| 51051 | Waverly New York Advocate Human Petrification How human bodies or other bodies, become petrified has long been a mystery. The fact, however, is abundantly established. The following quite remarkable case is furnished us by John A. Nichols, Esq. of Spencer: Mary Bassett, wife of Jeremiah Bassett, died Nov. 8, 1850; was buried on the farm of her husband about two miles north of the village of Spencer in this county. At the time of her death she was 81 years old, and rather fleshy ? the disease being dropsy. Her remains were taken up by Phineas Brazen, in May, 1873, and removed to the cemetery in the village of Spencer. The body was found to be in a petrified state, except the eyes, which were gone. The body was quite plump, the chest full size, color yellowish, which, no doubt, was caused by the earth in which the body lay. The hair was viable and natural. By tapping on the body it appeared to be a hard substance. It was very heavy, quite as much so as when a live, and ropes had to be got under it to lift it out of the grave; and in raising it the neck broke off and let the head drop. The coffin was nearly all gone, and left the body lying in the earth. There were three other members of the family buried in the same grave yard, and within a few feet of this woman, all of whom died since the mother; and their bodies were all entirely decayed, nothing but the bones remaining. | Hugg, Mary (I01033)

He attended Waxahachie schools and graduated from Poly Tech High School in Fort Worht, where he was named All-City, All-State and All-American. He received a football scholarship to the University of Houston and played tight end with the Cincinnati Bengals football team. Mrs. Heath was born December 8, 1946 in Crisp County, Georgia to Cyrus L. Bass and Thelma Johnson Herrington. She was a member of Shiloh Baptist Church but had been attending Pleasant Hill Baptist Church for several years. Mrs. Heath was retired from the Bank of Ellaville after 37 years and Winn-Dixie for over 25 years. She had a passion for decorating and loved to crochet and sew. Mrs. Heath also loved watching Hallmark Christmas Movies. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a daughter, Dawn Heath Pountious. | 51056 | Wayne County Outlook Kentucky Tuesday, August 8, 2017 Robert Eugene Bass Robert Eugene Bass, age 60, of Glasgow died Saturday, August 5, 2017 in Monroe County after a sudden illness. He was born in Somerset, Kentucky, and was a former resident of Monticello. He was a self-employed carpenter. Survivors include his mother Betty Buster Bass of Glasgow; one son Brian Bass (Kelly) of Glasgow; one daughter April Johnson of Glasgow; three grandchildren Caleb Johnson, Lauren and Brayden Bass; his girlfriend Evette Wilson of Tompkinsville; two brothers Allen Bass (Marlene) of Monticello and Jeff Bass (Sonya) of Glasgow.; a nephew Devin Bass also survives. He was preceded in death by his father Ralph Lee Bass in 2012. Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, August 8, 2017 in the funeral home chapel in Glasgow. | 51057 | Wayne County Outlook, Monticella, Kentucky, 8 Nov 1945 Charles R. Bass Charles R. Bass, 61, of Ridgeway, died at 4:15 yesterday afternoon of a heart attack at his home. He was born in Wayne County, Ky., February 9, 1884 and had been a resident of Hardin County for the past four years. He was a railroad foremen. He was a member of the Fidelity Lodge No. 558 F. and A. M. of Chattanooga, Tennessee and of Scioto Chapter 115 of Royal Arch Masons of Kenton. He married Miss Pearl Frazer on October 27, 1920 in Chattanooga. He is survived by the wife and four sons by a previous marriage, Mark of High Point, N. C ; Thomas of Marion, Ohio; Floyd of Fayetteville, N. C. ; and Charles who is serving with the U. S. Army in the Pacific area. One niece, Mrs. Martha Patterson, of Cleveland, three brothers William of Texas, James of Kentucky, Thomas of Tennessee survive, with six grandchildren. Funeral services will be conducted Monday from the late home by the Sherman funeral home at Ridgeway. Rev. A. E. Oliver of New Hampshire assisted by Rev. Ballinger of Ridgeway will officiate. After 64 years of marriage, she was preceded in death by her husband, James Bassett Nitschke and her parents, Jane McCrosky Tyler and Roger Barton Tyler as well as two sisters, three brothers, and son-in-law, Tom Mraz. Kathleen is survived by three daughters, Mary Kay Mraz, Beth Stevener and husband, Mike, and Lucy Biggs and husband, Karl. Kathleen graduated from Austin High School in 1945 and then went on to attend the University of Texas where she graduated with a Bachelor of Music Degree in 1950. She married her husband, Jim on November 20, 1948. She taught at Austin