McCullough and her memory of State was marvelous. When she was first known here she had a fortune in diamonds and jewelry equal to that of many of the wives of the millionaires of the country. Yet with her remarkable talents and personal attractiveness she was the most democratic of women and in sickness or need she was one of the most generous persons known in those days of prodigious wealth in mining camps, and everything she had belonged to the lowliest and most needy person she knew. With these heart outpourings went her personal attentions as well. Mr. Bassett came here about 1872, locating first at Robinson, above Lane City, and engaging in the saloon business. From there he went to Ward, where he remained a few years, removing to Candelaria during the boom of the Esmeralda camp. Returning and bringing his handsome bride with him he located first at Ward, then removed to Taylor and later to Cherry Creek. He next came to Ely. In 1888 he sold the Capitol to Dan C. McDonald, who with a partner ran the place for several years. Not long after that Bassett erected a large building on about the site of the present Western Club and opened his second saloon in Ely. The name of the place is forgotten. In the middle of the ?80s Bassett was elected sheriff, succeeding Ross Humphrey. He held the office when the county seat was removed from Hamilton to Ely and was the only sheriff who ever hanged a murdered in the county. He executed Crutchley at Hamilton, as recently related in the White Pine News. At that time there was no jail in Ely and it is now believed here that while the records had been removed or were about to be removed the execution took place there. When the county seat was removed here the court house was the present county hospital, which stood on the site of the present courthouse and, as also told in the News, it was back of that building on its former site that Bassett erected a scaffold and Hank Parish, a Lincoln county murdered who had been tried here on a change of venue, was hanged. Just what period Bassett held the office is not clear, but it appears that he was sheriff four years in all though there was an interim between his terms. In 1894 while incumbent he ran for another term and was defeated by Ben Payne. Bassett was a lifelong republican and Payne a democrat. Bassett bought a ranch adjoining the Lusetti place in Steptoe valley and lived there for some years. It was next to the Huesser ranch and Heussers and he sold to the Federal-Ely people, the buyers hoping to get a corner on the water. Bassett received $20,000 and he made other thousands in mining deals. He was interested with Bert Brown and others in the Ely-Rochelle group near Giroux, which they sold during the boom in about 1908, realizing a considerable fortune for each of the owners. About that time he was stricken with a sort of sleeping sickness, from which he would fall asleep while sitting in a chair but would awaken after a few minutes. From this he never recovered and died four or five years after removing to Salt Lake. Mrs. Bassett had a daughter and son by a former marriage, Mrs. J.B. Simpson, wife of ?Big Sim,? who was a deputy sheriff in Ely during the terms of Bassett as sheriff, and Bert Brown, now a resident of Boise. While living on their Steptoe ranch she adopted a child, who now is Mrs. J.B. Hale Jr. of Salt Lake. Dorothy was the Director of Community of Christ Soup Kitchen, a Sunday school and Bible teacher. She was the treasurer for camp S.K.A.M.P., a camp for special needs children. Dorothy also assisted with the cold night shelters, a band parent chaperone, worked as a substitute teacher. For many years Dorothy was the bookkeeper for Heileg Myers Furniture, and the office manager at Florida Microfilm and Office Supply. Dorothy was preceded in death by her husband Tommy Walther and her parents Lola Mae and Clayton Peters. Survivors include her children: son Dewayne Walther and daughter Renee Walther, Uncle Audrey Ludlam and Aunt Jewel Ludlam, and Cousin Leisa Ludlam. Bass Succumbs To Long Spell of Illness Grandchildren Here During Sickness Long Time Citizen Is Buried With Due Honors Mr. W. A. Bass, pioneer of this section was buried Thursday afternoon at Oakwood Cemetery. Mr. Bass who came to Texas in 1893 settled in Gordonville and engaged in the mercantile business later moving to Whitesboro. Although he settled in Gordonville Mr. Bass has been considered a citizen of Whitesboro for the past 45 years. Mr. Bass came to Whitesboro ?? years ago and engaged in the mercantile business which at that time was the height of any man’s ambition. He belonged to the Masonic Lodge and was cared for as such. Pallbearers were Walter West, Roy MacDaniel, Riley Sloan, J.B. Cravens, Henry Thompson and Wilburn Esppenfield. Mr. Bass has been well known for years in this section as a farmer of well repute. Mr. Bass has made himself a real neighbor and a true friend to any one who needed his aid. He has shown himself to be a true friend in need, at all times, in any way. Funeral services were held in the family home at four o’clock Thursday, by Reverend Wm. D. Craig, Pastor of the Methodist Church, assisted by Reverend E.O. Whitwell, pastor of the Presbyterian Church. Mr. Bass a retired farmer and merchant was born May 24, 1850 in Murphreesboro, Tennessee. He came to Grayson County 45 years ago settling at Gordonville. Three years later he moved to Whitesboro where he has lived since, occupying the house where he died for 29 years. He married Miss Ura Dinna Anderson October 11, 1875. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge, serving as treasurer for more than 35 years. He was also a member of the I.O.O.F. and W.O.W. lodges of which he is a chosen member. He is also a member of the Methodist Church. Mr. Bass was preceded in death by two sons. He is survived by his wife; six sons, Frank, Bradley, Doc, Will, Walton and John; Grand children, Ray Bass, Larwni, Texas; Lotian Bass, Dallas; Francis Bass, Austin, Texas; Julia Bess Bass, Fort Worth. He received his early education at Alfred and Woodhull academy, remaining about a year at each place. With such preparation and qualification for the duties of public life, on the 1st of March 1876 he was united in marriage with Miss Hortense Manning, with whom he has lived happily till death did them part. His first business venture was at Greenwood, where he remained eight years and then removed to Whitesville, where he had prosecuted business continuously and successfully for thirteen years, until death released him on the morning of March 4th, 1897, in his 44th year. Mr. Bassett has not only established a good business reputation during all these years, but has also endeared himself to this community by his genial spirit and manly virtues. He made profession of religion at Greenwood during the pastorate of Rev. C.R. Buck, but did not connect himself with any church, but during his residence here, he has not only contributed freely but liberally for church and benevolent purposes and during my pastorate, has at least once every Sabbath, been an observant and interested attendant at the public worship of God. Mr. Bassett was a good citizen, public spirited and patriotic and an intelligent and deeply interested observer of the tendency of public events that would naturally make or mar the tranquility and prosperity of the nation. He invariably supported all measures calculated to promote the common good of the community, such as schools, churches, temperance, peace and order. He was a good and kind neighbor, a firm friend, a devoted husband, and indulgent parent, a genial companion and at all times just, liberal and kind. At his funeral the representatives of varied benevolent orders of which he was a member, by their presence and emblems of sorrow gave significant expression to the fact that he was a brother beloved and the unusual attendance of the first citizens at his last obsequies clearly indicated the estimation in which he was held by the community. Manning & Sons Beef Company for more than 35 years, passed away peacefully Monday, October 8, 2007. He was 91. Jim was born January 21, 1916 in Paris, Missouri and grew up there. He came to California in 1938 to find work and married his high school sweetheart, Sarah Helen Gaines, in 1940. In 1942 they moved to Whittier, joined the First Christian Church of Whittier and raised their three children. He retired from E. B. Manning & Sons in 1983. A devoted husband, father, grandfather, and great grandfather, Jim was an active member of the Whittier Kiwanis for over fifty years and served in numerous positions including local chapter President. Most notable, however, Jim was a "True Blue" Dodger fan and faithfully attended Dodger games since 1958. He was chosen Dodger Fan of the Year in 1996 and threw out the ceremonial first pitch in his custom Dodger Uniform on Fan Appreciation Night. Jim was preceded in death by his wife Helen on January 24, 2003. He is survived by his son, Robert Langdon and daughter-in- law Janell Bassett of Orange, California; daughter and son-in-law Sally and Bill Fletcher of Little River, California; and daughter and son-in-law Mary Elizabeth and John Costas of Fort Worth, Texas. He also leaves grandchildren Jake, Sally, and Kent Bassett; Patrick Shearer; John, Michael, and Robert Costas; Sarah Costas-Lo; and great granddaughter Sarah Beth Lo. | 50991 | Wickenburg Sun, Wickenburg, Arizona, Friday, May 11, 1951 A Pioneer Called Mrs. Ada Bass Laid To Rest At Grand Canyon After Finale Rites Held Here Wickenburg residents paid tribute Monday to Mrs. Ada L. Bass, 83-year old mother of William G. Bass, with services conducted at 5 p.m. in the Wickenburg Chapel by Dr. Samuel S. Poling, Presbyterian minister. Mrs. Bass, who had lived in Arizona for 61 years and in Wickenburg for 18 years, died at her home in Phoenix Saturday. On Tuesday the body was removed to Grand Canyon where graveside services were conducted at 2 o'clock by Dr. Poling and burial was beside the grave of her daughter, Edith. EARLY SETTLER Mrs. Bass, who was born in Worchester, N. Y., came to Arizona in 1890. She was married to the late W. W. Bass in 1894. The Bass family moved to Wickenburg in 1923, purchased property on the Constellation Road and Highways 60-70 and operated several businesses here. Mr. Bass died in 1933 in Wickenburg. Mrs. Bass continued to live here until 1941 when she moved to Phoenix. THREE CHILDREN SURVIVE In addition to the son, W. G. Bass, who operates the La Siesta Motel here, Mrs. Bass is survived by two daughters: Mrs. F. D. Patterson and Mrs. Mable Ott, both of Phoenix, all of whom attended the services here and in Grand Canyon.