Public Schools for a short time and was a member of Kappa Alpha Theta, Wednesday Morning Music Club, Symphony League, Junior League of Austin, and Settlement Club. Kathleen also attended St. David's Episcopal Church. Most who knew her called her Kathleen, but those closest to her knew her as "Aunt Katty" or "Gram." She will be missed dearly by all. | 51065 | Week of 18 Jan 2007, The Enterprise Record, Davie County, North Carolina Everett William Tutterow Mr. Everett William Tutterow, 94, of Rainbow Road, Advance, died Saturday, Jan. 13, 2007, at Davie County Hospital. Mr. Tutterow was born Nov. 29, 1912, in Davie County to the late Thomas Wilson and Daisy Mae Bassett Tutterow. As a young man he traveled from this home in the Center community of Davie north for work. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II and survived being a prisoner of war in Germany. He was awarded the Silver Star and Purple Heart. Mr. Tutterow returned home to New Bedford, Mass., eventually opening Tutterow's Televison and Stereo at the thime every American wanted a TV in their home. He was a successful business man for more than 30 years before retiring and returning to Davie, where he bought a small farm and raised beef cattle for many years. He was a proud tender of the land and enjoyed the years he farmed. His nephews, J. Larry Tutterow continues to care for the farm, working hard to meet his uncle's expectations. His last years was highlighted by the birth of great-great niece Emily Reece Tutterow, who was born one day before his 93rd birthday. He was able to remain at home thanks to the support of family and friends. He enjoyed many good meals provided by his neighbors, Betty Grissom, Jolene McKenzie, and niece, Frances Tutterow. He enjoyed reading history and science books and even an occasional encyclopedia. Everett was an avid baseball and football fan. He appreciated the support of his family and special neighbors. He was also preceded in death by his wife, Ursula Callahan Tutterow, in 1984; 3 sisters, Ora Mae Tutterow Boyd, Floella Tutterow Foster, Margaret Tutterow Fox; 4 brothers, Cleo Compton Tutterow, Ray Edward Tutterow, Thomas Wilson Tutterwo Jr., James Bassett Tutterow, and a nephew. Survivors include several nieces and nephews and great nieces and nephews. A graveside service was conducted at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 16 at Center United Methodist Church Cemetery in Mocksville, with Dr. David Gilbreath officiating. Davie County Heritage, North Carolina, 1997 1063 Everette Tutterow I was born on November 29, 1912, and raised in the Center community. my parents were Thomas Wilson Tutterow, Sr. and Daisy Mae Bassett. Our family was a self-reliant one. We made our living by farming. My dad was a jack-of-all trades. He could shoe horses and build things. He owned 130 acres of land i three different tracts. One tract of 60 acres extended to the back of Powell Road, what we called Callahan Mountain. And he had two more tracts of 40 acres and 30 acres lying in a southwest direction. My grandparents were George and Molly Watts Tutterow. They lived in a log house nearby. Grandpa Tutterow was a blacksmith. His work was very good. There wasn't anything he couldn't fix. Grandma Tutterow lived to be 94 years old. Every year she would make the best pear preserved in the world. Her family was from Taylorsville. There were eight children in my family. We went to a one room school in Center. They finally added one addition onto the big room. It only had school through the seventh grade. My dad couldn't spare any of us to go on to the high school in Mocksville. My formal education ended there in that one room schoolhouse. We always attended Sunday school at Center Methodist although our mother Daisy belonged to the Holiness Church. She was real faithful about church-going. The preachers back then traveled a circuit so that you only heard the minister delivering a sermon one or two times a month. My dad wasn't terribly religious although he would go to revival meetings sometimes. All of us kids worked hard around the farm. I remember picking cottong when I was just a little fellow. Ours was what you might say, "a two-man outfit". It took at least two to operate everyting. In 1935 I moved to New Bedford, MA, to work. When I left to go up North, my brother Tom took over. Tom was hardly abel to see over the tractor - when he began running the farm. He did a good job of it. In 1942 Tom was drafted. He drove heavy machinery. He was stationed first in North Africa and then Italy. He saw some heavy fighting. I was drafted in 1943. I was first sent to England at Normandy. I then went to Germany. My platoon of 40 men deserted leaving only four of us. We had to surrender when we were attacked. We didn't have enough men to hold our position. We all were captured and taken to a German POW camp. There were about 55 of us held in a big building. Our biggest problem was getting enough to eat. Red Cross would send in food drops. When the Russians came, our guards deserted! One of the guys got a map somehow. I remember using sign language and asking a German civilian for his bicycle. We walked or biked 150 miles out of the camp located in present-day Poland. | 51066 | Weekly Mail, April 16, 1887 Death of Mr. Alexander Bassett, Llandaff Much surprise was caused on Saturday at the office of Messrs. Bassett, Bassett, and Lee, civil and mining engineers, Church-street, Cardiff, on receipt of a telegram announcing the death of Mr. Alexander Bassett, of Baynton House, Llandaff, the senior partner of the firm, which even took place at Mauradean Park, Bournemouth, on Friday night. Deceased had for a long been suffering from bronchial affections, and had resided at Bournemouth for over twelve months, but still continued to direct the professional engagements of the firm, and on Saturday morning a post-card was received from him at the Cardiff office giving some instructions to be carried out. Mrs. Bassett and other members of the family were with him, but no one seemed to anticipate that his end was no near. Mr. Bassett began his professional career at Cardiff by entering into partnership with Mr. E.S. Barker, civil and mining engineer, and who at that time was also county surveyor. On Mr. Barker?s death Mr. Bassett succeeded him and soon afterwards he held one of the most extensive professional pursuits as civil and mining engineer in the county, in which capacity he was connected with the largest mineral proprietors in Glamorganshire, Monmouthshire, and the Bristol district, and which positions he continued to hold up to the time of his death. He first suggested the advantages of a dock just outside Newport, and, with Mr. Abernethy, planned and carried out the Alexandra Doc, Mr. J.A.B. Williams, the present water engineer for the Cardiff Corporation, being the resident engineer and superintending the work as it proceeded. He was the engineer for the Cowbridge Railway Company, and planned and laid down that line of railway from Llantrisant to Cowbridge. He held the office of county surveyor for Glamorganshire for over 30 years, and when he resigned that appointment in 1885 his son, Mr. A. B. Bassett, was appointed his successor. Owing to failing health, he, in the same year, took into partnership his son, who had assisted him for fifteen years, and also Mr. Mark lee, who had been in his office for over 30 years, but he continued to direct the affairs of the firm to the last. Mr. Bassett was appointed a borough magistrate for Cardiff in 1868, but only occasionally occupied a seat on the bench at the police-court. In private life Mr. Bassett was almost beloved by all the residents of Llandaff, among whom he had lived for many years. He was an intimate friend of the late Bishop Ollivant, and the bishop often sought his advice. He was the first promoter of the coffee tavern movement at Cardiff on a large scale, as he projected the Cardiff Coffee Tavern Company in 1879, and acted as hon. treasurer to the company for a long time. He was also the treasurer and one of the most active promoters of the fund for the erection of St. Catherine?s Church, Canton. He was also widely known for his acts of private charity to the poor, and every year he invited the scholars of the Llandaff National School and the children of the Ely Industrial Schools to spend a day during the summer on his grounds, where every preparation was made for their comfort and amusement, and the announcement at Llandaff on Saturday of his death caused a general feeling of deep regret. Mr. Bassett leaves a wife, two sons, and a daughter. His eldest daughter, who some time since married the Rev. Mr. Ross, one of the minor canons of Llandaff Cathedral, died a few months ago. Alexander Bassett (source unknown) Obituary Alexander Bassett, eldest son of the Reverend Alexander Bassett, was born at Great Cheverell in the County of Wilts, on the 28th of April, 1824. He was educated at Marlborough College, and on leaving school was articled to Mr. Thomas Tilbrook, of Horningsham near Warminster, a surveyor and land agent, at that time largely employed in making parish surveys uder the Tithe Commutation Act. He remained in Mr. Tillbrook?s office for two years, and was afterwards engaged on parliamentary surveys for several projected railways under Mr. Joseph Locke, M.P., Past President Inst. C.E. He subsequently spent two years in the office of a firm of land agents and railway valuers. In the spring of 1846, young Bassett was introduced to Mr. W.M. Peniston, M. Inst. C.E., the Resident Engineer, under Mr. Brunel of the Wilts and Somerset Railway. He entered Mr. Peniston?s office, and in a few months was appointed assistant engineer on a division of that railway 8 miles in length, including two tunnels, and he retained that appointment until the works were partially stopped. In 1849 he undertook the management of works in connection with the opening of a new colliery near Pontypridd, in Glamorganshire, including the sinking of the pits, and the erection of the machinery; this work occupied him until the autumn of 1850, when he removed to Cardiff, and commenced business as a civil and mining engineer. In August 1852 he entered into partnership with the late Mr. E.S. Barber, M. Inst. C.E., who, at that time, had a considerable practice as a civil and mining engineer in the counties of Monmouthshire, Glamorganshire and Breconshire. A year later his partner, Mr. Barber, left England, having been appointed by the Eastern Archipelago Company to report on, and direct the operations on, their mineral property in the Island of Borneo, the entire management of the business devolved upon Mr. Bassett. In 1854 the news reached England of Mr. Barber?s death at Borneo, thus leaving Mr. Bassett the sole surviving partner. So well and ably had he conducted the many and intricate duties connected with the several large mineral and other properties under his charge, that in every case the posts held by his partner were conferred on him. He was also appointed County Surveyor for Glamorganshire. His practice now rapidly increased, and extended into the counties of Somersetshire and Gloucestershire, where he acted for several larger owners of property. In 1858 and 1859 he acted as Engineer to the Sirhowy Railway Company, and prepared the parliamentary plans for that line (15 miles in length). During the next ten years he was busily engaged in each session of parliament in various schemes for railways, waterworks, &c, either by the promoters or on behalf of the opposition. He was the Engineer of the Cowbridge Railway and of the Pontypridd Waterworks, also joint engineer for the Swansea Vale Railway. He was also frequently engaged in railway and other arbitration cases. In the spring of 1864 Mr. Bassett?s active mind was directed to the great want of better dock accommodation at Newport (Monmouthshire), and of facilities for the development of the enormous mineral wealth of the district; and, as engineer to Lord Tredegar, a large owner of mineral property, he proposed a scheme for new docks on the west side of the River Usk, nearer the mouth of the river than the old docks, and on his lordship?s property. His ideas were very favourably entertained; and, at his recommendation, Mr. james Abernethy, Past-President Inst. C.E., was called on to report on the project, with the results that parliamentary plans were deposited that year; the Act was obtained after considerable opposition, and the Alexandra (Newport) dock and railways were constructed and opened in 1875, Mr. Bassett being the Acting Engineer and Mr. Abernethy, the Engineer-in-Chief. These works have proved very successful, and their opening marked a new era in the commercial prosperity and history of Newport. Mr. Bassett was elected a Member of this Institution on the 6th of March, 1860. He was a member also of the North of England Institute of Mining Engineers, and of the South Wales Institute of Engineers, of the establishment of which he was an active promoter. He was elected a member of its first council, and later on occupied the presidential chair. The utilization of small coal, long considered of little or no value, and for which scarcely any sale could be found, was a question that Mr. Bassett considered of material importance and one that deserved much more attention than it received. He spent much time and money in carrying out exhaustive experiments in the manufacture of ?Patent Fuel? made from small coal by several processes, and in its trials in the furnaces of locomotive and stationary engines. He was appointed a borough magistrate for Cardiff in 1868. He took an active interest in several charitable organizations to which he devoted much of his time and means. His kindly disposition and love of children were perhaps at no time more apparent than on the occasions of the annual treat he gave to the children of the Industrial Schools, when they were entertained in the grounds of his residence at Llandaff; on those occasions he entered thoroughly into their amusements and games. In character he was frank and truthful, highly honourable, and just in all his dealings, a man in whom his many clients and friends had ? and rightly had ? the honoured course, resolved to do his duty to God and man. Failing health induced Mr. Bassett to remove to Torquay for the winter of 1878, the subsequent winters of 1880 and 1881 were spent at Mentone. She was born on April 15, 1927 to Edna Hawkins (Pittman) and Asa Gilbert Bass in Goldsboro, North Carolina. Dorothea was a telephone operator before marrying Milo Gale York on June 13, 1952 in Goldsboro, North Carolina. They began building a life together in Goldsboro before moving to Johnson, Kansas where they would live on the family farm and raise their five children. In 1979 she and Milo moved to Colorado where they purchased and operated multiple ranches before retiring in Coaldale, Colorado. A desire to be closer to family caused Dorothea to move several times after Milo passed in 1996. She settled in Sublette in 1999 and lived in Haskell County until her passing. Dorothea found joy in china painting, sewing, charity work and was devoted to her family and her faith in God. She enjoyed her travels all over the globe and had many unique experiences. She is survived by her daughters, Dorothy Card of Iowa, Jan Riddick of Lamar, CO, and Shirley Appleton of Topeka, KS; sons, Douglas York and wife Cynthia of Colorado Springs, CO, and Peter York and wife Roberta of Sublette, KS; and her beloved fifteen grandchildren, and numerous great-grandchildren. She is preceded death by her husband, Milo York; parents, Asa and Edna Bass; two grandsons; sisters, Martha Jane Williamson, and Rachel Bass; brothers, Gilbert, James and Samuel Bass. Herbie chose to go into hospice rather than have heart surgery. His choice was made with an absolutely clear head and with his own special sense of humor. Herbie, whose infinite open-heartedness deeply touched everyone he knew, was undone by his own physical heart ? an irony he certainly appreciated. All who knew him were graced by his heart?s great gifts, his generosity, and his humor. Moreover, as Herbie aged he was the ultimate exemplar of gaining wisdom and equanimity with age. Herbie is survived by his younger brother, Irvin (his spouse JoAnn); his three children: Bryna, Michal, and David (their spouses Ted, Gregory, and Nancy); his three grandchildren: Simone (her spouse Joe), Zoe, and Carlin; and his two great-grandchildren: Mia and Miles. The long arc of Herbie?s life began on his beloved Windham Avenue in Cincinnati, the oldest son of Louis and Anna Bass, Russian-Jewish immigrants. While still a teen-ager he fought in WW II as a medic and often related how he?d rush to his fallen comrades with a morphine syrette to ease their pain. It is fitting then, that Herbie?s hospice care included morphine to ease his increasing chest pain. After marrying the late Helen Rita Harris of Newport Kentucky, Herbie became a successful attorney working not only for the Federal government and in private practice, but as the ?go-to attorney? for whatever legal issues or imbroglios his family or friends needed help with. His wide breadth of knowledge and un-ending compassion could always be counted on. In addition to his search for spiritual truth, Herbie?s more earthly pursuits and limitless curiosity led him to embrace the iPhone, Facebook, and texting ? allowing him to get much ?nachas? from his children?s, grandchildren?s and great-grandchildren?s accomplishments. Herbie?s life ended in Cincinnati where he was able to spend his last few days with his three children, close family, and many, many friends. The latter is underscored by a remark once made by his-then very young grandchild, Carlin, who asked ? when visiting Herbie- ?How come everyone in Cincinnati knows Grandpa?? We all loved you, Herbie, and we thank you for making our lives richer. A daughter of the late James and Nellie Lund Smithson, Mildred was born in Thurnscoe, England, on May 31, 1937. A homemaker, she was a Methodist by faith and was involved in the community as a Brownie Scout leader. Preceding her in death were her husband, Norman Bassett; one son, David Bassett; a grandson, Jessie Bassett; and her daughter-in-law, Alisa Bassett. Survivors include one son, Allen Bassett, and his wife, Sanda, of Brooksville, Florida; two daughters, Sally Greathouse and her husband, Bill, of New Cumberland, West Virginia, and Donna Terazza and her husband, Dan, of Baltimore, Maryland; and 10 grandchildren, Joe (Candi) Greathouse, Cory Greathouse, Cherika (Tristan) Vaughn, Christa (Nathan) Nash, Brandi (Bryan) King, Justin (Hayley) Bassett, Brandi Jo Schroeder, Nicky (Jimmy) Rice, and Ryan and Jeffery Knight. Here was a young man, a perfect specimen of Australian manhood, apparently in the best of health, moving about amongst his friends the previous day and night, and yet in a moment he was cut off from all those whom he held so dear, and from his hosts of friends in the town and district. It is just another case which shows how uncertain are our lives. The weak and sickly may linger on for years, whilst the apparently strong and healthy are called away at a minute's notice. The deceased was about as usual during Tuesday, and in the evening, with Rev. Keith Norman and Mr. Maurice Pearce, paid a visit to an old fellow-in-arms, Mr. D. H. Barton, returning home before midnight in the very best of spirits. He awoke next morning as usual, and before breakfast went to the garage to get his car out, but shortly afterwards, as he had not come in to breakfast, he was found in a collapsed condition, and though Dr. Black was in attendance in the space of a few moments, he was beyond all human aid. It was a tragic ending to a young life so full of promise, and to a man who appeared to have such a long life in front of him. It was no wonder, then, that his friends could not realize that his end had come so suddenly. However, he is but another victim of the late war, for, while doing his duty as a soldier in defense of the world, he was wounded and also became a victim of malaria, which was so prevalent in Palestine during his long term at the front. The bad time which our soldiers went through had left their mark on him, though he did not show it, and outwardly he appeared a big strong man. The late Mr. Bassett was the only son of Mrs. and the late Mr. John Thomas Prichard Bassett and was a native of Bathurst. He attended the Wellington Public School from there going to the Sydney Church of England Grammar School. After leaving school he decided to take up law, thus following in the footsteps of his father, whose office he entered, and he was also for several years in the office of the well-known firm of solicitors, Messrs Beckett and Holdshin, of Sydney. When the Mother Country called for assistance he was amongst the first to offer his services, and though he was turned down on 18 occasions, owing to his eyesight, he was eventually passed, and went away with the fifth Light Horse and saw a great deal of fighting in Palestine. He was wounded on a couple of occasions, and was awarded the Military Medal for bravery on the battlefield, although he was very modest in regard to his work on the other side. When he came back he again took up his studies and when he passed his final examination he was, in 1923, admitted, as a solicitor, and entered into partnership with his late father under the name of J. T. P. Bassett and Son, and after the death of his father, he continued the practice under the same name. In his early days he was keen on swimming, and was a prominent member of the first Wellington Swimming Club formed in this town. He was also a fine Rugby Union player, and in the days of the old Wellington team, his great weight and ability as a scrummager was a feature of the game. He was also a keen tennis enthusiast, and also was, at the time of his death, President of the Wellington Public Tennis Club. He was a keen follower of racing, and was a member of the Wellington Picnic and Turf Clubs. He took a keen interest in the welfare of the town in which he was born, and was for some years a prominent member of the School of Arts. He was a dutiful son, and deeply attached to his mother, who, we are sorry to state, is not in good health, and his death will be a great blow to her, as well as to his two surviving sisters, Mrs. H. M. Lowe, of ?Yooroga? Obley, and Mrs. Norman Rutherford, of Bathampton, Bathurst. The body was encased in a polished silky oak casket, and, after a short service at the home, which was conducted by the Rev. Keith Norman, the funeral cortege left shortly after 9 a.m. this morning for the cemetery, where the remains were laid to rest in the family enclosure in the Church of England portion, the funeral service again being conducted by Rev. Keith Norman. There was a big attendance of returned men, and the ?Last Post? was sounded by Mr. J. Whitehouse. The funeral was a very large and representative one, which was a token of the esteem in which the deceased was held by all classes of the community. Virginia resided at Manor Hills Assisted Living Facility in Wellsville, NY for the past three years. Previously, she made her home on West University Street in Alfred, NY for eighty-three years, having lived on both sides of the same street from her teenage years into her late nineties. Born on March 14, 1917 in Shongo, NY to Archie and Fannie Clark Foster, Virginia was one of eight children. On April 4, 1946, she married Leon Bassett who predeceased her in 1973. Virginia met her husband while working as a telephone operator in her early career. She was later employed by Alfred University College of Ceramics and by Olive Watson, founder of Honey Pot Candy in Alfred. Virginia purchased the business and moved the operation to 41 West University Street in Alfred in 1977. She created hand-dipped confections with the aid of her sister, Francelia McGraw. Honey Pot Chocolates remains a thriving business under the direction of Connie McGraw, Virginia's niece. Virginia was very community minded and enjoyed fellowship at the Seventh Day Baptist Church in Alfred. She was a loyal member of the Republican Party in Allegany County. Both local and national causes benefited from Virginia's generous contributions of time and funds. Virginia was an avid reader, a fan of local history, and baked the only truly great molasses cookies that ever existed. Her parents, her siblings, William Foster, Dorotha Harris, Archie Edward Foster, Fannie McGill, Francelia McGraw, Loie Odell, Eugene Foster, their spouses, and a nephew, Dale Foster, all predeceased her. Virginia is survived by twelve nieces and nephews, several great-nieces and great-nephews and their offspring. Several cousins also survive. Strong-willed and incredibly resilient, Virginia will be missed for her generosity, sharp wit and endless resolve. A funeral service will be held on Saturday, September 29, 2018 at 1 p.m. at the Seventh Day Baptist Church on Church St. in Alfred, NY. Rev. Christian Mattison will officiate. | 51086 | Wendell Bass Obituary (Picture included) Wendell M. Bass, 701 North Sycamore, died Thursday, September 11, of cancer after an illness of four months. He was 50 years old. Mr. Bass was a native of Iola, born here June 3, 1925, the son of the late Mr. and Mrs. John S. Bass. He graduated from Iola High School in 1943 and joined the Navy in which he served throughout World War II. He and Phyllis Garner were married February 26, 1950, in Iola. Mr. Bass was employed by the Lehigh Portland Cement Company after he was discharged from the Navy and worked there until the plant closed. He then was employed by the Cities Services Company. He was active in Little League baseball, serving as an umpire and manager of teams throughout many years. His interest in school athletics was keen, as all three of his sons played football in high school. He was a member of the Iola Bowling Association and served on the board of USD 257, a position he held at the time of his death. Mr. Bass was a member of Ward Chapel, A.M.E. Church and the Golden Square Masonic Lodge No. 71 of Iola. Mrs. Bass survives, as do three sons, Wendell Jr. of Kansas City, Elliott of Iola, and Ralph, who is attending Annapolis. The funeral will be at 2 p.m. Monday, September 15, at Ward Chapel, A.M.E. Church with the Rev. R. L. Baynham and Rev. Oorenzo Finnell officiating. Interment will be at Highland Cemetery. A memorial service will be held in his hometown of Milledgeville on Sunday, August 24, 2008, at 3 p.m. in Memory Hill Cemetery. Formerly of Milledgeville, Mr. Bass graduated from Georgia Military College, UGA, and received his master's from Northwestern University. Having a life long interest in planes, he qualified for his pilot's license at age 15. He served as a pilot in the U.S. Army Aviation Forces during the Korean War. During his years at Northwestern he was a flight instructor at Palwaukee airport. A committed business leader, Mr. Bass held several positions at Chicago Title and Trust Co. including treasurer, comptroller and executive vice-president. He headed the Trust Division from 1967-1986. He began Retirement Planning of America, and for many years, served on the board of directors of Venture Advisors and the Davis Funds. Outside of the financial world, he served on many boards of directors, including Institute for Christian Living, Institute for Living, Samaritan Center and was a member of the Central Committee of Northwestern University Settlement Association. Having served many terms as president of the Illinois Society for the Prevention of Blindness, he worked to put the organization on solid financial footing, to establish legislation to ensure low vision testing for all children, to provide funding for eye glasses and low vision aids for children in need, and to create an eye tissue donation bank. Not only was he a respected and dedicated employee for Hyson Co. until his retirement in 2010, he served as a committed union steward for the workers as well. Edward enjoyed spending time with his family and attending outing events. In his spare time, he loved to root on his favorite sport teams: The Atlanta Falcons, The Atlanta Braves and the Atlanta Hawks.
